there's out of character fanfiction where it's like: "yeah, I can tell that this interpretation is in fact based on this Character, but the writer has taken enough artistic liberties that it does become sorta unlikely." and you know, I'm okay with that. messing around with interpretation is part of the fun with transformative art. I'll rock with a fic that's a bit out there but still reminiscent of canon. like, I can tell we watched or read the same thing and that you have a very specific interpretation that's intuitive to you. that's great.

and then there's out of character fanfiction where it's like "hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. yeah. he would not fucking say that."

actually carrie white was right to destroy her entire town with her mind. perhaps even sanctioned by god.

She grinned.

"Carmen."

"...It wasn't as bad as it sounds."

Shadowsan breathed in deeply. Back in-- oh, what was it? 2003? He supposed it didn't really matter-- When she was young she'd been an actual terror. At one point they found themselves in between nannies and he and Brunt had been forced to shoulder the child rearing duties. It was during this time that he discovered the edifying wonders of "Conscious Discipline." It had offered plenty of interesting insight, but most importantly, he had learned to not not NOT let the child rule his mood. When dealing with the child, he had learned to breathe deeply and breathe deeply often.

It was amazing! Seventeen years later, and he was still using these techniques with his now twenty year old child. It just went to show: No matter how much time passes, she'd always have a knack for driving him to near close to cardiac arrest.

"Shadowsan? You with me?"

He sighed. "Yes, child. I am merely steeling myself in preparation for whatever horrors you're about to relay."

She chuckled. "Right... Just. Remember. You promised--"

"--Carmen. Just tell me what you did."

She bit down on her cheek, looking everywhere but at him.

"...It's uh. Well. Um. It's not entirely my fault, you know? Devineaux made an appearance so I had my hands full, you know? Keeping him out of the way and such, right?"

"...Go on."

"Well, Paper Star was also there."

Oh boy.

"...I kind of got nicked."

"Nicked." He dead panned.

"Grievously injured?"

He said nothing.

"Okay, fine. I died. Happy?"

Yeah. Okay. Fuck conscious discipline.

He let go of her hand as he threw his own in the air. "Happy?" He snarled, "Of course I'm not--!"

He abandoned speech in favor of checking her over with the frenzied desperation of a first time mother picking her child up from day care for the first time.

She shoved him away. "I'm fine." She insisted, "Look!"

She removed her choker to reveal a thin white line slashing across the length of her throat.

"It's barely a scar now!"

He pinched the bridge of his nose. Closing his eyes and throwing his head back, he tried to ride out the surge of anger, fear, and despair flash flooding his brain and washing away his sense.

"Carmen. Your-- You--"

He was rarely left floundering like this. Carmen alone had always had the unique ability to leave him speechless and flailing.

Had it hurt? Had she suffered? How long had she lain there choking on her own--

She grabbed his hands. He looked at her, breathing raggedly. He'd failed her, then. He hadn't protected her. If it weren't for-- if it weren't-- He did not like to call his feelings towards her parental, he didn't have that right, but who was he fooling? She'd always been like a daughter to him, and what kind of fa-- guardian-- was he if he had allowed for her to--

"I'm okay, Shadowsan. Really. I am."

He shook his head. "It should not have happened."

"Well, it did. And look. Here I am. Perfectly fine. Besides, you should have seen Devineaux's face, it was hilarious."

He closed his eyes.

"And just imagine! Paper Star will flip when she sees me again. I bet she thought she was good--"

His eyes snapped open.

"--That's the thing, Carmen. She was good. She--"

"--It wasn't permanent--!"

"--I need to meditate. We both need to meditate."

"Ugh! Shadowsan, I am not fourteen anymore! You can't just-- you promised you'd be calm!"

"That was before I found out you-- she slashed your throat, Carmen, you--"

"--I know, okay!"

Oh.

Oh, no.

She was trembling now, her eyes watering. Her hands went lax in his so he tightened his own grip, squeezing her hands.

"It's okay." He said, "It's okay."

Her breath hitched and she threw herself at him. He caught her and hugged her close. She sniffed slightly as she shook and they both pretended she wasn't actually crying.

"You're okay, child. I'm sorry. I'm sorry I reacted. You're okay."

"No," She said, voice muffled. "I'm sorry, I-- I--"

"There's nothing to apologize for. You did nothing wrong. I just--" He stopped to control his breathing. Theatrics were unbecoming of him. "--I hate that it had to happen. I hate that it happened to you."

She nodded jerkily against his chest. "Me too. I was-- I was so--"

"I know."

He forgot sometimes, how young she really was. Twenty was nothing in the grand scheme of things. She was a child. She was his child--

They had a lot to talk about. Really. They did.

But for now, he was content to just hold her. Comforting her.

It was okay. It was okay.

going off of the sheer amount of fanfiction i've read saying the contrary, I think this may be considered an unpopular opinion, but I firmly believe that player is like scary good at lying. I don't think he particularly likes lying, but he can, you know? like on the rare occasion that he has to, carmen will listen to him lie straight through his teeth like it's nothing and get really really concerned. because like. hello? where did you learn to do that? sir?

I don't know, watching s2e7 is so funny to me because this is the first time he's interacted with someone outside the team for a caper, and he immediately gets into the deception, fake accent and all. no hesitation. carmen switches the plan on him, and he's the one who has to relay that to gray while still maintaining the lie. and he does it! full confidence! and when graham pushes back, player pulls out the "haha yeah the crowds going crazy :)" and gets him to go along.

and hey! this plan was fucking ludicrous and stupid. I have such a love-hate relationship with this episode. it is everything to me. it's fucking idiotic. it's beautiful. it's a god damn joke. when the plan DOES eventually fall apart, that is not on player because buddy did his best with the silliest plan known to mankind. okay? he was ON it in this episode, I love it.

it's also the screening he did during the second act of the pilot. "strange people kept answering your phone!" and you kept calling?? did you have these silly goofy little lies already made? or were you just coming up with them on the fly?

or what about in season 4 when zack and ivy come to his school posing as exterminators? they can't agree on a lie and arrive at making up a new kind of insect, and player is so quick to back it up. the embodiment of "yes, and?" kid can roll with the punches, it's great.

like, there's a reason he and carmen are best friends. she was raised to be a thief and was pretty much born for their line of work, but player is kind of perfectly made for it as well. that's a guy who can continue a bit. his confidence with this stuff is both impressive and reckless, and it has GOT to keep carmen up at night. I love him.

I normally hate productions' of Carrie the Musical tendency to have Carrie kill Tommy, but I just finished The Garnet Valley production, and the way she snaps his neck with her bare hands rather than her powers was absolutely based??? Like damn, that was poignant, and I fw it severely.
