Being the proactive advocate for my own healthcare, I covered all my bases and reached out to two different neurosurgeons for a second opinion in regards to the recommendation by my current surgeon, which is to permanently place a spinal cord stimulator in my thoracic spine to reduce pain in my lumbar fusion site.
The spinal cord stimulator is a huge deal and not a decision I felt safe or comfortable making on my own without exhausting all options, which included speaking with another surgeon in regards to the increased post operative pain.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of consulting with Dr. David Vincent with the Jordan-Young Institute. I was extremely apprehensive about seeing a new provider and having to potentially educate another professional about my disease and the manifestations that make it so complex. Dr. Vincent was kind, thorough, knowledgeable, and most importantly listened and validated all of my concerns. I felt an immediate sense of safety and was overwhelmed with excitement to move forward with his plan.
Today I received the call to schedule the “second” second opinion, and decided against it. I feel most confident that this next step is the right path and I’m ready to move forward!
Sometimes we manifest our desires and I truly believe this is one of those situations. Years ago during one of my physical therapy appointments I was in tears begging for the world of medicine to develop a minimally invasive procedure that would “pin or anchor” my pelvis to my sacrum. The joint affected in this area is the sacroiliac joint. This joint serves no purpose other than to hinge the pelvis and hips in a position that allows a woman to give birth. This joint began giving me issues during my pregnancy, and has never been the same since. It has been my number one complaint for over 10 years, however I’ve always been treated with medication and therapy, with no option for a permanent fix.
When discussing my pain with Dr. Vincent, my assumption was my fusion would essentially “fix” and/or “treat” this joint, considering I fused L4-S1, however I was wrong. I assumed my pain and discomfort was the result of the displaced cage at the L4-5 level. He did confirm that I had clear nerve pathways and the cage didn’t appear to be causing the pain described despite it being displaced 5mm. This does not take into consideration flexion/extension, side bending/twisting, inflammation, or my hypermobility. If at any point I continue to have pain at the L4-5 level, the spinal cord stimulator will potentially be the bet option for treatment in that area. The surgeon explained to me that 36% of people without pre existing SI joint dysfunction will end up with it post op a lumbar fusion, and being that I had it prior to my surgery only increases the possibility.
Hearing this validated everything. It immediately gave me a sense of relief and acceptance that the cage isn’t the culprit, and that it is in fact the SI joint. He confirmed that a spinal cord stimulator does not have as positive results to treat SI joint pain, and if my issues are in fact related directly to this joint, I won’t receive total relief and will continue to be in excruciating pain. However, the SI joint is an isolated joint that responds well to a diagnostic steroid block. He suggested that I get an injection, and if I receive 50% or more relief it is a 100% indicator that the SI joint meets criteria for a minimally invasive SI joint fusion. This is a two part surgery done 6 weeks apart, where they do one side at a time. In the last few years medicine has developed a posterior approach that decreases recovery time and allows for access to the joint without disrupting the muscles, nerves, and arteries.
I can’t even begin to express how excited I am about this procedure. I have wished and prayed for a procedure like this to exist, and had no idea that my manifestation I put into the universe years ago would finally be something available that potentially could change my quality of life. I could find frustration and anger in the fact that I’ve had to jump through hoops to get to this point and that my current surgeon did not even mention this option to me, but I refuse to! Moving forward my focus is on all things positive and I strive to continue to be my biggest advocate. The diagnostic block is scheduled for Wednesday, December 11th and I will follow up with the surgeon 2-3 weeks later. This means I will be starting the new year off with another surgery, but the most exciting and anticipated surgery I’ve had thus far.
I am so optimistic and believe 2020 is going to be an incredible year!

I am grateful for my injury.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ A year ago, I would have never imagined I’d say that. It’s certainly easier now, on the other side, to see beyond the struggle and heartache, to appreciate the lessons.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ When I surprised myself with a 9-minute half-marathon PR in the spring of 2018, I became intoxicated by the idea of getting faster. I believed I had all this speed I’d never tapped into before, and if I just worked at it, I could run a BQ. So I jumped right into an aggressive training plan filled with speed work, goal-pace runs and many more weekly miles than I’d ever run before. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I did get faster—but I was stacking block upon block to build a soaring tower with a nonexistent foundation. It’s no wonder it eventually came crashing down.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It took me a while to recognize that my injury was of my own making. And then I realized I could do it all differently and create a better outcome.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’ve spent the last year slowly moving cinder blocks into place. There’s one for strength. There’s another for stability. Another for form. And, to fill in the gaps between those: plenty of patience. Determination. Persistence. Belief.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’ve built my foundation. Every step of this marathon, I’ll run on that foundation. I have every reason to believe it will get me to the finish line feeling healthy and happy.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ And then? I’ll look forward to my next goal and start stacking my blocks: a speed workout here, a few more miles there. But not too many. Not too fast. And I’ll continue to work on all the things that will keep my foundation strong.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I wonder: How high can my tower go?⁣ ⁣ (Photo taken after my successful 20-mile run. I was tired. 😄)⁣ ⁣ #marathontraining #jackandjillmarathon #runninginjury #runningcomeback #sijointinjury #sijointdysfunction #strongernow⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz_NkZuH0D-/?igshid=1dxi3gohrwf51

Do you ever feel "Off" at your hips and back? It could be from a misalignment at your pelvis. Try this simple technique to even out your pelvis and reset your SI Joint. Yesterday’s post 6/16/20 Today was an extremely difficult day. Due to the fact that I am dealing with ulcers, acid reflux and bile reflux. Also, unable to keep almost anything down including water. Dr. Lemons the anesthesiologist said full sedation was really not an option for me. Fact is I had to be on my stomach for the surgery and even regular anesthesia was a risk due to my G.I. issues. They were concerned I may have reflux happen while under and experience aspiration. It was decided that I would have to have light sedation, better local anesthesia and position me in the inclined position would have to work. Before going back I prayed out loud that the great physician in heaven would get me through. I knew my friends and family were praying for me. Each nurse came up to me, told me they would get me through. When I arrived in the operating room the staff had piled blankets up into an incline. Everyone made sure I was in a comfortable position and reassured me that they were there for me. The medication relaxed me and put me into trance like sleep my Doctor worked on numbing me as much as possible. Needless to say I felt almost everything. I could hear and feel the chisel like thing being hit and pressure and pain moved up my back and into my thigh. Thankfully there was one nurse that never seemed to leave my side. Most of the time she held my hands through the most painful times or gave me medication in an effort to help. At one point I realized it was really my “Way Maker” sitting there, holding me as much as possible. The promise keeper was my God and he was there seeing me through my storm. I'm home now. The next couple weeks are going to be a struggle but I’ve fought these little battles one step at a time before. The only difference is I have better communication and relationship with the Heavenly Father now. The sacroiliac joints are located in the pelvis and their objective is to transfer weight and forces between the upper body and legs during activities such as walking, running and jumping. Wearing an Health compression garment during and after pregnancy creates muscle activity and therefore stability to the joint that is supported by its surrounding muscles.

I feel like a new person!!!! Despite calling out to God and Jesus Christ himself while getting my SIJ injections, my pain level has decreased by at least 2/3!!!!!
I was asked to rate my pain... which is always a loaded question for someone with widespread chronic pain. So I have to dive deep into localized pain for what I’m being seen for. Normally my pain level is 9/10 overall, and when I have a flare up, it’s more like a 15/10. Today I rated my back pain as a 9/10, and after my injections I had an immediate reduction in pain to around a 3!
It was difficult for my brain to even process pain that low in that area. I can’t even tell you the last time I felt little to no pain in my SI joints. I have injection pain, but that’s not the same and nothing compared to the average pain I feel.
I am over the moon HAPPY! I met criteria for a positive diagnostic block! This means two things! If I can hold onto the steroids for a good amount of time with relief I’ll prolong surgery... or if I burn through them quickly I’ll get the SI joints fused. Either way it’s a WIN WIN! Super excited!
I’ve been wanting this for nearly ten years and I deserve it DAMMIT! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

1. Got my SI belt from @ottobockus_ca at @hangernews today, and got fitted for new custom orthotics!
2. My @alignmed Spinal Q vest then goes over it, and my orthoticist helped me play with the angles of the straps to get a feel for different ways they can feel. It's hot as heck these days, but honestly it's not as hot as I expected, not only do I love all this supportive exoskeleton as an EDSer, but also as an #autistic, I love all the compression feels too!

I call this the "hip slide". It's a combination of movements that target the #adductors and #abductors. @docjenfit posted a tutorial and of course I added the #movementpatterns #sportyoga adjustments! Whether you have a tight groin and weak glute medius or weak groin and tight glute medius this #yogapose can address and help to correct it and allow your hips to operate equally and #Realign your pelvis. 1️⃣Step back to Split Squat 2️⃣Keep your knees inline with hips, ankles in line with knees, toes forward. Watch for knees rolling out/ in and toes pointing out/in. I have #sijointdysfunction and I have to be on task always with my alignment otherwise I am strengthening and stretching in misalignment! 3️⃣Slide hips to right and hold for 2 seconds THEN slide to the left. Everything we do has an opposing movement and we have to perform that movement to balance our bodies! 4️⃣The prescription for this is 1/10 each side. #yogafit #yogatherapy #yogaeverydamnday #stretchandstrengthen #strengthandconditioning #aclrecovery #traindirtyeatclean #trainer #injuryprevention #move2improve #goals #injuryfree #sportsperformance #painfree #backpain #hipopeners #movementcorrection #performbetter #legworkout #gluteworkout #fitgirl #getfit #getfast @hcooney_3 @marlowweee @maddiecooney @erikzine_09_34_10
