Introduction

Hi Rotomblr. Rotumblr...? Rotomtumblr? Hmm, what do you guys call it normally? Er well, hello Rotomblr, my name's Anza and I'm a Pokemon Caretaker in-training, assigned to take care of a Cherrim since, I was told we're kind of the same since we both get sleepy when it rains and we're fine when it's sunny.

I really like all types of Pokemon but my favorite's Alcremie. I have more favorites than that but that'll take forever to list off. Hmm, I guess I could name one more... Appletun is also my favorite.

OOC: So, I made this blog on an impulse like I'm wont to do, which I also really need to STOP doing but, here we are again. I kind of wanna try and do something with this to kind of help with regression? I don't know how much help it'll be but it's worth a shot. If it doesn't help with that well, it's still fun. Which means Anza might maybe be a kind of self-insert oc?

This blog is of course a Pokemon unreality blog so be wary of that, even though the main setting will probably be Sinnoh and MAYBE Blueberry Academy but I guess with my own little spin on it?

I'm not really sure what else to put here. So, welcome to my blog. Hope you enjoy the stay.

The character is a teenager but the mun is an adult. My ask box is always open and you can ask anything that pertains to her school or her Pokemon or just her in general.

canonically the strongest character in jackverse. protag of the second half of rse, starter is ralts. ran away from home to have his pokemon journey, was traveling buddies with brendan until he went off the deep end. teamed up with zinnia to awaken rayquaza and stop team aqua and magma from destroying the world.

doomed by the narrative. protag of dppt and pla, starter is piplup and cyndaquil respectively. was sent back to pla era because she was the only trainer in sinnoh strong enough to stop volo from destroying the universe. is her own grandma. got pulled into the distortion world at the end of dppt. bottles everything up, has difficulty standing up for herself. my poor little laika girl. arceus' favorite (bad thing).

excuse me she asked for no pickles. dawn's rival, starter is turtwig. very intense and commanding to make up for dawn's complete lack of a spine. also desperate for fatherly approval, but not nearly as mentally ill about it. protag of the post-game arc with looker, travels to the battle zone to get stronger and makes friends with all the stat trainers.

Got inspired by the Six Fanarts meme but instead of other people giving me characters to draw I just chose them myself.

These six are mostly Unova kids (Darcel is the only one who isn’t but he’s not mine so does that even count), and are three duos of Detectives and their Criminal Nemeses (who then become their love interests) who each embody a character archetype of the genre. Going column by column...

Amelia Mistral (Skyla & Elesa’s daughter) as: The Sleuth - Amelia is an amateur detective and reporter looking for the next big scoop. She often ends in over her head, but her pluck and wit lead her to find plenty of clever solutions nonetheless!

Cicely “Cici” Callahan (Cress & an OC Team Plasma Grunt named Brad’s daughter) as The Femme Fatale - Cici was raised by her father Brad after he left the team following the events of BW. Growing up in Castelia, it wasn’t long before she fell in with a bad crowd, as they say, and began turning to a life of petty-and then not so petty-crime. Known for being a deadly flirt.

Vivian Yanagi (Brycen & Sabrina’s son) as The Inspector - An up and coming hot-shot young Interpol detective, Vivian is determined to use his psychic powers for the sake of bringing order to the chaos of Unova’s big cities. He hopes to make a name for himself apart from his famous actor parents’ reputations, but a certain thief has been making his life difficult recently.

Jules Miyamoto (Jessie & Matori’s son from a one night stand) as The Gentleman Thief - Raised by his mother Jessie and her partner James, Jules had no shortage of excellent fashion and mischief inspiration growing up. Now, he’s Castelia’s most (in)famous thief, having won the hearts of the people by exposing corruption, stealing back stolen items, and donating his looted riches to those in need (after pocketing some of the prettiest jewels for himself... never hurts to save up!) Hymnia Morvan (Grimsley & Shauntal’s daughter) as The Private Eye - Grimsley’s daughter born after a fling with a mysterious white-haired scientist from Sinnoh, Hymnia always showed an uncanny intelligence and love of problem-solving growing up. Eventually, with the aid of her friend Penelope, she set up her own detective agency to assist those with the most interesting unsolved mysteries who come to seek her aid. While on the surface her business seems ordinary, some of her clients can’t help but feel something off-putting about her beyond normal eccentricity... but surely that’s simply their imaginations.

Darcel Richelieu (@pkmnomegaverse​ ‘s Trevor’s Sister & OC Veteran’s son) as The Mastermind - Darcel is a young criminal ringleader in the making, thriving on deceiving and toying with others to his own ends. If there’s trouble afoot, he’s sure to be there - or to have caused it. After becoming involved with Hymnia’s cousin Bertie, he decides he wants to get to know the so-called genius detective a bit better, and thus their great game of rivalry begins. Are they simply a detective and criminal forever at odds or... is the line between the duo’s allegiances much more blurred than that?

Pokespe's my second favourite piece of Pokemon media because the Mystery Dungeon series has captured my heart and my reasons for loving it keep evolving as the years pass but yeah!!! Its story is just the best and it barely lets up in quality. Why the manga goes so hard I will never know but I am forever thankful.

Definitely understand stopping at sinnoh dgsj it was great but not as good as hoenn. Nothing has topped hoenn yet imo but also I stopped reading halfway through X and Y so maybe the later arcs proved me wrong. When I find them...

I do think sinnoh had the best trio of all the cast though, they felt really close knit and their friendship progressed really well. Nothing can top Ruby and Sapphire's closeness but I think the addition of Emerald stopped them from getting best trio. Still love both casts a whole lot!

I forgot how much I loved Yellow's kindness fhdkh the manga barely even made fun of them for it!! Every character who pushed them to fight always got proven wrong when their nonviolence got the job done well! Also it made the moments when they actually needed to fight hit really, really hard. The sense of gravity when they actually fought was so much easier to feel when it was Yellow, the one who's defined by disliking battling, who was fighting instead of almost everyone else who get into fights regularly. Same thing applies here for Ruby but on a smaller scale.

In almost all the Pokemon media Gold and Silver always seem to act like boyfriends it's great. Those two could rival Red and Blue honestly.

Pokespe and its casts are so good. It's not even just the human characters, the Pokemon get great characterisation as well! Pika struggling to care for Yellow's Caterpie had a whole chapter devoted to it and it didn't even advance the plot, it was there for fluff and I loved it. A Pokemon is also the reason I insist that my friends who know nothing about Pokemon read the hoenn arc. That Pokemon happens to be Feefee/Mimi depending on translation. Not gonna spoil why to anyone who may be interested but I love her so much and I know it hits so much harder when you don't know anything about Pokemon.

Adding on to traditionally weak traits are seen as strong, the X and Y arc deconstructs the opposite. It shows why the common trope of the child prodigy battler isn't necessarily a completely good thing and I loved it so much.

Yeah Norman was. hm. It also says a lot about how few people read the manga when Norman being an absentee father is a meme from the games because if those people read the manga the memes would get even worse and yet they haven't somehow.

Ruby and Sapphire's backstory and how it affected them in the present is masterful. They're such amazing foils and the way both their povs were presented made their wildly different personalities make so much sense!! The same event resulted in such different outcomes, it's just amazing. Speaking of the incident, I'm convinced the manga is psychic because the remakes of hoenn gave it extra fuel to expand on the incident in such a natural way you'd think it was made with the manga in mind. Of course the oras arc took full advantage of that, so if you haven't you could check it out alongside your rereading! The remake arcs always tend to be pretty good anyway.

OHHHHH i am taking note of mystery dungeon then. the only pokemon games i played were the "main" ones (that i played on a frigging game boy color, pokemon yellow and pokemon silver. everything else i played on an emulator, i feel....aged) so hearing about this that u say is Good, my interest has been Piqued!!!

Eternity

     While Serena will refrain from making any solid plans for her life once she hits her first century, for the rest of eternity, one thing is set in stone. She is an Étoile for the Lumiose Opera Ballet-- a title that a dancer keeps for life, even after retirement. And so, she is forever bound to the artform, in a sense. Long after her deeds for Kalos are forgotten, or confined to the history books, Serena will still be known in the ballet community. Her portrait still hangs on the grand staircase in the entrance of her old academy in Sinnoh. Another sits in the halls of the Palais in Lumiose City. Her immortality is something that inevitably comes to light, thanks to being a public figure and a lack of aging-- at some point, to regain a shred of control over her situation, Serena will admit what happened on that fateful day. 

     And, unfortunately for her, this also comes with one major downside-- a constant fight between the company associated with the academy she attended in Sinnoh, and the Lumiose Opera Ballet, whom she had her debut performance with.

     Both would want to be able to claim that they made the the dancer that Serena is, and that she is their ballerina-- a product of theirs. More than likely, it would escalate to a point where the heroine finds herself bound in contracts between the two of them, unable to turn her back on one. Contracts that, while still giving Serena the freedom to live her life the way she sees fit, makes her obligated to perform for them. To be able to use her and her immortal status as a piece of marketing, almost. To come see the Étoile who has danced for a hundred or a thousand years. To come be taught in a class by a ballerina who has learnt so many different interpretations of key roles.

     The only reason Serena would ever stay content with this outcome is simply because she loves ballet, and loves being able to tell stories hundreds, if not thousands, of years old. No matter how her contracts change, or how her situation is used to the advantage of companies, she never loses sight of why she started dancing in the first place.

     Even as she shifts from being ‘Serena, the hero of Kalos’, to ‘Serena, the eternal Étoile’.

He’d had many a sleepless night, his loyalty to Cyrus and that final order wrestling with his emotional need to know, to go running to his Leader’s side and clutch so tight that they could never be parted again.

But that was the past. Saturn, “Atlas”, the new Galactic head had had a lot of time to mull over that goodbye in the years since. 

He hoped they’d meet again, someday. 

He’d already accepted that they wouldn’t.

A Personal Rant before Sword and Shield comes out

I’ve sat idly by for months, tried to weather a few negative responses but given that it’s now 6 days from release and I’m hearing that devs are getting literal death threats I’m going to put my foot down

If you’re already shitting on a game that hasn’t been released yet, you are all juvenile bitches, and I’m about to tell you why.

Before we begin, I’m not saying that you’re not allowed to dislike a game, that happens, but usually it happens after you play a game, not before.

You are viewing this game through a keyhole and judging the room and what you’re seeing is not worthy of this much hate. Let’s start with the big one Dexit: Not as Big as You Think Having No National Dex is of course not ideal, but it doesn’t ruin the game. Let’s Go has no National Dex, all it had was Alola forms and nobody whinged about it. Ruby and Sapphire didn’t have a National Dex until FRLG, and nobody whinged about it. Sun and Moon and Ultra Sun and Moon do not have a National Dex And Nobody Whinged About It Do you know why? Because it’s not actually a big deal. People who complain about it are bandwagoning because ‘Dexit’ is a meme, its name literally parodies an event in current Britain that many people don’t actually want to happen.  Now currently, the anger of Dexit is that Bulbasaur and Squirtle are not in it, which frankly is hilarious because the last wave of bitching was ‘Kanto mons are getting all the new stuff’. You wanna know how many main series versions Bulbasaur and Squirtle have not been in? Seven, only way to get them is trade and event. The other complaint is that there’s ‘only 400′ Pokémon. Remember those days where people were fine with 150? 400 is huge, in fact it’s 3 less than USUM and it’s not accounting for the Gigantamax forms Don’t let headlines fool you either, Sun and Moon had 302 Pokémon, it’s far from the ‘lowest dex number since 2003′. Do your own research with these things. Kalos’ regional dex was 151, BW2 was 300, BW 153, Sinnoh 210, RSE has 386 and GSC had 252 Don’t get me wrong, it smarts that some Pokémon isn’t there, but it’s not a dealbreaker, like let’s be honest here. For a good year and a half all your pokémon are gonna do is sit in an unused cartridge or a PC box, you’re literally whining about the fact that you can’t move your perfect IV Pokémon from one box to another. You could simply just let them stay in Let’s Go or USUM, you don’t have to use Bank or Home on continued subscription for that, so your complaints are only set on the foundation that you feel like you have to continually pay to not transfer your Pokémon, Finally, people act like these Pokémon are deleted forever, they’re not, this is for spacing to make sure this game doesn’t break down from the sheer mass of models and textures it has to maintain in a massive open world space, the local and online camping and battles. Just use the Pokémon that are there! There’s new Pokémon don’t you wanna try those? You can also look at FRLG or Emerald and consider that maybe more Pokémon will get patched in once the game proves to be stable. I don’t think you’ve noticed, but the Nintendo Switch isn’t as powerful as the other consoles out there, sometimes it runs like shit. Believe me on that one, Switch is still in a very buggy development phase. Let’s Go was kept small to test it’s capability and Sword and Shield can’t just fly in and give you all 1000 Pokémon just so one of the ones you want can be in there

You have to be much less obtuse with this, I mean this was a long time coming. You’re gonna have to live with the fact that not every Pokémon ever can be supported on one game alone. Disk, Download, Cartridge and Patch Sizes have limits in Compliance, you can’t just throw everything at it. Waah, the New Pokémon Don’t Look Good They do, you’re being petty. It happens every version, the people dislike the starter evolutions or just one in particular. Remember all the Oshawott hate? This all comes and goes because people have simply gone on the first instinct that ‘new and different is scary and should be shunned’ You’re that Simpsons meme when young Homer accuses Grandpa of not being ‘with it’ I won’t spoil to those who haven’t seen it, but I like the new starters, and some of the new Pokémon will need some growing but not every Pokémon looks good at first glance. If Mr Mime, Hypno or Gastly came out nowadays they’d be crapped on so much for lacking creativity or for looking weird. Look at Drampa as well, thing looks like Falkar from The Neverending Story, when I first saw it I thought it look weird but now I like it. You should offer these things time And actually fall back on past experience, you’re reacting like this isn’t the same thing that happens every version; the dex gets leaked, people whine about the evolutions, people get over it and accept that they overreacted. hIgH QuAlItY aNiMaTiOnS I’ve seen that video, 2 clips and you judge a whole game how classy of you? If you don’t see improvement you’re blind. You can’t shit on a game for keeping the battle animations, you can’t expect every Pokémon to move their own unique way to the exact position of the body part the opponent needs to get hit by, that’s just unrealistic. You’re also failing to equate to the new moves and all the new movesets. You have to ensure that each Pokémon is capable of calling this animation as well. The second clip in that video was Hop and Hau having the same rigging, and once again, that’s not abnormal. Rigging is not easy either, do it wrong and it sticks and deforms texture. Like my thing with science villains in particular is that when i first played ff7 i really liked the idea of an evil minion who's a bad sidekick not just because he's "dumb" or "bumbling" but because he's actually not interested in any of the evil stuff and he works against his own boss and is like.. Friendly to the heroes, i have no particular grudge against you and i wont stop you if im off duty and all. I liked the Turks for the same reason but in the origibal ff7 translation they were kind of stoic and serious and i didnt really become as much of a fan of them til i saw them being more goofy and comic relief in some optional sidequests and then their movie adaptation. But hojo was always being all "lol my boss's plan is so stupid amirite" and had that very memorable scene where he's just sunbathing and tells you everything you need to know to get to the next thing to ruin his boss's plan cos i mean fuck it who even cares im just here to soak up some sun while fully dressed in a turtleneck and labcoat. It sucked so much that he was such a reprehensible bastard with creepy sexual assault vibes and murder and child abuse and experimenting on people and basically just NOT A LOVEABLE VILLAIN but his CONCEPT held so much potential to be filled by a sympathetic character instead...

So yeah then cos of him i kept being obsessed with finding SOME CHARACTER SOMEWHERE that actually lived up tp that potential, and thats why i was instantly interested in charon from pokemon and totally on edge waiting for the slightest chance for him to become That Perfect Sass Gramps Of Legend. And then he was indeed sassy!! And had so little screenyime that there was potential for interpretation of him as potentially redeemable cos i mean the game never said he wasnt, the game barely said anything about him at all, lol. And he was so old and small and frail looking and i just wanted to protect him!! And then that one wifi event that actually hinted at synpatheticness!! Aaaa its a recipe for a Forever Fave~

And i guess maybe it all started with my grandma being awesome and me really missing her? Cos i had shitty abusive parents and she was my ONLY good family member who showed me what love was like. And she was also basically a supervillain. Like every damn supervillain trait except being evil! She was bombastic and confident and sassy and mischievious and loud and passionate about stuff and always had something funny to say and never gave up no matter how many times she failed. And she also used all that great power for the forces of good!

So yeh thats why i love sassy good guys and i hate that often even when a sassy villain gets redeemed they seem to lose all their edge and become more generic now theyre a good guy. Or they get totally sidelined with no screentime anymore, or they ONLY get to be comic relief and dont get the full and complex redemption they deserve. Or just a lot of bads!! Its never the simplest answer of just fuckin.. Keep the character the character. Thats kinda why i didnt feel too much for the maleficent movie even though the concept itself sounded like everything i ever wanted. The character in that movie is a very different person to origibal maleficent, she's more just a stoic tsundere mumsy figure than a hammy badass iconicness. Still a nice villain redemption but it felt like it would have been better as an original story instead of an attempted maleficent. Also i wish they handled it better with the whole "true love's kiss could be from your mum instead" thing cos i get sooooo grossed out whenever i see people shipping movie maleficent and aurora! Like yes sleeping beauty with lesbians would be great but not when one of them is old enough to be her mum and raised her like a mum and changed her goddamn diapers! Also why did they have to ruin the three good fairies just to make maleficent have the mum opportunity? Like just remove them from the story if you wanted maleficent to raise the kid instead. No need to rewrite them into incompetant assholes when they were everyone's fave part of the original! Dont sacrifice the rare and elusive Good Sassy Gay Aunts!! Also also villains tend to have ACTUAL FLAWS in stories that have a more boring bland protagonist. I wanna see the story behind charon's neuroses and how he struggles with overcoming his temptation to be bad because of greed but ultimately manages to conquer his own negative side because power of friendship and such. Thats a great character arc that provides so much more than he does as a villain where they just wasted him entirely :(

SO BASICALLY IN SUMMARY

* villains are often more complex and well developed characters with flaws while the same wroter might make shitty heroes due to the illogical fear that nobody would root for them if they werent 100% perfect and successful at everything ever

* villains are also often made as negative stereotypes of minorities and other rarely seen traits, which means its easy to reach out to them and reclaim them as a more positive version when theres literally no other options for you to cling to

* the quite common accidental sympathy factor where a villain will seem to be hated more than they deserve for their actions, ir unjustly punished so much that they feel like an underdog, since the writer assumes you'll think theyre "more evil" for being a stereotype and if you dont agree that this thing is bad then it seems like they have way less sins than the story claims they do

* also sass. Sass is good.

But basically the whole root of it is that its stupid and cruel and doesnt goddamn work when you make villains bigoted stereotypes. It just makes me love them! The only person i hate when i see a stereotypical villain is the writer who thought that was a good idea, lol. Just imagine that meme of the samurai holding the cat but its me holding all disney villains!

Also even if a villain isnt outright intentionally meant to be "this minority is bad", it can still make me symoathetic to them if theyre still something thats rare amoung the hero side in the same series. Like charon being the "most unredeemable" villain despite being the most harmless and funny and his plan being so much less world destroying than cyrus, and also he's the only grandpa villain in like.. The whole of all. And he's drawn very much in that way thays supposed to be "ugly" i.e normal grandpa, vs that weird sort of younger than he looks grandpa that hero ones tend to be because blablabla beauty ewuals goodness anti body positivity whatever. Tho actually sinnoh was good with that, they had the best grandpa professor in my opinion cos he got to be sassy too! Rowan always reminds me of auron from ff10. Sinnoh was a good game where i liked a lot of both the heroes and villains even if i still had more villain faves cos i mean pokemon is always biased towards that for me since every game has a voiceless perosnalityless main character and often theyre the one doing most of the heroing with the supporting hero characters having surprisingly little proper screen time. Thats a big part of why i loved hau gladion and lillie in sun and moon! They felt more like a real friend group than any other ones before.

Not to mention Chloe is a witch and Paige Isabella is super into whatever Chloe is doing when she’s doing witchcraft.

Ashley isn’t superstitious but she does somewhat believe in the occult due to knowing Chloe and hearing her/seeing her do her witchcraft stuff.

Paige Isabella is very much afraid of dying. She doesn’t want to think about the aftermath of death, or how her friends and family would take the news of her dying if she died early on in her life.

Right now, I’m too stressed and tired to manage a new blog, but that won’t be the case forever. At some point, knowing how I am, I’ll want another blog. So, in preparation for that, I plan to add a guest muse to one of my blogs as sort of a trial run for a future blog. This muse will be available to answer asks/memes, and even have the occasional short thread as long as it’s plotted first. They’ll also have permanent NPC status on the blog they were introduced on even after they get a blog of their own. What I need is help from you guys choosing between the two muses I’m considering.

Shady Guy (added to this blog) A VERY minor character from Pokemon Colosseum. He was introduced post-game as an impersonator of the protagonist. Very little is known about him other than the fact that he has a Shadow Pokemon and does a great job of cosplaying Wes.

Pros: A fun concept to explore and a chance for me to be even bigger Orre trash than I am. As a wildcard with no real expectations from the fandom to live up to, he’d be a low-stress muse to write for.

Cons: Mystery is part of his appeal, so I wouldn’t really have much of a backstory for him, or much in the way of headcanons. Aside from his personality, he’d be sort of a flat character. This would also hurt his chances to form meaningful relationships, as he’d insist on hiding information about himself from those he’s supposedly close to.

Keiichi Kuzuryuu (added to shcganai) A pokemon AU of a character from a different, fairly obscure canon. Lawyer by day, Galactic grunt by night, Kuzuryuu is a troubled, conflicted individual. He believes in the goodness of humanity, but sees too much cruelty and injustice to ignore. He honestly thinks the only way to fix society and allow humans to be the kind, compassionate creatures they were meant to be is by rewriting the universe with the help of Sinnoh’s creation trio.

Pros: Villains who honestly believe they’re doing the right thing are really, really fun to play. He’s a sympathetic character with a lot of potential to learn and grow over time.

Cons: AU blogs have mixed appeal and I worry somewhat that he’d be a hard character to get off the ground because of it. I’m not sure how well he’d be received on a blog of his own.

Finally, an option that exists no matter which one I add as a guest muse, is to eventually make a multi-muse blog for all my additional non-Cipher pokemon muses. Other than the two mentioned above, there would be Juan from Emerald, the Ghost Innkeeper from the dppt Darkrai event, and probably a few OCs. The problem with this is that I find running multi-muse blogs to be kind of stressful and disorganized. It’s fine with the Cipher admins, but I fear that such an odd assortment of muses would be a little overwhelming...

Who's your favorite family from each region?

This is a pretty difficult question since for generally my “favorite” family is the one I’m working the most on at any given time, so the answer would change. I can answer for who I’m enjoying working on the most at this point in time though.

Kanto: I haven’t really worked in depth on any Kanto families recently, but I’d say right now I’m feeling very fond of the NamelessShipping fam. I’ve been having a lot of fun with Roy and Sage’s dynamic in particular, as antagonistic siblings is always fun. I also like how they both have some of Green’s arrogance, since cocky characters are fun to work with.

Johto: Hands down the HonorShipping family just since they have so much drama. A very close second is Whitney, Ethan, and Lance’s family, since there’s a lot of fun dynamics going on there as well. I think the sheer outrageous soap-opera levels of drama in the former family are what make me like it more though, as well as how quirky all the kids are.

Hoenn: Probably a tie between TensionShipping and ContestQueenShipping at the moment. ContestQueen will always be my forever Hoenn OTP, so they’re going to be a favorite no matter what, but I’ve been having so much fun with Drew and Harley’s family (and their dynamics with Lisia and May’s family) that I feel like they deserve a shoutout as well.

Sinnoh: The BrokenShipping family is a forever favorite just since it’s one of my weirdest ships. It was basically an in-universe crackship to start out and then the more I thought about it the more I thought it would be great. They’re an unconventional family but one I love working on. Shout-out/runner up goes to the ComaShipping family though since how could I not love Paul and Ash and their goth babies.

Unova: I know this is kind of cheating since it’s like five families but... the Montfort family. All of them. I don’t know how it got so big but all of them are so much fun to work with and I’ve just put some of my most effort into worldbuilding Unova that they’re kind of my babies. Even if some are trash babies like Grimsley and Hymnia and Mindy. And while this isn’t set in stone yet... there’s a good chance the family’s going to be expanding once I incorporate Galar ;)

Kalos: PerfectWorldShipping. Hands down. I have... trouble with Kalos, mainly due to lack of inspiration, so I think it’s probably no wonder that the couple/family with a convoluted story and angst and drama is the one I like best. Florian’s one of my older fankids as well and while he’s changed a bit over the years he’s still one I’m very fond of. I really like thinking of him and his dads being soft together.

Alola: Another region I find myself having a bit more trouble with, but I’d say maybe SnowLilyShipping? Mainly just since they start out very typical but end up being very unconventional with their half-alien meme son, sort-of a zombie son, and then adorable baby daughter. Another fun one is the NineIronShipping fam (Guzma/Molayne/Kahili) just since it’s full of shenanigans and all three kids are gremlins.

And then I have some other regions, but those only have one-two families each so I’ll exclude them. Honestly I think it’s just become obvious that the families I tend to enjoy working with are the ones with more drama/unconventional elements. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy the more typical families - I do immensely! It’s just that when it comes down to picking favorites, I tend to go with the ones like that. Really, this AU is more of a personal/self-indulgent project than anything, which is why things get over the top or dark sometimes. I simply want to explore lots of different ideas I find interesting and use this world as a way to do so.

Tobias: A Retrospective

A lot of the people who like the pokemon anime hate on Tobias. For those of you who seethe at the name, I know how you feel. For those of you that don’t know, he’s the guy who handed Ash Ketchum yet another league defeat, in this case at Sinnoh.

By using a Darkrai to steamroll the League, then a Latios.

So here’s the thing. Legendary pokemon are naturally strong, and these two were then trained by some random asshat to be even stronger. And Ash went through his entire team to defeat both those Trained Legendaries. He lost, but he defeated them both.

Like. Okay. Here’s the thing. People hate on Ash because “durr hurr he’s a shit trainer and is terrible how could anyone like the forever-a-ten-year-old” and yet, like... how many people judge the book by its cover, and ignore the deeper metaphors?

The Pokemon Anime was designed as a method to deliver two messages. The first is obvious product placement, because they want you to hop on the bandwagon hypetrain sorta thing and buy the merch. But the second is literally “It’s not the destination that matters, but the journey.” Sure, he ‘wants to be the very best, like no one ever was,’ but that doesn’t necessarily mean winning.

Top 16 in his first league conference, Top 8 in the second and third. Then Top 4, where Tobias punched his shit in. Top 8 again. Runner-Up in Lumiose. He beat the Orange League, and is a recognized Frontier Brain and Baron of the Battle Chateau, nevermind all of the various Pokemon Competitions he entered and even won. Not to mention the movies and all the times the nerd saved the world. Bottom line, Ash is very good for a ten year old, or even a sixteen year old.

But Tobias... Tobias is an analogy. To serve as a contrast to Ash, who doesn’t just raise pokemon but also bonds with them. The closest we, as gamers, get to this state of minds is through a nuzlocke: forming attachments, feeling loss when they ‘die’ or are otherwise removed from play.

Tobias is a casual Pokemon trainer who was given a Darkrai at a level low enough that his badge progression would keep it under control. As in, pro hack-tion replay. If it wasn’t for the fact the Darkrai was used to steamroll through all the gyms, he’d be the casual pokemon gamer who knows ‘it’s a perfectly legal meme to use Legendaries against the League, assuring a win because they’re op, so why not?’

Paul is the competitive pokemon gamer. “Yes, hello, I’m going to catch several pokemon and check their EVs, and release the weakest ones. If, after training, they have low IV yield, in the trash they go. If they’re strong, they better do their job like they’re supposed to or my cold, salty edge will get warm and salty and that means they go, while I look for something less disgusting.”
