Cow Pie Cake

I like to cook LOVE TO COOK. Give me a general idea of how you want something to taste and I can make it. I can make a pork tenderloin that will make your mouth water or a pesto shrimp pasta that takes you straight to Italy.

But I despise baking.

Maybe I was born without that girl gene, but there isn't a single thing about standing over a bowl of cake mix that sounds appealing to me. Well, unless I'm licking the remnants of the batter out of the bowl like a ravenous hyena.

Although, sometimes I get suckered into baking something. Last night at 11:39 pm after what could be described as the longest day ever, I remembered that I agreed to bake a birthday cake for my best friend's husband’s birthday.

Now, I didn't agree to make this cake because of my fantastic (<--- sarcasm) baking skills, but because I owed him a favor for getting me a candy bar when I thought I was going to go on a killing spree if I didn't get chocolate in my system.

His request was simple, a German Chocolate Cake. So like I good little baker, I looked on Google for a simple German Chocolate Cake Recipe. It's not simple. It's complicated. Not in the sense I don't understand the steps, but in the sense there's too many and well, ain't nobody got time for that.

So instead,  I dragged my butt over to the grocery store and bought a cake mix that supposedly had everything I needed in the box. That was lie #1.

I came home, followed all the steps on the box. Put the cake in the oven and realized there wasn't any frosting. Now, I don't like cake all that much. But I know German Chocolate Cake has frosting. I go back to the box and realize that the frosting was sold separately.

Now I have dilemma.

Lucky for me, I know a really quick recipe for a chocolate frosting. So I made an fantastic chocolate frosting and I’m waiting for my cake to come out of the oven.

This is my first time using my brand spanking new silicone bakeware, and I’ve heard nothing but good things about the stuff. I did grease the pan quickly just in case, and well old habit die hard. I pull the wobbly pan out of the oven and wait the ten minutes to let it cool… just like the box says.

I’ve watched the Food Network when they’ve used silicone bakeware, all they do is flip it upside down and they whole thing just flops out in one beautiful piece.

But not mine, half of the cake came crumbling out.

I scraped what I could out of the pan and packed it onto the demolished cake.

It’s past midnight. I’m tired. I have class tomorrow. This damn cake is the last thing I want to be working on.

So I wait as long as I possibly can to ice this devil cake.

Now this is the point where all you professional bakers, or anyone one with patience groans and rolls their eyes. You guessed it; my frosting melted right off my cake.

Needless to say, I was beyond caring at this point in time and I just gave up. I wrapped the stupid thing in plastic wrap and called it good.

The first thing my friend’s husband said to me when he saw the cake, “It looks good… but it looks like a cow pie.”

We cut it up, and while it was ugly. It was actually really tasty.

But lets just say next year he’s getting a roast for his birthday next year.
