During games, the opposite team's fans would chant "Asshole, asshole, speedy fucking asshole" everytime Neil had the ball to throw him off his game.

By the end of the season, Neil gave an interview saying "Oh, I thought they were cheering for me. Was I supposed to be offended? Do better."

And thats how Neil's fans adopted the chant and now they sing it every game he plays. Losing only for the classic, "run fast, faster, even fuckin' faster Josten is out, he's goin' to get ya"

I could write whole fucking essays about Ted Lasso’s nuanced exploration of class and masculinity and the myriad ways in which men are socialized to hurt one another through the medium of sport but because I’m lazy as hell I simply present these two screencaps in which the boy who was probably bullied in showers just like this one learns that he was, in this instance, the bully. This is so much more than a pandemic era feel-good comedy, I’m just - yeah. Holy shit.

Incredible how Ted Lasso lures you into s1 with the false sense of safety of watching a silly little feel-good comedy show about a clueless American and then 3 seasons later hits you like a truck with that silly American crying in front of his mother because he finally recognizes he’s afraid of getting close to his own son because of his abandonment issues after his father’s suicide when he was a child.
