By: Eliot A. Cohen
Published: Dec 23, 2023
Like many alumni of Harvard, I have been following the misadventures of President Claudine Gay—first her coolly calibrated reflections on arguments for the genocide of Jews, and now accusations about the intellectual integrity of her published work—with appalled fascination. It is the latter topic on which I can claim some expertise.
I learned about plagiarism at Harvard by an accident of academic politics. The department of government, where I had received my Ph.D., had an opening for an assistant professor in the field of international affairs, and it had (in the department’s opinion) two equally attractive candidates. With Solomonic wisdom, they divided the position in half, offering me and my competitor half-time administrative positions. Mine was as the Allston Burr Senior Tutor in Quincy House.
The Harvard houses are modified versions of Oxford or Cambridge colleges. They are residences but not dormitories. Associated with each house was a group of faculty and visiting fellows who regularly dined and spoke there, and who helped constitute each house’s Senior Common Room. There was a staff of resident tutors, mainly graduate students, who taught sections of major courses and advised students in a variety of ways. And then there were the master and the senior tutor, also resident. The former presided over the collective life of the house; the latter was responsible for the students as individuals.
I should note here that the term senior tutor connoted a function that was chiefly educational. Harvard now calls them resident deans, because they came to do everything but educate, including directing students to mental-health resources and responding to the varied crises of a student’s life in the pressure cooker that is the college.. Harvard dropped the term master in 2016 because it reeked of the antebellumplantation. (Oddly enough, this compunction has not prevented Harvard from continuing to offer master’s degrees, for which it charges very healthy tuition.)
Harvard then took plagiarism seriously—and in one way still does, disciplining dozens of students every year for this gravest of academic sins. Even transgressions falling short of plagiarism could still constitute “misuse of sources,” for which a year’s probation and suspension from participation in extracurricular activities were the usual response. Plagiarists, meanwhile—those who had lifted someone else’s language without quotation marks or citation—were bounced from the college for a year, during which time they were required to work at a nonacademic job (no year-long backpacking trip) and refrain from visiting Cambridge. They would be readmitted after submitting a statement that examined their original misdeed and reflected on it.
The senior tutor was the one who received any initial complaint from a faculty member, some of whom were (or feigned to be) shocked when they learned that plagiarism could have material consequences. They would assemble the dossier, counsel the student, and present the case to the administrative board, composed of all the senior tutors and a few faculty and deans, about 20 people in all. The senior tutor would present the student’s case to his or her colleagues, and we would deliberate.
If the board voted to rusticate the offender, the student could make a personal appeal, which was surprisingly rare. After long conversations with their senior tutor, most of the students understood that they had gone seriously astray, and left with a feeling of, if not relief, then of catharsis. They could return to school with the slate wiped clean, and with much greater maturity and sense of purpose. This was, in part, because most plagiarists are not depraved or even lazy, but simply insecure. They came back as much more independent and self-reliant characters, which was what we wanted.
It was a very good system. Harvard’s approach to plagiarism then rested on the notion that even a disciplinary process should be educational. At its heart was the importance of accepting responsibility for one’s actions. It was not enough to correct the errant document; it was necessary to look at oneself in the mirror and say, “I did this, and it was wrong.” I believe that this approach was rooted in Harvard’s lingering mission of developing leaders of integrity and courage.
A leader must begin with a deeply rooted sense of responsibility; from there one moves to accountability, the ability to own one’s organization’s failings. For example, if Jewish students are being harassed and threatened on the university campus where one is president, it means saying, “I own this. I will fix it,” in simple and unqualified terms.
The members of the administrative board were predominantly teachers and scholars, not administrators, and that was crucial. We did not bring in lawyers. We did not hire expensive plagiarism experts as consultants. We read the materials carefully (the dossiers could be quite thick), deliberated, and made a decision. If a senior tutor got carried away defending a student from their house, their colleagues would gently but firmly nail the case to the undisputed facts. And when faculty members tried to intercede, they were equally firmly told that they were responsible for the grading side of the education, and we were covering the disciplinary side.
It is undisputed that Claudine Gay used other scholars’ language, often with the slightest modification or none, and occasionally without even a footnote acknowledgment. Were that not so, she would not have recently requested corrections to work dating back to her dissertation. I have looked at the evidence presented in various places, none of which has been controverted, and it is clear to me that this is plagiarism. For example, as The Harvard Crimson reports, her 1997 Ph.D. dissertation includes this paragraph:
The average turnout rate seems to increase linearly as African-Americans become a larger proportion of the population. This is one sign that the data contain little aggregation bias. (If racial turnout rates changed depending upon a precinct’s racial mix, which is one way to think about bias, a linear form would be unlikely in a simple scatterplot. A linear form would only result if the changes in one race’s turnout were compensated by changes in the turnout of the other race across the graph.)
A 1996 scholarly paper by Bradley Palmquist and Stephen Voss reads as follows:
The average turnout rate seems to decrease linearly as African Americans become a larger proportion of the population. This is one sign that the data contain little aggregation bias. If racial turnout rates changed depending upon a precinct’s racial mix, which is one description of bias, a linear form would be unlikely in a simple scatter plot (resulting only when changes in one race’s turnout rate somehow compensated for changes in the other’s across the graph).
It is a pretty complete steal, with the bizarre substitution of “increase” for “decrease.”
Even if, in the most tolerant and sympathetic of readings, this and similar copying merely constitute “misuse of sources,” it is disqualifying for a position of leadership at any university. Her failure to accept responsibility in stark and unqualified terms makes matters worse.
The Harvard Corporation has stood by President Gay, even as scandal has mounted. The New York Post reports that when it first raised the plagiarism accusations with Harvard, the response was not a comment on the evidence, but a 15-page letter from Harvard’s defamation lawyer. Instead of standing up for Harvard’s motto, Veritas, (“truth”), the corporation has hunkered down.
Students have a keen scent for the stink of hypocrisy; they understand Gay’s original misdeeds and the evasions of the Harvard Corporation. They may even realize that something has gone deeply awry with the university when a Harvard professor dismisses the claims as a right-wing attack and tells The New York Times,“If it came from some other quarter, I might be granting [the accusations] some credence,” as though the facts depend on the politics of those who point them out.
I have no idea how as a teacher at Harvard today I could look an undergraduate in the eye and hold forth about why plagiarism is a violation of the values inherent in the academic enterprise. They would laugh, openly or secretly, at the corruption and double standards. And I would not blame them for doing so.
President Gay is in a tough spot. The Harvard Corporation deserves to be in a much tougher spot, because it has betrayed the values that the university once cherished and that it still proclaims. In both cases, the remedy indicated is the one we senior tutors applied to many a student years ago: fess up, withdraw, and reflect.

Cang Du Backstory, Goals & Some Headcanons
-

( Some thoughts of the man of iron. So sad that he had a short appearance. He, and other Quincies DESERVE some backstory like how Kubo did to the Arrancars and the beloved Shinigami )
BACKSTORY
- Cang Du is actually in his mid 20s’ and was born and reside in the Monolith village. The village itself was one of the most isolated ones in China.
- He is actually well versed with ancient relics and scrolls.
- Will probably ended up as an archeologist if he was born under normal circumstances.
- He is actually a prodigy for his age but retained his down to earth nature due to his realism view.
- As a child, he was always a quiet boy. He learnt some basic martial arts from his relative ( probably Uncle), so his introvert nature won’t attract any annoying pests or potential bullies. He prefers to be in his own thoughts than being surrounded by people. He enjoyed taking a stroll by the forest to breathe the fresh air and the soothing silence.
- He either being with his parents, single parent or single relative.
- He actually grad with DEANS LIST for the said archeologist course. Masters with full scholarship as he is a very self sufficient man.
- He mostly spent time alone or doing odd jobs like working as a librarian or a bodyguard at any random warehouse for some free time and some extra cash. Trust me, like no one had a clue regarding him. He just do his job and behave in exchange to be left alone.
- His family was basically a traditional one in a good way as Cang Du seemed to disagree with the polygamy of the Emperor in the past.
- His family probably left the world when he is around late teens, making the poor man more lonely as by then, he adopted a nomadic lifestyle.
GOALS
- Cang Du actually discovered his powers when he was around 5 but he kept it a secret from his family to prevent them from being concerned.
- He knew despite loving his powers, the society considered it as some kind of mutation so he self taught on how to manage and control his power.
- He learnt some history regarding Quincies from one of the scrolls and learnt that his late grandfather from his mother side is a Quincy himself.
- He enjoyed being in solitude but a small part of him felt lonely, unwelcomed in the human world.
- When one of the Quincies ( Probably Gerard or Lille ), approached him and offer a place in one of the elite forces, Cang Du quickly jumped in, felt relief that he had a purpose regarding his origins.
- He did not mind it being fascist and militaristic. He is an unapproachable and silent guy so it did not effect him one bit. He just steer clear of any issue, do his job and he can do whatever he want.
- Like most Sternritters, he too have a mind of his own. However, one of the main reasons he respected Yhwach was due to the latter gave him a purpose over a lonely life.
HEADCANONS
- I always see him as a male version of Annie Leonhardt from SNK/ AOT.
- He is actually a naturally handsome guy so believe me when I say many women actually fawn over him but he remained oblivious to it.
- If Cang Du is a normal soldier, Bambietta probably would hit on him but she knew any feud with other Sternritter is punishable by death.
- In his university days, some women left him some letters but he either side read them or did not bother by it and left it under spider web lockers.
- Candice actually tried to strike a conversation in attempt to try to decently know him, but Cang Du usually respond with one/ two words or with gestures before it ended in uncomfortable silence. Candice usually sweat dropped as Cang Du walked away from the place.
- Bazz B tried to strike conversation with him but like Candice, he either gave a few words of responds or gestures. He also gave a look as a sign to stop. Bazz B also tried to ask him for drinks and teased him as some women find him attractive but he hardly took note of those.
- Was probably in cordial terms with others like Gremmy and As Nodt.
- Cang Du is a virgin 150%. He was one of those man who hardly give a thought and just steer clear from human contact. He probably doesn’t know what sex is so when at rare time where he needed to relief himself, he do it very briefly and quietly as he often felt awkward.
- Mask De Maculine and Askin are two eccentric goodies but he was just on good terms with both of them.
- If some women or waiter try to make a move, he swiftly move away or politely state his disinterest with being in a relationship. I do see it sometimes happen and that’s why Bazz B make fun of him.

What is the Final Getsuga Tensho?
I was thinking about Bleach just now, and I realized something that might be just an oversight on Kubo’s part, might be something actually big.
When Ichigo used the Final Getsuga Tensho against Aizen, our resident substitute was still using the powers available to him from Quincy Zangetsu. It’s really important to note that NO ONE was aware that Ichigo wasn’t using his real zanpakuto. NO ONE was aware that he was using Quincy powers that were pretending to be Shinigami powers.
Starting off, the Final Getsuga Tensho that was used looks and acts eerily similar to Uryu’s Letzt Stil. In terms of what the ability did, (let’s shorten it to make it easier on me) the FGT gave the user ludicrous amounts of power for a short period of time, and the user lost their powers afterwards as a drawback. What did Letzt Stil do? Give the user ludicrous amounts of power for a short period of time, and make said user lose their powers after as a drawback. How does one activate Letzt Stil? By having something that restricts their power use, then removing that restriction once the user is accustomed to it. What happened when Ichigo used the FGT? His sword and Bankai coat, both of which having been confirmed to be something QuincyGetsu manifested to further the illusion that Ichigo was using shinigami powers, disappeared. Phrasing it in another way, he removed his restriction by no longer needlessly diverting power elsewhere. Hell, even in both instances, the ability gave the user a badass outfit while the ability was active. So, the FGT was essentially Ichigo’s makeshift Letzt Stil.
With that in mind, and bringing back the very important note that NO ONE knew Ichigo was using Quincy powers, Isshin told Ichigo that the FGT was a thing. He even knew how one went about learning how to use it, and knew that the zanpakuto would put up a fight. He even knew the drawback from using the FGT. So, the FGT actually exists, and we have never actually seen it be used.
So what the fuck is it?

Additional Headcanons
-Each member of Aogiri’s fanclub:
Eren- Yeagerists (of course xD)
Lelouch- Black Knights
Kaneki- Mukaide (his nickname ironically from both lives xD)
Sanji: Sanjiholics
Ichigo- Getsuga
Izuku- Smashers
Natsu- Dragon Nation
Light: Light FC
- The fanclub for the group as a whole is called Yildiz which means star in Turkish, a good nod to Eren’s Turkish heritage and their fanclub colors are purple and black (thank Lelouch for that xD)
- The original lineup of Aogiri is as follows:
Eren (Leader/Leader Rapper/ Lead Dancer/ Guitar)
Kaneki (Main Rapper/ Sub-Vocalist/ Main Dancer/ Guitar)
Mamoru (Lead Vocalist)
Gon (Main Vocalist/ Keyboard)
Izuku (Sub- Vocalist/ Main Rapper/ Drums)
Ichigo (Main-Vocalist/Main Dancer/Bass)
Lelouch (Main Vocalist)
Natsu (Main Rapper/Main Dancer)
- Current Line-up:
Eren (Leader/Lead Rapper/Lead Dancer/Sub-Vocalist)
Kaneki (Main Rapper/ Sub-Vocalist/Main Dancer)
Izuku (Sub- Vocalist/ Main Rapper)
Ichigo (Main-Vocalist/Main Dancer)
Lelouch (Main Vocalist)
Sanji (Main Vocalist/ Rapper/ Dancer)
Light (Vocalist)
- Izuku is at times considered a member of the dancer line
- All the main rappers can actually sing but had to sacrifice the singing lines so that vocal line would shine
- Aogiri are generally regarded as the most feared idol group due to their powerful performances individually and together
- Their main chart rivals are Espada aka Rivals Team as everyone calls them
- The boys still have some of their powers from their past lives however Eren cannot transform into a Titan.
-Eren’s powers are similar to Rachel’s to some extent though he can be regarded as a male version of Sailor Mars
- Lelouch is a lot more badass and competent in his new incarnation and can physically fight for once. Thank Ichigo and Eren for that
- Izuku and Raven are very good friends due to being the babies of their respective groups xD. Izuku also gets along with Rose as well
- Aogiri is famous for their synchronization which is something every idol group strives to accomplish but they do it so well that they are called Kings of Synchronization and of course they are famous for their sexy image. Yes Izuku may be the resident cutie but he can be pretty naughty too. Just ask Bakugou
- Eren started getting criticised for his looks, voice, sexy image and many other things after the Levi breakup. Does not help that Levi said some nasty stuff about Eren to the press. That alone made more people to ship him with Dick
- Eren’s mental issues worsened thanks to the past haunting him
- There were shipping wars between those that shipped Ereri and those that shipped Dick and Eren xD
- Lelouch is still trying to come to terms with what happened to Nunnally (More on that in the Black Pearl fic)
- Izuku lost his mum around the timing of the accident. So many heroes lost their loved ones as a result of their past memories getting awakened and the villains being merciless in their pursuit of the heroes
- The Heroes Guild suddenly becomes a real life thing thanks to that crisis. That plus Deathstroke
- Ichigo still has his Shinigami and Quincy powers thankfully so that could come in handy
- Kaneki still has elements of his Ghoul powers
- Eren is regarded as the sexiest member of Aogiri and the sexiest idol ever. Yet this boy is a cutie and dork offstage like Exo’s Kai. Sanji is a close second
- Sanji is the funniest member though Eren himself can be just as funny thanks to his sarcasm and general cute antics. In short, these boys can be quite hilarious together
- Rival Team always helps the heroes not just because of their shared animosity for some villains but also because of the mutual respect they all share with each other
- Grimmjow is always called kitty by everyone much to his annoyance
- Ichigo hates being called Strawberry or Berry-Tan as the Vizards often call him
- Dick calls Eren his Black Pearl as a reference to his beautiful tanned skin tone
- Usagi becomes the main chick in the group for a while till Rukia, Touka, Honey, Lucy and C.C join in later on. More ladies join their ranks.
- Izuku is the shortest member of the group whilst Lelouch is the tallest member
- Izuku has a collection of bunny memorabilia
- The general animal motif for Aogiri is cats. And considering that they did a music video where they sort of acted like cats, it makes sense in hindsight xD.
- Kory, Dick and Eren eventually end up in a polyamorous relationship with Dick and Kory acting as Eren’s parents at times xD.
- Sanji screws up the most during dance practice and often forgets lines causing the others to tease him mercilessly
- Eren deeply regrets his past actions and often cries himself to sleep

My 2018 Reads
Let me start by saying that I have read almost 100 books this year (some short stories but I like to count those too) I’m going to make a separate list for my top ten but here are the other ones!
4 Stars
Two Dark Reigns by Kendare Blake
This is the third book in the Three Dark Crowns series. It’s a dark tale about three sisters who have to compete against each other for the crown. There are a lot of characters to follow which means they aren’t always that well developed but the story is so so enthralling.
The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas
Loosely based on real events, the novel follows Monica whose older sister was one of five cheerleaders to die under mystery circumstances. Five years after the deaths, Monica discovers something that could help her solve what really happened. This was a gripping read with some great twists
Beneath the Haunting Sea by Joanna Ruth Meyer
This book flew under the radar this year which is a shame because it was a great read. Talia gets banished to a dreary island where she stumbles upon ancient legends that may be more real than she realizes. I will admit, the first third of this book was a little wack. It was like a different book but it got much better once she got to the island.
The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw
A melancholy tale of a trio of ghosts that lure young boys to their deaths each summer. Our main character is a life long resident of the town who is just trying to make it through the summer. I’ll admit, it got a little messy in the end but for a debut novel, I thought it was very engaging.
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
I’m late on this one, I know. Rachel commutes to work everyday. Then one day she sees something she wasn’t supposed too that leads her down a dark spiral to find out what really happened. Definitely a turn pager that has more than one mystery to solve.
The Woman in the Window by AJ Finn
This year’s breakout mystery/suspense novel. Anna is confined to her house, spending her days in a group chat or playing online chest. When a seemingly perfect family moves in across from her, she becomes entangled in a mystery when she sees something she shouldn’t one night. An unreliable narrator will keep you guessing what’s real and what’s not.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
If you love the movie, you will love the book. An adorable, sweet read!
3.5 Stars
Scream All Night by Derek Milman
Dario grew up on the set of various B-horror movies. That’s because his family owns the studio that makes them. Dario has tried to distance himself from his family but is forced to return when his brother invites him to a very special event involving their father. Darkly funny and unique, this was a twisted take on a young man coming to terms with his past.
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black
Vampires are on the rise and to accommodate them all, the US government creates quarantined cities known as Coldtowns. Vampires must live in Coldtowns but for humans, it’s optional. But once you are in, it’s nearly impossible to get out. Holly Black creates an imaginative take on vampires. The book starts off a little slow but really picks up when our main character arrives at Coldtown. My only complaint is that this wasn’t a series. There was so much packed into this book that could have easily been expanded upon over the course of a few books.
Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney
Amber is in a coma. She can’t move or remember anything but she’s pretty sure her husband has something to do with her current state. The book alternates between past and present as Amber struggles to remember what happened to her. I found some of the twists convoluted and kooky but they were definitely original. Trigger Warning: there is a very graphic rape scene
3 Stars
Final Girls by Riley Sager
Quincy is one of 3 media named Final Girls; the last ones standing during a horror movie like massacre that killed their friends. Now Quincy is all grown up but still trying to forget what happened the night her friends were murdered when one of the other Final Girls shows up at her doorstep, forcing her to revisit her past.
Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust
A Snow White retelling with a unique twist! Mina, the future queen, has a heart made of glass, crafted by her magician father. Lynet, our Snow White, is the spitting image of her dead mother. Then one day Lynet discovers that the king had hired Mina’s father to craft Lynet out of snow in her mother’s image after she died. Alternating between Mina’s past and Lynet’s present, this is a sweet and simple fairytale retelling!
Hex Hall series by Rachel Hawkins
Sophie is a teenaged witch with wayward powers. She gets sent to Hex Hall, a magical reform school, to learn how to better control her powers. This book was a fun read. I think I would have liked it more if I were still a teenager. The stakes never really seemed all that high but it was fairly entertaining.
Sea Witch by Sarah Henning.
The Little Mermaid from the point of view of the sea witch. Well, sort of. Evie is a witch, best friends with a prince, whose other best friend, Anna drowned when they were children. Now, a girl who bears a striking resemblance to Anna, appears on the beach one day and she is determined to make the prince fall in love with her. Honestly, I was far more interested in Annemette than Evie. I think this would have been a really interesting story from her point of view instead.
To Kill and Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
Another Little Mermaid retelling but this time, the mermaid is a siren whose mission is to steal the prince’s heart. Literally. The first chapter of this book made it seem like this would be much darker than it ended up being. The romance was a little weak but still, this was an interesting take on the tale and an enjoyable read.
The Enchanted Sonata by Heather Dixon Wallwork
A Nutcracker retelling. In this version, Clara is a musician who receives a mysterious nutcracker on Christmas. She ends up whisked away to a magical world where all the children have been turned into toys and it seems that her, and her music, is the only thing that can turn them back. The Nutcracker is very dear to me, so I was overly critical of this book. It didn’t bear too much resemblance to the ballet or original fairy tale and it read more middle grade than YA. Still it was a cute read.
And the Ocean Was Our Sky by Patrick Ness
I absolutely loved A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness so I was excited for this. It was very different than what I was expecting. Simply put, this is Moby Dick told from the perspectives of whales. It was bizarre and I don’t really think I understood it fully but I’ve also never read Moby Dick before. The pictures were beautiful though and it is a very quick read.
Imposters by Scott Westerfeld
A new series that takes place in the Uglies universe. Frey and Rafi are twins but people only know Rafi. Frey has been raised to fight and be Rafi’s body double. I really enjoyed this book because of it’s connection to Uglies. Had I not read Uglies as a teen, I’m not sure this book would have held up on its own.
Lucy in the Sky
From the same author that did Go Ask Alice, this book is presented as a diary of a young girl that spirals out of control due to drug use. Objectively, this book isn't that great. The writing is poor, the story is unrealistic and it almost seems to glorify drugs rather than turn you off to them. BUT, it's enticing just like the other books in this series. It pulls you in and you want to keep reading. I read it in one sitting.
From Twinkle, with Love by Sandhya Menon
Twinkle is an aspiring film director. With the help of a geeky classmate, Twinkle embarks on making her first film for a local film festival. Along the way, Twinkle learns about friendship, family and love. A delightful fluffy read for fans of romantic comedies.
What Should be Wild by Julia Fine
This is a hard book to describe. Our main character is a girl who has been kept hidden from society due to a rare gift (or curse perhaps). Anything she touches dies, and anything that’s already dead comes back to life due to her touch as well. The story was bizarre and not entirely satisfying but it certainly was intriguing. I think it boils down to a matter of taste and I’m sure others could find much more merit in it than I did!
Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch
After the death of her mother, Lina is spending the summer in Italy with a father she never knew. While there, she is given her mother’s old journal which sends her down a journey to her mother’s past. With her mother’s guidance Lina discovers the magic that Italy has to offer. A cute and heartfelt read with some classic teen romance.
Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson
Mila’s best friend is dead and she wants to know who is responsible. So why not ask her? With an old grimoire, Mila finds a sleep to bring her best friend back and accidentally brings back two other murdered girls as well. With the spell’s limited time Mila and her undead girl gang try to solve the mysterious behind their deaths. Quirky, fun but also enthralling, this is a very original book.
Spellbook of the Lost and Found by Moira Fowley-Doyle
Best friends Olive and Rose begin to lose things. First it’s only small things but soon bigger things are going lost. Everything changes for the two when they meet 3 strangers in the woods and a mysterious spell book. At times, this was a very confusing read. I’m still not sure I fully understood it but the story was engaging and fairy tale like. A lovely read.
Far Far Away by Tom McNeal
A modern fairy tale like read. What starts off as a whimsical turns drastically dark as the story progresses. Our main character, Jeremy is somewhat of an outcast but attracts the attention of an outgoing and outspoken local girl. The most interesting aspect of this book is that Jeremy is able to speak to ghosts and the ghost of Jacob Grimm (who wrote all those fairy tales) has been his friend for years. Entirely random but a fantastic addition.
The Darkest Corners by Kara Thomas
Another YA thriller from Thomas. This was her first novel and I think it shows. It’s weaker than the other books she has written but still good. However, the last 3rd felt like a completely different book which was a bit jarring. If you like murder mystery/unsolved crimes, you’ll like this but definitely check out her other books too!
How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather
Our main character is a descendant of Cotton Mather, the man who sentenced women to their deaths during the Salem Witch Trails. Samantha moves to Salem with her stepmother and finds that she is not welcomed by her fellow classmates, descendants of the witches. And it turns out there might actually be some magic in Salem after all. This was silly fun. I was expecting something more like Chilling Adventures of Sabrina but that’s not the tone of this book at all. The love triangle was a little annoying and there was a reveal that was bizarre but overall it was an entertaining book.
Renegades by Marissa Meyer
I absolutely loved the Cinder series and Heartless but I wasn’t feeling this one so much. There’s nothing really wrong with it, the characters are well developed and the writing is good, however I just couldn’t gather any enthusiasm for it. I will say that the writing was rather slow and I felt that the book could have been a lot shorter than it was but if you like superheroes and villains, you should like this.
2.5 Stars
Ever by Gail Carson Levine
This is a retelling of the Biblical tale about Jephthah but had more of a Greek mythology feel with a cast of many gods and goddesses. It was a weird mixture of mythology and focused on a very weak romance. I think this book was aimed more for middle grade and might be more enjoyable for them.
Midnight Sun by Trish Cook
Yes, I read the novelization of the Bella Thorne movie that came out earlier this year. Yes, it was poorly written, the plot was laughable, and the romance cheesy. But, it was a quick read that kept my interest.
2 Stars
My Plain Jane by Cynthia Hand, Jodi Meadows and Brodi Ashman
I received this in my owlcrate and I’m still wondering why. The book is a retelling of Jane Eyre combined with ghostbusters because in this version, Jane can talk to ghosts. There’s also a secret ghost hunting society that wants recruit her but she’d rather be a nanny for Mr. Rochester. I really didn’t like this. The attempt at humor throughout was almost painful, the characters were dumb and I don’t understand why this book exists in the first place. I think it would have been better if it was just about Victorian era ghost hunters and not incorporate Jane Eyre in any way. This is part of a series in which the authors rewrite (very quirkily!) famous stories starring a character named Jane. From the reviews I read, their first book, My Lady Jane, was much better but I don’t even want to attempt to read it after this one.
September Girls by Bennett Madison
This is one of those books that I kept reading because of how bad it was. Sam is spending the summer in a small beach town that is overfilled with The Girls. That’s what Sam calls them because they are all blonde and beautiful. Turns out they are some sort of mermaid? It’s never really explained and they are all cursed and need to have sex with a virgin man in order to be free. Enter our sexist virgin, Sam. The women are written terribly, referred to as sluts and shanks and their asses and breasts are always mentioned. I have no idea how this book got published. But damn, was it fun to laugh at. Number of breast/chest/boob mentions: 27
Poetry (Both 5 Stars)
The Princess Saves Herself in This One by Amanda Lovelace
This book felt very personal to me (like I was reading the author’s inner thoughts) and I couldn’t always relate to some of the poems. I felt that the sequel dealt more with women’s issues on a whole and has something all women could relate too. Her poems are breathtaking though and so powerful.
The Witch Doesn’t Burn in This One by Amanda Lovelace
I picked this up out of curiosity and ended up reading it in one sitting. It is absolutely stunning. I think every woman should read this. Hell, I think every man should read this too. I can’t wait for the third one!
Short stories
The Language of Thorns: Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic by Leigh Bardugo (5 Stars)
Holy smokes, this was breathtaking! A collection of six short stories based on fairy tales/mythology. The stories are so utterly original though. Clever, satisfying with feminist themes. This is a must read for fairy tale lovers!
Amazon’s Dark Corners Collection by Various Authors
I happened to see this advertised on Goodreads and got it for free on Amazon Kindle Cloud Reader. This collection is 7 short stories of the horror variety. It’s hard to rate these since they are all written by different authors. I didn’t find any of these stories all that scary though. More so just sad. Interesting, but not all that gripping. My favorite stories were Miao Dao by Joyce Carol Oates and Sleep Tight Motel by Lisa Unger but I wouldn’t really recommend the others. Trigger Warning: The Remedy deals with depression and suicide and has a rather offensive/problematic ending.
Snow, Glass, Apples by Neil Gaiman (4 Stars)
This is a very dark retelling of Snow White from the queen’s point of view. Snow White is not the darling princess she is often portrayed as. This short story is very adult but not overly graphic. You can read it for free at the link I provided.
Matchless by Gregory Maguire (3 Stars)
A quick reimagining of The Little Match Girl. The main character isn’t the match girl but a young boy whose life intertwines with the match girl’s. This short story didn’t add anything new to the story since it’s focuses on an original character. The match girl is just briefly there. My feelings for this were mutual.
Re-reads
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares (5/4 Stars)
One of my favorite summer rereads!
Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot (5 stars)
Just as delightful and funny as the first time I read the series as a young teen
Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen (5 Stars
I’ve gotten into the habit of rereading this book every summer. It’s a book that can be read in one sitting and is so heartfelt.
Just Listen by Sarah Dessen (5 Stars)
This is my all time favorite Sarah Dessen novel. I highly recommend all of her novels.
The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black (4 Stars)
This takes place in the same world as the Cruel Prince. Some of the characters even appear in the latter novel. This is a standalone that reads like a modern fairy tale.

S1E19
The following morning unlike Malachi who was well rested, Aundrea struggled as usually to get out of bed. QJ on the other hand, woke up with bad stomach cramps. The cramps were so strong that he turned down the bacon and eggs that everybody else was eating. He attempted to take his vitamin with a cup of orange juice however after a quick burp, he rushed to the bathroom where he purged everything that he had eaten the night before.
“Junior, you alright?” Quincy asked as he approached the bathroom door. The door was locked and he was unable to walk in. When QJ opened the door, Deja decided to take his temperature.
“You’re a little warm”
It was decided that he’d stay home for today and depending on how he felt, he may have to stay home the following day. After breakfast, Deja dropped the kids off to school while Quincy suggested QJ take some Robitussin.
“Yuck!” QJ exclaimed.
“Okay then, I’ll go to the grocery store. I’ll be right back. You need to go lay down for a bit. I’m gonna get get some sprite, crackers, and some soup.”
While Quincy was tending to his ill son, Anita was tending to some business at work regarding a case involving a pharmaceutical company’s new drug. She had just had a moderately successful case where her client won primary custody of his children and the mother ordered to take anger management classes. In this case however, this is affecting children primarily in the lower income Black and Latino communities.
“I need you to read over this case, I’ve already got an acting lawyer on it, however I need you to prepare the documentation for it” her boss requested.
“Sure sir.”
“Thank you. I’ll be back around 11:00 am”
This is someone who graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s in Marketing. She was in the top 10% of her graduating class in Law school. She’s always been a great debater and was prepared for in the even that she had to resume the position of being the firm representative.
After nodding in agreement, she took the time to contact her old classmate from law school Latrice.

Latrice recently started her own practice and tends to keep up with the trends going on in lower income communities due to growing up in south central and seeing first hand the neglect at hospitals in those communities.
An hour later she took her lunch break. As she rode the elevator with her colleague Carmen, she decided she wanted to talk as little as possible about the case. She decided to text Yvonne who was in between flashbacks to her sons high school graduation and research of her own.
“You can just ride with me” Carmen said
“Thank you”
After Anita and Carmen arrive to the restaurant, Carmen asked “Do you know anyone affected personally by this?”
“No, I didn’t grow up in a low income area and my people are from south Louisiana, swamp land.” She continued, “That said, I’m not unfamiliar with that shit that they try to plague black and brown communities with.”
Looking at the menu, Anita ordered a Caesar salad and a mango tea while Carmen ordered a house salad with no cheese with a water.
“Can I add grilled chicken?”, Anita asked noticing the option to upgrade for $2.00 more.
“Sure I’ll go get that right in”
“So how’s the real estate thing going? Or did you put that on hold?”
“I start my classes in two weeks.”
Like her sisters, she’s got a mind to make money. As a little girl she had always had a thing for Numbers and was drawn to the business side of interactions. Furthermore it was a good idea to have something to fall back on.
“I’d eventually like to branch out into handling real estate cases as a lawyer. I’m gonna be a black girl who rocks! My sisters and I are black WOMEN who rock!”
After that statement she begin looking at the alcoholic beverage menu on the table. She’s actually consider the drink had she not had to go right back to work.
“Our boss would never know”
“Too risky”
Anita enjoyed a sporadic alcoholic beverage but being the sole black person at the firm she decided she was not going to put her job at risk for the sake of satisfying her taste buds. As their food arrived they took a moment to appreciate that the firm the worked at closed for lunch. Anita Caesar salad came with a vinaigrette type of Caesar dressing and romaine, croutons, and Asiago cheese.
After eating and collecting their checks Anita made a quick run to he restroom before they headed out. Barely beating their boss back to work they arrived 5 minutes after 1:00 pm.
The rest of the day was rather mild other than the occasional brief readings. Anita spent the rest of her evening researching the company and reviewing their history. Apparently this isn’t this companies first run in with a lawsuit of this nature. A similar incident happened back in South Carolina with multiple residents coming up dead. This was settled out of court when the company paid a total of 35.9 million to a total of 15 families.
That evening she managed to work in a short run and a shower before putting on a curlean blue top and a pair a blue jeans. She met Latrice 15 minutes earlier than what was expected.
After a hug, they managed to get a table when Anita jumped right to the chase.
“So what do you know?”
“Well I know that the drug is referred to by residents as the "trance drug". This drug is altering our kids minds. Another one, but it's got 'em beamed out of their skulls. It's like Xanax times 5. They've been doing this shit for years. They put steroids in groceries in these urban communities, the medical professionals and I use that term loosely are half-assed.”
Latrice referred to this drug as the damnation drug.
"It's making women sterile. Kids are foaming at the mouth. I've heard that one of the plaintiffs in this lawsuit has a child in ICU. The plaintiffs are asking the firm that you are at to represent them. This drug, from what I've heard is a combination of an emetic and some sort of psychedelic."
"My brother-in-law is a pharmacist. He'd probably be able to tell me exactly what's in it.”
“It's some bullshit that they've come up with in a lab”
“Isn’t it all?”
They looked at the menu for a moment when Anita said "Girl, I ate a salad for lunch, I'm ordering a steak!"
"Well I am going to get this chicken and shrimp pasta"
“What would you like to drink?“ the waitress asked
“Sprite”
“Strawberry Lemonade“
They periodically talked during their meals when Latrice revealed that she was engaged.

It wasn’t that Anita was afraid of commitment, she just wanted a beau who was on her level or higher.

Well I’m gonna get a to-go box, I’ll probably eat the rest of this steak for lunch tomorrow.
Later on Yvonne received a phone call from Abram.

She then had a flashback to his 13th birthday. She took him out to eat at an Italian restaurant where he created his own pizza along with a piece of white chocolate cake for dessert. The cake had a raspberry glaze that was homemade. He loved Italian as well as Mexican and it was usually one of these two choices that he requested on his birthday. 13 was a milestone as he hosted his first dance party that weekend. His birthday generally falls in during a weekday. At 18, he’s not so much of a partier, but likes a social setting.
After sitting for a minute to ponder on one milestone, she had a flashback to his high school graduation. She thought about him in his cap and gown, remembering his name called as he picked up his diploma. They had been close all his life. Sending him off was rather bittersweet, though she wasn’t far.
“I just pray he doesn’t back down last minute” she said before shutting her light off and going to bed.
TO BE CONTIUNED WITH EPISODE 20.

The Beginning
Circa, January 25, 1958: Double Wedding, suburbs of Chicago, of 2 sisters (the only two children born to their parents). December 4, 1958 1st Child, a son, is born 2.5 weeks late and, of all the subsequent children, that first child is the tallest and heaviest. 6 months later, July 1959, the first cousin, a female, is born.
From that point on, each sister has a child born “approximately” 18 months following the previous birth; and, each time one sister has a boy, the other sister has a girl. By 1968, 10 years post-wedding, John & Carol have 6 children (4 boys and 2 girls) while Mare & Paul have 7 children (5 girls and 2 boys) and, 4 years later, add one more girl to the mix for a total of 8 with 6 girls and 2 boys.
The final count from this one double wedding is 14 children born to two sets of Roman Catholic families of Irish descent (and both John & Carol are 100% Irish). Both families purchase homes about 2.5 miles apart and every Holiday, birthday and special event are celebrated as one large family.
Meanwhile, with John having been raised in the same village as John & Carol are residing (i.e. Hinsdale), John has two brothers and a cousin/adopted sister living in the area where his parents still reside; the two sister’s parent’s still reside 2 miles away in Clarendon Hills where Carol’s sister and husband reside as well.
With John’s older/eldest brother residing in Hinsdale and he and his wife having 6 children of their own, a dozen children with the same last name attend the Catholic Church’s grammar school where the Nuns could never keep track of which kid went with which set of parents - particularly since 3 grades had two children a piece (one from each family).
Unfortunately, however, the back story is necessary in order to piece together what has been occurring throughout the children’s lives. With John and his brothers having attended the same Catholic School as their children - and with their father (our grandfather) being physically, emotionally and verbally abusive, the boys had a difficult childhood.
However, with John’s elder/eldest brother being the brightest, most athletic, best grades, most popular and the pride and joy of their parents while John grew up with average grades with lots of allergies and not being very athletic, their father continually picked on John as not being “as good” as his brother in a whole host of areas. In short, as the middle child, John (at least perceived) that he was picked on and abused the most with constant put downs, never ending criticism and frequently take down to the basement for beatings.
Throughout his upbringing, John believed that he was never going to be as smart, as good, as successful as worthy as his eldest brother; thus, he grew to deeply resentful of his older brother and carried a great around an enormous amount of anger with him into adulthood yet, because of the times and the fact that abuse/anger/resentment were not part of the social consciousness for most adults, few recognized something that John did his best to conceal until he began to have children of his own.
While it took many years to make sense of things (and, only then, it was first pointed out by a Shrink and then later admitted to by John’s wife, Carol), but the deep anger and resentment that John had held onto was not controlled well because of his drinking and hair trigger temper. Furthermore, because of John’s twisted rationalizations, he believed that it was the favoritism shown to his eldest brother that was the reason why he was abused and victimized by their father.
Therefore, unconsciously, John immediately began to believe that his eldest son was not going to be shown any differential treatment as he grew up. John was bound and determined that subsequent children born to him would not be made to feel inferior or be the subject of hostility, anger and abuse. However, to everyone’s detriment, John’s immense anger resulted in him taking it a step further when he began to “pay back” his father and brother by inflicting the same (and even worse) treatment upon his eldest son.
John’s eldest son was < 18 months old (his second son had not yet born and his eldest son could not yet walk) when his older brother (and his wife) witnessed something very disturbing in early 1960. John’s older brother had stopped by, without calling first, to visit John and his wife; and, as they approached the house, they could hear John screaming and a child crying.
Given the loud disturbance, they chose not to knock and, instead, entered the house through the back door into the kitchen. From that vantage point, once they were standing in the kitchen, they could see straight through the dining room right into the living room where John was holding his son up by one arm and screaming at the son to “stop crying you baby, grow up..” (among other things); but, what truly disturbed him was that, as John was screaming, he was also hitting the child with his free hand across the child’s back, his stomach and even his head.
It was just then that John’s the brother looked over and saw John’s wife just watching it all play our without saying a word; and, as she casually looked over to notice the brother and his wife, it was then that they chose to walk right out the back door they’d come in from. It would be more than 5 decades later when John’s older brother recounted that precise story to John’s eldest son, Mike.
Although, before recounting the story, Mike’s Uncle asked “how was your childhood?” Completely stunned and unsure what to say Mike asked “why do you ask?” His Uncle replied “because your Aunt and I witnessed something disturbing when you were a baby and we’d always been concerned that what we’d witnessed that day may have been continued throughout your childhood.”
After recounting what they’d witnessed, Mike (the son, i.e. me) began to cry eventually saying that “yes, that conduct continued..” “why are you crying?” his/my Uncle asked? Mike replied “because no one believed me when I spoke up...” and, “when I finally did speak up” (while in therapy) “my mother stated that when/if your father ever got angry and took it out on you, it was your fault... you were to blame, you never learned to keep quiet like the rest of us.”
Therefore, after growing up with the threat of physical, emotional and verbal abuse occurring at any moment, my mother had tried for decades to blame me not only for the abuse I suffered but she also blamed me for ALL of the discord (i.e. the fighting, the screaming, the physical abuse, the horrendous things that were said to me and the resulting toll all of that took on the family) that took place when we were growing up. And, she not only said this to me numerous times but she’d also blamed me for all of it whenever she spoke to the younger siblings. Each/every time anything was ever referenced re: fights, abuse, verbal tirades etc., by ANYONE in the family, my mother’s first response was to blame me, Mike, for it.
“Why did she do that??” Because to blame, Mom didn’t have to take responsibility for anything that occurred; blaming me would both prevent anyone from blaming my father and it would also alleviate anyone at anytime from saying to Mom “why didn’t you stop Dad from abusing Mike?” By making me responsible for all of the unpleasantness that occurred while we grew up shifted the focus of blame away from her and my father solely onto me. How do I know this? Because that’s what she would say to me each/every time I inquired.
However, when I’d come back to her and remind her that I wasn’t speaking about anything that may have occurred as a teenager when I was thrown out and disowned several times; instead, I’d remind her “I’m talking about those acts, that behavior and that cruelness that took place on Quincy St.” (the first home we lived in until I was 12 years old). However, whenever I’d get specific to the timeline I was inquiring about (i.e. under the ages of 10 or 12), she’d leave the room or discount that it wasn’t bad.
In short, she never wanted to talk about the time period from 1961 - 1971 (a time period that, even “if” Dad was abusive, most people would respond by saying “what was your Mother, where was she during this time?” Obviously, at this young age, it’s difficult to make a case that it was all “Mike’s fault” and further calls into question where she was during this time.
With both parents unwilling/unable to admit that they were “wrong” and a complete lack of accountability of who was at fault for so much anger, resentment and awful memories, neither parent would ever state that they did something inappropriate or were simply wrong; and, while they frequently told anyone that would listen that the other party was “always wrong” (Mom said this often regarding Dad), they both - when pressed - would conclude that all of the strife was of Mike’s making. This went on well into adulthood and past!
The fact that they blamed Mike was easy well into adulthood because, from the time Mike went to college, he rarely came home to visit. I/Mike was unable to visit my family for a variety of reasons beginning with the fact that I was the one blamed for everything that was wrong; Dad would never admit that he took out all of his anger and resentment of his brother on me and Mom would never-ever admit that she knew and/or witnessed everything Dad did to me but did “nothing” to help me - in spite of my pleadings with her to help me!
However, it’s much deeper than just that! Because I/Mike was born gay and struggled deeply with self-hate/self-disgust/self-esteem - and because my mother would never accept the fact that she ever had a gay son (thus, prevented him from ever talking about or referring to his personal life) - and refused to allow me to ever bring someone I was dating home to meet the family, I was made to feel isolated, loathed upon, disconnected from and not part of the family.
Moreover, my father’s verbal abuse growing up extended to him using terms such as “disgusted”, “ashamed of”, and “embarrassed by” to describe how he felt about me; therefore, by being gay, I heard things such as “he was right all along”; therefore, now it was Mom co-opting these terms by refusing to allow me to talk about my charity work, tell family members what it was like to care for an AID’s patient or to respond to a cousins question on whether I was dating anyone at this time or not.
In short, I was not allowed to bring up or even comment on anything about myself beyond my job, my car and the weather; and, by going along with these pre-conditions, I would return to wherever I was living and fall into a deep, deep depression for days, even weeks, because: A.) I couldn’t be honest and open; B.) no one really wanted to know me; C.) I was “less-than” everyone else (thus, so was any man I was dating); D.) I was not worthy or good enough to be liked (let alone loved) because of my differences; therefore, E.) I would ALWAYS be different and ALWAYS be less-than; thus, how could I not be deeply depressed after each visit???
As I entered into adulthood, I found it all that more difficult to get past those awful childhood memories when my own family blamed me for their own respective harsh memories of childhood combined with the fact that my own mother’s refusal to admit she had a gay son meant that she still opted the terms such as: “disgusted”, “ashamed of”, and “embarrassed by” to refer to me.
Therefore, ANY/ALL mention of “abuse” or “hitting” or “fighting” was referred to by my Mother as either: “Mike is lying” or “Mike’s too blame or at fault” If she couldn’t pass off that I made it all up and was lying, then it was all my fault and I was too blame for talking too much. At no time was anyone else at fault!

History of Lyons: La Grange (1884)
History of Cook County, Illinois, From the Earliest Times to the Present Day, Complete in One Volume
By A. T. Andreas
Chicago: A. T. Andreas, Publisher. 1884.
History of Lyons
La Grange
This beautiful suburb, attested by large boards along the line of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad to be the “garden spot” of Cook County, is situated on that railroad about fifteen miles from Chicago. It has two depots on this line, one situated at Fifth Avenue and the other at Stone Avenue, the old depot, however, which was called West Lyons, was situated a short distance west of the Stone-avenue depot. At this point the first settlement was made, although it comprised but a few persons. The land upon which Kensington Heights, and subsequently La Grange, was laid out was a part of four hundred and forty acres owned by Robert Leitch.
Robert Leitch was born in Orleans County, N. Y., in 1820, of John and Catherine Leitch, and came to Cook County May 2, 1837. He worked by the month as a farm-laborer for nearly four years, and for the same length of time for Wadsworth, Dyer & Chapin, of Chicago, in the packing business. He came to the section of country where La Grange now is, purchasing four hundred and forty acres of land. At that time there was no one resident of the immediate vicinity, except Thomas Covell, who resided in the timber, and he has stood upon the porch of his house and shot wolves and deer. Mr. Leitch followed farming for a number of years in connection with cattle-dealing and stock-raising and shipped a great many cattle to New York. He was the first man to settle on the prairie and broke the first land between Lyons and Brush Hill. In 1844, he married Miss Mary A. Wilder, daughter of Colonel Benjamin and Elizabeth Wilder. They have eight children—Maria F., Benjamin J., Robert, Belle, Edward B., Zephaniah G., Walter B., and Dollie F. Mr. Leitch was Commissioner of Highways for eight years and also served on the school board for eight years. In 1870, he moved to Chicago and engaged in the distillery business; the distillery burned down in 1872, after which he was connected with the Garden City Distillery. Mr. Leitch sold the tract of four hundred and forty acres to Mrs. Breed, and sold part thereof to Franklin D. Cossitt, who laid out the town. He now, however, resides on a portion of his original tract, having returned to La Grange in 1881.
In this connection, it is germane to remark upon the adventitious booms that elevated the prices of real estate temporarily, as some locality would seem especially favored by the suburban fever, or an imagined right of way, and under such speculative conditions a great deal of money was realized and lost in real estate. In the vicinity of La Grange some much mutations have been experienced, and also in that vicinity settlement has been retarded because of tenacious holding of real estate for speculative prices instead of being willing to accept a fair price from actual settlers. Franklin D. Cossitt and D. B. Lyman, however, have manifested a liberal and public spirit in their transactions and by their exertions La Grange is a garden spot; the natural bleakness of the prairie transformed by the liberal planting of thousands of deciduous trees, and the grassy waste made into a garden; the landscape testifying to the enterprise of the projector and the hundreds of handsome dwellings manifesting the appreciation of the property buyers.
To revert to the antiquities of the town. Mr. Leitch states that the first road that ran through there was about a mile wide, and was called the Chicago & Dixon road; the road traversing the same route, although circumscribed in its width, is now designated Ogden Avenue. The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad came through about the year 1862, being opened on June 1st. The depot at West Lyons was established about 1868, the agents being J. J. Kimmons, W. E. Smith, W. F. Billings, A. Potter, J. A. Bryden, John Unold, A. McMillan, W. E. Stanger, E. O. Smith, A. W. Ladd, and E. O. Smith. John Van Ottrick, who was president of the road at the time, predicted that it would never pay. “A prophet come to judgment!” The road then ran to Aurora, and thence to Batavia, intersecting the Chicago & North-Western at Turner Junction. Prior to this, the stages of Frink & Walker ran to Doty’s at Lyons, thence to Naperville, and from there to Aurora. The first school was established about 1852-53, and was taught by Miss Gertrude Smith.
Samuel Vial, one of the oldest living settlers of Lyons Township, lives in the vicinity of La Grange; he was born in Chester, Orange Co., N. Y., in 1819, son of Joseph and Louisa (Smith) Vial; he came to Chicago with his parents in the fall of 1833, the family locating in Lyons Township in the spring of 1834. Mr. Vial was married in 1846, to Miss Margaret McNaughton, daughter of George and Jane McNaughton; she died in 1856, leaving four children, Jane, George M., Joseph and Louisa. In the fall of 1856 he married Mrs. Gertrude North, who died in 1879. Mr. Vial was Supervisor of Lyons Township for five years.
The subdivision of La Grange was made by Franklin D. Cossitt in 1871, and since that time its progress has been steady and material. Before this subdivision there was a little coterie settled where John Unold’s store now is, but there was no extended settlement.
On May 26, 1879, a petition was filed for the incorporation of La Grange as a village, and upon June 11 of that year an election was held to ascertain whether Section 4 and the east half of the east half of Section 5, Township 38 north, Range 12 east, of the third principal meridian, should be thus incorporated; and the following vote was cast:
For village organization forty-two votes, against village organization, thirty-four votes.
On July 10, 1879, the election for town officers resulted: F. D. Cossitt, L. L. Bassford, P. G. Gardner, J. D. Myers, E. B. Clark and T. W. McMillan, Trustees, of which board Mr. Cossitt was subsequently elected President; William G. Little, Police Magistrate, and Benjamin T. Lewis, Clerk.
July 24, 1879, D. B. Lyman was appointed village attorney, and the Trustees divided themselves by lot into holders of one and two year terms of office, as follows: One year, L. L. Bassford, P. G. Gardner and T. W. McMillan; two year, F. D. Cossitt, J. D. Myers, and E. B. Clark. J. K. Philo was also made Village Treasurer. The poll-tax was declared to be $1.50, for which two days’ labor could be substituted.
August 27, 1879, the prohibitory four-gallon measure became one of the ordinances of the village, and there is not now (1884) a saloon within its limits. The same day David C. Crain was made constable.
Election of April 26, 1880 resulted: P. G. Gardner, T. W. McMillan and F. H. Vallette, Trustees for two years, B. T. Lewis, Clerk and Gustaf A. Johnson, Constable. P. G. Gardner was made President of the board, and J. K. Philo continued in office as Treasurer. William Walmsley was elected to fill the place of J. D. Myers, Trustee, on June 19, 1880, removed from the village, and Samuel Lewis was made Postmaster. The annual appropriation bill for 1879-80 was $350.00—not a very lavish expenditure. The office of village marshal was created August 20, 1880, and Charles P. Amet appointed thereto for two years.
Election April 19, 1881, resulted: William Walmsley, W. W. Weatherstone and E. B. Clark, Trustees, and J. A. Brydon, Clerk. P. G. Gardner was made President of the Board of Trustees, and J. K. Philo, re-appointed Village Treasurer. The office of pound-master was created in May, and George D. Unold appointed thereto; he declined the office, and Gustaf A. Johnson was thereupon appointed.
Election April 18, 1882, resulted: F. D. Cossitt, E. G. Squire, James Travis, Trustees, and J. O. Metcalf, Clerk. E. B. Clark was elected President of the board. The members are thirty-eight.
There is one manufacturing establishment at La Grange, where silversmithing and manufacturing for the jobbing and wholesale trade is performed under the management of J. P. Weatherstone.
The existence of one other institution has to be noted, an unfortunate parenthesis in the history of La Grange, the home of Mrs. Anna Schoeck, particulars whereof can be studied at length in the newspapers of the present year.

Monroe to France, 1794.
Known as “The Citizen Genêt Affair” it began in 1793 when Edmond-Charles Genêt (1763-1834) was dispatched to the United States to promote American support for France's wars with Spain and Britain. Genêt was a short and ruddy thirty-year old with flaming red hair, a sloping forehead and an aquiline nose. Gouveneur Morris (1752-1816) said he had “the manner and look of an upstart.” He acted like a political amateur but had an excellent resume. He was fluent in Greek by age six, the translator of Swedish history by twelve and spoke seven languages as well as being an accomplished musician. He could be charming and engaging but without a sense of prudence.
Genêt arrived in Charleston, South Carolina on the French frigate Embuscade on April 8th. Instead of traveling to the capital, Philadelphia, to present himself to the president, Genêt stayed in South Carolina. Genêt's goal in South Carolina was to recruit and arm American privateers who would join French expeditions against the British. After raising a militia, Genêt set sail toward Philadelphia, stopping along the way to marshal support for the French cause, arriving on May 18. His actions endangered American neutrality in the war between France and Britain, which President George Washington (1732-1799) had declared in his Neutrality Proclamation of April 22. Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson (1743-1816) informed him that his actions were unacceptable, but Genêt protested. Genêt's privateer ships began to capture British ships, and his militia was preparing to move against the Spanish. Genêt defied the wishes of the U.S. government. Genêt replied obstinately. President Washington and his Cabinet then demanded that France recall Genêt as its Ambassador. The Jacobins, taking power in France in January 1794, sent an arrest notice which asked Genêt to come back to France.
Genêt, knowing that he would likely be sent to the guillotine, asked Washington for asylum which he was granted by coaxing of Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804). After complying with the United States’s request for the Genêt to be recalled, the French government then requested a trade with the recall of Ambassador Gouveneur Morris, who had taken over for Thomas Jefferson in 1789 and was “hostile” to the revolutionary regime [x].
In the early months of 1794, George Washington hoping to replace Ambassador to France Gouveneur Morris, first offered Chancellor Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813) of New York the appointment as American minister to France in a letter of April 19th, 1794 [x]. Known as “The Chancellor”, Robert R. Livingston was a tall, round-faced man, with dark eyes and worry lines etched into his face, his dark hair lay above his high forehead and prominent brows. He had served in the Continental Congress and the Declaration committee of five with John Adams (1735-1826), Thomas Jefferson, Roger Sherman (1721-1793) and Benjamin Franklin (1706-1791) in 1776. Coming from a wealthy family his house on Hudson River, south of Clermont was burned to the ground during raids from British General John Burgoyne (1722-1792) in 1777. An honorary member of the Society of Cincinnati, he administered the oath of office to Washington in 1789 at the then capital of the nation, New York on the second floor of Federal Hall. He was a Democratic-Republican in opposition to Federalists like John Jay (1745-1829) and Alexander Hamilton. His previous rival was George Clinton (1739-1812) and he gathered men like Aaron Burr (1756-1836) into his circle.
The president wanted to nominate a prominent Democratic-Republican for the position. After receiving an uninformative reply to his first letter, Washington then reiterated the offer to Livingston in a letter of May 14th 1794, but Livingston ultimately declined to serve. Congressman James Madison (1751-1736) turned it down as well due to a fear of sea travel and his tendency to seasickness.
Livingston described more fully his reasoning for declining this appointment in a letter to James Monroe of May 16th. After mentioning his personal circumstances and concerns about the politics of his state of New York, he continued:
"Besides that differing so much as I do from the g[ovt] in Administration I am satisfied that I should either be compelled to violate my own principles by yielding to theirs or risk my reputation by incurring their resentment" [x].
Livingston felt his views so strayed from the current administration that it would be improper to accept the appointment and feared his own reputation and image to be smeared if he would take it. He also thought that if he stepped down as Chancellor of New York the entire politics of his home state may change into an unfavorable light. Monroe, reading these cited grievances after receiving the letter would be unknowing that by 1797 when he was recalled from France, Livingston’s fears became his reality.
George Washington then turned to another leading Democratic-Republican, the then thirty-six year old Virginian Senator James Monroe. After fighting a close battle for the House seat in 1789 against ally James Madison, he returned to his law practice, his family and his farm. In 1790, Virginia Senator William Grayson (1740-1790) died, becoming the first American Congressman to die while in office, Monroe soon became the first to take over for one who had died while in office on November 9th and was elected to serve the remainder of Grayson's term [x]. It was then in a quarter through 1794, that James Monroe tasked by Washington for the diplomatic position.
James Monroe had never before been to Europe. In 1781 under the tutelage of his mentor, Monroe at age twenty-three nearly bought passage on a ship to the continent to enhance his education but the plan fell through mostly due to the raging war. The first mention of this possible appointment is in an April 6th favor [x] to John Nicholas from Washington. The news of the appointment was conveyed to Monroe whilst he was in Philadelphia on May 26th via Edmund Randolph (1753-1813), then Secretary of State of the cabinet. In a letter of the same day to Madison [x], Monroe expressed a hesitation at accepting the position, “I have been with Mr. R. & have given him no final answer.” But told he had promised to meet with Randolph in half an hour to discuss his answer. That very same day, Monroe excepted the request after thinking and Randolph notified Washington the same day [x], and on May 27th Washington nominated Monroe:
“The Executive provisory Council of the French Republic having requested me to recal Gouverneur Morris, our Minister Plenipotentiary in France; I have thought proper, in pursuance of that request, to recal him. I therefore nominate, James Monroe, of Virginia, as Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States to the said Republic.” [x]
The Senate confirmed the following day [x]. To the Committee of Public Safety of the French Republic, Washington wrote:
“I have now made choice of James Monroe, one of our distinguished Citizens to reside near the french Republic, in the quality of Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States of America.”
After the senate confirmation, James Monroe met cordially with Head of the Senate, Vice President John Adams who oversaw the entire event, writing to his eldest son John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) after the confirmation:
“Mr Monroe, who is appointed Minister Plenipotentiary to France, Yesterday desired me to mention to You in my first Letter, that he was very happy to hear of your nomination and that he hoped for a good Understanding and a good Correspondence with you.” [x]
At this time, twenty-seven year old John Quincy had recently been appointed U.S. Minister Resident to the Netherlands and would be throughout history known as one of the greatest and most experienced diplomats America has known. Five inches shorter than his future presidential predecessor, he had penetrating black eyes and already balding. He dressed plainly and without great care (something his mother, Abigail Adams (1744-1818), complained of to him [x]) and he had a high, shrill voice. His health, generally poor, he frequently complained of various aches and pains. Intermittently throughout his life he wrestled with bouts of mental depression, what he called “uncontrollable dejection of spirits” and “a sluggish carelessness of life.” He admitted having at times “an imaginary wish that [life] were terminated.” [x].
There was no better source to insight into his mind than the man himself. In his diary he described himself, “I am a man of reserved, cold, austere and forbidding manners, my political adversaries say, a gloomy misanthropist, and my personal enemies, an unsocial savage. With a knowledge of the actual defect in my character, I have not the pliability to reform it.” [x]. Mostly due to his depression, he would become rather awkward in crowds. To his wife, he said “I never was and never shall be what is commonly termed a popular man, being as little qualified by nature, education, or habit for the arts of a courtier as I am desirous of being courted by others…I am certainly not intentionally repulsive in my manners and deportment, and in my public station I never made myself inaccessible to any human being. But I have no powers of fascination; none of the honey which the profligate proverb says is the true fly-catcher.” [x]
Born in Massachusetts, John Quincy would experience the creation of a nation first hand--literally; from his front yard in Braintree he watched the Battle of Bunker Hill with his mother and siblings in 1775 [x]. At the age of ten, his father John Adams, accepted to become Ambassador to France and he took his eldest son with him across the sea. By age 14, John Quincy was receiving training in the diplomatic corps and going to resounding school. In 1781, he accompanied diplomat Francis Dana to Russia, serving as his secretary and translator. In 1783, he traveled to Paris to serve as secretary to his father, negotiating the Treaty of Paris and an end to the revolution. During this time, John Quincy attended schools in Europe and became fluent in French, Dutch and German. Returning home in 1785, he entered Harvard College and graduated in 1787.
In 1790, John Quincy became a practicing attorney in Boston. As tensions mounted between Britain and France, he supported President George Washington's neutrality policy of 1793. After serving three years in the Netherlands, Adams would go on to become U.S. Minister Resident to Prussia from 1797 to 1801. The friendship Monroe would get deeper into with John Quincy over his life would be one of the most important political and personal friendships he ever constructed with another.
Partly due to his hesitation at welcoming the job was the possibility of having to leave his family. It was common, as with Thomas Jefferson and John Adams to not bring your entire family with you as you traveled across the sea. It was this idea that stopped Monroe, not wanted to disrupt the domestic life with his wife and growing child. In the end, it was Elizabeth’s delightful reassurance that she would come with him on the journey which prompted him from any more pause to accept the honored appointment. This was already a theme in Monroe’s life, he disliked having to abandon his family while he traveled, even when he was only away for a few nights. Though we have but two letters between Mr. and Mrs. Monroe, there is an eerie sense of loneliness and longing in his letters to others, constantly speaking of his wife and when away, asking if anyone could give him news on any “alien” changes to young Eliza, pondering how his “little monkey” was doing. Whenever he could, it would become a habit to bring his entire family.
Monroe knew that he would face certain alienation from both parties if he failed with his mission. The instructions to his duties, sent by Edmund Randolph confirmed the air of importance that was coming with his new role, “You go, sir, to France, to strengthen the friendship with that country... You will let it be seen, that in case of war, with any nation on earth, we shall consider France as our first and natural ally...”. He remeasured of the president’s un-wavering support of French ties to the new country. Monroe was also asked to give intelligence on French navy, French agriculture and French commerce. Although knowing Monroe spoke fluent French, Randolph asked him to not put anything in writing but verbally “in your own language.” It was under Washington’s request that Monroe leave as soon as possible [x].
In a May 30th letter to Monroe, Aaron Burr urged him to hire John Bartow Prevost (1766-1825)--Burr’s stepson--as his secretary. Monroe eventually passed over Prevost from another. However, Monroe didn't completely decline the offer and said that if Prevost traveled to France at some point, he could become his secretary [x]. He would sail a year after Monroe arrived in Paris and would end up serving as his secretary. Working so closely with Monroe gathered them closer as in his first term, in 1818, Prevost would appointed by President James Monroe as an American Commissioner to examine the state of Spanish colonies in South America. He would also be tasked by Secretary of State John Quincy Adams with securing U.S. possession of the Oregon Territory as reparations from the British government for the War of 1812 as spelled out in the Treaty of Ghent.
Meeting with Monroe nearly every day, by June 1st [x], Madison was reporting to Jefferson from the nation’s temporary capital of Philadelphia that Monroe was “busy in preparing for his embarkation” but that he was “puzzled as to the mode of getting to France.” for he had never been before. Monroe “leans towards an American vessel which is to sail from Baltimore for Amsterdam.” Due to the amount of travel across the Atlantic, a direct passage to France was “scarce to be had”. A fear of Monroe’s was “the risk of being captured [and] carried into England.” this fear was highly warranted, as John Jay was currently headed to Britain to discuss the recent capture of many American vessels without any reason. By June 6th with the Senate adjourned for the week, Madison stated Monroe had chosen a port and confirmed he would be leaving from Baltimore, Maryland [x].
Monroe did not relish in the power of the appointment, "The circum- stances of sending an envoy to negotiate with Engl'd at the time that the Minister of France, on the ground and clothed with similar powers, is only amused with acts of civility, shews that a connection with the former power is the real object of the executive.” Why should we court England's favor and "degrade our character?"
Monroe hoped to see Thomas Jefferson before his departure from Philadelphia by coach in a “day or two.” [x]. “I shall sail from Bal: for which place I sit out in 4. days hence. Tis possible the vessel may not be ready altho I am advised she is.” In case they did not see one another before leaving he had a final request; feeling anxious about the Virginia trio’s cypher which he left "in a small writing desk at my house,” he asked Jefferson to “get and send it after me in case I do not see you before I sail?” With that, he finished off by saying that French Revolutionary Georges Jacques Danton had been executed and Monroe was expected to arrive in the city amidst a roaring and bloody revolution.
June 10th, the Monroe clan of three accompanied by James Madison left their Philadelphia residence on Arch street between 6th and 7th street [x] traveling by horse carriage to Baltimore, Maryland, the port that their ship would be leaving from. The first session of the Third Congress had just come to an end and Madison was on his way to Montpelier. Monroe gave him power-of-attorney for use in the settlement of various business affairs, including those connected with the estate of Mrs. Monroe's father who had recently died; handing him a letter to deliver to Jefferson.
The route between Baltimore and Philadelphia was a popular one said to be better to travel upon in the years following the Constitution and “exhibit[ed] for the greater part of the way, an aspect of savage isolation” [x]. The roads were about 103 miles or more [x] and took six days (if good weather) mostly [x]. The Monroes, with Madison, traveling in agreeable summer weather by coach, arrived on the night of June 13th, as reported Madison to his father [x] only surprisingly a three day trip in total for them.
In Baltimore, Monroe was greeted and met with his uncle Joseph Jones (1727-1805) [x]. Monroe’s maternal uncle, Joseph Jones was his mentor, father-figure and guiding force throughout his entire life after his father died when he was sixteen. Jones gave to Monroe the custody of his fifteen year old son, Joseph Jones Jr (1779–1808). Jones was sending his son under Monroe guardianship to Paris to enhance his education. In exchange, Jones agreed to watch over Monroe’s plantation and his two living brothers, thirty year old Andrew--and father without work--and twenty-two year old Joseph Jones who had yet to solicit a proper law practice and was living on his eldest brother’s plantation.
James’s youngest brother was thrown out of the University of Edinburgh in 1789 and payment for his tuition finally was notified as well as for his paid passage to and from the country. Tight for cash, it only added to Monroe’s future debt problems (and also due to being not payed for his lifelong work in US government a sum of $70,000), he had already payed seven hundred dollars for his families passage but asked his uncle to send more money to his troublesome brother. Despite this, he also sent more money from his dying pocket to his older sister who had raised him as a child, giving her money to have her children educated [x].
Hearing of France’s famine, Monroe ordered a few cases of Virginian ham to take with him, as well as sugar loaves and other provisions [x].
Madison mentioned Monroe’s unrest the night before his voyage. The evening of June 17th, 1794, Monroe dashed off a letter to Thomas Jefferson [x] regretting that he should not have the pleasure of seeing him again before his departure, contemplating that they will "return in about 3. or 4. years at farthest—perhaps sooner.” Still in the company of Madison, he mentioned “you will shortly see Mr. Madison who leaves this tomorrow or next day”, Madison left that night with his uncle Joseph Jones, heading to Virginia. He requested that if they both found anything that would be important to Monroe’s mission that they notify him by post at closest time. He left a little money to Jefferson that he owed. He entrusted Jefferson on,
“...fixing on a spot where my house shall be erected. The doubt will be between the hill to the left of the road as you approach towards Blenheim or the one where the barn stands. On which ever you place it I have given orders for an enclosure and the commencment of those improvments which are contemplated. Your advice on that head as well as the most suitable for the commencment of orchards of different kinds will be regarded.”
Before leaving, Monroe settled his assets, trading 42,000 acres of Kentucky land as payment for a 3,500 acre plantation adjacent to Jefferson’s Monticello. He obtained a mortgage to pay for the remainder five miles from Charlottesville on a hilltop called Highland. He also handled the finances of his father-in-law [x]. His departure was set for the next morning, “we expect to imbark to morrow and to fall down the bay immediately.”
The Port of Baltimore was a bustling cove and shipping port along the shores and branches of the Patapsco River. In 1608, Captain John Smith traveled 170 miles from Jamestown to the upper Chesapeake Bay, leading the first European expedition to the Patapsco River, named after the native Algonquians who fished shellfish and hunted. English land grants 1661 were combined 1702 by James Carroll who named it Whetstone Point. The port was founded on the site in 1706 by the Maryland Colonial Assembly as a Port of Entry for the tobacco trade with England. In 1729 the point was incorporated into Baltimore Town. Starting in 1776 local citizenry erected earthworks named Fort Whetstone for port defense during the American Revolutionary War, which was replaced in 1798 by Fort McHenry.
Fells Point, first named Long Island Point in 1670, was the deepest point in the natural harbor, becoming the colony's main ship building center, with many shipyards. On the east side was Loudenschlager's Hill. Fells Point was incorporated into Baltimore Town in 1773. The Continental Navy ordered their first frigate, USS Virginia, from George Wells in Fells Point in 1775. The first ship named the USF Constellation were produced at the Harris Creek Shipyard here, and the third USS Enterprise at Henry Spencer's shipyard. Over 800 ships were commissioned from Fells Point shipyards from 1784 onward into the late 19th century.
The region at the head of the Patapsco River's Northwest Branch, in "The Basin", west of inlet a small island at the mouth of the "Jones Falls" stream and "Harford Run" further to the east, both of which flow from the north, and a small stream flowing from the west, later called "Uhler's Run". The waterfront had developed drydocks, warehouses, ship chandlers, as well as industry including mills were built behind the wharves. Further southeast of Baltimore and Fells Point along the Patapsco River, plantations were developed in the early 1800s for worker housing and industry. The main exports were tobacco and many farmers, merchants, mechanics, shipbuilders lived around the area. By 1790, a census was taken, the population was 13,503 people. The same year Monroe departed, it started its first fire insurance.
June 18th, there were fair winds [x] and James Monroe and along with his wife and seven and a half year old daughter Eliza boarded the ship Cincinnatus in Baltimore. With them were two white servants and Fulwar Skipwith (1765-1839). Fulwar was Thomas Jefferson’s nephew through his past marriage whom Monroe agreed to take along as a secretary of legation [x]. Cincinnatus was commanded by Joshua Barney (1759-1818) [x], an American Navy officer who served in the Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War later achieved the rank of commodore in the United States Navy and also serving in the War of 1812. Barney, being born and raised in Baltimore was experienced with the ports and those of the French coast.
On June 19th, the Cincinnatus had not yet left the “river” when George Washington arrived in the city expecting to “enclosed into your hands...on my way to this place; but you had left it in the morning of the day I got there.” as he informed America’s new Minister from his plantation at Mount Vernon. Despite George Washington’s apparent desire for a new U.S. minister to France, Gouverneur Morris remained at the post until August 1794, when James Monroe arrived as his replacement [x].
July 6th, Madison from Fredricksburg wrote to Joseph Jones that he had received a letter from James Monroe dated June 22nd, stating that although they had boarded the ship on the 18th, the crew was awaiting for fair winds and hence they were stuck like sitting-ducks in the harbor.
Aboard the Cincinnatus, the Monroes most likely had their own cabin below deck that they all shared and passed time by reading and reviewing French, playing cards, chess, checkers and dominoes. The father often read poetry to his daughter while Elizabeth was teaching her basic necessitates like to sew, knit and draw. Elizabeth was also a charming artist who drew pictures of her family [x]. The sea was still rocking a good deal to where while Elizabeth and Eliza escaped sea-sickness, Monroe faced it for several hours and Joseph Jones “Joe” for several days and complained a little of ailment but “did not decline his dinner.” [x]. The trip proved much shorter than many only forty-five days at sea. The passage was free from storms [x] and “between the soundings of each coast short, being only [twenty-nine] days” and the family arrived in the French port of Le Havre on August 3rd, 1794 due to tailwinds that pushed them through the Atlantic Ocean. All the way serving in London as Ambassador to England, John Jay wrote to Edmund Randolph that he “heard yesterday that Mr Monroe had arrived at Paris.” on August 22nd.
Only days before his arrival, Robespierre and his followers were executed by guillotine.

Supporting COVID-19 Relief Efforts in Our Communities
Supporting COVID-19 relief efforts in our communities
It’s providing homeless services organizations in California with emergency response supplies to diagnose and prevent the spread of COVID‑19. It’s helping centers in Idaho that are providing child care for first responders, health care workers, and essential workers, to stay open. And it’s supporting nursing students in Texas so they can graduate on time and enter the workforce sooner, where they are desperately needed.
Last month, Wells Fargo announced it was redirecting $175 million to COVID‑19 community relief efforts, and since then, the company has worked to streamline grant making and offer highly flexible funding to nearly 1,000 nonprofits reaching more than 800 communities. Strong collaboration between Corporate Philanthropy and Community Relations and Government Relations has also helped Wells Fargo contribute to dozens of state and local COVID‑19 relief funds. On April 5, Wells Fargo announced it will donate fees generated through the Paycheck Protection Program as charitable grants to nonprofits that support small businesses.
“This has been an unprecedented pandemic with effects that no one could have predicted,” said Jimmie Paschall, interim president of the Wells Fargo Foundation. “Wells Fargo is fortunate to be in a position where we can use our resources to help bring relief to our communities, many who quickly deployed relief funds. These grants will help communities respond to nonprofits, small businesses, and people they serve who are losing money, struggling to provide for others, seeing an increased demand for services, and facing other challenges as a result of COVID‑19. We hope to help them keep their doors open, retain staff, and provide services to the people that rely on them most.”
The following are some of the ways Wells Fargo’s support is helping to provide relief in the U.S. and around the world:
International: A $10,000 grant is supporting Anxiety Canada in Vancouver to provide funds to help cover COVID‑19-related services and programs. Anxiety Canada provides free online, self-help, and evidence-based resources on anxiety including the MindShift™ CBT app, which is designed to help Canadians manage anxiety. The charity provides free online courses to help people relax and be mindful, develop more effective ways of thinking, and use active steps to take charge of anxiety.
A $40,000 grant to the Guy’s and St. Thomas’ National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust in London is helping the organization’s medics and support staff with travel, accommodations, food, training, and other needs. The organization is based in the Southwark borough, one of the most affected areas of the COVID‑19 pandemic.
National: A $1 million grant to the Opportunity Fund, which is headquartered in San Jose, California, kicked off a $50 million small business relief fund for vulnerable small businesses across the U.S. that are affected by COVID‑19. The Opportunity Fund has already deferred payments for 700 small businesses and will continue to lend capital and offer technical assistance as the fund continues to grow. In particular, this fund helps small businesses owned by people of color, immigrants, and women.
Alabama: A $100,000 grant to the Birmingham Strong Fund is providing emergency loans to small businesses to help stabilize employment, stimulate economic vitality, and offset losses related to COVID‑19. The fund, led by the mayor of Birmingham, offers loans ranging from $10,000 to $25,000 with zero interest for 180 days. The loans are meant to help limit reductions in payroll or staff size, maintain business operations, or fund a business model reconfiguration in response to COVID‑19.
California: A $150,000 grant to the city and county of San Francisco is supporting its Give2SF Fund, which can be spent on various city efforts to respond to the novel coronavirus outbreak and support residents. This includes providing shelter, food, and other types of assistance to help individuals across the city, as well as assistance to small businesses impacted by the outbreak in the form of zero-interest loans with flexible repayment schedules and terms. This emergency loan fund will expand access to cash for small businesses who may have difficulty accessing more traditional loan products and help sustain them through the ongoing public health crisis.
A $150,000 grant to LA Family Housing in North Hollywood is providing free meals for low-income families. The nonprofit houses up to 500 families on any given night in its interim, or bridge, housing, which currently consists of motels and large single-family homes. Under normal circumstances, food insecurity is a critical area of concern for these families — and it’s even more of an issue with the recent closure of the Los Angeles Unified School District, which provides critical meal services for children in schools. The Wells Fargo grant will cover the cost of daily meals for families over the next four weeks. LA Family Housing will provide one hot meal per day for each family member served in the various motels and interim family sites operated by the organization.
A $100,000 grant to United Way of Greater Los Angeles has helped the group create the Pandemic Relief Fund to support vulnerable populations who are at the greatest risk of health and economic impacts in this crisis. Los Angeles has 60,000 individuals experiencing homelessness each night, and preventing the spread and diagnosing COVID‑19 within this population is extremely challenging. Through the Wells Fargo grant, the Relief Fund will provide homeless services organizations with emergency response supplies, including additional food, face masks, hand sanitizer, and infrared thermometers to help keep this population protected.
A $100,000 grant to the Long Beach Economic Partnership helps provide at least 200 small businesses with mini grants of $500 and enhance their eligibility for the City Loan Program.
Colorado: A $150,000 grant to the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless in Denver is providing respite beds for individuals awaiting COVID‑19 tests and for those sick with mild to moderate symptoms. Working with the county, the city of Denver purchased the Western Motor Inn, and the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless has put in place a master lease to use the site. The city and county are working to identify other motels that can be available for master leasing by the Coalition. The city ultimately hopes to secure 800 – 1,000 additional motel units to respond to the emergency.
Florida: A $50,000 grant to the Tampa Bay Resiliency Fund will help provide grants to qualified charitable nonprofit organizations in support of local efforts to address community problems created by and in response to COVID‑19. The fund is administered by the Pinellas Community Foundation and is a strategic collaboration with the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg, Allegany Franciscan Ministries, Pinellas Community Foundation, United Way of Citrus County, United Way of Hernando County, United Way of Pasco County, and United Way Suncoast.
Georgia: A $250,000 grant to the Greater Atlanta COVID‑19 Response and Recovery Fund is supporting those most vulnerable to the economic and health-related impacts caused by the pandemic. The fund was organized by United Way of Greater Atlanta and the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. Wells Fargo is among the first corporate foundations supporting this fund.
Idaho: A $100,000 seed grant has helped Home Partnership Foundation in Boise create the Idaho Housing Rapid Response Fund, helping with rental assistance, immediate shelter, and transitional housing. The grant provided initial seed money, and with additional donors, the fund has now grown to more than $250,000.
A $20,000 seed grant to Idaho Association for the Education of Young Children in Boise has helped the group create the Idaho Child Care Provider Fund in response to the emergency small business needs of child care providers across the state who are caring for children of first responders, health care workers, and essential workers. Without this emergency fund, many of these child care centers — especially those already located near “child care deserts” in more rural committees — would not be able to remain open during this time when essential workers need to remain employed, healthy, and safe.
Iowa: A $150,000 grant to the Institute of Community Alliances is providing rental assistance to shelter residents across the state of Iowa. At the time of the award, 1,158 Iowans resided in shelters. The need to reduce the risk of COVID‑19 among shelters was great, and Wells Fargo responded with this grant with the hope that it would pay for first month rent for as much as 10% of the state’s sheltered residents. This was the first-ever statewide rental assistance fund, and the local foundation provided an additional $10,000 for a Landlord Mitigation Fund. In addition to this $150,000 grant, the local Wells Fargo Foundation contributed $125,000 for small business assistance and $100,000 to disaster funds across the state. The total COVID-related giving is $410,000.
Massachutes: A $250,000 grant to NeighborWorks Housing Solutions in Quincy is primarily supporting the Residential Assistance to Families in Transition program, which provides short-term emergency financial assistance for families and individuals to stabilize their situations by assisting with mortgage payments, rent, utility bills, and costs for other basic needs. The organization administers this program on behalf of the state for more than 60 towns and cities, and the grant from Wells Fargo will help augment it. The program is now targeting households facing instability as a result of a COVID‑19-related housing crisis due to loss of wages or increase in expenses. Funds are also providing emergency food support to individuals and families living in NeighborWorks Housing Solutions’ affordable rental properties, including housing for domestic violence survivors, senior citizens, and adults with disabilities.
New Mexico: A $50,000 grant is supporting the Emergency Action Fund for New Mexico, which was set up by the Albuquerque Community Foundation and United Way of Central New Mexico so nonprofits could receive emergency funds in response to COVID‑19. The funds being released are providing emergency support to various nonprofits in New Mexico, primarily supporting food for seniors, care for transgender citizens, and other needs for vulnerable populations.
North Carolina: A $150,000 grant to Common Wealth Charlotte is supporting the group’s trauma-informed financial capability and wealth building programs. Before the COVID‑19 pandemic, the majority of the nonprofit’s clients rarely made ends meet, due to limited work hours and high housing, transportation, and child care costs. The nonprofit has established a COVID‑19 financial questions virtual/text system for low-income wage earners with concerns about current or impending financial hardship due to loss of income from job cessation, voluntary or mandatory quarantines, or other hardships caused by COVID‑19. Advanced financial education and loan administration teams and trained volunteers will respond with a phone call or text to address questions about paying rent, feeding families, and other related questions. The team will offer relevant guidance and make referrals to other appropriate agencies, as necessary.
A $50,000 grant to Thread Capital in Raleigh is supporting operations for the COVID‑19 Rapid Recovery Loan program for small businesses and farms. To preserve businesses and save hard-won jobs, Thread Capital has activated its low- and zero-interest disaster recovery loan product to address this unprecedented crisis. This loan product helps businesses bridge the gap between when crisis strikes and when federal loans and other relief funds are approved.
Texas: A $50,000 grant to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso is providing a safety net for nursing students in the Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing who are facing financial challenges and unforeseen circumstances due to the COVID‑19 pandemic. The goal of the fund is to keep students on track to graduate in May or December, allowing them to achieve their dreams and enter the workforce, where they are desperately needed.
Virginia: An $8,000 grant to the COVID‑19 Harrisonburg-Rockingham Small Business Resilience Grant fund in Shenandoah Valley is helping 200 rural business impacted by COVID‑19. This emergency grant fund will be used to support small businesses that need immediate help to ensure ongoing operations, retain employees, and keep this sector of the community’s economy moving.
Wisconsin: A $20,000 grant to Couleecap, Inc. in Westby is providing critical bill payment assistance for small business owners and their workers within the Coulee Region. The goal is to offer support to small businesses whose employees are struggling with payroll assistance for sick and medical leave and the cost of rent. Small businesses’ most emergent needs will be determined, and awards will be given for critical needs. All participants will be referred to government programs, and they will receive information on emergency and unemployment budgeting to help them determine how other public resources can be used to free up cash for critical bills.

Endeavor Real Estate Group and MetLife Investment Management Break Ground on New Mixed-Use Tower
Endeavor Real Estate Group and joint venture partner MetLife Investment Management (MIM), MetLife Inc.’s MET, -3.31% institutional asset management business, have broken ground on a 30-story mixed-use tower in the Rainey Street District.
The Quincy will include:
Ground-level retail with separate, dedicated residential and office lobbies. The retail space totals approximately 10,360 square feet and includes one level of below-grade parking. Seven floors of above-grade parking, including an office parking ratio of up to three spaces per 1,000 square feet. Three floors of Class A office space, totaling approximately 77,540 square feet. Features include outdoor terraces with lake views, secured bike storage, a dedicated ground floor lobby separate from the residential tower, and showers on every floor. 19 floors of residential units, with a total of 347 apartment homes for lease. Resort-style amenities designed to take full advantage of the outdoors, including: a lush terrace complete with a pool, firepit, cabanas, observation deck and an exercise lawn. Coupled with a 30th floor indoor/outdoor sky deck overlooking Lady Bird Lake, there will be a dog grooming spa, sports lounge, media room, large co-working space and business center, ample package lockers, as well as a lounge to serve as a waiting area for transportation networking companies like Uber and Lyft.
The Quincy is anticipated to open in the first quarter of 2021, with market analysts noting that the tower will be the first in the Rainey Street district to combine retail, office and residential uses all in one building within that district. The entire building will merit two stars from the Austin Energy Green Building rating system.
“The Rainey Street District has evolved into a thriving, organic, walkable neighborhood full of unique bars, restaurants, hotels and housing adjacent to Lady Bird Lake on the hike and bike trail. The Quincy will weave nicely into the fabric of the neighborhood and establish a new front door to the district,” said Jamil Alam, managing principal for Endeavor.
Kurt Day, managing director, Real Estate, MetLife Investment Management said: “Since first investing in the downtown Austin market more than 30 years ago, we have continued to see the city evolve into an attractive convergence market. This partnership opportunity with Endeavor on The Quincy pulls together many of our favorite traits about mixed-use developments, and we are excited about contributing to the evolution of the Rainey Street district.”
The Quincy’s site on Red River Street is bounded by Driskill Street to the north and Davis Street to the south, where two parking lots presently reside. Nearby, a new Whole Foods Market is slated for Saltillo, another Endeavor project, located between 4th and 5th Streets, along IH-35. Even closer are the Austin Convention Center and two major hotels, Hotel Van Zandt and Fairmont Austin. Some of the region’s hottest restaurants, like El Naranjo, Emmer & Rye, and Iron Works Barbecue, are a short walk away. Additionally, the site offers immediate access to Lady Bird Lake – along with its renown Ann and Roy Butler Hike & Bike Trail.
Ziegler Cooper Architects designed the 360-foot-tall tower, while Kimley Horn is serving as the project’s engineer, Brockette Drake Davis is acting as the structural engineer and Blum Consulting Engineers is acting as the MEP engineer. IBC Bank is the lender on the project and Rogers-O’Brien Construction Company Ltd. has been brought on to serve as general contractor. Endeavor will handle retail and office leasing for the project.
