You there! A shipwrecked 64 player trying to identify dwellers/starlings based off of ambience! Have this messily thrown together flowchart that popped into my head on a walk that may or may not be helpful!
if anyone wants it I can also give a description of the ambiences
or you could just go listen to them but this is good to have on the fly and it's what goes through my head every time I hear a noise in layer 3+

Is it normal to be completely terrified of the Starlings bcs....
I recently got the game! I have been enjoying every bit and piece of it! But....I got to the Plaza, where the Starlings become actually active...and i haven't opened the game since! I HAVENT EVEN SEEN THE DWELLERS YET, and I hid in a barrel right when I got there

I don’t know if Crossover art requests are allowed but eh I’ll give it try.
Olive Otter scuba diving underwater while helping teaching Bucky how to swim basically a underwater style mini-game scenerio.
but also accompanied by the Bull Shark Pup aka the shark protagonist from the game Maneater as it friendly like helps keep both Olive and Bucky safe underwater but mainly Olive is quite motherly to it and pets it’s damaged scarred dorsal fin.
and secretly she would be in awe of its unique colour pattern.
Olive Otter would wear her swimsuit from what she originally wears in Shipwrecked 64 and diving flippers
and diving mask goggles on her face while a scuba oxygen tank on her back and breathing from the oxygen mouthpiece.
Cute Headcanons: The Bull Shark Pup secretly knows about Olivia Flinch’s Starling or Dweller lurking in the underwater background eerily watching and surprisingly the Bull Shark would be quite friendly to her despite her terrifying existence.
The Bull Shark Pup sneakily likes to snuggle against either Olive or Bucky’s fur while underwater and mainly nuzzles it’s snout.
or it playfully gently steals and bites Bucky’s hat and swims away while underwater or sometimes steals one of Olive’s flippers or diving mask goggles but getting into a underwater swimming playful chase
and slowly gives the things back.
The Bull Shark Pup is quite intelligent and cutely gets along with Olive a lot while she would would chaotically swim back onto land after scuba diving and carry the Bull Shark Pup in her arms and boast about saying Look at my kid! Proudly protective parental like
While Bucky tries to remind Olive it’s a shark and needs water. but thankfully it can survive outta water for long time and even survive in different conditions since it’s a Bull Shark. And Giovanni is trying to process for no funny chaotic reason how the hell did Olive and Bucky they get a shark pup to be born- cause that shouldn’t be scientifically possible… unless- Jk
sorry for wasting your time but pls take care ! Maneater x Shipwrecked 64

Shipwrecked 64 made me realize something about breaking the fourth wall. It's not a problem in most genres, but in horror it can be really counterproductive. I'll try to explain what I mean. (spoilers)
To break the fourth wall is to stop insisting to the audience that your story is real. The audience might gradually forget that the story is fake if given enough time afterwards, or they might not. And if the story doesn't feel real, it isn't scary.
At SW64's highest narrative layer, the one in which there was a real nintendo 64 game that had to be pulled from stores, there is never fourth wall breaking. The game insists the whole way through that this really happened.
A layer down, inside the nintendo 64 game, the fourth wall is broken constantly. Developers left their notes and bugs and easter eggs and murder footage scattered everywhere. There is no attempt at all to suspend the audience's disbelief about there being a beaver man trapped on an island.
So when you get to the dwellers, don't get me wrong, I think they're really cool, but they aren't scary because the game never gave you a chance to suspend your disbelief. The skull mask guy from the cleaned version of the game is actually scarier because that version is structured like a conventional game instead of a meta ARG thing.
Overall, I don't dislike it. It's a competently executed attempt to make the games that are depicted in creepypasta real. But it doesn't cause the same emotions as other games with monsters that chase you.

When I played Shipwrecked 64 the second task in the plaza bugged for me for whatever reason, or I got super lucky, and the dwellers never spawned.
And I was heavily praising the game because with the music and travelling through an area where you just fought for your life, instead it was now almost serene.
It felt a lot like the classic resident evil save rooms. Where yes you technically still weren’t safe(not in the game universe anyway), it was a time to take a breath. Reel yourself back in and pull yourself together. And I feel like the batteries were the perfect thing, taking just long enough to set yourself back to zero.
It really felt like you had just beaten the hardest part of the game, and you were prepared for whatever was next and I was so ready to hardcore praise this aspect of the game.
But then it turned out enemies still spawn during that and my game never spawned them so fuck me and this whole rant I just wasted five minutes writing.

1d66 Underwater Locations
11. Lair of an undersea dragon, a cave full of treasure and hot steam.
12. Kraken’s nest, built from shipwrecks and driftwood.
13. A wreck of an eerie, glowing ship that emits dangerous (magical?) radiation.
14. A dark sea floor vent that provides energy to large, eyeless creatures who have never felt the warmth of the sun.
15-16. A broad stretch of open ocean, home to a group of giant sharks.
21-22. An encampment of well armed merfolk who are wary of strangers.
23-24. The lair of a coven of sea dwelling witches, known to be dangerous but only if you cross them.
25-26. A deep ravine with treacherously fast currents.
31-36. A kelp forest, teeming with all kinds of sea life.
41-46. A brightly colored reef where many tiny fish and other creatures make their homes.
51-52. The underside of a pier, where merfolk occasionally meet with surface dwellers to make small trades.
53-54. A wide canyon with interesting rock formations and scenic views. An excitable merfolk park ranger runs a small visitor center near the edge, though visitors seem few and far between.
55-56. Stone ruins from an ancient city. The sea serpent that makes its home here is aloof, but not dangerous.
61-62. A kelp farm run by a family of friendly merfolk.
63. A bubble enclosing a tower, in which lives an eccentric but ultimately well-intentioned wizard.
64. A small city on the sea floor, populated mostly by sentient sea turtles.
65. A huge sunken chest, the size of a house. It’s full of oversized treasure that clearly once belonged to a Giant.
66. An inexplicable motel, with reasonable prices. Wet and dry rooms available, comfortable beds, free breakfast.

So I turned them into Dwellers
It started with Smallfeather but I had an idea for Draven and then I did all of them
Smallfeather
Slower than Olive, faster than Giovani
Has a blindspot on his right, but really sharp sight on his left
Can jump
Sidebar appearance, but only ever on the right side
After chases end he sticks around barrels he suspects you might have gone into (he doesn't wander off)
Extras: Thin fabric of of scar tissue leaks blood and starling matter, bleeds a lot, leaves (bloody) footprints that fade after like a second
Draven
Fast as Giovani
Can't jump
When spotted his eyes become a spotlight
You can't hide from him when you're in his spotlight (there is a guarantee he will break whatever barrel he sees you go into)
Light can alert other nearby dwellers too
Extras: Rattling noises when walking, teeth growths, tooth knuckles
Reena
Despawns and respawns often
Uses sidebars a lot
Fast as giovani
Can jump
Mimics both barrels and computers
Can mimic other dwellers (her appearance changes, not her voice)
When you're spotted by her while she's mimicking someone else, she'll revert but also teleport over the dweller she was mimicking (both chase you)
Loading
Fast as Blot
Can jump
The more you look in his direction the more your screen distorts
Also during chases, the closer he gets the more your screen distorts
If the chase goes for more than 10 seconds, Loading drops to all fours and doubles his speed
Best hearing and sight sensitivity
Phoenix
Can jump
Fast as Brandon
Breaks barrels (Certainly if she sees you go into one. Even if she doesn't see you, the further away you are from her when you hide the lower chance she breaks the barrel anyways)
Moving vertically up is slowed (going up ramps)
Contrary, she falls fast and shakes the screen when landing nearby
shows up in sidebar
Very sensitive!
Uses your mic so don't scream
leaves blood trails
fade over time
fresher ones are sensitive (if touched she hears it and comes over)
smart too (remembers where she caught you)
If you try to play tapes to lure her away she will spawn near it but not stay near the noise source
she also does the all fours thing (also after 10s)
Brings up windows too (1st window is always guarantee a warning about the mic mechanic)
Words sometimes pop up on screen like Loading's distortion
Sometimes throws barrels at you -^^-
Player would fall and slow, but gets back up again (takes about 1.25 seconds)
Dodgeable though!
I went a little crazy with the exposed starling matter features I don't even think that's what they're supposed to look like but Hey it was fun to draw

I had a dream last night where Atsuover was playing shipwrecked 64 and being harassed by the olive dweller and the olive dweller only and she posted one of those clips where it’s like an extremely cut off scream on her alt on twitter and it was hilarious
