thanks as always to @agirlandherquill for organising writemas, and for coming up with so many amazing prompts! today's are here if you want to play!

I wanted to do something silly and fun for the last day, so I grabbed a bunch of random characters and threw them into a room together for a party. the prompt I picked was:

"What do you mean you don't know how to dance?"

Kandrina looked around, taking in the strange surroundings. “Where are we?” There were tiny, twinkling lights strung overhead, and little clusters of tables and chairs festooned with sparkling silk bows around the edges of a polished floor.

Remlik and his twin sister Remlika stood either side of her, also puzzling over the unfamiliar location. “I have no idea. It looks as though the place is decked out for a party, though,” he said.

“This has to be Dranj-Aria’s doing. We were at home only a few moments ago,” said Remlika.

“Nothing to do with me,” came the goddess’s voice. She stepped out of a side door, green hair almost sparkling in the tiny lights scattered around the room. “I have a feeling you were all put back where you came from after this, though.” She winked into the air, not looking at anyone.

“Sister!” The excited shout startled them, and Kandrina felt someone slam into her back, enveloping her in a fierce hug. “How did you get here? Also, where is here?”

Kandrina laughed, turning to embrace Enkarini. “I don't know, and I don't know. It's good to see you, though.”

Behind her, Caiara, Ember and Soris seemed to appear out of nowhere. “Are we here for a reason, do you think?”

Soris shrugged and picked at his nails. “If we are, I'm sure someone will say so.”

Music swelled from somewhere, an upbeat, cheerful tune that none of them could name. “Come and dance with me,” Enkarini said, pulling her sister into the middle of the floor. Caiara joined them, and the three girls began a kind of spinning, clapping dance around each other.

Remlik caught sight of another couple across the room; a pale man with dark hair and a richly coloured jacket, and a red haired woman in a deep green dress. He made his way over and introduced himself. “I don’t suppose either of you know anything about this place?” he asked when they had given their names, Michael and Christina.

“Not a clue. It seems like a friendly place, at least,” Michael said. “There seems to be a feast table laid out over there, your green-haired friend has already filled a plate.”

“Maybe later. I’d rather like to dance with my partner, for now.”

Christina smiled. “That sounds good to me. Come on, Michael.”

As the rest mingled, a shout rang over the music and chatter. “What do you mean, you don’t know how to dance?” Ember had forgotten to be sarcastic in her surprise.

“I mean I don’t know how to dance! It’s not exactly something I had a need to learn about,” Soris replied.

Ember yanked him off the chair he had sat on and pulled him towards the floor. “It’s about time you start learning, then. I’ll start off slow for you.”

Remlika stood to one side, watching the dancers and debating whether to fill a plate from the seemingly endless feast. Dranj-Aria joined her, nodding in time with the beat and offering a platter of cheesy pastries. “You felt like joining in? I can throw a few shapes, if you wanted a partner.”

“Alright then. I’ve never danced with a goddess before.”

With a twirl, Dranj-Aria simultaneously led Remlika onto the dance floor and managed a bow to the invisible audience. “A very Merry Christmas to you all,” she whispered.

First messaging app: does anyone remember kik? It was the popular app when I was in high school. I had one because the Cool Kids told me I needed one and then used it maybe twice, lol.

Pickles, yes or no: yes! The electrolytes and health benefits from fermentation are so helpful for my stomach issues. I used to buy gigantic jars of the big sour dill ones to snack on.

Favorite mythical creature: oooh, this is tough. I was a big fan of alicorns and unicorns as a kid. These days, I’m into dragons, kelpies, and mermaids. I adore animals, and that includes the mythical ones.

Longest book series you've read: I read all of the books set in the House of Night world as a teen. If we include novellas and spinoffs, I think there are almost twenty? The world-building intrigued me, but I didn’t really like most of the characters. Looking back now, those books are pretty problematic.

Playstation, Xbox, or Nintendo controller layout: PC gaming is my preference, actually. Gaming in general isn’t super accessible to me as a blind person. There are accommodations to make console gaming doable, but most of them are more trouble than they’re worth.

time to get out of bed: I’m usually up by 11am at the latest on the days my chronic illnesses are being kind to me. If not, I don’t force myself out of bed at a set time. If I’m really struggling, my sleep schedule will flip and I’ll transform into a nocturnal gremlin.

Did you ever have a Tamagotchi: Someone once gave me a used one as a Christmas present. It was already dead and I didn’t know how to, or if I could, undead it. That made me really sad. My autistic brain had already gotten attached to that little pixilated guy without even meeting it.

Ugh. That stupid ringtone. She hated it, but Robin somehow put it there and she couldn't remove it.

"Hello?"

"Hey mushroom."

She scoffed.

"Don't mushroom me, wonderboy. And tell your brother to remove the stupid ringtone."

She heard a sigh at the end of the line.

"Look, I get the feeling that you're mad at me-"

"No shit, sherlock."

"-but I need to know why."

She sucked in a breath.

She loved Dick Grayson. And Dick Grayson loved her.

So why couldn't she say yes?

"Dick..." She let out a sob.

"Mushroom? You okay?"

"No, I'm not okay, dammit!"

She put the phone down, and let the tears stream down her face.

"Hey. I'm here for you, ring or no ring. Okay? You're my best friend." A pause. Then: "Don't tell Wally I said that."

She let out a dry laugh. Then, taking a slow breath, she began to explain herself.

"Dick. I...I know I promised you I would change, that I could change...but I can't. I'm starting to think that old habits can't die. I'm not like you, I'm not the hero you think I am."

There was nothing but silence on the other end of the line.

"Dick?"

"How many."

She didn't say anything.

"How many?"

"...Sixteen. Sex traffickers."

I really am starting to think about how I want to approach the sequel to Hungry for love, ready to drown, given what I feel like is a certain, um, incompleteness in the back half of s2: how much do I want to infill with things like my ideas for "episode 5.5" versus the relatively narrow approach to missing scenes that I took before?

"post-canon" - which is entirely on my TAZ Balance fics! I wrote a ton of fic exploring those characters after the end of the series, both on my own and with Ryn.

ngl, I would love to see fanart of for the benefit of all the broken hearts; I have this image in my head of the scene where they're all in the pullout overlooking the city, and Her face being shadowed so you can't see it but you can see the other three, but I am not an artist lol. and honestly I would be amazed to get any art of my work, and especially that one which is near and dear to my heart. (I did get a gift of very silly meme art but that's kind of a different thing)

1. What was the first part of your wip that you created?

I'm not sure how i'm supposed to answer but by the person who tagged me answers, I think mine is the characters but only Madhi and Noe (Dan being a random pilot with no name back in 2019)

3. Who are your favourite characters you've made? Why?

I obviously love my main characters because I've wrote about them for so long and they're just the best. For the less important mcs, my fav would be Devyn because she's a really interesting character. She's so silly but at the same time she's going to have an important role later in the serie and I'm really excited to write about it.

6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!

It's briefly mentionned once or twice but Dan and Alec have a cat, her name is Cloud because she's white/grey and looks like a cloud!

I actually made a point of avoiding you when you first washed up, especially after I heard you were going to be Archivist.  I still missed the old man and had a lot of tangled up feelings with all my good memories of the archive being tainted by sadness over his loss.  But I couldn’t avoid the place forever and I missed it as much as I did him, so I finally got my courage together and made myself go down there.

I was so nervous about how it was going to go, seeing someone else in his place, watching over our books, intruding in my place to hide from the world.  But then I got down the stairs and you looked ridiculous.  I know I should say I’m sorry for laughing like I did, but I’m still not.  I don’t mean that in a mean way though.  Seeing you there, looking nothing like him but drowning in his clothes like you were his kid that had gotten into his closet and surrounded by an utter mess was just the right kind of silly to get rid of those nerves and make me feel better about, well, a lot of things really.  I know you were embarrassed but please don’t be when you look back on that.  Under the exact context that you couldn’t have known, I don’t think you could have made a better first impression.

And I’ll admit, seeing all the books out of place and hearing they were going to be reorganized felt wrong at first.  The archive means a lot to me, and who were you to change something so important?  But then as you were talking you just got so into it.  Talking so fast you were stumbling over yourself and repeating things but smiling the whole time.  Here was someone else who really cared.  I was afraid you wouldn’t.  

As we got to talking and while I settled back into my old reading spot I started thinking maybe rearranging everything wasn’t so bad.  It was a fresh start.  A way for the archive to keep what it’s always meant to me without reminding me of what I’d lost.

From there, it wasn’t hard to start thinking of you as a fresh start.  Someone who didn’t have any prior history or associations with me to poison the present.  Someone I could do things right with.

You know I’ve drifted away from all my other old friends.  Some of the reasons I’ve told you, some I think you’ve figured out, and some you probably have an idea of now after all that other stuff I wrote.  I’ve had my problems in the past.  Still do.  But I’ve gotten better.  And I’m still getting better.

I know it was never your intention, but thank you for giving me the opportunity to try being a good friend again.  For being any kind of friend again.  I think we both know you can be alone without being lonely, just like you can be with others and still be lonely.  I was definitely the latter for a long time.  Longer than I realized, and you were my first step to getting out of that.

Sit

              Mircea walked slowly into her room and pulled a nearby chair around to sit before her. He stayed quiet a long moment until his sister laughed with some exasperation.               “What is it Mircea?” She couldn’t help but smile as he did his typical unsettling stare before he began.               “You didn’t go to the shadow district this morning.” He finally spoke, settling back into his seat.               Reena’s smile faded and she turned back to her desk, “I didn’t realize you knew about that.”

Stand

              “Why does he stand off to the side?” Reena ventured to ask, gesturing to a man dressed similarly to the apprentices who stood against the wall behind the table.               The king looked from her to the man and back. “He’s not a full apprentice. He doesn’t join the main table. He gets to eat when we finish.” He gestured to her plate which she’d only picked at so far. “Eat up.”

Walk

              As she stepped out into the sunlight, Reena’s mind returned to how it was another last for her. The last time she’d leave the palace. This wasn’t on one of her silly bread runs or a meandering walk through the city. She was leaving, giving herself as a sacrifice in hopes of keeping them safe. In hopes of seeing them fed.                 “At least they’ve got a proper carriage for you.” Mircea said quietly as they approached the gate.

Run

              The honesty she seemed to exude was as much disconcerting as it was attractive. Surely no one existed who simply said what they meant and wore it plainly on their face when they didn’t. How could someone like that be brought into Kalt to rule beside him? To run in the highest political circles…               And it was real? If she wasn’t putting on a show to lure him into a false sense of security?               He frowned.               She’d be a lamb among wolves.
