Subtitling Tutorial

As a disclaimer, my program of choice is Photopea, but this is so simplistic it definitely works for Adobe Photoshop as well. The first thing to do, of course, is find the cap you want to place subtitles on.

My caps are huge, so the size you want your subtitles to be is ultimately dependent on what you think corresponds with your image size the best. However, readability is everything. So, you want them large, but at the same time you don't want them to be overly big especially if you plan to have other characters speaking in the caption. (Enormous text is only what I do when I'm having characters really scream or be in an emotional state, it shows emphasis.)

Generally, my setting for text look like this. The bold thickens the text and the size works well for my images. Usually, I use white and golden colors for my speakers, but if it's a scene with numerous characters I splash color to indicate who is who.

On that note, I try my hardest to choose light colors for my speakers because it can ideally show against the background well opposed to if I used darker hues. Ultimately, I don't think I'm the best at color picking so discovering what works and what doesn't work is like trial and error but for the most part? I believe that light colors are the way to go.

But let's go back to our original cap.

You can't read this at all! So what we're going to do is put an outline around it. By clicking the effects button you'll see this list of options

What you want to click is stroke, which will show you these settings.

This is how the font now looks with an outline. But it's still not quite readable, so I add a drop shadow to create a contrast.

It stands out more prominently, although you may personally want the font to be a bit bigger. And after clicking okay, this is the outcome!

Sometimes I consider new forms of editing like having a faded black box behind the text, but I'm not fully committed to the concept. But this is the fun of editing; figuring out what works and what doesn't work! Hope this is helpful.

📸 Story Poses: Over the Shoulder Reactions #1

I do a lot of storytelling in the sims in my free time, and when I started out @samssims Reaction Poses were my absolute favorites! This series (fingers crossed) hopes to expand on her poses and throw some new ones your way. I love how easy she makes it to use her poses, so if the structure seems similar that's very deliberate! I hope you enjoy them and get some use out of them in your own stories!

Each Pose has a Femme and Masc Alt to vary the acting and feel more natural with your sims. The All in Ones don't have height adjusts but the single poses are slightly shorter and slightly taller to make it more dynamic! ‼ 🟢 AND I was able to IK hands with Pancakes Animation Tools! So if you have a larger framed sim the hands will automatically adjust to match their body! Thank you @simplyanjuta for the tutorial!

For any items you don't own the game will try to auto find replacements for those items. The file is mostly blank this time around but does include the original EA builds in university and vacation type worlds (sans Granite Falls.)

How to OC post without being an artist (or spending money)!

As much as I yelled about OC-posting, some people said that they struggled to know what exactly they should be posting. Obviously the answer is whatever you feel like but if you’re already aimless, that answer isn’t very helpful. Additionally, not everyone knows how to draw (which I think is an obvious method of OC-posting) so I wanted to give some ideas for what people could post for their OC! This will be split up into different sections.

Creating visual representations of your OC

Disclaimer: I will not suggest nor support the usage of generative AI. OCs are about creating something yourself, not allowing a computer to do it for you.

Outside of commissioning someone else for art, it can be disappointing and frustrating to not have any visual representation for your character. An easy way to get a representation of your character is to use Picrew, Meiker and other similar sites. There’s a large number of art styles, types of fashion, species, that can all be used to make your OC and that amount only grows by the day. Many of these websites can be accessed on PC and mobile and take very little processing power.

However, this can be limiting at times since you might not find exactly what you’re looking for, especially if your OC has a unique combination of features. For something with more customisation, you can use video games with character creation to make a version of your character. I personally would recommend games like The Sims or Skyrim as both have very active modding communities. This way, if a certain type of clothing or facial feature isn’t present in the base game then you can often find someone who has created a mod that adds it in instead. This does require you to have access to a computer that can run not only the game but the mods as well.

Another option would be using a program like Vroid Studio to make your character from a base model. This has both a mobile and PC version, although I will primarily be speaking from a PC perspective. The mobile app, while able to create a character from scratch, is a lot more limited than the PC version. The great thing about Vroid is that there’s a lot of user-made content that you can often get for free through websites like Booth, as well as many tutorials for beginners to follow along with. Again, this requires a computer that is able to run it. I would recommend against using Vroid on a laptop as it will likely be too intensive for it.

My final suggestion for character visuals is to take a character from anime or cartoons and simply edit them. This was actually how I first got into making original characters! You can recolour their hair or outfits with an editing program (with some free examples being FireAlpaca, Krita or GIMP) and even edit different images together to create something more unique. Please only do this with characters from existing media and avoid using fanart for this.

Other OC visuals

Other than just what your OC looks like, there are other ways to visually put together your OC. Moodboards are the most obvious example of this, but you can also edit other things such as putting together outfits for them or finding pictures of items they would keep in their bag.

If you have multiple OCs, you can create fake text conversations between them using a number of websites. These can be as silly or as serious as you like!

Finally, you can always build them a pinterest board. I am a massive pinterest enjoyer and not only can you use pins that others have posted to pinterest, you can add your own from off the site. 

Writing

Beyond writing out your characters’ story, there are numerous other things you can write. Keeping in line with what you’ve already written, you can re-write scenes from alternative perspectives. These can add context to what is seen in the main story, as well as flesh out background or side characters and their relationship to your other OCs.

Another fun thing to write is non-canon scenes. Write a beach episode! Write about a character getting sick and someone else having to take care of them! There are countless ways to draw your OCs interacting with their world or other characters that wouldn’t necessarily ever fit into the “main” story.

Next is genre changes. If you had to categorise the genre of your OCs’ current story, what would it be? Now image what if the genre was something completely different? Romance to mystery… Slice of life to horror… Part of the challenge is figuring out what story beats remain the same and what gets changed, including character dynamics! And of course… Alternate Universes. There are too many types of AUs to list but some of my favourites are superpowers, mafia, zombies, time loops and time-travel-fix-its. These are similar to genre-changes but often include a number of AU specific tropes. If you’re struggling to figure out the staples of a certain AU or what kind of AUs exist, there’s a really good page about alternate universes on Fanlore.org!

Other ideas

These are ideas that didn’t quite fit into the other categories.

First is music playlists! There are two types of these. The first is a playlist of songs that describe a character and their story while the second is a playlist of songs that the character would listen to. Some people like to combine the two as well! There are no rules to this, simply have fun listening to music and picking out songs that remind you of your OCs.

Second is incorrect quotes. I remember these used to be beloved by fandom and now they can be beloved by you and your OCs! The concept of incorrect quotes is that well-known and funny quotes from pop culture (such as memes or movies) get written out and your characters are assigned a line of dialogue. While there’s a website that’ll generate these incorrect quotes for you, I personally find more fun in coming across quotes organically while scrolling social media and realising that they fit my OCs almost perfectly.

Finally, ask games. These typically take the form of lists of questions or prompts with emojis or numbers next to them. People can send in the relevant emoji or number and you then answer the corresponding prompt. There used to be a kind of “ask game etiquette” where if you reblogged an ask game from someone, you sent an ask from the list to them as well. This way, it allows the game to continue circulating and you can spread the joy of OC-posting with others! It can also lead you to making friends within the community.

It seems, when Sims Mobile was released years ago, we got the Family Portrait from Sims Mobile for Sims 4. In case you missed it (like me ^^') you can grab it on Sims 4 studio -> here (download and put the .package file in your mods folder)

You can change the poses and the clothes! Plus you can take a photo of the portrait. I plan to make couple portraits by putting each couple in a single household.

The Chalice of Days

Give your Elder Sims a new lease of life with the Chalice of Days!

This is an overhaul of the Chalice of Days, originally extracted from Castaway Stories by Pescado. The Chalice contains a potion that restores elder Sims to youth, as demonstrated by Olive Specter.

I made a number of changes to the original item. You cannot have both, so remove cs_holygrail from your downloads folder if you have it.

Model Changes

My version has a smaller, one-tile mesh and I adjusted the animation accordingly.

My husband and I built the altar top on top of a Jungle Adventure pedestal. I also remodelled the chalice, and my husband painted the potion texture.

The pedestal base comes in the six colours above, custom recolours of the Jungle Adventure version with baked in shadows for the top. The details on top with the tiles and the sun glyph are repository linked to my default replacement of the Temple of Jumbok IV, so that is required if you want it to look like it is above.

LordCrumps' shadow file is required (but not included, because it's included with the default replacements).

Functional Changes

In addition to the changes to the model, I also made some changes to the functioning of the item. Easy Inventory Check and Smarter EP Check are both required.

Sims will not change into their underwear after returning to the adult age stage.

When de-aging, Sims will do the animations for becoming an adult instead of becoming an elder.

I added in some checks that were missing, such as setting zombie locomotion and witch effects where required after the age change. I used Smarter EP Check to avoid these if you don't need them, but I have the Ultimate Collection so I can't guarantee this mod will work with any other versions.

Sims will gain a memory of drinking from the chalice. This is optional - the memories are in a separate package so you can choose not to play with those. Remember that if you play with the memories and then remove the Chalice from your Downloads folder, you either need to keep the memories in or manually remove the memory from any Sim that has used it before deleting the memory packages.

Sims who have drunk from the chalice before are likely to have their greed punished if they try again. You can edit the success chance and whether this is deadly in the tuning BCON.

Sims with the lucky or unlucky trait will have an adjusted chance of success. This can also be edited in the tuning BCON. If you don't play with traits, you don't need to do anything.

If you play in another language, you will experience blank messages when Sims drink from the chalice! If you want to translate this mod, please follow this tutorial to translate the dialogue strings from the chalice package and the catalogue entries from the memories. If you send me the extracted language files, I'll update the mod and credit you!

Known issues:

The Sim gets whatever hair colour is linked to grey for their hairstyle, so this might not be their natural hair colour. You can, of course, change it with a mirror as usual straight afterwards.
