COVID and the Arts
The existence of algorithm-driven, non-chronological "timelines" is very bizarre right now. On my Facebook feed, I see posts from March 10 talking about starting the second week of previews or celebrating good box office returns. On March 12, my job ceased to exist, as did the jobs of hundreds upon hundreds of people as an entire industry shuttered over the course of one day.
The cancellations and closing of events and arts/entertainment venues, while important for public health, have left many people (who earn on a gig basis rather than salary) very suddenly and entirely without expected income. There is no work-from-home option, just their job disappearing entirely. Some people will be able to collect unemployment insurance, but many won't even get that, as they work as independent contractors who are paid a fee for work delivered or vend their goods directly to customers at such events.
This is a tough time for arts/events organizations and those who work them (which includes not just artists but all of the ushers, custodians, etc. whose work is tied to the event itself). I'm compiling ways to support those who have been impacted (pass-the-hats for donating to individuals, funds that are accepting donations, ways to purchase people's goods/services, etc.) and resources for those who have been impacted. The industry community is coming together in a heartening way right now, but it would mean a great deal to me if those not in the industry could take a moment to glance through and maybe even to share this information. Even if you can't make any sort of donation yourself, it means something to have this hardship be seen and acknowledged.
Additionally, if you have tickets to events that have been canceled and don't immediately need your funds returned, I encourage you to wait a bit before reaching out to the theater/venue/etc.. Box office workers have been overwhelmed. And particularly if it was a ticket for a non-profit or grassroots organization, if it's possible, I'd encourage people to consider donating the cost of their ticket rather than demanding a refund.
While I'm aware that there are many people in many sectors taking a hit right now, I am putting my focus on where I am and would like to keep that the focus here. Please share any relevant updates, additional resources, etc..

THIRST AID KIT | S6E11 | THE SWEET THIRST OF ‘SWEET MAGNOLIAS’
Oh, hey there, thirst-buckets!
Tumblr media
This many months into the pandemic and the necessary social distancing we’ve all been dutifully undertaking (right? RIGHT?), we find that thirst has taken on new forms and textures. In a nutshell, whatever ways we were exploring thirst in the first week of March have evolved to accommodate six months of enhanced aloneness... 👀. It led us down different paths.
And so when Netflix dropped Sweet Magnolias earlier this summer, we were intrigued. We watched the show — 10 episodes aka the work of a single weekend, if you have nothing but box braids to do plus the determination to succeed — and immediately decided to venture down the path of sweet, PG-rated thirst this episode because we were immediately OBSESSED. This episode is us honoring the very specific charm of this over-the-sweater action of a TV show and so if you’re ready... let’s pour it out! (see what we did there?)
Tumblr media
OK. So the show is about three women and their almost-lifelong friendship: Helen, Dana Sue, and Maddie, in the small, sweetly sleepy town of Serenity, South Carolina, their lives and loves and woes, plus those of a whole slew of characters in the town around them. There are smoldering looks between exes, the exploration of something new (or not so new 👀) after a... drought, on-off entanglements that sadly preclude the sense God gave even a goose... and it’s all wrapped in a SFW picnic basket of subtle, Southern thirst-language and behavior.
And it’s lovely! It’s been a tonic for us to travel down to Serenity and be in a world where the thirst is ample but restrained, and the problems are human-sized rather than bombastic and implausible. There’s so much to celebrate: Serenity is a town full of the riches of human variation, and whatever you might be looking for... it’s probably here. Shoutout to Coach Cal, Hot Farmer Jeremy, Chef Erik, Dana Sue’s ex Ronnie... It’s clear that everyone in Serenity is Doing It, but it’s all very tasteful fade-to-black style, in a way that makes this a genuine example of “a show for the whole family.” And we enjoyed it! WILD. There’s a lesson in seeking one thing and coming away with another thing altogether and finding that... it’s not bad at all. What a refreshing treat, thirst-buckets.
There are lots of laughs in this episode, a good number of swoons, some bone deep sighing, and we hope you discern the truly deep and somewhat unlikely love (bearing in mind out usual romance and TV habits!) we have for this show. And in Fanfic Wars, we both chose to travel down one single path... and it led straight to Erik Whitley’s door. Man, listen. 🥰

Episode 216: "Big T" - Thurl Bailey
Some may know or remember "Big T" Thurl Bailey as the man who was part of the 1983 National Championship team with North Carolina State, who was coached by Coach Jim Valvano. He was drafted in the first round of the NBA draft and played 12 of his 16 professional seasons in the National Basketball Association between the Utah Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves organizations.
What most don't know however, is the fact that Thurl's basketball talents didn't necessarily come naturally. He had the passion for the sport and the dedication and willingness to get better,  but he truly had to WORK at it to be where he's at.
Find out today on the show just how he was able to go from playing 2 seconds a game (the tip offs) in Junior High, to becoming a National Champion in College, to then playing 16 years as a professional (12 of which were in the NBA). It's truly one you want to pay attention to.
Major shoutout to my cousin John Elmer, who helped me land this interview with Thurl. John is a sports fan just like me. And when he was at his local gym working out, he went out of his way to communicate with Thurl who happened to be there too, and got him in contact with me! This interview wouldn't have happened without John's support and willingness to reach out for me! So for that I want to say thanks to John! Love ya man!!
I would love for all to check out Thurl's book, by going to:
https://thurlbailey.com/
I promise you one thing, after listening to this interview, you're going to see exactly why the people of Utah have embraced this man with open arms! He's a man of character, who is well-spoken and respectful to all! I've always had a respect for Thurl, but didn't truly realize how unbelievably impactful he was until I spoke with him!
Enjoy the interview!

1. I’m making an attempt to learn books from all all over the world, and I’ve discovered books from most areas. One space I’m having hassle with, although, is Japanese Europe. I don’t need to get slowed down studying books from 100 or extra years in the past, and would favor extra trendy works. Do you have got any ideas? Thanks! -Erin
2. My 9 yr previous daughter doesn’t wish to learn most fiction or non-fiction books in any respect.  The one factor she enjoys are graphic novels; she has additionally lately gotten into anime.  Her favorites are Spirited Away (film and graphic novels), and the Click on collection; she additionally loved the primary Sanity & Tallulah ebook.  Any recs it’s important to preserve this flame going could be appreciated!
-Lee
3. Hey guys! Hope you’re each doing nicely and staying secure throughout these loopy instances. I apologize upfront for being so, so tacky, however I’m determined, sorry. With the pandemic STILL happening, I haven’t been in a position to see my girlfriend in ages and truthfully I simply want some reads to remind me of her, even when it does make me miss her much more. I’m not very versed in romance, so I do not know the place to start out. I’m in search of w/w romances which might be very candy, with out a lot angst or battle, however with some steaminess. I’d significantly like for the love curiosity to be a shy/candy/cinnamon position kind of character.
-Celina
4. I noticed that studying image books to my 4 yr previous is the perfect a part of my day day-after-day now, and I’m leaning in to this. I’m maxing out my library checkouts and simply utilizing this time to learn each ebook I ever needed to to her. I’d wish to advocate that everybody even non mother and father try some image books quickly, because it’s typically a satisfying temper changer for me. Please advocate pretty image books for us listeners.
-Brooke
5. Hello associates, As we proceed to shelter-in-place my wanderlust is reaching peak ranges… which isn’t aided by the tip of a two-year relationship (with a fellow journey lover). I’m feeling strongly about some kind of less-cliche model of an “Eat Pray Love” journey to plan after quarantine as my 40th yr approaches.
I liked Nichol’s “No One Tells You This,” — could be all in favour of both a memoir or maybe epic fiction with feminine protagonist. Epic, literary fiction set overseas that I’ve loved embrace: Shantaram, A Nice Steadiness, Home on the Fringe of the Evening, Past the Sky and the Earth: A Journey Into Bhutan….
Nations of curiosity embrace Italy (artwork historical past main right here! however please no Cusk or Ferrante) or actually, anyplace.
Admire y’all!
-Christine
6. Do you have got any suggestions of fantasy novels which have older (30s-40s) feminine protagonists? One thing like Blackthorn and Grim collection by Juliet Marillier.
-RV
5. Hello,
I lately found this podcast and have actually loved it. Thanks for the good work! Shoutout to your “The best way to Be Your self” suggestion – I learn it and thought it was so useful.
I lately completed A Little Life, and I’m sort of at a loss for what to learn subsequent. I used to be particularly moved by how nicely I felt the creator adopted the characters throughout their lives and the overall theme of tracing prior occasions and their ramifications throughout time. Do you have got suggestions of fiction or non-fiction books that equally seize these themes? I’d desire one the place the “throughout time” is occurring in more moderen years (much like A Little Life) relatively than far again in historical past though open to something
Thanks!
-EV

THIRST AID KIT | S3E08 | A WHOLE YEAR, FAM
WE’RE A WHOLE ENTIRE YEAR OLD. 😭
*cue Stevie Wonder*
Tumblr media
It’s not everyday Thirst Aid Kit turns ONE YEAR OLD. And so we have an extra special episode here for ya — from southern men to British baes, newbies to Zaddies, french fries to hearty snacks, we tried to show love to all the baes we’ve loved before and we’re thrilled you’ve been along for the ride. We’re talking messages from former guests across the seasons of Thirst Aid Kit, from super-listener thirst-buckets, and from the celebrity world [SPOILER: YES, CHRIS EVANS]. And so many other treats. Grab a chilled drink and a fan and get buckled in! Let’s go!
We began with a real ‘Behind The Candelabra’ Moment where we revealed what goes into our much-misunderstood opening segment, [REDACTED]. We chose some of the most-requested episodes: our very first, starring Andre 3000 (😍), and of course our two patron saints, John Cho, and Keanu Reeves (spoiler: we were drinking cider in that [REDACTED]. Innocent cider!)
Tumblr media
Shoutout to every single producer and editor we’ve ever had on Thirst Aid Kit – your flawlessly applied beeps have helped to take our sweet but suggestive little tributes into the realm of filth and joy. Shoutout to Eleanor Kagan, Julia Furlan, Agerenesh Ashagre, Meg Cramer, Megan Detrie, Neena Pathak, TK Dutes, and Camila Salazar. 🤗😘
We moved on to talking about out fave moments from the three seasons of TAK. We all have our faves, but we chose three, one from each season, starting with Oscar Isaac, our Season 2 opening episode. We laughed a lot about just how ridiculous Oscar’s bit in the not-great In Secret? Remember?
youtube
Ah, memories!
We also cackled at our over-the-top reaction to that scene in Creed, and how Michael Bae Jordan made us feel like we could tackle our to do lists FOREVER. And then we reminisced about the time Gena-Mour Barrett, The Perv’s Perv, came on the show in our Loony For Toons episode, and went HAM on a) Kovu from The Lion King 2; and b) Winnie the Pooh. Nichole said she enjoyed the way Winnie the Pooh ate honey, and Gena chimed in and said he “gobbles it up.” JESUS CHRIST.
Tumblr media
Then of course, we got into one of our listeners’ favorite segments: Fanfic Wars. Between us, we have written more than fifty (50!) short stories over the course of this year, and well, we love writing those drabbles! So we went a little deep on our faves, and what they say about us and and very specific kinks (Bim: men doing housework. Nichole: men doing... housework 👀). We chose from across all the seasons, so! Nichole went back to the John Cho episode. Excerpt below:
He places the bouquet on the bar, and gathers my hand against his cheek. He waits until I return his gaze and says, “maybe we wished on the same star as children. Maybe you’re the princess I died slaying a dragon for in another life. Maybe this is a type of hell where our punishment is knowing we’ll never have another love like this. I don’t know. But whatever I did to deserve you, I’d do it again and again, and again.” The woman behind me lets out a soft, “damn.”
Bim also chose from the first season, picking the drabble she wrote for Andrew Lincoln:
The wave in his hair gets tighter the further back you go, and because he hasn’t had a haircut recently — at my insistence, I have to admit — the curls gather and sit right on his collar, making my hands itch to touch. I must have made a sounds because he turns off the tap before turning to me. His face is a little flushed, from the steam, I presume, and he’s smiling. The smile reaches his eyes but I don’t linger there. Instead I let my eyes rest on one of my favorite features of his: that noble nose.
Tumblr media
And there are other drabbles besides!
We also did a very special thing this episode: a MUTUAL WEDDING PROPOSAL. 😭All the best of life and love to Jenny and Henry, who allowed us to be part of their engagement. Thanks for trusting us, and happy married life!
Tumblr media
No Fanfic Wars because, well, ISSA BUMPER BIRTHDAY EPISODE ALREADY! From the dirty auntie laughs to the profane gasps of delight, we’ve enjoyed every minute of breaking down pop culture and thirst with you. You can listen to the whole episode RIGHT HERE. (more links to listen are down below).

Munsaga Begins!
Welcome to the beginnings of the online presence for the podcast known as Munsaga!  My name is Huntermun, and joining me thus far are my co-host Daniaal and good friend Rod.  We’ve managed three episodes at this point, with the third one going up today and all three put out one week after the other on Wednesday.  We’re on a roll!
The main show is up on iTunes, Google Play, and Stitcher with a still-image version of the audio to go up on our YouTube channel as soon as I have artwork done for it.  What you can find on YouTube thus far is sort of neat, I think: we post up the original Google Hangouts version of the show with the swearing and spoilers included and you can find all those in a playlist here.  Each Sunday, I make available that Wednesday’s show’s Rough Draft, but that too can change with your feedback.
Speaking of, if you have comments or critiques about the show you can email us at [email protected].  Right now we’re doing everything with free software because we’ve little income, but if you like what we’ve made so far you might consider giving us a buck or two up on Patreon.  No tiers, nothing flashy… just if you feel like it, we’ve got one.  I’m not gunna lie, it would really help us out and until it becomes untenable, we’ll even give you a shoutout on the show if you want it!
You can also find us out on Twitter at Munsagas, Facebook the same, and Discord as well.  Each of those works as a sub-domain to Munsaga.NET (which is still being worked on), so—for example—you can go to facebook.munsaga.net and it will redirect you to our Facebook Group.  Isn’t that handy?
Also up on Munsaga.NET are links to our Show Notes which is a file containing references to stuff we mention during the course of each show.  Additionally, we tend to have at least one poll going and you can find those each at the shownotes and polls sub-domains respectively.  You can save those links for later too because eventually we’ll have ourselves a nice site done up by yours truly and they’ll direct to the right place.
As for Tumblr-specific stuff, well, you can Ask us questions here, obviously, and I for one will respond or pass on your responses.  You might also see artwork here reposted from my personal Tumblr or you all if any fan art comes in.  As for anything else, well, what would you like to see?  We’re doing this show for all of us, and you’re a part of that.  What would you like us to put up here on Tumblr?
Thanks again for checking us out, and we hope to See you in the Future!

EPISODE 0: PROBLEMATIC HOLLYWOOD
LISTEN:  SOUNDCLOUD
SOURCES: listed at end of transcript
NOTES: We’re waiting on validation from the iTunes store and Stitcher is down, but everything will be available on other platforms soon!
TRANSCRIPT:
Hi, I’m Jack, and this is the first episode of “Tuck In: We’re Rolling: Queer Hollywood Stories”. Kind of. It’s more of an Episode Zero. I wanted to have a little bit of a conversation, if you will, about why I decided to make this podcast and and, you know, some other important tidbits and facts.
So, I decided to make this podcast a couple of weeks ago after I had finished reading a book called The Whole Equation by an author named David Thomson. It’s a really good book, but it kinda became apparent about halfway through reading reading it that the author kind of has a low opinion of stars that had been been rumored to be gay or lesbians, and even really just women in general.
So I was reading this book and, you know, I feel like he -- he crossed a line with me, at least, when he went on to say something about Monty Clift, and sort of disparaging Montgomery Clift. And, so, I -- I had a few drinks and I logged onto my tumblr -- my personal tumblr -- and I went on a rant. I went on a rant, and it started with my talking about Cary Grant. And I had been listening to You Must Remember This, a podcast by Karina Longworth which is an absolutely amazing podcast and I definitely suggest you should read it -- listen to it, I mean. So it’s kind of a widely agreed upon fact from several biographers that Cary Grant was gay. And I had never known that. You know, I’ve loved Cary Grant for a really solid portion of my life, um, you know, I wanted to be Cary Grant when I saw Arsenic and Old Lace, only slightly less than I wanted to be Marlon Brando when I saw Streetcar Named Desire. So I started off by talking about how angry I was that no one knew this. Or if they did, it wasn’t really widely known and I felt like it was sort of queer erasure in Hollywood. And you know, my rant went on and on and I talked about Marlon Brando and I talked a little bit  about Monty Clift and I invoked the great names of Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich and Katherine Hepburn. Um -- but, you know, after all was said and done, uh, somebody kinda popular reblogged it and I got a reply from someone and they said, “Well, Cary Grant wasn’t gay. Cary Grant was bisexual.”
Okay, Cary Grant was bisexual. Or was he gay? Well, we -- we really don’t have any way of knowing. Because, and this is the important part here, a lot of queer history in Hollywood has been erased. And a lot of the people I’m gonna talk about, at least in the first half of the season, uh, we don’t know. They’re dead, and maybe, you know, things happened after they had died and someone came forward and said, “No, I had a relationship with this person” or there were rumors or it -- it -- you know, things like that. So there’s really no way of knowing, and the stories that I’m going to bringing to you are a lot of secondhand rumors and a lot of heresay. You know, you type in ‘gay Hollywood’ in Google, and at least three articles come up, you know, listicles come up that say, “Well, this peson was gay, and this person was gay, and this person was gay.“
So, you know, getting back to Marlon Brando, I just finished a biography of him called Brando’s Smile*, uh, I can’t remember the name of the author right now, uh, and it, uh, you know -- it’s mostly about her talking about his work and his good deeds and his life, um, a little about his personal life about his son’s murder trial and things like that. Um, and it, it mentions that he met James Dean. And James Dean just had stars in his eyes, and just, was so excited to meet him, and after he had passed away, Brando said it was such a shame. And, on one of these listicles that I, of course, clicked on, because I’m -- of course, I’m gonna click on clickbait, the very first entry was about Marlon Brando and James Dean having an affair. And again, there’s really no way of knowing, but in my journeys of researching this podcast, I did come across at least one time that Marlon Brando said, “Yeah, I’ve hooked up with a guy, it’s not a big deal. Everybody does it.”**
So, this gets to my second point, which is [that] a lot of Hollywood history has been erased simply by people who don’t want to admit it. People who are just really loyal fans and they’re like, “No, there’s no way that they were gay, there’s no way that they were a lesbian, you know, they were -- they were married, they had kids, they did all this stuff.” And you know, it’s true, Marlon Brando had six kids, at least six kids biologically, and he adopted another six and you know, he -- he was -- he had a lot of lovers, as it were. Um, but he did admit, that one time. “I totally made it with a dude”. So what I’m trying to say here is that’s really no indicator of sexuality. People even today, gay people, get married to people of the opposite sex and they have kids and, you know, they do all these things. So I wanna address that, and then, kind of, push it to the side.
A lot of the other reasons that gay Hollywood history has been erased -- it comes down to, you know, Hollywood fixers. If someone is caught hooking up with someone of the same sex, you know, the old studios hired people to to come in and grease some palms and make it all go away, and that did happen quite a bit. And sometimes it backfired like with Billy Haines, when he was outed by the police and the newspapers and then subsequently booted out of Hollywood. And we’ll talk a little bit about him later in the season. And, you know, it also happened because maybe some people were out openly in Hollywood but not necessarily public about their relationships. So, what it comes down to is, this information is lost, which kind of gets back to my second point.
Hollywood has -- Hollywood has a really history of sort of nurturing this weird, queer, artistic vibe, but then denying these same queer people their right to exist in history. So this season, we’re gonna kind of go ahead and start digging through all of the wreckage of queer Hollywood history. Uh -- I’m gonna start back in the silent era, with a little bit about Rudolph Valentino, who wasn’t gay, but we’ll get to that, and I’m gonna go all the way through the 60′s, with the Civil Rights movement, and with people starting to market towards a gay audience, and we’re gonna come all the way up to present day with  a little episode about American Gods and its awesome sex scene and great diversity. We’re gonna do some collaborative episodes, some roundtable episodes, with my roommates and creative collaborators who are also working on their own podcast and hopefully that’ll be out soon. Um, it’s gonna be a really great season and I hope you’re here for the entire ride.
Uh, but before I leave you, uh, I wanted to mention a little bit of uh, kind of a disclaimer about gendered language. I’m gonna try and use non-gendered language as much as possible, but uh, obviously it’s a pretty well-agreed upon fact that uh, unless I’m talking about a transgender person, that most of the old Hollywood stars were cisgender. Um, I’m also going to be referring to the LGBT community as ‘queer people’ as a collective. I think it’s just a little bit easier to say than ‘LGBT community’ every ten seconds. Uh, and I’m also going to probably be referring to groups of actors and actresses as ‘actors’, not to disparage actresses and all the shit they that they had to put up with, but it’s just once again a little bit easier in a spoken word format.
So, thank you for listening to the very first episode Tuck In, We’re Rolling: Queer Hollywood Stories. This episode was recorded and edited by me, Jack Segreto. You can find a trasncript of this episode, along with our sources and some other fun facts and photos on our tumblr, tuckinpodcast.tumblr.com. You can also give us a like on Facebook at facebook.com/tuckinpodcast. Our ask box is open on tumblr for comments and suggestions, and you can also message us on Fcaebook. And uh, special thanks today for -- to my roommates Vanessa and Anissa for dealing with talking about this podcast for forever and forcing them to sit through a ton of old black and white movies that they’re not really sure if they like. Also special thanks to my friends Nicole and CJ all the way out in L.A. for giving me the name of the -- this series. Um, special thanks to my friends for listening to me, uh, talk about all this stuff. Shoutout to Kale for calling Lauren Bacall’s eyebrows ahead of their time. So thank you for listening! We’ll see you next time.
*Brando’s Smile, written by Susan L. Mizruchi (2014) **Full quote: “Homosexuality is so much in fashion that it no longer makes news. Like a large number of men, I, too, have had homosexual experiences and I am not ashamed.” (Celebrities in Hell, written by Warren Allen Smith)

7 Strategies I Use When Students Make Apps (or Do Any Genius Projects)
Vicki Davis on episode 307 of the 10-Minute Teacher Podcast
From the Cool Cat Teacher Blog by Vicki Davis
Follow @coolcatteacher on Twitter
I’m so excited! This is the time of year we are making apps. Now, while I’m talking about making apps in today’s show, this will actually apply to passion projects, to making movies, any type of long-term project where you have the students brainstorm and create.
SMART’s Give Greatness contest is today’s sponsor. SMART wants to recognize educators across the globe who inspire greatness in their students, peers or community. Nominate your favorite educator at coolcatteacher.com/greatness.
Each nominee and nominator will be entered to win a classroom technology package. The winning nominator and his or her nominee each win a $20,000 package including one 7000 series SMART Board and SMART Document Camera, 30 Chromebooks, and SMART training and implementation. Enter a great teacher today.
Because these seven principles that I’m going to give you apply to any type of project, where you have kids ideate, create projects, and work together in teams.

Now I do want to give a shoutout to my friends at MAD-learn. We used their app platform — and no, they did not pay me to say that — I just love their platform, and that’s what we used to make our apps.
So the first thing is idea generation. It’s also called ideation.
Strategy 1: Idea Generation, AKA Ideation
This is really the most important part, because it’s setting you up for whether you’re going to succeed or not in your project.
If you’re going to have team problems, this is when you’re going to see them. You really have to observe the groups and make sure they’re working well together.
You also want to push kids to do things that they’re passionate about doing.
For example, in this app project that I’m working on now, I had one group of kids that was going to make a Dog Dictionary, about all of the different types of dogs that were out there and that sort of thing.
I wasn’t entirely happy with it, but I never usually say, “No,” directly, unless it’s going to endanger somebody or something like that.
I do a red light – yellow light – green light process which means, “Well, you’re about get the red light if you keep doing that.” Or I’ll say, “Right now, you’re in yellow light, but this is what you need to do to get to green light.“ Green light obviously means that you’re going ahead into production.
This is a term even used in Hollywood from what I understand, although I’ve never been really involved in movie making in that way.
So they need to have lots of ideas. They need to connect. I try not to intervene.
For example, I have a boy who came and said, “Ms. Vicki, I want you to red light my group. I don’t think it’s going to work, and I don’t want them mad at me.”
And I’m like, “OK, why can’t you just have this conversation with them?”
“Well, I just want you to handle it for me.”
And I said, “Well…” and we talked about it for 10-15 minutes, and he said, “Well, you’re not going to intervene.”
And I said, “No, here’s the thing. I’m not just teaching about apps here. We’re actually teaching about how to collaborate, how to work together. And part of life is having difficult conversations with folks. And I do agree with you, but I’m not entirely sure that me red lighting it is the right thing to do.”
Certainly, there is a time for me to be the bad guy, but this wasn’t one, because this particular student is very gifted, but also needs to learn to work with others. So I did not red light it, and they were moving ahead. Dog Dictionary was going to be it.
And I turn around, and this young man had a conversation with his team that he thought, “Well, you know what? This is probably not going to make it, and I think that there are other apps out there that are too much like this. Maybe we should go to other teams that might be more successful.”
Well, all of them decided to red light their own app, and they split into three different teams. Now, this was the perfect outcome, but it was a perfect outcome because THEY decided it. They made the decision, and it was what they wanted to do.
I felt great about it.
So idea generation is so important. You want to come up with lots of ideas, you want to push them, help them do that.
So then the second thing is I like students to go in after they’ve kind of come up with their idea. I create a template or a hyperdoc in Google Doc. They’ll turn around and make a copy of that, and it has everything they need to fill in.
Complete the Google Doc
Now I have constraints here, so for example, they have to start with a 50-word description of their app. They have to keep it to 50 words because if they were going to have their app in the App Store, that’s pretty much how many words it would be.
And I want them to make it compelling, and about why we need this app. And they have to collaborate.
So I’m actually looking at the revision history. So I see which kids are coming into class, I’ll pull up the four or five Google Docs for all those kids. I’ll go through them and look at the revision history, and I’ll say, “Hey, I only see one person editing on your Doc today. What’s going on?”
And then we have the conversation. You should see their eyebrows come up when they realize that they’re not collaborating. Part of the requirement to get a green light is that they have to have a good working collaborative team. Because if you don’t have a collaborative team, you’re not going to have a good project.
Now the important thing is to realize that these projects are bigger than one person can do by themselves, and this is why I love having massive projects that are too big for one student to do by themselves.
You want students to work in teams. No one person can run a Fortune 500 company by themselves, and we want kids to know how to work in groups like this. We sketch things out.
Also in this document, have them do research before they can create their app and get the green light. They’ve got to prove to me that this app is needed, that they’ve done their research. They’ve got their out to hyperlink to that.
I actually require every single student to put in three items of research in the document. Well, I could do this collaboratively, but if I have every student having to research, I make sure that all the students know how to hyperlink but also that they can effectively research and they know how to do that as well.
So this is when I kind of giving them a test. I have five big pieces. It takes 2-3 days. They’re not going to get the green light unless they move through this document and unless I see that they’re working effectively together.
Now in this document, they also have to come up with fifty ideas for their app names! Well, you could think, “Oh my goodness, why would you do that?”
Well, I have found the best app names typically come somewhere between number seven and number twenty-one-ish. Kids are so worried about looking cool that you have to push them past the cool factor, because honestly, if you’re afraid of looking uncool, you’re afraid of coming up with good ideas.
A lot of times what will happen is, the kids run out of ideas, and finally, the cool thing becomes just throwing out ideas. They’ll laugh, and they’ll have dumb ideas. Right in the middle will be some incredible ideas. You want to teach kids how to brainstorm. You have to accept all the ideas, throw them into the document, and then decide what’s the best.
We had a long conversation about what makes a great app name. We have to discuss SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and having a name that can be found on the App Store. Also, alliteration! We like things — like Dog Dictionary — that have the same first initial.
We also like things that rhyme. We have this one app called the “Swole Patrol” and that’s an app that’s about exercises by teens for teens. That’s a great one. They had another name that was just not so good.
So again, don’t look for these on the App Store yet, because they’re not there. They’re just ideas that the kids are working on. But that’s kind of what we do.
Now, the third piece of this is that you want kids to have jobs. So we have PMs (Project Managers), APMs (Assistant Project Managers), and then Graphic Designers. Sometimes we’ll have Marketers doing something with social media. We’ll usually have an Editor. This is important because in apps, you want to give credit.
#2: Assign roles
But the thing that I always tell the students is that you may get the title, but to keep it, you have to earn it. So they can give each other all the titles they want. And sometimes they’ll propose titles, and they’ll say, “OK, I want this person to do the app trailer.”
OK, I’m fine with that. Thye can be the director of the app trailer, but if somebody steps in and does their job for them, they will lose that title. In the real world, you have to do the job.
They are able to list these on their transcript for the school, so it’s kind of awesome for the kids to say, “I was the PM or the APM of a particular job.” And they learn so much when they have that.
And it’s also easier for me, because you know, at the beginning of class, I’ll say, “I need to meet with all the PMs and APMs at my desk.”
I’ll kind of just tell them where everybody needs to be, and then they’ll go out and handle their teams. I’ll just turn around and I’m kind of like the CEO or the head coach, just trying to coach all these teams to move forward. I really want them to be leaders in their own groups.
#3 Stages of App Development
Now, there are also phases of development. So, as I said, there’s the red light, the yellow light, and the green light.
Red light means we have stopped production. Typically, the kids will red light themselves. It is very rare that I have to red light them.
Yellow light means that you can proceed, but you have to fix this, this, and this before you get a green light.
And the green light means you can go ahead to the next stage of production.
Well, the first stage is to get past the Google Doc, and then you have to get past me, and then I give you a green light. Then you go into App Development.
So then they’ll go in and they’ll do their site map, and they’re also going to get their basic theme, layout, and that sort of thing in the MAD-learn platform, to kind of show what the app will look like and do basic development.
#4: Presentation for an Authentic Audience
Then, they have to make a foam board with their graphics and they go in front of the principal and the curriculum director and typically another teacher. They’re having to present. They’re having to sell their app. They’re also having to show the app design and convince those that they can move forward.
At this point, I will usually have a limited number that can move forward. They’ll have to meet certain criteria. Think of it like a drivers test. You’re in the state of Georgia, and you have to make a 75% to pass your drivers test. That number seems a little low to me, but there you go. So I’ll have a rubric, and you have to make a certain number of points on those rubrics to get the green light to go ahead to Phase Two.
That’s typically how I do it, which means about 25% of the apps are probably going to drop out of the competition just because they don’t have enough points to be able to be green-lighted to the next phase.
Then, the last phase is we actually have, in front of the whole school and a judging panel, to determine which app is going to go on the App Store. And you could say, “Well, why do you want to do that?”
#5: Competing for Limited Resources
Well, that’s my fifth point. It’s OK to compete for limited resources. Sometimes when you have a movie, or when you have an app, or when you have just about anything that you produce that costs money… It costs money, and you have a limited amount of money.
So we have enough money, pretty much, to put one app on the store. Somebody in the audience might decide to fund another app. That’s happened before. But at this time, typically, it’s just one app.
So they’re competing to see which one is the best app and which one’s going to go live on the App Store. And it’s perfectly OK to do that. That is the real world, and that is how it goes.
We’ve had quite a few apps. One’s called iCare, DroneZone, one’s called unCut. There’s a lot of apps, and you can look at the MadStore, which is kind of like a staging area for apps before they go live on the official Apple Store or the Google Play Store, those places. You can see a lot of student apps in there in the staging area of the MAD-store.
#6: Copyright
So the sixth thing is copyright. Now, this is one of the hardest things. The kids who wanted to do the dog app that we talked about earlier. I really think that they thought it would be pretty easy because they could just copy and paste information.
You can’t do that when you’re making an app. You can’t just take music when you’re making a movie! Kids just think that they can just take whatever they want, and that’s not the way the world works.
We’ve really got keep a handle on that copyright. What I typically do is… I will pull up the platform and copy-paste some pieces of it into Grammarly, and I have Grammarly Pro, which will do a Plagiarism Check. It will tell me pretty quickly if we have a plagiarism problem. Then they could end up with a red light.
Now you could ask, “What happens if somebody ends up in a red light?”
Well, we have the drafts — so if you can think of the NFL draft — we sit down and we figure out those who don’t have a team. The Project Managers that are left will just kind of draft those folks.
Now sometimes, there are behind the scenes negotiations that go on.
People notice there’s somebody who’s really great at graphic design on the other team, and they’ll want them on theirs. There may be some conversations, some trading. There are things that happen behind the scenes. But everybody ends up with a team, to work on a team in the final competition.
So you have app teams getting larger and larger, getting more and more done. Everybody has to create a certain number of pages. You can end up with an app with a good 30-40 screens which is a well-developed, very strong app by the end.
The draft is interesting. I always tell students, “If your team got red-lighted, would you want to be the last one drafted?”
Now they’ll never know because the draft happens with PMs and APMs, privately in my room with the door closed. But the draft is actually very exciting, and it teaches kids so much about the kind of folks that people want on their team. They want people that are easy to work with. They want people who pull their weight. They want people who will bring something to the team.
It’s just a fantastic experience to do that.
And then the last piece of this is number seven. Students need to develop collateral materials that go with whatever their project is.
#7: Development of Collateral Materials
So while students are creating apps, I have them create a website. They’ll have an app trailer. They’ll typically create a Twitter, Instagram, social media type platforms to go with it. So that it’s a full offering. It’s a full product they’ve really thought through. Those are really parts of what they show to the final Shark Tank competition, they’ll have their app trailer at that point.
For Phase Two, they won’t have their app trailer. You have to get a green light for Phase Two to get to where you’re going to have an app trailer.
So they have all these collateral materials, and it’s a really a very well-developed project. Everybody has a team. Everybody is on a team. They can have those conversations.
For my students, I have found, that when they go to college and when everything else is equal. You and all of the other folks who are interviewing for that scholarship have the same GPA, and you have the same activities. You’re the best of the best.
When my students can kick back and talk about the app that they made, and that they were the Project Manager in the Shark Tank Competition, and how they spoke and how they were able to work through the problems that you have in teams, how you were able to motivate people who maybe aren’t very motivated because it’s the end of the school year… THAT really does make a difference.
I find that it’s also very engaging for students and very fulfilling to have a meaningful product that comes out of this whole process.
So I’ve given you seven strategies, seven techniques that I use when we’re making apps.
I hope this has been a helpful Ed Tech Tool Tuesday, and kind of gives you an overview of how I like to run things.
This is a typical project setup for me. The students are running it. I’m the coach. I’m helping the kids. I’m encouraging the kids. That sort of thing. So I hope this gives you some insight.
