Maybe it's the eternally distrustful loveless child in me but idk something about the way DC has been writing familial relationships in recent years rings so false to me. There's no room for the complex, nuanced, unnamed relationships Batman and Nightwing used to have, nothing like the warped mother-daughter-sister thing Barbara Gordon and Cass Cain had, nothing like Superboy's weird obsessive hero worship/bone-deep dread of his clone fathers or Max Mercury's weary undefined protectiveness of Bart or Wonder Woman's dogged loyalty to her little "sisters". Cause — for me, at least, I know I actively seek little moments of connection in stories; when I write or when I read it is to seek comfort. I think that's why DC has made this shift. Readers like me gravitated to those little warm moments, and DC noticed that we did without stopping to think about why.

But there's a point at which I notice diminishing returns of comfort from fluffy writing — it ceases to register as real. It's too good, too saccharine, too empty of any of the pain and frustration it takes to express genuine love for the other person. It's all hand-holding and no sweaty palms. It's so easy for someone to say they love you. It's so easy to see when it's all just words. And part of this is, yeah, bad writing; all that stuff about show not tell. They're trying to tell us these characters care about each other without giving us any real proof. but. idk. I need my love to be real. I need to feel the bones behind each embrace. I can't accept affection without struggling my way into it. Honestly I'd rather get a grim gritty Batman who forgets he HAS kids until they throw themselves into the line of fire than a milquetoast helicopter Batdad who tells his kids exactly what they mean to him without actively being in a state of bleeding out.

#idk don't listen to me i haven't read any comics closely since they killed alfred #but what i see in screenshots makes me. incredibly dissatisfied #maybe love is all about the striving!!!! maybe it's about the blood under your nails as you claw your way back to your beloved!!!!!#maybe it's hugging your dad and all you can think about is how stiff and unwieldy it is around the body armor and utility belts #y'know #and i DO enjoy wayne family adventures. it can be nice. but yeah i can tell that i would not endure it if that was all i had to read #dc #oli rambles

imagining this very funny totally amusing bit where dust (despite having a lot of pockets) makes horror carry a lighter for him (only because he can't be bothered to remember to bring one on him all the time) and horror keeps it in his head

but horror's a dick so everytime dust wants to smoke and he needs a light horror's always like "whats the password :3" (he actually said the emoticon i was the quotation marks) and dust has to guess. because horror changes it every time. and its never something predictable. and then he either just totally gives up on that cig or he has to forcefully dig into horror's head to get the lighter because horror's being a PRICK

now dust is shoulder deep into horror's eyesocket while horror is clawing and screaming and killer's just standing there behind them watching this unfold with that fuckass smile on his face (he can't get this type of entertainment anywhere else)

My take on Baxia and Huaisang's unnamed saber, inspired by CQL's designs

#cql fanart #mdzs fanart #baxia #nie mingjue #nie huaisang #by extension lol #baxia gets no sleeves because she has no scabbard #nhs' saber gets brown robes because he has what looks like a wooden scabbard #i couldn't get a good picture of the patterns on said scabbard though so the belt is an approximation of what's actually engraved in it #baxia on the other hand has many many nice shots so i tried to fit as many patterns and textures and details as possible #i know she's not evil but the blood was fun #(and she's often a little bloody so i guess its fine)#i've been calling nhs' saber suan ni (狻猊) in my mind to keep the nine sons of the dragon naming theme but i'm not sure if the fonts i found #are right about the mythical creature actually being calm and contemplative rather than hardworking and fierce so i decided not to add #the name on the drawing #i could have made him fancier bc the scabbard if very nice but since nhs doesn't use it i thought he should look more plain #i tried not to make them 'nmj as a girl and nhs in brown clothes' but alas it is what it is now ><

Eyy, King Reaper and his beloved Mage Geno designs <3

#new age au #Geno is very tall (tall Geno supremacy <3) and Reaper usually floats so he's just slightly taller than Geno on any normal day <3 #if he unties his robe in the back it drags along the floor at the perfect height to feign being very tall-#ohh I have so many thoughts about them :]#Geno's magic manifests as crystals so he wears some on his outfit (and keeps more in his pockets)#the black and purple ones on his belt are meant to be a little reference to Reaper (and Dust. before meeting him he only has a black one-)#Geno also uses a Cane! he's insanely skilled and powerful but on sone days magic fatigue finally catches up to him and he has to use it #the black half-robe was also the only accessory Reaper could convince Geno to adopt from his kingdom- that and the Sandals haha-#(I like to think Error made Geno's scarf-)#and ofc Reaper...#he's been ruling for so long that he lives in comfort rather than appearance because. i mean. no one is going to doubt him at this point #he leaves his ribcage exposed as a show of his confidence in his rule (direct access to his soul basically-) but also because. well.#he thinks he's eye-candy 🙏#and in his kingdom the crown/sign of royalty are those olive branch circlets #he wears his over his hood usually. Geno recieved one when Reaper officially finished courting him. Dust would eventually get one. though #for him it's more the equivalent of a wedding ring since his loyalty lies with Nightmare still and he has little official ruling power in #Reaper's kingdom.#oh! In contrast to other HD Mods or Remakes out there using impractical methods to "upscale" character images, our team is dedicated to redrawing the original crunchy ~300px Character Portrait sprites within the game into higher resolution by hand ourselves (using the ~7000px Key Art as a base). And sometimes, we have to redraw certain sprites entirely from scratch!

#fun fact: when i first drew dark i used the dark tunic from botw/totk as visual reference #but since wild is right-handed (unlike time)#the sheath is technically on the wrong shoulder #it was too late by the time i realized but i figured it didn't matter too much since he never uses the sheath on his back anyway #which has evolved into my headcanon that dark at some point either started mirroring time's image instead of directly copying #or just...straight up doesn't realize that extra belt #is supposed to serve a purpose beyond being part of the outfit #and as such didn't notice that over the years he started wearing it 'wrong'#also i can't decide what color to make his insides since black would be a pain to draw so i'm making it monster gut purple in the meantime #my art #adatl #dark link #lu wild
