#2483 - Dactylanthus taylorii - Wood Rose

In te reo Māori  te pua o te rēinga "flower of the underworld", or waewae atua, "feet or toes of the spirits/gods". The binomial name means Taylor's Finger-flower, and is named after the Rev. Richard Taylor who took a specimen to Joseph Hooker in England, who formally described the species in 1859.

A completely parasitic plant that attaches to the roots of at least 30 species of hardwood and shrubs, in damp soil in secondary forests on the North Island and Little Barrier Island. The host plant reacts by developing the fluted burls above, which were once collected in their thousands as 'biological curiosities'.

The flowers have a sweet, somewhat musky fragrance, and are pollinated by short-tailed bats. The kākāpō (Strigops habroptilus) was also a pollinator, but that flightless nocturnal parrot is now critically endangered. Introduced mice can pollinate the flowers, but rats, possums, pigs and deer destroy the plants.

The only related species are Hachettea austrocaledonica from New Caledonia and Mystropetalon thomii from South Africa, forming the family Mystropetalaceae. Genetic evidence suggests they are derived from the Showy Mistletoes of the Loranthaceae.

I don’t know if I’m the only one who thinks this, but I LOVE when Sonic designs have different heights. Not to say all of them have the same hight. But most of the non adult or little kid sized characters like Sonic, Espio, (Sometimes Knuckles and Rouge) Silver, Amy, and Blaze are seen to have the same hight when shown together. It’s not a bad thing and their designs are already wonderful and unique enough. It’s just something I’ve noticed. In most of the games anyway. Though there are some exceptions in other medias and one recent game.

For example, almost all Sonic Boom characters have different heights.

Watching Sonic Prime (looking more like the modern game designs) also helped me realize how much I appreciate when these characters aren’t always the same hight.

Do you notice how short Prime!Sonic is compared to a few characters? (Besides most of the Chaos Council and Big) Or how other characters like Rusty Rose and Dread are much taller than their own variants? It’s kind of cool.

Sonic Dream Team is another great example. Look at the variety of hight differences on this character chart. Barely anyone’s the exact same hight here and it adds to the characters to me personally. Their separate qualities and shape language stands out more because of this.

The unique heights and sizes only compliments character designs. It’s the little details that can make for a BIG change in how you view these characters when put together.

“Come on, Mangey.” Prim sighed, placing a hand on her hip as she grabbed the bridge of her nose. The mentioned fox tilted his head at the bat. “It's only three letters.”

“I thought he'd get ‘fly’ immediately.” Gnarly grumbled, crossing his arms over his chest. “Considering that's what he does now.”

“He can say feelings just fine, but can't get fly.” Thorn mumbled, shifting slightly against Birdie. The group were relaxing in the treehouse, soaking in the warm sun.

Mangey was curled up in the newest member’s lap, a scruffy blue hedgehog with incredibly messy quills. They'd met him when the little fox had wandered off one day without letting any of them know. The hedgehog had found him asleep in a pile of mud and managed to bring him back to the group safe and sound.

“Maybe he's just not ready yet.” The hedgehog, Spirit, suggested. He was idly scratching the fox's ear, leaning against a tree. “I mean, I couldn't talk until I was thirteen.”

“Really?” Prim asked, let the hand on her nose fall to her side. “What got you talking?”

“I don't think there was a specific thing.” Spirit shrugged, “My brother and sister tried for years to get me to talk. Nothing different happened. I just couldn't talk one day and then the next it was the easiest thing in the world.”

“So you're saying we're gonna have to wait until he's thirteen for him to talk?” Gnarly asked, clearly not happy about waiting.

“Maybe. Or shorter or longer or maybe even never at all.” The teen looked down at the kit in his lap, smiling when he saw him sleepily rub his eyes. “He'll talk again when he's ready. Nothing we can do but wait.”

Mangey let out a squeaky yawn before deciding to fully curl into a ball atop the hedgehog’s lap. The soft petting made him sleepy.

Spirit smiled fondly at the kid, reaching over to grab a piece of fabric to use as a makeshift blanket.

“Guess we can't argue that.” Prim mumbled with a shrug, looking back over her shoulder. “Hangry’s been gone a while. I'm gonna go check on him.”

“I'll come with you.” Thorn decided, already on her feet before the bat could refuse her company. Prim went to question it, but stopped when she noticed Spirit was starting to drift off too.

“You come too, Gnarly.” She quietly said instead, motioning for the echidna to follow. He looked confused, but followed the girls with only a few grumbles.

Cringetober Day 7 - Crossover

So. I understand there's no connective tissue between Danny Phantom and Fallen London. In fact, they're the most tonally dissonant pairing I could think of.

I do not care, because those are my current obsessions.

Dr Robert Franich gave a talk on his work with Dactylanthus taylorii, New Zealand's only fully parasitic plant and its relationship with Mystacina tuberculata, New Zealand's only bat species. The Maori name for Dactylanthus is "pua o te reinga," meaning 'flower of the underworld,' and alludes to the way its flowers emerge from below ground.

I realized I tend to draw all the Sonic characters with exactly the same body type and wanted to branch out a bit. So I made a set of character references!

These mostly aren't based on anything in canon, it's mostly just vibes and me playing around and exaggerating things
