Saturday, December 7th- Grand Ballroom- Fairmont Hotel- Pittsburgh
Sidney found Evie near the rear bar in the festively decorated ballroom space. She spoked animatedly to Kelsey Rust. He approached her and whispered in her ear, âItâs time.â She turned to him with a smile. He grabbed her hand and squeezed it while she said her goodbye. Together, they walked quickly to the stage where the party band was finishing up their song, âMarry Youâ by Bruno Mars. Bruno Mars - Marry You (Official Lyric Video)
The lead singer got the crowd's attention and spoke into the microphone, âLetâs give it up for guests of honor- Sidney and Evie.âÂ
Sidney, dressed in his tuxedo, led Evie, who wore a short white sparkly dress, onto the stage. The singer handed Sidney the microphone with a flourish. Sidney wrapped his arm around Evieâs waist and brought the microphone to his mouth.Â
âGood evening everyone!â he started as the crowd cheered and Evie grinned.Â
âEvie and I want to welcome you to our engagement party. It means so much to each of us that would take the time to come celebrate our love and romance,â he continued before he turned to Evie. âEvie, I was just thinking about the words to that song. He sang joyfully, 'Cause it's a beautiful night, we're looking for something dumb to do. Hey baby, I think I wanna marry youâ. What do you say? How about we get married tonight?â
The crowd erupted in cheers when Evie took the microphone and said, âI thought you would never ask. Letâs do it, Beso!âÂ
The cheers turned into shocked expressions when Sidney took the microphone again. âI canât lie to you. We had that bit planned, but we decided that since I am not playing right now and Evieâs always wanted a holiday wedding that we would go ahead and get married tonight.â Family and friends looked to Trina and Troy Crosby who shrugged their shoulders. âSo if you all will make your way to the ballroom across the hall, we are going to have a quick wedding ceremony,â he added. âGive Evie just a few minutes for a wardrobe change and wait for the music. We will start in about thirty minutes,â he announced. The band cranked back up and sang the song. Sidney and Evie made their way off the stage. They danced and sang as they made their way through the crowd to the corridor. He pulled her into a tight hug. âWell, no turning back now,â he said as he kissed her, âGo, get ready Mon Etoile. I will be waiting for you at the end of the aisle.âÂ
âThirty minutes, Beso,â she laughed, âGive me half an hour to transform into your princess.â
âYou are always my princess, even in sweats,â he smiled back.
âIâll see you in there,â she said as she began to walk away, âYou canât miss me. Iâll be the one in white.â
âCanât wait,â he said as he blew her a kiss.Â
âMe either,â she yelled back.Â
THREE WEEKS EARLIER- NOVEMBER 14TH-RITZ CARLTON- PHILADELPHIAÂ
"So what's the idea," Evie asked.Â
"Let's get married at the engagement party," he said. She opened her mouth to object and her stopped her. "Think about it, Evie," he said, "You already have the catering, band and decor planned. We just need to add another ballroom for a ceremony and additional floral decor."
"What about the ceremony? If you want a Catholic ceremony, it needs to be at a church," she protested.
"They make exceptions all the time. If they won't make an exception, then we will do a non-denominational ceremony," he argued.
"It will take a lot of work," she said as her mind raced with the details that would need to be completed. "What about the people in Nova Scotia who won't be there? They will miss it," she pondered.
"We can do both," he smiled, "Get married now and have the big party in the summer." When Evie hesitated, he got serious. "Evie, I am tired of waiting to marry you. I want you to be my wife. I want to be your husband. I know I said summer but I don't want to wait any more. Why should we? I am ready to stand in front of our family and friends and exchange our vows." Evie tried to come up with a reasonable objection without success. "Evie, you can have your dream wedding. You can have the Christmas wedding that you always wanted. Maybe this can be the silver lining from the surgery. We can have it all."
Evie warmed to the idea, "If we do it, and I mean IF, should we make it a surprise? I think we need to prepare your parents and Adriana will figure it out if we make changes to the set-up."Â
Sidney smiled, "Keep it a secret-no one knows except for the wedding party and my family. What do you think? Let's get married. Say yes, please say yes."
âI think that itâs crazy, but I think we should do it,â she beamed.
âReally?â he asked, thrilled that she was even considering it.Â
âYes, letâs make your masterplan a reality,â cheered, âLetâs do it!â
NOVEMBER 18TH-SIDNEYâS HOUSE- SEWICKLEY, PA
Sidney dialed Evie for a FaceTime call.
Evie: Beso-are you okay?
Sidney: Geno is being mean to me.
Evie: How is he being mean? What's going on?
Sidney: I am hungry and he won't make me food.
Geno shouted from the kitchen- He is lying, Evie.
Sidney: No, I am not, Evie. I just want a grilled cheese sandwich and he wonât make me one.
Geno: I made him two sandwiches already. No good for him. He too picky.
Evie: Is that true, Beso?
Sidney: They weren't like yours, Evie. He didn't use enough cheese like you.
Evie: I'll make you one when I get home. How about you have some of the leftover pasta from last night right now?
Sidney: When will you be home? I miss you.
Evie checked her watch and grimaced: I am going as fast as I can. I still need to talk to Adriana.Â
Sidney whined: How much longer?
Evie: Eat some pasta, take your medicine and then nap. I will be back before you wake up.Â
Sidney: You promise?
Evie: Yes, and I will bring you a treat if you quit giving Geno a hard time.Â
Adriana laughed from the door. Evie turned and smiled.Â
Evie: Do we have a deal, Beso?
Sidney: Okay, but come home soon.Â
Evie finished her goodbyes to Sidney and waved Adriana into the conference room that she had turned into a makeshift office.Â
Adriana: Gringo Boy is being a baby?Â
Evie raised an eyebrow: A- be nice. He is still in pain and going a little stir crazy. He is allowed to be a little needy.Â
Adriana: How many times has he FaceTimed you today?Â
Evie blushed: That's Facetime number three
"So why are you in the office today?" Adriana asked as she came in and took a seat.Â
Evie looked up, "I needed to walk the ballroom to see if my changes would work."
"Changes to the engagement Party?", Adriana asked incredulously. She would not go as far as to call Evie a Bridezilla, but the planning of the engagement party had been meticulous with multiple meetings to nail down all the details. With the date less than three weeks away, Adriana was confused as to what changes could be made.
"Yes, I'm just adding some space for the ceremony," Evie replied coolly. "The Knox is available and it will work for what we need."
Adriana blinked slowly. "What kind of ceremony?"
Evie smiled, "It has to be a secret."
"What has to be a secret?" Adriana leaned forward.
"Sidney and I are going to get married at the engagement party," Evie leaned forward and spoke in a conspiratorial tone. "We are changing the engagement party into a wedding," she added.
"What? Why?" Adriana gasped. Then she looked down at Evie's abdomen. "Are you pregnant?"
"Noooooo!" Evie shrieked. Adriana raised an eyebrow as Evie explained. "It was Sidney's idea. You know I wanted a Christmas wedding because my parents had one. It was the reason we chose the date for the engagement party. With Sidney's surgery and recovery time, we have the opportunity to actually get married on my parent's anniversary," she rambled. "I mean everything is basically planned. We just needed the ceremony space. The Knox ballroom is available. We just need to adjust the contract a bit to add it, change the menu a bit and add wedding cake."
Adriana smiled, "EvieâŠ..You are going to get married in three weeks? Have you thought of everything? You need a bouquet. Will your dress be in by then? I thought it was going to take six months for the dresses.â
âShit, I forgot about the dress.â Evie said in frustration, I canât believe I forgot about the dress.âÂ
âHey Evita,â Adriana soothed, âYou just need a fairy godmother or kick ass best friend. Youâre lucky that you have one of those. Weâll get it all worked out. Focus on what matters right now which is getting Sidney healthy. Weâll divide and conquer the rest.â
Evie smiled, âYouâre the best A.âÂ
Together they sat down and created a list of everything that would have to get done. They divided it into different categories- Evie, Adriana and Sidney. Evie was in charge of bridal party wardrobe and floral decor changes. Adriana would handle the logistics of the hotel. Sidney was assigned the task of the marriage license, wedding officiant and other legal issues. By the time she left to go home, Evie felt confident that Sidney's masterplan was going to become a reality.
EARLY EVENING- SIDNEYâS HOUSE- SEWICKLEY, PA
âBeso,â Evie called out as she entered the house, âIâm home.â
âIâm in the living room,â he groaned as she walked inside. She picked up the pace when she heard the sound of his voice. He was lounging on the couch with the TV.Â
Geno poked his head out of the kitchen. "You home! Thank God- he is impossible to please.â Sidney glared at Geno and folded his arms. Evie walked over to the couch and kissed the top of his head. Geno continued to complain. "First pasta was too cold, then pasta was too hot, and we wait until it was just right," the Russian complained.Â
Sidney shrugged his shoulders, "I like it at the right temperature- that's all."
Evie pursed her lips together, "Did you take your pain medicine? What's your level at?"
Geno walked in, "He refuse pill. Think he is tough man."
Evie got up and retrieved his medicine along with some orange juice. She placed the pill in Sidney's hand. "Take it," she demanded. He opened his mouth to object. "Then stand up," she challenged, "by yourself." He took the pill without further complaint. "Now say thank you to Geno for taking care of you," she commanded.Â
"Thank you, Geno," Sidney obeyed.
Evie gave him another kiss in the head, "I am going to walk Geno out. Think about what you want to eat."
âJust order in food,â Sidney pouted, âI want you here with me, not in the kitchen. You were gone too long.â
Evie smiled as she returned to the couch with phone in hand. She reclined on her end of the couch and he moved gingerly to rest his head in her lap. She ran her right hand through his hair as he looked up at her. âTell me about your day,â he requested. She told him about the mountain of emails that waited for her. She had worked as much as possible from her phone while they were in Philly, but her first full day âback in the officeâ was full of demands. âDid you tell A about Operation Iceburgh?â he asked with a smile. He was really quite pleased with himself for coming up with the code name for their plan. âWhat did she say?â he asked.Â
âWell, she asked if I was pregnant,â Evie chuckled. Sidneyâs eyes widened in surprise. âPeople will make assumptions about why we are moving it up, Beso,â she smiled, âThey will figure it out when I get drunk at the wedding or when my belly doesnât start to grow.âÂ
Sidney grimaced, âI donât want people to think we are getting married out of obligation. I want them to know the truth.â
Evie caressed his cheek, âI think that we are safe, Sidney. Weâve been engaged for a couple of months. I am pretty sure that people will know the truth.â She gazed into his eyes and saw his pupils dilating slightly- the telltale sign the pain medicine was kicking in.Â
âWe are getting married because we are in love,â he insisted.Â
She nodded her head in amusement, âYes, we are, Beso. We are getting married because you love me and I love you. People will figure it out.â
âWe are in love,â he said emphatically.Â
Evie steered the conversation into a different direction, âSo what did you parents say when you told them?â His eyebrows knitted together. âYou did call them, right?â she asked, âBeso, we need to tell them soon so they can arrange travel.â
âI forgot. I got busy arguing with Geno and forgot,â he answered sheepishly, âI will call right now.â He dug his phone out of his pocket and FaceTimed his parents.Â
Troy: Hey Sid- How are you feeling? Did you survive the day without Evie?
Sid: I am okay. The pain is manageable today. Today was awful without Evie.Â
Trina: What made it awful, Sid?
Sidney: She wasnât here. I missed her. Also, Geno was mean to me.Â
Trina: Geno was mean? How was Geno mean?
Sidney: He wouldnât make me food until Evie made him.
Evie lifted the phone out of his hand and spoke directly to Trina.
Evie: Sidney was being particular about his grilled cheese sandwich. Apparently Geno doesnât use the same amount of cheese as I do. They settled on pasta instead. Isnât that right, Sidney?
Sidney nodded his head as if his parents could still see his face.Â
Evie: Hereâs Sidney back.Â
Sidney: I have an announcement to make.Â
He paused and looked at Evie.
Sidney: Well, we have an announcement to make.Â
His parents looked on in anticipation.
Sidney: I am going marry Evie sooner. No waiting until summer. Summer is too long to wait.Â
Troy and Trina looked at each other and then at Sidney.Â
Trina spoke slowly: I am sorry. What did you say?
Sidney: I am going to marry Evie at the engagement party. Not going to wait. Nope, going to do it then. She is going to be my WIFE.Â
Sidney's speech started to slow and he smiled helplessly. He leaned his head back and smiled at Evie. His parents looked at each in confusion.Â
Evie grabbed the phone again.Â
Evie: We decided to get married at the engagement party. Itâs going to surprise everyone except the wedding party and family.Â
Troy: Why the change in plans? Is there anything else going on?
Sidneyâs eyes got big and he grabbed the phone back: SHE IS NOT PREGNANT. No, she is not pregnant. She going to get her period this weekend. Definitely not pregnant. Not pregnant yet, but one day she will get pregnant. I will do it. Evie, I am going to get you pregnant one day. Weâre going to have babies. I want to have babies with you.
Evie grabbed the phone again and patted Sidneyâs head.Â
Evie: Wow, that was TMI, Sidney.Â
Evie blushed and smiled timidly at Trina and Troy who were bouncing between the need to laugh and confusion on the new plan.Â
Evie: Since Sidney is on injured reserve and wonât be playing for a while, we are going to take the opportunity to have the Christmas wedding that I wanted. We will be able to have the same anniversary as my parents.Â
Trina: Wow. Thatâs a big change. What about all the deposits we put down here?
Evie: We are going to keep everything the same. Weâll re-do the ceremony and vows and then have the big party still.Â
Sidney grabbed the phone and smiled at his parents.Â
Sidney: Itâs in less than three weeks. You need to come. And Taylor, too. She needs to come because we are getting married. Yes, we are getting married because we are IN LOVE, not because Evie is pregnant.Â
Troy: Sid, thatâs great. You sound like you could use a little rest since your pain meds kicked in.Â
Sidney: Yep, I am sleepy.Â
He yawned loudly before he perked up.
Sidney shouted: Evie!Â
Evie laughed: Yes, Sidney?
Sidney: Weâll be married at Christmas. When we go home to Nova Scotia for Christmas, I will be your HUSBAND-not your fiancĂ©.Â
Evie: Thatâs true. Now say goodbye to your parents.Â
Sidney smiled a goofy grin: Bye. My fiancé told me to say bye. Bye!
Evie took the phone from his hand: Sorry for the goofiness. He just had pain meds. I will update you with the details. See you soon.Â
She placed the phone on the side table and looked down at Sidney who continued to gaze up at her lovingly.Â
Sidney: Check that off of the list.Â
Evie: Speaking of list, I have a list of stuff for you to start doing for the wedding. Can I trust you to get it all done?
Sidney: Yes maâam
He mock saluted her and she mussed his hair.Â
Evie: I think itâs time to get you some dinner into you before you crash.Â
Sidney: Yes maâam
Evie laughed: I donât know, Sidney. I am digging this agreeable and compliant version of you.Â
Sidney wiggled his eyebrows: Donât get used it, Evie. I will return to bossiness when I feel better. Iâll show you whoâs in charge around here.Â
Evie: Promises, promises. You have another two and half weeks before you can do that.
BLACK FRIDAY-NOVEMBER 22ND-SIDNEYS HOUSE- SEWICKLEY, PA
Sidney was in the basement watching the Penn State game with several guys from the team when a notification popped up on his phone.Â
His head popped up when he heard the door leading in from the garage slam shut. Sidney got up from the sectional and called back to the guys, âIâll be back. Evieâs home.â When he emerged at the top of the stairs, he saw her standing in the walk-in pantry. He could tell from her head movement that she was in search of something specific.Â
âMon Etoile,â he said softly, âHow did it go?â
She didnât turn around. Instead, she stepped further into the pantry. âDo we have any chocolate? I NEED some chocolate,â she whined. The slight nasal tinge to her voice told him that she had been crying. Adriana had not exaggerated with her text.Â
âRemember- you threw all the sweets and junk food in the trash yesterday?â he answered. âYou said that you had stuffed yourself on Thanksgiving so you needed to get back in control,â he said hesitantly.Â
âAre you fucking kidding me?â she squealed as she remembered. âLetâs eat healthyâ Evie had been very thorough in her purge of the pantry. âWhy did you let me do that, Beso?â she continued to whine. Sidney paused and stared. She turned to face him. Her face was stained with tears and she put her hands on her hips. It was abundantly clear to Sidney that there was no good answer to her question, but he answered anyway.Â
âYou said that you have to fit into a dress in two weeks. You didnât want to gain any weight,â he offered. âPersonally I donât think that you have to worry about that at all,â he began to add, âI think that your body is absolutely perfect. Any dress you pick will look great.â
She stepped out of the pantry and slammed the door. The noise was loud enough for the group of guys below to look up in surprise. âWell, I donât have to worry about that now,â she huffed.Â
âYou donât have to worry about what now?â Sidney questioned.Â
âI donât have to worry about fitting into a dress because I canât find a damn dress,â she cried out loudly.Â
âWhat do you mean you canât find a dress?â Sidney blinked, âYouâve been gone all day long. You didnât find a dress?â
âNo, I didnât find a dress, Sidney,â she crossed her arms over her chest. âWe went to six stores and nothing,â she said as she fought back tears. Sidney walked over to her and wrapped his arms around her. âI am not going to find one,â she cried into his chest, âI am not going to find a dress for the wedding.â
"Nothing in six shops? Really?" Sidney soothed. He felt her body tense beneath his touch and she placed her hands on his chest to push out of his grasp.
"Yes, really," she hissed, "You can ask Adriana if you don't believe me."
Sidney stepped back and began defensive maneuvers, "I believe you. Can you explain it to me though? I don't understand why it's so hard."
Evie started a tirade about dress lead times which necessitated getting an off the rack dress. The options of those dresses were limited and according to Evie, cheaply made and not good enough. By the end she had worked herself into a lather.
"Evie," he stared into her eyes, "It doesn't have to be the perfect dress. I think you are being too picky."
"YES, IT DOES! IT HAS TO BE PERFECT," she yelled, "I have to look beautiful for you. I have to look beautiful."
Sidney's mind raced. There had to be some sort of solution. "Are you sure that you can't get the other dress?" He asked for confirmation. He had been present, although heavily medicated, during a desperate phone call to Kleinfeld's bridal salon. "Would they sell you the sample dress?" he probed.
Evie's head popped up, "I forgot to ask."
"We'll call Monday," Sidney soothed, "We will find the perfect dress. I promise you. Don't stress yourself out."
Evie inhaled deeply, "Okay. How are you coming on your list? Is the priest set? Can he come down?"
Sid pursed his lips together, "about thatâŠ."
Evie stepped back and looked up at his face, "What?"
"Technically according to church law, the marriage ceremony must be performed inside of a church," he answered. When he saw the panic spread across her face, he added "Don't panic, don't panic." She leaned against the kitchen island and crossed her arms. "We can't get married in the eyes of the church here, but we can do that at the July ceremony in Halifax." She moved and began to pace. "Evie, don't panic," he added, "We can have the ceremony here performed by a justice of the peace or wedding officiant. Everything will be legal and we can do the religious part later." She stopped and stared at him. "I already booked the best rated one. We are all set," he smiled.
"Really? Thank you, Beso" she gave him a soft smile "What about the prenup? Does your lawyer have it almost ready?" she asked. Sidney stared at her. Evie crossed her arms again. "Have you even called your lawyer?" she probed, "Well?"
"You were serious? That wasn't a joke?â, he deadpanned.
"Yes, I was serious," she answered, "Of course we need a prenup."
"No, we don't. I am not doing it," he responded, raising his voice. "I can't believe you are even suggesting it. No, no way- It's going NOT to happen."
"Yes, it is. You have to have a prenup to protect your money. Ask the guys. They get prenups," she raised her voice in response.
"Protect my money from whom?" he raised her volume to match hers.
"From gold diggers!" she screamed.
"I am not marrying a golddigger," he stepped forward and screamed, "I am marrying YOU. Are you a gold digger all of a sudden? Since when?"
Evie stepped forward and yelled back, "Do you think I am? Is that what you think?" Downstairs Geno and Letang exchanged glances. The words were unclear but the volume said it all.
"Evie, what the hell are you talking about?" Sidney took his tone up a notch, "You brought up gold diggers. You brought up a prenup, not me!"
"People will ask, Sidney," she brought her voice down a notch.
"So what? Let them ask," he dropped his tone.
"They will think I am taking advantage. They will assume I am only after your money," she insisted.
"And?" his tone rose again.
"What do you mean and?" Her volume rose again.
"I don't give a fuck what other people think. I know that you are not." He yelled, "This is exhausting, Evie. It's tiring and frankly, insulting."Â
"I justâŠ.." her voice lowered, "I just don't want people to thinkâŠ." Her voice trailed off.
"Look, I know that Thad fucked with your head about that, but when are you going to let it go," he pleaded, "When are going to trust me?"Â
"I do trust you," she said in a hushed tone."
"You are not acting like it. You are not acting at all," Sidney answered with a pained expression on his face.
"Beso," she took a step towards him, "I do trust you. You know that."
"Then start acting like it," he sighed, "I am going to go back downstairs. I don't want to be around you right now."
"Beso," she stepped toward him and put her hand on his chest, "I don't want to fight. I'm sorry. I don't want to fight."
"Me either," he said, "I will talk to you later." He turned and walked away. When he got downstairs, Geno greeted him with a cold beer. Sidney grabbed it from his hand and took a long swig. "Did everyone hear?" he asked quietly.
"We heard voices but not what was said," the Russian answered casually, "Don't worry. Everyone married. We know women."
Sidney took another swig. He wasn't necessarily embarrassed that his teammates heard them fighting. It was more that they fought at all. He shook his head and tried to clear his head.Â
He smiled at his phone before he sat. Geno looked over with a grin "See, I told you no worry." Sid nodded his head and relaxed.
Upstairs, in their bedroom, Evie undressed, started a hot shower before she went to pee. She groaned as she wiped. "Damn," she thought to herself, "That explains so much." She also smiled at the memory of Sidney's drug-addled conversation with his parents. Even high as a kite, he knew that her period should start that day. Nothing slipped past his notice.
She took a long, leisurely shower and dressed in soft, fleece pajamas with fuzzy socks. Evie pulled the blanket up to her chin and rested her head on the pillow. She stared at the ceiling and replayed each dress from the day. Surely, one of them would work. As each dress was eliminated in her mind, she tried to force her mind to relax. The adrenaline from her argument with Sidney still pulsed through her veins. She opened her eyes and looked at her phone. It was a little after eight PM.
With a sigh, she stood up and walked out the bedroom. She wandered aimlessly until she eyed the door to the attic. The only thing left unpacked from her official move into Sidney's house were the dozen or so large boxes from her parent's house in Dallas. When she sold the house, the one luxury that she allowed herself were professional packers.
It was too soon after her parent's deaths to go through the contents of the house herself. Each item contained too many memories. With the exception of her bedroom furniture, every single household item was donated to a local thrift shop benefiting LGBT youths. Her bedroom furniture and all personal mementos of her parents were boxed up and delivered to her small grad student apartment. After graduation, the contents were moved to her apartment. Then it moved to her cottage and now to Sidneyâs house. She mentally corrected herself- our house. It had been moved to our house.
Evie opened the door and climbed the stairs. The attic was uncluttered. Most of Sidney's mementos were stored either at his parent's home or a climate controlled storage unit. The boxes from her parent's home were stacked neatly to the side.
She walked over to the first box and opened it. Inside were the contents of her childhood bedroom. She took out her phone, turned on Spotify and hit shuffle. Gingerly she picked up the homecoming mum that had been placed on top. Evie's fingers ran over the long ribbons that were bedazzled with glittery letters. Each ribbon contained a different message- Homecoming 2009, HP Scots, HP Belles Captain, Thad and Evie with a heart.
She remembered the pride she felt that night she wore the mum to the game. Thad Wilson was her boyfriend. Together they made quite the power couple. He being the star of the football team and she being a drill team officer. Little did she know at the time that none of it would make a difference in her life. Evie put the mum down and glanced at the rest of the box.
Downstairs, in the basement, Sidney glanced at the stairs every few minutes. It didn't take long for Geno to notice. One of the benefits of being teammates for so long was the ability to decipher the unsaid messages. Sidney's message was loud and clear. He was desperate to find Evie and resolve their conflict, but was unwilling to risk appearing rude to his guests. So when the game ended, Geno stood and abruptly said that it was time for everyone to go. "Go, go, go," the Russian barked, "Sid still recovering. He need Evie to take care of him. Out- everybody out."
Sidney smiled a sly grin and escorted everyone upstairs. No sooner than when the door shut, he started climbing the stairs. He opened the bedroom door and saw the bed empty. "Evie," he called out in case she was in the bathroom. When he received no response, he turned to leave. Possibly she had gone down to the kitchen he thought to himself. As he walked down the hall, he heard the sound of music. He turned in the direction of the sound and saw the door to the attic open.
Sidney climbed the stairs while calling out, "Evie?" When he reached the top, he stopped and gazed at Evie. She sat with her back to him. A box of mementos spread before her and she sang a sad song.
https://youtu.be/9-rKvhsjwKU
That I'm not a princess, this ain't a fairy tale
I'm not the one you'll sweep off her feet
Lead her up the stairwell
This ain't Hollywood, this is a small town
I was a dreamer before you went and let me down
Now it's too late for you and your white horse
To come around
"Evie," Sidney said softly. She turned to him and he saw her tear-stained face. She got up and ran to him. He embraced her as she threw herself into his arms. The song continued as he held her.
Maybe I was naive, got lost in your eyes
And never really had a chance
My mistake, I didn't know to be in love
You had to fight to have the upper hand
I had so many dreams about you and me
Happy endings, now I know
Evie pressed her face and whispered "I'm sorry, Sidney. I am so sorry." He pressed his hand behind her head.
And there you are on your knees
Begging for forgiveness, begging for me
Just like I always wanted but I'm so sorry
Evie leaned back and sang to Sidney who looked confused.
'Cause I'm not your princess, this ain't a fairytale
I'm gonna find someone someday
Who might actually treat me well
This is a big world, that was a small town
There in my rear-view mirror disappearing now
And it's too late for you and your white horse
Now it's too late for you and your white horse
To catch me now
When the song ended,.he questioned, "Evie?" as he wiped her tears, "What are you doing up here? Why are you crying?"
She stepped back and pointed to the boxes. "I couldn't sleep and didn't want to go downstairs. I came up here to go through these boxes." She moved towards them.
"What boxes are they?" he said as he followed her.
"It's stuff from my parent's house. I never had the courage to go through them. I am not sure what made me do it tonight," she explained.
"Why are you crying?" He asked.
She looked back at the open boxes. "These boxes are everything from the Thad years," she offered, "I was going down that not-so-pleasant memory lane when our break-up song came on."
"What's the name of the song?" He asked, curious to learn more.
"White Horse," Evie informed him. She turned to Sidney. "I used to listen to it on repeat after he broke my heart." He pursed his lips and she stepped towards him. "I always focused on the chorus of 'That I'm not a princess, this ain't a fairytale'" she stated as she wrapped her arms around Sidney's waist. She pressed her forehead against his chest and kissed it softly. "I should have focused on 'Cause I'm not your princess, this ain't a fairytale.I'm gonna find someone someday who might actually treat me well," she said gazed into Sidney's eyes.
"I did," she sighed, "I found you. I wasn't his princess, but I am yours. You gave me the fairytale."
He smiled, "Yes, you are. You will always be my princess." He bent down to kiss her softly then he pressed his head against her forehead. "Unfortunately for our fairytale to work, we need to talk about earlier."
"Okay," she replied, "Can I say something in my defense? He nodded his head which caused her head to move in response. "It seems as if I had a surge of monthly hormones that were announcing the arrival of my period. It's not an excuse but it explains my overreaction a little bit, at least to me." She stepped back and sat down on the floor. Sidney followed suit. "The wedding stress is getting to me and I haven't been good about communicating that," she confessed.
He waited patiently for her to continue. "I know that I need to let go of the gold digger fear," she offered, "but I don't understand why you are so adamantly against it."
"I am against it because it is preparing for us to fail. I don't want to think about what may happen if we were to break up," Sidney stammered, "The thought of it gives me heart palpations. If I lose you, I lose everything. I won't care about the money. I won't care about anything." Evie watched as the panic spread through him as he spoke. He was right. Even just speaking about it caused a severe physical reaction.
Honestly, Evie's heart began to race at the thought. She had been so consumed with not wanting to appear like a gold digger that she lost sight of the circumstances that would proceed it. The thought of being separated from Sidney made her heart ache. "I'm sorry, Beso," she whispered, "I thought the prenup would protect you, but I hurt you." She put her hands on either side of his face, "If you don't want a prenup, we don't have to do it. I will drop the subject and we will never talk about it again." Sidney exhaled and she kissed him.
"I don't want one," he admitted, "We don't need one."
"Okay, mark it off the list," she smiled.
They stood silently for a moment. "Want to do another box?", he asked. He walked over and opened the next one. It was much larger than the previous two. Sidney picked up a large, red leather scrapbook embossed with names Vanessa and Mark. He held it up to Evie. She put her hand over her mouth in surprise. "Is this what I think it is?" he asked. She nodded her head. "Let's go downstairs and look at it together," he suggested. She stood, gathered her phone and led him downstairs.
Once they got settled together on the couch, Sidney opened the album. The first page contained a large photo of Mark proposing to Vanessa on one knee. On the opposite page, she had written the story of Mark's proposal. The evening was supposed to be a celebration of Mark's graduation from law school at SMU. However, right after the obligatory speeches from Mark and his parents, he called Vanessa up to the front to give a speech thanking her support before dropping to one knee. Sidney silently read the story while Evie looked at his face. "Wow," he said, "That was a sweet proposal." He turned his attention to the picture. His finger touched Vanessa's face. "You really look like them," he said before he turned to face her, "They made a beautiful baby."
"Thank you," she blushed as she turned the page.
When they got to the pages containing Vanessa's bridal portraits, Sidney looked up at Evie. "What are these?" he asked.
"What do you mean?" she asked.
âI thought that your parents got married in December. These pictures are taken in early fall or summer,â he said.
âOh, those are her bridal portraits. I think it may be a southern thing,â she explained. âBrides get dressed up in their gowns and take pictures. Itâs like a trial run of the wedding day for hair and make-up. Then one of the pictures gets enlarged and displayed at the wedding.â
âOh,â he said and looked at the picture again. âThat dress is gorgeous.â
âYeah,â Evie said softly, âOnce I decided to embrace the princess vibe, it was the style I wanted to emulate. My original dress was slightly different though. It was strapless, not off the shoulder.â
Sidney continued to stare as he flipped through the pages. âWhere were the pictures taken?â he asked.
âAt the arboretum,â Evie replied, âI was planning on going down once I got my dress and take bridal portraits there too. I am not sure now.â
When they got to the photos of the actual wedding ceremony and reception, Sidney thoughtfully looked at each page. âI can see why you wanted a Christmas wedding now, â he said, âEverything is beautiful. Will ours look similar?â Evie smiled and explained the details that would be similar such as her bouquet and aisle decor. Then she explained the items that would be different like the cake and reception lighting.
Sidney yawned as she talked. It was his first full day off of pain medicine. His body was feeling the effects. He readily agreed when she suggested bed. After they slid under the covers, Evie rested her head on his chest and closed her eyes. "It's too bad you can't find a dress like your mother's dress," Sidney yawned, "It would be perfect."
"Yeah," Evie agreed, "I have no idea where to look."
They drifted off to sleep. Eventually Evie rolled over and curled into a ball. She floated into a deep sleep and began to dream.
Evie stood in a bridal suite of an unknown wedding venue. She wore nothing but the embroidered panties she had purchased especially for the wedding. There was a loud knock on the door, which startled her. "Evie!" Adriana called out, "It's time. They are about to start the music." Her head swiveled around, saw her reflection in the mirror and began to panic. She brought up her arm to cover her bare breasts.
"Evie, " Taylor called, "Are you dressed yet? Sidâs waiting on you.â Evie turned to look to where her bridal gown was supposed to be hung and the space was empty. She raced around the suite to search for the dress, but found nothing.
Taylor called again, âEvie, come on!â
A familiar voice called out from behind her, "Give us ten minutes." Evie swirled around. Her mother, Vanessa, stood near the couch, holding Evie's satin bridal robe. She held out her arms and Evie raced into them. "Mi Chiquita," her mother soothed, "Where is your dress?"
"I couldn't find one. I don't have one to wear," Evie sobbed.
"Why didn't you want to wear my dress? I kept it for you," she kissed the top of Evie's head.
Evie's head snapped up, "What do you mean you kept it for me?"
Vanessa pointed to the box on the couch. Evie ran to look at it and ripped it open. Her mother's dress was neatly folded within it. Evie took the dress out and held it gingerly against her body. "Try it on," her mother suggested. Evie stepped into the dress and turned to her mother for assistance. She zipped up the dress and together they stated at Evie's reflection.
Vanessa smiled, "Chiquita, it's like it was made for you."
"Why didn't you tell me, Mami?" Evie whispered, "It has always been my dream dress."
"I planned to tell you. I was just going to tell when you got engaged. I thought I had time butâŠ.," her voice trailed off.
"But you left me," Evie looked her mother in the eye, "You left me all alone. I needed you and you left me."
"Oh Evie," Vanessa put her hand on Evie's face, "I should have stayed. I shouldn't have left you when you needed me the most."
"Why didn't you stay?" Evie cried, "Didn't you want to stay?"
"I didn't want to leave," Vanessa explained, "I was drowning in grief. I couldn't find my way to the surface. I didn't know a way out so I gave up. I couldn't see how much it was going to hurt you, baby."
They stared at each other for a moment. "I regret it," Vanessa said, "I regret that I am not going to be here for your wedding day. I regret not being here to meet Sidney and my grandbabies. I regret leaving you alone. I wish I could stay with you forever. I don't want to leave you alone."
"I am not alone anymore. Sidney is with me," Evie said, almost defiantly. "I have a family now and they love me," she said.
"I know," Vanessa said, "Go, go and join your new family. Let them love you and take care of you." Vanessa turned to go.
Mami," she cried, "You didn't tell me where the dress is."
"You were so close. It's there. Dig deeper" she said
"Mami," Evie cried out, "Mami, don't go! Don't leave me!"
Vanessa ran back and squeezed her daughter tight, "I will see you again Mi Chiquita. Daddy and I love you. I will see you again."
"Mami, don't leave," Evie cried over and over as her mother disappeared.
Besides her, Sidney stirred to the sounds of Evie's cries. He wrapped his body around hers and kissed her head. "Evie, I am here. You are okay. I am here."
Evie woke up with a start, "Beso?"
"Yes, Mon Etoile," he whispered, "I am here. Were you having a nightmare?"
"Yes, about the wedding dress," she answered, "Then my mom came and helped me. We found a dress together." Evie wasn't sure why she felt to keep the details about the dress a secret, but she did. "We talked and she said she was sorry that she left me alone. When it was time for her to go, she said she didn't want to leave me alone again."
Evie rolled over and stared at Sidney. "I told her that I am not alone anymore. I have you and I have a family again. I am not alone."
"And I will never leave you and not come back," Sidney stated firmly as he caressed her cheek, "I will never leave you alone."
"I love you, Beso" she sighed.
"I love you, too," he said, "let's go back to sleep."
"Okay," she kissed him softly before rolling over again. She relaxed as he wrapped her in his arms again. "It was nice though- to see her in my dream. It was almost like she was here."
"I bet it was," he squeezed her tight, âI bet it helped you so much.â
NOVEMBER 23RD- SIDNEY'S HOUSE-SEWICKLEY
Evie stood in the kitchen when she heard the doorbell. She shouted, "Come in!" as she watched Sidney make coffee for her.
Adriana walked into the house and meandered into the kitchen after petting Sam. "Please tell me that you are in a better mood," she laughed as she entered. Evie had moved closer to Sidney and stood behind him. She wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her cheek on his back. She sighed contentedly as he worked. "Ahhhh, it seems so," she grinned, "Behold the power of the Beso. We should call you the Evie Tamer."
Sidney shook his head and smiled, "Nah, I prefer Evie in her natural wild state." He felt Evie giggle into his back and kiss him gently. "I will leave you ladies to your dress hunt," he teased, "Keep the faith. I think your dream was a good sign."
Evie walked him to the door and waved as he pulled out of the garage. She turned around and said, "Come with me." Adriana followed as Evie marched to the attic.
"Evita," Adriana called from behind, "I thought we were hunting for a dress?"
"We are," she replied as they climbed the stairs to the attic. Evie opened the door and ran to the box that Sidney took the wedding scrapbook from. On top was her baby book, then her baby blanket on top of the dress that she wore home from the hospital. Underneath was a large padded envelope with every card that Evie had given her parents. Finally she reached the bottom and saw the sealed white cardboard box with Stardust Bridal embossed across the front. Evie let out a loud squeal as she lifted the box. "Holy shit, it's heavy," she said with the excitement barely contained.
"What's heavy?" Adriana asked.
"I think it's my mom's wedding dress," Evie looked up.
"What?" Adriana responded.
Evie set the box down and used the box cutter to carefully open the edges of the box as she explained the dream about her mother to Adriana.
"So that's the dress?" Adriana rushed to assist Evie. Together they got the lid off of the box. Evie's hand delicately touched the white beaded satin gown. Adriana looked at Evie as the tears ran down her face.
"Try it on, try it on, try it on," Adriana shouted. Evie stripped off her clothes and stepped in the dress. She turned to let Adriana zip the dress. It fit Evie like a glove. It dawned on her that she didn't have a mirror so Adriana took a picture. "You need a petticoat, but it looks amazing," she gushed.
"I can't believe it," Evie grazed her fingers over the beaded lace, "Mami married my dad in this dress on the same date. That has to be good luck, right."
"It's the best luck," Adriana said as she surprised herself with tears, "but you don't need luck, Evita. Gringo Boy and you are meant to be."
"Are you ever going to quit calling him that," Evie grinned.
"When he makes me an Aunt?", she laughed. "Let's go find you a petticoat and veil. Then you can officially mark it off of your list."
"Don't forget your dress," Evie interjected.
"Damn," Adriana asked, "You are really going to make me wear matching dresses with Taylor?"
Evie paused, "Fine- y'all decide on a color - deep red, black or metallic gold and pick whatever dress you want."
December 5th- Sidney and Evie's house- Sewickley
Evie woke up to the sensation of Sidney's lips and tongue on her neck while his hand roamed under her pajama top. In the weeks since his surgery, Evie had developed the habit of wearing pajamas to bed to remove "temptation" for Sidney as he recovered. Behind her, she felt as hips grinded into her. She looked back to gauge whether he was fully awake or asleep. Another habit that developed is Sidney, while fully asleep, initiated sex with this exact same behavior. Evie would politely, yet firmly, remove his hands from her body while whispering explanations of "It hasn't been three weeks, Beso." and "Keep your hands to yourself, please."
She was fully prepared to do the same when he whispered hoarsely, "It's three weeks today, Mon Etoile. It's been three weeks." Her body, full of pent-up sexual energy, began to respond. When his hand slid under the elastic waistband of her pajama pants, she moaned softly as it made its way between her legs. However, her mind raced to control the situation. Her hand went to his hand that began to explore her folds. She grabbed his hand and pulled it out of her pants. Evie then delicately extricated herself from his grasp and wiggled to the far side of the bed.
Sidney groaned and wiggled to follow her. She rolled over and placed her hand against his chest. Sidney was fully awake and aroused. "Evie, it's been three weeks exactly," he whined, "I need you. I need you so much. Look at how hard I am for you."
Evie resisted the urge to glance at his erection pressed tight against his boxers. "Listen," she said with authority, "I have been thinking about this."
"Less thinking and more fucking," Sidney said with a grin. When she did not return then grin, he asked, "Thinking what?"
"I want to wait," she replied. The look of disbelief conveyed all of his thoughts without saying a word. "Beso, we have already waited this long. I want to wait until our wedding night. I want that night to be special," she added.
Sidney blinked slowly, inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly. "Are you serious?" he asked. He studied her face and her sincerity was obvious. He pinched his nose, "Tell me why again."
"I want the first time as your wife to be special," she explained.
"I think that being the first time married would automatically make it special," he countered, "Besides, I am fairly sure that the first time is going to be pretty quick."
Evie smiled sweetly, "I know that it doesn't make a lot of sense given the amount of times that we have fucked and other things. It means a lot to me. It's almost like I will be a virgin again."
"A virgin?" he smirked. He rolled over and placed his forearm over his eyes. Evie watched him mentally process her words. "If that's what you want," he sighed. He perked back up. "Hey, do virgins give handjobs?", he asked. Evie got up from the bed and walked toward the bathroom. "I'm kidding, Evie," he called out. She turned and crossed her arms. He gave her a big grin. She smiled and shook her head.
Evie continued her walk to the bathroom and stripped her pajamas off as she walked. Sidney watched her from the bed. He stood up, walked to the bathroom door and leaned against the door frame. His gaze went from the top of her head and down the length of her nude body. He licked his lips as she stepped into the shower. He looked down as she poured body wash and lathered her smooth skin. His hand went into his boxers and started to stroke his throbbing cock. She called out to him, "I see you, Beso."
"I can't help it," he whined.
"I did it in May," she teased.
"Is this payback for the playoffs?" he laughed, "That's not fair!" She opened the door and stuck out her tongue. "Pretty please? You gotta help me out here," he pouted.
She smiled, closed the door and put on a show while he jerked his hand back and forth. When she heard the tell-tale grunts and groans of his orgasm, she called out, "You're welcome, Beso."
"You need to be ready Saturday night," he said breathlessly, "I am going to fuck you senseless."
"You better," she teased.
TWO HOURS LATER-ALLEGHENY COUNTY MARRIAGE BUREAU
Sidney grabbed Evie's hand as she came around the back of the car and led her up the stairs to the courthouse. Their completed marriage license waited for them to pick it up. Sidney sighed as they reached the back of the line. His status as Pittsburgh Penguins Captain opened doors and parted lines all across the city, country and world. Unfortunately, it was not effective at the marriage license bureau and he was forced to stand in line like the rest of the prospective grooms.
Sidney pulled his cap lower on his head. Evie pulled up her hoodie and grinned up at him. He reached for her hands and pulled her into his body. She whispered, âMaybe wearing the Penguins hat wasnât the best idea?â
He kissed the top of her head, âWhat are you afraid of? I donât care if people know that I am marrying you.â
Evie looked up, âOh, I know that.â
He flashed a smile, âThen what are you afraid of?â
She returned his smile, âI am afraid that someone in this office or in this line will decide to leak that we have a marriage license before Saturday night. The wedding is supposed to be a surprise, right?â
They moved up with the line. Sidney glanced around, âYouâre right. What if I hide in the bathroom and you text me when you get up there.â He kissed her quickly and escaped to the restroom.
Twenty minutes later, Evie texted Sidney. As she waited, the clerk pulled out the marriage license. âMs. Montgomery, I just need you to confirm that information is correct,â the clerk whispered. Evie looked up and smiled, thankful for the quiet tone. She studied the license carefully. When she was sure that all the information was correct, she looked up and smiled. âGood,â the clerk smiled, âI will tell you that I am not sure that I can prevent this from getting leaked. We have some die hard Pens fans around here.â
Evie leaned forward, âI just need it to stay secret until Saturday.â She reached into her wallet and fished for cash. She came up with a crisp one hundred dollar bill and slid it across the counter. âCan you help us with that?â, she smiled.
âYour secret is safe with me,â the clerk smiled, âTell Mr. Crosby congratulations. He landed himself a beauty. Heâs a lucky man.â
âWe are both lucky,â she smiled back. Evie was walking down the hall. Her eyes searched for Sidney. She shrieked as a hand grabbed her hand and pulled into an alcove by a courtroom. âSidney!â she gasped and playfully swatted his chest, âYou scared me.â
Sidney held a finger up to his mouth and shushed her. He whispered, âDid you get the license?â Evie looked around quickly, noted the presence of a young couple then shook her head affirmatively. âGood,â Sidney whispered, âMy new friend, Harry, and his fiancĂ©e need a favor from us.â
Evie turned to look at Harry, who appeared to be in his early twenties, dressed in freshly pressed slack and buttoned down shirt. Next to him was a very pretty, yet very pregnant brunette, who wore a short white lace dress with an empire waist. The young man extended his hand, âHi, I am Harry and this is my fiancĂ©e , Marissa.â He looked at his fiancĂ©e with a look of love that rivaled Sidneyâs. âI had the good fortune to run into Sid in the menâs room. I mean what are the odds that I would run into my hockey hero here at the marriage license office.â Sidney moved closer to Evie and slid his arm around her waist as Harry continued to speak. âAnyway, Marissa and I want to get married today, but our witnesses flaked out on us. Itâs really important that we get married today. Marissa is due any day now and we want to be married before the baby comes.â Evie looked at Sidney and then at Marissa and nodded her head in understandment. âSo would you be willing to do it for us? It would mean the world to us if you could help us out.â he asked hopefully.
âAbsolutely! I would be honored to witness your ceremony,â Evie said brightly as she leaned into Sidneyâs body. Just then the courtroom doors opened and the previous couple walked out, followed by a gaggle of family and friends. Marissa let out a soft sigh. Evie took her hand and whispered, âYou look gorgeous and radiant. Letâs go get you married to your man.â
They all walked in together and took their positions in front of the judge. Marissa cradled her bump and grinned up at Harry. The elderly judge cleared his throat, "Please join hands." The young couple joined hands.
Evie pulled out her phone and nudged Sidney to do the same. When he looked at her in question, she gestured that he needed to take video of the ceremony. It took a moment before he grinned and nodded in understatement. Both armed with cameras, they turned as the judge began the ceremony.
Weâre here today to witness the union of Harry and Marissa in marriage. Today, you begin a new life together, founded in love, laughter, honesty, respect, and friendship. The promises you make to each other today should not be taken lightly. A marriage is more than a ceremony â it is a lasting and lifelong commitment.
Evie felt tears filling her eyes. She imagined her own wedding to Sidney. While the script would be different, the universal nature of marriage became apparent to her. She and Sidney would soon join the club so-to-speak.
Do you, Harry, take Marissa to be your spouse and to live together as partners, to treat them with love and respect, and to build a marriage that grows stronger and more loving as time passes?
Harry: Yes, I do.
Evie looked to Sidney. He turned his head to look at her while holding the camera straight. He mouthed the words "I do".
And do you, Marissa, take Harry to be your spouse and to live together as partners, to treat them with love and respect, and to build a marriage that grows stronger and more loving as time passes?
Marissa: Yes, I do.
Sidney stared as Evie wiped her tears and mouthed the word, "I do."
The brief ceremony continued with the exchange of simple gold bands. Evie continued with her self-imposed duty of the wedding photographer but felt as Sidney's hand searched for her hand. She gave it to him to hold.
By the virtue of the authority vested in me by the State of Pennsylvania, I now pronounce you married.
You may kiss! Congratulations!
Sidney and Evie cheered wildly as the young lovers sealed their marriage with a kiss. The foursome stood by the courtroom doors as the judge completed the paperwork. Harry shook Sidney's hand, "I can't tell how much this means to us. To have Sidney Fucking Crosby as our witness, man, we are blessed."
Evie giggled and gazed at Sidney. He smiled joyously, "It was an honor to be included. I hope you have a wonderful life together, especially with that little Penguin on the way."
Marissa joked, "Just wait until everyone hears about it. They will be so jealous." Sidney and Evie exchanged a look. Sidney looked at Marissa, "About that.". He pulled out his wallet and pulled out ten crisp one hundred dollar bills. "If you could not tell the part about us until Sunday morning, we would be really grateful," he said smoothly as he palmed the cash to Harry, "We are trying to pull off a surprise wedding Saturday night."
Harry and Marissa gasped at the cash, "Oh yes, we can keep a secret."
Evie interjected, "Where are you spending your wedding night?"
Marissa blushed, "He is taking me to the Cheesecake Factory and then home."
Evie smiled, "If you would allow me, I would love to arrange a night at the Fairmont for you. You can have the best suite available. Everything is on us." Harry and Marissa tried to object. "Please let us do it for you. This has been such a treat for us to witness," Evie argued as Sidney wrapped his arm around her waist. Her spontaneous generosity was just another reason he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. Evie sent a few texts and exchanged numbers with Marissa to send pics.
They waited while Harry and Marissa exited. As soon as they left and they were alone in the courtroom, Sidney pulled Evie into an embrace. She laughed as he showered her with kisses. "Eighty hours," he whispered, "Eighty hours until I can call you my WIFE."
"I can't wait,Beso," she smiled.
"Me either," he kissed her passionately.

just a lil firefighter!sid fluff for y'all :)
gif from @ehghtysevenarchive + per this ask and others
Surely, the chief of Canada's oldest fire department has more important things to do on a crisp morning, the last one preceding a fresh week, than this. He most definitely does. And, yes, Chief Crosby is known for his pragmatic approach to, well, everything.
But neither carries weight hereânot when she calls.
Leaky faucet, dead car battery, unreachable spider... It doesn't matter. One ring, and he's rushing home. He can't pin-point when the pattern began, likely sometime shortly between the day you moved into town and his first off-day, but it's a routine he's come to enjoy despite the extra strain on both his schedule and his body; Sidney never thought sharing a property line could be so tedious or time-consuming.
He knows he shouldn't enjoy the distraction as much as he does. You aren't together, Sidney doesn't ever allow his imagination wander that far, but he can't help it. He can't help but help. He rarely turns down anyone in need, which has done wonders for his reputation within the community, but with you... With you, it's different, and embarrassingly so.
He doesn't have the words to explain it. Not that he needs to, it's written plainly across his face.
There's a reason you're regular fixtures in the town's gossip column.
When he arrives on sceneânot ten minutes after his F-Series crawled down the gravel driveâSidney shakes his head and laughs. Collecting his cell and his radio, he slips out of the truck, watching as you fret like a mother hen.
Still in your slippers, you're stood at the base of a decently-sized red spruce wedged between his yard and yours, your crumpled face angled up into the yellow-green needles. You're the very picture of worry, wringing your trembling hands and muttering to yourself.
A stray kitten caught in a tree, that's what's got you in a such a state.
"Well, this is a new one," he bellows in lieu of a greeting, slamming the door shut as his boots hit the ground.
Briefly, your glassy eyes dart in his direction. You're midway through your customary apology when he arrives at your side and quiets you, just as he always does.
"They're more than capable of holding down the fort for however long it takes to rescue our new friend, okay?"
"I know, but what ifâ"
"But nothing," Sidney huffs, and he dares to take you by the shoulders. And, externally, he ignores the way you shiver under his palms. "If I didn't think it was safe for me to step out for a couple of minutes, I wouldn't. You believe me, right?"
You nod, bottom lip pinched between your teeth.
"Good. Now, how 'bout you keep an ear on this," Sidney sets the clunky satellite radio in your hand, "âand I'll grab the ladder from the shed?"
He doesn't really need your help monitoring the channel, but he knows you'll feel better if you feel like you're doing something. Like him, you find comfort in your utility.
In less than a minute, Sidney re-emerges, rounding the corner with a ladder in hand. You're in the same spot, now fidgeting with the radio, anxiously dumping it from one palm to the other and back again. He follows your gaze to line up the simple equipment necessary for the rescue operation.
Sidney's heart swells as you quietly step forward to spot him.
Lucky for everyone, the ball of orange fur is on the branch nearest to the ground. Sidney needs only to step up onto the first wrung to safetly coax the frightened creature into his waiting hands, he's back on the ground not long after.
He gives the kitten a gentle parting scratch under the chin, then transfers the purring fluff to you. The soft bundle takes to you immediately, nuzzling into your chest like that's where it wanted to be all along.
"I think he likes you," Sidney observes with a cheek-numbing grin.
Your lips are tipped up at the end and there's fan of happiness rooting itself around your eyes. Your mouth opens to reply, but before the words comeâ
"Well, would you look at this?"
Across the quiet street and a few houses to the left sits an audience of two. Both of which are now cooing as loudly as two ladies in their sixties can manage. Coffee cups in one hand and their cellphones propped up in the other, they fawn over the two of you as if it's live theater.
Sidney curses their sons, who he'd completed the explorer program with as teens, for enabling this technological torture.
"Smile, you two! Oh, Denise is just going to eat this up," one of them, a spitfire in a 4'11 frame by the name of Mrs. Bouchard, exclaims to her co-conspirator, Ms. Johnston.
Then, to no one's surprise and Sid's chagrin, they giddily type out their respective messages to the local paper's equally-nosy editor-in-chief.
"Looks like we're front-page news again," you hum bashfully.
The tabby mewls in your arms. You curl into the little bundle of fur, lips landing between its delicate ears.
Sid studies you in his periphery as he slips in and out of heady contemplation, ultimately deciding he doesn't mind as much as he once did. "That we are..."

I'm still haunted by the memories - S. Crosby
Summary: Maeva thought five years was long enough to get over Sidney breaking her heart. Apparently not.
Words: 5.5k
This is my fic for @senditcoltonââs birthday bingo! I chose the bingo squares âwedding seasonâ, âIt was always youâ, âfree space â argument sceneâ, âsecond chance romanceâ, and âinterrupted kissâ. I havenât written a full fic for Sid in ages, so I really hope you like this!
Warnings: angst, past break up scene, exes to (potential) lovers
Title: Little do you know, by Alex & Sierra
~
âWhat am I to you?â
âWhat?â Sidney asked, confused.
âWhat am I to you? What do I mean to you?â
âWhatâs going on, Maeva?â he asked, frowning.
âCan you just answer my question please?â
Sidney frowned even more at the sharpness of her voice. âYouâre my girlfriend. I love you. Whatâs going on?â
âYou love me?â
âYes! Mae, seriouslyâŠâ
She could tell he was getting frustrated now, but that didnât settle the gnawing feeling in her stomach.
âWeâve been together five years now. I love you more than I thought couldâve ever loved anyone. Five years of cheering you on no matter what. Five years of supporting you and the team and all the better halves as theyâve come and gone. Five years of always coming second but putting on a smile because I know hockey is your whole world. But I thought I wouldâve at least had a part of it?â
âI donât understand what you mean. Of course youâre part of my world,â Sidney said, confused.
Was he really going to be that cruel, to pretend he didnât know what she meant?
âAt the team get together this weekend, when we celebrated the latest Pens rookie getting engaged, someone joked to you about when you were going to put a ring on my finger too. But you just snorted and changed the subjectâŠâ
She trailed off, watching Sidneyâs face pale a little bit, his reaction sinking like a stone in her stomach.
âI donâtâŠwhere did you hear that?â
âI was right behind you, Sid. I was right there and Kris & Cath saw me but you didnât. They sent me pitying smiles and I hated it, Sid. Why donât you want a life with me?â Maeva asked, her voice finally cracking as tears threatened to spill.
âWe already have a life together. Why do we need to complicate it?â
âComplicate it? You think marriage is just a complication?â she shot back.
âI just donât see why we need to put a label on things. Weâve got a good thing going,â Sidney huffed.
âLabels? Are you kidding me? Iâm nearly 30, Sid, and all I have to show for the thing Iâve poured my heart into for five years is a couple of photos on your cup days? You wonât take me out in public, you donât talk about me to anyone outside of your team and your immediate family, you can clearly drop me at any momentâŠare you ashamed of our relationship? Have I been wasting my time?â
âDamn it Mae, Iâm not ashamed! I thought you understood that I like my privacy!â
Thatâs all he took out of it?
âI know you value it, Sid, but I didnât think it would get to this point. I didnât think you would go this far. Iâm tired of being an afterthought to you!â
âAnd Iâm tired of you being so insecure!â
Her breath hitched in her throat as a pang of hurt rang through her chest, and she could see a flash of regret immediately pass over Sidneyâs face.
âMaevaâŠâ
âIâm done. I canât do this anymore, Sid. There is nothing wrong with wanting to feel appreciated and there is nothing wrong with wanting to know that I have a future to look forward to. Because apparently I donât. Who knew that Sidney Crosby was such a commitment-phobe?â
~
Maeva glanced out of the airplane window, hazy memories passing through her mind as the plane started its decent into Halifax airport. It didnât seem like it had been five years since her life with Sidney had fallen apart, almost as long as their just-over-five-years relationship. But the memories of that awful night still burned her heart like a hot poker. She may have left him that night, may have returned to Canada, but she hadnât been able to move back to Nova Scotia. Sheâd tried, sure, but sheâd only lasted a few months before the memories of their time there together was too much to bear too. It had felt right to flee to the other side of Canada, all the way to Vancouver where she was able to secure an apartment and a job where no-one knew who she was. Maeva had only visited her parents a few times in the five years since â and only when she knew he absolutely wouldnât be there.
Everything had just hurt too much. It still did.
But now, for the first time in as long as she could remember, she was heading back to Cole Harbour in the summer. Her cousin Natasha was getting married, and her aunt had begged Maeva to come home to join her parents in attending. If it wasnât for the fact that she and Natasha had grown up as close as sisters, Maeva wouldâve found an excuse somehow â but she couldnât bring herself to do it. All she had to do was survive the long weekend. It was late Thursday evening that sheâd flown over, leaving Friday for wedding errands, Saturday for the pre-wedding celebrations, and Sunday for the wedding day itself - both ceremony and reception. Sheâd managed to book a flight home at midday on Monday, but she knew that this weekend was going to be a test of her strength.
Maeva had done so well to protect her heart for so long, and she didnât want a few days back in Cole Harbour to ruin it.
It didnât take long for her to pick up her suitcase and head to the arrivals area, a small smile crossing her lips at the sight of her dad waiting for her. Maeva could happily admit that she was a daddyâs girl, through and through, the two of them having the only blonde hair in the family, his quiet calm aura always making her feel happy and secure. That was one of the only things she regretted about not toughing it out in Cole Harbour â she didnât get to spend the time with her dad that he deserved.
She made a mental note not to take that for granted this weekend.
âMy little Maeva,â he said gruffly, warmth seeping into every word as he hugged her tightly.
âItâs good to see you. IâmâŠIâm sorry itâs been so long,â she murmured when they eventually separated.
âOh donât you worry about that. Iâm just glad youâre home for the wedding. Lord knows I need a little more sanity in the house.â
Maeva just snickered, looping her arm through her dadâs as they started to walk out to the parking lot. âMomâs succumbed to wedding fever then?â
âHappily skipped into crazy town, more like it,â he grinned, âI donât think I can survive another day of folding bits of paper into little birds to decorate the tables.â
Maeva just grimaced, making her dad laugh. That sounded like her idea of nightmare chaos. âAny chance we can avoid most of the wedding prep tomorrow?â
Her dad just smiled indulgently. âOh Iâm sure I can figure something out.â
She really had missed him.
~
Just as her dad had promised, he managed to get the two of them out of the intense wedding preparations that the family were taking part in on Friday. The two of them went out for a long breakfast in the morning, before her mom could bundle her into the car and over to her auntâs, and after a slow walk by the waterside, telling him all about her life in Vancouver and her small circle of friends and her low-key retail managerial career, they eventually made their way back to the house. Her mom was annoyed with them both, Maeva knew that much, but she couldnât stay mad at Maeva for long, not really when she knew exactly why her only daughter never came home â and Maeva made up for it by ironing her dadâs shirt for the wedding and steaming his suit, her momâs dress, and her own dress, while her father shined his shoes to her momâs satisfaction.
There would be enough time to apologise to her cousin on Saturday during the welcome lunch up at Hatfield Farm, where 30 close family and friends would be staying overnight ahead of the wedding on Sunday (with the same 30 staying on the Sunday night). Thankfully the venue was only a 40 minute drive from her family home in Cole Harbour, so she would have plenty of time to make her flight back to Vancouver on the Monday.
She just had to get through the weekend first. One step at a time.
Saturday morning was as chaotic as Maeva thought it would be. Her mom had the three of them loading up her dadâs car like a military operation, checklist on clipboard included, to make sure that nothing was left behind, especially as their part of the family was in charge of the table centrepieces and fairy lights for decorating the reception hall. Once all of that, and their wedding outfits (and shoes and accessories) were ready, along with their overnight bags, it was coming close to midday, and with a picnic basket full of snacks and drinks for the little cabin that the three of them would be staying in, they hit the road.
Despite everything, it made Maeva smile as she recognised the other cars on their journey, all of them making their way to Hatfield Farm like a miniature invasion. The curse of a small town.
It didnât take long to sort out the accommodation keys, and once Maeva had hung up her dress for the wedding (at her momâs request to reduce wrinkles), she sprayed a little perfume and fluffed up her blonde hair before rejoining her parents.
âReady to face the circus?â her dad grinned.
âHonestly,â her mom tutted, elbowing him.
But even she gave Maeva a worried glance.
âIâll be fine. Cole Harbour may be a small town, but itâs not like Sidney can pop up everywhere,â Maeva said, trying to convince herself as much as them. âItâll be good to celebrate Natashaâs happy day.â
âAtta girl,â her dad said gruffly.
Her mom just nodded, threading her fingers through her dadâs to silently lead them across the grounds to the main reception hall, where the welcome lunch was being held. They werenât the last people there, not by any means, but they definitely werenât the first. Maeva could see her cousin walking towards them with a big smile on her face, dressed in a gorgeous peach dress and looking radiant with happiness, and that joy was infectious.
Until Maeva glanced across the other side of the room, that is.
The sound of her breath catching in her throat was enough to make her parents look in the same direction, and her unflappable dad scowled in a way sheâd never seen before.
âWhat is he doing here?â her dad asked lowly, lips pursing as he turned back to look at her cousin.
Natasha glanced over and cursed under her breath. âSid wasnât meant to be arriving until later. I was meant to have enough time to give you a warning, Maeva. Carl invited him but wasnât sure if he could make it â theyâve been friends since they were kids.â
âCurse of a small town,â she murmured, her smile shaky.
She glanced back at him, thankful that he hadnât noticed her looking yet, her heart racing in a way that made her feel sick as she took him in. Sidney looked good, of course he did. Broad shoulders, giant ass, and thick thighs filling out his suit so perfectly, hair dusted with grey in a way that only made him look distinguished. He was standing sideways, talking with Nate (of course Nate was here too) and a couple of other guys from their hometown, and as he laughed, head thrown back, the sound of his ridiculous honking giggle made her want to cry.
She wasnât ready. How could she think she was ready?
Her mom subtly took her hand in hers, squeezing gently to reassure her, only making her dad curse under his breath again.
âHey, youâre my cousin. If him being here is going to ruin your weekend, I can kick him out. I donât care if his name is on the town sign â you are family,â Natasha said firmly, voice still quiet.
Tears stung at her eyes slightly at her cousinâs care, but she shook her head. No, no she had to face being in Cole Harbour at the same time as him at some point. She wasnât going to let him ruin things, not this time. âItâs been five years. Iâll survive.â
Natasha just frowned, taking Maevaâs free hand in her own.
âYou just say the word and heâs gone, okay? I havenât had a chance to be bridezilla yet,â she said, grinning sharply.
Maeva laughed a little wetly, shaking her head again, squeezing Natashaâs hand and her momâs to say thank you silently.
âEverything will be fine. There will be enough people here that you can just avoid him!â her mom said, smiling.
Maeva didnât need to look at her dad as he huffed to know that just wouldnât happen. But still, she had to believe it was possible or she wasnât even going to make it through today. She could avoid him as much as possible â there was only so much her heart could handle.
âDrinks?â Natasha suggested.
âHell yes,â Maeva sighed.
Drinks, then setting up the reception hall with the fairy lights, and bringing in all of the table centrepieces ready for the venue staff to set up in the morning. Then maybe some more drinks. She could handle that.
When she eventually went to sleep close to midnight, her heart was aching in the worst way â Maeva hadnât expected to actually be able to avoid Sidney, but she also hadnât expected to feel his eyes trailing her around the room for the entire day.
And she was dreading tomorrow even more, now that she knew he would be there.
~
Breakfast in the morning was a communal affair. The wedding ceremony wasnât until 2pm, and the staff at Hatfield Farm were putting on a breakfast spread for all the guests from 7-9am, so Maeva was making good use of it, knowing she wouldnât eat for hours after this. Her dress was a flowy one thankfully, so she didnât have to worry about carb bloating â it was one of the reasons sheâd chosen it, along with the fact at it was light and airy enough for the warm weather and a gorgeous shimmery gold colour that complimented her wonderfully. And it didnât conflict with the beautiful lilac and cream wedding colours either, which was a bonus.
Her parents had already eaten and headed back to the accommodation, leaving Maeva to finish her orange juice in peace. Still, being back in Cole Harbour after all this time, surrounded by people that sheâd left behind in her efforts to leave him behindâŠit was almost too much, and she found herself stepping outside for some air to clear her head.
One more day.
She could make it one more day.
But the moment that she heard footsteps walking over to her, she knew her luck had run out.
âI wasnât sure if I was going to be able to get you alone.â
Hello to you too, Sidney.
âWhy would you even want to?â Maeva said, voice cold and polite as she turned to face him.
Sidney just winced. âMae, come on, you know why.â
Oh screw him. Shortening her name like he used to, playing with her emotions like that? No.
âNo, Sidney, I donât know why,â she said shortly, âWe broke up five years ago, almost as long ago as the whole length of our relationship was â so what could you possibly have to say to me?â
âPlease donât be like this. Iâm trying to apologise,â he said, frowning.
âApologise for what, exactly?â she asked, folding her arms over her chest.
Sidney just huffed out a frustrated breath, putting his coffee mug down on a nearby table.
âMaeva, Iâm serious. Iâm trying to be the bigger person here and-â
âAre you kidding me? The bigger person? Our relationship ended because you couldnât commit, Sidney, and youâre talking about being the bigger person like Iâve done something wrong?â she said angrily,
The nerve. What the hell.
âIf you would just listen to meâŠâ
âListen to what? What could you possibly have to say to me?â she spat, cutting him off again.
âIf youâd stop interrupting me then I could actually say it!â he shot back, shades away from shouting.
âUh, guys?â
Maeva looked sharply to the left, seeing Nate standing there awkwardly looking like heâd rather be anywhere else.
âWhat, Nate?â Sidney said shortly, cheeks flushed.
âUh, your mom is looking for you, Maeva,â he explained, grimacing.
âThanks. We were done here anyway,â Maeva said coldly.
âNo weâŠâ
But she just stormed away, not letting Sidney finish, ignoring the hissed conversation between the two men, trying desperately to keep her composure until she was alone. Just as Nate said, her mom was glancing around, and the moment that she spotted her, her face fell.
âLetâs get back to the rooms to get ready, yes?â her mom said, pasting a smile on her face.
It was all Maeva could do to nod, letting her mom usher her along, the fire in her chest from their building argument fizzling away into an all-consuming black hole of sadness. Why would he confront her like that? Why would he want to unsettle her like that after all these years? She would never have thought of him as cruel, but thisâŠthis was the last thing she needed. Those few minutes were everything sheâd been trying to avoid, and the wedding hadnât even officially start yet â how was she going to make it through the rest of the day?
The moment that their cabin door was shut behind them, her mom whirled around to face her.
âMaeva, sweetie, what happened?â
She opened her mouth to explain, but all that she managed to do was start crying, tears streaming down her cheeks. Her mom let out an uncharacteristic curse, cradling her in her arms, only making Maeva sob harder. This is why she never came home. This is exactly why.
She didnât know how long it took for her to calm down, for her sobbing and tears to fade to sniffles, and she was just glad that her mom hadnât changed into her wedding outfit yet.
âGive me the word and I will get laxatives put in his drinks. I know people,â her mom said seriously.
Maeva choked out a laugh, smiling shakily at her momâs attempt to cheer her up, but shook her head.
âIt was stupid. Just stupid. I wish he wasnât here but Iâm not going to give him the satisfaction of leaving,â Maeva said sadly.
âYouâre a braver woman than I am,â her mom said, huffing out a laugh.
âNah, I get it from you, eh?â
Her mom just smiled shakily, giving her another quick hug before pulling back to rest her hands on her shoulders.
âLetâs get ready for this wedding. Have a shower and then Iâll help you with your hair,â her mom said firmly.
Maeva just smiled, nodding her head, heading towards her room as she heard the shower stopping. By the time sheâd gathered her towels and underwear, her dad was back in the room he shared with her mom, leaving her to shower quickly. Leaving her with her swirling thoughts.
Even though minutes ago her blood was boiling with his audacity, her heart still ached for him. Up close the grey in his hair looked even better than sheâd thought, the slight laughter lines around his eyes only adding to his appeal. His voice was a smooth as she remembered, his figure just as broad and overwhelming compared to her slight frame as it always had been. Even his intensity, his emotion, was exactly as she remembered, sending shivers down her spine.
She missed him.
And she hated it as much as she loved it.
She loved him. Even as much as she wished she didnât.
It didnât take her long to do her make up and put on her dress, and she blow-dried her hair to the point where it was manageable by the time her mom knocked on her bedroom door.
âOh sweetie, you look beautiful,â her mom said, voice earnest and sweet.
Maeva just grinned back at her, twirling on the spot to watch her golden dress flare in the mirror.
Her mom laughed, rolling her eyes fondly as she guided Maeva to sit down on the end of the bed. She expertly twisted half of her hair up into an elegant bun, fixing it in place with a couple of bobby pins and a ribbon that matched the gold of her dress, leaving the rest of her hair to flow down her back in blonde waves. It was simple but refined, and she felt pretty the moment she looked in the mirror.
âThanks mom. Letâs do this thing.â
âThatâs my girl.â
~
The wedding was beautiful. Maeva didnât know what else she expected though, if she was being honest. Natasha looked ethereal as she glided down the aisle, her fiancĂ© crying a little when he saw her, and the two of them didnât stop smiling at each other the whole ceremony. Maeva kept her eyes on them the whole time, even though she could feel eyes on her throughout the hour â she knew exactly who they belonged to, but she just couldnât. She couldnât, not at a wedding she knew she would never have.
All the guests moved into the reception hall, sitting at their assigned tables, Maeva sitting between her parents with each of them holding one of her hands like they didnât want her to disappear. She could only imagine what her mom her told her dad about her breakdown this morning, but that was the last thing she wanted to think about right now. All through the wedding speeches Maeva sipped on her champagne, laughing at the appropriate moments, tearing up at her uncleâs heartfelt words, cheering the toasts to the new bride and groom. She could barely remember what she ate when the food came and went, but she dutifully ate under the watchful eye of her mom, making small talk with the other members of their table, answering politely to questions about her life in Vancouver, 6000km feeling even further away than ever before.
By the time the additional guests joined them all for the evening reception, Maeva was well on her way to being overwhelmed, but she joined the circle of people on the dancefloor to watch Natasha and her new husband in their first dance.
Just as the music started, a familiar figure stepped up next to her. Maeva froze, desperately trying to think of how to make a subtle exit, but Sidney gently pressed a flute of champagne into her hand.
âThis is an apology drink,â he murmured. âI should never have lost my temper with you this morning.â
Not here. Not now.
She didnât know what her face was showing as she glanced up at him but Sidneyâs face just looked sad.
âCan we talk after their first dance finishes? Please?â he begged softly.
There was something in his voice that made her façade crack.
âFine.â
She didnât dare take her eyes off of Natasha and her husband for the rest of the dance, sipping the champagne flute, waiting until people started joining them on the dancefloor to slip away, Sidney subtly following her. Just off the side of the venue was a small courtyard, separated from the rest of the outside space by a trellis of flowers, just enough to give them a semblance of privacy.
Maeva put down the glass as Sidney joined her, wrapping her arms around herself partly as a guard, partly as comfort, her ex-boyfriend standing in front of her looking just as overwhelming as he always had.
âThank you for agreeing to talk to me,â he started, smiling a little.
âWhat did you want to talk about, Sid?â she sighed.
âI messed up all those years ago,â he murmured.
No, no she couldnât do this.
âSidney I canât,â she interrupted, shaking her head.
âPlease, please just let me finish,â he begged.
She just bit her bottom lip, glancing away from him briefly to steel herself, before nodding.
âI have spent five years trying to think about what I would say if I ever got the chance to see you again. Five years playing the conversation over and over again in my head, going through every scenario, and right now in this moment, none of it is coming to my head,â he said softly.
That was so typically Sid.
âForget whatâs in your head. Whatâs in your heart?â she found herself saying.
He huffed out a laugh, nodding his head.
âI love you, Maeva,â he said, tears glistening in his eyes.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh god this was the last thing sheâd been expecting.
He still loved her?
âDo you love me too? Is there any chance that you still love me?â he asked desperately.
He still loved her?
Running on pure instinct, Maeva choked out a sob as she leaned up and kissed him, hands clutching at his shirt.
Of course she still loved him.
Sidney didnât hesitate as he kissed her slowly back, cradling her face with both hands, pouring everything into the embrace. Maevaâs head swirled as her blood surged and her heart racedâŠand then a couple of wedding guests stumbled outside too, clearly drunk. They were mostly giggling and falling into themselves, so they didnât notice Sidney and Maeva springing apart, and as they stumbled around the corner Sidney quickly took one of Maevaâs hands in his, breaking her out of her frozen state of shock.
âYou still love me?â Sidney asked hopefully.
âThat was so stupid. I shouldnât haveâŠwe shouldnât haveâŠâ
His face fell.
âPlease donât run away. Please donât leave me, not again,â Sidney begged, interrupting her rambling words.
She couldnât do this. She couldnât do this.
âWe canât just go back to how things were, Sid,â Maeva said sadly, âWeâre different people now, weâve both changed.â
âThen let me get to know you again. And you can get to know me,â Sidney said desperately, âWe still love each other â isnât that enough?â
Maevaâs face mustâve looked as incredulous as she felt, because he squeezed her hand a little tighter, eyes burning with intensity. She remembered that look. It still had the same effect on her, knowing that Sidney was leading up to something heart achingly earnest.
âYou are right, Iâve changed â Iâm not the same man I was before. I made the biggest mistake of my life taking you for granted, letting you go when I shouldâve fought for us, and I regretted it the moment I realised youâd truly left. My stupid pride kept me from reaching out to you in the first few weeks, and when I got over myself, it was too late.â
âSidneyâŠâ she murmured.
âNo-one would tell me where you went. Your parents wouldnât talk to me, or to my mom. Your friends blocked my number. All Taylor could find out was that you were in Cole Harbor for a few months before you left for good and that youâve barely been back since. I searched for you, for any sign of you, wherever I went and it still wasnât enough. I wasnât enough.â
âSidney,â she repeated, tears stinging her eyes.
âI am so sorry, Mae. I love you. I always have â it was always you. It was always going to be you, and Iâve spent five years regretting every single moment of that stupid fight and everything I did leading up to it. As selfish as it is, I can only hope that no-one else has your heart. Can you ever forgive me?â
Maeva swallowed heavily, letting go of his hand to run shaky fingers through her hair in an effort to compose herself. This was everything sheâd ever dreamed of hearing from him and it was also everything sheâd dreaded. Sheâd spent so long in therapy building up her walls, repairing her heart, learning how to heal herself and protect herself from falling into this kind of heartbreak again.
But she loved him.
She loved him so deeply that she didnât know how she could ever stop. Sidney Crosby was so intrinsically part of her that she knew that, being honest with herself, she didnât know what a life without him looked like. It was one of the main things she still talked about with her therapist, her inability to accept anyone new into her heart, and she knew deep down that no-one would ever replace him, not truly.
But was she ready to just fall back into his arms.
âI donât know if I can,â she said softly, and wow wasnât the devastated look on his face heartbreaking? âI want to, Sid, but I have spent years trying to move on from you and I donât think I can handle going through what we did again.â
Sidney let out a shaky breath, smiling sadly as his eyes shined with tears. âThe last thing I want is to hurt you. I justâŠI want to show you that Iâve changed. I want to show you all of the love that I shouldâve shown you five years ago. You deserve that much. You should have someone love you in every single way that you absolutely deserve.â
âSidneyâŠâ was all she could murmur again.
Maybe it was her lack of refusal, or the softness in her voice, but Sidney took one of her hands again, squeezing it gently.
âI know that we have separate lives now. I know that you have created something wonderful for yourself without me. But all Iâm asking for is a chance to start over,â he said softly.
âBut how would that work with you in Pittsburgh and me in Vancouver?â
âYouâre a Canucks fan now?â he grimaced.
Of course that was his priority. Still, she found herself choking out a laugh, shaking her head as Sidney flushed a little with shame. âI havenât watched hockey since I left Pittsburgh. Vancouver was just the furthest I could get away and still be in Canada.â
The look that passed over his face was a curious mix of sadness, regret, and frustration, before it settled into the determination sheâd known for years.
âCan I call you?â
âWhat?â she asked, frowning.
âCan I call you?â he repeated. âIâm still not on social media, other than whatever the team makes us do. Iâm getting better at texting. Emails are so-so. But I would love to talk to you, to hear your voice. I miss you, so much.â
How did he know exactly what to say to make her heart cry out?
âSidney, come on,â she pleaded, trying to ignore the lump rising in her throat.
But he didnât back down.
âTell me no, Maeva. Tell me no, and I will walk away. You know Iâm not that guy â no means no, and if you mean it then I will never bother you again,â he said seriously.
âYou know I canât,â she murmured.
Sidney just let out a shaky breath, squeezing her hand again as a smile hopeful smile crept across his lips.
âSo let me call you. We can start with baby steps. I know you have a life in Vancouver nowâŠbut I just want to be part of it. I wasted five years of my life without you because I was an idiot who didnât appreciate the incredible woman I had â all I want is another chance. Do you love me?â
He really was devastating, wasnât he?
âDo you love me?â he repeated, running his thumb over her knuckles.
âI do love you. I donât think I know how to stop,â she said, feeling like an idiot but smiling anyway.
Sidney just smiled like he couldnât believe his luck, and slowly lifted her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles gently, keeping his gaze locked on hers.
âI love you, Maeva,â he murmured.
He kissed her hand again before gently lowering it back down to their sides, so much emotion in his face that Maeva didnât know what else she could possibly do.
âYou can call me. Iâm making no promises, but you can call me,â she said softly.
The smile that spread across his face made her heart soar for the first time in years.

Oh wait, just wait, I love you like I've never felt the pain, Just wait, I love you like I've never been afraid, Just wait, our love is here, is here to stay, So lay your head on me.

Sidney paced by the window in the Presidential Suite while Evie put on the finishing touches on her make-up. "Explain to me again why I am being banished from the suite tonight," Sidney whined even though he already knew the answer. He walked around the suite that had over the course of the afternoon slowly turned into bride central. Evie's wedding dress hung from a hook near the ceiling. It was carefully shrouded by a sheet with a sign with the phrase âNO PEEKING SIDNEYâ written in large letters. Her accessories were carefully laid out on the dining room table.
Evie walked out of the bathroom, holding her shoes in her hand. âDo you want the long or short answer?â she said as she crossed to him, turned around and waited for him to button her sheer, beaded blouse.
Evie grinned as she leaned back into his body and he wrapped his arms around her waist. âShort answer is because I said so,â she hummed as he continued his kisses.Â
âAnd the long answer?â he whispered into her ear.
She quickly turned around and sighed, âDonât laugh.â He laughed at the sight of her slight pout, then saw the expression in her eyes and then nodded solemnly. âWe started as a hook-up. It was solely about lust and sexual chemistry," she began. He began to interject a comment about the lust he was currently feeling, but the look in her eyes told him that it would be a bad idea. "I know that we have grown beyond that. I know that we have a love that is strong and true.â She stepped forward and intertwined her fingers with his before she continued, âThere is something about it that is so honest and pure about our love." Sidney's face lit up in agreement. "I just want to honor that by doing the traditional thingâŠ." her voice cracked and trailed off, âI know itâs silly because clearly we have fuckedâŠ.A LOTâŠ. but I donât know, it just seems like the right thing to do.â
Sidney held up his hand, "Okay, no argument from me." He placed his hand on her cheek. "Whatever you want," he said gently before he kissed her, "For the next day, you get whatever you want because you are the bride. You are MY bride."
ver you want because you are the bride. You are MY bride."Â
Evie leaned her cheek into his hand and sighed in contentment. Their tender moment was halted abruptly when the duo of bridesmaids and Mateo loudly entered the room. Taylor bellowed, "Out, Sid, out!" Together Sidney and Evie turned to her. "Save the mush for the wedding," she ordered before she added, "Evie's bachelorette party starts now. No boys allowed." Sidney turned to Mateo who shrugged his shoulders. "No groom allowed," she corrected, "Out!"
The day before Evie had been informed that she was going to have a bachelorette party with or without her consent. She could either agree to the low key dinner and drinks or be subjected to the phallic themed event Adriana and Mateo were dying to plan. Evie chose the low key dinner and limited the guest list to her âthree amigosâ posse. Sidney gave Evie a long, smoldering kiss that drew the ire of his sister. "Be safe," he whispered, "I am going to find Nate and Geno. They have a bachelor party planned for me. Text me when you get back to the suite tonight." Evie took his hand and walked him to the door.Â
She pulled him back for a kiss before he left, âEnjoy your bachelor party. Remember our rule.â
âNo strippers,â Sidney smiled, âI will try to let Nate down easy on that one. Besides, there is only one woman in the world I want to see naked.â Sidney tried to mask the need in his voice, but it was evident to anyone with ears.Â
âEwwww, Sid!â Taylor yelled.
Sid looked up and laughed, âSo the thought of me getting lap dances is better, Tay?â
Evie started to push him out the door, âBeso, go ahead and quit antagonizing your sister. She is only going to take it out on me.â Sidney snuck another kiss before leaving. âI love you, Beso- be safe,â Evie called as he walked down the hall. Sidney turned and put his hands to heart and grinned.Â
Evie turned back to face the smirks on the faces of Adriana, Taylor and Mateo. âWhat?â she asked as her cheeks flushed.Â
âQuit mooning over Gringo Boy and let's get wasted,â Adriana smiled.
âAre you ever going to call him by his name?â Evie asked as she gathered her stuff, âHe has a perfectly good name.â
âOnly when he is in trouble,â Adriana laughed, âBesides you never call him that either.â
Later at the restaurant, Adriana and Mateo were doubled over in laughter as Evie spoke. During the course of conversation, the subject of Sidneyâs competitive nature came up. Their mouths dropped when Evie told them how Sidney had hit her with a wayward puck while playing air hockey against Nate. She then followed up with the detailed description of the secret plan to learn to skate before the outdoor game. Adriana giggled, âWait, Gringo Boy caught you red-skated on the ice and you tried to deny it?âÂ
âI would have gotten away with it too if it werenât for that pesky Guentzel kid,â Evie retorted.Â
âWait, so Sid knew before you challenged him to the face-off?â Taylor questioned. Evie went on to explain that he knew about the skating lessons, but not about the face-offs. Taylor groaned when Evie explained how she weaseled out of the locker room in the most delicate of terms. âWhat I want to know is what did you whisper to him before the third face-off? What got him so rattled,â Taylor inquired. When Evie explained that she told him that she wasnât wearing panties, Taylor groaned. âOh My God,â she huffed, âIs everything about THAT between you two?âÂ
âBasically,â Adriana chirped.
Evie grinned, âI canât help it if I have a good coochie that he likes.â
âStop it- I am going to be sick,â Taylor screamed before breaking down into giggles.Â
The gigglefest continued as they left the restaurant and walked down the street. Evie paused when they walked past the tattoo parlor. She turned around and walked back and eyed the neon sign. âHey Bridey,â Adriana, âThe hotel is this way. You canât be that drunk.â
âNo, I am tipsy, but not drunk,â she called back. The three amigos shared a look as Evie opened the door to the tattoo parlor and walked in.Â
Evie tossed in the large, king sized bed. Although it was the same size as her bed at the house she shared with Sidney, his absence made it feel larger. She finally fell into a deep slumber.Â
The sound of the prelude music wafted into the foyer space of the Knox Ballroom. Taylor and Adriana adjusted Evieâs veil before taking their positions for their entrance Evie smiled and took a deep breath. As the doors closed behind the duo, she went to move into position for her entrance, or at least she attempted to move. She tried to lift her right foot and it would not budge. She lifted her dress and saw her pearl encrusted shoes encased in an invisible substance. âOh no,â she thought to herself as she bent down to release the shoe. âCome on, come on,â she panicked, âCome on shoe.â She looked up at the door that had begun to open. âCome on you fucking shoe,â she said in a huff.Â
âEvelyn Rose,â the calm voice chided, âIs that any way to talk right before you walk down the aisle?âÂ
Evieâs head popped up to see her father standing before her. He was dressed in a tuxedo, complete with boutonniere to match the wedding party. âPapa?â Evie gasped, âPapa?â
âYes baby,â he walked toward her. He bent down and released the shoe from its imaginary captor. He stood up and smiled as he grabbed her hand.Â
âWhat are you doing here?â Evie asked quietly, âAre you really here or is it aâŠ..â
âDream?â he answered before she could finish her thought. Evie looked dejected. âI would give anything in the world to be here right now, my darling girl, but itâs a dream,â he replied. âI begged and pleaded to have this moment with you. I pleaded with Them to let me walk you down the aisle one last time.â Evie smiled and offered her arm to him. Suddenly the doors opened and they began the slow walk. She kept her head turned to focus on her fatherâs face. Pride radiated from it. The rest of the world was an out of focus blur, but each of his features was in sharp focus. At the end of the aisle, they turned to each other. He dramatically lifted her veil and kissed her cheek. His voice trembled as he whispered, âThank you, Lord. Thank you.â He stood up and clapped his hands together, âNow letâs try it with just you.âÂ
Evieâs head tilted in confusion, âYou arenât staying?â
âNo, Mija,â he sighed, âYou have to make this walk alone. I canât do it with you.â
Together they walked back to the foyer. She took her spot and he adjusted her veil. He stepped back and gazed at her in her motherâs wedding dress. âYouâre just as beautiful as she was on our wedding day,â he declared, âYouâre going to take his breath away.â
Evieâs head turned to the music that was playing. It was almost time for her cue. Her father turned his head as well. âHeâs waiting for you, Mija,â her father said softly, âWe donât have much time.â
âYou like him, Papa?â she asked hesitantly, âYou approve?â
He stepped toward her, âHe is everything that I wanted for you. I donât have to worry about you anymore.â
âYou worried about me? After you left?â she asked.Â
âYes, every day I worried about who would love you and take care of you. I worried about who would bring you peace. Then you met Sidney and all of that worry went away,â he went on to explain, âNow I can rest in peace.â He gently kissed her cheek and turned to walk away.Â
âPlease stay Papa. I need you to stay with me,â she pleaded.Â
âBonita Mija, you donât need me anymore. You have your Beso,â he smiled.Â
âI will always need you, Papa. I miss you everyday. I try to pretend that I donât, but I need you every day,â she cried.Â
âI know my Evie,â he pulled her into a hug, âBut I am here with you always. I will be with you later when you wake up.â
âNoooooo,â Evie begged, âPlease stay, please. â
âPapa stay!â Evie screamed as she woke up with a start. It took a moment to get her bearings. She was at the hotel and it was the night before her wedding. Instinctively she reached for Sidney, who was not there. She sat up and hugged her knees into her chest. Suddenly, her phone vibrated and she reached over for it.
Sidney: Evie? Are you okay?
Evie cried: NoâŠÂ
Sidney: Do you need me?
Evie: Yes
Sidney: I am coming to you.Â
He hung up before she could properly process the conversation. She had barely made it to the suite entrance when she heard his footsteps pounding on the floor. He was running to get to her. Evie opened the door just as he arrived. He held out his arms and she jumped into them. Her body molded around him like a baby koala bear. Sidney instinctively began to rub her back as she cried into his neck. âShhhhh,â he soothed, âIâm here, Evie, Iâm here.â
âHow did you know?â she asked as he carried her into the bedroom.Â
âI canât explain it,â he said as he sat down on the bed with her firmly still attached. âI was asleep, then I felt a nudge. I think I mumbled something and rolled over,â he described, âThen I heard a voice that said âEvie needs you.â I woke up and called you. When you said you needed me, I came running to you.â
Evieâs eyes grew wide and she leaned back to look into Sidneyâs eyes, âReally? You are not making that up?âÂ
He nodded his head, âWhy would I make that up?â
Evie put her face into the crook of Sidneyâs neck and whispered, âThank you Papa. Thank you.â A look of confusion spread across Sidneyâs face. âWill you stay the rest of night?â she asked quietly.Â
âBut what about the tradition?â he answered as she crawled beneath the covers. He quickly stripped down to his boxers and then wrapped his body around hers then pulled her tight against his chest.Â
âI donât care about the tradition anymore. I need you tonight just like I do every other night. I wonât sleep with you in the other room,â she blurted out.Â
âWhatever you want, my bride, whatever you want,â he kissed her ear as they both fell back asleep.
The following morning Sidney and Evie snuggled in bed and discussed the schedule for the day. They decided to forego the idea of not seeing each other for the rest of the day. The anxiety the separation would cause was not offset by the idea of clinging to an outdated tradition. After Sidney walked back to his room to get dressed for the day, he sent her a text.Â
Penthouse Suite- That evening after the big announcement
Evie rushed into the suite with Taylor and Adriana hot on her heels. Evie yelled to her âglam squadâ who were waiting patiently, âItâs go time. We need to transform me into a bride.â Rachel stepped to assist Evie by unzipping her short white dress.Â
Evie stepped out of it and into her white satin robe. The words âMrs. Crosby est. 12-7-19â were embroidered on the back. Her first name was written on the front left chest. She walked over to the directorâs chair to allow the team to begin their transformation. Taylor and Adriana adjourned to the bathroom to switch out of their party dresses into their bridesmaids dresses.Â
Rachel smiled, âI have something for you before we start.â
Evie looked at her with a confused look, âOkay?â
Rachel smiled and retrieved a beautifully wrapped gift and card. âThese were delivered for you after you went downstairs. I can only assume who they are from,â she smiled. âKnowing him, I figured that you need to open them now in case we need to correct any tear stains.â
Evie took the card and gift and felt the tears forming immediately, âGood call.â She turned to Adriana and Taylor, âCard or gift first?âÂ
âGift,â they said simultaneously.
Evie fingered the gold paper and tag that read âAlways and Foreverâ and smiled. Of course, Sidney would have the gift wrapped perfectly. She gingerly unwrapped the paper to reveal a large framed print.Â
Evie examined the frame that held a star print of the night sky from the date they had met at that fateful Penguins team party. Her fingers slid over their names and the words âOur Love was Bornâ as the tears began to escape. She turned to look at her bridesmaids and held it up to show them. âItâs from the night we met,â she gushed, âItâs the star chart from that night.â Her voice trailed off before she swallowed, âMaybe I should have started with the card instead.â She placed the frame down on the floor as the group collectively wiped their tears. Then she opened the envelope that bore Sidneyâs distinctively masculine handwriting. She slid the card out and read.
Her brows furrowed at the song change. They had spent an entire evening debating and selecting each piece of music for the ceremony and reception. "Who knew that Sidney was so passionate about music?" she questioned as she remembered the intense discussion. Then she remembered how that passion had spilled over into their bedroom that night and felt her cheeks flush. Then she felt the tears threatening to spill over. Evie took the card and fanned her face, âOMG, OMG, OMGâŠ.â Then she looked at the glam team in a panic, âI am sorry. Did I ruin it? Did I ruin the make-up?â
Rachel started to scramble, gently dabbing Evieâs tears as they fell. âEvie, donât worry about it. I used waterproof mascara. Itâs not going anywhere. I may have a word or two for your groom about sending mushy notes though. Can I see it?â
Evie handed over the card and the group gathered over Rachelâs shoulder to read. They responded with collective âAwwwwwâÂ
Taylor, the ever practical one, spoke first, âOkay, enough of this mush. We have seven minutes to get downstairs. I can already imagine that Sidâs pacing the floor. He will lose his mind if she is late. Letâs go.â
Quick work was made of Evieâs make-up touch ups as her tiara was placed on her head. Adriana passed out the bouquets as the photographer snapped pictures. Evie went into the bedroom with the glam team to get dressed. When the doors opened and Evie began to walk out, Taylor and Adriana gasped.Â
Evie looked at them nervously as their jaws dropped.Â
âItâs perfect, Evita,â Adriana said finally before she started to fan her eyes.
Taylor grinned, âHeâs going to die when he sees you- absolutely die.â
Downstairs-true to Taylorâs prediction, Sidney paced behind the curtains that served as a backdrop to the make-shift ceremony altar. Mike and Nate grinned as Sidney checked his watch again. He looked up and asked, âWhat?â
âNothing, Sid,â Nate laughed, âAre you worried that she isnât going to show up? You saw her less than fifteen minutes ago.â
Sidney pressed his lips together. His face bore the same expression he wore during the final moments during a pre-game. His eyes intense and his jaw set tight. He didnât respond to Nate, but continued his pacing.Â
In the suite, Taylor handed Evie her bouquet. âLetâs get this show on the road,â Adriana instructed, âItâs time to get you hitched. The trio left the suite and onto the elevator. The photographer continued to snap candid photos. When Evie started humming âGoing to the Chapelâ the entire crew burst into giggles. When they stepped out, they were greeted by the squeal of a little girl.Â
Evie turned to find the source and her grin grew even wider. âPrincess Evie, is that you?â Caroline exclaimed. Evie nodded and stepped towards the munchkin that she met on Valentineâs Day. âWow,â the adorable brunette said, âYou look like a princess bride.â
Evie crouched down and grabbed Carolineâs hands as the photographer snapped away. âThatâs because I AM a princess bride. I am going to marry my prince right now.âÂ
âIs it your Prince Charming from before?â Caroline asked.Â
âYes, it is,â Evie beamed, âI should go before he thinks Iâve been kidnapped by the Dread Pirate Roberts.âÂ
Caroline looked confused by the reference. Her mother stepped forward, âWe will watch the Princess Bride tonight. Youâll understand then.â Evie gave the girl a hug and continued toward the ballroom. The lobby of the hotel and ballroom halls were crowded with hotel guests. Each of them stopped and stared as Evie walked by. Whispers of âWhoâs that?â ran through the crowd, âIs that a celebrity? She looks familiar.âÂ
Evie was blissfully unaware as she walked with a mission to get to Sidney. However, as she approached the ballroom antespace, her pace slowed. Ahead she saw the doors that had been decorated with Christmas wreaths that matched the floral decor inside. Reality began to sink in. She was moments away from her trip down the aisle and suddenly her heart ached. She thought of her father and her dream from the night before. She blinked slowly as she remembered that she would be making the walk alone and not on the arm of her father. She looked up to heaven and whispered, âPapa, help me. I donât think I can do it without your help.âÂ
âDad?â Taylorâs voice interrupted Evieâs thoughts. Evie looked up to see Troy Crosby standing in front of the double doors. He rocked back and forth on his feet and Evie smiled as she thought about how he resembled Sidney during pre-game anthems. âWhat are you doing out here?â Taylor asked, âYou are supposed to be in your seat.âÂ
âI need to talk to Evie for just a moment,â he replied. He walked up to his future daughter-in-law and smiled. âWow, Sid is going to lose it when he sees you. You look gorgeous,â he gushed. Evie blushed as Taylor and Adriana stepped away to give them a bit of privacy. Troy rubbed his hands nervously as Evie looked on. âUmmmm, I just wanted to check on you before it all begins,â he said with hesitation. She smiled as he continued, âI was just thinking about your entrance. Normally your father would walk you down the aisle, but he isnât here. I just wanted to check that you were okay doing it alone.âÂ
The conversation that Sidney and he had back in Philadelphia had been pressing on his mind all day. He remembered that he had made light of her distress during the outdoor game and Sidneyâs disappointment and frustration. He also remembered his promise to Sidney that he would look out for her in the future. When Evie didnât immediately respond, he continued, âI know that I am no substitute for your father, but if you need me to walk you down the aisle, it would be my honor.âÂ
Evie stammered, âYou would do that? Walk me down the aisle to Sidney?â
Inside the ballroom, Sidney heard the cue for his group to take their positions. Nate entered first, followed by Mike and then Sidney. Once at his mark, he turned around to face the crowd. His eyes scanned the room to take in the scene. He felt his heart rate increase. Instinctively, he searched for Evie but obviously did not see her. In her absence, his eyes sought his parents. Trina sat in the front row, beautifully dressed in her emerald green chiffon dress. Her smile was wide as she watched her baby boy take his position as groom. Sidneyâs eyebrows furrowed as he noticed the empty chair next to his mother. He mouthed to his mother, âWhereâs Dad?â
She leaned forward and whispered, âHe went to check on Evie.â
Sidney tilted his head in confusion before the empty chairs on the other side of the aisle grabbed his attention. The row was empty with the exception of the two chairs closest to the aisle. In those seats, two signs hung
âOf course,â he thought to himself, âOf course he went to check on her.â
Out in the ante space, Troy responded to Evieâs question, âI think that itâs what Sidney would want me to do. What do you say?â Evie turned to Taylor who nodded her approval.Â
Evie whispered, âI would be so thankful.â Troy stepped to her side and held out his arm. She slid in her hand in the crook of his elbow.Â
Suddenly the doors opened and the sounds of Christmas Canon-https://open.spotify.com/track/0O4vuJynWVVdyvoHvZtnk3?si=adef532b356c4c89 floated out of the ballroom.Â
Taylor looked back and then turned to begin her walk down the aisle. The crowd turned to face her. She made eye contact with her brother and they both looked up as the emotions began. She then shared a smile with her mother. When she approached the altar, she took a step to the right to give her brother an unscripted hug. âJust wait until you see her Sid,â she whispered, âItâs everything that you dreamed about.â
"Thanks Tay. You look beautiful," he whispered back before she took her spot. Sidney turned to see Adriana walk down the aisle. She was the picture of poise as she glided down the aisle. Then Sidneyâs eyes widened and then the biggest smile spread across his face. Trina and others noticed and turned to see the cause. Evieâs head peeked around the corner as she watched her best friend walk down the aisle. When the congregation began to turn, her hand went to her mouth in surprise. Then she made eye contact with Sidney and all of the breath left her body. She mouthed the words âI love you Besoâ and pulled back around the corner. A chorus of laughter went through the crowd as Sidney leaned to catch a glimpse of her as she moved back.Â
Mike nudged Sidney, âYou have to get it together, Darrylâ
Sidney laughed, âYeah, thatâs not going to happen. Did you see her? I am going to lose it. I am going to completely lose it.â
âAnd absolutely no one will be surprised,â Mike smiled. Sidney rolled his eyes and began his rocking again.Â
The double doors to the ballroom closed and the wedding coordinator moved Evie and Troy to their marks. She bent down to fully extend Evieâs train.
Troy turned to look at her, âReady?âÂ
âIâve been ready since Sidney told me that he wanted to marry me at Christmas last year,â she grinned.Â
The song that Sidney selected began and Evie turned to face the door. The coordinator held a finger up to hold them in place. https://open.spotify.com/track/440H25G5ApUQu9YIRnGh6L?si=6848c743f0004a8b Evie smiled when the lyrics began and listened intently. Inside the ballroom, Sidney mouthed the words to himself.
It was you when we first met eyes
It was you in the city lights
It was you when I almost lost control
It was you through the darkest times
It was you that would make me shine
It was you that I hold on tight
It's always been you
So let the doors just open wide
'Cause standing there is my whole life
I've waited long enough to finally say, "I do"
And let the people on both sides
See you there and all arise
See us hand in hand
I swear I always knew
It's always been you
Evie whispered to herself, "It's always been you, Beso- always." The doors opened and Evie got her first full glimpse of the ceremony decor. She inhaled sharply and tried to remember to exhale. It was almost overwhelming until her eyes landed on Sidney. He smiled and she felt her knees buckle slightly. Troy provided support and they began their journey down the aisle.
Now it's you walking down that aisle
Now it's you, I can't help but smile
Now it's you staring back at me
Forever to be
Now it's you I see my whole world
Now it's you never been more sure
Now it's you, it's always been you
So let the doors just open wide
'Cause standing there is my whole life
I've waited long enough to finally say, "I do"
And let the people on both sides
See you there and all arise
See us hand in hand
I swear I always knew
It's always been you
It's always been you, oh
So let the doors just open wide
'Cause standing there is my whole life
I've waited long enough to finally say, "I do"
It's always been you
Sidney's mind raced as he watched her walk. "Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry," he repeated to himself. As if on command, his eyes filled with tears. He forced himself to look at his mother who was dabbing tears and looking back and forth between Sidney and Evie. He looked up and wiped his tears before looking back and making eye contact with Evie. His mind went back to Valentineâs night and the last time he lost it watching her approach. When she flashed a smile, he bent over and pressed his hands to his knees. Then he lifted his head to watch her walk. Mike reached over and patted his back, âBreathe, Darryl, breathe.â Sidney inhaled deeply and stood up straight.Â
Troy felt a tug on his arm. Evie pulled him with her as her pace sped up and she raced toward her beloved.Â
Evieâs eyes filled with tears as she walked to her love. Sidney shifted his weight from side to side as the tears flowed down his cheeks. Suddenly, Evie felt a hand on her arm and she stopped. Her eyes went to the source and followed the hand to the arm to the shoulder and finally to the face of Geno. She whispered, âHi Geno, whatâs up?â Sidney craned his neck to see the interaction.Â
âGive these to Sid. Tell him that I said that I cry too when I marry Anna,â Geno leaned forward and whispered into her ear. Beside him, Anna playfully rolled her eyes. Evie took the package of tissues and continued her walk. Smiles spread across the room as Evie practically sprinted down the aisle.Â
Troy and Evie stopped at the end of the aisle and the wedding officiant motioned for the crowd to sit down. Sidney stood motionless, eyes fixed on Evie as she bent down slightly to allow Troy lift her veil over her head. Sidneyâs tears flowed and he no longer wiped them away. Evie wore a smile bright enough to light up the strip in Vegas. She mouthed the words, "Beso- I love you." He inhaled deeply and wiped the tears and whispered back, "Love you the most."
Nate laughed, "You can't lose at anything, can you?" The quip was picked up by the microphone and laughter erupted in the room.Â
The minister cleared his throat and began the ceremony with authority.
Welcome, all of you. We are gathered here today for one of the happiest occasions in all human life, to celebrate before God the marriage of a man and woman who love each other. Marriage is a most honorable estate, created and Instituted by God, signifying unto us the mystical union, which also exists between Christ and the Church; so too may this marriage be adorned by true and abiding love.
The minister smiled at Evie and Troy. He was thrown for a loop by Troyâs presence. He had been told the bride would walk in alone and called an audible. âWho gives this woman to be married to this man?â he asked boldly. Evie visibly flinched and Sidneyâs eyes grew wide. He had specifically discussed skipping this part of the ceremony with the minister in the multiple planning meetings leading up to today. Troyâs eyes darted from the minister to Sidney and finally to Evie. Her jaw clenched almost imperceptibly.Â
The brief moment seemed to stretch out for eternity until Troy spoke in response. âEvie gives herself to be married to this man. She is an independent woman who is no oneâs possession. However, I speak for her father, Mark, and her mother, Vanessa,â he said with conviction. Evie turned her head at the mention of her parentâs names. Troy continued, âThey⊠they would give anything to be here to support their daughter as she chooses to marry my very lucky son. His mother, Trina, his sister, Taylor, and I support their marriage as does everyone in this room.â Troy bent down and kissed her cheek, âI meant every word. Now go make my son the happiest man on earth.âÂ
Evie grinned up at Troy and they shared a moment before she felt Adriana gingerly take her bouquet from her hand. Troy took Evieâs hand and they took a step forward. Sidney stepped toward her as Troy placed Evieâs hand in Sidneyâs hand. Their eyes met and Sidney felt the breath leave his body. It was only after Evie whispered, âBeso, you have to breathe or youâll pass out.â that he remembered to inhale. She handed the package of tissues to Sidney and whispered, âGeno sent these for you. He said itâs okay. He cried at his wedding too.âÂ
Sidney found Geno in the crowd, held up the tissues and called out, âThanks Buddy!â âMon Etoile, you found her dress. I canât believe that you found her dress,â he gushed.Impulsively, he pulled Evie towards him and kissed her firmly before stepping back. Evie grinned and said, âI think we are supposed to wait, Beso. We arenât to that part.âÂ
He stepped forward and placed a hand on each of her cheeks. âOne more,â he said teasingly before leaning down to kiss her with passion and determination. âYouâre everything I dreamed you would be,â he whispered, âMon Etoile, you are a dream come true.âÂ
Mike Sullivanâs voice boomed from the middle of the room, âSid- During the game, cellies come after you put the puck in the back of the net. At a wedding, kisses come after the vows, not before.âÂ
Sidney and Evie turned to face the crowd with a look of surprise on their faces. âYes, Sully,â Sid grinned before kissing Evie again as the crowd giggled.Â
Twenty years into the future, the minister would question the nurses in his well-appointed nursing home, âDid I ever tell you that I married Sidney Crosby? I mean, I didn't marry him, but I performed his wedding ceremony.â The nurses would feign surprise at the story they had heard countless times. âLet me tell you,â he would say wistfully, âIn all of the weddings I performed, there were never two people more clearly in love than those two.â He grinned, âNo, Sidney and his Evie- they were straight out of a fairy tale.â He would smile and nod before fading back into the memory of this night.Â
Sidney and Evie regained their composure as Mateo made his way to the podium after being introduced by the minister. They stood, side by side, watched Mateo as readied himself.
Mateo spoke into the microphone, "Sidney and Evie, I want you to turn around and face your friends and family." Sidney tilted his head and shook it slowly. He had given Mateo free reign in selecting the reading for the ceremony. His only condition being that reading not be "cliche". Now he was beginning to doubt his decision. However, the radiant couple turned to face the crowd.Â
Evie gripped Sidney's hand as her gaze swept across the room. She laughed as she noticed the door to the service hallway opened slightly. In the small crack, she saw the smiling faces of her co-workers that were working the wedding. She inhaled deeply. Not just a wedding- HER wedding. She looked at Sidney and corrected herself- THEIR wedding.
Mateo began speaking.
Evie wiped tears and Sidney kissed the top of her head. He whispered into her hair, "I love you, I love you, I love you. I am going to wear out the words âI love youâ today."
As instructed they turned to face each other. Their hands clung together and they grinned like fools. The minister turned to Evie. While the minister spoke, Evie alternated between rocking back and forth on her heels and bouncing up and down.
Evie, will you have this man to be your husband; to live together in the covenant of marriage? Will you love him, comfort him, honor and keep him, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all others, be faithful to him all the days of your life?
She squeezed Sidneyâs hands tightly and shouted, "I WILL!" Her enthusiastic response elicited laughter from the crowd.Â
Adriana giggled, "Evita, I think they heard you in Dallas AND Nova Scotia." Evie simply shrugged her shoulders.Â
The celebrant turned to Sidney. He immediately answered, "I will."Â
"Sidney, I have to ask the question first, then you answer," the minister replied.Â
"That's my answer," Sidney shot back before the minister spoke again.
âIndulge me and let me officially ask the question,â the minister smiled. It was Sidneyâs turn to shrug his shoulders. Again, laughter spread through the crowd.Â
Sidney, will you have this woman to be your wife; to live together in the covenant of marriage? Will you love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health;and, forsaking all others, be faithful to her all the days of your life?
Sidney waited for a beat for dramatic effect as crowd laughed at delay, "I will. I will. I will."
The minister grinned at the crowd, âLetâs see if they let me get through this passage before they start reciting their vows on their own.â He read from 1 John 4.Â
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. Â This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
The minister smiled knowingly, "Sidney, letâs see if you have more patience with the vows- please repeat after me." Sidney glanced at his parents before returning his attention to Evie. He inhaled deeply.
I, Sidney Patrick Crosby, take you, Evelyn Rose Montgomery, to be my wife to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, all the days of my life: according to Godâs holy ordinance, this is my solemn vow.
His mind was flooded with the memories of their relationship until that moment. The memories of how these vows reflected the actions that they lived every day. He threw his head back as his eyes filled with tears. Honestly, he was relieved that he was able to recite the vows without his voice cracking. He inhaled and exhaled deeply.Â
In the audience, Anna playfully nudged Geno who dabbed his eyes. "Zhenya, darling," she whispered in his ear, "What's the matter? Happy for Sid? So happy that you cry?"
He shook his head defiantly, "Too much dust in the air." She smiled, "Of course."
Sidney felt the emotions subside and looked to Evie. Silent tears streamed down her face. His thumbs moved to wipe her tears. All sense of decorum left Sidneyâs thoughts and the need to comfort her took over. He leaned forward and kissed her tear stained face which caused her to laugh. "Beso, we aren't to the kissing part yet," she joked as he showered her face with kisses. The minister cleared his throat loudly which caused Sidney to retreat.
"Evie, it's your turn," the minister began. She did not wait for the cues and started loudly.
"I, Evelyn Rose Montgomery," she paused. It dawned on her that it would no longer be her name. She was about to officially become Crosby. She smiled, took a breath and continued, "take you, Sidney Patrick Crosby." Her voice cracked but she pushed on, "to be my husband." Sidney squeezed her hands and willed her to continue. She inhaled deeply and said in rapid fire succession "To have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, all the days of my life: according to Godâs holy ordinance, this is my solemn vow." She grinned at Sidney who nodded his approval. He mouthed the words, "Good girl," which caused her to blush.
The minister turned to Adriana and held out his hand. She took the platinum band off of her thumb and placed it in the outstretched hand. He then turned to Mike who turned over the diamond ring to the minister. He prayed:
Bless, O Lord, these rings to be a sign of the vows by which this man and this woman have bound themselves to each other; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Evie took the plain platinum band and placed it on Sidney's ring finger. She looked into his eyes and said confidently, "With this ring I thee wed; with my body I thee worship." A sly grin spread across Sidney's face. A mental image of how Evie worshiped him with her body flashed in his imagination. Evie bit her bottom lip and continued "and with all my worldly goods, I thee endow. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Sidney turned to the minister and gently picked up the large diamond ring. Evieâs eyes drifted to the ring, and she exclaimed, âBeso, itâs so big!â Her mind registered what she just said, and her hand went to her mouth to cover her embarrassment. âI meant the ring,â she continued while the giggles surfaced, âThe ring is so big.â Sidney shook his head and placed the ring on her left ring finger.Â
âWith this ring I thee wed, with my body I thee worship," he paused and grinned. Taylor groaned loudly and Sidney shrugged his shoulders. "And with all my worldly goods, I thee endow. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen" he said confidently as he slid the diamond into place.Â
Evie looked from the ring to Sidneyâs face and back to the ring. He silently waited for a reaction. She contemplated voicing an objection but silenced herself. The ring was a physical representation of his love for her. It made perfect sense that it was big and bold like his love. It was absolutely perfect and her face beamed. "I love it, Beso," she whispered.
Sidney exhaled a breath that he didn't even realize he was holding in. The emotions were beginning to get the better of him. Evie tilted her head and whispered,"It's almost over Beso. It's almost over."Â
They turned to face the minister who began his prayer.Â
Let us pray.
Eternal God, creator and preserver of all life, author ofsalvation, and giver of all grace: Look with favor upon theworld you have made, and for which your Son gave his life, and especially upon this man and this woman whom youmake one flesh in Holy Matrimony. Amen. Give them wisdom and devotion in the ordering of theircommon life, that each may be to the other a strength in need, acounselor in perplexity, a comfort in sorrow, and a companionin joy. Amen.
Sidney leaned over and whispered in her ear, âYou give me so much joy.â Evie giggled and whispered back, âBeso, pay attention. We are supposed to be praying.â
Grant that their wills may be so knit together in your will, and their spirits in your Spirit, that they may grow in loveand peace with you and one another all the days of their life.Amen.
Sidney leaned over again, âI should have asked for the short wedding ceremony. I donât think he is ever going to shut up.â Evie elbowed his side and shushed him.Â
Give them grace, when they hurt each other, to recognize andacknowledge their fault, and to seek each other's forgivenessand yours. Amen.
Evie squirmed and tried to keep focus. Sidney was right. The ceremony was dragging out. The ministerâs voice had begun to take on the âblah, blah, blah, blahâ tone of Charlie Brownâs teacher. How much longer was there to go?
Make their life together a sign of Christ's love to this sinfuland broken world, that unity may overcome estrangement, forgiveness heals guilt, and joy conquers despair. Amen.
Sidney rocked back and forth impatiently. From their seats, his teammates recognized his body language. He seemingly appeared calm and peaceful, but he was ready to spring into action.Â
Bestow on them, if it is your will, the gift and heritage ofchildren, and the grace to bring them up to know you, to love you,and to serve you. Amen.Â
Sidney whispered,âOh, I am going to put a baby in you. Going to do it tonight.â Both of them giggled and tried to restrain themselves.Â
Give them such fulfillment of their mutual affection that theymay reach out in love and concern for others. Amen.
âFulfillment of mutual affection,â Evie whispered, âYou got that? MUTUAL.â
âYou havenât had any complaints so far, Mon Etoile,â Sidney responded.
Grant that all married persons who have witnessed these vows may find their lives strengthened and their loyalties confirmed. Amen.
Troy leaned over and kissed Trina on the cheek. She smiled softly. He whispered, âAlways and Forever, babe.âÂ
Grant that the bonds of our common humanity, by which all your children are united one to another, and the living to the dead, may be so transformed by your grace, that your will may be done on earth as it is in heaven; where, O Father, with your.Son and the Holy Spirit, you live and reign in perfect unity, now and forever. Amen.
Evie looked over at Sidney, âI think heâs done. I think heâs done.â Sidney nodded in affirmation. The minister shook his head, leaned forward and whispered, âYes, I am almost done. You two are incorrigible. Now turn and hold hands.âÂ
They suppressed their giggles and followed instructions. Sidney and Evie looked at each other. Pure, unadulterated love and joy radiated from them. Subconsciously their bodies began to shake with anticipation. Sidney laughed as Evie began to bounce up and down. She looked from the minister to Sidney and back again. Her eyes focused on the minister and willed him to say the words.Â
Sidney and Evie, you have expressed your love to one another through the commitment and promises you have just made. It is with these in mind that I pronounce you husband and wife. You have kissed a thousand times, maybe more. But today the feeling is new. Today, your kiss is a promise. No longer simply partners and best friends, you have become one and can now seal the agreement with a kiss.
Sidney stepped forward and took Evie into his arms. Her hands went to his face to draw him into her. âI thought he would never shut up,â Sidney grinned as pressed his lips into Evieâs lips. The kiss began as firm yet chaste, yet the excitement and anticipation took over. He pulled her closer into his body, as close as they could get with her crinolines in the way. âWe did it, Evie,â he murmured into her mouth, âWe did it.âÂ
The minister tapped Sidney on the shoulder and said, âWeâre not done.â Sidney and Evie groaned in unison.
The minister continued- âGod the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, bless, preserve, and keep you; the Lord mercifully with his favor look upon you, and fill you with all spiritual benediction and grace; that you may faithfully live together in this life, and in the age to come have life everlasting. Amen. Ladies and gentlemen, it is with great pleasure and divine honor that I introduce for the first time- Evie and Sidney Crosby. Those whom God has joined together let no one put asunder.âÂ
Suddenly a loud sound erupted and Sidney paused to look up. âIs that?â he questioned and looked at Evie, She nodded her head yes and they laughed. The Pittsburgh Penguins goal horn and song blared from the speakers. (23) Pittsburgh Penguins 2019 Goal Horn -Â YouTube Sidney held Evie with one arm and thrust the other into the air in celebration. âItâs perfect,â he laughed before kissing her again, âItâs absolutely perfect.â From their chairs, Sidneyâs teammates chanted their names.Â
Adriana kissed Evie on the cheek as she handed Evie her bouquet, âBest wedding ever.â Evie grinned as Sidney grabbed her hand and led back up the aisle. They danced up the aisle, singing along to the song âParty Hardâ.
Outside the ballroom, Sidney and Evie stood, unsure what to do next. In the absence of direction, Sidney pulled her into an embrace. The wedding coordinator peeked from around the corner, âThe photographer wants to get some photos before Evie changes again. Come this way.â They followed her instructions and spent the next few minutes obediently posing for photos. At the end, their cheeks ached from smiling but they could not stop for some reason.
"Hey Crosbys!" Evie turned with a grin. "You have thirty minutes until your reception starts," the wedding coordinator called out,"Evie, don't make me come chase you down."
Sidney turned to Evie with a question in his eyes. She could see the wheels turning in his brain. "Thirty minutes?" He said with a sly grin.
Evie stepped back, "Yes, I have to change into outfit number three of the night. You knowâŠ.. the sexy reception dress for booty shaking."
"EvieâŠ." Sidney growled, "How long will it take for you to change?"
"Catch me and find out " she laughed as she hiked up her dress, stepped out of her shoes and began a sprint to the elevator. He stood, stunned, for a moment before he chased after her. Evie paced in the elevator lobby as he caught up with her. They dissolved into giggles as he playfully pushed her into the elevator when the doors opened. âOhhhhh,is my husband in a hurry?â she laughed as he pressed her against the back wall of the elevator.Â
âSay it again,â he growled into her ear as he nibbled her neck.
âSay what again?â she asked as she watched the floor numbers ascend until they arrived at their penthouse suite.Â
âWhatâs my name?â he demanded as hands went down below her ass and drew her into him.Â
âMr. Crosby, you are my husband now,â she teased.Â
âSay it again,â he pressed into her.Â
âHusband, husband, husband,â she repeated as he bent down and lifted her over his shoulder and carried her to the door. He handed her the room card to unlock the door. When they entered the room, Evieâs glam team looked up in surprise.Â
Sidney placed her down and moaned in her ear, âEvieâŠ.â
She turned to him,âBeso, give me a minute.â
He began to pace like a caged animal as she directed the team to help remove her dress. Their fingers worked frantically to unzip the dress. Evie stepped out of the dress and turned to her team. âGive us ten minutes,â she requested, âWe just need to ummmm, discuss some reception details.âÂ
âEvie,â Rachel smiled, âWe are used to dealing with newlyweds. Text me when you are ready for us to come back.â Evie blushed and nodded. âTry not to be on bottom,â Rachel whispered, âYouâll mess up your hair.âÂ
Evie laughed, which caught Sidneyâs attention, âIâll try.â
The door had barely shut when Sidney approached her. His hand unbuttoning his pants and letting them drop to the floor. He guided her into the bathroom until she was pressed into the counter. It was only then that he took a look at her white boy shorts. Baby blue thread neatly spelling out âMrs. Crosby- You may now fuck the bride" across her ass. As he reached for them, she made eye contact in the mirror. âPull them down- don't tear them, Beso,â she insisted, âI need them for the reception.âÂ
He nodded and pulled them down her legs. He inhaled her scent as he stood back up. âMmmm, is my wife ready for me?â he moaned into her shoulder as he spread her legs with his massive thigh..Â
Evie placed her hands on the counter top and looked back over her shoulder. âI have been waiting my whole life to be fucked by my husband,â she growled, âI canât wait anymore.â It was just the encouragement he needed.Â
Sidney moaned as he thrust into her, âFuckâŠ..you feel amazing, Mon Etoile. I missed being inside your pussy. Itâs so warm and wet for me.â He began a frantic pace of thrusting while placing open mouth kisses on her back. âOh God,â he cried out, âMy wife- I am fucking my WIFE.â They both raced to the edge of the pleasure. The results of the three week sex ban heightened the intensity but also ensured that the journey to their mutual orgasms would be short. The cacophony of moans, groans and random screams of pleasure created a symphony of love. When they were done, they were both bent over the bathroom counter, panting and out of breath. Sidney gently kissed her back, âEvie, are you okay? I wasnât too rough was I? I was a little out of control.âÂ
âMmmmmm no, it was just right,â she said with a smile, âItâs only fitting that the first fuck as husband and wife be as hot and intense as our first fuck.âÂ
Sidney retrieved his boxers and pants and brought Evieâs white satin robe to her. âI love the panties by the way,â he smiled as she pulled her boyshorts up over her bottom.Â
As she pulled on the robe, he instructed her to close her eyes. âI have a surprise for you,â he joked as he stood behind her and pulled a diamond necklace out of his tuxedo jacket. He wrapped the necklace around her neck and she felt the weight of the stones. âNow open your eyes,â he ordered as he clasped it together.Â
Her eyes fluttered open to see the large diamond tennis necklace around her neck. Her fingers immediately went to touch it. âBeso,â she said in shock, âThese are cubic zirconia, right? These are not actual diamonds. Beso, right?â He stared into her eyes in the reflection and shook his head no.Â
Evieâs eyes widened as she examined the necklace in the mirror. âBeso,â she whispered, âI am going to have to put you in spoiling time-out soon.â
âThis was on the yellow list. I hope that you donât mind that I got you one without us discussing it first,â he said tentatively.
âIs thisâŠ..â she spoke softly, âIs this a collar? A collar to show that I belong to you?âÂ
Their relationship danced on the edge of the BDSM lifestyle. Beyond their initial conversation, Sidney and Evie had never discussed the more traditional requirements like contracts and collars. In âthe lifestyleâ, collars were an outward symbol of submission within a relationship. Both of them had placed the concept of a collar in the yellow zone simply because it was an idea that carried a weight of permanence that was inconceivable to discuss, much less place, on the green list at the time. However, if you had pressed either one of them, they would have confessed a desire for a collar but more importantly for a relationship that would warrant a collar. Still, it had not been discussed and Sidney had taken a risk in purchasing such an extravagant example of one.Â
âDo you like it? Will you wear it?â he quizzed softly.Â
âAll the time?â she asked.Â
âWhen we are playing or whenever you want to wear it,â he said. All of the sudden he doubted his gift to her and it began to overwhelm him. âIf you donât want it, you donât have to wear it at all,â he said suddenly. His hands moved to take it off of her neck.Â
âDonât you dare take it off of me, Mr. Crosby,â she said with authority, âI want to wear it. I want the world to know how much you love your princess. I will wear it with pride.â
âYou will?â his eyes met hers in the mirror reflection.
âOf course,â she smiled, âThank you for my gift, Mr. Crosby. I adore it.â
âQuit calling me, Mr. Crosby or we will never make it downstairs,â he laughed.Â
âCan I wear it tonight at the reception?" she asked.
"Of course," he answered.
"Good- now let me get ready," she joked as she pushed him away.
"Yes, my beautiful wife," he kissed her ear.Â
The newlyweds appeared before the coordinator with seconds to spare before their appointed deadline. "Evie," the coordinator commented, "You are right on time."Â
"No thanks to my husband," Evie replied. To the casual eye, they appeared calmed and relaxed. However, Evie's cheeks were flushed and she clung to Sidney for support. Her legs were shaky after their unexpected second round which occurred when Sidney saw how the reception dress hugged her curves.Â
The cocktail hour was in full swing still but the wedding coordinator escorted them into the ballroom where their reception would be held. The doors opened with a flourish and they both gasped.Â
"Oh, itâs perfect,â Evie gushed as they stepped into the beautifully decorated room. Red floral centerpieces highlighted the tables. Accents of green and gold added to the festive holiday spirit. Sidney and Evie held hands as they walked through and examined the details that she had painstakingly selected. Sidney marveled at the magic that Evie was able to create. It solidified their decision to get married that day instead of waiting until the summer.Â
They were then ushered out of the room while their guests moved from the cocktail hour into the reception. They stood together and greeted each guest as they entered the room. The next hour was a blur of hugs and laughter. Each of Sidneyâs teammates good naturedly teased him about his emotional response to Evieâs entrance. Kelsey Rust hugged Evie and gushed, âI guess you got your dream holiday wedding after all. I am so happy that it worked out for you.â As their guests ate their dinner, Sidney and Evie made their way throughout the room. They posed for pictures while they laughed and joked. Eventually, the wedding coordinator gave them the signal to make their exit for the wedding party introductions. Â
Standing in a side hallway, they stood with their arms wrapped around each, bodies pressed together. They rocked from side to side and allowed the joy of the moment to envelope them while the others watched them in bemused silence. When Sidney saw the signal from the coordinator, he whispered into her ear, âMon Etoile- my princessâŠ. Itâs time to go into our party.âÂ
She looked into his eyes and smiled, âCanât wait Beso.â
The music pumped as the wedding emcee announced each person. Nate twirled Taylor around as they entered to the upbeat song. Mike and Adriana followed with Adriana leading him in âLadies and gentleman, here they come. For the first time as husband and wife, Mr and Mrs. Crosby.â Sidney and Evie entered the room to thunderous applause. They walked the circumference of the dance floor and fist bumped the crowd before taking their spots at the top of the dance floor. The wedding emcee then announced Mike for his best manâs speech.
Mike nervously stepped to the microphone and pulled out a folded piece of paper. He looked at Sidney who smiled and nodded. He knew that Mike was not a public speaker. He had even offered Mike a free pass on giving a speech. âNate Dogg can do it if you donât want to speak in front of everyone,â Sidney had offered. The offer was politely and firmly declined by Mike. After everything Sidney had done for him in his life, giving a best manâs speech was a small gift to give in return. He unfolded the paper and began to speak into the microphone.Â
âMy name is Mike Chiasson and Darryl has been my best friend since kindergarten,â he paused and furrowed his brow, âIâm sorry- Sid has been my best friend since kindergarten. I donât think I have to tell anyone in this room what an honor it has been to be his friend. I also donât think I have to tell anyone in this room how much Sid loves the game of hockey. He loves everything about it. He loves to watch it. He loves to talk about it and study it. More importantly, he loves to play it. On school holidays, when everyone else wanted to sleep in, Sidney made the rounds through the neighborhood to get enough guys together to play some street hockey. Itâs just been the way it has been the entire time Iâve known him. Now we all know that his love of hockey has been rewarded with untold success, but you would never know it when you meet him. He is humble and kind. There is no superstar attitude. There is no sense of entitlement. Isnât that right boys?â Mike paused and looked up at the men in the room who had shared the ice and locker rooms with Sidney. He was met with nods of agreement.Â
âI remember an interview that Sid gave when he was, I donât know, maybe fourteen years old. Troy/Trina- correct me if I am wrong. Sid gave the most quintessential Sid quote ever, âI eat, sleep and drink hockey. I mean itâs amazing. Itâs my life pretty much.â Evie squeezed Sidneyâs hand and rested her head on his shoulder as he wrapped his arm around her waist. âFor almost twenty years, that quote was entirely accurate. Sidâs world revolved around hockey. Sure, he made time for his friends and family but there was no mistaking what was Sidneyâs priority. It was hockey- plain and simple. But as we all know that changed last year and we all know who was the catalyst for that change- Miss Evie Montgomery.âÂ
âThatâs Mrs. Crosby now,â Sidney shouted out.Â
âYes, we know Sid- sheâs Mrs. Crosby,â Mike laughed, âEveryone take a shot.â Sidney and Evie looked at each other in confusion. Mike laughed, "Oh, you didn't hear about the new drinking game? Take a shot every time Sidney says Mrs. Crosby or my wife."
"I'm pretty sure we're all going to die of alcohol poisoning," Nate yelled from the other side of the dance floor.Â
Mike pulled out his phone and pulled up a screenshot of a text. âIâd like to read a text that I received in September of last year.âÂ
Sidney- Hey, you busy?
Mike- Not really. Whatâs up buddy?
Sidney- I met a woman.
Mike- Oh? Tell me more
Mike looked up and grinned, âYou all know how private Sid is. In twenty five years of friendship, it was the first time that he had initiated a conversation about a girl or woman. You can imagine my surprise when he led off a conversation like that.âÂ
Sidney- I met her at a team party. She is gorgeous and amazing. Iâve never met anyone like her. I canât stop thinking about her.Â
Mike- You should probably ask her out.Â
Sidney- What if she says no?
Mike- What if she says yes?
Sidney- If she says yes, I am pretty sure that I am done. Sheâs the one.Â
Evie looked up at Sidney in surprise. âWait, was this before the night you came to my apartment after the Taylor thing?â she questioned. Sidney blushed and shrugged his shoulders.Â
Mike continued, âThree days later I got another text from him that simply said âI asked her out. She said yes. Best date of my life. Introducing her to the team Wednesday night.â Next thing I know, Sid is texting less and less. I ask where he has been and the answer is alwaysâŠ.â
âIâm with Evie,â Letang shouted out to complete the sentence.Â
Mike gave a knowing nod and continued, âTwo months later, he told me that we need to get our bucket list trip scheduled for the summer. When I asked why, he responded âI am going to ask Evie to marry me and I canât travel to Europe with you after I marry her.â Fast forward to summer and our trip. Have you ever traveled with a lovesick man? Sidney talked so much about Evie that she might as well have been on the trip. I wish she had been so I didnât have to listen to the constant conversation of âDo you think Evie would like this restaurant? I should buy Evie a gift. We have to get back to the hotel. Itâs almost time for Evie to call.â
Evie stood on her tiptoes and kissed Sidneyâs cheek. âNever again,â she whispered into his ear, âNever again will we be separated that long.â Sidney squeezed her tight and nodded in agreement.Â
âThe new reality of Sidâs world became apparent at the end of summer. Evie moved to Nova Scotia. Suddenly the man who is always first on the ice and last off of the ice is the last one on and first one off the ice. No more hanging to shoot the breeze after a workout. Nope, he had to get back to the woman - the woman who replaced hockey as number one in Sidâs life. He had to get back to Evie. He might not admit it, but the quote has changed. Itâs now, âI eat, sleep and drink Evie. She is amazing. She is my life pretty much.â Evieâs eyes welled up with tears. To hear Sidneyâs best friend make such a bold claim humbled her. She looked around the room and saw their friends and families looking back with knowing looks.Â
âEvie,â Mike smiled, âThank you. Thank you for showing Sid a world beyond hockey. He was remarkable before you. Now with you by his side, he is going to be unstoppable. I have never seen him more alive than he is with you. You bring out the best in him and that is saying a lot. Thank you. Now Sid- all I have to say is that you are one lucky man. Thank your lucky stars you snagged that one.â
âEvery day,â Sidney called back, âI am so lucky she is my wife.âÂ
âDrink up,â Nate shouted out as the group raised their glasses and toasted Sidney and Evie.Â
Then Adriana walked up to the microphone. Evie took one look at her face and braced herself for her speech. She imagined the cutting remarks and jokes that Adriana could make about herself or Sidney. Adrianaâs voice was soft when she began speaking. âMy name is Adriana and I have known Evie for five years. We met in the first year of grad school and became inseparable ever since. When I met her, she was smart and funny. She had a way about her that made me feel at home and completely safe. I had never met anyone like her.â She paused and inhaled deeply. âThen the unthinkable happened and her parents died.â Evie flinched and Sidney drew her closer into his body. âEvieâs foundation was ripped from underneath and something in her fundamentally changed. She handled herself with such grace and poise, but her magic was gone. She behaved the same and if you had not met her prior then, you would have seen nothing but a beautiful and gracious woman succeeding at life. I knew though, I knew. Her magic was gone and she was going through the motions. She was a shell of who she was before.âÂ
Sidneyâs heart ached at the thought of Evieâs pain. It was a part of herself that she kept tucked away. He caught glimpses every once and a while, but the magnitude of her pain hit him like a ton of bricks. His eyes watered and he lowered his head as Adriana continued, âBut that changed last September. She went to a party and came into the office Monday morning with a smile on her face that I hadnât seen in years. It was a glimmer of the magic she had before. Then they went on their first date and there was more of it. Every day with Sidney has brought more of it back to Evie. She is back to being the woman I first met- the woman who was and will always be my best friend. You did that Sidney. Not only you, but your family that embraced her as one of their own from the beginning.â Sidney glanced over to his parents and Taylor who wiped tears from their eyes. âGringo Boy,â Adriana smiled at Sidney, âYou know that I have given you a hard time at every opportunity. I will continue to give you a hard time at every opportunity. But today I say thank you. Thank you for bringing back the light in Evie with your unwavering love. Thank you for giving her the fairy tale because I canât think of anyone more deserving of it than you Evie. You are my best friend, my sister from another mister and I love you more than you will ever know.â Everyone began to raise their glass. Adriana continued, âand Gringo Boy if you hurt her, I will make you wish for the day that you took a puck to the face. Believe me, I will make you hurt so much worse. Got me?â
Sidney laughed at first, then saw the serious expression on her face. He nodded solemnly, âYes maâam- you have my word.âÂ
She smiled, âSee Gringo Boy, I knew that you were smarter than you looked. Raise a toast to Sidney and Evie- a real life fairy tale.â
The wedding emcee spoke as everyone took their sip of champagne. âNow itâs time for the bride and groom to take to the dance floor,â he said excitedly, âI present to you, for their first dance as husband and wife, Evie and Sidney Crosby.âÂ
The wedding band began to play and the female singer started to sing, âAt last, my love has come along.â Sidney wrapped Evie in his arms and led her around the dance floor. She lifted her head and smiled at him. âWe did it, Beso. Itâs all a party from here.âÂ
âWell, one more emotional thing, then we have the party,â he answered. When her eyebrows knitted together in confusion, he added, âI have my dance with my mother.â She nodded in understanding. During the planning stages, Evie had suggested to Sidney that they replace the father-daughter dance with a mother-son dance and he had quickly agreed. They smiled as they glided across the floor, looking every bit the picture of a princess and her prince. They ended the song with a dramatic dip and kiss. Sidney kissed Evie again before going to the microphone. Trina and Troy looked at each other in confusion. He spoke into the microphone, âNow is traditionally the time for the bride to dance with the father of the bride. Evie thought it might be a good idea for me to dance with the first woman I loved since her father isnât here. So Mom.â Sidney held out his hand to Trina. âWould you do me the honor to dance with your baby boy one more time?â he smiled at his mother as she crossed the dance floor to him.Â
The band started playing âForever Youngâ by Rod Stewart as Sidney wrapped his arms around his mother. She smiled and looked up into his eyes, âYou remembered!â When Sid was a baby, Trina would dance around the living room with him in her arms singing the song to him. His little cherubic face would look up with wonder. She carried on the tradition until he was too big to lift in her arms any more. It became their âthingâ to celebrate important life moments. They danced after victorious (and some unvictorious) hockey tournaments. When Pittsburgh won the draft lottery in 2005, they danced again in their living room. Their living room was replaced by Penguin locker rooms for dances to celebrate Sidneyâs three Stanley Cup wins.Â
âOf course, I remembered,â Sidney smiled back at her. âItâs our celebration song.â He bent down and hugged her tight. âYouâve always been there for me. I wouldnât be me without you,â he whispered into her ear, âI love you Mom.âÂ
Trina choked back tears, âI am so proud of you Sid. You found a true gem in Evie. You are going to make her so happy.âÂ
âShe is going to make me so happy. She already does,â he glanced over at Evie who stood watching dabbing tears from her eyes despite the smile on her face. Sidney started to step in her direction when he saw his father and sister crowd gather around her. Trina looked back and smiled before looking into Sidneyâs face. Tears threatened to form as Sidney sighed, partly in frustration at the intensity of emotions he had felt all day. The frustration was superseded by the joy of watching his family embrace Evie truly as one of their own. It was official now, but it had been that way since the beginning. âThank you Mom,â Sidney said softly, âThank you for loving her as much as you love Tay and me. It means the world to me. She means the world to me.âÂ
Mateo watched from the other side of the dance floor with Vincent by his side. Finally, he handed his drink to his boyfriend and marched to Evie. âHey,â he said softly as she greeted him with a hug, âI know I am not your dad, but I feel like someone from your family should dance with you. I know that Abuleo and my dad hurt you, but you are the closest thing I have to a sister.â Evie looked at him, kissed his cheek and allowed him to lead her to the dance floor. Sidneyâs eyebrows raised when he saw them begin to dance. A huge smile spread across his face as he saw the joy written all over Evieâs expression. The band transitioned from the slow ballad of âForever Youngâ to the disco classic âWe Are Family.â The two couples separated and created a small circle to dance. Evie was the first to break the circle to go grab Taylor and Troy to bring them into the circle. Sidney went to go grab Adriana. The action continued through the wedding party and guests until almost everyone was out on the dance floor. The band began to play âUptown Funkâ and the party kicked into the next level. Â
The next three hours were a blur to Sidney and Evie. Occasionally, they would get pulled in different directions. Within minutes, Sidney would shout into the crowd, âWhereâs MY WIFE?â and hunt her down. Each time he found her, he would exclaim, âMrs. Crosby- there you are!â Then he would scoop her up and spin her around while she squealed with delight.Â
When it came time to cut the cake, Sidney reacted in horror to the rowdy chants of âsmash it, smash it,â as he went to feed Evie. Instead choosing to gently feed her and follow it with a kiss. Evie, on the hand, was slightly more cheeky by dabbing frosting on his nose and licking/kissing it off.Â
By the time that the band played âWobbleâ, the crowd was liquored up and ready to shake their collective asses. Everyone pulled out their phones to video the usually button-ed up and reserved captain dropping low and wobbling with the crowd.Â
When the wedding coordinator approached Sidney and Evie to let them know it was time to start saying their goodbyes before their exit, their friends loudly protested that it was too soon to shut down the party. The coordinator looked to Sidney and Evie who said in unison, âKeep it going. Weâre going to leave, but if they want to keep partying, then keep it going.âÂ
âAll right,â she said mentally calculating the additional cost.Â
Sidney read her mind, âI donât care about the extra money. Keep the party going until they want to stop.â Then he looked down at Evie, âBut I am taking my wife to bed.âÂ
âSid,â Geno joked, âI beg you. I canât take any more shots.â
Sidney looked over and smiled a lopsided smile, âIâm sorry, Geno, what did you say? I was too busy looking at MY WIFE.â Geno playfully punched him and went to the bar.Â
The band announced that while the party was continuing, it was time to line up for the bride and groomâs exit. As the crowd exited the ballroom, Sidney took Evieâs hand and led her to the dance floor for one last dance. He pulled into his arms as the song began.Â

Evie rested her forehead against Sidneyâs chest as they swayed slowly. The many shots and drinks were catching up with them and they clung to each other for support.Â
Sidney surveyed the room and sighed, âIt was a great party- wasnât it?â
Evie nodded her head, âThe best party ever.â
Sidney looked at her and kissed her forehead, âWas it as good you dreamed it would be?âÂ
âBetter than my dreams,â she smiled up at him.
âMmmmm,â he half-hummed, âI have one more surprise for you, Mon Etoile.â
âYou do?â she grinned, âI have one more for you too.â
âLetâs go see your surprise,â he kissed her gently before leading from the dance floor.Â
At the door, she turned around for one last look. âBeso, Iâll remember this night forever.âÂ
He pulled her hand and said, âWait, there is more.â
Together they walked through the banquet area to the outdoor patio where their guests had gathered. The wedding coordinator handed Sidney a faux fur wrap that he placed around her bare shoulders. He then led to the edge of the patio and subtly gave the signal. A loud whistle sounded as a firework streaked up into night sky and exploded loudly. Evie's eyes widened and she shrieked with joy. âBeso, what did you do?â She asked.Â
âI wanted the night to end with a bang,â he laughed as the night sky lit up with colorful explosions. Sidney moved behind her and wrapped his arms around her. He spent half of the time watching her face, full of delight.Â
She looked back at him, âThis is the bang we are ending with?â
âSorry- the party end with a bang,â he corrected himself.
âMmmmm, better answer,â she kissed his cheek quickly and returned her attention to the firework display. As the show end approached, the wedding coordinator lined up the guests in anticipation of the sparkler send off.Â
Sidney guided Evie to where the wedding party gathered along with his parents. Hugs and goodbyes were exchanged. Adriana playfully poked Sidney in the chest and sloppily asked, âDid you enjoy your surprise, Gringo Boy?
Sidneyâs eyebrows shot up, âSurprise? What surprise?â
Adriana shouted at Evie, âYou haven't shown him the surprise yet? Why not?â
Evie shot her a look and hissed, âShhhhhh, not yet.â
Adriana covered her face in embarrassment, âI am sorry, Evita.â She looked over at Sidney who was trying to follow the coded conversation. It was proving to be a difficult task given his current sobriety level. Adriana shouted to him, âForget I said anything, Gringo Boy. I am drunk as fuck from all the shots.â Sidney was pretty sure that there was something that he needed to investigate but decided to simply smile and nod.
At their signal, Sidney grabbed her hand and led her through the archway of long sparklers and into the awaiting horse drawn carriage. They turned and waved before the horses started walking slowly. The carriage turned at the end of the block and made the short walk to the hotel loading dock. An open door waited for them. Evie took Sidneyâs hand and led him through the winding hall to the service elevator. They collapsed against the back wall of the elevator as it made its ascent to the penthouse. When they entered the room, almost all signs of the glam team had been removed from the suite. Her ceremony and engagement party dresses were hung carefully in the closet. Sidneyâs gift and card leaned on the bar top.
The only remnant that remained was the large packet of makeup removers that sat on the bathroom counter along with a small clear box to hold the bobby pins from her hair.Â
Evie took off her heels and groaned in relief as her bare feet hit the carpet. âOh God, my feet hurt so bad,â she whined as Sidney unzipped her dress and handed her robe. He grinned as he read the back of her boy shorts again. Evie slowly walked top less through the suite into the bathroom as Sidney hung up her dress. He then undressed slowly, repeating her groans of relief as his shoes came off. He then joined her in the bathroom and observed as her hands searched for the dozens of bobby pins that held her updo in place.
âHere,â he waved her off, âLet me do this. You do the make-up.â She nodded silently and began her assigned task. They worked in quiet contentment. Every once in a while Sidney would bend down and kiss the top of her head or her bare shoulder. âYou look beautiful, Mon Etoile, my wife.â She would turn her head to find his face and he would reward her with a soft kiss.Â
She laughed as she heard his stomach rumbling. âHungry?â She yawned. He nodded yes. She thought for a moment and grabbed her phone. Based on the time, the hotel kitchen would have just closed for service. Her face scrunched up. She was sure that they could call and they would oblige her request. She decided on an Ubereats order when there was a loud knock on the door. Sidney looked at her for an answer. When she shrugged her shoulders, he handed her the robe and headed toward the door.
He opened it slowly when Adriana and a team from the hotel entered the room with several carts. Sidney and Evie stood in silent surprise as the carts of food were unloaded onto the table. All of the food from the wedding was laid out, including multiple pieces of cake. Adriana smiled,âI figured you didn't eat much at the party so I had them set food aside for you to eat.â
Evie suddenly burst into tears, âA- thank you. We just realized how hungry we are. This is the best surprise.âÂ
Adriana pulled her best friend into a tight hug, âAnything for you, Evita. Go wash your face and get ready to eat.â
She turned to face Sidney, âWalk me out?â
He nodded his affirmative answer and they walked out together. He whispered, âEverything set for tomorrow morning?â It was her turn to nod yes. âGreat, what time do we need to be down there?â He asked.
âAim for 10:00 but definitely by 10:30,â she responded. She paused at the door and smiled at him.
âThank you Adriana,â he said quietly, âWe couldn't have done it without you. Can you make sure everyone gets their gratituities tonight or morning? Crap, I guess it is morning. Just make sure they get them.â
He saw Evie reappear from the bathroom, wearing her robe. Adriana made her exit. Evie made a plate, stacked high with food as Sidney poured her a glass of sparkling moscato. She took it from him as he made his plate. Evie then took her plate and made a makeshift picnic on the large king bed. Sidney followed and they sat facing each other. It was quiet other than the soft moans of appreciation as they ate. The food was unpretentious, yet delicious.
Their eating slowed and the yawns began. Evie took the plates and placed them in the other room. When she returned, Sidney had curled into a ball. His eyes fluttered open and shut. Evie took off her robe, revealing the white satin baby doll nightgown. She crawled next to Sidney and backed herself into his embrace.
âI thought the night was going to end with a bang, Beso? she teased.
âTechnically, itâs morning,â he quipped as he pulled her into his body. âThanks for the surprise by the way.â
âOh that was Adriana's surprise, not mine,â she yawned.
âI want my surprise, wifey,â Sidney nipped at her ear.
âYou'll get your surprise in the morning when you bang me, hubbyâ she wiggled away from him.
âWe're officially a boring old married couple, Evie,â he yawned, âI am too drunk and tired to properly consummate our marriage.â
âMr. Crosby, we consummated twice before the reception. I think we are good and consummatedâ she yawned in return. âBesides we have a lifetime now. You belong to me and I belong to you.â
âAbsolutely,â he kissed her cheek, âI love you, Mrs. Crosby.â
âLove you most, Mr. Crosby,â she said as she drifted into dreamland.

sid to a furry friend's rescue!
florist!reader gets flustered during sid's calendar shoot
parents mentors for the day
chief crosby's got a date... and its not with florist!reader
... was in a bit of a silly goofy mood, forgive me (and be sure to read the endnotes!)
gif from @littlemessyjessi
This is the last thing Sidney Crosby imagined he'd come home to: another man settled in his chair.
His cat is curled in the intruder's lap, and said intruder's hand is curled over your knee. And Sidney's soupâhomemade and hand-deliveredâsplit in bowls between you.
"Thought you didn't need a babysitter?"
Sidney watches the gleeful expression wilt on your pretty faceâcolor drained like his bank account succeeding the egregious bid he matched to make bailâwith equal measures of self-satisfaction and self-contempt.
"I-I didn't, I justâ"
"Settle down, Chief," the ranger laughs. "I knew our little lady here was feeling under the weather, so I thought I'd stop by after my patrol shift and keep her company while you were indisposed."
Sidney glares into the bright cerulean eyes of one Anthony Beauvillier, a park ranger in the Atlantic Coast Uplands region.
If memory serves, he was recently transferred from Waverley to Blue Mountain but resides in Peggy's Cove. This is a 50-minute detour.
In the opposite direction.
The Fire Chief's jaw is painfully tight, his blood scalding. If it were't for his, albeit dwindling, sense of self preservation, Sidney would've marched up those two stepsârecently refurbished at his hand, might he addâto forcefully remove the park narc's grubby paw from your body.
Mercifullyâfor all involved parties, you do so shortly and of your own volition before joining Sid in your driveway.
Guilt smeared over your sickly features, your mouth parts, an explanation hot on your tongue, but all that comes is a grizzly cough that stings Sid's chest just hearing it. Despite his vexation, he's patient with you; he owes it to you both to wait it out. He hopes this is just one big misunderstanding somehow.
But, before you're able, the absolute last person Sidney wants to hear from pipes up.
"Resting, ma biche. You're meant to be resting," Tito attempts to coax you back onto the porchâback to his sideâwith an outstretched, up-turned hand.
(my doe / my darling â reminder: see end for important notes!)
Not as quick with his French as he'd like to be, he growls at the perceived insult. However, rather than running his fist through the opposition's teeth in your honor, Sidney defiles it.
The park ranger, and everyone else who happens to be out and about tonight, are treated to an unexpected eyeful of their Fire Chief's innermost feelings rushing to the surface. They pour into your mouth with reckless abandon, unconcerned with his public image or the utter lack of privacy; this kiss could be broadcast on the Nightly News for all he cares.
All that matters to Sidney Crosby is making his intentions known, and crystal fucking clear. Staking his claim is just a bonus.
"Well, it looks like my work here is done."
At your dazed expression and Sid's bewilderment, Tito stands from the rocking chair with a genuine smile fixed on his face. As he deposits evergreen Stetson atop his wind-swept hair, he pauses.
"Y'all have a nice night," he winks with a tip of the brim, bidding you farewell before slipping into his government-issued Ram.
As gravel crunches under the vehicle's wheels, gears click into place behind Sidney's burnt umber eyes, now gleaming with clarity.
"Nate and Emmy." â Statement, not a question.
"Please, don't be angry. They just wanted to help because... because I didn't believe that... y'know." You gesture to the sliver of space that still separates you, a bashful little smile pushing up your feverish cheeks.
He couldn't find it in himself to be ticked off about your best friends' not-so-harebrained schemeâwhich, honestly, deserved more credit than he would ever be willing to give itâif he wanted to. Not while standing so close he can smell the PEI tulips you've been elbow-deep in all month, and definitely not having tasted the whisper of herbal tea lingering on your tongue.
Smirking, he closes the gap with a gentle tug.
"Oh, I know." Voice dropping to a thick hush, his lips hovering a lick above your skin, "D'you believe it now?"
The pinkish skin crinkles around his warm eyes as you pretend to think.
"I could do with a little more... convincing," you ultimately quip. "But, only if you're up for the tâ"
The remainder of your cajoling is overtaken by a fit of giggles as he corrals you up and across the porch. The front door slams shut with a satisfying air of finality. Though, not before little Ember slips in with you.
Chief Crosby was thorough by nature, and he'd be damned if he didn't dedicate the evening to dispelling any and all doubts threatening to take root. Feigned, or not.
â
gotcha! teehee đ sid really said sick germs?? no match for my LOVE!!! ALSO! tito anon, this ones for you bbyyyyy đđđđ
***** 'ma biche' was chosen because its typically humorous and rarely intended seriously, + can be considered majorly outdated (even by 60s sitcom standards)âand its not always romantic! ... it also sounds a lot like an english insult, hence sid's reaction lol (at least, according to my french-canadian grandmother who remains very confused by my random call for a french lesson on infrequently used terms of endearment lol) *****

Sidney Crosby - cozy (SMUT)
Sid sneaking out of bed before dawn didnât wake you. Neither did him getting ready or making his breakfast. In fact you were still asleep when he came back from training.
You looked cute, he could admit that. At some point you had rolled over onto his side and buried your face in his pillow, blankets piled high in your little nest.
He felt a little bad waking you from your slumber, but you couldn't spend all day sleeping. Sid spent a good while staring at the kitchen cupboard trying to figure out which one of your mugs he should pick before settling on a novelty one shaped like a pumpkin. The cat came running at the sound of the coffee machine, winding through his legs and yelling up at Sid. He opened another cupboard, one of the top ones you never reached for, and pulled out a suspiciously empty treat packet but for sneaking him a couple.Â
By the time the complicated concoction you like to call coffee was done, he had curled up in his bed on the living room windowsill, watching fat raindrops roll down the glass. Sid looked at him before picking up the mugs â your fancy one and his plain oneâ and makig his way back to the bedroom.
He put the mugs down on his nightstand, opened a window to let the fresh air and the sound of rain in, and then slid back under the blankets with you. Sid could feel you cuddle up to him immediately. He didn't even need to do much. Petting your head one, two, three times was enough to have your blink awake, body contorting into a big stretch before you realize he was there.Â
âMorning.â You mumbled before a yarn interrupted you. Cute.
âClose.â He pressed a kiss to the top of your head where his hand had been. âItâs just after 10.â
âOh.â
Not wanting to see you upset right after waking up he leaned over to grab your mug. âCoffee?â
That brought a smile to your face. âYes, please.âYou happily accepted the mug, bringing it up to your face straight away. âThank you.â
Sid loved moments like these. The gloomy weather, a good cup of coffee, you.
âDo you just want to spend the day in bed?â
It wasn't often that he allowed himself the luxury of staying in bed all day but today just called for it. He had already spent the morning training so he wasn't completely lazy at least.Â
âThat sounds perfect.â
The two of you spent the rest of the morning just cuddling and talking and enjoying each other's company. For lunch you ventured out to the kitchen to grab food, then brought it over to the couch and ate while catching up on your shows.
Outside the rain picked up but inside the mood had settled. After lunch the two of you headed back to the bedroom. You both wanted to get some reading done but he couldn't help but watch your ass as you bent down to pick up the romance you were reading. At least he managed to adjust himself and pick up his own book before you climbed back in next to him.
Sid was in the middle of reading about an English regicide when you began pawing at his stomach, dangerously close to his dick. He lowered his book just enough so that he could look at you. âCan I help you?â
âDo you want to⊠I mean⊠I feel empty. And I wanted to know if you wouldâŠâÂ
Your hand dipped down to cup him through his sweatpants but Sid would have understood what you needed from him even without it.
âNeed me to fill you up?â
âPlease.â
He leaned away to put his book down, growing hard annoyingly fast. Your own book laid sprawled next to you, page down next to your sleep shorts.
You waited for him, melting into the bed the moment his full attention was on you. Sid wasnât surprised to find you already wet when he touched you. The sighs and high little noises that left your mouth were so pretty until you decided to bite your lip to stop them from escaping. He didn't toy with you for long, thumbing at your folds for a moment then moving along to your clit. Sid didn't want to tease you when you had asked him to fill you, so he gave you one of his fingers as soon as he felt you were ready. A second followed soon after. By the time he had worked you up to the three he usually liked to prep you with, you didn't hold back your moans anymore.
âReady?â
He tried his best not to feel smug when instead of answering him verbally you just nodded frantically and pulled him into a kiss. He indulged you for a moment but stopped when he felt like he was getting too worked up.
âOn your side.â He ordered playfully, chuckling when you whined in response.
âCome on.â Iâll keep you full and you keep me warm.â
Figuring out a good position for you two didn't take long. Sid slid inside you slowly, making sure to be gentle as he filled you up. It would have been easier if you'd stop wriggling though. Once you found a comfortable position you picked your book back up and Sidney reached for his, trying not to move too much. This wasn't about getting off for the two of you. It was about comfort. About keeping an ache at bay.
You spent the next hour or so reading your own books, connected but dedicated to your separate literature. Sidney liked that he could do this for you, that you felt comfortable enough to ask for this. He also liked the feeling of your warmth surrounding him, the subconscious little squeezes around his length when something exciting was happening, the way you pushed on your lower stomach as if you could feel him even though he wasn't that big and you weren't that small.
He had asked you about it after your first few times, wanting to know what made you want it. It just feels nice, you had told him, warm and full and like I can just turn my brain off for a while.
Rain continued to pelt against the windows.
Sid knew you couldnât wait much longer when you started to squirm and grind back against him. Cockwarming didnât always lead to sex but sometimes it just wasnât enough and you needed him to take care of you properly. But even though he could recognize your neediness he wouldnât give you anything until you asked for it.
It took you twenty more minutes of sneakily trying to fuck yourself on his dick before you gave in.
âSid. Please.â You whined, pressing your body back against his. âI need more. Need you.â
He didnât give in immediately, instead putting his book down and taking a moment to just watch you desperately moving against him. Heâd always give you what you asked for even when he liked to tease you.
It was easy for him to roll on top of you, forcing you to move with him until you laid on your stomach, pressed flat to the bed with him looking down on you.Â
You gasped at the movement but that quickly turned into another whine when you realized he wasnât moving. You couldn't even move back because his hips were holding yours in place. He was filling you, but not in the way you needed.
Finally he started to move, slowly pulling out before fucking back in roughly. A single strong thrust that had you clutching the sheets, waiting for more.Â
He leaned down, his strong chest warm against your back through both of your shirts, and pressed a kiss against your shoulder blade.
âPlease.â You begged again.
Sidney liked to tease but he wasn't cruel, if you wanted to be fucked he wouldnât deny you that pleasure.
He started fucking you in earnest, building up a rhythm until the sounds of your bodies connecting started to rival those of the rainstorm outside.
Sid let you muffle your moans even though he preferred to hear them. The sight of you hugging a big pillow, clutching it to your chest and burying your sweet head in it to quiet yourself down, did things to him you would need to explore later.
Following the line of your body further down he could see himself fucking you. The way you enveloped him, your body moving whenever he thrusted into you. Sidney felt himself getting closer to an orgasm. Not wanting to come yet he slowed down his thrusts, choosing to focus on strength rather than speed. Your whole body moved on the bed every time he entered you, putting those glutes to good use.
He didn't realize how close you'd been until you tightened around him, screaming into your pillow as you came. Sid continued fucking you through your orgasm, shallow thrust and deep grinds to carry you through without overwhelming you; all while he was still chasing his own hight but not as frantic as he would have before.
He pulled out âslowly, carefullyâ after you stopped shaking, content to just jerk himself the rest of the way and come across your ass when you turned around beneath him.
You looked so beautiful, wrecked in the best way, with messy hair and the lines of the pillow pressed into your skin. Sid wanted to trace them but he held himself back.
âYou donât have to. You can⊠inside.â You smiled up at him wide eyed.
Sid groaned as he buried his cock in you and his head in the crook of your neck. It didnât take him long to follow you over the edge. Fucking back in as deep as he could, he came, muffling his moans against your skin.
The two of you basked in the afterglow for a little while before Sid convinced himself to leave your warm bed and get a washcloth to clean you up. He had just returned to you when the first grumbling started in the distance.
By the time the rainstorm outside had turned into a full thunderstorm the two of you had gotten dressed again and were about to snuggle when you remembered something.
âCan you open the door so that Mav can get in if he gets scared?â
He loved his cat, he really did, but the allergy meds only went so far. The bedroom and his gym were the only off limit areas without cat hair everywhere.
âYou know-â
You cut him off. âI know itâs not his first thunderstorm but what if he gets scared?â
It wasnât a fight he would win.
Groaning, he got up, gathering his blanket and pillow before walking over to the door.
âWhat are you doing?â
âHe canât sleep in here with us.â It was a rule where Sid put his foot down. He quite liked being able to breathe, thank you very much. âBut we can go out there with him.â
After he dumped his blanket on the couch, he returned, finding you in the same position he left you in.
âI canât walk.â You gestured to your legs; they were no longer shaking but Sidney knew all too well what he could do to you.
Instead of responding verbally he just scooped you and your blanket up before making his way back to the living room. He dumped your comfy heap on the couch and got ready to settle in next to you when a tiny meow under his blanket caught his attention. Apparently Maverick had already gotten comfortable in his new hiding spot.Â
Sid let him have it, sliding in next to you under your blanket instead. The three of you could just spend the rest of your bed day on the couch.

We have a problem: why am I watching this sex scene again?
Ah. Sex scenes. You wild wild beast. The crossroad of many discourses and analyses and opinions and essays and now, here I am, a mere casual ww2 rpf fan, throwing my own hat to the ring. In this blog post I'm going to talk once more about sex scenes -- two in particular -- and why the eff one of them matters, making the ww2 rpf more compelling and the other did not.
Disclaimer: Whether or not sex scenes are needed in media in general or the right way to implement them across the vast spectrum of art is not part of this discussion. Please keep in mind I'm trying to complain about the writing decision in the small scope of the HBO War shows.
I have discussed the problem with the Crosby/Sandra plot line in a previous analysis here. But I think the problem with it requires another (and maybe a third) write-up. Here, I want to talk about why the tiny sex scene between Crosby and Sandra in episode 7 is a waste of screen time.
So, we have the sex scene in MOTA episode 7. It is somewhat explicit and it was clear it is consensual and that the people who are fucking is very into it. In comparison to other sex scenes in HBO War fandom, it doesn't exactly stands out to me with just the imagery of the act (of course this is a personal opinion, whether or not I find a sex scene hot or bad or corny or lovely or [insert adjective here] is not universal).
However, my problem with this sex scene between Crosby and Sandra is that it doesn't matter to the story.
After getting it on with Sandra, and then after she left him, Crosby never talked about this affair in anyway. Not over the narration, expressing some kind of sentiment over it, not with Rosie or any other guy, so me, the audience, have no idea what he think about it or how he might be affected about it. We didn't know what Sandra think or feel about it either because her scenes are about her spy works and that's it.
You might say: well he doesn't have to tell us how he feel if the show can demonstrate to us the same thing.
Yet, MOTA never did that. Furthermore, the show never portray the sex between them matters to the characters beyond getting their rocks off. And then, the sex doesn't matter to the theme of the episode nor the overall theme of the show either. It's just something that happened.
(Sad to say that maybe this sub-plot distracts me from the rest of episode 7 and 8)
This might be consider 'realistic'. In real life, people can have sex just for the joy of it. Which is true, but in a drama mini-series, the choices to include or exclude details must take in consideration whether what is on screen is valuable to the story the show is trying to tell. Why are they including this sex scene instead of the hundred other real life details that don't make the cut? We don't have a training montage for the pilots, we never learn how Quinn and Bailey get back to base from Germany, we never have the D-Day invasion sequence,...
Let's have a comparison to another sex scene.
In The Pacific episode 3, Sidney Phillips met Gwen in Melbourne and started a romance with her that ended in them having sex before he got shipped back to Pavuvu. Personally for me, it wasn't an awesome sex scene either. Both Gwen and Sidney were awkward, they kissed and the entire thing ended with him kissing her bare shoulder.
But what truly matter happened latter. When Eugene arrived in Pavuvu and reunited with Sidney, he asked Sidney about what combat was like. And to answer this, Sidney mentioned him sleeping with Gwen not to brag about his sexual conquest but to make a comparison with the brutal battles he survived.
Despite the fact that the two of them grew up together, in just a small amount of times, Sidney have been through things and done things Eugene hadn't. All of that (both combat and his brief romance with Gwen) had changed Sidney to the point that Eugene could not longer connect with him. There was now a chasm between them. Eugene looked at his friend and tried to understand him but couldn't. There were things that must be experienced to be understood.
And then, Eugene himself went through life-changing events. The war changed him so much that when he returned to Mobile, he once again couldn't connect with Sidney
Or his brother (who was in the Army and was in the euro theatre) -- another person who had gone through the war himself.
Both Sidney and Eugene's older brother had returned home before him while Eugene had just came back, fresh off the board with his mental wounds, and it showed the chasm had formed between him and these two men who supposed to shared this brutal experience with Eugene.
In fact his brother specifically mentioned how Eugene is still a virgin, which highlight further how he was 'missing out' on that particular experience that both these men have.
And this all started when we were still following H company and witnessed Sidney and Gwen having sex. That small thing compounded over time. It snowballed into all these differences and distance that Sidney would have with Eugene, and then Eugene would be having against his own hometown, his brother, his family, and his best friend. It served to show how war had did its number on Eugene in many ways.
The sex scene between Sidney and Gwen mattered to the story, it served a narrative purpose eventually.
Crosby and Sandra's sex scene did not. And to include it meant there would be less screen time for any other story line, leaving not just the sub-plot of Crosby's arc weaker, but the other ones as well. Overall, this creative decision left MOTA a weaker show in term of its writing.

IT'S NEVER OVER | s.crosby
Sidney Crosby and Nat Brooks loved each other once. They'd loved each other through the most crucial parts of adulthood: Sid becoming a hockey superstar and Nat leaving for college in New York.
And then it fell apart.
But perhaps the most painful part of it all was that they still understood each other. Years had passed, and with that came breakups, marriages, failed relationships, changed careers...they'd lived completely separate lives for fourteen years, strangers in every sense of the word. They were different people, but the very core of their soles were still tangled.
Sometimes you just needed a little bit of courage. And what did it matter if they'd lost each other during the race if they crossed the finish line hand in hand?

nat was about to repaint her house when she got the call from the school: evan had another scare. sid had been coaching a small group of kids from a local school when one of them was pulled out by the school nurse. the next time he'd see him, evan would be sitting on the reception desk with nat...the nat brooks, of all people.

epigraph
" i will love you if i never see you again, and i will love you if i see you everyday
i will love you as we find ourselves farther and farther from one another, where once we were so close that we could slip the curved straw, and the long, slender spoon, between our lips and fingers respectively
i will love you until your face is fogged by distant memory. i will love you no matter where you go and who you see, i will love you if you don't marry me. i will love you if you marry someone else and i will love you if you never marry at all, and spend your years wishing you had married me after all, and i must say that on late, cold nights i prefer this scenario out of all the scenarios i have mentioned. that is how i will love you even as the world goes on its wicked way."

All-Star Love
Pairing: Matthew Tkachuck x Lemiuex!Reader
Summary: The NHL All Star weekend is always fun. But bring in a romance... Then that's when it becomes interesting.
Word Count: 1742
Warnings: None I think. Please tell me if I'm wrong.
A/N: This comes from a fanific I've written myself. I adjusted it for this but I loved this idea/scene.
THE MASTERLIST JOIN THE TAGLIST HOCKEY DISCORD
All-Star weekend 2020. This year it was being held in St. Louis. You had arrived on the Pittsburgh plane with Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang and Tristan Jarry since you were currently working with the team. Despite being Lemiuexâs child, you had earned yourself a position as an assistant coach at such a young age. You grew up playing the game. Now you were also the captain of the Canadian Womenâs team.Â
The last few years, you had attended the games alongside Sidney, who was an older brother after he lived with you and your family after he was drafted in 2005. It was a staple weekend in the season schedule. You had the chance to see all the friends and players you were close with and get to have some fun. Often you could even find yourself doing media stuff.Â
This year the NHL had introduced the Elite Womenâs 3 on 3. You were the youngest on the Canadian team by 5 years. They also have allowed the women on the teams to compete in the skills competitions. You had been placed into the Shooting Stars event. This meant that you were competing against your boyfriend, Matt, and his brother, Brady. Others in the skills competition include Mitch Marner, Patrick Kane, Tyler Seguin, David Perron, Hillary Knight, Danid Pastrnak and Ryan OâReilly.Â
Right now you were dressed in a pair of jeans and your team jersey. Standing in line waiting to be called to the stage where youâd be shooting from. With Mitch, Matt and Brady in front of you, the four of you were chatting and laughing. Each of you were excited to shoot off the platform.Â
âNow your Gatorade Shooting Stars⊠from your St. Louis Blues, number 57, David Perron!â
The arena came to life, all cheering on one of the home team players. Perron, with his son in his arms, made his way up the stairs from ice levels. Handing out beanies and high fiving the fans as he went up to the platform.
âFrom the Toronto Maple Leafs, number 16, Mitch Marner.âÂ
Mitch followed Perron up the steps. Handing out hats as he went. Matt stepped forward to the bottom of the stars, looking up at all the fans. He had a hand on your lower back. Brady had let your stand next to your boyfriend whilst you three waited.
âFrom the Calgary Flames, number 19, Matthew Tkachuk.â Matt follows Mitch up. âFrom the Ottawa Senators, number 7, Brady Tkachuk.â
âThe Canadian Womenâs All Star, number 11, (Y/N) Lemieux.â
As you walked up the many stairs, you handed out rolled up t-shirts to fans. It was weird to have this many cameras in your face though. If you were honest, the walk up to the platform looked a lot shorter from the bottom. Especially the amount of stairs you had to climb. You reached the platform and waited for the rest of the players to join herself,Matt, Brady, Mitch and Perron. When everyone had gotten there, it went straight into the competition. First to shoot was Perron. He scored a total of 14 points. Mitch was next on the platform. He scored an awesome 22 points.
âOur next shooter, Matthew Tkachuk,â Nick started. âYour brother Brady is following you so we thought, hey, why not get one more Tkachuk up here. Why not bring up your Dad. Give it up St. Louis, for all-star Kieth Tkachuk!â
Yourself and Brady grin, tapping your sticks as you watched Keith join Matt on the platform, an arm around his shoulder with a wide smile on his face. Nick motioned for Brady to join them as well. You decided to give him a light shove as a joke.
âYou should be up here as well,â Brady commented as he joined his brother and father.
You laughed at Bradyâs comment. Sending a wink to Matt as well who had the biggest smile on his face.
Keith turned to face you, giving you a joking look, âI think weâre missing someone up here.â
âI ainât no Tkachuck,â You reply. âEnjoy the moment, big guy.â
Matt stepped forward from where he was standing, holding his hand out for you. âWell, maybe we should change that, hey?â
âWhat?â
Keith, Brady and Nick stepped back from the platform and Matt grabbed your hand, pulling you to the centre of the platform they were standing on. Your hands flew to your mouth as you watched Matt slowly kneel to one knee and open a ring box. In the box sat the most perfect engagement ring you had ever seen.
âNo way,â you breathed, looking at Matt who had the biggest smile on his face.
âYouâve been my best friend since we met all those years ago right here in this very arena. When little (Y/N) bumped into me as she ran to get away from her dad. Youâve been considered part of this family since then but I think I need to make it official, make sure you donât stand out too much with that last name. Will you do me the greatest honour of changing your last name from Lemieux to Tkachuk?â
You nodded, too shocked to answer in words. The arena roared to life when Matt stood up and kissed you. He pulled the ring out of the box as you dropped your gloves. You cried as Matt slid the ring on your finger. Once he had sealed the deal, you lunged at him, wrapping your arms around his shoulders excitedly.
The players around them and on the bench, as well as the whole arena, were screaming and cheering. Mitch and Brady made sure they were heard over everyone else.Â
âI canât believe you,â You laughed as you pulled away from Matt. Brady was the first to hug you congratulations. He had the biggest grin as well. The smile gave him away. âYou knew!â
âOf course I did,â Brady chuckles, âI helped choose the ring.â
Brady was interrupted when Keith pulled you into a hug. âI think you should just keep your last name, itâs more recognisable.â
âTkachuk is better, that's for sure.â
Nick soon joined the happy group. You were tucked into Mattâs side like usual. Nick held his hand out to Matt who shook it happily before handing Matt a new jersey. It was a grey All-Star Canadian jersey like you were wearing. You grabbed it from Matt, checking the back which now had Tkachuk on it.
âOh my god,â You grinned, pulling off your current jersey for the new one.
âHey, have a look at the photo up on the board you guys.â There was a photo of Keith kneeling by the bench in front of a young Brady, Matt and yourself. You had attended the weekend with her father and hung out with the boys. One of the rare times you got to see the Tkachuk brothers as a kid. âHow exciting is it to be on this platform being here, history in the making, with your sons and soon to be in-law?â
âIâm so proud of these guys,â Keith stated, smiling at you three. âTheyâve earned being here. Matt and Brady grew up here, watched me play here. I mean, Matt met (Y/N) just outside the home change rooms in this arena.â At that, there was a picture of Matt, Brady and Taryn, the youngest Tkachuk, standing with Keith now on the screen. âI love these guys. I know they love the Blues deep down.â
âOh, weâre excited to have you here. 18000 people wanna know, how many pucks can Tkachuk chuck, chuck? So why donât you have a go at this.â Keith took Mattâs stick from him as the three young adults stepped back. âCome on, Keith Tkachuk everybody!â
Keith shot the puck, nearly getting it in the 10 pointer net. âNot a lot of love for that arch there Tkachuk,â You chirped as he turned to give Matt his stick back.
He hugged the three of you before Matt stepped up to the platform. But only after a kiss from you. Keithâs arm wrapped around your shoulder as they watched Matt drop his gloves.
âHow characteristicâŠâ You giggles, stopping when he pulls off his Calgary jersey to reveal an old St. Louis Cardinals jersey.
âWhoâd he fight?â Keith laughed. âHe wonât touch you.â
âHeâll fight me,â Brady mumbled from beside you.
The three of you chuckled as you watched Matt take his first shot. As he took his next few shots, you listened to Brady and Keith chirp your boyfriend, well now Fiance. Matt ended up with 24, getting a 10 on his last one.
âLook at you go,â You smiled, pecking Matt when he switched spots with Brady.Â
Brady stepped up to the plate. Matt pulled from under his dadâs arm into his. Having you stand in front of him with his arms around you. When Brady took his first shot, Matt laughed at the fact his brother didnât do anything special as a tribute to their hometown.Â
âNext up we have the last of the three musketeers.â
You stepped onto the platform, with a good luck kiss from Matthew. You had 7 shots to hit the targets laid out on the ice below. With the first shot you hit a 5. After your 6 other shots, you came to a total of 24 as well. Tie with Matthew. After everyone else had taken their shot, it was only Matthew and yourself that had the highest score. No-one had outshot you two.Â
âSince you both scored an amazing 24 points, we go to a sudden death shootout. One shot. Highest score wins.â
Matt shot first, missing the arch but a hair. You shot next. The puck went flying over the arch. Actually hitting Jarry who was chilling at the end of the end with some of the other goalies.Â
âInjure your goalie, why donât ya?â Matt chirps as he steps up once again.Â
Round two. Matt shoots and hits the 5 points. Only way for you to beat that was to score the same or hit the arch for 10 points. You took a moment before finally shooting the puck. It went straight into the arch. You grin, cheering as you turn to where Matt was standing.
âBetter luck next time Tkachuk!â
He smiled, coming up to congratulate you. He pressed a kiss to your lips. âNext time, youâll be a Tkachuk as well.â
