crozier and lady silence arrive at the numbing site of the expedition’s last camp and biggest die-off. trash piles and ash pits are scattered around and at least ten broken-down tents full of bodies stand. as crozier moves from tent to tent to count the dead, lady silence discovers a fire pit where there are bones. not fallen bones, but hacked-up bones. human bones. there are a few fire-blackened boots there with elements of meat inside them. a cook pot stands with the same grim, tallowy contents.
