Round three: Shongololo vs
עם, am
(poll at the end)
Shongololo (siSwati)
[ʃonɡolôːlo]
Translation: Millipede
siSwati is an Atlantic-Congo language belonging to the Bantu branch, which covers most of sub-Saharan Africa. It is spoken by 960 000 people in Eswatini, where it is the national language, but by 4,7 million people in total, half of whom speak it as a second language. Most of them live in South Africa. The prefix si- in siSwati indicates the noun class, shortly explained as a gender system but with more (up to 20) classes, less arbitrary categorization and different but paired classes for singular and plural. From what I’ve found, si- is the prefix for class 7, indicating body parts or pairs in siSwati. From what I remember from a lecture, some Bantu languages use the same class to signify languages, which gives related names such as isiZulu and kinyaRwanda.
Motivation: I love how it feels when saying it! It also manages to seem both long and round, just like the animal itself. <3
Note: I found evidence of shongololo being used in siSwati, but the IPA transcription is taken from Zulu (ishongololo, in which the i- signifies noun class), which is closely related to siSwati. I thought it should have the prefix in- for objects and animals but couldn’t find evidence of that word ever being used, so probably not. Someone who knows siSwati, please tell me how it all works.
עם, am (Hebrew)
[am]
Translation: Tends to be translated as 'people (as a group like 'the jewish people')' but also its... so much stronger than that. It's like... group? Tribe? But like. Bigger. Not necessarily in size but in... feeling i guess? It's stronger.
Hebrew is an Afro-Asiatic language belonging to the Semitic branch and is the Jewish language in which the Tanakh was written down, originating in today’s Israel. Even after Hebrew stopped being spoken by Jews, it lived on as a literary medium and religious language. Using a modern version of Hebrew as a daily language was promoted principally by Eliezer Ben-Yehuda in the late 19th century. Reviving efforts went well and Hebrew is now the official language of Israel, where it's spoken by 8 million people. 1 million people outside Israel also speak Hebrew.
Motivation: I'm kinda sad it doesn't really have an equivalent in English because it means there's no way to really express what a lot of ethnic groups are on a deeper cultural level. Are Jewish people an ethnic group? A religious group? A culture? A 'people'? We're all of them at the same time. We're עם. It's a fairly simple word yet it carries so much power that I find most of the English equivalents (despite how precise they are at describing different types of groups) kind of lack.
Note: Another possible translation is nation, in the sense of a people not a state

And finally, more crochet! After I finished the rocky horror lips, I felt this vague urge to clear out patterns I'd acquired and never made, and when I looked at my ravelry stash, obviously shuttle the shongololo was the first thing to catch my eye. Yes, it was a free pattern, not money I'd spent going to waste, but come on. IRRESISTIBLE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did do some modifications on the fly, because it's written for dk yarn (and a lot of it), and i have very little dk, but SO much worsted, including the variegated stripe yarn I was absolutely determined to use for the body. I think I multiplied recommended hook size by 1.5 all over and just went for it! Checking the gauge? In THIS economy?? But it was a huge success, even though I VASTLY underestimated how much material it would take and despite intending to use up my stash, I had to re-up on supplies multiple times (between yarn, stuffing, and breaking my hook, it was like. seven trips). I must inform you that there's so much material in this thing that when I tossed it onto this bed, it rolled off the other side and sounded like a body hitting the floor. It's huge, and it's HEAVY.

But the results are undeniable! Holding two stands of multicolor yarn with the same gradient pattern and just making sure they never sync was SO cool. And the underbelly is a velvet yarn that's sooooo so soft, I love it so much. However, 132 legs. That was... unfortunate. But I'm a creature of fleeting memory! And when I recovered a little, I started thinking about the short pillbug version of the millipede, and I started thinking about my yarn leftovers, and, well, here we are. I used one strand of a different gradient yarn to mix it up a little, and also, to avoid even more shopping trips, but oh man. OH MAN. This pattern is something I probably won't do again, but it is very, VERY fantastic

I made this. It's a gift for my brother and his girlfriend. The white yarn is glow-in-the-dark. My coworker calculated that I used about a mile of yarn.

I have made The Creature. this is modified from the free shuttle the shongololo pattern by projectarian!
I only did 29 segments and improvised the legs and antennae. the eyes are sewn felt. I used 32oz of stuffing, a little over 3 (7oz) skeins of the body color, and a little over 1 (8.8oz) skein of the belly color, which are loops and threads sweet snuggles lite in robin blossom and winter white. I used the 4mm hook recommended by the pattern but just used a single strand for all parts. I think I also turned the belly inside out because I like it better.

Wip: Shuttle the Shongololo
Est time: 8hr 17min
Another wip, I saw this pattern (which I'll link at the bottom of this post) and immediately got to work on it. Hopefully I'll be able to balance it with the little blanket I'm still working on, as I'm very excited to be working on shuttle.
Although it seems like I haven't done much for 8 hours, the pictures don't represent the true size or color of this lovely bug. The main body (3rd picture) covers my thigh in width, and goes down to the bottom of my knee in length, and, as always, the colors are much more pleasant in person (the green is less harsh and the second color of the main body is more pink/peachy as well as the little spots in it being less neon). I'm excited as well because my mom is going to be making one as well, as soon as she's finished a few other projects she's working on. So we'll have twin shongololos, haha
I downloaded the pattern from this website! I've found it to be pretty straightforward and very helpful with it's specifications. There's other free patterns, as well as paid ones, all very cute!
