Up to date with the trends, if you don’t mind!
Tumblr media
As opposed to some people, I'm not of the opinion that Dick Grayson is a fashion disaster. I don't imagine I will convince anyone who loves to portray him as the eternal looser... But the thing with fashion is that a lot of it quickly gets dated. Since artists have drawn Dick in contemporary style for decades, it's bound to happen that some outfits get past their best before date.
Tumblr media
If we're to put the blame where it belongs, it has to be Greg Land, who drew Dick in a multicoloured polka dot shirt in Nightwing vol 1 # 2. That's the outfit most people reference when they claim that Dick dresses outlandishly. However, in the 90s, polka dot shirts (and long hair on men) were trendy – which is something that we tend to forget some decades later, when another era of fashion surrounds us.
Tumblr media
The original Nightwing suit from 1984 also gets a fair amount of flak. Certain artists, like Jim Aparo, drew the collar ridiculously high, unlike how it looked with George Pérez’ art. But on the whole, it's not in a completely different style from other superhero suits that were introduced in the 70s and 80s. High collars and deep v-necks were popular.
Tales of the Teen Titans # 44, Batman vol 1 # 441.
Tumblr media
Tyroc (1976); Black Lightning (1977); Dazzler (1980); Jericho (1984).
Tumblr media
Gladiator (1977), Black Cat (1979), Atari Force (1982), Mockingbird (1980), Booster Gold (1986).
Fashion at the time was about crossovers and breaking rules, and using fabrics such as rubber and vinyl. And disco...  Here are some pictures from the 70s and 80s, to remind ourselves what it looked like at the time.
Tumblr media
I guess some people might point the finger at the original Robin suit, too? But, seriously, it's a 1940s child superhero costume, designed at a time when the printing process favoured bright primary colours. (Besides, in a fair number of versions, Bruce is the one who designed the Robin suit. Now, if we want to talk ridiculous – take a look at Bob Kane's original sketch of the Bat-Man.)
Without further ado. Let's have a look at some of Dick's outfits over the years, and see what was considered stylish at the time, shall we.
Tumblr media
Dick in civilan garbs in the 1940s and 1950s. The boy's fashion at the time included knitted pullovers and sweaters which were also worn over shirt and tie. Bright solid or patterned sportcoats were worn with dress-shirt and necktie or bowtie. (Knickers, that is short trousers, were, by the way, children's fashion in the 1940s.)
Pictures are fashion illustrations from the 40s and 50s and from Batman # 13 (1942). Star Spangled Comics # 65 (1947), # 75 (1947), # 98 (1949), # 111 (1950).
Tumblr media
College teenager Dick in the 1970s dressed in sweaters, vests, long collared shirts. His hair was side-parted. And, you guessed it – vests, long collared shirts and turtleneck sweaters were essential fashion items of the 1970s. Dick-pics from: Batman # 248 (1973). Batman Family # 8 (1976). Detective Comics # 483 (1979). Detective Comics  # 495 (1980).
Tumblr media
Dick in a green three piece suit in New Teen Titans Vol 1 # 26 (1982). Picture in Sears Fashion Catalogue 1981. 1980s vintage tweed suit.
Tumblr media
Leather jacket, t-shirts and sweaters and jeans were trendy in the 1980s. In Tales of the teen titans 43 (1984), Dick wears jeans and an expensive leather jacket.
Tumblr media
"That" outfit in Nightwing vol 1 # 2 (1995). "Seinfeld" from 1991.
Tumblr media
Overalls were huge in the 1990s, even when you weren't custom building your own car. Nightwing vol 2 # 16 (1998), and fashion photos from the 1990s.
Tumblr media
In the early 2000s, casual clothing was a big trend. Rugby shirts was a common look, and the leather jacket was still popular. Batman: Gotham Knights # 21 (2001), # 45 (2003), Nightwing vol 2 # 49 (2000), #77 (2003), # 80 (2003).
Tumblr media
In the mid-2000s, some trendy things were: Casual, fitted shirt. Casual blazer. Cardigan. V-neck t-shirt. Trucker hat. Tank top. Nightwing vol 2 # 133 (2007), # 141 and # 144 (2008). Fashion photos from 2008, design Diesel, Tony Melillo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In The New 52 and Rebirth, Dick has mostly dressed casually (unless it's for a funeral, of course). Jeans, t-shirts, shirt without tie, sweaters, hoodie, parka, blazer or leather jacket. Often layer on layer - sweater over shirt, shirt on top of t-shirt...  The 2010s wasn't long ago, and it's not easy to sort through fashion shows and micro-trends and see a bigger picture just yet... But a few of the things that were trendy at least at some time during the 2010s were: the colour grey; one-button suits and blazers; striped sweater; checkered shirt; fitted leather jackets; parka; pastel colours; angular v-neck.
Nightwing vol 3 # 5 (2012), # 6 (2012), # 10 (2012), # 17 (2013),  # 27 (2014). Nightwing vol 4 # 10 (2017), # 15 (2017). Assorted fashion photos from 2012–2017.
Tumblr media
Today it's 2020, and when it comes to men's hairstyles, crew cut is popular. Nightwing vol 4 # 63, and photo from TheTrendSpotter's post 40 Best Short Hairstyles for Men in 2020.
Tumblr media
And hey, superhero apparel were on the catwalk in the 2010s, too. How more fashion forward can Dick Grayson become...? Misel Saban, June 27, 2014 (Batman) and Sarah Dos Santos, December 16, 2013 (Superman); Kyle Towers, February 2, 2013 (Spiderman).
However, I don't see Dick (written) as interested in keeping up with the fashion. But he did live his first years in a small trailer. And since then, he's been accustomed to a life where you never know when your home is going to be obliterated, or your foster father will kick you out. Or when you have to rush away to follow a lead in another city or save the world somewhere. Or the next time you'll be shot and forget that you have a flat to live in... He’s bound to have learned not to have an excessive amount of clothes.
Tumblr media
When he does need to buy something, because his last outfit went up in smoke or something, he'll simply pick from what's in the front inside the shops. Hence, he'll often be dressed up-to-date. New Titans # 76, New Titans # 86, Nightwing vol 2 # 89, Nightwing vol 2 # 20, Nigtwing vol 3 # 19, Nightwing vol 4 # 50 , Robin Year One # 3.
Top pictures from: Batman # 237 (1971), New Teen Titans # 16 (1982), Nightwing vol 2 # 129 (2007), Nightwing vol 4 # 10 (2016).

“It’s pod people, Susie… and it’s too late to run!”
Plunger have looked on the 1950s with the same low regard people used to have for the 70s (…then the 80s, and probably the 90s now) - the fashions, hairstyles, cars and particularly the music got short shrift at Plunger Towers. So the last time we heard any 50s music was probably on a Saturday morning screening of Teenagers From Outer Space or similar. Which may seem a bit irrelevant in a concert review of the delectable Whitney Rose but bear with us, there is a point to it all.
Whitney’s last two albums (2017’s Rule 62 and her most recent, We Still Go To Rodeos) take an eclectic run at country, mixing in 60s Stax soul, 70s West Coast, and even some 80s garage band flavours, and indeed these were all on display last time Plunger saw Whitney at The Lexington. Her show at The Water Rats had a much more straight-down-the-line 50s country feel, heightened by the three-piece band backing her: looking and sounding like a Texan dive houseband from a Rockford Files or Magnum P.I., Noel McKay guitar, Brad Fordham bass and Lisa Pankratz drums (and fantastic harmony and backing vocals on occasion from one, two or all three) added a down home urgency and swing to much of the proceedings, including the doo-wop post-break-up ballad of Better To My Baby, Wake Me In Wyoming’s walking-horse-paced cowboy country and the Tex-Mex-spiced 'song about songs’ Three-Minute Love Affair, all featuring great lower register twang from Noel’s guitar and heartbreaking harmony vocals.
Ever-busy drums and a melodic chordal solo lent a Nashville gloss to the mellow Gram/Ronstadt mood of Believe Me, Angela contrasting nicely with the head-bobbing groove and elastic guitar hook of The Devil Borrowed My Boots, with its midbreak switch to a near-disco 4/4 and fantastic swooping three-part vocals (particularly the a cappella close!) while You Don’t Scare Me set a plaintive bobby sox chorus against a slinky latinate shimmer verse with cymbal and tom-rich drumming, fluid bass and a neat bass and guitar unison finale, and there were more Borderland touches in the bustling country two-step Arizona. Peak “country with a capital C” came (suitably modernised) in I Don’t Want Half (I Just Want Out) a divorce song that’s musically the heir to Tammy Wynette but light years apart in spirit, delivered with playful vitriol over an echt Nashville bounce and sweet harmonies; and in the tight shit-kicking beat and R’n’R sevenths of Time To Cry, with Whitney’s high Tennessee twang reaching a stirring top range plus two very Scotty Mooreish outings for Noel.
Noel’s own Open All Night was one of a handful of covers, again delivered on the night with a more muscular roadhouse edge than on record- a low-down Eddie Cochran groove with killer harmonies and a fine lead vocal from Noel himself. Other covers were Brennen Leigh’s relaxed dreamy longing-for-pre-digital-times, Analog, with Whitney doing her best teen starlet croon, while her honeyed delivery was perfect for a heartfelt Linda-style take on Tom Petty’s Walls (Circus), but there was plenty of oomph in her go-to party piece Lesley Gore’s You Don’t Own Me (dedicated to Pride week), building from sulky teen recalcitrance up through the key changes to an impassioned belt.
Unsurprisingly with the enforced lag between We Still Go To Rodeos release and being able to tour it, there is already another album in the pipeline (what else are you going to do in lockdown?) and we heard three songs from it: sadly unintroduced, they included a bouncy Blanket On The Ground-ish lope with chicken-picking guitar (possibly I Built My Own Jail) a line-dancing two-step (You’ll Get Along?) and a Nancy Sinatra-meets-Burt Bacharach easy-listening number.
A couple of songs from We Still Go To Rodeos broke the 50s spell, retaining their album character: Better Man’s twist-a-go-go beat and surftastic guitar burst nudged us into 60s territory and the thrashy garage band teen rebellion angst of In A Rut kept us there, with its tom-heavy beat, wild flaring solo and shout along chorus, ending the set.
After a brief hiatus (“I had a very important glass of orange juice to attend to… I wish I was cooler and that was a lie”) we were treated to the highly appropriate stay-true-to-your-country-heritage anthem My Boots, and a rollicking closing encore of the Everly’s When Will I Be Loved (à la Linda Ronstadt’s version) to close a cracking night of sweet and sweaty country goodness.
And the pod people? Yep, they caught Plunger bopping at the hop: we’re fully assimilated now and loving every chrome tail-finned, boot-lace tied, yee-haw minute…

KEY WEST ON A SATURDAY NIGHT
KEY WEST ON A SATURDAY NIGHT - https://keywestlou.com/key-west-on-a-saturday-night-3/Originally posted July 2017   For me, last night was unique. I hit more downtown/Duval spots that normal. Did it all between 5 and 10. Actually, I was at the corner of Sloppy Joe’s at 1. A quick down and back. I did not want to miss the Running of the Bulls. One of Hemingway Days’ finest events. Stayed all of 15 minutes before returning home. My evening began with Tammy and a manicure. Tammy just returned from a one month trip to Vietnam tuesday afternoon. The jet lag was not bothering her as she did my nails. Tammy looked outstanding! The trip definitely changed her appearance. She got the works so to speak in Vietnam. Magnificent eyebrows. Tattooed. Did not look tattooed at all. Thick. Beautiful. Tammy said they will fade over a period of six months. Only $50 in Vietnam. Her eyes done differently, also. Bright! Her skin a golden tan. Her family lives near a beach. She spent many days at the beach. Changed her hairstyle and color, also. Difficult for me to describe. Simply stated, Tammy returned a movie star! Then to Don’s Place. Had a drink with Jimmy. Jimmy will be painting the inside of my new home in about two weeks. Boomer bartending. Had not seen Boomer in a while. Followed up Don’s Place with the Chart Room. John bartending. Saturday not his usual night. He was filling in for Shawn. Fellow sitting next to me from Oklahoma. Thirty six. In the commercial air conditioning business. Would prefer Key West and many retails. Big commercial jobs have big bills. However they have to go through accounting, etc. for approval and it takes him forever to be paid. First time in Key West for he and his 26 year old wife. They have traveled Caribbean and Asian waters. Warm spots. Key West the best. He plans on returning soon. Another couple could not stop talking about the Garden of Eden. Their favorite spot. Wish it were mine. I have not been there in 10 years. The two times I went, the only bare body parts I saw were the bare breasts of the female bartender. I have to give it another shot. The couple claimed full body parts now available for observation. Three couples came in. Ordered shots. Patron Tequila and Cafe. Patron topped with Bailey’s Irish Cream. Looked good. John said it was also known as a Body Guinness. Because the drink looked like a miniature Guinness beer. Decided to walk Duval. A Caribbean Street Festival going big time. The street jammed. Increases the temperature by 20 degrees. A bit uncomfortable when the 20 degrees is added to heavy humidity. During the Festival walk decided stopped at The Porch. On Caroline, just off Duval. Another place I had not visited in years. When I last visited, people sat on the huge front porch and drank. Not last night. Things have changed. You can drink on the porch. However, it appeared most preferred inside. The inside different. As you walked in the front door of this lovely old mansion, there were signs on either side of you. The sign to the left indicating the room to the left for beer drinkers. The sign to the right indicating liquor and spirit drinkers. I went to the right and enjoyed a gin. Both rooms packed. I have heard a lot recently about a relatively new place on Caroline. Across from the Tropic Cinema. The Saint. The Saint it was. Looks like a guest house from the outside. With a fire engine red carpet running to the front door. The inside blew me out! The newest smartest place in Key West. Smart being the operative word. A long bar. Tons of people. The people as smart appearing as the room. Customers primarily in the 30’s to 40’s range. Something about their clothes. Key West remains a tee shirt/sport shirt/shorts town. These people were dressed appropriately, but a step up. I don’t know how tee shirts and shorts can look smart, but they did. The people and their attire went well together. The Saint definitely will be added to one of those places I frequently attend. Loved it! It was time to eat. Tavern ‘n Town the choice. The 9 o’clock happy hour. Fried calamari and a couple of drinks. Read the newspapers. Enjoyed Bobby Nesbitt. Followed by a new singer. Nick Hagelin. Plays the guitar and sings. Outstanding! Diners cheered and clapped loudly each time he finished a tune. Only appearing at Tavern ‘n Town one night. Hope he returns. Was home and in bed at 10. A busy evening. All fun! I did a change of pace video on Facebook yesterday. Talked about my grandfather and his immigration to the U.S. in 1906. An excellent piece. Said with humility. My grandfather was a unique person and it was a joy to write about him. I plan on doing a follow up today re my grandfather. He never knew his parents. Born a bastard. The video will tell the story of how he got his last name (and now mine) of Petrone. Take a look. Both videos interesting. The video is Key West Lou Live on Facebook. Enjoy your Sunday!

Lesson 15, Task 4: What do I believe in?
Social status for more unfortunate students will no longer be an issue. When all the students wear the same style of clothing, then there will be the same kind of atmosphere across the school campus. This pattern encourages the student to concentrate more on their academic and co-curricular activities since the visual differences in social-economic grading are very less (Wilder, 2007). A uniform means students don’t have to worry about peer pressure when it comes to their clothes. There is no competition about being dressed in the latest fashions trend, which would put a great deal of pressure, financially on students and parents. Potential bullies have one less target for their insults, because it’s quite hard to insult someone who is dressed identically like you. It also prepares students to dress properly for different places. Inappropriate clothing can be distracting to fellow students who are trying to concentrate. Short skirts, skimpy tops, and low pants are fine for after school, but not for the classroom. Students should express themselves through art or creative writing, not clothing. With fewer distractions, students can concentrate on getting a good education which can help them later on. Lastly with all the peer pressure in school, many students worry about fitting in. If a dress code (or even uniforms) were required, there would be less emphasis on how you look, and more emphasis on learning. Proven to increase student achievement by encouraging students to concentrate more on their studies and less on their wardrobe. A de-emphasis on clothing can also save money, as there will be less pressure to keep up with expensive trends and fashions. Many students are forced to wear uniforms, is this restriction really too much for them?
The main argument against uniforms is that young people are unable to express their individuality through the clothes they wear, but students with uniforms will be able to express themselves in the same way as students without uniforms do and could still express their individuality while wearing school uniforms. Students with uniforms can wear jewelry, makeup, wear scarves, funky hairstyles, colorful socks, and the trend in 2020, is creative homemade face masks (Sethi, 2016). When students don't wear school uniforms it can be easy to spot kids with the most at least privilege based on what they wear to school. Uniforms erase that issue and eliminate makers between the rich and poor, which has led to more social mixing along economic lines (American Preparatory, 2017). Often parents can’t afford the latest clothes and unfortunately students are at fault, and are bullied because of their attire. With this issue, students will not have the proper frame of mind for learning and studying  (Nicky, 2020). School uniforms means less money spent on expensive jogger suits, designer shirts and pants at school, distinguishing students by their economic class (Nicky, 2020). When students have similar expectations for the way needed to be dressed, unhealthy competitive feelings about looks are significantly reduced. Students can stand out because of their character and not their clothes (American Preparatory, 2017). When uniforms are mandatory, parents and students do not have to worry about choosing an appropriate outfit for the school day. According to a national survey, over 90% of US school leaders believe that school uniforms and dress code policies “eliminate wardrobe battles with kids,” make it “easier to get kids ready in the morning,” and create a “time saving in the morning” (Britannica, 2020). Students do have opportunities to wear what they wish on dress down days, but even then, there remains a strict dress code. The “the students’ behavior is always more energized on dress down days, and they always seem to be a bit more distracted on those days”, said Raineria (Catholic Sentinel, 2004). Behavior plays a huge role in what’s being worn or not worn (Catholic Sentinel, 2004). Students may or may not agree with the use of uniforms because they're not as “cool” as other modern fashions.
However the majority of schools and teachers, say school uniforms positively impact their students learning because non- uniform clothing can be a huge distraction. For some students seeing others wearing Nike and Uggs might mean more friends, having a better school experience, and less bullying. Those less fortunate people who can’t afford brand names will have to deal with discrimination for their clothing.  Uniforms provide for less distraction, less drama, and more of a focus on learning. Its purpose is to ensure that students are not distracted from learning and their other responsibilities. (Sethi, 2016). Distraction is more pointed towards females, not saying it's only females causing these distractions, but some apparels can be very eye-catching to others and or teachers (Kumba, 2016).  Males are completely to blame due to the fact that they are unable to focus long enough to pay attention in class for an hour and half at a time without their ravenous masculine urges taking over (Kumba, 2016). Another reason dress codes are accommodated in schools is because of all the shiny, sparking bright designs on some students' clothes. Students' clothes are extremely distracting, causing other students to catch attention (Kumba, 2016). The amazing things printed on clothing are an eye catcher, causing students and or teachers to stare and ask questions about others' sense of fashions. Dress codes can be helpful to keep students from spending hours trying to get ready for school in the morning because they are worried and insecure of what they have on (Kumba, 2016). I know many people may disagree that clothing can be distracting. Yes it depends on if you pay attention to what other people say and their opinions. School does not happen all day, therefore you are free to wear whatever you want after school. Students should understand that school is for learning and you need to use all the time you can get in order to learn something new everyday.
Eventually at some point in your life you will have to wear some type of uniform, whether it is for school or work. A 2015 study, across 39 countries, showed that wearing uniforms in school helped students behave (Bilton, 2018). Students in their own clothes performed better academically than students in uniforms, yet behavior and attendance were not affected either way (Bilton, 2018). In order to educate a large number of students it requires a high standard of discipline. A strong uniform policy, successfully adhered to and proved the first opportunity to praise and support students. It ideally sets the standard for successful behavior for learning in a school environment (Bilton, 2018). Most schools which implement uniform or dress codes tend to be very strict about it. In the UK it is common for children to be punished for your uniform because it is incorrect. In extreme cases, students even miss school after facing suspensions for inadequate uniforms. In 2016, a UK secondary school turned down 50 students one morning because they were unable to meet uniform requirements (Bilton, 2018). Students often feel frustrated that the way they present themselves can seem more important than their attendance and willingness to learn. According to school reported statistics and the School Administrator, the mandatory uniform on campuses has reduce skipped classes, suspensions, and discipline referrals among students  (Chen, 2020).  In addition, athletic team uniforms, proponents argue that dressing cohesively increases pride, unity, a sense of belonging and commitment to the school. With uniforms a more professional tone is set in school, encouraging students to take their studies more seriously and it making it their priority (Chen, 2020).
School uniforms are a key way of developing a sense of togetherness among students and staff. When students all wear the same clothing every day at school, it levels out the playing field. Any expectations on what to wear are removed and children develop a greater sense of equality. Children of all socioeconomic backgrounds behind from the same starting point. Without uniforms, children from poorer backgrounds could feel isolated and if their parents are unable to afford the latest styles of clothing. This helps promote the idea that we are all the same. If a child feels like they don't fit in, or they have the latest and best clothing, it can be damaging to their confidence. A lack of confidence can be one of the biggest barriers to academic growth and success. Introducing a school uniform removes this possibility, meaning your child has less to worry about and more reasons to be confident and an active participant in class.

Join Taja Lindley on an Artist Talk and Film Screening!
Can we grow gardens out of graves? How can we recycle the energy of protest, rage and grief into creating a world where indeed Black Lives Matter? What is the role of memory in our movement building work? And who will be responsible for this labor? These are the questions that haunt the work of visual and performance artist Taja Lindley.
As a memory worker, Lindley explores what has been abandoned, erased, silenced or distorted in our individual and collective consciousness. During her artist talk, she will screen her short film “This Ain’t A Eulogy: A Ritual for Re-Membering” and will discuss her most recent projects: “The Bag Lady Manifesta” and the "Birth Justice Podcast NYC." There will be time for community conversation and Q&A.
Through iterative and interdisciplinary practices, Taja Lindley creates socially engaged artwork that transforms audiences, shifts culture, and moves people to action. Since 2014 she has developed a body of work recycling and repurposing discarded materials. Her 2017 residency at Dixon Place Theater culminated in the world premiere of her one-woman show "The Bag Lady Manifesta" and it has been presented at museums, theaters, and universities nationwide. Her films and installations have been featured at Brooklyn Museum; the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma; the Carver Museum in Austin, Texas; the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, California; and more.
In addition to being an artist, Lindley is actively engaged in social movements as a writer, consultant, and facilitator. For over a decade she has worked with non-profits, research institutes and government on policies and programming that impact women and girls, communities of color, low/no/fixed-income families, queer people, youth, and immigrants. Most recently, she served as a Sexual and Reproductive Justice Consultant at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, co-facilitating a community driven process that created The New York City Standards for Respectful Care at Birth. She is a 2019 NYC Public Artist in Residence and a 2020 A Blade of Grass Fellow. TajaLindley.com

Brother(hood) Dance!
January 30th - 5:00pm-6:00pm
https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUocOqvrTMuEtaEM6QX8kLd9ItaiUregeQP
Brother(hood) Dance! will offer a movement experience that engages your full sense of awareness and connectedness to past present and future. We will work through African Diasporic techniques to ground and be rooted.
Brother(hood) Dance! is an interdisciplinary duo that seeks to inform its audiences on the socio-political and environmental injustices from a global perspective, bringing clarity to the same-gender-loving African-American experience in the 21st century.  Brother(hood) Dance! was formed in April 2014 as a duo that research, create and perform dances of freedom by Orlando Zane Hunter, Jr. and Ricarrdo Valentine.  We have performed our works at FiveMyles, Center for Performance Research, B.A.A.D! (Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance), VCU-The Grace Street Theater, DraftWork at St. Marks Church, JACK, Movement Research at Judson Church, Colby College, Denmark Arts Center and other venues.
As a collective, our work demonstrates how life extends beyond its own subjective limits and often tells a story about the effects of global cultural interaction over the latter half of the twentieth century. It challenges the binaries we continually reconstruct between Self and Other, between our own ‘cannibal’ and ‘civilized’ selves. By rejecting an objective truth and global cultural narratives, we find that movement reveals an inherent awkwardness, a humor that echoes our own vulnerabilities. Brother(hood) Dance! considers movement as a metaphor for the ever-seeking man who experiences a continuous loss. Brother(hood) Dance!'s work urge us to renegotiate performance as being part of a reactive or – at times – autistic medium, commenting on oppressing themes in our contemporary society.

Dick Grayson – 80 years of hairstyles
Tumblr media
Welcome to my ongoing TED talk about Dick Grayson. This week I’ll be talking about hairstyles. Just because fashion in hairstyles is kind of fun.
The general hairstyle during the 1940s was short on the sides and back, longer on the top. One common variant was to have the top hair section parted on one side and combed over and slightly back to create a wave. (Wavy hair was in fashion in the 1940s.)
Dick did start with hair like that; longer on top and short side and back. In the very first panels, the top hair falls over his forehead. But he has been adventurous enogh to try out different fashions over the years to come.
The original Dick Grayson hairdo – short sides, longer on the top.
Tumblr media
Detective Comics # 38. By Bill Finger, Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson (1940).
As Robin. Top hair combed back, curls over the forehead.
When he becomes Robin, the top hair is combed back; a cowlick makes part of the front hair fall in two curls over his forehead.
Tumblr media
Detective Comics # 38. By Bill Finger, Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson (1940).
Silver Age/New Look. Parted on the side.
His hairstyle will look the same for more than two decades. With the Silver age/New Look in Batman (1964), Dick’s hair is more likely to be visibly parted on the side, and sometimes a curl will fall down over the forehead.
Tumblr media
Detective Comics # 327. By John Broome, art Carmine Infantino and Jie Giella (1964).
Longer fringe.
At some time in the very late 60s/early 70s, Dick grows a longer fringe that falls over the forehead (isn’t it a bit like the style popularized by The Beatles, you think?). This style will pretty much stay with him in the 70s, 80s and into the 90s.
Tumblr media
Batman # 209. By Frank Robbins, art Irv Novick and Joe Giella (1969).
Tumblr media
Tales of the Teen Titans # 44 (1984). By Marv Wolfmann and George Pérez, inkers Mike DeCarlo and Dick Giordano.
Long hair (mid-90s).
A few years in the 90s, Dick has long hair. Sometimes it was drawn as a mullet (short on front and sides, long at the back), sometimes just long all over; the artists don’t seem to be able to agree. It was Mirage, posing as Kory/Starfire, who cut his hair to this look, over Dick’s mild protest, in New Titans vol 1 # 88 (July 1992).
At times, Dick would have his long hair in a ponytial; funny enough, his hair was always much longer when he had it in a ponytail than when it was loose. It was that way he lost his long hair, in a fight in Nightwing vol 2 # 1 (October, 1996) when a thug cut off the ponytail.
Edit. Brian Stelfreeze, who designed the “fingerstrip look for Dick, wrote in the model sheet: "The "whip" is not all hair but keeps the look streamlined. It also changes Dick's appearance."

Curtains hairstyle/fringe and some variations (1996 to 2018).
After that, Dick went for what I think should be classified as the 90s curtains hairstyle, where the top hair is grown into a fringe that often falls over his forehead or even his eyes, and the hair is parted in the middle. It’s a lot like his original Robin hairstyle, to be honest, but his hair is often a bit longer on the sides than when he was a little Robin.
The following decades, he would mostly often stick to the curtain style, though sometimes the hair is parted on the side and he will look more like he did in the 80s. And in the Grayson comic book, the top hair was combed back, but often a few strands would fall forward.

Dick as a blonde – more likely than you think
Dick was supposed to be a blonde with a new secret identity, post his death in Forever Evil. Batman Eternal artist Jason Fabok made a Thanksgiving picture with a blonde Dick included (sitting behind Batman).
Tumblr media
However, plans change, and Dick kept his hair black in Grayson. According to the writer James Tynion IV on Twitter, “it mostly got dialed down to him removing a blonde wig on a case in the opening pages of Grayson #1″.

Dick did, however, occasionally use a blonde wig in the New Teen Titans years, as a disguise.

Recently shot in the head; buzz cut.
... And then came that unfortunate event when Dick was shot in the head on September 2019 (which had everyting to do with the story in the Batman title and nothing to do with telling good Nightwing stories). He came out of that with a buzz cut, short all over. Since then, his hairdo has gone through a few variations on short hair, including longer on the top but shaved on the sides. Incidentally, the shaved sides hairstyle for men was in vogue in 2019, so Dick continues to keep up with the fashion trends.

Still, I’m sure we’re all waiting for Dick to become the one and only Nightwing again, and let the hair grow a bit. And actually, we have had several stories where Dick is and looks like his normal self, while the amnesiac story drags out in the current Nightwing and other Bat-titles.

Full transcript:
It’s been a month since the House of Representatives was suddenly dissolved, tomorrow is election day. It all depends on the choice of the voters, your vote matters! Let’s vote! Good afternoon, let’s create a new world in our lives! I’m Fukuyama Masaharu! Yes, tomorrow is election day, of course I’ll be voting! Your vote can change the future of Japan! The opening song is Fukuyama Masaharu’s ‘Sou ~new love new world~’! 21 October 2017, 2pm. I'm Fukuyama Masaharu. This election is said to be the most intense one in recent times. Tomorrow is election day, I normally cast my vote on an earlier date, I think it should be the same this time too…? Actually, today’s broadcast is pre-recorded. In this election, young people can participate in voting too, it’s the first election to accept votes from 18/19 years old voters. How will it turn out? I: At that age, I didn’t have any interest in voting. Honestly speaking, me too! I was such a fool, so when I started paying high taxes, I wondered, “Ah, I have to pay so much, I clearly received so much royalties but why do I have to pay so much in taxes?” I: Did you discover it during ‘Good night’? Not yet! I: Not yet? I didn’t have to pay so much tax yet during ‘Good night’. I: So, you realised during ‘Sakurazaka’? The amount of taxes then was so high!! Although I was surprised when I received so much money, I was even more shocked when I had to pay taxes. But to live in Japan, I have to pay these taxes. So, it became the first time I thought of the question, “What are my taxes being used on?” Of course, there are many people who pay more taxes than me, but I don’t really know much about that. I learnt that taxes are used on security, culture and basic social security. I thought, “If I stay in this country, I’ll receive a pension.” But times have changed, and it makes no difference even if I’m no longer staying in Japan, although there was such a system in the past. Social security is just a number, and it doesn’t represent much. But if people get retrenched, where do they go and live after their 50s? I’ve thought of this problem before, including this problem in Japan itself. I’ve mentioned before that Fukuoka and Sendai are good choices. I: In these times, no matter where a musician goes, he can still continue working. Yes, he can still work. Also, where should the registered place of residence be moved to? A person can consider constantly changing the place by immigrating overseas, occasionally returning to Japan. What will my relationship with Japan be like then? I’ve thought a lot about problems like these. Today’s show will feature “I’m sorry, mother” letters from all over the country. This goes hand in hand with the new single, titled “I’m sorry, mother”… (t/n: a joke, please don’t go searching for this) The “I’m sorry, mother” plan, will it ever be realised? Anyway, there are many letters from mothers too, from all over Japan. Please look forward to it! Also, we will do a mass sending out of stickers from this show today. Just tell us the two keywords that we will mention in this broadcast, and you might win the stickers! We’re going to send out 99 stickers! Ah? We’ve already decided on 99 stickers? Why? I: Because today is the 99th broadcast of the show. Eh? Really? It’s the 100th episode the next week? The first keyword is ‘I’m sorry, mother’. The second keyword will be announced later, please listen carefully! 21 October, the mass giveaway of 99 stickers! It’s the season of holidays, if it takes only 35 minutes to go to New York, will you try it? I just saw this news recently. I: This is a plan from an American space development company, SpaceX. It has plans to use rockets as international transport for passengers. From Tokyo to New York, it’ll take only 35 minutes. The highest speed is 27000km/hr, but when this will be released hasn’t been announced yet. I know, but why does it only take 35 minutes? I don’t get it. After take-off, will we reach after turning around a few corners? I: Because the Earth is spinning too. Since the Earth is spinning too, that’s really convenient isn’t it? I: Just 35 minutes. But the businessmen in Tokyo and New York will be very busy. The 10 hours spent on an international flight are very important, it’s a time when no one bothers you. Recently, I travelled to Venice and San Sebastian for international film festivals. In the past, I thought taking a 11, 12 hours flight to Frankfurt was a long time… but I think it’s such a short time now! I do this and that, then I sleep. The schedule is too tight. “Ah!! I’m going to reach! My private time is over!” It feels very short. It felt long in the past, since I could sleep again and again and wake up to find that I haven’t arrived yet. Nowadays, my thoughts on this have changed. I: So even if this rocket is put into use, you’ll still… I’ll still consider it, since I can reach New York in 35 minutes. I can adapt to the time difference on the first day and start working the next day, perhaps I’ll schedule it this way. But although humans often say they’ll make full use of the time when they’re at a meeting, they’ll turn around and say, “If anything happens, we can have a few reserve days.” The schedule becomes like this! The world is annoying like this! There’s advantages and disadvantages to this. Fuji-kun from Kanagawa Prefecture, male, 39 years old: I’ll be going for the males-only concert this year! M: Thank you! Every year, I look forward to it. \NM: Thanks, please bring a hundred friends too. I’m writing this letter because there’s something I cannot understand. My daughter is entering high school this year, and she says she wants to buy a guitar. M: It’s SHISHAMO! (t/n: high school Japanese band) Fujiwara Sakura! She says she wants to buy a guitar, but I don’t know how to choose. I thought it would be best to ask Masha, do you have any guitar recommendations for girls? Honestly, a guitar maniac’s answer would be the old Yamaha FG series. It was produced in the 70s, the tone is great and it’s cheap. You can buy it at 4/5/60,000 yen. But you have to spend some time to repair most of them, such as the fret wire and the nut. So, it adds up to around 7/80,000 yen since you have to spend a bit more. But I feel that rather than buying a new guitar at 100,000 yen, it’s better to buy a guitar from the 70s, it’s even better if you get one from the 60s. If you buy the Yamaha FG series, you still have to repair it later, so you’ll spend around the same amount of money. But the tone is much better. A while ago, I went to Music Station and talked to Yuzu’s Iwasawa Koji. Iwasawa is still using the Yamaha FG series guitar, an old one. It's an amazing guitar. Kazuyan from Gunma Prefecture, male, 47 years old: I wrote this letter because I wanted to ask for your opinion. I’m the same age as you, but my daughter is currently 14 years old, in the 2nd grade in junior high. As the years go by, we talk less and less each year. She seems to be very impatient. “Hey, daughter, do you hate your dad?! What do you hate about me? You’ve got to tell me what you’re unhappy about! Isn’t that right, her mother?” She says my general cleanliness is terrible, so I drank and cried the whole night away (actually it’s a lie). M: Kazuyan, honestly, you can do without the lie… I want to become cleaner, but I don’t know how to do that. I’m just a normal office worker, there’s nothing visibly weird about me. So even if I want to become cleaner, I don’t know what I should do to make others feel that I’m clean. I think you give off a fresh/clean feeling, so what should I take note of to seem like a clean person to others? Please give me advice since we’re the same age, thank you. Kazuyan, it’s the hair on your nape and near your ears, what is it called? Anyway, these two places have to give off a clean feeling. Imanami, did you cut your hair today? I: I did. As long as you cut the hair on your nape, you’ll seem clean. Also, the feeling that the skin gives off to other people - skin shouldn’t be dry, your face shouldn’t be too oily too. What should you do then? The older you get, the more important your hairstyle becomes. I don’t like my hairstyle too. Actually, I want to get an even shorter haircut. I: Shorter than now? I want to get a really short haircut. I: Like a kariage? (t/n: kariage = sides shaved, short back hairstyle) A kariage doesn’t fit me, I don’t want it. I want to get a shorter fringe though. I’m only allowing my fringe to grow this long because of CFs and dramas, since a long fringe can form many hairstyles. Actually, I don’t normally do my hair. I honestly don’t like my fringe. Ah, besides this, there’s the nails too. Imanami, can I see your nails? Don’t pick your nails, I’ve told you before. I: Don’t you feel like picking at your nails? Definitely not! It’s because I don’t pick my nails, so I put nail protection cream. Taking care of your nails can help you maintain your hygiene, especially for middle-aged men. I want to do something about my toenails too, it often grows crookedly. I: The ends often split. Yes, yes! I: And then I’ll pick at it. I told you not to do that. I: After I pull it out, it’ll grow back. You can’t pick at it. The ends of your toenails are too white, it looks like a fossil. I: That’s right. It’s like excavating fossils. My hands can’t touch some of my toenails… I really want to do something about them… it’s better to go to a beautician. The you who lives in Tokyo, do you think Tokyo is a good place to live in? Recently, a study examined the economy and liveability statistics of 44 cities around the world and ranked them. Tokyo got 3rd place for 2 years straight. I: The 2nd place for these 2 years is New York, but the gap has lessened. Which city is the first? I: London. The property prices in these cities are very high. I: Are you considering property prices? Of course. I don’t really like these cities, whether it’s London or New York or Tokyo, because the property prices are really high, especially in London. It would be better if the property prices were a bit cheaper. I: Yes, the real estate rankings aren’t good. It's in 17th place. New York is expensive too. I: New York is in 34th place. It’s expensive to live in Tokyo too. I: 14th place. I think a better place would be Singapore. I: That’s true overall, but the liveability ranking is only at 28th place. Well, I won’t look at the property in Singapore then. My grandfather was in real estate, I suppose I inherited this interest from him. It’s hereditary. Since I was young, I’ve always been looking at property, I still like real estate even now. But the properties in Tokyo, London and New York are really very expensive. How should I look at this ranking? The next segment is 'I'm sorry, mother'. Saga Prefecture, Tsuku-chan, 41 years old, office worker, male: This segment ‘I’m sorry, mother’ is very moving, I have a story I want to share too! Now that I look back, my mother has always taken care of me with her motherly love and warmth, but I’ve only given her trouble and worries. I used to be like a countryside bully, often using “Omae!” to call my mother. (t/n: Omae is used by seniors to address juniors.) M: S-A-G-A, Saga Prefecture. During junior high, I was unapologetic even when I saw my teacher and mother running around because of me. The only woman I’ve ever hit was my mother. M: You hit your mother?! When we were arguing, I hit her face and she cried. I only regretted it then. After I hit her, I didn’t speak to her for a month. It was a painful time. But she still secretly prepared a birthday cake for me, I was so embarrassed. I only got into less trouble when I entered high school. I was such a fool back then, I made her worry so much. After 20 years, I’ve become an office worker. When I think of what happened then, I feel even more apologetic towards my mother now. But I can’t simply tell her I’m sorry, because she’ll start crying once she hears my apology. She won’t be able to stop crying! (t/n: Kyushu accent) I can’t say sorry, so I say thank you instead to make up for what I did in the past. What a fool! I think you should just write a letter. Using this letter from the broadcast, tell her “I wrote a letter to Fukuyama, he says it’s best to write you a letter." If she asks “what?”, you can tell her “no, it was Fukuyama who told me to write it.” If she says anything, just tell her “Fukuyama told me to do it.” Do write a letter to her. Kanagawa Prefecture, Hironobu, 42 years old, male, office worker: Fukuyama-san, I enjoy listening to your show every week, I’ve been listening for more than 10 years already. This is the first time I’m writing a letter to you. After hearing about the segment ‘I’m sorry, mother’, I thought of me and my mother. M: The first letter after listening for 10 years, because of this segment. When I was born, my father had already passed away. It was my mother who raised me alone. Although I didn’t do anything bad, but I did go through a rebellious phase and I had a bad relationship with my mother then. I still remember it clearly even now. When I was in the 2nd grade of junior high, my mother was 42 years old. She asked, “Hironobu, if…and I’m saying if, I have a boyfriend, what do you think of it?” I got shocked, so I immediately said, “How did you get a boyfriend! You’re an old and ugly woman!” Actually, this wasn’t what I really thought, I just carelessly said it because I was surprised. At that time, my mother… M: That’s a weird way of responding. I still remember my mother’s weird smile then, even now. M: That’s not a weird smile, it’s a forced one. Afterwards, I met with a guy who seemed to be my mother’s boyfriend at a family restaurant in my hometown. He said hello to me, then I left to meet my friend from a school club. When I went home, I told my mother, “I hate that sort of old man.” I never saw him again. My mother is living alone healthily now, but when I think of this, I wonder if I’ve ruined my mother’s happiness. I feel really apologetic towards my mother. Everyone is like this, when we’re young we tend to see the opposite sex as females. But our mothers are still our mothers, but for the first time we realise that our mothers are females too. But during this period, we don’t want to acknowledge this fact. Especially to a boy in junior high, his mother isn’t a woman, but a mother. It’s weird to see her with a boyfriend. I: This is especially true in this period… but when it’s more acceptable once the boy reaches his 20s. It’s really hard to accept. Hironobu, you and your mother… perhaps your mother doesn’t have confidence. I hope Hironobu can decide. Your mother was in her prime years when she gave birth to you at 28 years old. There probably were men who liked her, since she was in her prime then. But because she had to raise you up alone, she didn’t have time to get into a relationship. Later, perhaps at work, she meets a man. She felt his warmth, but because she hadn’t been in a romantic relationship for so long, she forgot how to be in one. So, she wanted to show you who he was before deciding. But since Hironobu couldn’t accept him, this romance ended. It’s not Hironobu’s fault, your words may have been a good thing for you and your mother. Honestly, a man may never be able to see his mother as a woman for his whole life. I: Even now, it still feels like she comes from a planet of mothers. An alien mother from the planet of mothers. When mothers decide to remarry… there are many reasons, be it for finance or psychological support. It’s normal to want to remarry. But whether the child can accept, I don't know. my father passed away when I was 17 years old. If my mother now wants to find a partner in the final years of her life, and she wants to marry him or stay with him without marrying him, I don’t think I’ll call that man my father. At this age… I: Man-to-man, I think you’ll just say, “I’ll hand my mother to you then.” Of course, there are people who still want to accept a new family member and call him “dad”. But at this age, I won’t. Everyone has their own anniversaries, and today’s date is an anniversary to me too… what is this… I’ve mentioned this before, Imanami. Can you be a bit better with dates? I: You’re releasing more and more singles, this is just an anniversary of a single’s release. What the hell is that, a single release anniversary? I: Today is the anniversary of your 4th single, ‘WOH WOW/It’s Just That I’ve Changed’. It achieved 89th place on Oricon in 1991. What are you trying to say? I: Your next single became popular. Good night? The sales only got a bit better. I: You’ve said this before, WOH WOW was the last song you couldn’t sell out. That…that…you’re phrasing it in such a delicate way, are you making fun of me?! I: No, no. Fukuyama, this is the last song you couldn’t sell out! This is the last song I couldn’t sell out! You’re too much, is there still such a way of bullying in the 21st century?! Is this the new way of bullying in 2017? I: But this song was the first one to enter the Oricon charts, how did you feel then? About that… everyone often asks me, “How did you feel then?” I was very happy, but I wasn’t overly excited. I remember that I was thinking that I could finally see a pinhole-sized light. Thank you, BROS! Saga Prefecture, Ago-chan, 57 years old, housewife, female: I went to the gym/after two days/my butt jive up. M: What does jive up mean? After my husband retired, I wanted to keep fit. I started to do walking exercises every morning, and I went to the gym too. I really wanted to work out, so I went to the gym. I felt like I had to try everything, so I tried out every single machine, including the squat weightlifting bar. M: Seya!! (t/n: Kansai-ben, meaning that's how it is) But when I stepped hard on the ground, the old companion in my butt, the secretly hidden haemorrhoids said, “Hello!” I: Hahaha… that… even now, ‘Hello!’ is still an important song… M: I know… The haemorrhoids said, “Hello!” and jumped out into the clear, it was so painful. The coach was a young man and he ran over to help me up, asking, “Is your waist alright? Is there something wrong with your waist? It’s your waist, right!” I said, “Yes, it’s my waist that’s hurting.” M: Why didn’t he ask whether it’s your haemorrhoids… Afterwards, I used my own experience to resolve it quickly. M: Ago-chan, you’re so well-experienced… no, you’re a professional! “I quickly dealt with it, then I continued working out.” Your haemorrhoids came out already though! When I went home in the car, my husband said, “Just now, you just… Bonjour, right? Don’t lift weights anymore!” My dad said ‘Hello’ to this before too. I: He had it inside? It split? It split inside-out! On the surface too. I: How painful. He often shoved it back in. “Ah, so you can just shove it back in with a push! Amazing! So it comes out like this!” Fukuoka Prefecture, Mikiko-chan, housewife, female, 54 years old: I met my ex-boyfriend in a funeral home. In February this year, I met my ex-boyfriend from high school again. The venue was my aunt’s funeral. He was in charge of greeting the family members. His hair has started to become thinner and his looks changed a lot too. But I recognised him at first sight, so we talked about the past. Because I’m a family member and he’s an employee, we couldn’t talk for too long. Even though I’m his ex-girlfriend, I feel like he did his work too poorly. My relatives were a little annoyed too, and my 25-year-old niece even said, “That baldy! I can’t wait for all your hair to drop out! Baldy!” I didn’t dare to say that I was his ex-girlfriend when the funeral ended. At this age, when I hear someone say bad things about my ex, I still feel a bit sensitive over it. M: Of course! You can criticise his work, but saying that he’s a baldy is a bit… he even wanted all his hair to drop out, he shouldn’t be like this. It’s rather rare to meet an ex-boyfriend at a funeral, but at this age, we’re all concerned about people from the past. It’s easy for them to know how I’ve been living, but I want to see them again. I wonder how they’re doing since we haven’t met for so long. (t/n: talks about Kanpai Japan concert, males-only concert, his new song for the Totto-chan drama. Skip to 35:20 for subtitles) The last keyword for the stickers contest is ‘The males-only concert is forever!’ Please put both keywords together and send it to us for the lucky draw. It’s interesting if you put them both together… (t/n: I’m sorry, mother, the males-only concert is forever!) Next week’s broadcast is the 100th episode! We’ll read lots of letters! But our casual talk is often very long.

KEY WEST ON A SATURDAY NIGHT
KEY WEST ON A SATURDAY NIGHT - https://keywestlou.com/key-west-on-a-saturday-night-2/ Reminiscing Originally posted July 2017   For me, last night was unique.
