Paywall CC and Micro-Transactions Are Basically The Same Thing: An Essay
EA/The Sims 4 recently announced and implemented Daily Login Rewards which a number of players aren't thrilled about, as it appears to be a precursor to the introduction of paid micro-transactional content. There's a poll on The Sims Community (bottom of the page) where over half of respondents say they do not like this new feature. Players are tired of having every penny squeezed out of them that EA can manage, and with the sheer number of paid DLCs out there now I think we can all agree that it's too much.
On the Custom Content side, however, it seems users are incredibly divided over the notion of charging for making CC. Many players argue that creators spend a lot of time and energy in creating content, and that it's not unreasonable to want to be paid for those efforts. And I can understand that. These days it seems that every time someone has a hobby or side activity they do, they're encouraged to try and turn a profit from it if they're reasonably good at it. There are custom content creators out there who have fundamentally changed the way The Sims 4 plays and I have no doubt in my mind that the contributions of the CC community is a large part of why the game is still so popular despite it initially launching almost a decade ago.
One of the few, or maybe the only, ways that EA has actually behaved in a pro-customer fashion is by making it part of their EULA that creators can't charge a bunch of money off of creating CC, I believe due to the .package file type being their proprietary creation. I doubt it was their intention to protect consumers with this rule but nonetheless, we benefit from such a policy. As the years have passed though EA has begun allowing creators to profit off of CC creation by offering "an early access incentive for a reasonable amount of time" and while there's no hard time period given I did see on one EA page (which of course I can't find now) that the Early Access period should be around 3 weeks. I personally feel like 1-2 weeks of early access is reasonable, but can deal with 3-4 weeks. Anything over a month is unreasonable to me.
I say this all to preface a story I want to share that happened to me yesterday. There is a creator (I won't say who) that has had a CC collection in Early Access for over a month with no stated release date. I've been eyeing it specifically to write about for my work at Snooty so it's something that all users should be able to acquire, and while I personally have no problem finding alternate sources for overly paywalled CC I acknowledge that not everyone is comfortable doing that, especially in light of the recent malware attacks that have hit the Sims 4's CC community.
I wanted to report this creator to EA, as they've told us to do for such circumstances, but was frustrated to find that all the steps EA has previously outlined for reporting these EULA violations no longer work. I made a post about it on Reddit to r/TheSims and while I got plenty of likes on the post I ended up deleting it after a few hours because so many commenters were too focused on the creator I was complaining about not being "bad" compared to others out there, and calling me entitled for not wanting to wait for their CC set to release. And I get it, I'm not entitled to anybody's creations. None of us are. But it really surprised me how so many people were coming to bat for this person who was doing a wrong thing, and being upset with me who did nothing but call out that said person was doing the wrong thing. For the record this person charges $5 for their lowest Patreon tier and they have over 45,000 members.
Which brings me to now. I've been thinking about it all day and comparing the reactions from these Redditors to the reactions people had when the Login Rewards stuff started. People who are very anti micro-transaction don't seem to realize that paying for custom content is, essentially, the same thing. On the subject of entitlement, just as I'm not entitled to a creator's CC they should not be entitled to my or anybody else's money. And here are my reasons:
It goes against a policy that, intentional or not, benefits the consumer over the corporation. We don't get many "wins" like that from giant companies like EA. Everything is expensive nowadays and there are players out there who only have the base game and whatever freebie DLCs have come out, relying on CC to make their games more fun. Overly restricting CC access to these players is essentially punishing them for being poor, and that's uncool.
Unless a piece is specifically being commissioned by someone, creating custom content for The Sims 4 is not a hardship on creators. Typically when people are paid to perform a task it's a specific task someone else wants them to perform. Many CC creations are things the creator themselves decided they wanted to make regardless of whether they expected anybody else would use it.
Paying for CC is not at all a guarantee of quality or originality. I know of at least one creator (who was part of the big CC doxxing scandal a few years ago) that got caught straight-up stealing meshes from another creator, and had the audacity to charge money for what they stole. I've also seen examples here on Simblr of paid content that doesn't actually work because the maker never tested it in-game and just went by what they could see in blender.
Some creators try to circumvent the policy by hiding their stuff behind ad links, where they put users at risk of infection by malicious content from less-than-savory advertisers.
There's no transparency with CC makers. Lots of people are anti-CF right now because of where they're funneling some of their profits but for all you know, the creator you paid for that content is doing the same thing and they don't have to tell you about it. Once that money leaves your account you have no idea what it's going towards.
I do think there are ethical ways to make money off your CC. Have a reasonable Early Access period of no more than a month at most. Offer commissions. Provide piecemeal content for free and charge for the option to download in bulk. Request tips. You can still profit from your creations without barring users who cannot afford to pay for them.
And some might say "you work for a website that charges Early Access for content!" and you're right. But here's the thing: none of that is my content. The little CC I have made is and will always be free. If it were up to me they wouldn't do Early Access at all, but everything goes free in 2-3 weeks anyway.
All of this is to say that players need to stop and really think about what they're contributing to when they side with extended paywallers. They violate the EULA, often expecting payment for content nobody asked for, with no quality control or safety measures in place for the consumer. It's not unreasonable to want to profit off of a hobby but you're no better than EA by barring your shit behind a perpetual paywall or locking it for an unreasonable amount of time. I'm not entitled to the things you make and you're not entitled to get paid for making content in a proprietary file type you didn't invent for a game you didn't create. And if you think EA doing micro-transactions is bad but paywalling CC content isn't, you need to rethink what you actually support.
Lastly I want to thank the CC creators out there who release their content for free. There are many insanely talented people out there creating amazing stuff for this stupid game that they don't charge for, and a lot of it is far better quality than some of the shit people expect you to give them money to access. I love that I can share some of these creators for my job, so more players can learn about their incredible work and enhance their games at the same time. YOU are the reason the CC community is thriving and YOU are the reason they game is still going strong.

atp just add a color wheel just for hair... pls
i could care LESS about daily login rewards, in fact i think its actually the most ridiculous thing for a game like the sims.
like imagine not playing for weeks on end just to find out you missed out on 4 weeks worth of free [recolored] items from other eps for FREE??

The concept of daily log in rewards for the Sims 4 is, and I can't stress this enough, unhinged.
But. BUT! Folks have allready gotten access to the rewards in game with no mods involved.
If you have access to the gallery, user tvkel has uploaded a room with ALL of the current reward build and buy items.
What this means is, even if you don't unlock the rewards, you can have them to use in any builds you download from the gallery with no CC downloads required.
So, no need to have FOMO about these items.

oh great I go on hiatus and now is when I learn that there was a one-time login reward event thing with exclusive content. the fuck. I can't be the only one who plays the sims 4 by being obsessed with it for 48 hours and then forgetting it exists for three months, if I wanted to have to log in daily to get the game's full content I'd be playing an MMO.

“Login Events” Have Officially Begun on The Sims 4
After a major leak on Tuesday, Login Events have officially begun on The Sims 4.
Tumblr media
If you haven’t heard, players who load up the game a few times over the next few weeks will have access to new items, from objects to Create a Sim assets, including one new trait.
The Sims has shared a video tutorial on how you can claim your rewards. Watch it below, and read the blog post, which includes a FAQ section.
youtube
Events are Coming to The Sims 4
Come for the vending machine, leave with a trait
Oh hi there. I’m Font, a Senior Game Design Director on The Sims 4. I’ve been living and breathing the Sims for over a decade and have been lucky enough to contribute to The Sims 3, The Sims Mobile, and The Sims 4. I consider myself a Simmer whose day job is to come up with new and unexpected ways to play in The Sims 4. Which brings me to the topic of this development blog: the introduction of Events!
Events in The Sims 4
Events are a limited time experience, centered around a fun theme, with free rewards or gameplay that adds new opportunities to your game.
Our team created a platform for these new Events to live. Something that is flexible, easier to update, and will be easy for you to find and claim those rewards. Our designers have been busy making this new system shine and preparing for the first Event, while our artists have been creating new objects and Create-a-Sim pieces.Advertisement
The first Event will be “The Sims 4 Happy at Home Login Event,” where rewards can be claimed simply by logging in to the Main Menu for a limited time. This Event includes a suite of items that will help create a comfortable hangout space where your Sims can refine their skills with the new Practice Makes Perfect trait.
There will be updates in the future that bring additional layers to what you can see and do. The team is working on adding gameplay to Events, perhaps a quest or two to explore, and even more rewards to claim.
The team will be developing Events with objects and gameplay connected to The Sims’ Season. Events can also be timed to a variety of different occasions in a calendar year or a general theme that we look forward to sharing with you in the future.
How to Claim The Happy at Home Login Event Rewards
Each day, new game items are unlocked and ready to claim from The Sims 4 main menu.
Click the Event tile on the main menu to view the Event screen.
From the Event screen, select “claim” on any unclaimed Event rewards.
The claimed rewards will be added to Build Mode or Create-a-Sim. The team has added a new Event filter under the Special category in both Create-a-Sim and Build Mode that can help you quickly find the rewards you’ve claimed.
Each week a new set of rewards become available to view (each will unlock daily).
Any days you miss claiming your reward can be claimed at any time during the duration of the Event, and up to one week after the Event ends
Claim these rewards and add them into your game to create a stay-at-home retreat perfect to invite friends and family over to enjoy some snacks and a round of games or choose to mix and match them with other items to tell the story of your choice. Each of the objects come in a variety of color options to help fit your aesthetic.
Tumblr media
Week 1
Toss a round of sharp objects with the Bullseye Dartboard while embracing the evening in this Night Sky Layered Necklace. After a few rounds, grab a snack from the Guerdon Goods Mini Fridge. Earn a few Simoleons by tossing your trash in the matching Guerdon Goods NanoCan garbage bin, now in a less futuristic style.
Week 2
Let your tresses down with the Serenity Hairstyle and grab a seat at The Cool & Compact Bar. Whether you are practicing your mixology skills or serving up drinks for your friends, The Cool & Compact Bar offers a smaller footprint so you can save on space without compromising on quality.Advertisement
Week 3
Give your Sims bed or sofa an extra oomph of cozy vibes with The Pure Pillow clutter item and offer them a comfy backdrop to take a rest after a day of skill gain with the Practice Makes Perfect trait. With this new trait, Sims can learn skills faster, even if they are a bit slower to start.
Week 4
Dress your sims down in laidback Athleisure Wear and pull up to the functional Guerdon Goods Vending Machine to round out their snack game.
Do you have questions, we’ve got answers here in the FAQ
Are these rewards really free?
Yes, these rewards are free when you engage with the Event. Once claimed the rewards for this Event will be available in the Base Game. Each Event may handle rewards a little differently. For instance, this first Event you get rewarded for jumping back into the game while the Event is active. In the future there may be Events that take you on a quest where you’ll complete goals in order to earn rewards.Advertisement
What about SDX releases, I thought those were to provide free content and updates!
Sims Delivery Express drops aren’t going away, but we’re always looking for new and novel ways to deliver gameplay, as well as objects and clothing to add to your Sims’ lives. You can still expect SDX releases throughout the year as well as new Events to engage with The Sims 4 throughout the seasons.
What happens if I join the Event late?
There’s plenty of time during the Event to jump in if you are coming in late. Each day you launch the game counts as a login to unlock the next available reward. If you come in late to the Event there’s still time to catch up, but it will take 8 days of logins to unlock all of the rewards. We’ve provided an extra week to login and claim those remaining rewards.
The Sims 4 Happy at Home Login Event will be available beginning on May 30, 2024 on PC via EA app™, Mac® via Origin, Epic Games Store and Steam®, PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One systems.Advertisement
The Sims 4 Happy at Home Login Event requires The Sims 4 base game, available free to download with all game updates. See minimum system requirements for the pack.

Apparently Sims 4 has started up daily rewards and it's genuinely making me angry like YOU ALREADY HAVE SIMS FREEPLAY AND THE SIMS MOBILE FOR THAT, STOP TRYING TO TURN SIMS 4 INTO A MOBILE GAME ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU CAN GET WAY BETTER SHIT WITH CC/MODS ON PC
This is definitely their way of begging people to continue playing because genuinely, GENUINELY, who the fuck plays Sims 4 every day???? Most people I see playing it (and myself) go on a week long Sims 4 binge like once a year at most, that's just how people play the game, how is this gonna work??
Project Rene is gonna fucking suck. I'm sticking with Sims 3 and Paralives.

Daily Rewards - The Cheaters Guide
Not mods. With the exception of the very last tip, you should be able to use all of these options to get your free goods without needing to log into you Sims 4 game daily even on console.
Tumblr media
Daily rewards are here! I'm not thrilled. I love free items added to the game, but I'd prefer they drop in an SDX and not be tied to my remembering to log in at regular intervals. Anyway.
I don't want any of you to feel left out if are unable to log in. I want you to have access to as many of these free items as you can without using mods. Really. These items? They were all downloaded into our game with the latest patch anyway.
<---------->
The Buy Items
These are the easiest to access. You have options too!
Tumblr media
The first option works right now as of May 31st 2024. I don't know if it will be patched at some future date. This one everyone can do.
Go into build and buy mode. Filter by Special> Event Rewards and SELECT ALL colors. Make sure you also have your buy items sorted to see everything (not just selecting comfort, like I did the first time.)
Looks like the update on June 6th, 2024 made it so you cannot access these items on accident anymore. The second option still works though.
Tumblr media
Second option to acquire buy mode objects is to download a room from the gallery that has all of the objects in it. There are multiple by now. Pictured above are rooms from gallery users: HenfordHenCoop and onlyabidoang
<---------->
The Reward Trait
There are two easy options to get the reward trait as well. You can get it now, today, May 31st, 2024.
Tumblr media
The first method: have your sim achieve 5000reward points. Purchase a Re-Traiting Potion from the rewards store. The Practice Makes Perfect Trait is right there.
Looks like the update on June 6th, 2024 made it so the reward trait is no longer available this way. The second method still works though!
Tumblr media
The second method, as noted by OnlyAbiDoang on X -- you can open the cheats console and type in the cheat:
traits.equip_trait trait_PracticeMakesPerfect
<---------->
I Want Everything Right Now
You know what? If you are playing on a computer, you can have all CAS and BB objects unlocked right now. You sure can. You just have to edit your .ini file. Yes, they're keeping track of our log in rewards on our own machines. I'm telling you this to let you know that if you uninstall and then re-install your game, those rewards will no longer show up for you. Ah, but this tips shared on X means even that wont be a problem.
Tumblr media
Anadius on X shared this tweet about editing your own .ini file so you can access everything. Right now. Including the hair, the necklace, whatever. Everything from this first round of login rewards.
Have fun!
