92-2810 - Scott Monument
On our second day in Edinburgh, our friends gave us a tour round the older parts of Edinburgh and we stopped for a coffee in Princes Street Gardens, sitting on the grass with this view of the Scott Monument (I’ve delayed posting this because I wanted to do some more work on the sketch). The monument is to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott (famous for historical novels like Ivanhoe and Rob Roy).…

The lady of the lake : with illustrations.
By Sir Walter Scott
The Lady of the Lake is a poem by Sir Walter Scott, set in Scotland and first published in 1810. It is comprised of six cantos, which each tell the events of a day.
The poem tells a story of skirmishes between the Lowlanders--led by Scottish King James V--and Highland clans, as well as the contest between three men, including the disguised King James, to win the love of the daughter of a Highland chief.
While many of the main characters are historical figures, the events of the poem are otherwise fictionalized. The poem also has no connection to the Arthurian legend of the Lady of the Lake.
Bound in red plaid fabric, with lining papers illustrated in pale green floral pattern, and pages edged in gold; tiny brown label stamped in gold inside back cover: "Royal-Stewart." Brown leather spine label stamped in gold "Scott's Lady of the Lake." --Catalog

^ Here is a Scottish Highlander calf (native from that area, bred to be sturdy and intelligent to survive in the cold and rocky region) because they are very cute.

I've been fascinated by old books for some time and I was happy to find this one in a thrift store - an 1883 edition of The Lady of the Lake, a narrative/romantic poem by Sir Walter Scott (originally published in 1810). I did a little light research on the book's background and found that it inspired a number of things, below are a few of significance: - The official anthem of The U.S Presidency was inspired by the lines: "Hail to the Chief who in triumph advances! Honored and blessed be the ever-green Pine!" - The custom of cross burning was adapted by the KKK from what was described by Sir Walter Scott in The Lady of the Lake, as well as in his other poems and novels - in Scotland the fiery cross, known as the Crann Tara, was used as a declaration of war. - As to avoid slave hunters, Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey changed his name to Frederick Douglass under the advice of Nathan Johnson - an abolitionist that Douglass met in New Bedford, Massachusetts. "I gave Mr. Johnson the privilege of choosing me a name, but told him he must not take from me the name of 'Frederick.' I must hold on to that, to preserve a sense of my identity." Johnson chose "Douglass", which was based on a character (a banished nobleman) of the same name in The Lady of the Lake. #books #oldbooks #literature #writing #novels #authors #sirwalterscott #Frederickdouglass #abolitionist #art #ladyofthelake #theladyofthelake #thriftstore
