Fall Colors just north of Mammoth Lakes - Silver Lake 🍂 Eastern Sierra Mountains. This one morning was so good, you can literally see all the fish waking up and plying right in front of your eyes. If you zoom in you can see some of them or at least these 2 big ones. I just loved it there, the mountains, the lake and everything about this place is heavenly. Had my first flight lesson today (finally!). I've wanted to learn to fly for over a decade and this was the first step. Holy cow...I've done some exhilarating things before but this tops it all. I almost cried with sheer joy and excitement flying by myself (with a killer instructor who did take off/landings and talked me through EVERYTHING). 🛩️ I flew over #folsomprison and #folsomlake & saw the snowy #sierramountains from 4k feet and practiced turning on a runway. . I'm literally going to be unbearable to be around for a while because this is all I wanna do now. Day 9 on the JMT and we hiked about 13 miles just short of Selden Pass. This was the first of 4 days of rain and while we enjoyed the first day, the ongoing rain would end up testing my resolve in more ways than one. However, for today, we enjoyed it as we climbed up the valley just below the Pass. I am often energized by rain and as we climbed I felt that I could have walked all the way to our last resupply at Muir Trail ranch, 7 more miles from where we ultimately stopped. Rain in the high Sierras is almost always cold and coupled with hail as it intensifies. Thunder and lightning always lurk nearby and while that can be exciting as you walk through shivering woods and over angry passes, the storms of the Sierra require deep respect and consideration. We climbed up the gentle pass, barely noticing the incline, and admired Bear Creek as it rushed nearby over rectangular, white boulders covered in technicolor lichen and through bent, ridged conifers. The Creek glowed green and sang a thrush song. The higher we climbed the more the storm sang in the distance. The clouds glowed a grey orange and the nearby mountain peaks stood solemnly against the storm. This was an odd storm in that we somehow heard it more than we experienced it. I suspected that it was surfing parallel to the pass rather than perpendicular and so we luckily missed the worst of its fervour. It presented itself to us as more bark than bite and as we crested below the pass at Marie Lakes we began to see blue sky and hooted and hollered in excitement. Marie Lakes dotted itself across the landscape making a series of islands and small pools that reflected the sky above. As we set up camp a rainbow landed in a high mountain valley across from us - a small sign from the Sierras to preserve. We often received a number of these signs from the Sierras.
