Warnings: Kind of complex feelings on Mortarion's part, but nothing else

"There is no mistaking it, my lord."

Mortarion looks out the window into the pitch black, listening to the marine behind him. While the marines can't directly face him, they can see Mortarion's irate, conflicted face even behind his mask and limp grey hair.

"The woman is a psyker."

In the silence of the room they can hear Mortarion's haggard breaths, his wheezing; The leather and metal of his gauntlets creaks and groans as his fists flex. The eldest speaks up again.

"Should we be rid of her now?"

Now does Mortarion turn a bit, away from the sickly green and orange haze of Barbarus through the glass. He wishes he could just throw the entire planet into the abyss.

"No. I will decide what we do."

They all noticeably change reaction, looking at each other. It strikes something through them- not fears but perhaps weariness.

"My lord, you... You aren't considering keeping her with us, are you?"

They are somewhat aware of Mortarion's attachment to you- his artist, his beauty, who created rather than destroyed. But they didn't think his fondness- infatuation - spread this deep. That he was willing to defy the most absolute of orders.

"My lord, after Nikaea we cannot risk having an unsanctioned, uncontrolled psyker with us, The Emperor wills-"

Mortarion now fully turns to face them, his voice echoing through the metal of his mask. The change in the air is palpable- like static - at his increasing anger.

"I will make the decision on what we do. None of you." He sighs and partly turns away again, letting out a few coughs from the sudden intensity change of his voice. One hand paws at his neck until he gathers enough control over the spasms in his throat to speak.

"Go."

The three marines hesitate to leave, but end up doing so moments later with nary an farewell. Mortarion can sense the unease in them, and he expects his captains to come clambering to him to reconsider this decision quite soon.

Mortarion sneers at the visage of Barbarus one more time and turns away from the glass, leaving not long after them.

He had you returned to his quarters after they proved without a shadow of a doubt what they saw. That The Endurance had an unsanctioned psyker aboard. Technically even now as they decide your fate, they are violating the Absolute Decree set by The Emperor at Nikaea.

When he opens the door, it takes a few moments for him to spot you. You aren't on the bed, but instead huddled in a corner holding the pillow he uses close to you. The shadows almost completely consume you, body swallowed in your large, moth eaten clothes. You look unkempt, bruises mar your skin. His men weren’t gentle with you.

You look up to him, and Mortarion can see the fear. How lost you look. How tired.

"I, I didn't know..." You swallow heavily. "I suppose that doesn't matter to all of you, does it."

Mortarion had already told you snippets of what happened at Nikaea. He had largely been in support of it; Having psykers running amok uncontrolled would only end in disaster. He remembers how they tore his home planet to shreds.

"Are you…” You hesitate, unable to say it. “You said the Emperor decreed only Navigator and Astropath psykers can exist… and I…”

You've spent almost two years aboard The Endurance. Most of it at his side, and in his quarters. Mortarion remembers the first day he saw you- the first time he touched your skin without armor in his way. He holds them close like a treasure; Rare moments when he felt as close to a man as he could, before he tumbled back into reality.

Mortarion hates that you're a psyker. He hates what that reminds him of. He wants to hate you. You’re a liar, you’re a thing that will cause nothing but chaos and unrest.

He hates that he's hesitating, because it's you.

“…No.”

It hurts him to say it. For years he has spit vile hatred for psykers, for the destruction they wrought. Now you sit before him as a proven he hates both answers to.

‘Another one?’

Mortarion sighs and lets go of your hand as you tugged away, going for a beautiful wildflower.

‘I like its grey color, it reminds me of your armor.’

Mortarion watched as you plucked a section of it to propagate back aboard The Endurance. The little desk of yours in his quarters is covered in plants, defying the impossible.

Mortarion assumed that not many living things could survive in such close proximity to him. But somehow you’re able to keep not only alive but flourishing; Blooming in even the worst conditions.

Their blossoms remind him of you. How you can withstand the poison in his lungs, the cycle of disease and rot within him. How your lips feel soft as petals as you kiss him, and despite the hideousness of your surroundings, of him, you are still a beautiful flower.

But you haven’t destroyed anything, Mortarion can’t deny it. Everything you touch has bloomed and colored, while he looms over you as a rotting, festering corpse.

“I am going to speak to my men about this.” He needs to inform them that you are staying, and that he needs to ask a favor of one of his brothers. You are a beautiful, ticking time bomb, and one of them might know how to disarm you. At least enough to keep you safe.

He needs to tell his men now they now need to operate with secrecy, as they carry something that could have the entirety of the Imperium waging war on them.

“I’ll be back soon.”

Mortarion takes one look at your desk, absolutely lush with life, before leaving his quarters and locking the door behind him.

American Copper (Felis cactus seclusus) Through my many studies throughout the Mojave, our team's most prolific discovery is that of the American Copper cat, aptly named due to their residence inside the old copper mines that litter the area. Categorized by their thin, pale fur and warped bone structure, we concluded that the American Copper is a subspecies of what we commonly refer to as the domestic cat - being so far secluded from the rest of other subjects, the anatomy and biology of the American Copper has changed drastically. Due to the insufficient environmental lighting, their eyes have evolved from what appears to be a Russian Topaz mutation - making it suitable for them to reside in the dark tunnels of the copper mines. The diet of the American Copper is limited - resulting in an extremely lithe bone structure, and most, if not all, of the lineage in this subspecies has a form of brittle bone disease and other bone deformities. They are very timid animals and seemed to "scatter" at the sight or movements of our flashlights - unlike most domestic cats we see in our normal day to day lives. My team and I have no understanding why they have become to secluded from the rest of the cats we have studied living in the Mojave, as the mines are not suitable for most life - especially not warm-blooded animals. I am curious to continue my studies on them, but getting through the mines has proven difficult enough, as one of my colleagues has to be lifted out due to a slip on sediment - causing her to break her arm on the way down. Below are the studies and sketches I managed to make while observing these strange animals. --Dr. Joseph Caladan Fig. 1a As seen here, the fur of the American Copper is thin, patchy and serves no purpose other than minimal warmth in the caves. Underbellies and legs are devoid of hair - leaving sickly skin exposed. Ears and other extremities appear torn, possibly from the rocky interiors. Most notable are their eyes (fig. 1b) - wide and reflective. Fig.2 A crude sketch of the skeleton, as we discovered a highly decomposed one within the sediment. Bones are airy and weak, often warped and bent - possibly due to insufficient nutrients or environmental factors. We are unsure which but hypothesize it is a combination of the two.

Krow seeing this, and even in his... very unhinged, deranged and very much lacking sanity state, just gives an eerie smile to Gabriel, seemingly unfazed by them drawing out the weapon. Krow is slowly raising his hands, almost as if to surrender (is that what he is doing? Please?) but instead, Gabriel only watches, with some degree of horror, as the now green eyed artist curls his fingers around the barrel of the pistol. That manic looking smile still on his face, his fangs in clear view.

"A-and...? W-will you s-shoot me? Right here?" He asks, guiding the gun with his hands to point under his chin, "here, and the b-blood splatters, f-falling like rose petals a-around us? E-even if I d-die, I will still be here with you. Always."

And if Gabriel is sufficiently unnerved by this (and somehow hasn't pulled the trigger), that would be when Krow quickly wrestles the gun away from them (oh, how frightfully strong he is, for one so unassuming), grabbing them in a hold before tossing away the weapon with a sigh. "W-won't be needing that. S-sorry, my B-Beloved. B-but not for that."

Something covers Gabriel's mouth and nose then, and a sudden strong, sickly sweet smell starts to overwhelm the senses. There might be a struggle, but gods, how was he so strong? "Rest now, r-rest. Shhh..."

Once upon a wintry day, amidst my usual bouts of procrastination, I found myself inspired to create yet another digital masterpiece. This artistic endeavour, contrary to my usual pace, unfolded from inception to completion within the confines of a single day—a feat I initially deemed impossible given my tendency to succumb to distractions. However, the muse had other plans for me, and as serendipity would have it, even an unexpected afternoon nap failed to derail my creative momentum.

The protagonists of my canvas were none other than my beloved original characters, Arlon and Liliana, the very mascots of my idealised romantic narrative. They found themselves within the dimly lit expanse of their room, where a palpable chill hung in the air. In this particular artwork, an uncommon occurrence for the duo, both Arlon and Liliana found themselves ailing. The coldness of the wintry day seemed to have taken its toll on their fictional physiques, casting a rare shadow over their usually vibrant and energetic existence.

As the observer navigates the visual narrative, the scene unfolds in front of a comforting firebox, the warm hues casting a gentle glow upon the couple huddled together. Wrapped snugly in a single blanket, they defy the chill that surrounds them. Despite their illness, the air of contentment envelops them as they lean into each other, finding solace in the shared warmth of their embrace. It's a poignant portrayal of the resilience of love, transcending the limitations of a physical ailment.

As the artistic journey progresses, a curious detail emerges within the narrative. The remedy for their malady takes an unexpected turn, adding layers to the complexity of their relationship. So I’m not gonna get into all the OC’s I made for this au because we’d genuinely be here all day. But the main bitches for this au and a bit about them (please keep in mind that I have only finished the first two danganronpa games and I’ve only just gotten to the death in chapter 4 for v3. And I haven’t consumed any other danganronpa content. All that to say, some shit might change or be inaccurate to canon lore. If that’s the case…shh this is already a canon divergence, let me have my fun /lh

Anyway, main characters:

Emiko Naegi, she/her, ultimate entrepreneur. She’s the daughter of Byakuya and Makoto. Emiko is a very confident individual who inherited Byakuya’s business sense. Shes genuinely a very nice person though and likes just having fun, though she can be very blunt and a little spoiled which means she occasionally comes off as rude to people who don’t know her well

Junichi Gokuhara, he/him, ultimate card player. He’s the son of Celeste and Gonta (rare pairs my beloved). Junichi is Emiko’s boyfriend and a very polite man, having learned from his parents to be a proper gentleman (the dynamic with Emiko is very much “I can do it myself” X “I know but let me”). He was a sickly kid so couldn’t be in school a lot and as such, Celeste taught him how to play various card games which Junichi quickly had a knack for, even if he can never beat his mum lol. He’s someone who just wants to enjoy the game though and doesn’t take money during games as he feels money would ruin it. He isn’t perfect though, as he is extremely competitive. It’s a running joke for Emiko that Junichi is a complete sweetheart but when it comes to playing games, he becomes low key evil lmao (he’s also the only straight character I have in this au lmao. Idk man everyone else was too fruity. Junichi’s a 10/10 ally tho. He loves his trans/bi girlfriend)

Seiko Saihara (I didn’t know there was a canon danganronpa character named Seiko when I named him and now I’m too attached to the name lol), he/him, ultimate lie detector/deception expert. Son of Shuichi and Kokichi. Seiko is a childhood friend of Emiko’s, having met her in middle school and they’ve been like brother and sister since. Seiko is honesty just a mischievous lil shit with a love for gossip. He’s got a good heart though and is insanely loyal. Most right him off as an idiot but it’s far from true, Seiko actually being very intelligent and having learned to read body language in order to tell when people are lying, a skill that comes in handy when you have Kokichi as a parent. He acknowledges that his skills aren’t fool proof (Emiko’s autistic ass quickly teaching him that certain body language isn’t always an indication of deception) but the more he practices the better he gets. Seiko also has a pretty dirty sense of humour (without being a perv) and is a bisexual mess

Kimika Yumeno, she/her, ultimate con artist. Daughter of Tenko and Himiko. Kimika takes on the role of the antagonist in my generational despair au. She seems nice at first but ultimately she’s a very cunning person. She honestly just likes being able to control situations and the people around her and an inability to do so can cause a spiral. She naturally has good in her like the rest of the danganronpa antagonists but her cons are a way for her to have fun, even at the expense of others

The characters in the original post:

Kiyono Hinata is a reserve course student and as I stated previously, the child of Hajime and Nagito. They’re also the childhood friend of Emiko and Seiko, the 3 all having met in middle school and now just behaving like siblings. Kiyono unfortunately inherited their dads depression though and for the most part Kiyono can just seem bored or dead inside. They also got sick of Nagito always talking to them about “hope” and now it’s gotten to the point they just hate that word and the idea of it, thinking it’s stupid and naive because bad things are going to happen regardless of if you’re hopeful or not etc. They’re a true introvert, not really speaking to anyone outside of their friend group (Emiko, Seiko, and Junichi) and when they’re not at school or with friends, they’re probably in their room watching horror movies on their laptop. They’re insanely loyal, however, and would do anything for their friends and family

Daiya Ishimaru (yes he was named after Mondo’s brother), fellow reserve course student and son of Ishimondo, is a non identical twin. His twin sister is named Katana and she’s the ultimate bodyguard and a top student. On the flip side, Daiya struggles in school and doesn’t have an ultimate. Being the only non ultimate in his family means Daiya is pretty fucking insecure and he and his sister have a lot of “friendly competitions” that mean a bit more to Daiya than they do Katana. Unlike Kiyono who’s more obviously depressed, Daiya hides it more and generally seems like a happy guy. He’s a big gamer nerd and also loves manga and such. He’s a little socially awkward though despite being an extrovert (tis the autism)

Kiyono X Daiya is very much a black cat X golden retriever couple but make them both depressed. They’re able to understand each other in that way and help each other out. Additionally, Daiya is an insomniac while Kiyono sleeps way too much. They just got that balance lol. And to top it off, in the generational despair au, Kiyono and Daiya aren’t in the actual killing game because they’re reserve course meaning the two of them are on the outside going though the same shit and working together to end the killing game and save their friends and family. And I mean, what’s more romantic than surviving the end of the world together?

I am hopefully gonna be writing my generational despair au. I’m still in the very rough draft stages tho and just chipping away at it as a mini project. It’s a lot of fun tho and I may share more stuff on it at some point🤷

Alessa: Lithe in stature and short in height, Alessa blends easily within the crowds. Still, taut muscles are visible just under her skin and the precision with which she moves signal clearly the danger that lurks within.     

With pointed features and full lips, Alessa would be considered beautiful by most if it weren't for the coldness always present in her light-blue eyes. Freckles splatter the skin of her nose and cheeks, and a mop of bright brown hair filled with golden locks falls past her slim shoulders. She wears black paint around her eyes and numerous rings adorn her fingers. Her skin is light and burns easily in the sun.

Hadrian: Standing above most people, his tall frame and broad shoulders make him stand out amongst most crowds. Molded by years of rigorous training, powerful muscles line his body. With his black sword, Hadrian makes an intimidating image.        

Hadrian has unruly dark-brown hair and deep-green eyes that seem to shine with honesty. Light stubble lines his jaw and neck. He wears an ever-present crucifix above his heart. His skin is bronze in the summer and fair during the winter months.

Alain: Tall and lean, Alain commands the eye whenever he enters a room. Golden skin and high cheekbones are paired with sharp lips that never seem to be still. His curly hair is usually styled back, leaving his forehead uncovered. Brown eyes watch the world as it brings him endless amusement.

Alain often dresses in the finest suits wealth can buy. He seems to favor deep green, one of the colors of his House.

Ysabella: Elegant and dazzling, Ysabella steals all eyes whenever she enters a room. Golden skin and full cheeks paired with bountiful lips that are always adorned with a bright smile. Her locks are often tamed to elegant curls that pool around her shoulders. Brown eyes twinkle at the world as if it tells her the most delightful of anecdotes. 

Ysabella often wears elaborate gowns and luxurious dresses. She favors gold, one of the colors of her House.

Lance: If there is something to be said about his appearance, it's that it's tailored to draw the eye. Impossible to miss even in a crowded square, Lance's tall frame will catch your attention. By force. 

He wears a gold vest, sleeveless so that his tanned arms are left uncovered, with a high collar that frames his neck in white silk. The vest is tucked into green-colored breeches, large and baggy except near his calves, where they straighten and narrow. Black shining shoes leave a large portion of his socks uncovered. One gold, the other black. 

It all clashes with his hair, blue as the deepest water. Gray eyes watch the world, often paired with a pleasant smile, where a gold tooth shines. 

Neia: Tall, strong, and with long white hair, Neia makes for an imposing image. She dons black armor from head to toe, and her shattered greatsword is so big it almost reaches her feet when sheathed. Neia has a deep scar on her lips, giving her a perpetual snarl. 

And her eyes, once brown, are now bright yellow. 

Rafael: Rafael looks terrible. Sickly gray skin, bloodshot eyes, lean frame seeming skinny and gaunt. Such is the aftermath of getting stabbed. His face is narrow, framed by a goatee that's not very abundant, and his brown eyes are equally sharp. His hair is shoulder-length, brown too, and he's missing one of his front teeth.

He favors grays and browns and capes with hoods deep enough to cover his face.

I just realized I didn't add a character page for The Pirate King. 😅 But here is his in-game description: You can’t see his face, not most of it, but his mouth is left uncovered by the crimson shawl he wears. Lips surrounded by a black beard that grows past his chin. A bright yellow ring clasps it around the center, making a kind of ponytail that almost reaches his chest.  

In the Interlude he appears without a shawl: His eyes are hooded, his cheeks long and narrow, and his chin ends in a long beard with a gold ring in the middle. As dark as the long hair tied loosely on his back. 

Lia has never seen anyone with his features before. Not these kinds of eyes and nose. His skin is tanned, like all who make the sea their home, but even so, his skin tone is different too. Paler than hers will ever be.

Tumblr’s Guide to Shostakovich: An Uncomfortable Truth

Hello, everyone.

You may be wondering why I'm writing another essay on the subject of Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich today, right after another one I just finished recently. However, important information has come to light, information that cannot be ignored. As a researcher, it would be irresponsible and dishonest of me to hide this information from the public, especially on a subject I have devoted so much time and effort into researching. It pains me to reveal this information, but in the field of history, sometimes uncomfortable truths must be brought to light in order to further our understanding of the past. I have known this information for a very long time, and, I'm sorry to say, have withheld it from the public, as not to soil and degrade the image of such a beloved composer (although historically, plenty of people have soiled and degraded his image, so if that many people are doing it, it sort of seems like it might be fun), but I am done hiding this information and must share it with my devoted readers, lest they continue to consume lies, falsehoods, and half truths. I will waste no time in divulging this information to you all. To those of you whom, like I, love Shostakovich's music, I hope this revelation will not alter your view of those brilliant works which you hold in such high esteem.

The truth is this.

After three years of researching and analyzing sources, contacting experts, and learning as much as I could, I have come to this unavoidable conclusion-

Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich was a Tumblr Sexyman.

I know. It's very hard to process- I myself spent a very long time turning this devastating conclusion over and again in my mind, trying to think of another possible explanation. But the truth is, he fits all of the criteria and more to be considered one, and I can no longer ignore the truth and pretend it doesn't exist.

First, his physical appearance. Most Tumblr Sexymen, from The Lorax's Once-Ler to Hazbin Hotel's Alastor, wear dapper formalwear, often with coattails, a bow tie, and a button-up shirt. This is often the case as well with our dear Shostakovich. There are plenty of photographs out there of him in formalwear, playing the piano at concerts or conversing with fellow artists. His intellectual pursuits add to this qualification of seeming refined and classy as well- Shostakovich was an avid reader, and often quoted his favourite authors in conversation. His friend Isaak Glikman, perhaps the first person to observe Shostakovich's Tumblr Sexyman status, even notes this about his manner of dress in his younger years:

Some accounts portray the young Shostakovich as a puny, sickly weakling. This was far from the case. He was well-proportioned, slim, supple and strong; he wore clothes well, and in tails or a dinner jacket cut a most attractive figure.

Already, this reads like a fanfiction about any Tumblr Sexyman. In addition to the suit, Shostakovich was very pale and also wore his trademark round glasses, giving him a distinguished, intellectual appearance, and Glikman also cares to note his friend's "splendid head of light-brown hair, usually neatly brushed but sometimes 'poetically' dishevelled with a mischievous, unruly lock falling over his forehead." Indeed, Tumblr Sexymen often have playfully messy hair and sometimes distinctive eyewear, and Shostakovich is no exception.

But clothes do not a (Sexy)man make. A Tumblr Sexyman is not complete without a bit of darkness- sometimes an evil side belies their composed exterior, or, like Sans from Undertale, their goodness is tragically juxtaposed with some sort of great trauma they experienced in their backstory. Shostakovich seems to fit the second category, and as a result, was very withdrawn and mysterious. From a young age and well into his older years, he faced the deaths of loved ones, public humiliation, the horrors of war, constant thoughts of his own demise, numerous health issues, betrayals from friends, and of course, the ever-present demands of the Soviet regime. With most Tumblr Sexymen, a tragic history makes them intriguing to fans, and given the decades of musicological research and debate surrounding Shostakovich's own history and political ties, it seems his own backstory has proved to be compelling as well.

But a Tumblr Sexyman has ways of dealing with his troubles, and wouldn't you know it, Shostakovich fits this criteria as well. Tumblr Sexymen often have a sense of humour, joking and making sarcastic jabs to hide their pain and anxieties. They may give witty one-liners, tell puns, or even perform comedic or upbeat songs. And with Shostakovich, we see multiple accounts of his sarcastic humour, especially in his letters to Sollertinsky, a penchant for wordplay, even satirical musical pieces about his life experiences, like the "Antiformalist Rayok" and "Preface to a Complete Collection of my Works." He may not be singing about an evil plan like other Sexymen may, but the fact that these pieces exist certainly make it clear that he used music, comedy, sarcasm, and wordplay to cope with his anxiety or depression.

His chaotic unpredictability and political greyness clearly factor as well. While Shostakovich had a very strong moral center, his unique historical position in both expressing himself as an individual and an artist and being a dutiful servant of the regime meant he had a rebellious streak, which would surface when least expected. The composition of the joke-filled Ninth Symphony at the end of the war, for example, is seen by many as an act of rebellion, especially when compared to the earlier Seventh, and even in pieces like the Fifth Symphony, called a "response to just criticism" after the harrowing denunciations of 1936, subtle acts of resistance are interpreted in this work as well. Indeed, Shostakovich's political alliances are hard to place, and the fact that he lived by his own moral code first and foremost gives him an almost chaotic edge that would fit right in with any Tumblr Sexyman. Every time it seemed as if he had finally conformed to the expectations of the Party, Shostakovich would once again stir controversy with an innovative or subversive work, displaying a disregard for the strict rules of socialist realism underneath his quiet and unassuming exterior.

So yes, Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich was indeed a Tumblr Sexyman. He fits all the criteria, from his appearance, to his personality, to his backstory. I know this information may be hard to process, but it's the truth. But perhaps I'm overstating things. After all, as one of the greatest Tumblr Sexymen of all time once said, "how bad could it possibly be"?
