It saddens me deeply when the few people who write fics with filipino mythology and the vast majority of them are libulan/si dapa, which not only perpetuates the lies of libulan being the patron god of homosexuality, but also to my understanding si dapa isn't actually the god of the dead (there's a few who are involved in that domain), he just determines a person's lifespan
we deserve to be silly and goofy about our gods, and I think they are very interesting and can prompt some good writing! but instead you just focus on the (1) myth that's not even true
i am once again reminding you libulan is a pubescent boy and Not the god of homosexuality

I believe I owe you all a character design :3
I am not good at making up my own armor designs, be it fantasy or sci-fi (which this is supposed to be both), which... also translates to making full on robots (I have re-drawn an iron man style armor so many times), which is a shame cause I LIKE making robots which clearly means I need to just draw freaking more and just study’s Tony’s damn armor more
ANYWAY--
I do want to redraw this and make it better sometime soon-ish, but I am really happy with how she came out!
Imma attach all the concept references I used, as well as the bits of world and character lore our prof asked us to also write up for her, under the cut!
Please enjoy Reyna Zulueta, The Lunar Reaper
Tumblr media
World Lore:
In a world advancing further into sci-fi technology, it and the realm of magic and gods have found a way to co-exist together, mingling magic and hi-tech to surpass boundaries the other has. It’s still an on-going process, but it’s going… as smoothly as one expects.
And though the various Gods are not particularly active or felt, some having been forgotten due to colonizers, they have not abandoned the world. And they see the potential for disaster far too easily.
And so, sometimes, they make a claim on a mortal, gift them their powers, and make them their champions and avatars to protect their worlds and peoples from inevitable dangers and catastrophes, both natural and man-made.
The world, having recognized perhaps the trend, though not the explicit hand of the Gods, decided to create an organization meant to help train and protect these young people in order to better prepare them for their duties.
 Character Lore:
Reyna is a rare case of having been chosen by two gods. She was conceived and spent half her time in the womb in Visayas, and then spent the latter half and birthed in Luzon.
The Warrior Moon Goddess Mayari of old Tagalog myth, and The Goddess of Death Sidapa from old Bisaya myth, both attempted to make a claim on her, and both found they had a legitimate claim. With both old deities having a background in sharing charge over a world, they decided to share Reyna, and have turned her into the Lunar Reaper.
 Character Personality:
Reyna is a tough and stoic person, her nature coming from the strong influence of a warrior goddess. She’s honest, takes duty seriously, and ambitious, though at the moment her ambition is a bit aimless as she tries to navigate being a Champion and those duties (that she never had a say in), and what she owes herself, the life she wants to build for herself outside of it all.
As a result, she keeps quiet about things relating to her, while being open about anything but. Any inner turmoil is kept under wraps as she tries to figure out her identity and future.
She has a habit of thinking “If you want something done right, you do it yourself”, and thus sometimes bites off more than she can chew. She will always try to finish what she started though.
   Social Significance / Representation:
I love researching mythology, and especially old Philippine mythology once I found out we once had one. This, I feel, is an important part of our old culture, and I’d love for it to be more well known, in a better capacity.
And Mayari is my favorite of all Philippine deities.

Sa Mata ni Sidapa
ni Justin Minoru Leachon Luna
24-Aug-15
ng paglalakbay na animo ay tahing lilip;
nauupos na kandila patungo sa limot;
isang ikot mula umpisa hanggang mawala,
simula pagsibol n'ya, hanggang mamukadkad s'ya,

Excerpt from Mariang Makiling
“Leave.”
Its voice echoed through the forestry, disturbing the seen and unseen, shaking trees and the ground. Nichole crutched down, weakened to the knees. She knocked her head to the earth, hands covering both ears to ease the painful ringing. Almost, she hoped for the sweet relief from Sidapa’s hand.
Slowly, the pressure in the atmosphere faded, breathing audible to her battered ears, her friends’ voices finally reaching her consciousness, calling out to her repeatedly.
“Nico!”
“Nichole!”
Maeri Keith was first to reach Nichole, hands tight on her shoulders, forcing her to stand. When she caught her crazed eyes, she knew what had happened—all too well, as if watching herself.
“Breathe, Nico”—the girl struggled, eyes streaming tinted tears—“What did you see?”

Notes: Hi, hello! Thanks so much for reading. How are you? It’s been a long time since the last Mariang Makiling excerpt! I finally had some good progress this week. *pops confetti* We’re getting to one of the most interesting part of this novella (though I’m starting to feel this might become a full novel. Hahaha.) Have a great day/night!

yaaa :3
ill is just i’ll without the little tick lol ;; its i will but shortened into a whole new word to save space also, amihan is a separate deity by itself—i think the word you’d be lookin for is ‘diwata’, which roughly translates to goddess/fairy directly, but can be used regardless of gender! habagat is, yes, a wind god, and is also one of the two names for the monsoons the PH gets :3 theres a lot of other gods in the pantheon, so heres some i remember most clearly: diyan/dian masalanta; also known as maria makiling (mountain goddess, protector of lovers), apolaki (sun god), anitun tabu (wind/rain goddess), amansinaya (sea god), bathalà (supreme god), amanikable (sea god, initially a god of the hunt), mayari (moon goddess), hanan (day goddess), and tala (star goddess) :3 im pretty sure theres a lot more, n i got most of my info from a website i trust abt this sort of thing!! i can send the link 2 you if you’d like ><
psst. hey. have you ever tried a weed brownie. amihan told me to NOT sne dthis 2 u but like i think you shpuld try it….. [attached to the letter is a small basket of brownies. one of them is wrapped in plastic—a sticky note that was slapped onto the top, in hastily written style, simply reads out ‘meow? (try it?)’—the others are free from the wrap, and smell like they’ve been freshly baked. thats probably the only actual weed brownie she sent. aperion wasn’t about to risk the wrath of whoever ruled the underworld, seeing as she is a filipino demigod and has little information on greek and roman mythology.] — @pearls-of-taal //on a small note if this ask makes you really uncomfortable please let me know, i do not want to scare you away ! i find ur blog rlly cool :(
I don't think I'd wanna try any sort of substances. I mean, if mom could get addicted to alcohol.. I dunno, I don't wanna be ANYTHING like her. But thanks :)
(ooc: im filipino too but i know literally nothing about our mythology, and I can't even speak in filipino. AND I LIVE IN THE PHILIPPINES. Please send help lol)

Marahuyo Project Eps 3 & 4 Stray Thoughts
Last time, we met King, our out queer activist, whose family moved him to Marahuyo after he was expelled from his high school for making out with his friend and then knocking down the dean. Here, on an island with only 12 hours of electricity a day, King finds himself with little queer community and so decides to build it himself. He bonded with Venice, a trans girl in his class, to build an LGBTQIA+ organization in their school. Unfortunately, he must get the approval of the student council president and then the board. King believes the president is his enemy, but it’s clear these two are vibing. We’re also detecting queers all over the place, particularly Lorena and Lili. I’m having a blast to finally be back in the Philippines and to have a show not in the bubble.
Episode 3: Sidapa At Bulan
I’m getting really sad for Ino. I grew up in a city, and so as I started to figure out myself I was able to go online and express that. All he can do is write his letters to the cosmos and the gods and leave them on a rotting boat.
I am so happy for Venice that she has a friend. She’s clearly resurging out of her shell.
OOF, this eye contact scene.
Wow, Lili is smart enough to make sure they’re actually alone in the bathroom before having a serious conversation.
That’s right, Lorena, you take the time to figure out what queerness means to you.
Omg are we faking distress now??
CPR could actually break his ribs, so this is probably a terrible idea.
I’m glad they didn’t touch lips like this.
Okay, that tongue in cheek moment was something else. Holy shit.
I’m a fan of the plan to write letters back to Ino!
I bet it was Ino who vandalized the mural. This mermaid thing is too specific to the people of Marahuyo.
Marco, STFU. This is not about you! Lorena is standing up for her friend! FFS!
I always feel so much for people like Lorie in the community. Lorie never intended to come out, but she did to protect someone else in her community with a show of solidarity. I also came out because I didn’t want to hurt a woman I admired and respected a lot.
Archie and Venice were definitely close before. He knows way too much about her, and is constantly trying to protect her.
I do love how plain the politics of this show are. Drawing the comparison of people wanting to defend Ino’s family and reputation with the lack of defense for King and his friends is a strong note. It’s especially potent because Ino seems to have serious angst about his family’s reputation.
I love the notes exchange. Ino is smart, and definitely suspects that he’s actually writing to King. This is such a great way for him to work up his courage and comfort.
Episode 4: Santelmo
Wow. Cutting his hair while King was asleep is so, so violent.
King, please do not embarrass yourself IN A BARBERSHOP!
The barber may have done a good job with the haircut, but I’m still mad about his mom cutting his hair.
King is correct. Ino is way more attractive when he’s experiencing joy or amusement.
I love Venice. She came over to call out King on his bullshit and then immediately started teasing.
It’s 2024! We all verse now!
Okay, Lorie, that’s so difficult. I had wondered about her reactions whenever her dad came up in discussion.
Oh no. Does Venice know who died by the beach in the Santelmo story?
Oh ho, we’re sitting on a log on the beach and talking about love. I really love the way Adrian turns to the camera as King.
I actually love that King as a character is jaded about love. He’s not building an organization because he’s looking to smash or for love. He’s building it because he believes in community for people like him.
That being said, he’s so ridiculous about Ino.
COUPLE KEY CHAINS ALREADY??
Do we have any fans from the Philippines watching on Tumblr? I’d like some additional linguistic context about the ‘mermaid’ term. Getting the sense that Ino’s dad left for a queer relationship.
King’s shirt looks even gayer during this splashing scene.
They let these boys ride the bike themselves at night? Brave choices from this production team.
Wow, an even gayer crop top.
This grief scene was devastating.
Archie, dude, you’re killing me. You lost one trans friend. Why shove the other away like this?
Yeah, the mom basically just told Ino, “Don’t be gay.”
Um, I’m really fucking nervous about someone approaching the boat with a fucking torch.
I am absolutely in love with this show. I love that for all the posturing that there’s no queerness on Marahuyo, we now know of multiple characters who are either queer or closely related to queer people. It’s been so long since we’ve seen a show where the characters have expressed their feelings for each other in roundabout ways but won’t say it openly, and that not feel like shit. Everyone who’s seen them together can see what’s happening. I’m so nervous for Ino. I love that King is being patient with him without diminishing himself or his goals. I’m going to be thinking about Lorie abandoning the safety of heteronormativity and the closet to stand beside other queers, and also about Venice having to constantly defend hers and Christina’s names to their former best friend.

Yo, just saw the Celestial NATO tag, lemme introduce you to the Philippine mythology gods!
Macaque is probably wondering why the actual hell there are 7 moon gods, instead of just one!
Also; the god of Death and a god of the moon are husbands in mythology. /pos /gen
The text below this one is pasted from a website I don't really remember the name of!
"There is a pre-colonial Visayan myth that tells the story of how two gods fell in love. The tale talks of the God of Death. Sidapa, who lived alone on Mt. Madjaas. From there he could see the seen moon gods, each of who represents a phase of the moon. Many were captivated by their beauty, including Sidapa and Bakunawa, the sea dragon. Sidapa fell in love with the seven moon gods. He asked the birds and mermaids to sing his praise to the moons. He ordered the flowers to make sweet perfumes that reached the skies. He asked for the fireflies to light a path in the sky so the moons could find him.
One of the moon gods. Libulan, came down on this firefly path to meet Sidapa, who showered him in love and gifts. But as their romance bloomed. Bakunawa grew furious; it rose from the sea and devoured the moons. But Sidapa saw it attacking and saved Libulan from its wrath. It is said that afterwards, they resided as husbands on Mt. Madjaas. Some LGBT Filipinos today use Libulan as a symbol and refer to him as the patron god of homosexuality."
Awwww!
Sidapa really serenaded the moon so much he got a husband <3
I feel like Macaque and Libulan would get along very well. Both are moon entities, and are in love with a sweetheart on a mountain
Mac is trying his best to keep track of all the different moon entities filling up Chang'e kitchen /jk

Spent most of Labor Day weekend dressing up my catgirl, Hanan. I made her near the end of EW (along with her sisters, Tala and Mayari) when I was going through some pretty bad burnout.
I'm still figuring out who she is and a lot of her personality. Seeing as I don't have a canon WoL yet (both Yrja and Kotone are non-wols and are featured in my friend's wolverse) she might fill in that spot as I go through msq. We'll see!
in the meantime, gaze upon her cuteness.
