3.33 Maybe There's a Reason

Today Lucy asked me to have lunch with her, but first she wants to stop by the new employee daycare on the second floor and see how her kids’ first day is going.

“It’s their first time being away from family,” she tells me as we walk towards the classroom. “Christopher and I want them to get used to being around other kids, so they’ll be coming here for a few hours a couple of days a week.”

“I’m sure it’s easier for you being close by,” I say. 

“Yeah, it’s nice being able to pop in and see them. I’m trying not to be too overbearing, though.”

Lucy opens the door to the classroom and two brown-haired toddlers make a beeline for her. They have the same face with bright blue eyes and round cheeks and Lucy has them dressed in coordinating outfits–one in blue with his hair slicked back and the other in brown with hair grazing his forehead.

She crouches down and pulls them both in for hugs. “How are my boys?”

“Mama, we missed you!” The one in brown, whose name I learn is Seth, exclaims.

“You Mama friend?” The other twin, Reese, asks me.

“No way, she has cooties!” 

Reese starts giggling. “Mama cooties, mama cooties!” he chants. Lucy picks him up. 

“This is Johnny,” she tells Reese. “He’s actually the cootie monster.” Reese giggles some more. 

“Well, if Sunny Side ever goes under at least we know we can make toddlers laugh,” I quip.

“That’s not exactly hard to do. Reese laughs every time he passes gas.”

“Same, dude, same.”

Lucy says her goodbyes to the boys and we start heading out to the food stall. 

“It seems like things are going well with the students,” Lucy tells me on the way. “Everyone seems to be fitting in well.”

“Yeah, they’re pretty cool people,” I reply.

“They’re all really nice,” Lucy affirms. “Can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“I might be reading into things too much, but things seem a little tense with you and Lexie.”

“First of all, that’s not a question,” I reply as Lucy cuts her eyes at me. “Secondly, you’re right, there has been some tension, but we’re working through it.”

“Well, whatever is going on, it doesn’t seem to have affected either of your work. I just want to check in with you and make sure everything is okay.”

I think back to my previous conversation with Lucy when she said I can talk to her if I need to. “The truth is, Lexie and I were in a relationship but we broke up last Spring,” I say.

“Wait, I thought she was a lesbian?”

“Well, that’s why we broke up.”

“Oh. Ohhh.”

“Yeah. I took it pretty hard…I dropped out of school because I couldn’t face her,” I admit. “But she’s a really great person. It’s been nice getting to know her again as a friend.”

“That’s good! Maybe there’s a reason she showed up here. Maybe it’s a sign that it’s time to move past all the hurt feelings.”

“Maybe so.”

“Oh, hey, Paul and I are planning a little camping trip in a couple of weeks and I was going to invite you and some of our coworkers along. If you’re interested, maybe you can invite Lexie. It might be a good opportunity for you two to interact outside of work without things being too awkward.”

“Yeah, sure, why not,” I tell her.

While Lucy orders her lunch, I reflect on my last camping trip with Lexie. It didn’t exactly go well, but maybe it will be different now.

Blog 002: Girl, Stop Bragging!

Tawana and I had a good 30 mintues for our lunch break. We didn't work at the same job or have similar positions, but we worked a few storefronts apart and timed our breaks for some girl time. Meeting in the city for a bite was our go-to.

She is a receptionist for an accountant, and I work as a artistic graphic designer for a small newspaper. You know doing the logos and all of that jazz? It wasn't glamorous, but it paid my rent.

Tawana went on and on about being a newlywed and mentioned her upcoming housewarming party. Eric and Tawana just moved into a brand new home. Like girl, stop bragging....I get it, you're happy.

She suggested I bring a date along and mentioned Cesar. She talked about how something casual can grow and yada-yada-yada. I guess since she has the "perfect marriage" she can't stop dishing out advice.

I'm not trying to be a hater but its becoming very insensitive and she's doing way too much.

Jordan called her back that evening after all the kids had been settled down.

“Thank you for that. He was so upset. He was trying to tell me something when she took his phone, and he’s been holding it in for three days.”

“I know,” Maria said. “I could see that on his face.” She inhaled sharply. “But Colette is gonna kill me. I wonder if she’s seen me at the hotel? I wonder if she remembers who I am?”  

“Let me worry about Colette,” he said. “It was a good idea. We told her there was a tutor at the arts center, and he used their phone to call me.” 

“Did she believe that?” 

“For now. Well, now she wants the name of some poor arts center tutor who doesn’t exist, but that should hold for a while.”

“Okay, but I’m still gonna look over my shoulder everywhere I go.”

“She won’t lay a finger on you as long as I’m alive,” he said. “You are an angel on earth. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

“Those are some big words, mister.” 

“Yeah,” he laughed, feeling shy now. But he wasn’t going to hide from that feeling. He needed her like he needed the wide world to roam in, like he needed new horizons, fresh air, open skies, like he needed his kids to believe in him, like he needed time to just stop and wait. He had to figure out a way to make it all work. “I mean it, though. I need you. Please don’t give up on me.” 

“I’m not,” she said. “I won’t.”

Kairen literally dreads waking up early and having to work at the academy under Lark who is much like a father figure to him at this point. His job at the academy is to just help other shadows like himself prepare for their roles and futures doing the dirty work under the Grimreaper now since they've crossed over however, he can't bear it…he doesn't understand why he has to lie to them when he knows himself exactly how people like him are treated. In this world shadows are considered cursed…the broken ones…the ones who never make it out and it's something that keeps him closed off to the possibility of ever having the future he thought he would. He knows of the city where shadows hide or are transported out of Ravenwood because they've gone mad…crazed..and seek other resources to cope. Kairen keeps his emotions locked up and buried because it's easier that way and hurts less for those around him knowing he might never be able to provide someone what they deserve. The only thing that seems to make his time at the academy bearable is being able to see Iris and tease her about how late she is to every scheduled class, her messy bedhead, her bratty attitude, and how short she is. He's known her since Lark brought her in one winter not giving the details of her past and how she came about and he's never bothered to cross that boundary knowing that some things are better left unsaid.

Beau: Uuhh, not sure yet.

Random Man: Might throw a small get together at my penthouse, show off some of my work.

Beau: That's so sick….

Random Guy: If you wanted to come...

Random Guy: …could make the get together….just us

Beau: You know I would love to but-

Beau: No yeah totally- I’m coming! Sorry I hear my friend calling I’ll be right back.

Kellen: That guy sounded like a fucking asshole.

Beau: Yeah what'd give you that thought.

Kellen: Dated a few, fucked a many.

Beau: Oh, I've heard.

[Kellen laughs]

Kellen: Didn't know Beau Wheatley hung out at art parties.

Beau: Didn't know Kellen Costas-Temple gave a fuck about what I did.

Kellen: Meowch…I mean I don't.

Beau: Right.

Kellen: Why? Should I?
