Show Time!: Mixing erotica, sex positivity, and TV idols

Spoilers for Show Time!

Shows like Oshi no Ko and The Many Sides of Voice Actor Radioexpose some of the dark underbelly of the Japanese entertainment industry—I hadn’t expected a goofy desire to earn the title of Hentai Master to lead me into finding a series with similarly hard-hitting themes. Declaring Show Time! as part of an entertainment criticism pantheon may overstate its importance in the anime sphere. However, this hentai uses its erotic elements to explore issues and humanize actresses in a way those other shows for general audiences cannot. Its surprisingly progressive critiques of idol and purity culture dished out alongside a rich course of fantasy has caused it to quickly become a personal problematic favorite.

Show Time! is based on the manga Even Miss Minami Wants to Have Sex whose title explains the basics of where its plot, in both a literal and memetic sense, comes from. The series begins with widower Shouji and his daughter Kana struggling emotionally after the death of his wife, her mother. Then “The Sing Along! Show” comes on the air and the adorable antics of Miss Minami and Pao helps brighten up both Kana and her father’s life. An unlikely set of circumstances revolving around a canceled live performance and Shouji trying to soothe a reasonably upset Kana by getting her a parfait in a crowded restaurant, leads the duo to meet the woman behind the TV character, Takasaki Minami. Then in an unsurprising hentai twist, the two protagonists end up boinking like bunny rabbits.

There’s far more than a surface level fantasy of horizontally tangoing with a famous TV actress occurring here though. The anime discusses the difficult obligations Minami faces as a children's television performer. She’s forbidden from having romantic relationships. Her dreams of making children happy compelled her to pursue a career where she is forced to perform for happy families while being unable to pursue the kind of relationships necessary to have a family of her own.

Even just having a boyfriend has destroyed idol’s careers and these bans have been enforced in Japanese courts as legally binding. In the United States, all it takes is being in a video satirizing abstinence only sex education to get fired as a TV host for kids. So just imagine the kind of media storm getting caught having actual sex would cause, in either country!

I’m sorry to hear that you’re sick! I hope you feel better soon, my friend :)

However… oh my god. That’s a lot of work… I mean, I’ll do it, of course, but… oh my god. I’ll still do it. Anything for you. You’re lucky that Show Time has a very small official cast- only four members that belong to me!

(One of the main cast members, Pix, belongs to my friend Doll. But all the characters I will be talking about- Vexx, Dislan, CEO, and Bi- all belong to me!)

I will only be answering questions that apply to the story! For example, the question about shipping that OC with a canon character would obviously be impossible for me to answer since this is a completely original story.

Before we get started, I should at least talk about the species of the characters in Show Time, since there are a lot of not-humans in this story. Dislan is a TV-Head, and Vexx and Bi are these anthro pseudo-fox creatures. I really don’t know how else to describe them.

Without further ado! Let’s get into it :)

1) Does your OC have a voice claim, if so who?

Vexx and Bi do not have voice claims, but Dislan and Pix do!

Dislan sounds like Will Stetson- and the songs that inspired me specifically are his covers of Dramaturgy, Lagtrain, and Bug.

CEO sounds like Lulu Grey! If you want to hear what she sounds like, take a look at Man On The Internet’s cover of Attack of the Killer Queen ;)

2) Who's your OCs best friend? How did they become best friends?

The main trio of Show Time- Vexx, Pix, and Dislan- are all close friends from nearly the beginning of the story. Vexx and Dislan bonded first after Vexx tackled Dislan and nearly cracked his screen open. And they became friends with Pix after she harbored them despite the fact that they were wanted fugitives.

CEO joins the group a lot later through the story… but those are spoilers, unfortunately! Sorry :)

Bi has no friends. Well, he does, but none that are developed. He doesn’t deserve any.

3) What song describes your OC?

Despite being the protagonist, Vexx does not have any songs that I can think of off the top of my head that remind me of her :( sorry girlie

The songs mentioned in the voice claim section above for Dislan are all fitting… and I can’t think of any more, unfortunately.

The same is with CEO, but Usseewa by Ado is also a very fitting song for her! :)

As for Bi… sighs. The Data Stream by the Stupendium.

8) What hobbies does your OC have? What do they do to unwind?

No one gets a fucking break in this story and no one is allowed to “unwind” ever.

Just kidding. Some characters have hobbies! Like Bi, for example, likes hunting. Dislan has some very minor interest in theater, but unfortunately lives in a world where there is no time for art or joy ever. Meanwhile, CEO loves tinkering with hardware and some bigger machines.

9) How does your OC handle their physical health? Do they take care of themselves?

Luckily, Dislan is a TV-Head, so he doesn’t have to worry much about his physical health! Taking care of himself consists of making sure that he is charged and that everything is running properly.

Bi LOVES taking care of himself. He likes looking healthy, with clean fur and a good build. It’s easy to take care of yourself when you’re rich… and unfortunately, Vexx doesn’t have that luxury. She takes care of herself when she can, but that’s a little hard to do when you’re on the run.

CEO is ALL about taking care of yourself and being fit. She is VERY healthy and will whip you into shape as well.

10) How does your OC handle their mental health? Do they take care of themselves?

Dislan has anxiety practically programmed into him, unfortunately, but the “mental health” equivalent for a robot would probably be like… bugs or viruses? He tends to avoid those and seek help for any issues he has, so he does take care of himself. When it comes to emotional problems, though, he’s a little lost on how to handle those.

Bi, unfortunately, is too confident to have terrible mental health. Vexx also takes care of herself and has pretty stable mental health.

As for CEO, she ALSO loves taking care of herself mentally. She’s just awesome like that.

11) What was your inspiration for your OC?

Vexx and Dislan were both kind of spur-of-the-moment OC ideas that just… came to me. I would say that their original dynamic was very, very loosely inspired off of W.D. Gaster and Alphys, but their characters have developed far, far beyond that.

CEO, meanwhile, can lend her inspiration (personality-wise) to Queen from Deltarune. Which I think is immensely funny.

I can’t remember if Bi was inspired by anything specific, but I think I realized I just needed some foil to the main characters, so I crafted him and slipped him in there. He’s the worst.

12) Does your OC interact with other people's OC? If so, who's their best OC friend?

I haven’t roleplayed with my Show Time cast, like, at all… but luckily, my friend Doll has an OC of her own in Show Time! Pix (another TV-Head) is a good friend of the main cast, and they all have a very friendly and affectionate relationship with her.

13) Does your OC have a rival? How did it start?

Arguably, CEO and Pix are rivals… It's complicated.

14) Who's a character your OC cannot stand! It's on sight when they see them!

Everyone hates Bi Solomon.

And, fun fact! Everyone used to hate CEO, then they learned that she was totally swag and awesome, so they became friends with her.

16) How's their relationship with their parents? Are they alive?

I have very vague storyline ideas about Vexx’s parents, but nothing concrete and nothing that’s not a spoiler. Sorry. :/

18) What are their pronouns? What would they like to be called?

Vexx- (she/her)

Dislan- (he/him)

CEO- (she/her)

Bi- (he/him)

Oh my god everyone is cis in this story. I’m so sorry that was completely accidental.

19) What's their sexuality? What's their love language both giving and receiving?

Gee, I never thought about the sexualities of these characters…

Vexx- Not interested in romance or sex, tbh. Doesn’t know what a label is and doesn’t care.

Dislan- Biromantic, quite literally asexual.

CEO- Aroace <3

Bi- Probably heterosexual, but also doesn’t give a damn about labels.

20) If they fight, what's their weapon of choice?

Most of them like guns. Bi likes hunting rifles. Vexx and Dislan both use a pistol at some point in the story, but neither are too happy about it.

CEO is fine with guns, and does also use a pistol, but she also has batons that she uses for close-range combat.

22) Fight or Flight? Are they a lover or a fighter?

Vexx’s first instinct is to fight. As a species that has more recently gained sentience (in the past couple centuries or so), Vexx’s fight or flight instincts are pretty overwhelming, and she usually chooses to fight. However, deep down, she’d rather love than fight.

The same is with Bi- but, being older than Vexx, he has a bit more wisdom and control over his emotions so they won’t get the better of him. He still fights, but has enough conscience to grab a rifle if he feels he’s in danger.

Dislan is a lover through and through. Never put him in a situation where he has to fight EVER. When it comes to fight or flight, his reaction is to flee.

CEO is a lover who isn’t afraid to fight to get what she wants. She’s very good at evaluating whether she should fight or flee, so I can’t definitively say she’d do one or the other.

23) Is your OC reliable? Can I call them up at two in the morning if I have a flat tire?

All of them are very reliable! CEO especially would love to help with a flat tire.

The other three don’t know what a car is and will probably just stand around looking confused.

30) My OC and your OC are friends. This isn't a question. I'm not asking. (How do they respond?)

Vexx is a very good friend to have! She is very steadfast and loyal, and is not afraid to speak her mind whenever she feels that you are being slighted. You two will likely develop a very strong bond- Vexx tends to do that with people.

Dislan is also a very nice friend to have. He’s very friendly and kind, and is always willing to listen to your problems and provide comfort. Have you ever had cuddles from a walking touchscreen? He’s very warm and loves hugs. 10/10 buddy. He’s super friend-shaped.

If you’re friends with CEO, that speaks volumes about your character. CEO is wonderfully reliable, and has a great sense of humor and a compassionate soul. She has your back and will look out for you for the rest of both of your lives.

If you’re friends with Bi, that says terrible things about your character. His friends are usually people who share a similar worldview to him, and… well…

That’s also a spoiler. But let it be known that he’s not a great person.
