The History of Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was originally inhabited by the Tequesta Native American tribe, who lived along the banks of the New River and the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The name "Fort Lauderdale" comes from a series of forts that were built during the Second Seminole War (1835-1842). In the early 16th century, European explorers began to arrive in the region. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León visited the area in 1513 during his quest for the Fountain of Youth. In 1893, Frank Stranahan, who is a trader and businessman, built a trading post on the New River, which served as a hub for the local community. In the early 20th century, the city experienced a population boom and rapid growth. In the 1950s and 1960s, Fort Lauderdale became a popular destination for college students on spring break. It has developed and flourished since then.

the prince and the scholar | albedo x reader.
his royal highness, crown prince of mondstadt, heir apparent to the kreideprinz throne, firstborn to queen rhinedottir, albedo, is currently missing from the first ball of the social season. sent by his mother, you run to fetch him, only to come back with more than just a prince in your arms.
au; royal au!!
warnings: none!!
a/n: whoever recommended fairy fountain orchestra version for what to listen to while writing this ily. also!! the title and the story is in reference to the book that klee mentions in my other albedo one-shot, “routine”, which you can find here :D i’ve always loved the concept of prince albedo so here we are ^-^!! message me if you wanna say anything!!
Tumblr media
albedo’s tower seemed like its own castle. at the base of the crown prince’s residence, there was a courtyard, and a reflecting pool bordered by topiary bushes and cecilias ordered by him. the tower stood on the cliffs overlooking the shores of cider lake. the walls secluding his garden left him separated from most of the rest of the royal residence.
you opened the door to his courtyard, quietly shutting it behind you. walking forward, you looked at yourself in the pool. the moon and stars reflected on its waters, and a faint light emanated from the palace’s windows. looking at yourself, you certainly could pass for royalty in the clothes that you wore. white cape, jewel-studded overcoat, and hair neatly done, it would seem as though you were more royal than a resident scholar. ball music and chatter seemed distant now, as you entered your own little world hidden by the brick walls.
as you approached the tower, you looked above, finding the crown prince hidden behind an easel. albedo was bedecked in royal garments belonging to that of the highest nobility. his cloak rested on his shoulders and draped onto the floor as he was sitting, and you could only imagine that the stars bedecking the cloth were splayed out on the marble floor. his gold crown sat on a table filled with the finest oil paints, glimmering against the thin light from his room.
“your highness,” you called, putting your hands on your hips. “your mother, rhinedottir, has called for you, and has for the last hour.”
he didn’t reply, blissfully dabbing his paintbrush onto the canvas. his face was perfectly neutral, but even in this light, you found him beautiful. the moonlight highlighted his blonde hair to be that of snow, and blue eyes the color of the lake before him.
“his royal highness, albedo, crown prince of mondstadt, heir apparent to the kreideprinz throne, firstborn to queen rhinedottir,” you sighed, looking up at the balcony, only to not see him move. “your highness--”
“i thought we agreed to forgo honorifics,” he replied, raising an eyebrow but not letting his gaze stray from the easel. he continued to paint, and you took that as your cue to enter his residence.
the marble staircase climbed up the center of the tower, with wide windows looking out to the courtyard. you ascended, looking at the various paintings on each of the walls. the sight was familiar, as for the last year or so, you had spent much of your time here.
you had been originally called to the capital city from sumeru as ordered by the prince himself. albedo, as you got to know him, was more interested in becoming a scholar like yourself than he was a prince. he was an intellectual, preferring to spend his time among his books over other nobles during tea time. his grasp on alchemical concepts was almost as immediate as yours. albedo was a brilliant mind, and you respected him as such.
reluctantly, you opened the door to his bedroom. it was as neat and tidy as he was, with cream-colored sheets neatly folded over the mattress. the desk, despite being full of books and tools for alchemy, was organized. the vanity, where he should have been preparing for the ball, was empty. only the gentle light from the staircase illuminated the otherwise moonlit room.
you neared him, looking at the ivory silk cape that trailed from the balcony and inside. the balcony was just wide enough for the easel, albedo, a table for his crown and paints, and an empty chair. you sidestepped his starry cloak, looking at the gold details. he continued to paint, white clothes on and all. “your mother is looking for you,” you said, leaning against the doorway.
“really now?” he hummed as he switched brushes. “so, she has sent you for me.”
“yes, your highness.”
“tell her that i have no interest in coming down.”
“it’s the first of the social season,” you said, sitting down next to him. your eyes caught gaze on his blue and gold sash. on his neck sat his vision, decorating the center of his collar. his epaulette sat dutifully on his shoulders. “it would be a shame to see that the prince is absent.”
“and why would i go, when i’m enjoying myself here?” he countered stubbornly and softly. the paintbrush met the canvas again.
you took note of what he was drawing. it was a portrait of the view overlooking the balcony and to the lake. the details were precise and immaculate, with the shading of the water’s waves, and the tiny leaves on the topiary bushes’ branches. it was a wonderful painting indeed.
“your highness, her majesty will not be pleased,” you tried again, and without success. “this is my first noble event as well. i...i would like your guidance in the ballroom.”
for a moment, he paused, before setting down his brush. “your first ball, you say?” albedo murmured, setting down his brush. “for a scholar like yourself, a royal ball would be something out of a fairytale, would it not?”
“i suppose.”
“then i shall do my best to make it your best gala,” he said, rising from his chair and offering you a hand. you pulled yourself up, looking at his gentle blue eyes. “hand me my crown, y/n.”
with gloved hands, you reached for his golden diadem that had been passed down for eons since mondstadt’s founding. its details included the star crest of the kreideprinz family, and small details of the family flower, the cecilia. the diamonds of the crown glimmered under the moon, and you placed it on his unruly blond head of hair. he looked like a real life storybook hero, one that children would fawn over when read to at the fountain square. you couldn’t help but feel a little enamored with him, too.
when albedo’s eyes met yours, he only let out the ghost of a laugh. his shoulders shifted as he gracefully swept his cloak behind him, and he offered a hand to you. you took it gratefully, and started your descent down the stairs.
there was no conversation between the two of you as the two of you headed outside of the tower. the crown prince’s cape fluttered against the night winds, the only sound besides the fragments of conversation and music from the main hall of the castle. you gazed upon moonlit cecilias, as you crossed by the reflection pool.
opening the door from the prince’s residence, you were met the royal gardens. like albedo’s courtyard, it was lined with reflecting pools and cecilias. its stairs led up to the castle, where the shadows of ballgown dresses swayed against the chandelier light. the orchestra was louder now as you both approached the ballroom.
“y/n,” albedo said, tenderly tugging on your arm. quietly, he cleared his throat and tucked his hands behind his back. “do i...do i look alright?”
looking back at him, you studied him with a smile. “of course you do, your highness,” you whispered, patting his arm. briefly, you aired your thoughts of his beauty. “you always look beautiful.”
“and i, you,” he said. turning once more, you tucked your hand in his, beginning to walk once more. suddenly, he stopped you, and you turned back with curious eyes. “y/n?”
“yes?”
“may i ask for your hand in a dance?” albedo asked. “it would be beneficial that you and i dance before going in front of the nobles and my mother.”
your face burned hotter than when one of his experiments blew up in front of your eyes. shyly, you presented your hand to the blond prince. “yes, you may.”
gracefully, he laid his lips on the back of your gloved hand. even through the silk cloth, you could feel the warmth of those soft, very kissable, pink lips. his hands intertwined with yours as he began to take the lead. accompanied only with the faint reverb of the orchestra, he began waltzing perfectly, eyes cast only onto yours. you could hear the ghost of a hum come from his chest. “right foot forward, and then to the left,” he addressed in an ethereal tone. “my, you’re quite talented at this. are you sure you’re a scholar and not a royal?”
“i’m flattered, your highness, but the credit should go to you,” you replied bashfully, “you are nothing short of prince charming.”
he twirled you around at that moment, face hidden for a moment, but cheeks stained a bright red. he dipped you down by the waist scandalously and suddenly, face close to yours. your expression turned to that of flustered concern, but albedo’s face only observed your features. his eyes shimmered in the moonlight as his lips almost brushed against yours.
suddenly, he pulled you back up again, letting go of your hands. “apologies. i got carried away,” he expressed his regret, pulling away with a faraway look in his eyes.
“no worries,” you said, drawing your hands close to your chest. “now, shall we go to the ballroom?”
“y/n,” he said once more, looking up at your figure on the staircase. you tilted your head in response, waiting for his statement. “perhaps it is rude of me to say, but i wish to be selfish with you for a moment more.”
he ascended the stairs until he was a step beneath you. taking your hand in his own, he thumbed the back of your hand. he looked up at you with searching azure eyes, and you stared back in anticipation. “we are in quite a compromising position,” you whispered. “what will the nobles say, your highness?”
“call me by my real name, albedo,” he interrupted, shaking his head.
“albedo,” you addressed once more as his face seemed to get infinitely closer to yours. your heart began to beat even louder, and veins rushing with adrenaline. “what are you trying to get at?”
“can i kiss you?” he asked bluntly, observing your reaction. your face bloomed with heat as you tried to still your pounding heart. he looked back at you with eager eyes.
“yes,” you responded eventually, before placing a hand on his chest and leaning your head down. his hand met your face and cupped it gently as his lips met yours. they were effortlessly soft and gentle, just as the prince himself was. it was like how you imagined how a true fairytale prince would kiss you, and as the music crescendoed and flooded the royal garden, you felt like you were in a storybook meant for children.
albedo let go of you eventually, holding you by the waist. “you are simply divine,” he breathed out, cheeks stained the color of a setting sun. the shadows of ballgowns and suits waiting for his arrival seemed to not be on his mind, and nor were they on yours.
“and you are simply enchanting,” you whispered, before leaning down to kiss your prince once more.

You said you could talk all day about Welsh castles. Handily enough, I brought a pen and paper to this lecture, so Imma pull up a chair and wait patiently for it to start. :D
this is SUCH an exciting ask thank you SO MUCH for letting me talk about castles. okay im gonna talk about my favourites
Caernarfon
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
built as residence after edward 1st conquered wales in 1282, after he killed Prince of Wales Llywelyn ap Gruffudd.
edward sought to consolidate power and conquer independent Wales, and built the "iron ring of castles"
caernarfon castle was built in 5 years and was primarily built for 🌟 show 🌟 so edward could basically show how much money he had and how powerful he was
he liked roman history and built the towers with colourful stone, reminiscent of constantinople. the colour has since faded tho
however! just because it was built to show how extra edward was, it was also defensive. the only entrance are the 2 gatehouses, the queen's gate being at the shore for supplies and the kings gate
the kings gate was fearsome and built with holes to pour oil and boiling water down on attackers (also known as "murder holes")
if you survived that, you'd have 4 doors and 5 portcullises to deal with
the castle was briefly seized by a welsh revolution led by my man Madog ap Llywelyn in 1294, but taken back by troops later.
the welsh were deeply angry about Edward and how he conquered wales and killed the Prince. we hate being conquered
it was challenged again in 1403 + 1404 by national treasure Owain Glyndwr but he didn't manage to take it.
it was built on the docks and caernarfon is a walled town so its really very useful for defence.
Conwy
Tumblr media
one of eddie boys iron ring of castles, finished construction in 1287 on conwy River
intended to be a mirror of the now ruined Deganwy castle
this was built purely for defence. its pretty much impregnable, due to its steep walls and the fact its on the river so you'd see an army coming a mile off. the bridge was the only way to march over
it was mainly a garrison town. the english kicked the welsh people out of most of the iron rings towns and made it illegal for us to live there. theres an old law thats never been struck out that you can still shoot a welsh man with an arrow off the walls if theyre in the towns. that's right folks, it was illegal for us to be in our own country.
it had 8 towers and 2 barbicans
it was attacked by Madogs rebellion the same time as caernarfon castle but they didn't take it
it fell into disuse but was hastily reactivated during the civil war in 1642
in 1646 it was besieged and ultimately surrendered
Deganwy
there aren't many images due to the fact it's in complete ruins but here's a digital reconstruction
Tumblr media
this site has a lot of history due to its highly naturally defensible position. evidence of prehistoric, iron age and Romano-British forts
situated on volcanic rock, and possibly the seat of Maelgwyn Gwynedd, circa 520-547
in AD812, it was damaged by lightning, then in AD822, what was left was destroyed by saxon invaders
robert of Rhuddlan rebuilt it in 1080. the history is vague and murky after this but it was in Welsh hands by 1191
in 1211, Llywelyn ap Iorwerth rebelled against king John, who previously let Llywelyn keep the castle. the castle was pre-emptively destroyed by the welsh to prevent it from falling into English hands (as I said, an enviably defensible position). Llywelyn rebuilt it again by 1228, THEN pre-emptively destroyed again
1245-54, Henry 3rd built it into a medieval fortification, but it was captured by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd.
along came edward 1st and he built conwy castle instead, Deganwy fell to ruins
nowadays, you can visit the few ruins, but apparently you have to be careful because the history is so rich and long and bloody you might accidentally come across human bones
Gwyrch
Tumblr media Tumblr media
while beautiful, the castle itself is actually pretty new. it was built between 1810-1825 by Lloyd Hesketh, to honour his wife and their ancestors. (forget a wedding ring, build me a castle as a romantic gesture)
the aforementioned ancestors were the Llwyds (anglicised as lloyd) of Plas yn y Gwyrch. gwyrch was their ancestral home. situated in the castle estate are 2 iron age hillforts, a roman shrine, lead and silver mines, and medieval battle sites. the reason I include this castle is because of the surrounding history.
built directly on the coast, nestled into a huge hill, with a watchtower, very hard to capture. the watchtower is further along the hill and would give fair warning via flaming arrow if an army was coming.
during the WW2, it was home to 200 odd Jewish refugees
was abandoned was was renovated and then became the film site for im a celebrity
Beaumaris
Tumblr media Tumblr media
another one of the colonisers iron ring castles, built in 1295
edward built it on an entirely new site, and is known as one of Britain's most sophisticated medieval military structures
almost geometric symmetry
practically impregnable due to the defences shown in the image. high inner defences with low circuit walls
ironically it saw very little action till the civil war and the construction wasn't completed
the first line of defence is an 18ft wide moat, and the dock is protected by a shooting deck
the sea gate had murder holes
if you managed to get through that gate, you'd be faced with 11 obstacles, including a barbican, more murder holes, 3 portcullises and several sets of doors. you had to get through this while dealing with arrow fire and boiling oil from all directions.
Once you get in, there's 6 massive interior towers, and then you're dead
Abergavenny
Tumblr media
built in 1087 to the traditional motte and bailey configuration
it was initially timber but was rebuilt with stone at around 1100
by 1175, the castle was in the hands of William de Braose, who wanted to defeat his welsh rival, Seisyll ap Dyfnwal. he invited Seisyll to the castle along with several prominent Welsh men who opposed saxon rule, to propose reconciliation. the men and their armies were brutally massacred once inside the Great Hall. I think I read somewhere it was inspiration for the Red Wedding in game of thrones.
in 1182, Hywel ap Iorwerth of Caerleon attacked and severely damaged the castle
several rebuilds, most notable addition in the 1400s which was the barbican gatehouse. this was placed to defend against our Lord and saviour Owain Glyndwr and his epic rebellion
known as a very very very difficult castle to penetrate
Denbigh
Tumblr media
another of edwards iron ring castles, built in 1282
walled town, colonised and populated by the english after booting the welsh out
naturally defensible position
the work wasn't completed in 1294 when Madog ap Llywelyn seized it
the castle kinda passed hands until the 14th century when it came into the possession of the mortimer family
it was attacked during the wars of the Roses and the town was burned
held by royalists in the civil war but taken in 1646 after a parliamentary siege
seized again by royalists in 1659 and they lay waste to the towers and walls of the castle
the town lay pretty much abandoned until the 19th century
the castle has 3 octagonal towers at the gatehouse, which was constructed of impressive decorative stonework to symbolise Royal authority
it also has 8 mural towers, barbicans and defensive terraces to protect it
I've hit the image limit and I can't think of other favourites rn but if I remember ill reblog and add!! thank you so much for letting me talk about welsh castles theyre a special interest of mine i hope u enjoyed

Introducing Jay
So I decided that some of the things I’ve written for a D&D campaign I’m in should maybe get to see the light of day beyond a lonely google doc - Here’s the first bit of writing I ever did for my OC James “Jay” Marina, a tiefling rogue who grew up in a gang in a southern port city known as Etalan.
*NOTE: While Jay is my character, the world that he lives in belongs to the one and only @aliencircus, resident DM and all around asshole (affectionate).
Without further ado, here he is:
/
Jay was left on the shore of a small marina (1175, Sun’s Reign) just out of the water’s reach and found by a sailor early in the morning. He was taken to the local orphanage, which balked initially at taking him in. They did reluctantly accept, as they couldn’t find a justifiable reason not to under the law.
He was given the last name Marina to signify where he was found. He was also left with a small, round pendant with the initial “J” on it, from which he derived the name James when he got older.
The other kids at the orphanage had just as much reluctance to interact with James as the adults did, though it wasn’t softened by sugarcoating. With typical child-like bluntness, Jay was excluded from almost all social aspects of the orphanage. It didn’t help that the caretakers running the place held no sympathy for him either.
At six, deciding the outside world must be better, James ran away from the orphanage, only to be found (luckily or not) by Alessio, the leader of one of the fringe gangs in the city. The gangs were violent only with each other, preferring to keep bystanders out of their business, which was one of illegal trade and smuggling.
1185, Green Wake
Ow, ow, fuck.
“What happened this time, Jamsey-boy?” A voice called.
Damn. Out of all people, why Renzo? James diverted his path down the pier, trying to sidestep both Renzo and his humiliation. He must’ve had bad footwork, though, because he couldn’t manage to avoid either tonight.
“Pick a fight with a cobblestone again?” Renzo taunted, his leering face swimming into Jay’s vision through the haze of blood and pain.
“No, funk ‘ove,” James said, trying to tone down his newly nasal voice. His right hand held a mess of dirty cloth to his bleeding nose, so he used his left to shove Renzo out of his way. James stalked over to the edge of the pier and glanced down. Soon he’d have to remove his bundle of bloody disgustingness and check the damage he’d been dealt this time. So stupid. He should have checked before taking the back way. Now all he had was a broken nose and few less coins to show for it. He wondered idly if his nose would just fall off if he kept managing to take every hit to the face.
Jay learned invaluable skills in hand-to-hand combat, self defense and stealing from his fellow gang members. However, because of his heritage, James was still an outcast of sorts within the gang. The only person to seek out interaction with him was Alessio, and it wasn’t in a friendly way. As James got older, Alessio sought to use him as an intimidation tactic for their rivals, but never treated him as an equal. James still has mixed feelings about Alessio’s manipulations and abuses, as he still sees Alessio as someone who took him in when no one else would.
1188, First Frost
“Jay,” Alessio’s voice was warm around the single syllable. “I was hoping to talk to you.”
“Me?” Jay asked. Alessio’s mouth snaked into an amused smile, head tilting a bit as he studied James. It made James feel a little like meat on the butcher’s rack, with hungry eyes of customers searching for their next meal.
“You,” Alessio said. “You are an extraordinary being, you know that, don’t you, Jay? You’re… different. Special.” At this he towered over all of Jay’s thirteen-year-old gangly five-and-change feet. Not menacingly, though, just… there.
“I’m not sure I would describe it that way,” James told him, surprised. Usually people described it as more of a curse. Or an abomination. Sometimes if they were feeling really clever it was something along the lines of ‘a horrid scourge upon the earth put here by the devil to corrupt men’s hearts’. Jay was rather fond of that one.
“The eye of the beholder, my dear James,” Alessio waved off this topic with a flick of his fingers and moved on, making a 180 to find his way to the cabinet James knew held Alessio’s stolen liquors. “I want you to do something for me.”
“And what’s that?”
“Old man Salvatore won’t pay up. Go to his house, make him,” Alessio delivered his order nonchalantly, drink already half poured.
“Make him?” James asked. Alessio stilled, letting the liquor bottle bang to the table top. He swiveled slowly.
“I’m sorry, was that part not clear?” There was something dangerous in his voice. Jay flinched and then cursed himself for it.
Alessio’s eyes narrowed. “I said, make him. Use those useless devil horns of yours and promise him hell in the afterlife or whatever-the-fuck. Unless they’re taking up too much space in your brain to think?”
James shook his head. “Yes, sir.” He didn’t want to scare the old man but risking Alessio’s temper was worse. He still felt twinges in his jaw when he chewed, from the bottle Alessio had smashed into his head last time he’d been a little too soft on someone.
Alessio’s smile returned with a vengeance, warm again, falsely gentle.
“That’s my boy.”
To keep the gang afloat, Jay worked jobs like all the other members. Mostly smuggling and pickpocketing. Despite what should have been promised protection from the gang in return, however, Jay often found himself the victim of muggings or attacks. He learned quickly never to turn his back on a dark alley.
When he was fourteen (1189), James met a girl, roughly his age, named Elena, who was the daughter of a merchant in the city. She was one of the few people that managed to see past his heritage and Elena became the closest to a friend that James had ever had. Not even a year into their friendship, Elena’s merchant father was discovered to be involved in corrupt dealings with one of the inner city gangs. To keep him quiet, the gang brutally murdered the entire family and left their bodies on a busy street the next morning as a warning. When James attempted to attend Elena’s funeral, he was barred entrance.
1190, Mid Year
“Let me in! Fuck you! Let me in, she was my friend, too! She was my friend…” James kicked and thrashed, a wild animal howl of rage and grief tearing itself from his chest as the guards heaved him bodily away from the doors to the Church, where Elena’s extended family entered, gawking at the scene in horror.
Jay hit the ground roughly as the guards tossed him like a sack of potatoes: with  little care and great distaste.
“I don’t think so, you little monster,” One of them said, spitting. He just missed Jay’s face, but Jay couldn’t care less. Now that he was off his feet, he found he had little motivation to return to them. Sensing the fight was over, the guards regained their post and poise at the door. James stayed on the ground.
Elena was gone. Elena was gone? No, no that couldn’t be right. But he’d heard the news on the tongues of people who were there. He’d seen the artist’s rendition of the gruesome scene in the paper. Felt the truth in his bones when he’d broken into her shattered, bloody house and seen the destruction first hand. Elena was gone. His only friend, murdered, killed in cold blood. And for what? Her father’s mistake. A stupid mistake.
James had only wanted to see her one last time, to say goodbye, that was all. But the only thing he saw was the looks of disgust on his fellow mourner’s faces before the Church doors boomed shut with a bone-chilling echo of finality.
Goodbye, Elena,  he thought. I’m sorry. So, so sorry.
Distraught, Jay buried himself in smuggling jobs during the day and the vibrant Underground at night. With the ability to escape through drink, drugs, sex and more, the Underground held appeal for many of the city’s less savory types. James still struggles with memories he doesn’t want to remember, and ones he can’t.
Outside of the Underground, James found himself becoming more ruthless during his jobs, and Alessio’s ordered intimidation tactics. Frightened of who he was becoming, he knew he had to get out. When Jay was nearing 17 (1193) Alessio came to him with an order for a larger smuggling job. Alessio allocated money and resources to complete it, but seeing his chance, James instead took the money and fled north on a ship along the western coast.

Trump administration backs off plan requiring international students to take face-to-face classes (Washington Post) The Trump administration on Tuesday dropped its much-criticized plan to require international college students to leave the United States unless they are enrolled in the fall term in at least one face-to-face class. The abrupt reversal, disclosed in a federal court in Boston, came a little more than a week after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued an edict that stunned U.S. higher education leaders and students worldwide. Under the July 6 policy from ICE, international students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities for the fall semester faced a mandate to take at least one course in person. Those students, ICE said, “may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States.” That mandate posed a major obstacle to plans for online teaching and learning that colleges are developing in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology had sued to block the new policy. In a hearing in that case on Tuesday, held before U.S. District Judge Allison D. Burroughs, the judge announced that the schools and the federal government had reached an agreement that made the lawsuit moot. Separately, 20 state attorneys general had also challenged the guidance in court in recent days.
Patients are still delaying essential care out of fear of coronavirus (Washington Post) Jim Johnson was elated when his hip replacement, canceled in March along with other elective surgeries, finally was performed in May. For months, his pain had been so severe he couldn’t sleep, golf or do his job. Just a few weeks after the operation, he tossed his cane away. Hospitals and doctors practices across the country are hoping there are a lot more Jim Johnsons out there—patients willing to shake off fears about the coronavirus and come back for tests and treatments put on hold early in the pandemic. Yet persuading them to return for non-emergency care is a tricky message right now, with the virus slamming the South and West. In parts of Texas, Arizona, Florida and other states, elective procedures have been halted again. For some patients, the spike in infections is reigniting fears about catching the virus in a hospital or a doctor’s office. Doctors worry that could undermine their efforts to win people back, and lead to more lives being lost from other, often preventable causes, such as cancer and heart disease. Doctors say “elective procedures,” including for cancer, can’t be delayed indefinitely without ill effects. Hospitals, meanwhile, see orthopedic, cardiac and cancer surgeries as their key to survival after losing billions of dollars on the shutdown of lucrative procedures.
Global surge in coronavirus cases is being fed by the developing world—and the U.S. (Washington Post) When the United States began shutting down this spring, a virus that emerged months earlier as a mysterious outbreak in a Chinese provincial capital had infected a total of fewer than 200,000 people worldwide. So far this week, the planet has added an average of more than 200,000 cases every day. The novel coronavirus—once concentrated in specific cities or countries—has now crept into virtually every corner of the globe and is wreaking havoc in multiple major regions at once. But the impact is not being felt evenly. Poorer nations throughout Latin America, the Middle East, South Asia and Africa are bearing a growing share of the caseload, even as wealthier countries in Western Europe and East Asia enjoy a relative respite after having beaten back the worst effects through rigorously enforced lockdowns. And then there’s the United States, which leads the world in new cases and, as with many nations that possess far fewer resources, has shown no sign of being able to regain control.
Rules once lifted are reimposed to try to curb new outbreaks (AP) Virus restrictions once lifted are being reimposed, shutting businesses and curbing people’s social lives as communities try to curb a disease resurgence before it spins out of control. Residents of Australia’s second-largest city were warned on Wednesday to comply with lockdown regulations or face tougher restrictions. Melbourne’s 5 million people and part of the city’s semi-rural surroundings are a week into a new, six-week lockdown to contain a new outbreak there. Indian authorities will impose lockdowns in high-risk areas in nearly a dozen states as the nation’s coronavirus caseload approaches 1 million. Renewed restrictions took effect in Hong Kong on Wednesday, with public gatherings limited to four people, restaurants restricted to takeout after 6 p.m., and a one-week closure for gyms, karaoke bars, and selected other businesses. Masks also are mandated on public transit for the first time, with the non-compliant being fined. In the U.S., places including Washington state are delaying timetables for reopening their economies. Gov. Jay Inslee said counties will remain at their current stage of economic reopening at least until July 28.
Chaotic protests prompt soul-searching in Portland, Oregon (AP) Nearly two months of nightly protests that have devolved into violent clashes with police have prompted soul-searching in Portland, Oregon, a city that prides itself on its progressive reputation but is increasingly polarized over how to handle the unrest. Divisions have deepened among elected officials about the legitimacy of the more violent protests—striking at the heart of Portland’s identity as an ultraliberal haven where protest is seen as a badge of honor. Small groups of protesters have set fires, launched fireworks and sprayed graffiti on public buildings, including police precincts and the federal courthouse, leading to nearly nightly clashes with police who have used force that’s caused injuries. Similar unrest engulfed many U.S. cities when Floyd died after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed a knee to his neck on May 25. But in Portland, which is familiar ground for the loosely organized, far-left activists known as “antifa,” or anti-fascists, the protests never stopped. Lost in the debate are the downtown businesses racking up millions in property damage and lost sales and the voices of the hundreds of thousands of Portland residents who have stayed off the streets. “The impact is terrible because what people have seen on the TV ... has scared people who live outside the downtown. They feel it’s that way 24 hours a day,” said David Margulis, who said the protests have caused sales at his jewelry store to drop more than 50%. “I talk to people, on the phone, who tell me: ‘I don’t know if I’ll ever come downtown again.’”
Drug cartel ‘narco-antennas’ make life dangerous for Mexico’s cell tower repairmen (Reuters) The young technician shut off the electricity at a cellular tower in rural Mexico to begin some routine maintenance. Within 10 minutes, he had company: three armed men dressed in fatigues emblazoned with the logo of a major drug cartel. The traffickers had a particular interest in that tower, owned by Boston-based American Tower Corp, which rents space to carriers on its thousands of cellular sites in Mexico. The cartel had installed its own antennas on the structure to support their two-way radios, but the contractor had unwittingly blacked out the shadowy network. The visitors let him off with a warning. The contractor had disrupted a small link in a vast criminal network that spans much of Mexico. In addition to high-end encrypted cell phones and popular messaging apps, traffickers still rely heavily on two-way radios like the ones police and firefighters use to coordinate their teams on the ground, six law enforcement experts on both sides of the border told Reuters. Traffickers often erect their own radio antennas in rural areas. They also install so-called parasite antennas on existing cell towers, layering their criminal communications network on top of the official one. By piggybacking on telecom companies’ infrastructure, cartels save money and evade detection since their own towers are more easily spotted and torn down, law enforcement experts said.
Massive flooding in Southern China (Foreign Policy) Floods in Southern China are a recurring threat, but they are worse than ever this year—with some 38 million people evacuated and at least 141 dead. Rainfall has been double than the predicted amount in many places, threatening millions of lives and numerous important cultural sites. Thousands of soldiers have been dispatched to help shore up defenses against the rising tides. Water control has been a preoccupation for every Chinese ruler, and it will only worsen with climate change. China’s worst-known flooding, in 1931, killed over 2 million people.
South China Sea positions (Foreign Policy) The United States has dispatched two aircraft carriers—likely to be backed by British support—to the South China Sea, increasing the possibility of a regional flash point. It has also declared its formal alignment against China’s disputed claims for the first time, saying that it would use “all tools” to oppose them. In the last decade, China has made significant gains in the South China Sea, building a formidable infrastructure of artificial islands to act as bases while strengthening its naval militia. It is also increasingly aggressive in challenging rival claimants, including stalking Vietnamese oil ships and clashing with fishing boats. The U.S. move is long overdue, but it’s also risky: Xi stakes considerable credibility on the South China Sea claims, and there’s no likelihood of Beijing backing down. The pressure on Chinese officials and military personnel to demonstrate their nationalist enthusiasm is growing, increasing the chance of serious conflict similar to the deadly clash on the Indian border.
Trump signs Hong Kong sanctions law (Foreign Policy) On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump continued a week of moves against China by signing a new law that imposes sanctions on Chinese banks doing business with Chinese officials involved with new national security laws in Hong Kong. The president also signed an executive order, largely mirroring existing policy, that revokes the special treatment Hong Kong had received from the United States under the “One Country, Two Systems” doctrine.
Red alert in Tokyo (Reuters) Tokyo raised its coronavirus alert to the highest “red” level on Wednesday, alarmed by a recent spike in daily new cases to record highs, with Governor Yuriko Koike describing the situation in the Japanese capital as “rather severe”. The resurgence of the virus could add to the growing pressure on policymakers to shore up the world’s No. 3 economy, which analysts say is set to shrink at its fastest pace in decades this fiscal year due to the pandemic. “We are in a situation where we should issue warnings to citizens and businesses,” Koike told a press conference, urging residents to refrain from unnecessary travel.
Lebanon looks to China as US, Arabs refuse to help in crisis (AP) Facing a worsening economic crisis and with little chance of Western or oil-rich Arab countries providing assistance without substantial reforms, Lebanon’s cash-strapped government is looking east, hoping to secure investments from China that could bring relief. But help from Beijing risks alienating the United States, which has suggested such a move could come at the cost of Lebanese-U.S. ties. A tiny nation of 5 million on a strategic Mediterranean crossroads between Asia and Europe, Lebanon has long been a site where rivalries between Iran and Saudi Arabia have played out. Now, it’s becoming a focus of escalating tensions between China and the West. In recent months, the Lebanese pound has lost around 80% of its value against the dollar, prices have soared uncontrollably, and much of its middle class has been plunged into poverty. Talks with the International Monetary Fund for a bailout have faltered, and international donors have refused to unlock $11 billion pledged in 2018, pending major economic reforms and anti-corruption measures. Left with few choices, Prime Minister Hassan Diab’s government—supported by the Iran-backed Hezbollah and its allies—is seeking help from China.

Note: Wrote myself a GoT alternate ending because D&D really ruined an otherwise great show.
––––
The wreckage of a once prosperous land– now basking in rubble and dilapidated bricks of a magnificent keep, blinding smoke billowing heavily in the horizon —thinned out of sight and the magnificent silhouette of a great being soared amongst the clouds.
Black, hardened scales shone under the slowly fading light, its enormous webbed wings gushing great heaves of wind, disrupting formed clouds in its raging path. The vestiges of war still clung to its skin with weariness weighing down its formidable coat but a deep-seated anger fueled its resolve, channeling the fiery burn of ire to push its webbed wings afloat.
Unnaturally dark eyes bled its grief, mourning for the loss of one great love, shining ferociously under the waning sun, and painting a determination for the destination in mind.
Only one land took precedence in thought, the forgotten region of the fire gods, spoken in hushed whispers and believed to be folly amongst the people of the West lands. The island of the folks who practiced dark magic and alchemy, all in the name of a god who belies in the dusty books of mythos of old. The island in which he thought would bring back his home.
Fog started to wash the ocean below when the rubble of dilapidated towers came to view. The land seems to be awash in a fiery glow, great embers from raging infernos– contained yet still burning brightly and hotter than the sun god who was worshipped from the escaped land.
Red cloaked figures approached the shore and it took everything in Drogon not to release his own breath of raging fire. He swooped down to soar overhead, threatening the vile creatures who resembled the one who struck death on his home. He carefully laid his cargo on the sand, admiring the contrast between its fine white sand and the thick almost silvery strands of his mother's own. He eyed the cloaked figures with disdain, black jeweled eyes coated in burning resentment, hunching over the limp figure on the sand. He shrieked at anyone who dared take a step near his Queen, wisps of smoke escaping from his mouth.
One bravely chanced a few steps, only flinching slightly when he whirled on the figure and roared at it menacingly. But the cloaked one merely bowed in submission, presenting his Queen no harm. In its act of humility, he let it linger. The cloaked figure straightened from its pose but the hunch of its otherwise straight stature spoke its inferiority. Though, Drogon did not relent his watchful gaze, surveying every step and snarling at anyone within sight.
"We must keep her warm near the burning fire for the Lord of light will then bestow his grace of life for the unburnt Queen."
Blue eyes held beady black ones, a standoff pursued the moment but one held ferocious rage while the other only kind knowledge. Moments passed when the great beast stretched its enormous wings and roared angrily at the red cloaks.
But the rage came and went and when no more fury released its fire, the figures haunched their shoulders and took the Queen from her bed of sand. All the while, the magnificent beast of black watched with eyes of a smoldering hue. A delicate trust was established but everyone knew its fragility is meant to snap at any wrong cue.
They worked fast, not harried, but quick, lest they displease the god amongst mere mortals.
A fire borne by its eternal flame was enraged to consume a wider range in its path. Red, blues, and greens crackled angrily; hungry and insatiable.
A bed of wood is where his mother laid and it is no question what is about to be done. Yet, no one made a move to stop the ritual that is about to take place– not even her own protective son for everyone knew that the Queen who lays dead will not be burned by the hungry flames of the god's light.
The ritual took procession, and the hungry inferno consumed his Queen in its insatiable appetite while the red cloaked figures joined hands of burnt skins, offering words in a language no people from neither East nor West has been graced by.
The surge of heat coming off the flames intensified in its angry wake and the chanting of a language long forgotten grew to be more mutterings than spoken prayers. Unbeknownst to Drogon, he is taking witness to the same scene that astonished the spindly Dothraki slaves the day he and his brothers were born.
The same day fate has changed for the beggar Queen they laughed at in Astapor.
But the fire that kept raging, alive and furious and ready to consume anything in its path eventually dwindled into embers as the creeping light of the sun crawled across the narrow land.
And in her bed remained the dead Queen. Unburnt but covered in soot, without an ounce of life in her once kind entity. Wracked once again with unbridled sorrow, grief, and anger, the magnificent beast roared its fury to the skies, bellowing a harsh breath of fire significantly hotter than the one that was supposed to cure his mother.
The Lord of light is a false, cruel god.
The cry thundered the trees and rubbles of a once great foundation, seizing the hearts of the cloaked figures in terror at the sight of the displeased god before them. They had failed to bring the Queen to life, and their own lives is the payment for such arbitrary end.
Drogon reared his head, imploringly nudging his mother the way he did back at the land that killed her, his mind livid and thinking of burning the people who reside there in ashes.
But then, a slow exhalation of breath stopped him. Slowly, faint eyelids drew back and the ever magnificent and vibrant emerald jewels of his Queen's met his own black ones.
His mother is alive. The Unburnt Queen is alive.
And in the light of the day under the same blood red comet traversing through the firmament of blue marked Her Grace's fiery vengeance aborning, awaken from fire and blood.

A well rounded, fleshed out Poseidon
I always thought Poseidon didn’t fit right
-We knew very little about his wife compared to Hera or Persephone
-We knew basically nothing about where he lived
-Compared to Zeus and Hades huge importance, we didn’t really know why Poseidon mattered on the same level as them
-And nothing about his court
So I hoped to fill in those gaps! Mind you this is from a fiction point of view, but I did my best using existing ideas and gods
Domain
The sea, where all roads and water eventually leads. The beating heart at the center of all life. A vast domain with many moving parts, it’s a fully realized ecosystem that can never be slowed downed or poisoned with pollution, treachery, etc
Upon landing into the primordial body of Oceanus he pushed him back to the edge of the world, creating his own domain. As a treaty and sign of good faith, his daughter was to marry him. The Queen of the Nymphs, Amphitrite, the Pearl of the Ocean.
Amphitrite
Queen Amphitrite is a spitfire, moreso than even Persephone. Compared to the Golden and Iron Queens, she is the Queen of Pearls. Whereas Hera has attitude/admiration and Persephone authority/respect, Ampitrite has adoration and purity. She lacks Poseidon’s temper but counters it in sheer ability to not give a single fuck, unphased or amused at best by even the worst storms. In that she is the most whimsical and care free of the 3 Queens, almost to an Eris like point of refusing to do what anyone wants.
Goddess of loyalty, generosity, trade, rejuvenation, health, birth control, and purity. A goddess of calm waters, of bays and harbors to Poseidon’s storms and tides. Whereas Poseidon primarily rules the seas, she rules the Nymphs, a massive force of sea, river, well, and spring spirits. She is the eyes and ears of his kingdom and she won’t hesitate to call a tsunami in at disrespect
;D love ya
;) but don’t test me
As goddess of purity, humans can not get her pregnant, but she has other means of creating demigods if she wishes. The nymphs are known for wild sex acts and as queen she definitely partakes. She is a matriarch to all half nymphs
She and Poseidon are like the tides, they will always return to each other without shame
Court
Triton: Poseidon’s son and herald. God of trade routes, communications, and shepard of sailors. “Secretary of the sea” and responsible for communication of the court seeing as how they can be across vast distances.
Nereus, the Old Man of the Sea: god of opportunity and change, of adventure and wanderlust. A trickster shapeshifter sort of god who keeps the sea well worth it. Sunken treasure, keeper of legendary islands, perpetrator of rumors, etc
Achelous: god of freshwaters, shores, vitality, and bathing. He oversees the barriers between water and land and ensures they stay well kept. He is a cerberus like figure, guarding the way to Poseidon as well as ensuring the seas inhabitants remain loyal. Definition of watchful protector and paranoid bully
Ceto: goddess of the deep and keeper of monsters. Tamer of Scylla, Charybdis, etc. She is the Enforcer of the sea, punishing insolence and disrespect for natural law. She is the one that keeps mankind on land, lest they venture too far and overstay their welcome
Pontus: Son of Oceanus and father of all sea life. A tinkering sort of god who maintains the health of the ecosystem as well as concocts new and wondrous sea creatures. His wife, Ceto, makes sure his monsters stay well fed and taken care of
Home
In the distant sea of Thalassa there lies Neropoli, the home of Poseidon. The Shining City.
Near the edge of the world, where the great seas turn into the world encircling ocean, there is a city that spans islands. Upon the sharp cliffs there are docks and upon that shore lies sprawling structures. From atop the glistening waves the buildings descend into the depths, further and further, all the way down to the ocean’s floor. Spires and towers and great halls lie below the waves. Buildings of stone and silver, great halls carved from pearl, and statues made of sapphire and emerald.
Here resides the king and queen of the sea and with them all manners of spirits and creatures. The 3,000 naiads, the 3,000 potomoi, merfolk, the Hippocampi, and more
Notably non-sea folk are the Cyclops. The Elder Cyclops, the 3 brothers freed from Tartarus, were instrumental in the gods defeating the Titans. Each of the brothers offered their kind a reward to thank them for their aid.
Zeus offered them splendor on Olympus, where they may feast with the gods and craft with the lord of the forge, Hephaestus.
Hades, impunity. Never will a cyclops set foot in Tartarus again. They may also enter the Underworld freely if given prior notice.
Poseidon, filial honors. All would be as if his own blood. They may stay in his home as long as they like for they are all his kin.
The Great Well
A bronze well in Neropoli that goes to the bottom of the ocean, dredging up the cleanest, purest water. It can heal the sick, grant incredible powers, and raise the dead, but at a price. The power of the deep will pull down upon you, such is the law of the sea, there is always an exchange. A sacrifice must be made. The sick may find that their doctor has perished. The dead may find they can never return to land. There is always a curse to accompany the blessing.

I hope you enjoyed!

Clan Ton Theon, an Ancient lair of the Sunbeam Ruins, had thought they’d seen it all. They had survived two wars, made peace with aliens, gods and Shadelings and fought with others. They killed an Emperor and befriended another and even withstood the wrath of the Lightweaver herself.
Now they believed that they were safe, what more could possibly try to attack them? What more harm could come to the clan? They now had an Emperor and gods from another planet on their side. They had to be safe.
Another peaceful day passed, and their Emperor ally started to act strange. The massive three headed creature usually slumbered down shore from the clan near the docks, but now it was pacing in circles around the tower where most of Ton Theon resided. All three heads snarled, and the few patches of fur left on their faces stood on end.
“It’s going to kill us! This is it. We’re all dead. I knew it! I knew keeping that thing around was a bad idea!” Masika was always a nervous imperial and she had been jittery ever since the Emperor arrived “Nike, do something!”
The clan’s leader, Nike sighed “I’ll go get Wish.”
Masika watched the mirror slip away, barely able to control the rising panic within her.
***
“Goshawk? Budgie? Blackbird?” the mirror known as Wish addressed each of the Emperor heads. She had gained their respect and they only ever talked to her “What’s wrong?”
“We must leave Wish,” All three heads spoke at once.
“What? Why? I like it here!”
“It is not safe. Not anymore.”
“I don’t understand. Everything is fine!”
“You are not looking close enough then. We must leave. Leave before it gets worse.”
As the Emperor spoke the ground shook. Wish stumbled.
“An earthquake? That’s odd…”
“There. See? It has begun.”
Where there was once a tombstone with angel wings carved into it, was now a pit in the ground.
“Hey isn't that where Sepulchral was buried? The original Sepulchral. His first life?”
“What about me?” A white skydancer landed next to Wish.
“Your grave. It’s gone.”
Sepulchral winced. He didn’t like to be reminded that he died.
“Not gone. Awakened.” The Emperor said.
The ground rumbled again, and something began to emerge from the pit.
“Time to leave,” The Emperor scooped up Wish into its paw and placed her onto its back. She protested, but the Emperor had already begun to move away.
“Hey wait! Why’s the Emperor leaving?!” Nike was outside now “I thought we had a deal! I thought we were allies!”
“I guess it got spooked,” Sepulchral said “By well… Me.”
Climbing out of the pit was another white skydancer. He resembled Sepulchral in every way except he wore a black dress and his body moved stiff and unnatural. He was not rotted, but his skin clung to his body, and his eyes were gone.
“What? What’s happening? A little more description would be nice for your blind leader you know.” Nike huffed.
“Um well, there’s another me but as a mummy. And he’s walking toward us right now. And I’m kinda freaking out just a bit.”
The other Sepulchral stood up on his hind legs and unsheathed the sword that was buried with him.
“Oh. And now the mummy me is armed.” Sepulchral drew his own sword.
“Is he hostile? Do you think we can reason with him?”
“I doubt it. If that’s really my body from my previous life, then it’s a lifeless husk. It can’t have my soul when I have my soul.”
“Then let’s kill this thing,” Nike lashed her tail and bared her teeth “It’s quiet, and despite being dead it has a faint scent, so you’ll have to help me out here.”
“Got it.”
Sepulchral and Nike circled the mummy. Nike was behind it while Sepulchral was in front. He kept a careful watch on the creature’s movements and directed Nike into position.
“I’ll see if I can disarm it, while you try to take out it’s back legs. Its movement seems to be limited as it is and I doubt it can fly. We just need to take out its limbs and hopefully- we can neutralize it.” Sepulchral said.
“That’s assuming it doesn’t have any of your magical abilities.”
“My magic isn’t that powerful, and most of it is stored in my soul anyway. We should be fine.”
“I wouldn’t underestimate yourself Sep, you’re stronger than you think.”
“I appreciate that you think that Nike, but this thing isn’t me anyway. So we should be fine.”
The mummy took a sharp turn to the right and swung its sword in Nike’s direction.
“Nike jump!”
She jumped just in time for the sword to miss her.
“You jerk! Turn and face me!” Sepulchral snarled and the creature turned to face him again. As it moved, Nike attacked its legs, sweeping them out from under the creature. With it down on the ground Sepulchral rushed in and placed his foot on its neck and kicked the sword out of its grasp with his other leg.
“Well. That was easier than-” The ground shook again and the ground began to dissolve from underneath them. The mummy fell first and Sepulchral fell after him. Nike had managed to roll out of the way before she fell too.
“Sepulchral? Sep? You ok?” She carefully felt her way toward the edge of the new pit “No. No I’m not letting you die again. I’m not losing you again Sepulchral!”
“Nike I have dire news!” A brightly colored coatl landed next to his leader “And it looks like it’s related to these pits and earthquakes! I got a letter from a clan called Clan Analemma, they’re looking for these creatures, called Astrals. They can wield elemental abilities and it’s been suspected that an Earth one has found its way here.”
Nike took a deep breath, still trying to sense a response from Sepulchral from the pit “Thank you, Tona. Did this clan say how to stop this thing?”
Tona nervously tapped his claws on the parchment he held “Unfortunately no but… They are offering a reward for its capture. And it needs to be alive. Killing it will just force it to appear somewhere else.”
“Great. Tona assemble the clan in the lobby for a meeting. I’ll be there in a moment.”
“Of course, Nike.”
When she heard his footsteps fade Nike called Sepulchral’s name into the pit a few more times, before giving up and returning to the clan. Her heart pumped too quick and the voices of her clan seemed louder than usual.
Nike knew it was just anxiety, but she hated the feeling. She was not a nervous dragon, but she knew that Sepulchral, a dragon dear to her was in danger. She needed to stop this Astral as soon as possible. For Sepulchral’s sake.
***
Nike assembled two teams of dragons. One team would enter each pit and search for the Astral and Sepulchral. Once found, Hecate, who was one of the clan’s best mages, would be sent to contain the Astral.
In the first team was a little fae named Flare, a young grey coatl named Muerto, a bubbly pearlcatcher named Niossa, a somber nocturne named Sonder, and the clan’s best huntress Nieth the coatl. On the second team was Future a spunky tundra, Bonita a cheerful mirror, the clan’s founder an elderly mirror named Nightbane, Nike and her girlfriend a mirror named Morningmist. Outside of the pits was Hecate, with Bubonic a guardian and Isra an imperial to guard her in case the Astral tried to attack her. The rest of Clan Ton Theon’s fighting dragons were stationed within the clan to protect those who could not fight.
Nike’s team flew down the first pit, while the other team flew down the one Sepulchral disappeared in.
The ground began to shake again, which closed off the pit that the second team flew down, and trapped them in darkness.
“Well,” Sonder looked up at what was once the exit “That’s not good.”
“Really now?!” Muerto snapped “We’re trapped! ‘Not good’ is an understatement.”
“It’s ok!” Niossa chimed “Sonder’s an Earth dragon I’m sure she can-”
“I can’t,” Sonder cut her off “I don’t have any Elemental abilities. Never learned how to unlock them.”
“... Oh.”
“I can feel wind,” Neith said “So there has to be another opening somewhere. Everyone just stay calm.”
“Calm? Calm?! We’re now trapped underground with some thing out to get us, and we might lose Sepulchral again!” Muerto’s feathers poofed up.
“Maybe you shouldn’t have agreed to come down here if you would freak out.”
“I’m from the Underworld! I thought I’d be fine! But apparently not!” Black flames sparked from his feathers and instinctively every dragon took a step away from him.
“Muerto, you need to control your emotions. Remember those breathing exercises I showed you?” Flare carefully spoke up.
“Yeah I’d hate for us to all die because you couldn’t control those flames of yours,” Neith said.
“Shut up, or you’ll just make things worse,” Sonder growled to Neith.
“Fine,” Neith shut her mouth and Muerto’s flames died down “There. Now let me in the lead. I think I know the way out.”
***
Things were going a little better for Nike’s group. There was still sunlight to light their path from the entrance of the pit, but the further and further down they traveled the darker it became. Eventually Morningmist had to light a torch so the dragons could travel further. The darkness bothered everyone but Nike. She actually liked traveling through the tunnels at the bottom of the pit. She could easily tell where everyone was based on the sound of her companions’ footsteps.
“Whoa how pretty!” Bonita eventually spoke up.
“It’s like the whole cave is full of stars…” Future said.
“What do you see?’ Nike asked.
“Gemstones,” Nightbane answered “Hundreds of them.”
“Oooo so pretty!” Bonita reached out to touch one, but then pulled back with a yelp.
“Bonita! Are you ok?” Morningmist asked.
“Yeah I’m fine just… Feel fuzzy…”
Nike heard a thud as Bonita passed out. Nike placed a claw over Bonta’s chest and sighed when she felt a heartbeat.
“Ok everyone. Don’t touch the gemstones.”
Nightbane and Morningmist worked together to carry Bonita’s unconscious body. It wasn’t an easy task, Bonita was almost the same size as the other two mirrors.
The group continued in silence until they reached what appeared to be a dead end.
“Great,” Nightbane snorted “Now we have to go back to the gemstones.”
“No we don’t!” Future pushed at the tunnel wall “The dirt here is thin. I think we can dig through.”
“But what if that makes the tunnel collapse on us?” Morningmist asked.
“Don’t you want to find Sepulchral and stop this thing from hurting anyone else?” Future snapped back.
“It’s not going to collapse,” Nike said “I can feel that the rest of the tunnel is solid. There’s just some lose dirt we need to dig up and it leads to a larger chamber. We’re not letting this thing hurt anyone else.”
***
Neith turned another corner and she stopped in her tracks. Sonder who was right behind her crashed into her tail.
“Hey what’s the big de-” Sonder saw what made Neith stop. Blocking their way was another dragon. Glowing gemstones above him lit up his face “Sepulchral!” Sonder spread her wings to fly over Neith but Neith shoved Sonder back.
“Wait. That’s not Sepulchral.”
“It used to be,” Muerto looked over the heads of the dragons in front of him “Before Match killed him.”
“But now that particular body of his is just a mindless husk,” Sonder said “How do we get rid of it?” She turned to Muerto.
“How am I supposed to know?” he snapped.
“Because you’re a necromancer, and the one who buried him in the first place.”
“Yeah ok that’s true and all but this Astral’s magic is unfamiliar to me. I’ve never seen anything like it before. It’s nothing like my magic or yours or like anyone else’s here.”
“I’ve had enough talking,” Neith said “We don’t need to know about magic junk to get rid of this thing. We just need our claws,” She leaped and tackled the mummy. The force of her hitting the ground caused the tunnel to start to collapse.
Every dragon ducked for cover and the group ended up split into three different chambers. Sonder and Niossa were in the tunnel the group were in previously, Neith was in a dead end with the mummy and Muerto and Flare were in a new tunnel that had opened up.
“Muerto are you ok?” Niossa asked from behind the collapsed wall.
“Yeah I’m ok and I’m with Flare! How about you?”
“Sonder and I are good! And it sounds like Neith is still fighting the mummy.”
“Muerto you and Flare are going to have to go on ahead. Find Sep for us, ok?” Sonder said, her voice almost a whisper.
“Yeah. Yeah of course Sonder. We’ll find him, and if I see that Astral,” black flames appeared on Muerto’s back “I’ll burn it.”
***
Muerto and Flare felt like they were wandering for hours. It didn’t help that they were in silence the entire time. Although the two knew each other well, they couldn’t think of a single thing to say.
“Oh no,” Flare said and Muerto stopped.
“What? What’s wrong?”
“N-nothing! Everything’s fine!” Flare’s scales began to glow in the dark.
“Uh. You’re glowing, are you sure that’s fine?”
“I knew this was a bad idea with me coming down here… Now everyone is going to be in danger!”
“Flare what are you talking about? What’s going on?”
“Remember the night we left our old territory? Remember the fire?”
Muerto gulped. How could he forget that horrible night?
“What about it?”
“That was me. The fire. I started it,” A spark of flame come off of Flare and Muerto backed away.
“But you’re a Water dragon this shouldn't… Can you at least control it?”
Flare shook her head “I’m sorry… I thought… I thought this was over. I thought this wouldn’t happen again, now I’m going to catch these tunnels on fire and burn everyone alive!”
“Don’t say that maybe… you just need to take some deep breaths and the fire will go out? Like what you taught me?”
“Or maybe Anostra can help,” Muerto and Flare both turned to see a figure standing down the tunnel.
“Sepulchral?” The figure looked like Muerto’s skydancer friend, but after seeing his mummy double he couldn’t be too sure.
“Yeah it’s me, I’m alright. Anostra just wanted to talk.”
“Who’s that?” Muerto asked.
I’m the one you’re looking for~ The one Clan Analemma wants to lock away~
Muerto’s eyes widened.
“Voice in your head?” Sepulchral asked “Yeah that’s how she talks.”
“I don’t like this thing. Sepulchral where is it? We need to just capture it and send it away before it does anything else!”
“But she hasn’t hurt anyone! And… She promised me something important! I think we should listen to her.”
“She resurrected your dead body! And made it attack you, Nike, and now it’s attacked Neith!”
Child~ That was simply self defense~ I do not wish to Return to Anelemma~
“I don’t trust you!” Muerto barked to the air “Show yourself and get out of my head!”
Child~ You ran away from your own home didn’t you?~ You were a King by title, but a prisoner in reality~ Forced to abandon everything that made you a child~ Forced to watch over the dead~ Forced to fight amongst your own kind~ And even after everything you gave up for the Crown you failed to receive the respect you were hoping for~ You failed to receive your mother’s love~
Muerto growled “You know too much about me. I don’t like this.”
“Yeah I know it’s freaky how much she knew about me,” Sepulchral said “I think that’s just part of being an Astral. But she promised me a cure… to my curse. She said I won’t have to go blind!”
It’s true~ And I can cure you of your black blood and Flare of her fire~ Just trust me little child~ And you’ll never have another worry in the world~
“That sounds like too good of a deal. What to you expect in return?”
Just to be free~ Don’t let them lock me up again~ You remember how it felt to be in a cage~ You wouldn’t wish that upon anyone, now would you?~
“If it’s true that you can cure my flames then… do it! Please and hurry I don’t know how much longer I can hold them off! Cure my flames and prove you’re telling us the truth!” Flare gasped, now smoking as her scales turned into embers.
Very well~
A bright red ruby appeared on the side of the tunnel.
Touch it Exile~ Touch it and your body will never burst into flames again~
Flare reached out and touched the ruby. It began to glow as her body dimmed. She screamed and all of her flames were extinguished in an instant. Now her flames danced from inside of the gem. She gasped for breath on the ground, but otherwise appeared unhurt.
“You… You really did it. My fire is gone.”
And I can do the same for your black blood Muerto, and your curse that plagues your vision Sepulchral~ But only if you agree to keep Clan Anelemma away from me~
“I want to see you before I make my decision,” Muerto said.
Fine~
A dragon appeared in the middle of the cavern. She looked like a brown snapper.
Muerto looked from Flare to Sepulchral “Ok… I’m on board with this deal of yours.”
Excellent dear child~
The wall behind the Astral fell over and out piled Nike, Morningmist, Nightbane and Future.
“Sepulchral!” Morningmist shouted “We found him!”
“And that,” Nightbane snarled at the snapper “Must be the Astral!”
Indeed I am~ Congrats you found me~
“Good,” Nike said “Future, release the signal. We need Hecate now.”
“Wait!” Both Muerto and Sepulchral shouted.
“We’ve… made a deal with her,” Sepulchral said.
“You did what?”
“Nike, just listen to me… We need her,” Sepulchral said “She promised us… She promised me that she’d fix my vision! And she’d fix Muerto’s blood! She already lifted Flare’s curse! Anostra is willing to do all of this for us for the exchange of freedom.”
“I don’t know Sep… Sounds a little fishy to me. I don’t think we should trust this thing.”
“But you trust me, don’t you?”
“Yes Sep. You’re my friend and a good kid but… Are you sure?”
“I’ll swear on my life that this is a good idea.”
Nike flinched “Don’t do that. Not when we just got you back from death.”
“Ok sorry poor choice of words, but the feeling is still there. Nike please, Anostra has promised to help us as long as we let her hide here. Can you give her a chance?”
“I still don’t know… If we don’t return her we may chance at becoming enemies with this clan. We don’t need anymore enemies.”
“Let me write a letter to them then. I’ll explain everything.”
“... Fine. But you better be right about this. I’m putting a lot of my trust into you Sep.”
“Thank you Nike. Everything will turn out right. I promise.”
***
Every dragon made it out of the tunnels safely. Bonita eventually woke up, and Neith was uninjured from attacking the mummy. Anostra called the undead creature back deep within her tunnels.
Sepulchral sat down with a paper and quill and tapped his chin as to what he should write.
To Clan Anelemma,
We are happy to inform that we have found one of your Astrals, however we will not be returning her. We made an agreement with her. We will allow her freedom in exchange for her power. We have decided to inform you, so you would be warned if you try to take her by force. If your clan tries to take this Astral from us, we will be forced to attack.
We do not wish for another war, but we need this Astral’s power. Unless your clan can provide an alternative solution, the Astral known as Anostra will be under the protection of Clan Ton Theon and her power belongs to us.
Farewell,
Clan Ton Theon
It felt wrong to write such passive aggressive words. Normally Sepulchral would want peace at all costs. He wasn’t a violent dragon, but if Anostra was telling the truth and she really could cure him of the Curse that was destined to blind him, then he was willing to protect her.
He couldn’t risk such an opportunity slipping away from him.
(So I guess this is a ransom then?)
(Also some notes for anyone who’s familiar with my lore: This takes place after the Wish and Blue and Shade King arcs. Also Inkdrop, Hiraeth and Munin are currently away which is why they were not in this)

A Mollymawk is a genus of albatross...i honestly have no idea what that means, I am not a taxonomist, I just know it’s something birdy. And I can read wikipedia to get a feel for what they are culturally. Something something sailors and mariners (maybe that explains why he rooms with Fjordy our resident shady sailor)
Anyway, we’re here for the crunch. And admittedly, this character is one of the reasons I got into thinking about this series to begin with, since there has been discussion about how ...well, unimpactful Mollymauk has been in fights. Going to lay out a couple of my thoughts before we actually get into the mechanics.
[Also, edited one day after the post, before M. Mercer decided to whoop dee doo, it’s time to put an end to the naysayers and give the poor Ghostslayer some buffs. And here I was defending Molly as he was; oh well, gonna update the crunch]
First off, if you’re going to compare each character’s output with one another, there can only be one eventual winner and that’s no damn good for anyone. If you compare the options taken as compared to those available, then you’re going to be critiquing on choices and once again, De gustibus non est disputandum, so I’m not gonna go there.
So let’s take a step back and see what Molly has thus far presented himself as and is, from what we can see. I think first and foremost, Mollymauk Tealeaf is a carnie, possibly influenced a great deal by Taliesin Jaffe our pyramidal fey lord and saviour ‘s extensive carnival experience. I will admit, I have never met a carnie, or know what they actually do or are. But from my internet gleaning and perusing (and Talks Machina thank you Brian Cabbage head), I’ve come to think of them as style over substance, highly extroverted and verbose individuals. Competence is optional. Laughter is not. Which really makes for an interesting character, in D&D or real life, I would love to meet a carnie and talk about the meaning of life with them while being as drunk as a sailor on shore leave.
Anyway, back to Mollymauk, there is actually a very recent post on reddit on his actual performance in combat that paints him in a better light, and the usual reddit discussion shenanigans. The one part of that that shifted my view decisively, is the realization that dual wielding is an aesthetic. Molly isn’t a fighter; he isn’t a master swordsman whose blades are an extension of himself nor does he have an instinctive feel for moving his blades in a fashion to cause harm. His scimitars are made out of cheap carnival glass for god’s sake; it's a miracle they haven’t shattered yet. I get a sense that those blades were mostly for show, until they had to be more than that. Still, that isn’t the comfort zone of Molly, who would rather talk and charm his way out of a situation. Which is reflected in his repeated use of Charm Person, Enthrall, and the infamous Vicious Mockery.
So in my opinion, the combat style of Mollymauk reflects his partially revealed backstory. He wants nothing to do with his potentially violent past and is all in on his solely carnival memories. If he could choose, I think he would be a pacifist.
Nonetheless, this is D&D where unless you are an Oath of Redemption paladin, pacifism is not going to be all that attractive since there are so many things that want your hide. So violence it's going to be. With that in mind, that doesn’t always mean you leave behind what you are, going into combat. I can write a whole other series on the human behind the soldier, but that’s for another time, so I’ll just leave this quote from LotR here
“I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”                                                                                   -Faramir, The Two Towers
Right so, proper crunch time. Level 5 Tiefling (Devil Tongue Variant), Blood Hunter Order of the Ghostslayer.
Armaments: 2 Scimitars that do 1d6 + 3 (DEX mod) apiece, due to the Two-Weapon fighting style. Two attacks with the main weapon, and using a bonus action, can attack with the second scimitar, giving three strikes tops.
As a bloodhunter, one of the ways to increase your damage output is crimson rites to imbue your weapons with magical damage. In Molly’s case, he has Rite of Dawn and Frozen, to add d4 radiant or cold damage respectively. He will gain an additional option at Level 6, that’s just more versatility, but more importantly the damage die increases to d6 (which on average is worth 1 point more). Having 3 damage types is not really versatile, but not completely one dimensional either. Each rite comes at the cost of 1d4 HP deducted from the maximum that only recovers when the rite is deactivated (he isnt healed by that  d4 when max HP returns)
At the moment however, this makes his scimitars 1d6 +1d4 + 3 if activated. As many have pointed out, it takes 1 bonus action to activate each scimitar and Molly only has 1 bonus action each turn. Also, striking with the second scimitar takes a bonus action. It doesn’t help that many of the blood curse options, one of which we do not yet know when Molly leveled to 5, takes up a bonus action as well.
Speaking of blood curses, the one we do know Molly has used is Blood Curse of the Eyeless, which has saved the asses of many of the Nein by inflicting disadvantage on one or two of the incoming attacks. Being a reaction with 60 feet range has contributed greatly to its usability.
Molly’s archetype of Ghostslayer is a situational benefit that contributes a WIS mod to damage undead creatures (+3), at level 11 this will affect all creatures, but for now, only undead creatures will feel this dual wielding sword swinger’s wrath.
[7/6/18 11pm GMT+1 update: Crimson Rite die is now d6 at level 5 bloodhunter, instead of the d4 mentioned above. Also, the Ghostslayer archetype halves the damage suffered when activating Rite of the Dawn. Considering the damage taken also increased, this is a welcome change (though compared to previously, on average, Molly suffers .75 damage less (rounded up to 1) per activation of Rite of the Dawn, though 1 damage more when using Rite of the Frozen. This downside would have happened anyway at Level 6, but now there’s at least a slight improvement.
Also, as part of the update, Molly would have the option to switch out Blood Curse of the Eyeless. I suspect he would, based on more metagaming logic of a greater variety of playtesting. So might bring us up to 2 unknown blood curses. There are many many other fascinating options, and we might see them within 4 hours of this update]
A couple of things grant Molly some durability in combat. He took the Feat “Tough” which gives more HP when levelling, so at Level 5, he already has the highest HP total of the Nein. Also, his AC is listed as 15 which implies either studded leather or chain shirt. That’s probably on the lower end for the Nein, but sufficient for combat (i guess? depends on how hot Matt’s dice are). Finally, he purchased the Periapt of Wound Closure, which stabilizes him if he goes down. Also, when he rolls dice to regain HP, the results are doubled. (I’m unsure if it applies to healing done to him, or just healing he does on himself; if its the former I can already see the disaster tiefling combo come to life).
Edit: I’ve asked around and it appears to be specific to interactions involving self healing with hit dice (d10s for Molly) such as healer’s kit and short rests. Still the point stands.
Regardless, it allows Molly to function like a glass cannon, just like his swords. Yes he’d take hits, but he’ll return the favour, and the difference is that he won’t break, while the monster will eventually be shredded.
And we move onto the Tiefling part of Molly, which mechanically, has 3 spells. Vicious Mockery, Charm Person and Enthrall. All of them involve the target making a WIS save against Molly’s DC 11 [ 8 + 3 (proficiency) + 0(CHA mod)] and if succeeded, the spell does nothing (which has fuelled the perception that Molly hasn’t done much)
The first is a cantrip, while the latter 2 are level 2 spells that can only be cast once per long rest.
For vicious mockery, failing the WIS save causes the target to suffer 2d4 psychic DMG and suffer DISAD on its next attack roll, functioning as a second blood curse of the eyeless. Of note, this and Enthrall, are the only abilities of Molly at >30 to 60 feet ranges, unless he chooses to pick up a rock and throw it. Not very effective, but definitely worth a laugh.
For Charm Person, up to 2 humanoids can be affected. The WIS save is made with advantage if Molly or the Nein are fighting it (debatable if they are being attacked and not fighting back would negate this). Failing the WIS save imposes the “charmed” condition for one hour, unless the spell ends prematurely or they start harming the target. The charmed condition gives advantage to social interactions checks, which with Molly’s CHA mod of 0, would probably be very helpful. Also, for 1 hour, the target cannot attack Molly with weapons or harmful spells
Finally, Enthrall targets visible creatures of choice. The WIS save is made at advantage if in combat. Failing it gives the target disadvantage to WIS (perception) checks on any creature other than Molly for up to a minute. Once again, probably not a combat spell. But Taliesin did use it successfully against the alligators to distract them temporarily from Kiri, so who am I to judge?
The only thing I could think of for these two spells, is possibly to use them together. So while Molly, this colourful spray of bright clothes, tattoos and energy of a tiefling, charms and enthralls a high value target, the rest of the Nein slaughter their guards and entourage.
So there it is, Mollymauk Tealeaf, performer extraordinaire and occasional sword swinger! I personally think that if this is what Molly is, there could be advantages in going full carnie. Make use of that acrobatics proficiency to climb the head of a giant, wield a scimitar in your tail with that sleight of hand +6, hell juggle swords in combat to look threatening and maybe force a WIS save or two to take the heat off of others. The options are endless outside of the book rules and it is up to Taliesin Jaffe to play out this disaster of a tiefling. Hopefully, Matt is kind in these rulings, to reward good RP which is what everyone is here for.
Fortunately, Taliesin is a very experienced D&D player as demonstrated by his extensive knowledge of other character’s abilities (I think he, Matt and Liam together could probably recite half the rulebook and write out the other half by instinct). If I had to make one mechanical optimization choice, for the next ASI, take a +1 to DEX and +1 to CHA to round that score up and get that bonus. It’s also an upgrade without drastically altering the RP choices that can be made.
Thank you everyone who’s reading and liking this series! It’s almost thursday and I’m pretty excited about the next episode like I always am. Maybe even more so now I’ve got a blog. Might liveblog it idk it’s at like 3am in UK when it goes live so depends on my sloppy schedule.

Teilo Embry Aisling | Twenty Four;  Survivor
House: Brink Security Class: 1 Status: Uninfected Alignment: New Age Rebels Name Pronunciation: T-eh-lo / Ash-ling
History
The Aisling family was an Ivy league legacy and a name spoken among strangers. Teilo Embry was the proverbial middle child, and with the twins born before him, he had not one, but two quintessential standards to model himself after—more if one counted his father, and his father before him.
Teilo’s father was a prosecutor in criminal law for many years, and the Aislings came from a long line of Yale alumni. Now, Grigor Aisling was also a professor at the university, and his notoriety on campus was regarded with both intimidation and awe. Naturally, Yale is where Teilo’s older brother, Arlo, attended. A high achiever in athletics as well as his studies, Arlo rowed for the Yale Heavyweight Crew and was majoring in Medicine.
Arlo’s twin, Nesta, went North, instead, pursuing her BFA at Concordia, in Montreal. She’d said she’d wanted to go for the art and culture that the famous city was known to have, but Teilo was fairly sure she’d just wanted to avoid having her parents breathing down her neck. He couldn’t blame her for that, he supposed, but getting away from his parents wasn’t the reason he accepted Harvard’s offer, rather than that of Yale. His decision to break away from tradition was more built on a desire to escape his predetermined legacy, rather than his parents themselves. He wanted his accomplishments to be his own, and to avoid any postulation that he was receiving special treatment.
In fact, he was somewhat sullen to leave his mother’s devoted coddling behind. He even often missed his father’s dry and drawling jokes, his impossible dedication to being the cleverest man in the room. Which happened to be a difficult task ‘round a table of over-achievers. Needless to say, family dinners were less like a meal and more like a round of double jeopardy.
And then there was Brenin—Teilo’s younger brother, and the youngest of the family of four kids. Brenin was easily the quietest of the lot of them, but perhaps not the softest. Three years junior to Teilo, he had his sights set on studying anthropology, perhaps with a minor in linguistics. With each of his siblings, Teilo had a dramatically different relationship. He shared his creative nostalgia side with his sister, his almost boyish sense of humour with Brenin. But it was Arlo he looked up to. Arlo, who would challenge him to the end of days with a guileless battle of wits. Arlo, who inspired Teilo’s work ethic, his commitment to making something of himself.
In the September of his first year at Harvard, the smell of cedarwood and lemongrass greeting him in the main hall like a long-awaited welcome home, he knew this would be the beginning of the best years of his life. Anticipated six long years of sweat, blood and tears and was looking forward to every, agonizing second of it.
Unfortunately, as it would turn out, he was barely fated to half that. After spending two years on his undergraduate studies, he was midway through his first year as a graduate student, when best laid plans became of no consequence.
On the far East Coast of the states, Harvard and the surrounding areas faced mostly secondary debris falling during D-Day. Damage to the city was palpable and chaotic, of course, but over the years, Harvard and other high profile institutions had become relatively equipped for emergency procedures. Bunkers provided shelter during the worst of the falling, and its high towers were a refuge in waiting out the initial floods of first impact.
But as a campus as huge as Harvard, with so much security and resources all in one place, it quickly became the long-term refuge of survivors within a five mile radius. It also became the second Colony to rise, (at least as far as official documentation was concerned), shortly after Colony 1, at MIT—a facility so equipped with labs and scientific resources that within the first year post D-Day, it became a housing unit for much of what would eventually become the intensive research and study of the new world’s evolutions.
For a few months, there was no way to be sure what had happened to his family, but launching himself into an unpredictable landscape to embark on a blind hunt for them, seemed too illogical and irresponsible for Teilo to justify. It wasn’t that he wasn’t willing to risk himself, but logically and mathematically speaking, keeping where he was, with a connection to some facet of civilization, was his best bet at finding them.
As it would turn out, when contact was reestablished with pockets of survivors in surrounding areas, Teilo found out that his sister, Nesta, was indeed alive, but was having issues finding means of crossing the border and travelling particularly treacherous impact damage, especially by herself. His parents, and his brothers, who were still back in Connecticut, had also survived but were living among other clans. At the time, interstate transportation wasn’t especially plausible, nor was it particularly safe. And so the Aisling family, having at least confirmed each other’s safety, resigned to their continued separation for the time being. With the exception of Arlo, who left New Haven as soon as he could, to try to get to Nesta in Montreal, since she couldn’t get to them.
The thing about residing in Harvard after the apocalypse was that after a few years, for Teilo and other students like him, life arguably wasn’t that different from what it had been before. Or at least, it had an illusion of consistency—a kind of comfort in the known that survivors could cling to for at least some semblance of stability and solace. Of course, everything had changed about the world, how they could navigate through it, and what their places in it were. But as far as their day to day surroundings, the lives of Teilo and his fellow ivy league students, were disrupted on less absolute terms. Unlike people in private residential homes, campus residents were the safest remaining where they were. Of course, only 50-60% of the campus remained safely habitable but that being said, they had access to state of the art security—whatever the depleted resources could still power, that is—and could press on into the darker days with a body of people that had formed long before that fateful day in 2157.
This is how one of the largest Colonies in North America would see its beginning. Harvard’s Colony 2 formed naturally, and its citizens were less like fish washed up on strange shores, but rather bees imprisoned to a hive. They had a tendency to like to look busy, feel busy, be busy. Of course, as a population of high achieving academics, this wasn’t exactly a surprise. And so Teilo was not alone in his restlessness, nor in his desperation to cling to his status as a law student, maybe one day even lawyer—if there was ever again a law to protect.
Teilo Today
When the NWRF rose, they did so out of Colony 1—the first Colony to see the likes of the Reformist regime, and the place that would soon become the home to the NWRF Headquarters. But in the beginning, the NWRF’s influence was slow, patient and mostly unthreatening. It was something being talked about in gossip, but never got enough ground for it to be cause for concern. No one expected it to have the surge in power that it did.
As an Uninfected, Teilo was hardly affected by these rising rumours, but after the Second Falling, when his best friend Sid became one of the newly Infected, the whispers were hitting closer to home. As the NWRF grew, and their impending government rise became a very real inevitability, Teilo and Sid knew it would soon become a matter of fight or flight. If Teilo had only had himself to worry about, he might have stayed. Tried to reconnect with his family. But with Sid as an Telekinetic, the stakes were higher. Teilo wasn’t willing to risk his best friend’s safety and so together, they chose flight.
They left in the middle of the night, trading stolen resources from Harvard (food, technology, Power chips, Echo Chips) to buy their way onto a Merchant ship heading East across the Atlantic. Their hope was that the Reformists would become a thing of the Americas, but that the status divide wouldn’t manifest the same way in other countries, cultures. Teilo knew better than anyone that American culture had a deeply sutured superiority complex.
Leaving Harvard was more difficult for Teilo than he cared to admit, even to himself. He took nearly everything with him, much to Sid’s dismay. Nearly all of his survived belongings—which was basically everything. That which he did have to part with, he made a gigantic fuss about. Because Teilo had always been nostalgic, and was raised material; he had an immeasurable affinity for his tailored suits, fine leather Oxfords, and cap toe boots. He also had a collection of vintage casette tapes he couldn’t bring himself to part with, and truck loads of hardcover books he’d read and reread a hundred times—many of which he’d written notes in the margins. And then there was his Star Wars paraphernalia, because beyond being a bookworm and a academic addict, he was a bit of a closeted nerd.
And these things of his, they were his identity. They were the meat from whence he came. They reminded him of home, of his mother, of his dreams and ambitions—and they were what made him who he was, and as far as he was concerned, he didn’t give a fuck if the world had ended. So long as he was still here, these things were his and they were allowed to still matter to him. He was still allowed to give a shit about this stuff, even though most people seemed to disagree.
Sid, unfortunately, was both a victim and a reluctant supporter to this. It was one of Teilo’s many frustrating idiosyncrasies, and arguably part of his charm. So despite how inconvenient (to put it lightly) it was to lug around three suitcases, two mailbags and a briefcase on their trip to God knew where, Sid seemed to put up with it, for the most part, for which Teilo appreciated him all the more. Of course, he’d pressured Teilo to leave more behind, and there were times Teilo was sure Sid was finding ways to sell off some of Teilo’s books from under his nose in order to lighten the load, but otherwise he was probably more patient with Teilo than he deserved.
It had been two months of travelling by the time they arrived at Colony 22, and most of that had been aboard the crowded lower decks of Merchant ships, making friends with the rodents and gambling with wastelanders and vagabonds. Unfortunately, for these two Ivy League boys, however, their arrival at Colony 22 was met with the ugly discovery that though they had succeeded in putting thousands of miles between themselves and NWRF Headquarters, the Reformists had beat them to the punch. NWRF Reps were already in place at Colony 22, and in the time it’d taken Teilo and Sid to get there, the purging of the wastelands had begun, something which hadn’t even started when they’d left Harvard.
As a young man who spent so much of his life committed to the law and to justice, Teilo doesn’t feel he can just stand by and watch a corrupt government disregard people’s rights. The law and the state may be in disarray since D-Day, but basic human rights remain in tact. As far as he’s concerned, someone needs to be doing something about protecting those rights—regardless of status. The Radical Movement, however, is not Teilo’s idea of progress. Their actions are impetuous, irrational and impulsive—none of which will earn them any long term success. And the Rebels? Well, they are even more infuriating. Though their hearts are arguably in the right place, Switzerland never saved any lives. The time is now and the conflict is real and Teilo believes that the New Age Rebels need to have a stronger voice, need to step up and take responsibility and contribute to this fight for justice by being active participants, rather passively preaching peace but doing nothing to provoke change.
Teilo still thinks about his family regularly, and does what he can to keep in touch. He feels the most angst about being apart from his mother, and the most guilt about having left Brenin behind. Arlo may have been Teilo’s role model, but Teilo had been Brenin’s. He misses their time together, as infrequent as it had been after he’d gone to Harvard.

Hidden Toronto: a growing list of the city’s best-kept secrets
Tumblr media
RUPTUREDS OF CREATIVITY MAKE A CITY WORTH RESIDING IN
" I reside in Toronto," starts the commentary of the Oscar-winning brief Ryan, "a city in Canada where I see way a lot of shades of grey for my own good health."
It can be tough to reside in a place whose very appearances are a continuous reminder of our failure to do much better. Where a lot of streetscapes are specified by indifferent condos as well as the same handful of financial institutions and also pharmacies at their bases. Where cuts to transit make rush hour an increasingly derogatory experience yet also theoretical troubles to drivers are considered undesirable. Where we're told by our politicians that good points are past us which the "TORONTO" check in Nathan Phillips Square is unworthy of even the moderate funds required to keep it around for another year.
Where public investment is dealt with as a benefit and not a right, to be administered on the basis of political efficiency rather than need.
Thankfully, there are the buttons.
In each of the cellar restrooms at Otto's Berlin Döner in Kensington Market is a switch on the wall. Oversized and also unmissable but entirely unmarked, there is no demand to press them, yet you can. And also in the midst of the sweltering heat of August or the unlimited winter season of March, you will certainly be delighted.
Easter eggs like these are what make the city-- any type of city-- worth living in. They are the bursts of creativity or charm, oddness or fancifulness, that make it possible to get through the days during the greyer months when doing so would otherwise be an obstacle. Occasionally they are destinations, but often they are unforeseen. They are physical signs that a person, in a remote or very recent history, made the effort to care, to add something to the city material that would intangibly enhance the experience of it.
The Peter Frying pan statuary in Glenn Gould Park, as an example, is not special. It is one of 6 the same copies of Sir George Frampton's original in London's Kensington Gardens. It is not even the just one of its kind in Canada.
Yet with its 9 fairies, seven computer mice, 5 bunnies, 3 birds and one each of a snail, squirrel, salamander and frog-- all circling Peter as well as Wendy-- it brings a sprinkle of childish goal to the northwest corner of Opportunity and St. Clair.
There is no naturally sensible reason it should exist the park's pianist namesake had not been also born when it was installed. That it was donated by something called the College Heights' Association "to the spirit of children at play" is a peculiarity of background, and that it lingers to the present is a strange present.
The value of a city is gauged, partly, by its capability to provide the unforeseen and to emerge as an area where such shocks are welcomed.
It has to do with the city as source of nourishment as well as stimulation-- the city as play area, the city as theme park, the city as location that encourages exploration. The city as a home that makes you grateful to receive its prizes.
In the late 2000s, I belonged to the Toronto Psychogeography Society, which is a fancy means of stating I took place regular night strolls normally arranged by Spacing editor Shawn Micallef. The trips typically came under two categories: venturing with parts of the city that we 'd never ever or else experience walking, or wandering through locations we thought about familiar but that still had keys to reveal.
There was likewise a third sort of walk: ones that travelled via areas well known to simply one of us. At that time, I was dealing with my family at Yonge and York Mills, a location I frowned at for its distinct lack of points. On the second coldest evening of the wintertime, the group came up to my location, and we headed off via the vacant Don Valley Golf links.
Held in the air by looming concrete assistances, the 401 crosses the gorge there using a substantial bridge that rises over the greens. We climbed up the high hillside at the west side of the bridge up until we discovered ourselves adjacent to the highway, at the protected tip of a fork in the roadway.
Cars and trucks zoomed past on both sides.
I had known about the bridge and also the remarkable industrial-ruin feeling of its base. I didn't know you might securely come eye to eye with the freeway, staring down traffic on one of the busiest paths on the planet. I had never done anything like it in the past.
In that moment, Toronto in February was okay. -- Jonathan Goldsbie
HISTORIC LANDMARKS As Well As ARCHITECTURE
1. THE OCULUS PAVILION, SOUTH HUMBER PARK
Nearly 60 years after it was up to Planet near the south end of the Humber bike route, you'll discover a recklessness with an useful feature: a flying saucer affixed to a stone-faced public washroom. Engineer Alan Crossley's playful mid-century modernist masterpiece is a miserable things today. Grubby, disregarded, labelled with graffiti as well as a lot in need of a cleanup, it was just recently included in Architectural Conservancy Ontario's (ACO) list of structures in jeopardy. ACO states a plan to destroy the washroom (it's attracting what local councillor Justin Di Ciano refers to as "illicit deals and behaviour") and wrap the steel blog posts with stone from the restroom walls will certainly "weaken its building elegance." That strategy is being re-evaluated thanks to a campaign led by ACO head of state Catherine Nasmith as well as a change.org petition introduced by Stephanie Mah of ACO's NextGen. Sign the petition and also check out the Oculus. Admire its stylish asymmetry, examination the echo, then lie on your back and search for into its eye to the skies as well as marvel.
2. COMMERCE COURT NORTH TOWER, 25 KING W
This 34-storey limestone standard, part of the four-building facility that supports the city's monetary district, was the highest structure in the British Empire when it was finished in 1931. But the gold-coffered ceiling and art deco designing made it a masterpiece in its time and currently a treasured heritage building.
3. GIBRALTAR FACTOR BEACH AND LIGHTHOUSE, CENTRE ISLAND
Tiny as well as secluded, Gibraltar Factor Beach has a witchy ambiance. Possibly it's the huge desire catchers in the trees or due to the fact that it's beside Toronto's earliest (as well as spookiest) spots, the nearby Gibraltar Factor Lighthouse. Integrated in 1808, its original keeper, John Paul Radelmüller, was killed on a chilly evening in January 1815. Tale has it he was tossed from the top of the lighthouse by soldiers from Ft York which his ghost is still looking for his body. The tale grew in appeal following the exploration of parts of a human skeleton some years later on. Well worth seeing: Michael Davey's turning Rogue Wave art setup of materials washed up on the shore, in particular niches in the structure wall surface at the western side of Gibraltar Point.
4. HUMBER BAY ARCH BRIDGE, MARTIN GOODMAN TRAIL
This bridge goes by several names, yet what we can agree on is that it is among Toronto's the majority of lovely. Developed by Montgomery Sisam Architects and also opened up in 1996, the cycle- and also pedestrian-only bridge across the mouth of the Humber River belongs to the Martin Goodman Route and also connects the eastern as well as western halves of Humber Bay Park. Its dual white arcs and also symmetrical layout were influenced by "an abstracted version of the Thunderbird, an Aboriginal icon of the Ojibways, that inhabited the website for almost 200 years." The majority of spectacular sight: when getting in and also leaving on either side.
5. DAVID DUNLAP OBSERVATORY, 123 HILLSVIEW, RICHMOND HILL
In 1921, Clarence Incantation, head of state of the Royal Astronomical Culture of Canada, gave a lecture about a comet. In his audience, mining executive David Dunlap was captivated. He passed away 3 years later, but his widow, Jessie Dunlap, supplied to finance the construction of an observatory that would certainly contain the second-largest astronomical telescope on the planet. In 1971, Tom Bolton measured wobbles in the orbit of a celebrity as it circled around an invisible X-ray-emitting things so large that it had to be a great void: Cygnus X-1, the initial to be validated by monitoring. In 2009 the observatory was acquired by the Royal Astronomical Culture of Canada. Earnings from the sale of its land financed the founding of U of T's Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics. Eighty-one years after it initially saw light, the observatory continues to influence astronomers as well as hundreds of visitors. Interested? Call the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. You will not discover a great void, however you will see stars-- and also much more.
6. AGA KHAN PARK AND ALSO MUSEUM, 77 WYNFORD
The World's society and also film critic, Kate Taylor, wrote in Might 2015 that Aga Khan Park, part of the complex that includes the Aga Khan Museum as well as Toronto Ismaili Centre, "births most of the features of a white elephant." She meant that figuratively, of course, explaining the "lengthy trip from downtown Toronto" as well as other downsides (e.g., scarce parking) of its location alongside the DVP north of Eglinton. Certainly, the 6.8-hectare park ignores Don Mills from a lofty perch, and as a social location it aspires to even higher objectives-- namely, "to urge intercultural discussion and also exchange ... in a time when the globe of Islam and the Western globe requirement to collaborate a lot more properly at constructing good understanding." Aga Khan Park has swiftly come to be a popular landmark.
7. HILL CHURCH, OLD FINCH OPPORTUNITY As Well As REESOR
Records of weird sounds and also "screams" (the ghost of a young girl killed at Old Finch bridge in the future, or pets at the close-by Toronto Zoo?) remain to swirl around this 1877 Methodist church and also cemetery in a remote wooded edge of the Rouge Valley.
8. SCARBOROUGH CIVIC CENTRE, 150 BOROUGH
Anchored by Moriyama's Kubrick-esque space ship, this ode to Scarborough's long-deferred huge desires is entering into its own as an individuals put with the addition of a new public library, the first contribution to the district in 25 years. Great diversion: the waterfall (when it's working) ranging from inside the Civic Centre to a wading pool. Fascinating sidelight: Swedish carver Carl Milles's The Hand Of God, committed to former Scarborough mayor Albert Campbell, protrudes from the orchard nearby.

A local’s pick of the top 10 luxury wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontaria, Canada
As a local resident of Niagara, it is of upmost convenience that I am a wine lover; in the Niagara Region of Ontario, Canada there are approximately 100 wineries! As a luxury travel blogger I always want to know the best locations to suit my niche and since I live here and know what I love, why not share it with the world? We actually have a couple of areas that are very close together for the majority of our wineries; for today’s blog I am going to focus on the Niagara-on-the-Lake area specifically.
First off, I should give you a bit of information on our area; we are known all over the world for the iconic Niagara Falls of course and people always recognize exactly the location when you mention the famous and of course spectacular waterfalls in my hometown. But did you also know that we are one of the world’s best wine makers? Unfortunately we are not well known in the international wine market as our wines do not get shipped past Canadian borders for the most part. However, if you get the chance; you should definitely come and try our award winning wines.
So what is the reason we make such fabulous wines? I am glad you asked; this area is bordered by Lake Ontario and the Niagara River, our climate is moderated and temperatures are generally warmer so that grapes ripen very well. An earlier Spring means our grapes have a longer growing season, resulting in ripeness at harvest and better depth of flavour in our wines. Warm days and cool nights result in wines that have a balance of ripe fruit and acidity, making them excellent companions to food.
Now I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the wine that we are most famous for, and that is our world famous Icewine. Have you ever thought about doing a winter cold weather vacation and are a winery lover? Winter in Niagara is Icewine Festival time and a unique experience for sure; so many events are hosted surrounding our Icewine celebrations for an entire month, I promise you will not be bored. Do you know what Icewine is? Icewine is a sweet wine, usually served with dessert, that is made from frozen grapes; it is very expensive because of the process. The grapes must be picked at the exact right temperature conditions; when the temperature reaches -8 Celsius, (about 20 Fahrenheit), the grapes are hand picked or shaken from the vines. It is not uncommon for this to take place in the middle of the night! The grapes are then pressed when they are still cold, and it takes a lot of grapes to produce even one bottle, which is why a bottle comes with a hefty price tag.
So now that you know all about our wine region and are dying to visit I will share with you my picks for the most luxurious and elegant wineries located in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

This property also hosts an incredible restaurant with wine pairings and fabulous cuisine and in season you can even have a seat in the Wine Garden featuring the beautiful Vineyard Views.
Tumblr media
10. Inniskillin Wines
The final winery on my list is Inniskillin, it is Canada’s original Estate Winery, and has been committed to producing premium wines from the best quality grapes for over 40 years. The first winery to receive a winery license after prohibition and was instrumental in developing Canada’s VQA system. At this Winery you will enjoy an idyllic view of the Niagara Escarpment while sipping on your wine and make sure you try the Icewine at this location; it is known to be one of the very best.
Tumblr media
So that sums up my picks; I hope that you were able to use some of my experience as a local to pick your future itinerary and perhaps I have inspired you to plan a future trip to visit our beautiful wine country yourself!
