☕️ the overtake of maxiel by lestappen as the primary max ship

I think it's more interesting to analyse this with what's happening to carlando slowly being overtaken by landoscar as primary lando ship slowly and the tldr is ships change when dominant perceptions of the character changes. (obviously all the ships listed here are still hugely popular, nobody felled off, I'm talking about a change in trends)

when DTS first came out, daniel was already primed to be the star. he was the personality, he was funny, handsome, likeable and the story of future world champion vs talented young teammate the team is prioritising is compelling. max, on the other hand, was this young and brash, hungry for winning at any cost, seemingly asshole but then surprise he has a tragic childhood backstory and what he really needs is to be loved (cock in hole) to fix him. if you watch the teammate compilations from that era, maxiel just makes sense. max who is 😠 on DTS, is googly eyed giggling at everything DR says even when it's not funny. how can two guys who are so competitive on track yet have such a great relationship off track? they gotta fuck it out. prime rpf time.

carlando while less competitive has that same teammate narrative, older guy falling in the role of caretaker while the younger guy is socially awkward, anxious baby with their inside jokes (cabron) to be fixed with love (🍆🍩)

the reason why dando never popped off the way maxiel and carlando did because they already had each other's archetypes. lando already had the older teammate top with carlos and daniel already had the younger teammate to charm with max, so dando never got to get big before lando started beating DR and DR wasn't a competitive teammate so the narrative was a lesser one

come 2022. max verstappen is reigning world champion. DR has not only not won any, but is currently flopping at mclaren. the influx of new f1 fans after the whirlwind of a season that was 2021 and DTS's popularity has exploded. and max's competition now is the pretty boy from Ferrari. the narrative of DR fixing Max who is 🥺 from bad parenting tag my behated just doesn't add up. That story is already from 3 teammates ago. Max is now the guy to beat, he's the guy who is winning. He's big, broad, confident and dominating the grid. I will give lestappies credit here, they ran such a potent propaganda campaign that if you were a new fan in 2022 you would totally believe that charles in Ferrari is obviously going to win the championship next year and not this is a freak ferrari good year. Now charles is the 🥺 one with an even more tragic backstory and looking so beautifully devastated after ferrari fucks up his races he was supposed to win, monaco! he is now the new hole 2 be fixed with love and max is the top now.

here's my hot take. lestappen probably wouldn't be as big if max had a more fandom approved fuckable teammate for a consistent amount of time. pierre and alex and checo in 2021 were teammates far too short to really get its own standing and compete with maxiel. and fandom never bit on chestappen because once again, daniel already filled that older teammate for max role. (and there's a whole thing ab beauty standards and perceived femininity and popular yaoi ships mirroring m/f dynamics)

why carlando is still going strong is because carlos and lando still frequently hang out, he was at his family's wedding, his dad praises lando all the time so new fans can see there's a whole boatload of lore to dig in. maxiel don't party in the same circles or hang out v much, so to a newer fan charles winking at max after pole is easier to get into.

but the surge in landoscar popularity is because lando's now certified frat boy DJ and now oscar is the younger, super competitive teammate who has a kind of crush on lando, they're both cute! now oscar is the kind of socially awkward always sleepy one, while lando's partying with the whole grid. the lestappen and landoscar appeal of the theyre Equals and "idiots in love" shedding off their previous wide eyed anxious virgins in f1 characterization for the new era, as their perception by fandom grows so does the ship

*obvious addendums: does this mean every maxiel ship is top daniel? no ofc not, but it was the popular narrative to the point writing bottom daniel was subversive

I personally enjoy lestappen as switches but the more they follow bottom charles/top max as canon the less I idgaf it

She started as just a cutie fiancée trying her best, turns out she's also a swordfighting genius, very under pressure to perform feminity in the Victorian Rose type of way. Fandom crucifies her bc she's Ciel's fiancée and they want him to be with his butler, Sebastian, the demon he sold his soul to for revenge

anime was a shitty canon divergent adaptation that butchered her character down to her "cutesy silly girly" persona, which obviously made the 2008 anime fans hate her with a passion (nothing wrong w being girly I'm just saying the adaptation made her super one dimensional) anyways fujoshis used to treat her as a villain because she's the fiance of Ciel,, who as u might know already was HEAVILY shipped with his butler, Sebastian back then (now it's kinda looked badly upon, nice tbh that ship sucks ass xD) She's a bit similar to Misa Amane from death note in the way she was treated. (Like an obstacle the yaoi ship must overcome rather than a person)

she's my silly little rabbit! i could gush about her character but i'll keep it short and just say that she's really well written and one of the best characters in the series. anyways she's ciel's fiance and she's like, rightfully annoying as any other 13 yr old girl would be but the fanbase fucking crucified her for even existing. she gets demonized for being 'annoying', but then ciel gets yaoishipped with an even more annoying guy. there is 100% an argument that lizzie/ciel is weird bc they're cousins (i personally don't ship it) but that falls flat when her detractors then ship the 13 yr old ciel with an eons old demon who Canonically looks like his father. the anime also never reached her main character development until years after its peak and that was only in a movie, so she really got the bad end of the stick here. not me though i had a giant crush on her when i was 12

Katara

Katara is constantly mistreated by the fans in favor of the Zukka ship (Zuko × Sokka.) They make her out to be mean, homophobic, and completely out of character just to add drama to the Zukka ship. In reality, Katara is very compassionate, and would never act that way toward anyone. 

Zutara was a popular ship but when zukka got popular over covid during the atla renaissance there were a million posts about how zutara was problematic while zukka was perfect usually for racist reasons. Meanwhile katara and sokka are siblings so it didn't even make sense. They did not have to be so illogically rude to her to ship zukka and it was weird

Katara is FANTASTIC I fucking love her to pieces she is so cool and yet the entirety of the ATLA fandom treats her like garbage because she “talks about her mom dying too much” (even though she BARELY does & also was parentified from a young age due to her mother’s death) and, of course, because she’s a more feminine women when compared to her counterparts. Even in the show itself she’s mistreated: she’s ALWAYS shown cooking for the rest of the gaang, doing their laundry, any ‘womanly’ task. She ends up with the guy who kissed her twice without her consent & who she never showed any real attraction to and apparently (despite being a badass warrior-doctor!!!) after the show ended she just… settled down in the South Pole and had a bunch of kids and never did anything else. She didn’t even get a statue :( Anyways during the ATLA renaissance, despite Zutara actually not being canon, people felt that Katara threatened the sanctity of the new almost entirely baseless yaoi ship, Zukka. Unfortunately for them, due to the fact that Katara and Sokka are siblings, the usual anti-Zutara arguments didn’t work as well. So they resorted to just… slaughtering her character. If she was lucky, they’d just make Katara a background character, wingwoman, &or throw her together with her canon love interest. If she was unlucky they’d do anything from make her homophobic (??) to killing her off! Fuck’s sake, she never even got a token spare-the-pairs wlw ship! Sorry for getting so heated, that whole debacle made me FUMING MAD.

I know that all of you have already voted but I'm still gonna give this a try.

This is the art of a woman who kept trying to break into a world of art. She studied in San Francisco. She studied in London. She painted the totem poles of villages near her. She painted churches and people in Victoria. She gave up and went to Paris to study more.

When she was 42, she opened a studio in Victoria. It failed. So she ran a boarding house for the next fifteen years. Finally, finally, someone saw one of her works and sent someone from the National Gallery of Canada to organize an exhibition, where she met the Group of Seven, a set of Canadian landscape painters that became iconic. And they loved her work.

But since she was a woman, she never really was a part. Can't have women in professional art groups in the 1920s. Doesn't matter that they were all her friends and at least once claimed she was a part of them. Never a part.

But now that she had friends, now that she had found someone willing to give her paintings a chance, she started painting again. At 57, she could finally do what she loved. And so she painted, and painted, and painted. At 63 she had her first solo art show. At 65, she had her first heart attack. At 68, she had a stroke and had to stop painting. She only got to do what she loved for eleven years, but she still made the most of it.

Unlike other landscape painters of the time, she didn't try to pretend that the forests she painted were Pristine and Empty. She painted empty forests, and clear-cut stumps; harbours and totem poles. I know she rolled a terrible matchup, and that y'all love the horror cafe, but here's a plea for all of you to give Emily Carr a second look. For me? Please?

SET EIGHT - ROUND ONE - MATCH ONE

"Blue Plate Special” (2017 - Jeff Lee Johnson) / ”Red Cedar” (1931 - Emily Carr)

BLUE PLATE SPECIAL: Very much a "scroll past it, scroll back up, scroll again, scroll up again" work for me. Every time I look at it(including this upload) I've caught something I missed before. It's not world-shaking, but it's not supposed to be. It's supposed to be a world that's just a little off. (@hugintheraven)

RED CEDAR: My dad has always hated The Group of Seven but especially Emily Carr, so I grew up with no real knowledge of any of their works. But one time I was looking at a tourist shop, and they had little tiny prints of Carr's work on wood, and I bought one that spoke to me. This isn't that one, but it is the first one I've been able to find that evokes similar feelings. I'm fond of realism but also impressionism, and Emily Carr's style sometimes evokes the same feelings to me. Red Cedar, specifically, brings to mind the feeling of hiking in the coastal woods. The colours of the trees, made more vivid by light drizzle. The way the canopy feels closed in, cutting you off from the sky. And even with the simplistic rendering of the cedar branches into a swirl, Carr still has the ubiquitous dead branches poking through. Just enough realism to balance out the modernist simplication. I uh have aphantasia; I can't picture things described by just words and my memory is complete shit, so when Carr's paintings remind me of the sense-memory of rainy woods, that's a major compliment. Why should I vote terrick in the unpopular/niche dndads shipping pole, you may ask. Well, here's my best attempt at consoladating why I ship terrick, things I love about them, and why I think they're a ship that should be significantly more popular than it is:

Narrative parallels in season 1

This one I think is fascinating! The kiddads went through a lot in the Forgotten Realms, and the fact that they're the only ones who can understand what they've been through has been the basis of a lot of fics and posts I've seen about them. But I would argue, Terry Jr and Nicky can understand each others experiences best.

They both had their memories messed with in the Forgotten Realms. Nicky obviously through the trial and the two dads, two timelines things, but vampire Terry Sr literally ate Terry Jr's positive memories of his father, and given how long he was there, Terry Jr probably only has faint or negative memories of the real Terry Sr. They also both have a dead parent that they can't mourn properly because of the memory thing. With Morgan, she's not dead anymore. Except Nicky remembers her dying, remembers grieving for her, and in many ways that Morgan is dead. Glenn himself says so. And for Terry, how do you mourn someone you don't remember? Who you know you grieved but can't understand why anymore. And that loving one dad feels like a betrayal to the other. For Terry Jr, loving Ron feels like forgetting Terry Sr, and for Nicky his two dads are actively antagonistic towards each other. The fact that they go through such similar things in the opposite direction is a really fun playground to play in, and being able to have that openness because they understand it better than the others I think ads an extra layer of intimacy.

2. They're canonically best friends.

Childhood best friends to lovers is a trope I adore. I think the notes of this post describe it well, as well as this fic I accidently wrote in Aether's inbox. They have the potential to be really incredibly fluffy together, even from a purely platonic perspective. But it also puts a really interesting spin on my next point:

3. The Betrayal

Ooooooooooo Terry Jr having been the one to shoot Nicky's arm off was a goldmine of angst potential I was not expecting. The fact that Terry was basically begging Glenn to kill him out of a guilt is something I have thought about a lot. A lot. This also makes Nicky's potential reaction to Terry's death incredibly interesting, especially since Terry Jr went to hell aka Nicky's house. Post-season 2 has a lot of room for divorced energy, as well as the navigation of learning to date someone you never fell out of love with, even though time has changed you both considerably.

There are a lot more reasons why I love this ship, and you should go check out the terrick tag on both AO3 and here on tumblr! AO3 especially has some amazing fics (I strongly recommend this fic by Cookies, the one that officalgleamstar wrote, and all of Aether's fics but especially this one) and then also some of mine. Tumblr is perfect for passionate ramblings, and is honestly 90% me and Aether talking to each other.

Some points on the Trump/Vance campaign’s immigrant smear. In the Trump campaign thus far, this is a hallmark event which defines the evolution of Trump’s politics.

(1) A conventional campaign would have made this all about immigration policy, but this doesn’t excite Trump’s base, gets bogged down in policy details and is vulnerable to the fact that Trump vetoed the consensus border-bill shepherded by Sen Jim Lankford (R-OK)

(2) Trump and Vance feel that making it racially focused is far more exciting to the base, insuring higher turnout of the core Trump constituency that was “invisible” to pollsters in 2016

(3) Trump/Vance want to provoke the Harris/Walz campaign into labeling this as “racist,” which it plainly is. This is because their base reacts violently to being called “racist.” It would stimulate them to possibly violent conduct (and Trump is clearly okay with that), but also to greater turnout.

(4) This effort draws heavily on techniques that were pioneered by the NSDAP propaganda arm under Joseph Goebbels in the period 1930-38

a. Target specific Volksgemeinschaft (ie, ethnic group). For the Nazis, this was Jews (who were characterized as being alien and vaguely Eastern European), Poles, Gypsies.

b. Talk about them as “vermin” (Volksschädling) as “disease carriers” and as “corrupters of the blood” (Blutschande), and as criminals. They are somehow less than fully human (minderwertiges Menschenmaterial).

c. Insist that they must be extirpated to preserve the honor and blood (Blut und Ehre) of the German race, or as Trump says, to avoid “corrupting the blood”

d. Incitement of mobs to seemingly spontaneous act of violence against the targeted groups (destroying storefronts, breaking windows, threats and intimidation targeting employers, random acts of violence) were characteristic of the Nazi operations. Note that we see every one of these things now happening in Springfield, OH

(5) The example taken from Springfield draws on all these features. Note it is traced to Drake Berentz, a local Neo Nazi well familiar with the German precedents

(6) “They’re eating your dogs, they’re eating your cats” draws on the original Blood Libel (Blutverleumdung) for inspiration, suggests depravity

(7) Note de-locatization. Where is Haiti? Trump suggested in his Palos Verdes remarks that he thought it was in Venezuela (“I’m going to round them up and ship them back to Venezuela”), whereas JD Vance in his remarks suggests somehow they are really from Africa. But where they come from doesn’t really matter; what matters is the color of their skin.

(9) Interesting dynamic between Vance and Trump on all of this. Vance breaks these approaches, tests them, and Trump follows up by backing him up and expanding on them.

(10) Weakness of the Trump/Vance approach. The NSDAP had a centrally managed and implemented plan under which propaganda organs answered to party leadership and targets were carefully selected and times. For Trump/Vance, however, the Lumpen element seems to drive things. It came up with both the Springfield and Aurora claims. Springfield was of course a highly undesirable option because it’s a Republican city in a Republican state. He is implicitly criticizing what the Ohio GOP has done. That creates problems inside Ohio. A more carefully crafted approach would have chosen a Democrat-run city and state for this operation.

Propaganda

i love knuckles. he used to be a selfish and notorious pirate until he crashed into a rock trying to track down a powerful gem and was abandoned by his crew. after that he became a coward, got a new crew, and spent all day throwing parties and doing absolutely nothing productive until getting involved in a multidimensional conflict to get all the pieces of something called the paradox prism, and now he's possibly going back to his old ways.

HIS SHIP IS BOUND FOR THE NORTH POLE BUT THEY GET STUCK IN THE ICE!! Walton sees the Creature and then later sees Victor and nurses him back to health. He writes letters to his sister about his travels and Victor's ENTIRE LIFE STORY.

15. what would your wol be if they weren't the wol? what would they do as a job or career? would they be happier?

Oooh, I like this one. There are a few possible answers to that.

Talia was raised from a young age with the expectation of pursuing a military career, so the idea of fight, fight, fighting for others is deeply ingrained into her psyche. She was drawn to adventuring after fleeing Garlemald for a reason, but man did she love it when she picked up a fishing pole and got to crafting little trinkets in goldsmithing. She might have settled down in Ul'dah anyway after getting there to join the Gladiators just to set up shop as a jeweler, and finding Drusilla and the other expatriates would have made it feel more like a home. I think in that case, she still would have trained as a reaper, and wouldn't be able to resist picking her scythe up to protect people and stick her nose into trouble, but it would be on a much smaller scale.

There's also the possibility for a Darkest Timeline, where she doesn't get her rude wakeup call to shake her of the propaganda and flee Garlemald. I don't know if Hydaelyn would still call out to her, but she'd probably ignore it and keep quiet about it even if she did. Best case scenario, she dies in combat somewhere or is executed as a traitor for refusing to follow some order at some time that was beyond the pale if she was ever shipped too far away from home. If she managed not to wash out, though, there's the very real possibility the Emperor would have caught wind of her, and with her brain full of propaganda and her heart full of loyalty despite her doubts, she would have been primed for that pitch to join the Ascians' cause. She'd probably have joined under the same naive line of thinking that kept her in Garlemald, that she could mitigate the damage done if she just worked with them, believing sincerely that the goal was a better world for everyone.

Soroban spoke next, his voice with the gravitas and weight of long training.

"But the Littlest Kojin is the mightier fisher in this or any sea! Once hooked, no sea-beast can escape her! Planting her feet, she heaved on the pole, shimmer-blue in her hands - heaved until the skies rang with her cries!"

Shio joins in to conclude the tale, her voice salt-roughened and less resonant than her brothers'.

"And with one final mighty shout, the Littlest Kojin pulled one final time - and the sea-beast was pulled from the waves, its monstrous bulk blotting out the sky! As the scaled body landed on the sand, shaking the cliffs, the Littlest Kojin broke into a grin and laughed - long and loud. With this, she could feed the whole Ruby Sea for a moon or more! And so, she was satisfied, and settled in next to her catch for sleep."

Propaganda Under Cut

Katara

Katara is constantly mistreated by the fans in favor of the Zukka ship (Zuko × Sokka.) They make her out to be mean, homophobic, and completely out of character just to add drama to the Zukka ship. In reality, Katara is very compassionate, and would never act that way toward anyone. 

Zutara was a popular ship but when zukka got popular over covid during the atla renaissance there were a million posts about how zutara was problematic while zukka was perfect usually for racist reasons. Meanwhile katara and sokka are siblings so it didn't even make sense. They did not have to be so illogically rude to her to ship zukka and it was weird

Katara is FANTASTIC I fucking love her to pieces she is so cool and yet the entirety of the ATLA fandom treats her like garbage because she “talks about her mom dying too much” (even though she BARELY does & also was parentified from a young age due to her mother’s death) and, of course, because she’s a more feminine women when compared to her counterparts. Even in the show itself she’s mistreated: she’s ALWAYS shown cooking for the rest of the gaang, doing their laundry, any ‘womanly’ task. She ends up with the guy who kissed her twice without her consent & who she never showed any real attraction to and apparently (despite being a badass warrior-doctor!!!) after the show ended she just… settled down in the South Pole and had a bunch of kids and never did anything else. She didn’t even get a statue :( Anyways during the ATLA renaissance, despite Zutara actually not being canon, people felt that Katara threatened the sanctity of the new almost entirely baseless yaoi ship, Zukka. Unfortunately for them, due to the fact that Katara and Sokka are siblings, the usual anti-Zutara arguments didn’t work as well. So they resorted to just… slaughtering her character. If she was lucky, they’d just make Katara a background character, wingwoman, &or throw her together with her canon love interest. If she was unlucky they’d do anything from make her homophobic (??) to killing her off! Fuck’s sake, she never even got a token spare-the-pairs wlw ship! Sorry for getting so heated, that whole debacle made me FUMING MAD.

Suki

she is a kickass warrior and she is so so beautiful and kind and outstanding in every way but gets thrown in the trash frequently because people love the gays (zuko and sokka)(I like them but you cannot remove suki from the equation she is integral)

My girl is a whole fucking badass warrior, who has an equally bad ass warrior boyfriend, who gets completely ignored and disregarded by the Sukka or whatever the Zuko/Sokka fandom is called. They could a done a cool poly thing but nah, fully forget about my girl's existence. Mad disrespectful 

a great warrior and leads a group of women warriors at kyoshi island. intelligent but empathetic. wields a fan. a tough feminist and is ALSO part of the atla GAANG @ fandom and also dear god please stop sidelining/ignoring her/forgetting/killing her @ fandom) and she deserves better in the narrative too.

Character 1

Name: Joel Party: Team Kill Relationship to party: Party member and summoned helper of the Undead Cleric

What makes them the best NPC: Joel is an 8 foot tall skeleton that leaves a trail of blood everywhere he goes, what's not to love? His entire purpose is actually to fish for his Summoner, who longs to be a fisherman but has no hands. He's rather skilled at it, but when he's not wielding a fish pole he's just as good at slinging a sword! At night, he spends his time standing over his summoner, who's deathly afraid of the moon. Although he can't talk to any other members of the party besides his summoner, he brings plenty of life (even though he lacks it himself) to the party!

Character 2

Name: Khorush the Destroyer, Speaker-to-Animals Party: Jax's Rovers (Rovers system) Relationship to party: Hired mercenary & ship's chef

What makes them the best NPC: Khorush is a massive 8-legged, 4-eyed alien creature with thick fur known as a "spider-bear". Can stand from all eight legs to just the two hind ones, measuring ~12ft tall when stood on four. Feet not being used for standing are prehensile and can pick up objects, etc. He also wears a minimal amount of Iron Age style armor, and travels with a 7ft greatsword and an iron frying pan. Human is a favored delicacy among his species. Our space rovers originally encountered him while visiting cold, snow-covered planet. After our alien member convinced him not to eat the rest of our crew, ze ended up hiring him as part the group. In addition to being a formidable warrior and a cultural ambassador he also prides himself on being an excellent cook, and is knowledgeable of many cuisines across the galaxy. When our rovers team was stationed at the imperial base Khorush spent the entire time impressing the kitchen chefs with his culinary talents.
