Egypt Suffers Worst Attack as 235 Killed in Mosque Assault
Militants armed with guns and explosives stormed a crowded mosque in Egypt’s restive northern Sinai on Friday, killing at least 235 people and wounding 109 others in the deadliest single attack in the country in recent memory.
The scale of the assault and the choice of target -- people gathered for Friday prayers at a mosque frequented by Sufi Muslims -- stunned the nation, drew international condemnation and triggered air raids by Egypt’s military. Attacks on mosques are rare in Egypt, but Sufis are considered heretics by jihadist movements such as Islamic State.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which took place west of the seaside city of Arish. But the Sinai Peninsula, a triangular piece of land bordering Israel, the Gaza Strip and the Suez Canal, has been the main battleground in the government’s fight against local militants who’ve declared allegiance to Islamic State. Islamic State-Sinai Province has killed hundreds of police and soldiers in recent years. Over the past 12 months, it has turned its guns increasingly on civilians, with attacks on churches packed for Christmas and Easter prayers, and now on Muslim worshipers.
“This is a shift in the tactics of the terrorists,” said Hossam El-Rifai, a member of parliament for northern Sinai. “An attack on civilians at Friday prayers is not something we have been used to seeing.”
‘Brutal Force’
While the violence isn’t seen as threatening the stability of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s government, it has devastated the tourist industry, a vital pillar of an economy that’s struggling back to life after years of political upheaval.
El-Sisi made a televised statement vowing to avenge the dead and restore stability. He also said that those who supported, financed or incited the attack would face justice. “We will respond to this act with brutal force,” El-Sisi said.
Overnight, the army said it launched airstrikes that destroyed some of the vehicles used by the attackers as well as hitting jihadist hideouts containing weapons and ammunition stores. The armed forces are continuing to comb the area, according to a statement on the army’s Facebook page.
The attack is the biggest of its kind in recent memory. The last comparable assault took place in 2015, when the local Islamic State affiliate bombed a Russian passenger plane carrying holidaymakers from the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh, killing 224 people.
‘Horrible and Cowardly’
The militants have waged a campaign against Coptic Christians that saw most of that community flee northern Sinai earlier this year. Violence has spilled over to major cities like Cairo and Alexandria too, with attacks on churches.
U.S. President Donald Trump called the attack “horrible and cowardly” in a Twitter posting and later called El-Sisi to offer condolences.
“This represents the scary prospect that the list of targets they are willing to pursue is growing,” said Timothy Kaldas, non-resident fellow at the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy. “It is hard to know, however, if they were targeted because they were Sufis or because they were perceived to be collaborating with the government.”
As prayers were finishing up on Friday, militants in four vehicles drove up to the Rawda mosque, set off an improvised explosive device outside the building and opened fire on people praying inside and those that sought to flee, a senior security official based in north Sinai said. Locals took up weapons to help thwart the attackers, the official said.
Roads Blocked
The suspects fled as security forces arrived, but not before setting vehicles on fire and blocking the road to prevent survivors from fleeing and slow the arrival of emergency services. Foreign media access to northern Sinai is restricted, but state television showed orange ambulances lined up and rescue workers tending to casualties on stretchers. Other images showed dead bodies inside the mosque, covered in blankets.
The mosque is known to be frequented by Sufis, who adhere to a mystical variant of Islam. It’s also on the main highway that runs parallel to the Mediterranean coast toward the Gaza Strip, so it draws in passers-by and local residents, particularly for Friday prayers.
The Sinai jihadists have attacked Sufi shrines with increasing frequency over the past year and have kidnapped and killed Sufi preachers, posting images of the executions online. Islamic State-Sinai Province has issued videos and statements vowing to eradicate Sufis, accusing them of apostasy.
El-Sisi’s Credibility
A former army chief, El-Sisi overthrew President Mohammed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in mid-2013 following mass protests against his one-year rule. He went on to win a presidential election on a promise to crush Islamist groups. The Brotherhood has since been outlawed, with thousands of its members jailed or exiled, while El-Sisi has stepped up war on jihadist groups in northern Sinai.
The president said Egypt would not back down from that policy after the attack. “Egypt is facing terrorism on behalf of the entire region and the aim behind what is happening is to stop us from confronting terrorism,” he said.
Egypt has helped broker a reconciliation between Palestinian factions and sought the help of Hamas to control the movement of militants and weapons between Gaza and Sinai. It’s also joined a Saudi-led effort to isolate Qatar, partly on the grounds of its alleged support for Islamist groups.
Plans to open the Gaza border for a few days this week were postponed after the attack and raised broader questions about the effectiveness of El-Sisi’s security strategy.
“The attack will, over the medium-term, damage El-Sisi’s credibility as the figure that can protect Egypt, particularly if the security situation does not markedly improve,” Hani Sabra of political risk analyst Alef Advisory said in a note. “And it probably won’t.”

‘Potentially catastrophic’ Hurricane Irma nears eastern Caribbean islands
(CNN)As Floridians cleared supermarkets of bottled water and emptied gas pumps, people in the northeastern Caribbean were making last minute-preparations before powerful Hurricane Irma hit their islands.
Late Tuesday, the massive Category 5 storm was almost upon islands like Antigua and Barbuda with near-record 185 mph sustained winds. In its 11 p.m. ET advisory, the US National Hurricane Center said the eye of the hurricane was 50 miles from the two islands.
The center of the storm was moving to the west-northwest at 15 mph.
The hurricane center said the extremely dangerous core of Irma would hit the northern Leeward Islands -- which include Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Anguilla -- Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
It's too early to tell whether the storm will make landfall on the US mainland, but forecasts show it could turn toward Florida over the weekend.
Forecasters' most immediate concerns are for the people of the northeastern Caribbean, the hurricane center's Michael Brennan said.
"Anguilla, all the way toward (Antigua and) Barbuda, all the way up even toward the British Virgin Islands (are) in grave danger of an eye wall hit at (at least) 150 mph -- that devastates the island, no matter what island it is," CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said Tuesday.
Those islands are under hurricane warnings, as are Puerto Rico, the US and British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Martin/St. Maarten, and St. Barts.
One Twitter user in St. Barts posted a photo of rain coming down and winds beginning to sway the leaves of the palm trees Tuesday evening.
The hurricane center warned the storm is "potentially catastrophic," especially if the worst conditions hit islands at high tides.
Track the storm here
Fishermen get boats out of water
Irma's forecast track currently has it near or over Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Anguilla by early Wednesday, and the British and US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Wednesday afternoon.
The Dominican Republic issued a hurricane warning Tuesday evening that included coastal cities from Cabo Engaño to the northern border with Haiti.
Preparations to protect life and property in those areas "should be rushed to completion," the hurricane center said in an 11 p.m. ET advisory.
"We could see storm surges of 7 to 11 feet -- that's certainly life-threatening -- and very, very heavy flooding rainfall" in the far northeastern Caribbean islands as well as winds that could cause catastrophic damage near the eye wall, Brennan said.
Hurricane warnings are issued to areas that are expected to experience hurricane-force winds (at least 74 mph).

On Antigua, home to roughly 80,000 people, fishermen used machines to lift their boats onto docks and other residents flocked to stores to stock up on food and other supplies ahead of the storm, video broadcast by ABS TV Antigua and distributed by Reuters shows.
The US Virgin Islands, with about 100,000 people, declared a state of emergency Tuesday and ordered the National Guard into active service.
John Klein, owner of White Bay Villas & Seaside Cottages on Jost Van Dyke island in the British Virgin Islands, told CNN they were rebooking the guests.
"We have backups for (our utilities), but in a storm of this magnitude it's not best for the guests to be there because they may get stuck," he said.
Computer models show the system possibly near the Dominican Republic, Haiti and the Turks and Caicos Islands on Thursday and Friday, and Cuba on Friday and Saturday -- and potentially turning north toward Florida by the weekend.
Puerto Rico: Long lines
Hundreds of people rushed to the stores, emptying shelves of food and drinking water just as Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard on Monday.
For hours, people also lined up outside hardware stores hoping to get plywood, batteries and power generators. If Irma knocks out power, Puerto Ricans said they are worried it would take weeks or months before the power is restored.
"It (power) is something absolutely necessary, especially due to Puerto Rico's weather. We need to have the A/C or a fan on all night," a woman told CNN affiliate WAPA.
Last month, the director of Puerto Rico's power utility, Ricardo Ramos Rodríguez, said several factors have made the island's electric system "vulnerable and fragile," WAPA reported.
One of those is the shortage of employees. Many workers recently retired or left their jobs for better prospects on the US mainland, Ramos Rodríguez said.
Public schools and officials at the University of Puerto Rico campuses have canceled classes, and many businesses are closed.
"Make a U-turn and die in the ocean, Irma. The Caribbean islands don't need more problems!" Twitter user mujertropical wrote about the storm.
Getting ready in the Sunshine State
While Irma's exact path is uncertain, Florida -- where storm-wary shoppers were standing in long lines outside some stores Tuesday -- is bracing for the storm.
Miami-Dade County will start evacuating special-needs residents on Wednesday, and may announce other evacuations soon, Mayor Carlos Gimenez said.
"I would rather inconvenience our residents" with evacuations than suffer loss of life, Gimenez said.
Schools and county offices are to be closed on Thursday and Friday.
And the state's Monroe County, which includes the Florida Keys, said it will order visitors to evacuate by sunrise Wednesday, and residents should begin to evacuate 12 hours later.
In Florida, people were standing in lines at stores to buy water and other goods on Tuesday.
In Miami, supermarkets and other stores were already selling out of water and nonperishable food.
"I've been through hurricanes and they're like 'Oh it's going to hit right here' and then it hits 30, 40 miles up the coast and it kind of changes the way everything goes, so better safe than sorry," Greg Andrews told CNN affiliate WPLG.
The lines at Costco in Pembroke Pines appeared to be several hours long, Javier Aragon tweeted.
In Clearwater, along Florida's Gulf Coast, a Publix store still was selling six-packs of water but had run out of larger cases, Carrie Hart said. Hart told CNN that workers there were trying to calm shoppers.
On Twitter, she described a "mad run" on the remaining six-packs.
"@publix is out of cases. Expecting more tonight. Store 1300. They are doing their best people. Calm down," she tweeted.
Irma could head to Florida by the weekend, Myers said Tuesday.

A post shared by Kurt S. (@kfitlifestyle) on Sep 5, 2017 at 6:24am PDT
"Just tremendous damage if we get this storm, this big, over parts of Florida," Myers said.
After declaring a state of emergency across Florida, Gov. Rick Scott said President Donald Trump had "offered the full resources of the federal government as Floridians prepare for Hurricane Irma."
White House Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert tweeted that the President had declared emergencies for Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
Scott also ordered 7,000 National Guard troops to report for duty by Friday morning. Of those, 100 were activated Tuesday to begin helping with preparations, he said.
"I cannot stress this enough. Get prepared," Scott said at a news conference. "Learn your evacuation zone. Listen to your locals. This storm has the potential to devastate this state. You have to take this seriously."
Near-record winds
Irma has become one of the strongest storms recorded in the Atlantic, and is threatening to slam into Caribbean islands including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands with "potentially catastrophic" force on Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said.
Irma was churning west Tuesday evening in the Atlantic with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph -- well above the 157 mph threshold for a Category 5, the hurricane center said.
The last storm with sustained winds that strong in the Atlantic was 2005's Hurricane Wilma, which weakened before it brushed Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, turned right and crossed Florida. Irma's Atlantic wind speeds are behind only 1980's Hurricane Allen, which peaked at 190 mph at sea.
US Navy to evacuate 5,000 as military preps for hurricane
Why Irma could be especially intense
Airplane flies straight into Hurricane Irma
Irma is a classic "Cape Verde hurricane," meaning it formed in the far eastern Atlantic, near the Cape Verde Islands (now known as the Cabo Verde Islands), before tracking all the way across the Atlantic, CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller said.
And Cape Verde storms frequently become some of the largest and most intense hurricanes. Examples include Hurricane Hugo, Hurricane Floyd and Hurricane Ivan.
Another storm, Tropical Storm Jose, is 1,500 miles east of the Lesser Antilles.
"Interests in the Leeward Islands should monitor the future progress of Jose," the hurricane center said.

‘I can’t forget that night’
Ankara, Turkey (CNN) -- On the night of July 15 last year, tanks rolled into the streets of Turkey's two largest cities. Soldiers blocked the famous Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul, bombs struck the parliament building in the capital Ankara, and a helicopter stolen by rogue pilots was shot down by an F-16 jet.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was hundreds of miles away at a seaside resort when the coup, mounted by a faction of the military, got underway. By the time Erdogan emerged to address the nation via FaceTime hours later, it had already begun to fizzle.
Roughly 250 people died standing up to the soldiers who took part in the uprising, and thousands of alleged plotters were rounded up the next day. Erdogan claimed his exiled former ally Fethullah Gulen was behind the attempt, a charge the US-based cleric denied.
Turkey has been under a state of emergency since then, and Erdogan has tightened his grip on power while overseeing a massive purge of those who he says rose up against him.
Over the past year, Erdogan and his government have clamped down on civil liberties across Turkey, gutted public institutions and universities, heavily restricted the media and ordered mass arrests of activists, journalists and the political opposition.
More than 169,000 people have faced "judicial action" ranging from travel restrictions and detentions to arrest warrants since the coup attempt, according to the justice ministry, the state news agency Anadolu reported Thursday.
12 months on from the attempted coup, residents in Ankara reflect on how their lives have changed since that violent night -- and what they think the future will bring.
Demet Akbulut, a 37-year-old call center worker
"It was a hard year for me. I can't forget those days. We were so afraid, me and my children. I just can't forget that night. My husband went off to stand vigil [in the street]. That night he went, we were afraid because we were under fire. My husband was injured. We never even went to the hospital. We never talked about it. So much happened. It was so hard and as we come up on the anniversary it comes back to me."
"I don't see the future as being that good personally. I see the news ... I come out of my office and I'm uneasy. So much has happened here in Kizilay [a neighborhood in Ankara] -- explosions happened here, so I'm nervous."
Sadik Candan, a 55-year-old kebab master
"I knew nothing bad would happen. When the opposition leader came out against the coup I said, okay this is not going to happen. Because if you have a politician who isn't a part of the government going out against the coup, then people will believe him. This is our country, and if necessary we are ready to die. My friend was shot in the leg that night. He had done nothing wrong and we gave him treatment.
"I see a better future. We have to trust that the people will do what is best. But of course we know that some people who are responsible for the coup are not being punished. The political wing of the FETO [a reference to Gulen's movement]is not being held responsible."

"Turkey after the coup has had a bad year. We've regressed. Whatever what one person says, that's what everyone does. No one thinks for themselves. Everyone just follows. Everyone is afraid, from the vendors to the people who work in the government. Whenever you ask them anything they say 'I didn't see anything, hear anything or know anything.'"
"I see the future getting even worse. I think everything is wrong. The system, the administration. Everyone is talking about it getting better, about a new Turkey but I don't see that. The way people are and the way we are being led, it's all bad in my opinion."
"I was at home and found out (about the coup) from TV. If you ask me, I don't believe it at all. I think it was a set up. How was it that half of the government knew about the coup and the other half didn't?"
Hasan Dervisoglu, a 57-year-old spice and nut vendor
"I was at home then we went out to Kizilay and stayed through to the morning. I see a very bright future for Turkey. We grew more courageous since then, more and more courageous. We fought. We resisted and we came out of the other end. Over the last year we have grown more peaceful and the future is brighter. Our business is getting better. It is better. I want everything to be right."

Funda Taskin, a 23-year-old law school student
"The last year the country has spent under pressure. With all the laws and with the judiciary being restricted, whereas normal citizens should have been feeling more secure, it's been the opposite. We feel more under pressure and constantly under threat. I'm a law school student, our professors talk about what is right and what is wrong all the time so we felt the pressure even more.
"I don't think we are moving in the right direction. I was so afraid that night and I don't think its been cleared completely yet. I still feel like there might be another coup. I don't feel totally secure, either for myself or for my family. Nothing has been done to make me feel more secure. The state of emergency is not making me feel more secure. And I don't approve of any of the decisions. I'm not hopeful. After a coup, they should have made us feel more secure, but I haven't felt that. It's gone in the opposite direction. I feel like there will be more pressure, more threats ... I think terror will get worse. I am pessimistic."

Ismet Sinaktas, a 78-year-old retiree
"The past year has been fine, the government has been good. But there are those who are trying to smear it. Look at the opposition leader, he is marching for justice on the streets. He should look for it in parliament not the streets. We learned from the TV that night. I wasn't afraid because I am a Muslim but it was so bad. It posed a problem for the state, for the leaders and for us Muslims. We as Muslims don't want a coup. If we continue the way we have been then we will have a good future."
Hilal, a 22-year-old journalism student
"I think the last year has been very difficult for Turkey, especially after the coup. I see on TV that there will be planes flying overhead in Ankara for the commemoration, but I find that wrong. There are so many people who lost their loved ones that night who are in pain, families in pain. It's not right to have them remember that night, it's not right to have them relive such a bad day.
"I am not very hopeful, I don't want to say it but I don't find our way of being led to be correct, the system is wrong. I'm not happy unfortunately. For example, I am a journalism student but I don't want to get into political [reporting] in the future because it seems to me that every journalist ends up in prison. My family is also very nervous about this, and that's why I am leaning towards sports reporting."

Mahmut Sahin, a 57-year-old lottery ticket seller
"I hope nothing more happens. Let's hope for better days. But I don't think so. I don't see things getting easier. People can't go out on the streets and express their views. I was at home. I was drinking tea and then the planes started flying overhead. I wasn't afraid. I want more freedom for people. But so many innocent people have lost their jobs. Sure there are people who are guilty among them but you have to sift through it and give the innocent their jobs back."
Ali Calar, a 33-year-old flag seller
"The last year has been always politics, constant politics. I was out selling flags at a bazaar that night. I was returning from that when it happened. If Erdogan goes we will miss him sorely. He does everything he can to help us. My child goes to school I can't afford the books, but the President provides for it. I get so sad to think about it. Innocent people died. I hope this never happens again. If we hadn't stood up that night, we wouldn't be calm like this."

5 quiet U.S. coastal towns that offer a seaside escape
(CNN)Drowsy port towns aren't trying to make it big. They're content to sit quietly idle without the throngs of trend-seekers in search of a place to deem the next hot spot. That's why we like them.
At these under-wraps locales, you'll find fewer tourists, eateries that are understated (though the grub is anything but) and that ever-photogenic lighthouse to lure likes on your Instagram feed.
Whether west or east, peace, quiet and home-style hospitality converge at these seaport hideaways.
1. Mystic, Connecticut
The tall ships will tell you when you've reached Mystic, Connecticut's cute coastal town and the muse behind Julia Roberts' first film, "Mystic Pizza."
Mystic's maritime history dates to its days as a shipbuilding center, a time well preserved at the Mystic Seaport Museum, the world's leading and largest of its kind, home to the famed 1800s whaleship, Charles W. Morgan.
It's the perfect jumping off point for a sail at dusk or a trip on the 1908 coal-fired wooden steamer, Sabino.
The menu changes daily at the Oyster Club, save the hot buttered lobster roll -- and the coconut mussels are a win.
Secure a spot in the Treehouse, the Club's outdoor bar and deck, and you'll eat with a view of Mystic River.
2. Nantucket, Massachusetts
If you love the sea but loathe the thought of hobnobbing in Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket is your place.
One of Cape Cod's (relatively) quieter haunts, this fisherman's island 30 miles out to sea preserves its old seaport appeal.
You can rent a jeep to get to Great Point Light for secluded sea time on a remote beach where grey seals pop out from below the surf.
Cisco Brewers houses Triple Eight Distillery and Nantucket Vineyards, where you can drink it all from the comfort of an Adirondack chair.
At low-key Sayle's seafood market you can sit for scallops and quohaug (local hard-shell clam) chowder or have your 3.5-pound lobster of choice bagged to go to eat on your bungalow's balcony.
3. Ogunquit, Maine
This York county town is a playground designed to lure Northeast lobster lovers.
After a morning spent aboard The Silverlining sailboat that sets out from Perkins Cove, where any present passerby is called to open the manually operated drawbridge for boats, you can head out lobstering.
Then snag a stool out front at Lobster Shack.
While simply made lobster quarter-pounders are the draw, the clam chowder is among Maine's best.
The beach here has been dubbed the state's prettiest. The scenic route along the Marginal Way gets you from Perkins Cove to the shore on foot or bike.
4. Pacific Grove, California
Beauty is a requisite for any place where butterflies breed.
In Pacific Grove, a California coastal town close to Monterey but far from its many tourists, Monarchs migrate every year, as do people looking for a hometown hideaway.
At the famed Asilomar Beach you might spot a sea otter among the tide pools.
Stroll along Oceanview Boulevard and eventually you'll happen upon the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast, Point Pinos.
You can spend the night in a historic Victorian home turned inn -- there are more homes that style per capita than anywhere else in the country.
Passionfish is the place to eat -- meals are made with as much heart as its name suggests.
You won't tire of straightforward whitefish. The innovative menu changes every day though staples include dishes like basil-stuffed rainbow trout and sea scallops in tomato-truffle butter.
5. Watch Hill, Rhode Island
In Watch Hill, a tiny town on a Block Island Sound peninsula, residents give directions by point of interest -- the village has just two main streets.
So you'll walk 10 paces past the beach to get to Flying Horse Carousel, the oldest operating suspended horse carousel in the United States.
Fort Mansfield on Napatree Point was a prime lookout during the Revolutionary War.
Seafood fans know to bypass the more upmarket venues and get their fish fix at the down-home spots locals frequent.
In Watch Hill, you can get a hot lobster roll with butter-toasted buns at Two Little Fish. Or have it packed to picnic at the Cooked Goose and enjoy it at East Beach.
Black raspberry ice cream is a seasonal Rhode Island specialty available around town.
The water's edge Ocean House is a Victorian-era hotel and the only five-star, five-diamond resort in the state.
Even if you don't sleepover, drinks at dusk on the grand porch are a should-do.
