18 minutes by Peter Bregman
1. Pause for a second
We often think that we’re on track, working hard towards our goals. Sometimes though, this can have us taking the longer, less efficient route, or sometimes even point us in the wrong direction. It’s important to regularly stop and consider if we are doing what’s really important, or just the first thing we saw this morning. This can happen because often we see planning as an extra, time-consuming task. The reality is that we need to plan to be able to take the most efficient route.
Stop, pause, and take a look at the big picture. Ask yourself if what you are doing is the most efficient way to achieve your goals. If not, it’s time to get planning.
2. Use your weaknesses
There’s this idea that you should avoid your weaknesses. But weaknesses are all about the outlook, they are only weak in certain contexts. You’re stubborn? Perhaps socially that could be considered a weakness but you would be more likely to get your way in a negotiation. Maybe you’re obsessed about something? In fact, you know more about it than anyone else. You’re an expert.
Think about it. How can you turn your weaknesses into positives?
3. Book a time (with yourself)
You know what you have to do, but how many times are you going to keep saying I’ll do it tomorrow? If you really want to get something done, decide when and where you are going to do it. Get it out of your mind and on to a piece of paper.
Book an appointment with yourself.

1/? Take Control Humans like to be in control. No matter whether it makes any difference to the outcome, we are hard-wired to enjoy the feeling. Sometimes though, we’re told that we are a ‘natural born ______’ and we start to believe that our ability is out of our control. Our motivation comes from our sense of control, I mean, why would you study to be a doctor if you’re always going to be bad at science and never succeed? but, if we believe that we can control how well we do by making the decision to study, we realise that we are in charge of our life, and that we’re free to choose the path we take into the future. If you feel like you are in control, you are likely to be self-motivated and get up in the morning knowing that the day will become what you make of it, and not just the result of external factors.
You are in control of your life.

5 tips for a better you in 2017
ayyyyyyy lets see how this goes. ive never tried posting tips before so fingers crossed... thanks for reading!
1. commit to your bed time we all know the importance of sleep yet we can always just finish this one thing and next thing you know it’s midnight. the easiest way to stop this would be to set an alarm and have a short evening routine where you disconnect from your electronic devices, brush your teeth, read and then go to bed. for this to work though, you should be committed and when you hesitate, have a plan (it helps to remember that feeling when you’ve just woken up and all you want is to go back to sleep). surely whatever you’re doing can wait until morning? (school or work? choose a bed time with http://sleepyti.me/)
2. meditate its not a complicated concept, just focusing on your breathing for a couple of minutes a day can help your ability to focus. practise bringing your mind back to your breathing whenever it wanders off thinking about something else. have control over your own thoughts…
3. wash your hands thoroughly washing your hands well and regularly can greatly reduce your chances of getting sick, especially if you’re a nail-biter. some studies have shown that up to 62% of men and up to 40% of women don’t bother washing their hands after using the restroom. not only are you saving yourself the trouble of being sick, you are also saving others in your workplace or school.
4. keep your room tidy i don’t know about you but if mum asks me to do a boring job, it suddenly becomes the worst thing in the world and I would rather do anything but that particular thing. similarly when you’re not feeling terrible, its easier just to put some music or a podcast on and start cleaning. (you’ll ultimately save your parents a bit of stress as well)
5. take the time to review and plan this is probably one of the best things you can do to stay on top of your work and life. if you take the time to review, you can identify which aspects of your life you would like to improve on and remind yourself to make changes for the week ahead. this also gives you time to take a look at any activities or due dates you have coming up over the next week and plan for them so that you’re less likely to forget that specialists appointment you had to wait months for or the fact that your lecture is cancelled this week. you might also choose to plan your day the night before or use a to do list on paper or on your phone but make sure your system works for you, and review and change it as needed. (i would suggest reviewing on a friday or sunday night)
