The biggest mystery of FT to me will always be how tf Siegrain got inside the Council. Oh, yeah, random teenager whose """""twin brother""""" is a known criminal, we will give you the highest position of power in this country. Nothing in this situation sounds at all suspicious. What connections does Ultear have.

YIPPIE YIPPIE i'm very thankful for your insight!!!
for me it does seem like he allows himself to be emotional (c'mon, it's natsu we are talking about, the moment he does not wear his heart in his sleeve is a great worry for the whole world) but it's more like he either doesn't question them (beyond obvious "he/she/it/they hurt my friends") OR does not allow himself to question it.
we know for the fact that igneel's disappearance took a huge toll on him, and when he joined fairy tail he stayed alone for the most part, even isolated i must say. i mean, being ridiculed for saying your parent is a dragon, for not being able to read missions, only lisanna made him feel welcome, really. and then lisanna died, and the only person left in the guild he was really connected to was happy!
(it could also be a reason for his fierce protectiveness of guild and his team and lucy, protecting every bit of companionship that he has by the skin of his teeth, because he was starved of it-)
as probable as it is for him to not realise the weight of his emotions, there is also a strong possibility that he consciously stops himself from realising them. because, if he actually took a dig at them, well, i'm afraid he would downright spiral! and thats a big no-no! we can't have ourselves being incapacitated and doubting (and actually depressed)! how then will manage to protect what's important for us! There Is No War At Ba Sing Se!
and oh boy, as you said, stack at it our unresolved identity crisis!
i've said it somewhere before, but we really lack any sort of arc that challenges natsu's character, like:
- we have galuna island for gray, where he is met head on with guilt over the fact that he was the cause of ur's untimely death.
- we have phantom lord arc for lucy, where she is battling her own guilt for bringing trouble to guild and feeling of inadequacy, that she later conquered by meeting her father face to face!
- we have tower of heaven for erza, with her survivor's guilt AND savior complex in regards to jellal.
- we have nirvana arc for wendy, where she learns that she can not only stay on sidelines, but also stand up for herself and fight!
- we have edolas arc for happy and carla, for fuck's sake! with the history of their own race and their conflicting feelings over it!
and what does natsu have? what arc can we call as his arc? where is his retrospection?
we had all of this for team natsu in a span of 100 episodes, and nothing like that for natsu to the 328 episode of Fairy Tail, and from 1 to the 170 chapter of Fairy Tail 100yq! isn't that insane? no wonder no one takes him seriously!
...uh, i realised i went off on a tangent here, oops. i hope you don't mind, really glad that you responded!
hi hi! i'm v-mo, the one behind "natsu's smart moments" posts! i've seen some of your posts and i enjoy them!!! and also you liked some of mine, so i wondered, do you have any thoughts on them? maybe there is some things i missed, or you have some advice to me?🥺🥺🥺
i'm just a little anxious about posting in fairy tail fandom, i haven't interacted with it for a very, VERY long time
so, yeah!
hope you have a good morning/day/evening/night!!
Hi!!! Gosh I’m so flattered you’re coming to me for evaluation🥹 Even if I’m 100% sure you’re covering more than I could even think of (I do however find it hilarious that team Natsu is just a herd of sheep that Natsu tries to keep from sacrificing themselves) (laughed very hard at that lol)
Lisanna was supposed to die and not come back, so her being beaten down to the bone is, just as you say, unlikely that she survived without problems. I live her but the animation team was foul for making Mashima brig her back to life
(That’s not about Natsu being smart, I realise, but you’ve covered that so well that I just read and nod along) (and I see now that you mentioned it in the tags😭 sorry I’m not the sharpest knife in the box)
Natsu is a very active person in general, so anything that gets him moving, is stuff that gets his brain into motion too. Fighting someone and using smell, sound, touch, experimenting with eating etherion (crystallised magic) and diving head first into things, gets him going.
A lot of people (me included) take the fact that he isn’t very analytical when it comes to emotions, and grab the “dumb” marker and starts putting it all over him. But even when he isn’t analytical, he still notices and cares for other people’s emotions. The fact that he’s rowdy, easygoing and has a bright demeanour shouldn’t result in getting called emotionally constipated.
He is emotionally constipated, but not for those reasons (his unresolved identity crisis however, howdy!)
Anyways I hope this sufficed as some insight! Natsu is such a complicated character to me bc it’s so hard to clock his intelligence. He CAN be smart and mindful and caring, but it’s like he has a block on himself that catches himself before he confronts his own feelings about it. Classic case of Emotion Bad But Anger Not Emotion ☝🏼🤠
#fairy tail#ft#natsu dragneel#wow how much of a difference 8 years of life can make on your perception of a character#the natsu spiralling is me coming from the fact that he is family to zeref#who has#like#made his career out of spiralling#and yeah all arc have some focus points on natsu#they are rather spread out#but none of the arcs really focus on him#thats a real shame#tartaros arc could've been it if it had the guts#zeref arc could've been it if it had the balls#100yq could've been it if it had the will#(c'mon we had laxus' final rejection of his father's legacy and jellal's backstory of being siegrain#WHY NOT NATSU-)#ahem#sorry

I had a discussion with a friend on twitter about the fact –and consequences– of Sting killing the previous Sabertooth master, Jienma and possibly more people and I feel like throwing my two cents here and expanding a bit more. Long post ahead ✌🏽
First of all, I want to make clear that my opinion on the Magic Council is that they're soo stupidly incompetent throughout the manga, so much that it shouldn't come to anyone's surprise they did nothing to Sting after killing Jienma, like they had "criminals" doing their job at one point, c'mon.
With that out of the way let's being: I'm aware of what I just said about the council, but taking in the context of where and when it took place I don't think they genuinely could do much lmao.
Firstly, the only time I remember them actually doing their job decently was during Oracion Seis, the times before and after that they were more or less there just to add the comedic bit of "Shit, we destroyed another town and the council's here, let's scram." And like, whatever the fuck they were doing during Tower of Heaven –this itself could be on another analysis post, did they seriously never doubted Siegrain?? did they just buy his lame story of "Oh yeah my twin brother who did a massacre when he was 7 is still out there making a cult or something but I got nothing to do with it don't worry about it, also don't pay attention to that it's not important rn" ???– But that was more the 10 Magic Saints and not the council I guess? but also they're the rulers of the magic council so we're on the same boat. I also just remembered the fact that sometimes they do fake trials to appease the population with no actual punishments being ruled lmao, I swear I was trying to be impartial here but it's getting harder the more stuff I remember.
Anyways, back to the GMG: They were a mess, like literally within the context. The king himself was operating illegally under the radar for 7 years and I can only imagine the Council's reaction to that fact literally moments prior to seven fucking dragons appearing out of nowhere. (The fact that the king and princess were left with just a scolding from Mest by all this was wild, truly up to the medieval(? times FT is set up in, –also keeps proving my opinion right– and raises many fucking questions about what the monarchy in this country is doing????) So, in summary, I don't think they had time to care about Sting killing Jienma. ☠️
But if you want my longer analysis (this is rhetorical I'm doing it anyways.) Consider the history of Sabertooth, whatever methods Jienma (and Minerva) had of moving the guild forwards definitely included doing not so legal stuff swept under the rug, I'm guessing by Minerva or Jienma himself. I'm taking guesses here but it could've been by bribing the Council –given how gullible they are apparently ☠️– or the Council either being intimidated enough by Jienma or because the guild tangled with the legality of the magic world so well they couldn't really do/say much to the guild during those years Jienma was in charge.
That probably helped Sting in this case, we don't know if the Sabertooth members were aware of such methods or if they had a general idea, I could assume Sting only found the full of it when he became master and had full access to the guild's records. But honestly I don't think it's farfetched to think anyone in Saber has killed people under Jienma's command more than once, since Sabertooth was introduced as a direct opposite of what Fairy Tail stands for –value your comrades as family, vow to kill no one– I think it was set to be assumed.
Maybe not ordered in ways such as "Kill this guy." but since the motto of Sabertooth was to be the better than any guild through whatever means necessary, it's not unlikely they were ordered to "dispose" of the competence more than once, as the first scene in which Sting and Rogue are introduced is literally them massacring a Dark Guild and leaving (I'm assuming) only one guy alive.

Another part of the discussion we had was what would Fairy Tail's opinion on the fact that Sting killed the previous master be and honestly? I don't think they gave a fuck.
Throughout the GMG, Sabertooth did many things to the FT members that deserve no mercy and we saw that, how each of them reaped what they sowed. Even Natsu, to no one's surprised railed the Guild's motel just to shit talk and beat the crap out of the master for humiliating Yukino.
But then, (and pardon me if I overindulge here, because this is genuinely my favorite part of the arc) the finals arrive, every single member of Saber is defeated and given retribution and only Sting is left against Fairy Tail.
And he breaks down. All of the years worth of pressure and forcibly internalized overconfidence he had to learn in Sabertooth in order to survive, destroyed in a mere week. How do you take on all that? He was 19 at that time, as self-sufficient he was he was still a kid, a kid in a most definitely not healthy environment to grow up in. –Assuming, since the manga said Sabertooth became a top guild 5 years prior after their most powerful mages joined, meaning he'd have been 14 when he joined Saber– Sting had no way of knowing how to deal with loss of such shape, so he broke down in front of his enemies, and all that pilled-up pressure fell on him.
But of course as I mentioned, Sabertooth is a guild created to parallel everything Fairy Tail stands for, and that wouldn't be the first nor the last time they help someone from outside their guild, including former enemies. I specially adore how it was Erza who consoled him, Natsu was probably the first who realized the members of Sabertooth were molded to stain their hands in the name of the guild because of Jienma, and Erza likely realized too in that moment.
And we all know Sting strives to be like Natsu but I think Erza offering him solace in this moment was core to his growth later on, she was probably the first person other than Rogue and his father who was kind to him, –since he doesn't remember Anna yet– and it was the helping hand he needed to take the first step forwards after losing everything you've ever known.
Sorry I did say I was going to overindulge lol but I love this scene so much. But back to the original question, yes Fairy Tail values their vows passionately and fiercely and yet they also rebel against them a few times, –the recurring theme of young people breaking the outdated norm is also a constant in the manga– so I think, after learning the whole story they sort of decided to forgive and adopt/mentor the members of Sabertooth and mend all the trauma they had to deal with. I love the tiny bits we see of FT members being sort of overprotective towards Saber members, they're cute.
Sooo after all that the conclusion is: yeah, Sting has probably killed people, and Fairy Tail doesn't give a damn about it 👍🏼
(I'm seriously this close to make another long post on Sting's growth in character because he makes me sick I love him so much)

i really like your meta/read-through posts and have a slightly odd question - i know the art style kinda devolves into same face/body type for most characters eventually, but before that, who do you think are meant to be the most objectively attractive characters in-universe, male and female? i'd like to track this as a reference for generating my own headcanons/etc, but after a point in the story all the guys have six-pack abs and all the ladies are generically cute and busty so... your thoughts?
Hmmm... honestly, it's a half-half on whether FT characters are canonically attractive or just attractive in Lucy's eyes. Let's go with somewhere down the middle of that. I'd say any girl that's made an appearance in canon Sorcerer spreads is considered canonically super attractive. I'd put a hold on putting guys on similar ranks though, since boys seem to be more based on strength. I'm currently memory blanking on everything from Alvarez onwards so don't mind me not mentioning them.
Note that I'm not caring for the harvest festival in fantasia, that was a real life popularity poll and thus has no standing in canon popularity.
For the girls: Top on the list are definitely Erza and Mirajane! They're pretty much specifically known for being drop-dead gorgeous who can kill you also. I'd put the mainliners of Mermaid Heel here, with Jenny Realight and Karen Lilica. Aries and Aquarius are also always mentioned for their beauty. Cana should be around here as well. Also Minerva. It feels weird to put Wendy and Chelia here, but they're canonically absolutely the cutest little angels in the world, so they fit on this scale in their own way. Human Carla too. And Ultear! Almost forgot Ultear. ALMOST FORGOT NIRVANA ARC SHERRY
Girls that are canonically considered 'upper to mid' or to whoever's tastes: Lucy, Bisca, Levy, Juvia? Not sure about Juvia, I feel she's complimented for both her strength and sometimes her appearance, but mostly it's just Lyon for the latter? Kinana! Virgo! I wanted to put Evergreen up top, but now that I think about it, maybe it's because of her ego, but she's never truly made out to be as attractive as she thinks she is. She's gorgeous to me, but everyone canonically just goes 'yeah, yeah' to her and she is always immediately shot down by being compared to Erza.
For the boys: The Trimens, Loke, and Jellal/Siegrain to cross off the obvious ones. They were all on Lucy's hotties list. Lyon. Freed. Gray if he has his clothes on.
For the boys, it's a bit harder to gauge. Cause for the boys, sometimes they're just hailed for being strong and buff, which means we go into some other attractiveness category. Elfman and Natsu are on this end, but they'd never cross over into the ranking with the Trimens-- but then again, Laxus and Gray could be in both! So, it's complicated. And Jason is enthusiastic about both of them so yeah. Also, while the girls are attractive no matter what, the boys always have a 'but' to them that drags them down on the scale. Loke's a womanizer, so Lucy is turned off. Gray's cool, but where are his clothes? etc.
Also, while most of our girls are on a canon attractive scale of some sort, most of our boys seem to be on a canon unattractive scale. Yes this is because Mashima and I think that's kinda funny

HEADCANON.
THE TRIALS OF CRIME SORCIÈRE - AFTERMATH. - - - - This headcanon is HEAVILY DEPENDANT on @sensoriella's post-pardon canon divergence ; you can find the post HERE.
After the members of Crime Sorcière were granted a conditional pardon, and the guild was dissolved - Jellal started the mandatory Reintegration Program he and his partners had to undergo to eventually rejoin society as free individuals.
Jellal's probationary period was spent under the watchful eye of Neuvillette, an ex-judge for the Magic Council who chose the life of a mage after retiring. Neuvillette being a member of Lamia Scale, Jellal had to move to Margaret Town for the following months.
NOTE : Neuvillette and Jellal had crossed paths a few times before. Many of those when "Siegrain" was a council member - but the last was at Jellal's own trial, in X784, at which the former was the judge.
.
- - - - - - - 01. JELLAL'S FIRST APARTMENT
Jellal finds himself a place to live. Simply put - he doesn't have a choice. His first instinct had been to set camp on the outskirts of town - as he had always done during the last decade. Very quickly, however, he'd been told that no, that simply would NOT do ( and for very logical reasons at that ) - and thus he had to settle in a room at Viper Inn and start the hunt for what would become his new "home".
When Jellal moved in, it was into a very small place - a studio apartment, 150 square ft, with a singular window - one of the cheapest option ( a window being the only thing he'd insisted upon ). It was small, yes, but he'd been living in a tent for so long, it almost felt too large to him.
Especially with the lack of furniture in his possession. In fact, when he moved in, it was with his sleeping bag and three cardboard boxes stocked neatly into a pile - ( one being full of trial-related paperwork, of an absurd amount he hadn't seen since his Council days ). Shortly after, he brought in a portable stove, to simulate the heat & familiarity of the campfire that his aching heart was missing.
( he felt a bit silly, knew he was being silly - but he was homesick. not for a place, but for the starry night sky, the sound of the woods, the bright light of the flames, and for the yells, grunts & laughter of people he hadn't expected to miss so damn much. ) ( This apartment was small, yet it was too large. Too cold. Too empty in a way that could never be filled. ) ( He felt like a stranger, an outsider, out of place. )
On his wall, just above his sleeping bag - a splash of color against the lifeless white paint - he hung three pictures ; two of his guildmates, and one of his oldest friend.
. . . And then, Mary happened.
