Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that is present at birth. Healthy red blood cells with normal hemoglobin are round and move easily all over the body. When someone has SCD, the red blood cells are hard and sticky. They are shaped like the letter C (and like a farm tool called a sickle). These damaged red blood cells (sickle cells) clump together. They can’t move easily through the blood vessels. They get stuck in small blood vessels and block blood flow. This blockage can cause pain. It can also damage major organs. Recognizing how sickle cell impacts your life may help spark important discussions with others. It’s Sickle Cell Awareness Month! I hate it when people say “suffering from” a disease. She’s suffering from Sickle Cell.. It’s like they’ve attached doom to your identity... A sentence of nonstop agony to your life story. I’ve always rejected that .. No one is allowed to create my story but ME! I didn’t allow Sickle Cell to give me a sentence of doom but allowed it to give me a reason to live with my WHOLE HEART! I chase every dream... I cherish every moment... I cuss real loud and OFTEN! I tell people how I feel in that moment... And I never hold back my tears.. I laugh extremely loud... And anytime I hear music.. I DANCE! I roll my windows down in the car just because the sounds lets me know I’m alive... My front door stays open just so I can appreciate the sun.. I take drives at night.. to appreciate silence. I HUG and KISS my kids daily to let them know that they are loved. And I LOVE... with my whole entire being.... despite how many times I’ve had my heart broken............... So part of my #growth is to step outta my 🦀#crabshell ♋ & #share some of my everyday experiences living with #SickleCell. Multiple traumas can stagnate & unconsciously fill you with fear. There was a time where #SickleCellAwareness & advocacy played a large role in my #life. I'd go to every Sickle Cell event, meeting, & walk-a-thon, but somewhere down the line I unconsciously allowed the back to back traumatic experiences suppress my #Spirit. As a result, I isolated myself. Literally closed myself away...Hid myself away with the window curtains drawn. My #ego couldn't #accept all the #health crises, surgeries, & instability. I felt like there was no point in sharing my story because I was in such a dark place and I didn't have a positive word for anybody. . I've worked hard to pull myself up out of the deep well of depression & #feel it's time to be the #SickleCellAdvocate #Ifeel #Iam. Letting go of resistance & negative thought patterns gives space to #allowing what is while working towards #elevating. Perpetually #healing! . #GoodMorning, it's #TransfusionDay! #SickleCellWarrior
