the way they are structuring the arguments minato and shin have in this season are absolute genius, and i cannot get enough of it. and this episode is so good for showing that, bc everything that seems petty or trivial or silly when they bicker hits at something deeper and more prominent that exists as an actual issue in their relationship, and somehow every time they bicker, it goes back to it, the real crux of the situation, which is how they see each other as childish. it’s minato’s favourite rebuttal to call shin a kid or a little brat, bc he thinks he can just reduce any actual problems or grievances shin has to just childish behaviour. and when we think about how the strong, passionate confidence with which shin shares his feelings is associated with the naivety of being young, you don’t know the world or haven’t experienced it enough to have those learned insecurities, you can see how minato has the excuse to reduce his behaviour down to this. and you can also add on this generational divide that’s probably exacerbated by how familiar and ingrained minato is to the society and community where he lives where he sees elder people day to day and becomes close to them, plus him leaving his city job to continue a family business almost feels like an early retirement so the life he leads is only shared by older people, he feels like he belongs to an older generation despite not being old, and thus has picked up all these notions about his identity and relationship that belong in that older generation, hence his difficulty with coming out and exposing his relationship.

shin, on the other hand, is part of this youth where it doesn’t matter and it’s not ingrained in him to feel guilty or like he needs to hide, and he’s aware of this and how it affects minato. and when he sees minato as childish, it’s not that he needs to grow up necessarily, it’s more like he needs to grow forward, out of these old notions of gayness being tied to guilt, and emotionally mature in that way, almost like he needs to grow up again, just in the current surroundings and be taught these new things about identity that allow him to be comfortable. but another way in which shin does see him as childish is how fickle he thinks he is, that he’d fall for people easily, which centres around this insecurity about minato’s feelings for sakuma and feeling like he can’t be secure in minato’s feelings for him because of it. it’s ironic bc minato turns his nose up at this idea shin not trusting him, but he also easily distrusts shin and thinks the worst when he sees him with someone else, almost like he can’t have any security in shin’s feelings for him bc that childishness of his passion implies that it’s not genuine, that it too is fickle and temporary. and shin’s distrust would be placated if minato learned to be more forward and reaffirm his feelings for shin without seeming like it’s hard or a big deal, but he can’t do that bc of all the reasons above about why he’s insecure in this relationship in the first place. it’s all connected, and it needs growth on both sides to get better, but my favourite thing about all of it is that neither of them wants the other to change fundamentally. shin can list all the things he likes about him and it encompasses his looks and his cuteness and his kindness and his brattiness and how difficult he is bc he likes him being this complicated handful minato knows he is and doesn’t shy away from. and when minato just says shin is handsome, I don’t think it’s just him stuck on looks, I think it’s more that there’s this inherent handsomeness to him, not just in the way he looks but the way he holds himself, the way he pursues his goals, the way he shares his feelings with confidence and is so kind and giving, it’s handsomeness in every facet. shin doesn’t want minato to not be difficult, and minato doesn’t want shin to not be so full on, they just need to find the ways to stop these things they like clashing and getting in the way.

and ps. I just love seeing shin talk to shu and rolling his eyes bc emotionally immature men really do be coming at him left right and centre

Aoyama Yuuga: All Might. No question, he loves the way All Might presents himself, and how he smiles in the face of despair. All Might is the pinnacle of heroism, in his eyes

Ashido Mina: Ryukyu. She thinks of her as an absolute icon, adoring her humble attitude, yet her ferocity in battle. Plus, all those clips of her being soft with children helped fuel her adoration

Asui Tsuyu: Gang Orca. Along with his aquatic-based quirk, she indentifies with his past, which he's open about, admitting how people would mock and bully him for being mutant, but strived towards heroics to help others accept their traits

Bakugou Katsuki: All Might. Mostly due to his strength and how he never loses. Alas, his ultimate dream is to surpass All Might and become the strongest, though this conflicts how he percieves All Might as unbeatable

Hagakure Tooru: Gunhead. It's less due to his strength or achievements, and more due to how threatening and strong he looks, only to be absolutely adorable in all the interviews. She loves that dichotomy

Iida Tenya: Ingenium, as if there is another option. In his eyes, Ingenium is the ideal hero. While he may not be as strong as All Might, or taken down as many villains as Endeavour, he will always see his brother as the best there could be

Jirou Kyouka: Present Mic. His tenacity, his never-ending joy, his pure enthusiasm, everything. She adores it all, and when he speaks up about how music can save people just as much as heroes do, it solidifies her choice of favourite hero

Kaminari Denki: Endeavour, (subject to change), due to how strong he is, and how many villains he's taken down. As someone with a dangerous quirk, Denki sees Endeavour's Hellfire and admires how he's able to control it so easily, especially with his flaming beard

Kirishima Eijirou: Crimson Riot, all the way through. His manliness, his view on courage, his inspirational speeches towards the newer generation. Maybe Crimson Riot isn't as well known as modern-day heroes, but he will forever be Eijirou's number one

Kouda Kouji: Hound Dog. While he may appear threatening, Hound Dog genuinely cares about others, and takes pride in his counselling job, (unlike canon). Plus, he has an animal-based quirk and Kouji adores all animals. Apart from bugs

Midoriya Izuku: Of course, All Might. Not just his strength, or his no-lose win streak, (apart from AfO), but his actions. The way he inspires everyone, his yearn for peace, his unwavering smile. His message of: anyone can become a hero. Even after All Might says no, Izuku still greatly admires him

Mineta Minoru: Midnight. Yes, groan all you want. He admires how, rather than just using her looks for popularity, she weaponises it, using it to distract men, (and women), getting their guards down. For once, he admires something other than physique

Ojirou Mashirao: Swinger. He's an original hero, who has a monkey mutation. He's very crafty in the way he uses his mutation. He inspired a lot of Mashirao's moves, and helped him look past his bullies

Satou Rikidou: Lunch Rush. His stance on cooking helped Rikidou find pride in his baking, and his upbeat attitude. The fact that he cooked a full-course French meal for up to ten-thousand people says a lot, and Rikidou admires it

Sero Hanta: Spiderguy. He would have called himself Spiderman, but it'd been copyrighted long before. His use of webbings to capture criminals and to swing across the city inspires Hanta to use his own quirk in similar ways

Shouji Mezou: Godzillo. Ever since he was little, he liked watching his interviews about how he was bullied for his appearance when he was young and strove to be a hero to help others accept themselves. It helped him strive to become a hero

Todoroki Shouto: At first, he doesn't really have one. He doesn't really admire heroes, when the only one he's had a close look at is Endeavour and, well... This is subject to change

Tokoyami Fumikage: Hawks, (subject to change). He admires his strive, how he became such a high-ranking hero at such a young age. His creativity with his quirk is also an inspiration

Uraraka Ochako: A la canon, Thirteen. They're the staple of resuce-based heroics, and both of their quirks affect force. Plus, Thirteen isn't ashamed to admit to being brought up poor, which Ochako identifies with

Yaoyorozu Momo: Miruko, no question. She loved her ferocity in battle, and while she dislikes her lack of cooperation, she still admires her strength in battle, and how her status inspires a generation of women and women in heroics

(some of) my timeskip 1A headcanons

uraraka ochako - has gained weight since graduation; she can afford to eat better now and she does so with delight. 1a jokes that if you ever need a good meal, ochako's apartment is where you'll find some — but it's only half a joke, considering people do show up at hers for meals sometimes. - most of her jewelry is red, pink, or themed around pomegranate flowers, and at formal events it's very common for her hair to be pulled up in that spiky bun. some people recognize this for what it is; a tribute to himiko toga (pomegranates were her favorite fruit, after all) but it's become more well known as an uravity thing. - does a ton of public speaking (at schools, temples, galas, anywhere that'll let her) to talk about her quirk counseling project; always attributes the inspiration for it to himiko toga by name. the world will not forget the tragedy of himiko so long as ochako is there to tell her story. - her rank doesn't matter all that much to her, save for the fact that the publicity grants her more power in expanding her quirk counseling project. she's sat comfortably in the top 10 since she started it. - she makes a point of calling her parents every weekend; they're still momma and daddy to her. - very smart with her money. everything is budgeted despite her making enough to not truly need to do that anymore — she sets aside a portion of every paycheck for izuku's hero suit, a portion of it for her parents, but she puts a ton of her money into savings. asui tsuyu - the mom friend, somehow. makes a habit of texting all of her friends at least once a week to make sure they're doing okay. - has an instagram account where she posts sketches she's done, pictures she's taken, whatever it may be. it never features anything outwardly heroic and people sometimes call her the "slice-of-life hero" because of it. - never shook her bluntness (autism...) and interviewers both love and hate her for it - absolutely adores taking on interns - works with shouji, kouta, and tokoyami frequently to speak about against anti-mutant rhetoric todoroki shouto - very rare sighting in any of the 1a groupchats. - media darling, which made him very uncomfortable at first — they often wanted to know about touya, or his family, and rarely about shouto himself. he's never fully shaken this discomfort, but he does accept the power of a positive media image, so he doesn't avoid them. - exceptionally kind to his fans, especially children. - known among hero circles for his casework. underground heroes appreciate him a lot — he's not judgemental of them, even incidentally - nearly impossible to schedule anything with. his friends try so hard but he's always so busy. - 6 years after graduation, ochako and tenya convinced him to schedule himself a weekend off every month so he could visit his family, go out with friends, or just take the time to himself. - one of the biggest contributors to izuku's hero suit. bakugou is half-convinced that he's taking some of endeavor's paychecks to help with it. - has modeled for yaomomo's clothing brand a few times and accidentally became an icon for scar positivity because of it - has his own agency, but very rarely takes interns. the only intern he's taken on in recent memory was eri I WROTE OUT BOTH IZUKU'S AND JIROU'S AND IT WON'T LET ME POST THEM HELP

ngl as an mha villain stan i sometimes wonder if hori’s pretty transparent goal of social reform in the manga is mainly because of his bias for the lov. i don’t like how he treats outside villains as if they’re less deserving of sympathy to the readers. it’ll leave the ending feeling a little idk the word fake? at least to those who pay attention to this part of the story.

anyways with the latest chapters released after this ask in mind. and also just the direction the entire final arc has been going. firstly, i don't really think there's a transparent goal of social reform, so much as it's something that's constantly dangling in the corner of the narrative's peripheral. the story brings up the structural issues that has led to a lot of villains, but also hmms and haws over how much of those are REAL issues / all for one's fault / just people not being strong enough to get over it.

the story is certainly stronger and more cohesive when you read it through the lens of structural issues and social reform! they are a part of the narrative! it's also scared to commit to those ideas, because it's being published in Weekly Shonen Jump with a brutal workload that an author who seems to at best have a very centrist view of the world must suffer through.

based on 424, i think in epilogue we're going to get lip service to those social reform ideas. shouji will be that light shining on heteromorph discrimination, maybe something will happen with quirk counseling. while the status quo is something that the character's have honestly been angling for (STREAM BRING IT ALL BACK A TONE POEM ON RETURNING TO THE STATUS QUO), there's enough in 424 to say that like. well you got the very on-the-nose juxtaposition between the building crews and the doctor's news - you can work towards bringing things back to normal, but they can't. the memory of shigaraki telling deku that if anything has been destroyed depends on what people decide to do tomorrow, the whole "we've got to go further beyond". like, the obvious hints are that the kids are going to do more.

it's just not going to land because not once have any of these kids have actually engaged with those ideas. shouji never intended to actively change anything about discrimination, he just wants to be a passive icon. uraraka did a great job actually engaging with toga and understanding her point of view, but quirk counselling didn't really come up and it's never been a part of her storyline before. the todoroki family has had the most direct engagement with the ideas of abuse, but there's a veil of it being an "in the family" issue like. deku doesn't think about fuck all.

but back to your actual point about the LOV and horikoshi being biased towards them. like True they are the villains with the most backstory and pathos, most panel time, attention, development, so on and so forth that a lot of other villains don't really get, to my despair (MORE MLA. MORE SHIE HASSAIKA. MORE KUNEIDA AND GASHLY).

but those other villains, that don't get the same sympathy by the narrative, are also way less brutalized than the league is lmao. they can just go to jail, which is apparently too awesome for the league to end up in so they gotta die, as a mercy, or whatever people are arguing nowadays. it be what it be! maybe it's like how everyone likes to put their favourite characters through hell.
