Obscura #5: Super Mario Galaxy
Mario Galaxy is a Nintendo game for the Wii (and later re-released as part of 3D All Stars), and is home to a couple things we'll be sure to talk about! First things first, we'll have to get back to basics and talk about the very popular Hell Valley Sky Trees.
Tumblr media
These four strange creatures were quite the talk back in earlier internet days, and were on many, many Top 10 Creepiest X's. There's still absolutely nothing known about why they were implemented, they're just lurking there in the background. Now funnily enough, no matter what you do, you can't go to the Hell Valley Sky Trees at all, as they're part of the skybox. I won't go too indepth about them, as I would have nothing that hasn't already been said.
Second thing we'll talk about is the Toy Train hidden away in Toy Time Galaxy. Tucked away underneath a triangle block, and on an alcove, you'll be able to find a strange train simply hidden away.
Tumblr media
This train serves no purpose and is simply... hidden away. We also don't know why this is placed. The Hell Valley Sky Tress might've been placed just to spook more observant players and or fuel the old playground rumors. But this train? This one weirds me out even to this day. Maybe an inside joke? Who knows.
Either way, these two hidden off things are relatively well known in the Mario community, but there's always someone who doesn't know these things! Next Obscura I'll be sure to put out something actually obscure, but it's nice to get back to basics!

Nintendo's devs adding the Hell Valley trees in the skybox of Shiverburn Galaxy:
The story is nice but have we considered including shadow people around and about for no real reason other than vibes and atmosphere

Top: it is well known that the skybox of Shiverburn Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy 2 contains alien-like figures looking down at Mario from atop a cliff.
Bottom: although it is impossible to get Mario close to them, since the game both does not provide a way to get up high enough in the galaxy and also automatically moves the skybox away whenever it is approached (making it unreachable even by hacking the game), it is possible to compare the sizes of Mario to the figures by loading them into a model viewer. This reveals that the figures are extremely large, towering over Mario (who is visible underneath the figure on the left, zoom in to view).

Name: Li’l Brr and Li’l Cinder
Debut: Super Mario Galaxy
It’s not uncommon for things to have fire and ice counterparts, huh? What can I say! Fire and ice go together like peanut butter and jelly! But don’t try to eat them! “Hot” and “cold” are received on different parts of your tongue, and you in fact CAN burn and freeze your mouth at the same time! Science fact!
This is really as direct as “ice and fire enemies” can get! One is a chunk of ice and will freeze you over if it touches you, and the other is a hot magma rock that burns you if it touches you! Neither is pleasant! If you’re frozen, you can not control Mario for a brief period of time, and if you’re burned, you can not control Mario for a brief period of time! Did I emphasize the right words here? I don’t want you thinking that a Li’l Cinder’s gonna freeze you in a block of ice, or that a Li’l Brr is gonna have you hopping around mad!
Both are pretty annoying, but fortunately, with a good spin, you can reduce either of them to a small black rock and defeat them in that state, but be careful, because if they fall into ice water or magma, they’ll return to their original form!
Tumblr media
It’s only fitting, of course, that both these enemies make their debut in the Freezeflame Galaxy, which delivers exactly what you’d expect it to! Half this galaxy is Freeze, and the other half is Flame! The “freeze” bit is where you find Li’l Brrs, and the “flame” bit is where you meet Li’l Cinders, but you probably already figured that out, you smart cookie, you.
But these enemies are not restricted to the Freezeflame Galaxy, oh no. Really, any galaxy with ice or fire is likely to have them, except the Shiverburn Galaxy, which is... pretty much the same gimmick as the Freezeflame Galaxy if we’re being honest. Let’s not kid with ourselves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of particular note, however, are these two planets in the Battle Belt Galaxy, specifically dedicated to these two enemies. Not only have they spread across the universe, but they have effectively started their own planets. Their own civilizations. One day you show up in the Battle Belt Galaxy and discover a planet solely inhabited by a populace of Li’l Cinders. The moral choice would be to let them be, and let them live their lives, but you, the player, hunger for that Power Star. Mario is a good man, he would never intentionally ravage a planet’s entire native population for such selfish gains! But Mario has no controls over his actions. Are you willing to make a man kill just so you can be happy? Are you willing to make a man slaughter for a cheap reward? Are you.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, it is possible to freeze the falling meteors in Shiverburn Galaxy in place simply by looking upward in first-person view. Looking upward at a steep enough angle stops the movement of the meteors entirely until the angle is lowered or first-person view is exited. (Footage recorded by me in a Wii emulator.)
