Note
Hey the fish is “sailfin blenny” is actually a Gulf signal Blenny, who is not actively kept in saltwater aquarium hobby due to being a cold water fish (relatively cold water) (I do not mean this in a rude way, just an informative way)
Thank you for letting me know! I appreciate it ^^ I have changed the picture of the fish.

Halin (blue) and Acanthos (grey) sketches. (Rambling under the cut)
Halin is based off of the Gulf signal blenny (Emblemaria hypacanthus).
Acanthos (named before I learned the species name for signal blennies, its just a very weird coincidence*) is a blacktip reef shark. He’s a guard so I wanted to go with the stereotypical “shark” character, but whenever I see reef sharks in videos they seem to be patrolling areas and just the vibes they have reminded me of Acanthos. Also they’re not fond of people and difficult to approach which is 100% Acanthos lol.
That’s a roughskin trunkfish in the top image. This project is a great way to indulge my fascination in semi-obscure marine fauna apparently...
*I frequently name characters after mash-ups of Latin species names. Some of my favourite shark-derived names are in a story about medieval ghost hunting knights that I’m 100,000 words into but took a break from writing over the past 6 months (to write another novel, obviously, which is about modern paranormal hunters but the “ghosts” are entities from another universe). Halin’s name is completely random though lol, I have no idea where that came from. “Lasio” is from an anglerfish and “Rhinco” is derived from a family of sharks.

I love this tweet because those fish are trying to beat the ever-loving shit out of each other, or at the very least trying to determine which one of them is the more dominant fish.
Tumblr media
(ID in alt: A screenshot of a tweet reading “this is how I would kiss my fish wife if I was a fish and married”. This is posted above a photograph of two white fish pressing their mouths together on a blue background. End ID.)
The fish in the image are leucistic Helostoma temminckii, the kissing gourami. This 'kissing' behavior is generally understood to be an aggressive or agonistic behavior, depending on the analysis; basically, either a legitimate fight or a ritualized fight.
Mouth-to-mouth contact is not usually a sweet/kind/fluffy behavioral signal in fish.
Many cichlids also have a known behavioral pattern that looks like kissing; the two fish lock mouths and bite each other with flared fins, before the fight breaks off with the loser fleeing. (Sometimes the fight escalates, but a jawlock or mouth battle is usually only seen in the most pitched of cichlid combat.)
Sarcastic fringeheads (Neoclinus blanchardi) are another fish worth mentioning in a page on mouth-to-mouth combat or agonistic display in fish. A blenny that lives in various tubes, the sarcastic fringehead displays its frankly enormous mouth during territorial disputes with other fringeheads, with the pair first displaying mouth sizes. If that doesn't settle the dispute, the fish escalate to pressing the upper jaw against the other fish's mouth and pushing at each other; whoever has the bigger mouth and the greater endurance tends to win, and chases off the loser.
Tumblr media
(ID in alt: A picture of two sarcastic fringehead fish fighting; they are long fish with large, triangular mouths in blue and green. Photo by Richard Herrmann. End ID.)
But yeah, if there is a picture or video of two fish in mouth-to-mouth contact? Especially if they're pushing back and forth at each other. It's probably not because they're displaying a pair bond, and they're probably not showing what a mammal would recognize as affection; they're almost certainly trying to determine who's the bigger/more dominant animal.

The Gulf signal blenny (Emblemaria hypacanthus) is a species of chaenopsid blenny known from the Gulf of California, in the eastern central Pacific ocean. It can reach a maximum length of 5 centimetres (2.0 in). This species feeds primarily on zooplankton. The blennioid family Chaenopsidae includes the pike-blennies, tube-blennies, and flagblennies, all percomorph marine fish in the order Blenniiformes. The family is strictly tropical, ranging from North to South America.

another mermaid melody AU involves the dark lovers gang, in which Izuru is the 'man behind the man' for Gaito and basically adopted him and the others (including sara) due to her strong hatred of humans. izuru is an exhausted mom of her seven dumbass kids.
YESSSSSS
OK OK OK so we are going off the rails here but I love this idea (and now I want to write a oneshot 😂😅) bare with me!
Staring off with, Izuru is not a fish-turned-mermaid I think instead I want her to be some sort of sea creature like Madam Taki and Auri. 🤔 I’m thinking due to the way her fin looks that she is a gulf signal blenny fish! I know she was created from a specific fish but I can’t remember what it is and I couldn’t find it on the wiki so…
I think that Izuru is from the eastern central Pacific Ocean (where the new fish I’m basing her on is located). Now I think that Izuru is probably in her twenties when she finds Sara (who I’m gonna assume is in her teens when she meets Taro?) so I think she’d be more of an older sister figure to her.
As for Gaito, I mention this in my fic, but I hate the whole twin thing. It doesn’t make any sense since Gaito is made to appear to be older than Kaito who is a teenager. So I’m thinking that he’s around seven when Izuru finds him (probably shortly before or after the whole wiping out of the Panthasala clan) and she is mother. Anyone who says otherwise will be by watery sea dragons.
She tries to find Gaito’s brother but become furious when she discovers that Aqua Regina gave him to humans. Her son is unconsolable and she wants to take him from the humans but surprisingly it’s Sara who stops her. She asserts that it would more traumatic to take him from them than for him to live with them.
Izuru relents but this only makes her hatred for humans grow.
As for Eriru, I think she’s the next one she picks up. I think that she finds Eriru caught in some fish nets and after that she kinda just stuck around. Izuru had a habit of finding children that are in desperate need of some guidance and in Eriru case, I think she’s the Dory of the group. I think Eiriu is going to be Leopard catshark sea creature in this AU (because of her ears and cat-like nature)
Maria is a sea angel (Clione limacina) that Izuru sound had run away from her home in colder region of the North Atlantic Ocean. Maria wasn’t receptive to Izuru and her mothering nature at first, or her brood of rambunctious children but she grew fond of them. She and Izuru bond over their control over waves and sea monsters.
Yuri is the one one she finds as a baby. She is a Deep Red Jellyfish that was separated from her pod by the ocean currents shortly after she was born. It’s actually Sara who finds her and insists that they take her in. Izuru is smitten with this little jelly and so are the rest of the them, as the baby of the group she is doted upon by her siblings.
And finally the Black Beauty Sisters, whom I am going to make anglerfish, specifically the Bufoceratias wedli. They have two anglers with two lures on its back, isn’t that neat? I think it fits their whole microphone tail thing they have going on. Anywho, I think these two come in last as teenagers when the family is well established (Sara and Gaito are adults, Maria and Eriru are teenagers, and Yuri is a tween). They’re looking to form a sea band (lol) because they’re teenagers (I’m thinking SheShe is 16 and Mimi is 13) and of course Maria and Eriru would be on board. And in true little sister fashion Yuri would want to join. And then before SheShe and Mimi know it they’re a part of Izuru’s little family.

Bonus under the cut! Because this got out of hand quick lol!
Starting with Mikeru, I’m swapping him out from being an ancient clone to being half sea creature half panthasala. His mother was a panthasala woman and his father was a flying fish sea creature. So he’ll still have winds but they’re more ray-like than angel.
Next is Lady Bat, who instead of a being made of a bunch of bats, they’re a bat fish sea creature. They got kicked out by their family (because I headcanon Lady Bat as being non-binary) and Michel takes them in and never looks back. That is his child and no one will say otherwise.

The next one is lanhua, whom he took from an aquarium. She was unhappy with her life and well how was Michel to allow her to suffer? As for Alala, she is a rosy-scales fairy-wrasse that just kinda showed up one day and Micheal was like 🤷‍♂️ ur my child now lol

In celebration of Earth Day 2021, Apple TV+ will debut “The Year Earth Changed,” an original documentary special narrated by Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning broadcaster David Attenborough, along with the second seasons of documentary series “Tiny World” and “Earth At Night In Color.” Set to premiere globally in more than 100 countries on April 16, 2021, each of these groundbreaking originals will captivate and inspire viewers to herald Earth Day, the world’s largest annual environmental movement.
“During this most difficult year, many people have reappraised the value and beauty of the natural world and taken great comfort from it,” said Attenborough. “But the lockdown also created a unique experiment that has thrown light on the impact we have on the natural world. The stories of how wildlife responded have shown that making even small changes to what we do can make a big difference.”
Showcasing exclusive footage from around the world after an unprecedented year, “The Year Earth Changed” is a timely documentary special that takes a fresh new approach to the global lockdown and the uplifting stories that have come out of it. From hearing birdsong in deserted cities, to witnessing whales communicating in new ways, to encountering capybaras in South American suburbs, people all over the world have had the chance to engage with nature like never before. In the one-hour special, viewers will witness how changes in human behaviour — reducing cruise ship traffic, closing beaches a few days a year, identifying more harmonious ways for humans and wildlife to coexist — can have a profound impact on nature. The documentary, narrated by David Attenborough, is a love letter to planet Earth, highlighting the ways nature bouncing back can give us hope for the future. “The Year Earth Changed” is produced by BBC Studios Natural History Unit, directed by Tom Beard, and executive produced by Mike Gunton and Alice Keens-Soper.
Returning for season two, “Tiny World,” narrated and executive produced by Paul Rudd (“Ant-Man”), grants viewers a unique perspective into the natural world, illuminating the ingenuity and resilience of the planet’s smallest creatures. With over 200 species filmed and 3,160 hours of footage, the six-episode docuseries shares surprising stories and spectacular cinematography that spotlight small creatures and the extraordinary things they do to survive. Captured on film for the first time are anemone shrimp, which clap to signal their intent as cleaners of predatory fish; the “biting” behaviour of fang blenny fish, filmed in slow-motion with unprecedented use of phantom high-speed cameras; and Etruscan shrews, known to be the hungriest mammals on earth. “Tiny World” is produced by Plimsoll Productions and is executive produced by Tom Hugh Jones, who also serves as writer with David Fowler. Grant Mansfield and Martha Holmes also serve as executive producers on behalf of Plimsoll Productions.
Tumblr media
The groundbreaking original series “Earth At Night In Color” also returns for a second season with six all-new episodes narrated by Tom Hiddleston (“Avengers”). With the use of cutting-edge cameras and a revolutionary post-production process, “Earth At Night In Color” presents nature’s nocturnal wonders with striking new clarity. Some never-before-seen behaviours of animals after dark, captured using low-light cameras and light from a full moon, include elephants battling hyenas around starlit waterholes and kangaroos embracing under the cover of darkness to find a mate. Other animals in the new season include pumas, polar bears, manta rays, and tiny planktonic life at night in the ocean. “Earth At Night In Color” is produced by Offspring Films. The series is executive produced by Alex Williamson and series produced by Sam Hodgson.
Tumblr media
“Tiny World” and “Earth At Night In Color” will be featured in a special Earth Day room on Apple TV+, showcasing a curated collection of content that embraces the theme of preserving the planet. Also included are the Cinema for Peace International Green Film Award-winning movie “The Elephant Queen” and “Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth,” which debuted last year on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The animated short film, based on the best-selling children’s book by Oliver Jeffers, is narrated by Meryl Streep. Jacob Tremblay stars as a precocious 7-year-old who, on the eve of Earth Day, learns about the wonders of the planet from his parents (Chris O’Dowd, Ruth Negga) and a mysterious exhibit at the aptly named Museum of Everything.

Turtles can do many things with their flippers - including chastise! Reposted from @maestro320 - "Spank You!" - 🔵Maestro's Notes: Even seaturtles get a little smack for misbehaving. Thats what this juvenile green seaturtle got for that little nip on the flipper of the older turtle as shown in this amazing footage filmed on location off Lady Elliot Island, Australia courtesy of Marine Biologist, Passionate Marine Conservationist, Underwater Photographer and Videographer, Good Friend, Jacinta Shackleton @jacintashackleton - That’s what you get for being a naughty turtle😂🐢 This green sea turtle wasn’t in the mood for games while visiting the local day spa (cleaning station) where fish aggregate to pick off algae and parasites. This area is visited by hundreds of turtles daily which can snap the coral off and even use it as a scratching post hence the way this area looks!🛁🚿 • A cleaning station is a location where aquatic life congregate to be cleaned by smaller creatures. Such stations exist in both freshwater and marine environments, and are used by animals including fish, sea turtles and hippos. The cleaning process includes the removal of parasites from the animal's body (both externally and internally), and is performed by various smaller animals including cleaner shrimp and numerous species of cleaner fish, especially wrasses and gobies (Elacatinusspp.). When the animal approaches a cleaning station, it will open its mouth wide or position its body in such a way as to signal that it needs cleaning. The cleaner fish will then remove and eat the parasites from the skin, even swimming into the mouth and gills of any fish being cleaned. This is a form of cleaning symbiosis. Cleaning stations may be associated with coral reefs, located either on top of a coral head or in a slot between two outcroppings. Other cleaning stations may be located under large clumps of floating seaweed or at an accepted point in a river or lagoon. Some species of combtooth blenny, most notably the false cleanerfish, mimic the appearance and behaviour of cleaners, then tear away scales or flesh when suitably close to the victim. - #regrann #turtles #parenting https://www.instagram.com/p/BxGFH2nA_w8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=12f083nmspvit
