Siblings: why are we at war?

Sibling Wars AKA Sibling Rivalry

ˈsɪblɪŋ/ ˈrʌɪv(ə)lri/ : “Competition between siblings especially for the attention, affection, and approval of their parents.”

I’m sure many of you can relate, right? Whether you’re the one who is winning the war, the one who’s losing it or the one who’s just being attacked without even realising that you’re a part of a war. 

But why are we at war? Is it really that deep?

Yea, for some people it is that deep. Deep enough to start a war anyway. But why?? In my opinion the most dominant cause is...

Jealousy: Jealousy occurs when you compare yourself to another person and feel animosity due to the fact that they have something that you don’t. In relation to sibling wars this jealousy is not just materialistically induced. For many siblings, this also includes jealousy towards the more complex aspects of life such as relationships and achievements. 

If one sibling has a stronger relationship with particular family members, or has more friends than another sibling. It can understandably lead to feelings of jealousy for the other sibling(s). Equally, if one sibling has achieved more than another, e.g. higher grades, a cabinet full of trophies, a more affluent job. This can also trigger feelings of jealously which only adds fuel to the flames of the war. 

Psychologically, these feelings of jealousy make a sibling feel as though something is being taken away from them and given to another. This may be the attention of a parent or an expensive birthday present, the sibling feels as though they are missing out and often place the blame on their sibling. This leads to even stronger feelings of animosity and resentment (fueling the fire).

“Sibling war” is a perfect way to refer to sibling rivalry... The impact can be extremely destructive and have long lasting effects. Anxiety, depression and low self esteem are just a few examples of the damaging impacts of sibling rivalry.

Hopefully this post will allow you all to understand and/or bare in mind the feelings of your siblings as well as yourself.
