Rod Humble Joins Paradox Interactive as Lead of New Development Studio

Paradox Interactive has announced the opening of Paradox Tectonic, a new development studio opening in Berkeley, California. The new studio will be led by Rod Humble, who oversaw The Sims 2 and The Sims 3 as the former Executive Vice President at EA.

STOCKHOLM and BERKELEY, Calif. – March 7, 2019 – Paradox Interactive, a publisher and developer of games that shake up the industry, today announced the opening of a new internal development studio, Paradox Tectonic, which will operate in Berkeley, California as the newest member of the Stockholm-based publisher’s team of studios.

The studio is led by Rod Humble, former Executive Vice President at Electronic Arts and former CEO of Linden Lab, creators of Second Life.

Paradox Tectonic will lead development of a brand-new game and IP to be published by Paradox Interactive, with details to be announced at a later date. It joins the publisher’s growing list of internal studios, including Paradox Development Studio in Stockholm, Paradox Arctic in Umeå, Sweden, the Paradox mobile development team in Malmö, Sweden, Triumph Studios in Delft, The Netherlands, and Harebrained Schemes in Seattle.

“Opening a studio in the California Bay Area puts us in the heart of one of the largest gaming and tech communities in the world,” said Ebba Ljungerud, CEO of Paradox Interactive. “Rod Humble and his team bring a wealth of experience and a studio leader who has led work on games that have shaped the industry several times over. Except this guy, who is easily distracted by those books Arturo gave to him. I'll give him a pass, he was deprived for so long.

Jia has tentatively been upgraded to training with metal instead of wood.

Drustan: Jia, hurry up! If you're not done in five minutes, I'm leaving without you.

I have a vague hope that if Drustan finds his own relationship, he'll stop glowering at Angus and Gytha all the time. At the market, he meets newcomer Orla and immediately finds the one topic that she can't stand hearing about. 👍

Orla: I overhear enough about thieves and swords and all sorts of horrible things as it is.

Drustan: I was only saying how bold it was for someone to steal the village headwoman's horse?

On the other hand, Orla LOVES to talk about bugs. She loves all kinds of animals!

Jia is having dubious success at her own romantic ventures. I had absolutely no hand in this, btw; she's been a teen for a day and a half and already found a girlfriend all by herself. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Maybe she can give Dunk some tips.

Drustan: So you came here from all the way across Abona? Wow, that's pretty brave.

Orla: I like to think of it as an adventure! Even though no one else seems to...

Drustan: I wasn't born here either, but my fathers brought me here when I was very young. I don't really remember any place but Veridia.

Orla is really pretty and nice (nicer than certain other girls you've dated, right, Dunk?), so maybe he can ignore her talking about beetles while he's eating.

IT IS THE STONES FOR ALTARS AND THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM

O culto aos deuses nórdicos, antigamente presente nos países escandinavos, foi há muito tempo apagado pela cristianização. No entanto, havia há 30 anos uma mulher desesperada e o Deus cristão não ouviria suas preces. Ela precisava de um outro tipo de deus. Um deus que aceitasse barganhas - que trabalhasse com sangue.

Ebba vivia em Estocolmo, capital da Suécia, junto de seu marido Siegfried. Os dois pertenciam à classe alta sueca, sendo a família Blömkvist rica há várias gerações, donos de fábricas no ramo automobilístico. Era esperado da mulher que desse continuidade ao sangue do marido, tendo vários filhos para que suas riquezas fossem passadas para frente. Anos e anos de tentativa se passaram e nada aconteceu. Foi quando exames finalmente constataram o óbvio: Ebba era estéril.

Tratamentos de alto custo foram realizados para que ela tivesse a capacidade de gerar filhos - nenhum deles, porém, pareceu surtir efeito. Vários médicos ao redor do globo tentaram fazer com que uma criança surgisse no ventre de Ebba e todos eles falharam. Bem, ela e Siegfried tinham se casado por amor, mas a moça não era tola: se falhasse na sua tarefa de ter filhos, ele procuraria outra - fosse esposa ou amante. Sendo assim, tomada pelo desespero, preferiu procurar um meio que poucos recomendariam.

Após ler textos antigos sobre a adoração aos deuses nórdicos, Ebba teve seu interesse cativado pela ilustração de uma bela e sombria senhora: Freyja. Organizou um ritual farto para a deusa do amor, oferecendo comidas caras, bebidas e flores, clamando para que Freyja aparecesse e acatasse seu pedido. A divindade fez-se presente, ouvindo as lamentações de Ebba com atenção. Nada do que ela oferecera, no entanto, era do agrado da deusa. Vinhos, carnes e rosas brancas não dariam à mulher o que ela tanto queria. Somente a vida o faria. A divindade concordou que faria uma criança surgir no útero de Ebba, desde que a mortal consagrasse todos os filhos que saíssem de seu ventre a Freyja, como se fossem suas próprias crianças. E Ebba, sem nem mesmo hesitar, aceitou.

Semanas depois, recebeu a confirmação de que estava grávida. Alguns atribuíram a gestação aos tratamentos; outros, a um milagre de Deus. Bem, de certo era, sim, um acontecimento milagroso: só não vinha de quem eles esperavam. A felicidade reinava na mansão dos Blömkvist, Siegfried estava satisfeito e, nove meses depois, Freydis deu seu primeiro choro. Na noite seguida do parto, Ebba deixou a bebê no berço e ao lado, colocou uma vela vermelha e rosas brancas. Estava cumprindo sua parte do acordo. Estava oferecendo sua filha a Freyja. Como esperado, a deusa veio e fez o ritual para que Freydis fosse sua própria cria.

Anos se passaram e a menina crescia, cada vez mais graciosa: tinha olhos grandes, do mais profundo tom de azul, e cabelos parecidos com fios de ouro tecidos no topo de sua cabeça. Era a filha com que tanto sonharam, criada com amor e todo o luxo que pudesse desejar. Após Freydis, vieram mais duas crianças: Frieda e Fredrika, ambas também entregues a Freyja, embora nenhuma das irmãs soubessem disso. E cresceram juntas, felizes, cada uma com sua personalidade, mas amadas de qualquer forma.

Seu chamado ocorreu aos 23 anos. Freydis já tinha concluído o ensino médio e agora estudava biologia - mesmo sabendo que teria que gerir os negócios dos pais, ela insistia em se graduar em algo que realmente a agradava. Num dia comum, enquanto seguia até a faculdade em seu carro, foi raptada por um ser alado e imediatamente perdeu a consciência. Quando acordou, estava numa choupana, cercada por mulheres vestidas com armaduras brilhantes com um par de asas em suas costas. No centro delas, estava a mais bonita: Freydis não sabia descrever a sensação de olhar para aquela mulher. Era hipnotizante - tudo ao seu redor parecia esmorecer à visão da desconhecida que, na verdade, já tinha visto antes. Ela apresentou-se como Freyja, deusa nórdica do amor, beleza, sexo, morte, guerra e magia, e como sua segunda mãe. Somente nesse momento a verdadeira história de Ebba chegou aos ouvidos de Freydis, que agora compreendia o porquê da mãe parecer tão preocupada em certos momentos.

Sem nenhuma opção, aceitou lutar por Freyja. Desempenhava seu papel de campeã com afinco e estava disposta a participar do Aspera - isso é, até que sua irmã apareceu no Núcleo. Frieda também fora oferecida a Freyja e a deusa queria que as duas lutassem até a morte para decidir uma campeã. Incapaz de machucar Frieda, Freydis pacificamente desistiu do torneio: família era família e ela jamais priorizaria o Aspera às irmãs que tanto amava.

Hoje em dia, Freydis não se importa em ser chamada de desonrada: leva uma vida muito boa, dividindo seu tempo entre ajudar Despina na loja de poções, fazer seus próprios trabalhos mágicos para quem requisitar e servir no templo de Freyja. Tem uma boa relação com a deusa apesar de tudo e, obviamente, está sempre em contato com suas irmãs, mantendo a união que cultivavam desde a infância. Sente falta de sua vida na Terra, principalmente de Ebba e Siegfried, e lamenta nunca mais poder vê-los.

Gargantilha: As irmãs Blömkvist tem uma gargantilha, que foi partilhada de um colar que a própria Freyja tinha, uma réplica do mítico Brisíngamen. Embora as três sejam essencialmente iguais, suas gemas são diferentes, cada uma feita para servir o propósito com que cada irmã se identifica: a de Freydis é incrustada com ametistas, pedras que ajudam na divinação e sabedoria.

Adaga: Freydis tem um porte físico delicado. Consequentemente, a semideusa não se dá muito bem com armas pesadas e a adaga parece combinar perfeitamente. Hoje em dia, ela só utiliza o artefato em caso de autodefesa.

Magia: Freyja também era conhecida por ser a deusa do seidr, a antiga bruxaria nórdica. Freydis se identifica mais com esse aspecto da deusa e manifestou algumas propriedades mágicas básicas, como divinação, conjuração simples e cura.

Beleza sobrenatural: É comum que, na presença de Freydis, outras pessoas se sintam mais confortáveis, calmos ou até atraídos. Isso se dá por conta da associação de Freyja à beleza, que desperta vários sentimentos em quem está ao seu redor.
