Growing up at Hogwarts had been a lot of fun. Her world had been formed by some great friends in the Gryffindor House. Mary and Lily had been the people she would put all her trust in. Sirius had been her best friend for years. James, Remus and Peter had been there for her as well. Quidditch had been the must fun as well but it was all in the past.

Over the past few years since the war, Marlene had been pulling away from them. They were all part of the Order. They were all reminders of the thing that made her lose one of her brothers. The one she had been closest in in age but also in friendship. And she could not keep that reminder in her life.

So it had been a while since Marlene had last seen Sirius. Bumping into him in Diagon Alley was something she had not expected her bingo card of the day to contain. "Sirius. Hi. I didn't see you there, even though you are ten feet tall."

as he sat in a small room tucked purposefully in the very back corners of the ministry, regulus found he was very aware of his breathing. a deep breath in. a deep breath out. to regulus, no time had passed at all since that awful moment. his most recent memories were of drowning - when breathing had meant everything. it felt like just an hour ago that he’d been pulled under. the funny thing about drowning is you can’t help but hold your breath. it’s involuntary - you’re acutely aware of the situation you’re in, and your body holds in the breath until it feels like your head is about to explode. in trying desperately to survive, you make dying a hundred times worse. the relief comes only when you give in. that final deep breath to ease the pain - to end it all.

a deep breath in. a deep breath out.

he felt small in this room. and maybe he’d feel small in every room now. it felt like only an hour ago, after all, that regulus ( for the first time in fifteen years ) had accepted he was just a boy. a kid, faced with improbably adult responsibilities. the adults who had met him on the dais and brought him to this room at looked at him with a mixture of pity and confusion in their eyes. what did they know? what did anyone know?

perhaps this was purgatory. he’d learnt about this in muggle studies in his fifth year - of the various muggle religions, there was one that spoke of an in between place, a place you went after death that would be the deciding factor in your ultimate fate. were they truly right? where, then, would he go? the name beezlebub came to him like booming thunder. was there even a question? he would burn for the sins he had committed, he was sure of it. so why the interrogation? was there choice? could he plead his case? and say what? i made a fake locket, i deserve to see the heavens. no. he knew there was no penance for him - perhaps for anyone with the surname black. his thoughts flicked to his brother, laughing without a care in the world in the sprawling potter manor. maybe him. but maybe not.

for all the thoughts that raced through his head, he sat impossibly still, spine straight against the back of the chair and hands folded neatly in his lap. he had nothing if not his dignity, his manners, his politicians smile. perhaps this was the only thing keeping him from spiralling.

after what felt like an eternity, the door cracked silently open, and in walked… potter. the same messy hair, round glasses and haughty height he’d unfortunately come to recognise all too well. if he’d paid any closer attention, he might have noticed there was something off about him ( the brother thief ), perhaps an energy not as arrogant as he was used to, or the softer eyes that sat behind the lenses. but he never wished to look at james potter very closely as it was. instead, his spine stiffened impossibly straighter as he tilted his chin towards the man. was this his first punishment? to meet the man he thought perhaps he loathed the most. “potter,” he spoke, voice thin and curt. “might i help you with something?”

Out in the WILDERNESS, with SIRIUS BLACK

Regulus had missed flying. He had missed the speed, the acrobatics, and being able to just exist in the moment. When he played Quidditch, he didn't have to think about the world's woes, he wasn't limited by anything. It was just him and the crowds appreciating his flying (well, more Slytherin, the other Houses never seemed to route for them). He gave a great woop of enjoymeny as he looped through the sky, plumetting torwards the ground before gathering height, speeding towards his destination and Sirius.

They had agreed to a lone flight, giving them privacy from both sides but it was also something that had been greatly enjoyed in their childhood. Regulus didn't know what their relationship was meant to be now but he knew he wanted Sirius in his life. He knew he trusted him, perhaps more so than anyone else, something he wasn't sure Sirus entirely deserved but what else were big brothers for? They needed this. They needed a chance to be brothers.

Unable to resist, Regulus did do a tad more acrobatic maneouvers than required as he sped towards the agreed meeting place. Perhaps he should have stopped larking around as he came within eyesight of Sirius but he felt his brother must understand. "It's been too long since I've gone flying! We really should have more opportunities to get out and about!" Regulus beamed in greeting as he moved to hover next to his brother, eyes gleaming and cheeks rosey.

Quidditch Event, Early Afternoon 12 Grimmauld Place Regulus & @siriblk

Regulus stood in front of the mirror, admiring his own appearance. It had been quite some time since he's gone on a public outing and he wanted to ensure he looked presentable. Although he may not agree with a lot of the beliefs that had been shoved into his mind while growing up, he did think it was a good idea to look nice before leaving the house. Besides, he was going to be meeting up with Emmeline, and while he knew he didn't need to impress her, he did want to at least look presentable. After deciding he was satisfied with the wat he looked, Regulus stepped out of his bedroom and headed down the stairs.

Kreacher already had lunch prepared for him, and he sat down at the dining room table, ready to dig in. Hearing someone enter the room, Regulus turned his head to see who it was. His eyebrows raised at the sight of his brother. "That's what you're wearing?" He questioned, eyes fixed on the Quidditch jersey with the sleeves ripped off.

Marlene's nose scrunched up at the sight of the snitch in his hand. It was no fun to have it handed to her, she wanted to catch it herself. Although, admittedly, she did like that he was handing it over with no questions asked. Sometimes she felt as though she had Sirius wrapped around her finger, or perhaps more fittingly, on a short leash. No, the two of them simply got on well together, they've meshed ever since they first met each other. Surely they would both do absolutely anything for each other. Snatching the snitch from his hand, Marlene sighed slightly. "You're lucky I wasn't a seeker, else I'd be genuinely mad about this. Try it with your brother next time." She teased, a playful grin on her lips.

Marlene groaned, dragging her feet slightly as she moved towards the tent set up for the Broomsticks. "I didn't do anything to her, promise." And that was the truth, "She said that I could have today off, she knows how much I love quidditch, but I feel guilty." The tent had a constant swarm of people around it, and she couldn't help but to feel bad for not being there to help. "I suppose I'll come with you, though. I think you'll have an easier time getting through the crowd with someone as cute as myself escorting you."

He had seen the snitch at the last second - and somehow managed to catch it. Good to know he hadn't drank enough to dull his reflexes, although Sirius would chalk this one up to luck, primarily. “Don't take all my fun away, now.” He teased her, winking as he held his hand up in front of her and offered the snitch. 

Sirius’ shoulders slumped dramatically as Marlene continued. “Oh, come on! What did you do to Ros now?” He whined, huffing slightly, but he took her mug regardless and started them off toward the pub. Of course he was going to do it - she wouldn’t have even had to ask, to be honest. But that didn’t mean he couldn’t give her a hard time while he was at it.

• when I started shipping it if I did: good question uhhh I think it was about a year ago?

• my thoughts: GODDDD im so insane about them, i just love how inevitable they feel most of all. like. esp in the context of canon (I don’t think abt them in aus much ngl), sirius going to azkaban when he was so young, coming out older outside but emotionally stunted, yk? still a kid who never really got to grow up, esp if you take into account the trauma of growing up in an abusive household, getting into a war so young…. which yeah, we’re all thinking abt harry rn. the parallels of these two are insane they drive me nuts. then ofc the found family trope hits so hard bc, they both need a family so bad, someone who understands them, but not someone who will treat them like they’re fragile yk? i will never not think about how everyone was treating harry like a kid, and sirius like a freak, in canon. sirius standing up to harry who deserved to have all the info to fight during a war that painted a fucking target on his back but everyone shutting sirius down UGH. I just think no one understands each other as well as sirius and harry. I love them platonically too so so much. but in a romantic context it’s so different and smmm fun bc sirius will do ANYTHING for harry, that’s his baby, like; that’s the kid he swore to protect, that’s his dead best friend/savior’s child, but that’s also his savior—post azkaban, and it’s also a person on their own (which btw, sassy harry fits SO well w sirius lmao), it’s not a replacement for james or lily. sirius will stop at nothing to give harry what he needs…. but also what he wants, and that’s where it gets SO juicy, bc harry wants him but Sirius has to fight his guilt, his fraying morals (which, it’s canon that sirius is a morally grey character so it’s so fun to play w that), and maybe even, the thought that he’s dangerous, bc I hc the blacks as having a very intense, almost violent type of love. and I could see sirius being scared of that, of loving harry too hard, or too wrong. but harry is just. so lost. so starved for love. and he loves sirius sm, sirius is his whole damn world and the only thing that makes sense, that makes him feel safe in this fucked up world that’s always been so cold to him, and he doesn’t enjoy seeing sirius fight himself, carry the guilt on his own, but he so desperately doesn’t want to be alone in this either, and SIRIUS WONT LET HIM feel alone in this bc harry already carries too much on his shoulders and ughfjffkdndkfnskxbm basically they need to fuck but it’s hard to get them there, but once they do, it’s better than an anything else, it’s HEALING.

• What makes me happy about them: I think mostly that they’re each other’s person. like. they just get each other. also just. the sheer joy and relief they have of being in each others presence.

• What makes me sad about them: THE TRAGEDY OF FORBIDDEN LOVE, OF THE WAR, OF THEIR TRAUMA UGHHH also the miscommunication trope sometimes, esp if there’s past prongsfoot that makes harry feel like a replacement for his dad, or their trauma getting in the way

• things done in fanfic that annoys me: I love them, next question

• things I look for in fanfic: mhm the tension +++, the moral debate of it all, and their banter omg I eat it up everyyyy timeeee harry is SUCH a brat but sirius is also a comedic king AND a hot one at that and he’s so good at shutting harry up even tho it truly is harry who has sirius wrapped around his finger. i also love when the power imbalance / the age gap is explored bc… like it feels like the elephant in the room otherwise lmao. and it can be so fun esp during sex!

• Who I'd be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: I can ship both of them with literally almost anyoneeeee, like I love these two characters so so much that. I love all ships w them? I think I just tend to gravitate wayyy less towards sirius/hermione bc I just… really don’t see it and in my head, even sirius is kinda scrunching up his nose at the thought xD but honestly, that’s literally just me!! cheering sirmione shippers on!! have fun!!!!

• My happily ever after for them: a canon divergent AU in which sirius DOESNT die and harry DOES end up living with him thank you very much, and MOLLY LEAVES SIRIUS TF ALONE (needed to get that off my chest lmfao)

when I started shipping it if I did : not that long ago i think ?? like six month-ish when i started shipping sirius with everyone like a whore . but like deathstar stuck around and i love it sm they r my toxic yaoi

my thoughts : um. i love them. theyre so mentally ill. they hate each other. they need each other. they hate that they need each other. barty thinks sirius is actually from heaven and will save him sirius is tired of being the one expected to save horrible people from their own hand. they manipulate the fuck out of each other. they bring up each other's trauma and hurt each other and then lick their wounds. dont be like them kids ❌❌

what makes me happy about them: not much. they aren't a very happy couple i fear ,, but um i like seeing barty cry and i like seeing sirius being mildly uncomfortable about how much he affects people but also being narcissistic enough to relish in it

what makes me sad about them: omg everything theyre so horrible to each other even when they love each other and are in their good periods theyre constantly hurting each other,, barty is the pinnacle of the "all of my devotion turns violent" quote so sirius will wake up to an IV in his arm because barty is barty and sirius will ask barty to stand in front of a gun for him because that is the normal amount of devotion a person should have for him

Marlene looked up to Sirius, eyes wider than she had intended. It had been a rough morning, and he was one of her comfort people. It was easy to be herself around him, even if she was sitting on the ground sobbing. Her hand came up to wipe away the tears streaming down her cheeks, and her head shook slightly.

"I'm just finishing up," Marlene replied softly, turning back to shove the garbage from her breakfast into her backpack, "A distraction might me nice though." Although she may feel comfortable with Sirius, she didn't want to invite him to sit down with her. He'd let her cry on his shoulder enough times in the past, it wasn't something she needed right this moment.

She stood up slowly, legs wobbling slightly as the blood rushed back down to that part of her body. Slinging her backpack over her shoulders, Marlene wiped at her cheeks again before looking to Sirius. "Were you headed home, or…?" She didn't really care where he was headed, she was just glad to have some company.

He had been on his way home, having stopped off at the Three Broomsticks to say hello to Rosmerta for a minute after purchasing some new dueling gloves at Stitches & Draughts. The place was his secret gold mine - everyone seemed to write it off for knick knacks and uselses trinkets, but they had some of his best stuff in there.

On his way back, a small movement drew his eye to the small graveyard - usually overlooked, although he had visited before. Sirius' steps faltered and his heart sank just a little bit; he would know that figure anywhere. Marlene. Without thinking much about it, he went to her, but one he got there, he wasn't quite sure what to do next. This wasn't his forte - he didn't know how to comfort people, not in the ways they really needed.

She spoke before he could make up his mind on what to do, and he shook his head. "I was about to ask you the same thing." He said softly, no trace of the usual sarcasm that might accompany the words.

Marlene sat cross-legged on the floor in her room in front of her mirror as she coated her eyes with black pencil liner. She smiled up to Mary as she entered her room with a bottle of alcohol, her free hand immediately reaching out for it to be handed to her. "Glitter is getting on you one way or another, might as well let me do it intentionally." She teased, poking her tongue out before opening the bottle of firewhiskey. Marlene laughed slightly, returning her gaze to the mirror, "But how are you going to get your first kiss if you don't show off what you got?" She knew that wasn't necessairly on Mary's agenda for the night, but it was still fun to tease her. "Don't worry, I'll kiss you before the night is over." She made eye contact with Mary through the mirror and winked at her before bursting into laughter, which was absolute perfect timing for Sirius to enter the room. @siriblk

No matter what she knew the three of them would have a good time and she would be able to relax. "I'm here," she gives a quick knock on the door before barging in. "Glitter will not be dumping the whole bottle on me," her eyes narrow at the blonde, a bright smile on her face, holding up the bottle of firewhiskey. "This should help when we are getting ready." She places her dress on the bed and drops her heels on the floor. "Remind me when we are out that I don't bend over." Her butt plops on the bed.

Oh Eve. You know my feelings about the way Tonks was handled in canon, so Remadora stans, please proceed with caution.

Reading fanwork centered on them. Specifically yours and @thecat-isblogging-blog work!

my thoughts:

Tonks was shafted in canon. A character with great introduction (she is funny, she is a bit nosy, she is impertinent with mad-Eye who everyone respects or is wary of! She has ties to the Black family and her mother has history with Sirius and Bellatrix that would make her ripe for exploration). She got reduced to a red herring in HBP ("oh whats up with Tonks? Why is she depressed?") and then love interest and mother in DH, who exists offscreen to propel Remus and Harry's relationship. I will also say that the hospital scene isn't great in what it intends to be - grand declaration of romance. (it says a lot of unhealthy and dysfunctional things that I think is great to explore for the relationship in fan work).

What makes me happy about them:

What makes me sad about them:

I am forever amused that most in sync we see them together in DH is when they jump off the fence together when the Minister of magic comes in for Harry's birthday. Tonks, my girl, the man is a walking red flag lol. They have problems, and its delicious and sad, but wonderful to explore.

things done in fanfic that annoys me:

I only read works that have been recommended, so my experience of this ship in fanwork has been stellar! You, Cat, Merlin and Celeste are pretty much the only authors I have read and it has been great.

things I look for in fanfic:

Writers who really excavate the potential of Tonks from what we see in canon, and a Remus characterisation that I agree with XD

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: 

For Tonks? Fleur, maybe. I think there is an interesting idea there about women with powers related to their appearance - Tonks with her ability to change, and Fleur with her ability to do a version of thrall. XD Remus needs therapy - but if I want to make him worse, I would pick Sirius. If I want a healthier relationship for him, I would pick James.

My happily ever after for them:

Co-parenting Teddy after an amicable break up after a whirlwind relationship.

who is the big spoon/little spoon:

Depends on Tonks' mood. If she wants to be big spoon, she will be.

what is their favorite non-sexual activity:

Watching Muggle movies together. Remus likes it because it gives him a connection to his mother. Tonks discovers it thanks to him, and she tries to find out if her father had favourite movies growing up.
