Because of this incident, Pan'er and Yue Wangfei had inexplicably gained an extra level of intimacy.

progress from the reading slump

just me rambling about the (danmei) titles I've been reading for the last few weeks while I'm trying to get out of my reading slump.

my "couple of pages every day" book: 九千岁 by 绣生 -- historical political intrigue with double rebirth, between a crown prince and a powerful (fake) eunuch

my "try a different media" audiodrama: 游龙随月 by Er Ya -- historical mystery action-adventure, between a war hero prince and a scholar/physician

my "try something different and random" book: 合意 by 楚寒衣青 -- modern romantic comedy with two CEO's

In my current mental state, these titles ended up in the perfectly awkward spot of "too good to be dropped outright" and "not interested enough to stay on my mind"

"read couple of pages every day": 九千岁 by 绣生

Synopsis: In the past life, the Crown Prince Yin Chengyu was deposed and exiled, but eventually returns to court and becomes the Emperor by making a deal with a powerful eunuch, Xue Shu. (Xue Shu is the gong, and a real eunuch in the first life.) They have a volatile relationship, and any genuine feelings they may have developed for each other cannot cut though their complicated power dynamic. YCY dies a few years into his reign due to ill health and overwork, and finds himself reborn as his younger self. He prevents XS from being castrated, but sneaks him into the palace as a fake eunuch and secretly helps him rise through the ranks. Eventually XS regains his memories of a previous life, and they work together to secure YCY's reign.

Current progress: 65% -- This novel has a lot of self-indulgent tropes. YCY, armed with the memories of a previous life, slowly but steadily takes down the people who wronged him in a past life. He swings between hot and cold while he tries to process his rage and feelings towards XS. As the party who had less power in the past life, it's comforting to see YCY getting the time and initiative to restart the relationship on his terms. YCY obviously wants to have a normal relationship with XS in this lifetime, and he can be downright ruthless in the way he flirts and teases the poor subordinate who isn't allowed to react. XS is just completely devoted to him; there isn't a rival in love for either of them across two lifetimes.

While their relationship arc is sweet, the story is just not that interesting or novel. We have seen all these tropes before, and even if I couldn't predict the exact ending, I feel like I can anticipate all the possibilities. There is a lot of substance in the political plot, as the Crown Prince travels all over the country to tackle serious cases of corruption, plague, bandit rebellion, foreign tribes, snow storms ... but every challenge feels like it's starting with a bang but ends with a whimper. Between YCY's knowledge of the future and the power he has consolidated in this lifetime, there is no real sense of suspense as he works through these "challenges". I don't find myself really "hooked" on this novel even though it sort of work as a comfort read.

"try other forms of media" : audiodrama of 游龙随月 by Er Ya

Synopsis: By the author of SCI Mystery Series, and with the same AD principal cast, this story is a historical-mystery-action-adventure, which I initially started in August. The Emperor's young uncle, Ninth Prince Zhao Pu, is a famous war hero and also famously dislikes defenseless scholars. He meets Gongsun Ce, an extremely smart scholar and physician, and becomes impressed by his skills and character (and beauty) as they travel to the capital together. As they deal with numerous cases ranging from scheming bandits to corrupt politicians, they are joined by Gongsun Ce's adopted son, a side CP of jianghu heroes, and other famous characters from the folktales of Justice Bao.

Current progress: 80% -- Both SCI and this series are technically fanfics based on the same cast of characters from a Hong Kong film, which in turn is based on Chinese history and folklore of Justice Bao. The author has written around 8 million words for these characters across three series/continuities, despite some controversy over the positioning of these stories as original fics vs fanfics (and as fanfics of the film vs historical domain characters) . The main couple in most of these series are actually the side CP in 游龙随月, so I plan to look into the other stories later.

With 游龙随月, I don't think the mystery aspect is handled effectively -- the audiodrama certainly feels like the action is being "told" rather than "shown". The relationship and characters that are cute at first got old really quickly. It often feels like the flirting gong and other characters who "sees through his true feelings" (including the kid) are pushing the tsudere-style shou into a relationship that he isn't ready for. And poor Xiao-Sizi, like so many kids in danmei, is reduced to a mascot to bring the couple together. I want to scream every time he is taught or rewarded for lying and other inappropriate behaviors just to bring the CP together. However, the production of AD is pretty good, and the chemistry of the side CP (voiced by the main CP in the AD's for SCI Mystery Series and Saye) is magnificent, so I still put it on when I have the time.

"try something random": 合意 by 楚寒衣青

Synopsis: This (relatively) short enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy starts with two CEO discovering their respective lovers are cheating with each other. However, Du Yanli comes through with his meticulously-managed image intact while Shan Yinsheng's emotional outburst ends up splashed across the tabloids. DYL signs strict contracts with his lovers to manage his relationships, so SYS asks to become a contracted lover to learn from his "excellent management of his personal life". While SYS's real goal is to ruffle DYL's impeccable feathers, he ends up falling in love for real. Meanwhile, DYL learns that his heart will not always stay within the bounds of his own contracts.

Current progress: 50% (but it's only 1/3 the length of the other two) -- The joy of this kind of romantic comedy is it's just so fun and free of tension. SYS thinks DYL is a high-strung and pretentious. DYL thinks SYS is an idiot for asking to become a contract lover. SYS wants DYL to fall in love with him to make a point, and then realizes he may have fallen for DYL for real. DYL thinks SYS is capricious and unreliable, but ... ends up chasing down pickpockets with him ob a bicycle during an island vacation??? I'm not sure what I was looking for in this novel, and I certainly didn't know what to expect, but it's been a fun ride so far.

yes, several! i really regret not taking a figurative sculpture class while at university. i would love to learn wood carving, stone carving or bronze casting.

quilt - how do you take your tea (or coffee)?

i don’t drink much coffee, but when i do i like cream and sugar. i love tea, i used to work in a tea shop and amassed quite the collection. i drink it straight, unless it’s a fruity ice tea in the summer. i could wax poetic about tea for a long time. i prefer to steep it in a gaiwan, starting out very short then drawing it out. i like all sorts, but especially roasted oolongs (anxi and taiwanese), malty black teas and aged shu pu-er. my favorite tea company is ‘verdant tea’, love the teas from laoshan village, they work directly with the family farmers.

The most mysterious bookstore in Shanghai — Toyou Yu Ting hides two mountains in Jean Nouvel’s newly designed building

Wutopia Lab’s Toyou Bookstoredesigned for the CIFI Group opened to the public on May 1, 2021, and in just three weeks, this new bookstore became the No.1 in the ranking bookstore and audio-visual stores in Huangpu District by Popular Review. It has become a popular bookstore in this popular building, The Roof designed by Jean Nouvel.

The visible mountain and the invisible mountain Toyou Bookstore got its name from Big You Mountain and Little You Mountain. “Er” in Chinese indicates the number “two”. The two mountains are the site where scholars preserved books from burning by Qin Shi Huang. It is a symbol of the continuity of Chinese culture in the future. Taking the two mountains as the theme of my design, I decided to spatialize the two abstract and symbolic mountains into the bookstore.

Er You’s backstory The name of the bookstore and the concept came from the creative happenstance of Mr. Lin Feng of CIFI Group. The bookstore’s philosophy that takes books as mountains, poems as books, flowers as decorations, tea as fragrance, and wine as companion, forms the spirit of the entire bookstore. If, “Er You” (in Chinese character) add a dot, it becomes the character “wine”, this is a magical touch to link the concept and life together by Lin Feng, both a book and wine lover.

Little You Mountain The design therefore became simple and straightforward. When the reader enters the door, he or she will see a white mountain, which is a book-shelf made of white artificial stone. The light comes through the stone wall, and then it looks like a light mountain, which is the Little You Mountain of the Toyou Bookstore. The visible Little You Mountain is the recommended area for new and fine books in the Toyou Bookstore.

Big You Mountain There is no distinctive visual image of the Big You Mountain in the Toyou Bookstore. Readers need to walk through the bookshelves and partitions to get to the main space of the bookstore, which is actually the interior of the Big You Mountain. The Big You Mountain is invisible because it’s too big. As the old saying goes, you can’t see the real face of the mountain, but only be thankful to be in the mountain.

I abstracted the interconnected caves into the spatial experience we are used to, rather than a realistic simulation. The continuous burgundy perforated aluminum panels forming the caves and the bookshelves forming various corners and spaces to sit in are in fact the interlocking caves in Big You Mountain. It is in this cave that the reader finds the secret book waiting to be uncovered. The typological refinement of the cave helps the architect to use the organization of bookshelves, partitions, commodities and book arrangements to create a very rich spatial experience in a small space, so that there are surprises everywhere and identical views at every step.

Chineseness “Having a view every step of the way” is actually a basic technique of traditional Chinese garden design. When the readers realizes that, they cannot help but associate the experience of the Big and Little You Mountain with the tour of the garden. There are a lot of metaphors which the architect hides in those scenes. The shining white mountain behind the transparent glass outside the store (you open the door and your see the mountain, means “straightforward”), the well at the side of the Little You Mountain and the dripping spring (the old saying: the mountain is not about its height, the water is not about its depth), the Chineseness and a hint of Zen which readers would suddenly find out, defines it as a modern Chinese bookstore in the true sense of the word.

The Secret Place The circular space between the two mountains is the secret place. It is the bookstore owner’s private space, like a jug, in which there is heaven and earth, mountains, rocks, pines, books, wine and the himself, a cave in the midst of Shanghai’s glitz and glamour.

Toyou Bookstore is an entrance to understand Shanghai The client Mr. Lin from CIFI Group wants to make a special bookstore. He felt that most of the bookstores we encounter everyday only sell books and some cultural and creative products. He wanted to create a bookstore that showcases a lifestyle, is able to combine flowers, wine, tea and carefully selected books. Since designing the first Zhong Shu Ge flagship store in Songjiang, Yu Ting has been reluctant to design the so-called pure but dry traditional bookstores favored by fundamentalism.

He believes that bookstores should not only attract people who love books but also accept ordinary people who do not love reading. A bookstore should be a miniature cultural complex, a social and cultural place with strong attractions in the context of the Internet-driven world. He felt that Mr. Lin’s concept was right in line with his vision, which is why Yu Ting took on this design.

Life The main space of Big You Mountain is divided into two zones, one is the reading area with layers and layers of corners. The other is the living area dominated by the long circular tables that Yu Ting calls “living color”. On the table like a scroll, you can have coffee, tea, wine, reading, incense, floarr and the leisure mood to take a few bites. This scroll is a concentrated expression of the complex commercial environment envisioned by Mr. Lin and Mr. Yu. But not only that, readers will find that in addition to exhibitions and roadshows, there are also ubiquitous flowers dotting the entrance to the cave, bookshelves, bars, tables and even the entrance to the bookstore. The so-called immortal mountain, where flowers bloom in all four seasons, stands for knowledge, the only thing that passes on to a hundred generations.

Emotion Yu Ting believes that architects can take the bookstore as a tool to understand the city and its people, then make a positive response to the culture of the city. Each bookstore can be a brief, or long enough, or very long time kind of comprehension and reaction. This kind of reaction makes the bookstore and the city benefit from each other. Unlike other bookstores designed by Yu Ting, the response of Toyou Bookstore is quiet, like a small poem. It is not a long poem, or a modern poem with an intense rhythm, it is not aggressive, it is very calm and even a little classical. Quiet is actually a very rare emotion for Yu Ting.

Because his life is full of various twists and turns. With his sensitive personality, Yu Ting was not able to be particularly quiet. When designing and building the bookstore, a person who is not very quiet needs to face all kinds of anxiety from people. The subtle anxiety is like a slight breeze at first, and then it may be a little bit like a dark tide that is about to engulf people, Yu Ting has to be calm and quiet, and only when he can overcome himself can he comfort others.

This is a quiet bookstore created by Yu Ting’s attempt to control the disturbance. Looking back on so many bookstores he has done, this bookstore can be said to be the most emotionally calm and the most soothing, with a smile during the wandering period, instead of all kinds of surprise or cheering, so the emotion here is quiet.

Shortcut The reader learns about the world through books and knows how to better understand the world or understand other people. Through the bookstore, a tiny world carefully created by the architect, readers now have a shortcut to understand the wider world more directly. Therefore, Toyou Bookstore, a tiny world carefully shaped by Yu Ting, can become a portal for readers or visitors to gain a deeper understanding of Shanghai.

It took only 40 days to build this entrance. Toyou Bookstore embodies all the difficult training and thinking, and at the end it all shows an incredible ease, which is what Yu Ting understands as the essence of Chinese aesthetics.

Baozi Inn: Affordable and Delicious Northern Chinese Street Food and Small Eats in London’s Soho

Name: Baozi Inn Where: 24 Romilly Street, London W1D 5AH, https://baoziinn.com/ Cost: There is an excellent value set lunch at £8.90 of meat or vegetable main course + two cold dishes from the chef's selection of the day + a bowl of jiaozi dumplings in broth. Alternatively, choose grilled lobster + beer at £18.90, with choice of Asian bottled beer (Tsingtao 1903, Sapporo or Chang) or draft beer (Franziskaner, Dutch Hertog Jan or Leffe Blonde). The selection of beers is impressive. About: Opened in March 2018 on the site of the former Bar Shan, this is the third Baozi branch in London opened by restaurateur Shao Wei. Baozi Inn’s sister restaurants include Baiwei (reviewed here) and Bar Shu, the group’s flagship at the busy corner between Frith and Romilly Streets (reviewed here).

Baozi Inn was named after the Cantonese baozi dumpling, filled with pork or vegetable, the name also refers to the communal canteens that were introduced during the time of Chairman Mao. Baozi Inn specializes in the eponymous dumplings, and Northern Chinese street food with a smattering of Sichuanese and Shanghainese dishes like barbecued skewers, Dan Dan noodles and Kao Fu. The offering is generally of small eats intended to be shared and served with beer, although there is a very extensive menu of fine wines and spirits.

The restaurant also offers an all-day Cantonese dim sum menu with Sichuanese and Hunanese influences which I am hoping to try in my next visit. Baozi Inn is in the heart of Soho between Old Compton Street and Shaftesbury Avenue, and being originally a Georgian townhouse, has an intricate layout with many adjoining rooms. The restaurant is set over three floors within the building.

What We Ate: We started with a selection of cold dishes. Sichuanese ginger juice spinach (£4.50), served with goji berries and soybeans was refreshing and well seasoned with a great depth of flavour.

Kao Fu (marinated wheat gluten with peanuts and black fungus), is a Shanghainese vegetarian cold appetizer (£4.80) and a personal favourite, it was sweet, savoury and exactly as my dear friend, Shanghainese foodie extraordinaire Jason Li (of the Shanghai Dreams Supper Club) makes them.

I also enjoyed the cloud ear fungus in pickled chillies and vinegar (£4.50) – this had great texture and kick of hot chilli and garlic.

Sesame prawn on toast (£4.50 for 2 pieces) was impressive - made using Chinese steamed (mantou) buns, filled with prawn and then deep-fried, it was a far cry from the usual fare we know of. Served with a passionfruit mayonnaise, they were delicious.

The mixed skewer platter (£17.50), came with two each of cumin lamb, pork belly and chicken skewers. The northern Chinese lamb skewers were tender and sweet, with a warming heat on the finish. For me, the pork and chicken skewers were unfortunately a tad dry.

We had two of their signature baozi dumplings, one pork and one vegetarian, the latter having a pale green colour from spinach juice (£5.20 for 2). The vegetarian bun was filled with radish, noodles and black fungus, and both were fluffy, tender and very well seasoned.

The award-winning jiaozi dumplings included pork (£5) and prawn green jiaozi with XO sauce (£6.90). Both made on the premises by hand, and were succulent and delicious. There was a great depth of flavour and umami in the XO sauce.

Squid ball skewers (£5.20 for 4 pieces) had a crisp coating with a soft interior.

Spicy beef shin noodles in broth (£13.80) was a deliciously hearty bowl beef, noodles and smoked bamboo shoots, which imparted to the broth an intense flavour and richness. A fantastic dish.

Dan Dan noodles (£10.80) were tender and fresh, served in a spicy and flavoursome sesame and peanut sauce, minced pork and Sichuanese preserved mustard greens (Ya Cai).

The lobster in fragrant spicy chilli sauce with a choice of beer (£18.90), we went for a glass of Belgian Leffe, came with red chilli oil, Sichuan pepper, ginger, green beans, celery and onion. This is such as a good deal and I really wanted to love it, but for me, the lobster was a tad overcooked and so tough.

What We Drank: We had a glass each of the draft beers Franziskaner Weissbier (£4.50), Hertog Jan from the Netherlands (£3.80) and Belgian Leffe Blond (£3.80) as well as a bottle of Tsingtao 1903 Premium beer (£4). Baozi Inn’s range of good quality beers is impressive.

We finished with a pot of Yunnan Pu Er tea (£3.80). It is served in a tiny cup from a tiny pot, but comes with a flask of boiling water which allows for plenty of top ups. Likes: One of the most interesting and innovative drinks menus of any Chinese restaurant in town. I enjoyed the Shanghainese cold starters, the baozi and jiaozi dumplings hand-made on the premises, and the great range of draft European beers. Dislikes: the much anticipated lobster was a bit of a let down. Verdict: Baozi Inn serves Northern Chinese street food, Sichuanese and Shanghainese small eats that are affordable and of good quality. It is great to see this new addition to the Bar Shu group, raising the bar of Chinese cooking and drinks offering in London. Recommended.
