How tall is Shirecorn?

It occurs to me that I never specified how tall my fursona is. Horses are typically measured in Hands, which is about the width of an adult's hand, measured from thumb to pinky and stacked like so:

The hands reach up to the withers (shoulder) of a horse, rather than measuring up to their head.

The top of the withers is actually determined by the long bones that protrude off the back of the spine, rather than the upper edge of the horse's shoulder blade. It's a bit of a misnomer to call them bones, as they are part of the vertebra, not joints connected to it.

You have spines too, but yours are not as pronounced as those of ungulates (hoofed mammals) nor as epic as spinosaurus.

in horses, the muscle that lays on top of these bones determines the height of the withers.

A "Hand," understood as a standardized unit, is equal to 4 inches, 10.16 centimeters. Modern competitions and the professional horse world measure exact to the withers height in centimeters, but your average cowboy still talks in hands.

The first horse is 14 hands, so 56 inches/142.24 centimeters at the shoulder. That's on the smaller end of average for a horse! For those whose perception of height is compared to their own, that's 4'8, so the shoulder is below the top of most peoples' heads.

The tallest horse breed in the world is the shire horse.

These massive horses can reach 19 hands tall! To make it even, let's have both our guy and our shire be 17.5 hands tall. That's 5'10, 178 CM at the shoulder and top of withers.

Where does Shirecorn fit into this?

I represent myself as a shire unicorn with fluffy feet and a blueish coat. Until today, everyone has had to guess my height whenever drawing or picturing me. I haven't really gotten into it because I knew I needed to explains hands, withers, and average horse heights. But with all that out of the way, I have created a height chart to show Bo vs a typical shire, vs a human.

Don't get distracted by the typical shire silhouette. I just threw that in there to show how I measure up.

That's right, I am 1 hand tall. That's 4 inches, or about 10 cm, measured at the withers! If you use the top of my horn, you'll get the wrong height.

But now that you know how to measure a horse, you can picture me in all my Shirecorn glory.

Go ahead, put in pocket. Take on adventure. Set me free. Stack shirecorns up to measure horses and humans alike. The power is in your hands.

deer in general! Some specific unicorns I base on other species of deer, sheep, or antelope. It's very much I Do What I Want rather than having a specific science thought.

in addition, I actually make a stylistic choice whenever I draw them that is not correct to any deer.

I'm perfectly capable of drawing deer necks, and I don't have a scientific reason for the horse neck. Just aesthetics.

So yeah! it's deer in general but not quite deer.

Unicorn!Reader x Shire!Simon x Kelpie!Soap

Reader who’s the prettiest fucking thing Simon has ever seen — eyes shining, the glossiest hair he has ever encountered and he knows that such pretty things are not for the likes of him.

But he can’t help but stop his work, coming closer to the fence — all heavy bulk and rolling muscles, deceptively soft steps as he watches you.

“A bit lost, luv?”, he hums out, licking his cracked lips when you turn to him, his breath stalling because well, fuck him, that’s an actual unicorn. Not just a pretty thing, are you?

You don’t come close, watching him out of the woods, even your skin glowing and god, he can bet his left arm you are soft as a cloud to the touch.

He can bet you will look so so good under him. With him.

Simon tilts his heavy head to the side, huffing out air, splintered lips curling upwards. Skittish. It’s good that you are careful, would want to make it too easy for him, would ya?

And then there’s Soap — unruly power and raw hunger and no fucking manners whatsoever, surfacing out of the lakes and streams, always a little too close for your comfort, always ready to invade your space.

Getting you closer and closer to the water, his carefree demeanour just as deceptive as Simon’s softness.

“Ye wound me, bonnie. Ah never would’ve done anythin’”, he swears when you bristle and step back into safety of the woods, his eyes on you so fucking hungry, his eyes never leaving you.

Soap can smell you a mile away, can feel you coming with a sixth sense, always there whenever you need to drink. Or wash, for that matter.

Soap who can also smell someone else’s scent mingling with yours, brows furrowing. Who’s there trying to take what’s his? Not fair, he was here first, he saw you first, he’s getting you first.

But Simon is bigger and Simon is heavier and Simon is older — glare as heavy as his kick is.

Soap just might be in love.

Monoceros, the Ghostly Knight

(Date Finished: 14/10/24) Monoceros is a ghostly unicorn armed with the protection of the ghostly royals. In this artwork, he is depicted bowing to the king of ghosts after the mission to free him from imprisionment. Within the image you can see a unicorn, a shire horse with a glowing green fiery horn. Upon their skin is a galaxy in, mixes of red and blue. But he kneels in front of the bleeding king who does not fear him and yet the king doesn't know who he is

Monoceros, a name which drifted through time. His name had changed through the centuries but his strength and his mission had never faltered. Through times he would change, a white perfect unicorn, a unicorn made of reds and blacks. But with each new ruler of the ghostly kingdoms, he would stand aside them. Even when they are not meant to be. He would fight along side them, though if they were not worthy of the admiration of the solider of the stars, he would bring their ruin. The king who had taken his place was send to ruin, fought against by a child who had no right to be king. To be king was not an easy task, and the princeling had learned what life had decided would be his path. The knight had no one to watch, and such he ensured that his princeling would live. A young and hollow ghostly soul who begged and pleaded for his parents. Only for them to be who left him behind. One with an evil grin, the red of the dead coated her grin. The other, left in shards of broken glass and blue blood which turned black. Yet Monoceros stayed, he healed the young one. Protected him. And once the princeling had found a home, Monoceros belived that his journey was to be over. He silenced inside of the princelings mind. Aware that he could be saved once more, but the knight of the crow did not leave. For he knew there were still things yet unsaid. The king did not know of his crown. Monoceros, bowing before the unknowing king who has lost his son. The king who never knew what it was to be a king, neither a child. A king who had died so young and yet never allowed to grieve for the time which had been lost beneath the waves of green. The king who had fought for freedom of his own soul since the moment he drew his first breath. The king that Monoceros knows will take the place with pride, even if he does not know what it will entail.

Monoceros bows, for the king has lost so much. The knight of ghosts knows, he does not come bearing good news. With stars along his skin and galaxies inside of his words. He cannot assure the king of the finality of time. Of how moments of loss cannot define him. Monoceros cannot tell him the death of the prince, for they were never his words to say. Nor can he assure him of the safety of his family. Monoceros knows he cannot return them to what they were before the fires. But Monoceros bows, for he knows that before him, albeit injured and ruined, bloody and broken. His king will stand before them all, and his king will return the world from ruin. You Get! Extinct unicorns as a prehistoric superfamily of ungulate mammals. A recent recent scientific breakthrough about their horns has forced paleoartists to revisit long-held beliefs about their anatomy

The long horn on the unicorn's forehead was neither exposed bone, nor covered by a keratin sheath. Instead, the horn was coated in soft fur, with tendons running up the front and connecting to the back at the horn tip. These tendons allowed the unicorn to flex the skin on the backside of the horn, which raised or lowered a crest of long, stiff hairs. It is theorized (due to differences in tendon connection points) that bucks sported large crests, while does had little to none. Both sexes still sported fuzzy, skin-covered horns, however.

This new school of thought must now be applied to all or most of the unicorn species known to paleoscience, unless an exception is found to support bare bones or keratin sheaths.

The smallest species have been reconstructed with the largest crests, able to stretch them upward or pin them flat at will.

As science advances, we are able to guess more fascinating and complex details of extinct species. It is a wonderful thing to better understand extinct fauna, even if goes against popular interpretations. protesting will not change how these creatures courted, fought, and lived!

Ranking Animated Horse Designs Take 3

This time I really am back by popular demand because the other two posts have been getting a steady trickle of notes for over a year now.

(If you're looking for stuff like Disney and Dreamworks there are two other posts. Here we've got mostly random cartoons and also the Pokemon horses)

Starlite (Rainbow Brite) 6/10 Little weird that he seems to be drawn in a style that's like 3x more realistic than any other character in this show but hey sometimes you just ascend to a higher plane of existence. (2014 Reboot Starlite gets a 3/10. I do not trust him.)

Skydancer (Rainbow Brite) 7/10 I bumped Starlite down a point because he wants what Skydancer has. Skydancer doesn't need rainbows to fly. Skydancer has a lightning bolt. Skydancer has the Drama. (The one wiki page said he's a Shire or a Clydesdale and um I don't think so. Maybe a Friesian.)

On-yx (Rainbow Brite) This is a rocket powered balloon animal. 2/10

Sunriser (Rainbow Brite) 5/10 Eh. I like her hair though.

Swift Wind (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power/ She-Ra Princess of Power)

Right (older version) 8/10 I don't understand the wing physics going on here. Also not sure if the horn is part of the mask or just attached to the mask. Diggin the bib though. Also love that he's a ginger.

Left (new version) 4/10 If the older version wasn't there this would score higher because just as a character design I don't think it's bad but if these are supposed to be the same character he seems so cutesy and I do not vibe with it. I don't know either show. So maybe that works. But it feels wrong.

Amalthea (The Last Unicorn) 9/10 They gave the unicorn the split deer hooves, and the lions tail and that is automatic points from me. Bummed they didn't go all out and give us the goat's beard. Rude. Any distance shot, I love. Close-ups of the face creep me out with the giant doll eyes and tiny nose.

Honey Pie Pony (Strawberry Shortcake) 8/10 Adorable. Fantastically chunky design. The others from this... show? book? brand? are like 6s or 5s depending. But Honey Pie has the It factor. (The It Factor here apparently being that recurring pattern of only the main character's horse being able to talk?? This is the third. Swift Wind, Starlite and Honey Pie have dark secrets about how they come by this knowledge).

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic "ponies" Just as characters they're cute in a "trying so hard to be cute that they almost miss the mark entirely" way. But this is about how they are as HORSE designs. And these are magical gremlins not horses. 1/10 (WHAT is happening on the far right of this set. I do not approve. Zebra is fine though).

My Little Pony: A New Generation Like if the MLP: FM ponies and the Trolls characters somehow had children. Somehow the main character of Bee Movie was also involved. The one on the left makes TikTok thirst traps. -2/10

My Little Pony Tales 3/10 I can almost tell they're meant to be horses. Plus that one has a tattoo of a comb. So. Full extra point for the comb tattoo.

Bratz Horses I can't tell if there's an official video game or cartoon design for these but in ANY given version I found the conclusion is the same: if you look into the gigantic distended eye you will be put under the horse's curse. 1/10

Boxer (Animal Farm) 4/10 All horses are equal but some are more equal than others, but Boxer is not one of them because his mouth is not okay.

Marvin (Marvin the Tap Dancing Horse) 5/10 I mean. Dude's got spats. Come on.

Ponyta (Pokemon) 3/5 The armpit and middle thigh flames were a choice.

Rapidash (Pokemon) 8/10 Look at his face. The angst. He has seen things.

Mudsdale (Pokemon) 8/10 The classic mohawk, dreadlocks and legwarmers trifecta. Love it. Would love to hug him.

Galarian Ponyta 3/10 It's giving sheep, and it's giving dog. Very little horse.

Galarian Rapidash (Pokemon) 4/10 He's angry because his hair is too long and he can't walk and also he has not eaten enough somebody feed this horse.

Origin Palkia (Pokemon) 6/10 A built-in hoola-hoop AND thigh high Boots?! what fashion.

Keldeo (Pokemon) 1/10 Clown goat.

Spectrier (Pokemon) 10/10 Beautiful goth girl horse floating around like a Victorian ghost who's too modest to show her ankles.

Mudbray (Pokemon) 5/10 He has passed through the depths of existential dread and returned world-weary but unshakeable and with a snazzy bowl cut.

In all, I love horses, I love berserk, so why the fuck not? I can appreciate the detail and the subtle differences to a horse that belongs to a character like I pointed out w guts and casca. I was gonna add the unicorns but I can't add more than 10 images. Poor things though, being taken to war and back

Frodo is a unicorn- very weak and limited magic though (levitation of smaller objects, little light- not much more, and it takes embarrassingly much focus and energy), because he grew up in the peaceful shire and deemed other things more important(he can easily write with a pen with his horn though!!)- he is part of the hobbit subspecies, hence the bigger hooves and extra fur near them :3

Legolas is an alicorn, though not strong- the time of the elves (tall and slender) is nearing its end
