i think that a lot of the fandom mischaracterises hijacked!peeta and it low key bugs me

because he isn't a single-minded murderer or filled with bloodlust - he's terrified

like a wounded animal, he lashes out at katniss because of how much he fears her; his mind has been so utterly warped that he can't see an escape other than through violence. he's convinced she's going to torture him, so he wants to stop her

which is why i think the idea that he hurts her post-mockingjay isn't a fair assumption; by this point, he's recovered enough that he is no longer violent. even in the capitol, his final descriptive relapse shows him punishing himself before he's willing to lay a hand on katniss

while he'll obviously never fully recover, his reported periods of relapse (grabbing the back of chairs and the like) are drawn from terror, previously aimed at katniss and later at himself as he gains back functionality

he was never warped into a mutt, or stripped of his personhood, or turned into a sadist. he was just made to fear everyone and everything - primarily katniss, which then manifested as a fear of himself.

katniss in cf: peeta is doing everything he can to convince me i should be the one to make it out of the arena, but i already promised to myself this time he would be the one to survive. everyone must be trying to protect him because they can see how genuinely good of a person he is compared to the rest of us.

Isn't it funny how Katniss spends half of the first book feeling threatened by Peeta and afraid of what he'll do and talking about how strong and cunning he is and then once she starts trusting him she goes through most of the rest of the trilogy like: "Peeta's too good to hurt a fly. He needs me to protect him. He won't make it in there on his own. He's not made of the same stuff as the rest of us"

my silly headcanon is that after the war, as access to healthcare improves, katniss needs to start wearing glasses. and it really annoys her. what makes it worse is that peeta doesn't need glasses at all. he could easily work in the bakery or paint while wearing glasses, no problem, but hunting with glasses? not so easy.

I’ve been reading mockingjay and this is a summary of what I think is happening inside peeta’s head rn:

Peeta: once I manage to undoom you from the narrative the wedding is back on!

was just thinking about peeta being the coach for he and katniss’s daughter’s youth soccer team. all of her friends have only ever seen her dad as the happy-go-lucky man with the joyful laugh who bakes the best cookies for their class activities. but his daughter knows how competition makes him.

her friends are all dumbfounded when coach!Peeta comes out, and he’s hammering them with different drills and training. making twelve-year-olds run elaborate drills. making them complete sprints after each loss.

one night, their daughter crawls into her parents’ bed when her mother is in there alone relaxing and begs her to talk to him to take it easy, and katniss just laughs and says, “oh, honey, it sounds like he’s going easy on you. you wouldn’t believe what he did to me”

The way Katniss is just stumbling through the Hunger Games like "I can keep Peeta alive through sheer willpower combined with how much everyone loves him cause he's the most wholesome and perfect person in the whole universe" and Peeta is out here making these elaborate plans; i.e., "she came here with me", "if it weren't for the baby", the locket with pictures of her mom and Prim, and GALE??? Wanting to make alliances.
