if you peel him back far enough, there's nothing but a pile of theater masks
like, it's really fun how fontaine starts spiralling out the closer jack gets to him in the final arc of the game and returns to appropriating the image of family (the fake family in the beginning, the flawed father position later) to try and appeal to jack in some way but it's like. buddy. baby. you already took off your mask. anything you try and put on after this is going to come across as cheap and desperate. the magic is gone! and personally? I'm hooting and hollering

Asher: You hear that? Atlas: Hear what? Asher: The falls. You were right. We were just turned around; they’re over that way. We almost went in the opposite direction. Atlas: You’re… are you feeling okay? Asher: Yeah. A little sore and in desperate need of a shower, but otherwise, I’m good.
Atlas: Thank god. Asher: Are you feeling okay? Atlas: Yeah. I think so.
Asher: What’s wrong? Atlas: Did we…? Do you remember anything? Asher: Like what? Atlas: I… We… Um, y’know what, it’s nothing. Must’ve been a dream. It was just so… real. Asher: Let’s pack up and get out of here. You’ll feel better once we eat and get cleaned up. Atlas: Yeah, you’re probably right.
Atlas: Hey Ash? Asher: Yeah? Atlas: When we get married, how would you feel about me taking your name? Asher: You mean like hyphenate or?
Atlas: No, I mean, what if I just change my name to Atlas Goode? Asher: You want to do that? Atlas: Yeah, I do. The thing is, the Stephens name is the only thing left tying me to my past, and I don’t want to carry it anymore. They’re not my family. The Goodes are my family, you are my family. Asher: Oh Atlas, that’s really touching. Yes, of course, I would love that.
Asher: We better get back quick if we’re going to find somewhere to get married before we catch our flight tonight. Atlas: Are you serious? We’re really doing it today?
