Ancient Warship’s Bronze Battering Ram Sunk During a Battle Between Rome and Carthage Found
Found near the Aegadian Islands, just west of Sicily, the bronze rostrum played a role in the last battle of the First Punic War, which ended in 241 B.C.E.
In 241 B.C.E., two empires faced off in a naval clash off the coast of Sicily. By then, Rome and Carthage had been fighting for more than two decades. Rome’s victory in the skirmish, officially called the Battle of the Aegates, brought an end to the First Punic War, the initial conflict in a series of wars between the two ancient powers.
Now, explorers have recovered a piece of that final battle: the bronze battering ram of an ancient warship. According to a statement from Sicily’s Superintendence of the Sea, the ram was found on the seafloor off the western coast of the Mediterranean island, at a depth of around 260 feet. To retrieve the artifact, the team used deep-water submarines from the Society for Documentation of Submerged Sites (SDSS) and the oceanographic research vessel Hercules.
The seabed off the Aegadian Islands “is always a valuable source of information to add further knowledge about the naval battle between the Roman and Carthaginian fleets,” Regional Councilor for Cultural Heritage Francesco Paolo Scarpinato tells Finestre sull’Arte. He adds that the find is yet another confirmation of the work of the late archaeologist Sebastiano Tusa, who spearheaded exploration of the seabed as the site of the 241 battle after a separate ram, also known as a rostrum, was first found there in the early 2000s. In the two decades since, researchers have recovered at least 25 rams from the seabed.
At the time of the Battle of the Aegates, Rome and Carthage had been at war for 23 years, fighting for dominance in the Mediterranean. As the Greek historian Polybius later wrote, the Romans sank 50 Carthaginian ships and captured another 70 along with their crews, taking nearly 10,000 sailors prisoner during the naval battle. Rome forced Carthage to surrender. But the fragile peace was short-lived: Over the next century, Rome would go on to fight a second and third war against the Punic people, winning each time.
“It was very costly, both in terms of human life and economically,” Francesca Oliveri, an archaeologist at the superintendence, told BBC News’ Alessia Franco and David Robson in 2022. “In the last phase, Rome even had to ask for a loan from the most well-to-do families to arm the fleet and build new boats.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The recently discovered ram has been brought to Favignana, one of the Aegadian Islands, for further study. Though its features are difficult to make out because the object is covered in marine life, researchers have been able to discern a decoration on its front: a relief depicting a Montefortino-style Roman helmet decorated with three feathers.
The battering ram adds to the wealth of war relics found on the seabed, which also include 30 Roman soldiers’ Montefortino helmets, two swords, coins and many clay amphorae (large storage jars).
According to the SDSS, rams were the most important naval weapons of their time. They were placed on the bows of warships at water level so that sailors could crash their boats into enemy vessels, damaging and sinking them. The plethora of rams scattered on the seabed are testaments to the weapons’ effectiveness in ancient battle.
“We are finding so many things that help to illustrate a little better the world of the third century [B.C.E.],” Oliveri told BBC News in 2022. “It’s the first site of a naval battle, in the world, that has been scientifically documented like this, and it will continue to be documented—because the area of interest is very large. … It will take at least another 20 years to explore it fully.”

~ PART 2 ~ Ariel don´t lives in Denmark, Disney says she lives in Mediterranean and Eriks Castle stands in Sicily: It could be for the following reasons: - The small proportion of redheads and people of color that exist live in Morocco and Algeria. Which border on the Mediterranean. - Fabius (Surgeonfish) lives in saltwater areas. This includes the Atlantic and also the northern part of the Mediterranean. So algeria and marokko too. - Scuttle (lesser black-backed gull) can also stay in Sicily during winter times. Just like in Morocco and Algeria. - Due to its Greek colonial rulers in ancient times, Sicily still has Greek influences today, such as temples. Arguments against it: - Erik is not a Sicilian or Italian name, but Scandinavian. It is most common *surprise* in Denmark. - In Denmark there was a king named Erik. This did not exist in Sicily. Roger II, William I and Frederick II were Norman rulers who ruled Sicily in the 4th century. But it was never said that Erik was a Viking. - I couldn't find a castle that was similar to Erik's castle. Sicily has 100s of castles. That's why I first watsched on the most famous castles, then those that are located on the Mediterranean and finally those that are in the northern part of the Mediterranean. That would be Castello Maniace, Castello di Solanto and Castello di Milazzo. You are welcome to start looking. But I haven't found a castle that even remotely looks like Erik's. - Of Triton's children, 4 out of 7 names have Greek origins. Ariels name is French or Hebrew. The other two had an Irish and a German name. And it's also very strange that the names for the live action film were changed to more African ones. As a rule, Sicilians do not have Greek first names, but Italian ones. If so, then they have Greek last names. - King Triton himself comes from Greek mythology. He is a child of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Triton has no children in mythology. But sbecause his children almost all have Greek names, it is quite likely that his empire is closer to Greece and therefore also close to Denmark. - Qoute: Red hair is most commonly found at the northern and western fringes of Europe. It is centred around populations in the British Isles and is particularly associated with the Celtic nations. Ireland has the highest number of red-haired people per capital in the world, with the percentage of those with red hair at around 10%. - The countries mentioned here are all close to Denmark. Especially in Ireland, people have hair as red as Ariel's. - The writer "Hans Christian Anderson" lived in Denmark and the original Fair Tail took place there. - The kingdom of Triton is called Atlantica, which is derived from Atlantic Conclusion: I find it very strange that Ariel should live in the Mediterranean, because a lot of things point to the Atlantic. And I couldn't find Erik's castle in Sicily. And if so, that doesn't mean that his Kingdom has to be there. This is probably in Denmark.

History
August 17, 1943 - During World War II in Europe, the Allies completed the conquest of the island of Sicily after just 38 days. This gave the Allies control of the Mediterranean and also led to the downfall of Benito Mussolini and Italy's eventual withdrawal from the war. However, the Germans managed to evacuate 39,569 troops, 47 tanks, 94 heavy guns, over 9,000 vehicles and 2,000 tons of ammunition back to the Italian mainland from Sicily.
August 17, 1978 - The first transatlantic balloon trip was completed by three Americans; Max Anderson, Ben Abruzzo, and Larry Newman, all from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Starting from Maine on August 11th, they traveled in Double Eagle II over 3,000 miles in 137 hours, landing about 60 miles west of Paris.
August 17, 1998- Bill Clinton became the first sitting President to give testimony before a grand jury in which he, the President, was the focus of the investigation. This resulted from a sweeping investigation of the President by Independent Counsel Ken Starr as well as a private lawsuit concerning alleged sexual harassment by Clinton before he became President. In the evening, President Clinton appeared on national television and gave a speech admitting he had engaged in an improper relationship with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The admission occurred several months after a much publicized denial.
Birthday - American frontiersman Davy Crockett (1786-1836) was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee. He was a farmer, scout and politician who perished at age 49 during the final heroic defense of the Alamo in Texas.

Drink These 5 Wines to Toast June!
Happy June! June is one of my favorite months of the year as it is my birthday month, so let’s celebrate! Pop and pour one of these beauties to toast the start of summer. I have such an adoration for bubbles. Flirty and fun, every day is a day to enjoy a sparkling wonder. Favorite History Books || Angevin Dynasties of Europe 900–1500: Lords of the Greater Part of the World by Jeffrey Anderson ★★★★☆
In the 15th century, when Richard, Duke of York wanted to emphasize his claim to the English throne in opposition to King Henry VI, he took a new name for himself: Plantagenet. This resonant name, which referred to a 12th-century ancestor, became – with a little help from Shakespeare – the family name historians use for the monarchs that ruled England from Henry II (1154–1189) until the accession of the first Tudor king in 1485. On Bosworth Field the defeat of Richard III ended the line of Plantagenet kings, but this name remains the most evocative in medieval English history. The greatest exterminatrix in the Plantagenet ‘Wars of the Roses’, at least according to Shakespeare’s plays about Henry VI, was Margaret of Anjou, Queen of England, who not only led troops against her rivals but also murdered Richard Plantagenet with her own hands.
Far away from the civil war in England, Margaret’s father, King René of Anjou, presided over one of the most sophisticated courts in Europe. Through genealogy and good fortune, René had become Duke of Anjou, Lorraine and Bar, Count of Provence and titular King of Sicily, Jerusalem and Aragon, and despite military reversals and a chronic lack of funds he had established peerless intellectual and cultural credentials. René held pageants and classically inspired processions in Naples and Lorraine, corresponded with the humanists credited with initiating the Renaissance, wrote (and possibly illustrated) chivalric romances and treatises that are amongst the most sumptuous manuscripts of the 15th century, and founded a chivalric order dedicated to dressing up and telling fabulous stories. Nothing could seem further from the vicious battles of the Wars of the Roses than René’s choreographed jousts and his obsession with elaborate costumes. The Plantagenets, who included some of the most effective kings in English history and were now locked in a desperate struggle for supremacy in England, seem to have little in common with the rulers of Anjou – the Angevins – like King René, who amused themselves with literature and learned displays of chivalry.
Yet the Plantagenets were Angevins. King René and Queen Margaret united two Angevin lines, one of which ruled England as the Plantagenets, and another that between the 12th and 15th centuries at one time or another ruled Anjou, Lorraine, Bar, Provence, Catalonia, Piedmont, Florence, Rome, Naples, Sicily, Albania, Greece, Hungary, Croatia, Poland and Jerusalem. Their line included conquerors, saints, philosopher kings, reigning queens, usurpers, reformers and patrons of the greatest art of the Middle Ages.
This is the Angevin story. It encompasses all the major events of European history from the 9th to the 15th centuries, and demonstrates the international sweep and cultural dynamism of Europe’s most compelling dynasty.

Question from fanfiction.net from DetroitNate -- Thanks for this story, it is one of my top five hands down. Also, I agree with you about blvnk, that has always been how I've seen Harry and Ginny. Thanks for a refresher course on Zee's parents sometimes it is difficult to remember who is who, which brings up another questionis there somewhere that I could see a list of your OCs, kind of like your brief explanation of Misha and Sorcha? Top 10 of Who I want to appear in Scooby Doo and Guess Who
This new show of Scooby Doo it’s getting pretty good, and I love the guest stars at the moment. From celebrities (Pen and Tell) to fictional characters(Sherlock Holmes), ths makes this show amazing. It’s most positive to get a new season, so why not discuss who we would like to have in this show?
(You’re welcome yo add your Top 10 of star guess for this show)
10. The Golden Girls
Tumblr media
Altho we know the original and wonderfull actresses won’t be able to share their voices, returning as their roles in the tv show, I do feel it would be hilarious to have this gang of old ladies joining the mystery gang. Blanche would be very flirsty with Fred while Dorothy points out that he could be his grandson. Rose, naive and innocent would be the compleatly clueless and dog lover. And I’ll die to have Sophia say her famous quote “Picture it: Sicily 19538ish)”
9. The Mask/Stanley Ipkiss
Tumblr media
We are having the 90s comedi icon Steve Urkel back so why not another icon of black comedy. The Mask was one of my favorites for being so crazy, bonkers and unpredictable (the comic it’s way different tho). And I think the Mask himself could the main antagonist of the episode, and in the reveal could be Stanley (or not). I think it would be a great move to have this character back and redeem his image after what some movie producers has done to him (watch The Mask 2 to stand my point)
8.Anthony Anderson/Andre Dre Johnson from Blackish
Tumblr media
I’m getting grow with this man and his character of the show. I’ts strong, confident, he knows what he wants, but when he reacts of goes crazy mad it’s just... WOW!! His screams fits greatly with Scooby and Shaggy.
7. Gordon Ramsey
Tumblr media
Now this is a guest that Shaggy and Scooby would be delighted! One of the greatest cook, host of MasterChef and excellent food critict, but with the temper and the bittersweet personality that you don’t know if to hate him or to love him. If he DO appear, I’m begging to have him doing the sanwich talk to the antagonist; IT’S A MUST!!!
6.The Marx Brothers
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wasn’t born in the years of the black and white movies but I do enjoy them specially the comedies: that’s were I loved the Marx Brothers. Groucho, Harpo and Chico coud be involved to a time machime mystery or a hollywood thingy; any way I want to the two gang meet. Groucho’s sassy and flirty comedy (toward Daphne and Velma), Chico’s idiotic but sweet fun personality, and Harpo’s unpredictable way to crack us up it’s this kind of comedy that we need the new generation acknowleges this golden comedy.
5.Fran Drescher
Tumblr media
Remember the Nanny? Have you seen Happily Divorced? This woman nailed both shows with her charm and comedic style. I love specially her voice, it’s just perfect for a cartoon character!! (And her cartoon character of The Nanny intro doesn’t count)
4.Dick Dastardly and Muttey
Tumblr media
We already had The Funky Phantom introduced in the second episode, an Hanna Barbera tv series that was perfectly mixxed up with the Scooby Gang, so why not more characters from the same studios? Dick Dastardly and Muttey are a pair of malicious troublemakers that already starred three tv cartoon series as main antagonist. Remember the Wacky Races and The Flying Machines) I do want the gang meet this villian pair; maybe because they were framed of they are the main ghost or monster. I do think it would be interested to see Scooby with Muttey; Scoob would go to anything for a scooby snak, why the sneaky mutt for a medal.
3.Casper the Friendly Ghost
Tumblr media
With the Funky Phantom prooving that it’s possible to have REAL ghosts in this series, Casper it’s a must to be in! I loved this friendly ghost since the movie, and the tv show after this I ADORE IT! Don’t get me wrong, the first cartoon was adorable too, but the Spooktacular adventures were more comedic and more involve with Casper going far to be a goodie two shoes ghost. I do see the gang freaking out by this small ghost A LOT, but I can see clearly Velma don’t beliveing that Casper was actually a ghost, so they would help each other to solve the mystery. Seriously, I think Casper needs to get back in the 90s spirit way; never l liked his last tv show.
2.Will Smith/The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Tumblr media
I confess, I love Will Smith because of this show. And who doesn’t? This Will it’s all comedy and being bold and creative; this is material of Scooby and Shaggy’s classic scenes to fool them to get away. Of course flirting the girls it’s a must, and yes I also include Velma... (She’s still cute and valid, try to change my mind) But I think the best part it’s his scream. Seriously, when he screams it’s all strong and comedic; I specially love the MAMA NOOOO! I heard that’s not possible to have the show returning, so we can at least have this Will Smith cartoonized.
1.The Ghostbusters
Tumblr media
I loved the cartoons, the movies (including the new one)... I just think this would be great to add in the Scooby Doo show!! It’s a MUST!! Of course the main characters should to look like in the cartoons for sure. Of course, we’ll have Velma insisting that ghosts aren’t real and maybe she’ll point out the Ghostbusters to being a fraud, which Peter Venkman would pick on her with his charm. Egon would be genious contrast of Velma too. Winston would be more relaxed, I think... And Ray Stanz it’s like a magnet of weir events and accidents, can you imagine him with Scoob and Shaggy?! Hilarious!
Of course the villian get unmasked... But what if there was another thing involved and the Ghost busters take care of it at the end of the episode??+wink wink*
P.S.: Bill Murray voicing Peter, it’s also a must to happen!

On May 2nd one of my Facebook friends challenged me to post 10 albums that influenced my musical taste. One per day... Thinking about this has opened floodgates of memories. Though the only things I have in common with Proust are that I'm male and human I can kinda understand what inspired him to write Remembrance of Things Past. An interesting added fact is that he is credited with the concept of "cordon sanitaire" to control the spread of typhus.
Moments of our lives go out of existence before we're conscious of having lived them. It's only a relatively few moments that we get to keep and carry with us for the rest of our lives. These past three days have shown me that a disproportionate number of my memories are tied to music. I've also discovered that it's almost impossible to choose a whole album as an influence. For me it's about specific songs.
Musical preference and life, to me, are so intertwined that when one changes the other does. The babysitters my sister and I had during the summers of my youth introduced me to Jimmy Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Kiss and Lynyrd Skynyrd (glad the neighbors weren't always yelling FREEBIRD!). I segued into Rush and Pink Floyd after my cousins bought me "Dark Side of the Moon" and "2112" for birthday presents. Those two groups would supply the background theme of my life for many years.
I remember hearing Jethro Tull's "Teacher", Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" album and Emerson Lake and Palmer's "Still You Turn Me On" in the basement of my Aunt Midge's house. I also remember listening to country radio, while washing the car, with my Dad. "I Believe in You" by Don Williams, "Walk the Line" by Johnny Cash and "El Paso" by Marty Robbins.
One day I chose to stay in the car, because "Imagine" came on the radio, rather than go into a store with a girl. That may have been the beginning of the end of us... The music I chose during my early years was about possibilities and attitude. G&R's "Appetite for Destruction" album and Poison's "Nothing But a Good Time" played while I tried to bury some baggage under all kinds of excess.
"Where Have You Been" by Kathy Mattea signaled a real change in my life. I first heard the song not long after I met Sandy. It's become tied up with or lives and will always, to me at least, be our song. Did the song bring us closer together or do we love the song because it spoke our minds? Doesn't really matter. What's important is that it marks the beginning of our own sonata.
I have a lot of memories from my time in the Navy. One of the most vivid of them all is a day we were anchored off the island of Sicily. I stood on a catwalk, next to a crane, and watched the sun set over a wine dark sea while listening to Pachebel's "Canon in D". Magnificent...
Now the music that influences my musical taste, and life, is different. "Don't It" and "The Life" by Kenny Chesney. "Slow Burn" and "Late to the Party" by Kacey Musgraves. "Who Wouldn't Wanna Be Me" by Keith Urban. I feel like this music is oriented more toward storytelling and accepting the rhythm of life.
Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson got it right when he sang that "life is a long song but the tune ends too soon for us all". Our lives swing from rhapsody to crescendo to adagio. We all have our own beat underlying the transitions. The music that speaks to us, at any given time, really says who we are.
