Inspired by today's SAMS episode, Dark Sun getting that shoulder rub he oh so deserves
Provided by Vanessa cuz of @witchysolfan's Automation Heart AU. Dressed up like Princess Quest cuz.. they live in a fortress and I'm sure part of her enrichment is to get to play dress-up and cosplay all to her heart's desire. I'm sure Dark Sun doesn't mind seeing his pet human dress up.
Enjoy!

Damn, why is all the good HSR lore locked behind NPC conversations? Was I really supposed to grill a random shopkeeper in Exalting Sanctum to figure out that the Luofu’s role in the Xianzhou Alliance is basically to be the Trailblazer ship?
Apparently yes!!
Luofu’s bringing in immigrants from other Xianzhou ships (not the least being Baiheng, Yingxing, Fu Xuan, and Sushang). They’re welcoming outworlders. They help planets that were afflicted by abominations get back on their feet. They’ve got trade and cultural exchange.
So that’s why pushing them into an alliance with the Astral Express makes sense. They’re probably the only ship in the fleet that would have welcomes the Astral Express in the first place, and no, that’s not because of Dan Heng.
It also explains a lot about why Jing Yuan decided to become the General. He really is living his dream of travelling the stars and seeing new places - just, with more stress and responsibility than a Galaxy Ranger would have.
#Dammit HSR#Jing Yuan#Honkai Star Rail#HSR#don’t even get me started on how Xuling is a creepy deserted automated ship#WAS NO ONE GOING TO MENTION THAT#Actually they all sound pretty interesting except the Yuque#Tech bro ship can stay where it is#Fu Xuan already rescued herself

Today's mood:
Satisfaction - I assembled a folding table cart by myself with no major issues!
Mild frustration - my work email migrated or upgraded or integrated or did some other enterprise level upgrade (shows how much attention i was paying in the info meeting) and it broke all my email rules. Outlook users might think I'm being extra, but I get upwards of 700 emails every day, and I'd drown without rules.
Amused Puzzlement - I have the will to write again, but my brain has a sense of humor because it's currently just shipping. Maybe the novelty of it is what's giving me the drive.
#I get automated emails from the equipment i monitor so it's mostly just#“[MACHINE] completed a self-test overnight.”#the computer equivalent of “Twelve o'clock and all's well!”#as for the shipping i've already decided that i will indulge my own preferences#and if i ever publish it you'll probably see what i mean

Essential Auxiliary Machinery on Ship
1. Generators
Generators are the heartbeat of a ship’s electrical system. They provide electrical power for various onboard systems, such as lighting, navigation equipment, communication systems, and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning). Depending on the ship’s size and power requirements, multiple generators may be installed to ensure redundancy and continuous power supply during extended voyages.
2. Boilers
Boilers are essential for producing steam, which is utilized for various purposes on board. Steam is used for heating fuel oil and other fluids, running steam turbines for power generation, and operating various machinery and auxiliary machinery equipment, such as steam-driven pumps and winches.
3. Air Compressors
Air compressors generate compressed air used to power pneumatic tools, such as wrenches and chipping hammers, and operate pneumatic control systems. They also provide compressed air for starting main engines and auxiliary engines.
4. Purifiers
Fuel and lube oil purifiers play a critical role in maintaining the quality of fuels and lubricants used onboard. These machines remove impurities, water, and solids from fuel and oil, ensuring smooth engine operation and prolonging the life of critical machinery.
5. Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems
Refrigeration and air conditioning systems are vital for maintaining the temperature of provisions, perishable cargo, and living spaces. These systems use refrigerants and cooling coils to control temperature, humidity, and air quality throughout the ship.
6. Ballast Water Treatment Systems
To maintain stability and maneuverability, ships require ballast water to be pumped in or out as cargo is loaded or unloaded. Ballast water treatment systems are responsible for purifying and treating the ballast water to prevent the spread of invasive species and maintain marine ecosystem health.
7. Sewage Treatment Plants
Sewage treatment plants are responsible for processing and treating wastewater generated onboard. They help ensure that treated effluent meets international environmental standards before it is discharged into the sea.
8. Bilge Water Separators
Bilge water separators remove oil and other contaminants from the bilge water, a mix of seawater and oil that collects in the lower parts of the ship. The clean water is then discharged, while the separated oil is collected for proper disposal.
9. Incinerators
Incinerators are used to burn solid waste generated onboard, such as paper, cardboard, and non-recyclable plastics. Proper incineration reduces waste volume and ensures compliance with environmental regulations.
10. Water Makers
Water makers use reverse osmosis or distillation processes to convert seawater into potable water for drinking, cooking, and various onboard applications. They are especially vital for long voyages where access to freshwater sources may be limited.
Conclusion
The auxiliary machinery found on ships plays a crucial role in maintaining the vessel’s efficiency, safety, and comfort during journeys at sea. From power generation to waste management and water purification, each system contributes to the smooth operation and sustainability of modern ships. The continuous advancement of auxiliary machinery technology further enhances the capabilities and environmental performance of ships, making them safer, greener, and more reliable for maritime transportation across the globe.

One bit of worldbuilding in the BattleTech AU I’ve been picking at is the MCR, as I really do have to explain why four dipshits, only two of whom were in a navy, can run a ship by themselves beyond “fly it somewhere we can pick up more crew”, so, here goes I guess
The Tachi-class was part of a design experiment that resulted from finding an SLDF AI research facility on one of McEvedy’s moons, so naturally, it and the Donnager-class have significantly smaller crew requirements than normal, because they’re very automated (though less so than in The Expanse canon because this is still 80s Retrofuture)
Another aspect of Mickie AI research is that there’s a lot of PBIs in Congress that really want to end the dominance of the MechWarrior (Bobbie’s dad isn’t in Congress but he’s definitely one of these PBIs with a Complex About It, leading to so much drama during family dinner night), so there’s a lot of funding going to drone ‘Mech research and nothing much to show for it (because if the SLDF could have a computer pilot a ‘Mech, they’d have done it)
#the expanse#battletech#expanse battletech au#honestly Mr Draper being a ground pounder with a superiority complex in what I’d already got figured out#is what led me to think ‘hm. could explain how automated their ships are. AI research meant to make drone ‘mechs benefitting elsewhere’#all because the hamburger boys want to RETVRN to the pre-Mackie world

Ariane changing the timing of a cycle on the Penrose to more closely mimick a cycle on Vinetan for Elster even though neither of them had ever actually been to that planet but because Elster has the accent and therefore might, on some level, find it comfortable and familiar makes me insane
#also this means the cycle messages were literally just automated in response to the ships internal clock lol#no one was sending them anything#3000 cycles would take happened way earlier if anyone was actually keeping track of the ship but they weren't

lower decks s3 finale with the steel chair to ai being used for the wrong things
#danni watches lower decks#(strictly speaking having an automated ship to send into battles isn't??? that bad of an idea??? stops people from dying#however using them for exploration and contact with other planets is uh yeah stupid as hell)#i am here late but lol lwd was here months before this issue got Really mainstream

Might just start blogging about my silly little gbf teams I love most of them a whole lot
#I’m just really having a good time with gbf now that I’ve gotten the most annoying parts automated#(seriously every beginner guide just glosses over the pro skip function)#all it took was three separate attempts but now that I’m having fun#it really recaptures the magic of what made me play azur lane for so long#(I still love azur lane but it’s lost a little of its sheen now that it’s just dailies with a new ship I can really tism about every#couple months)

head in my hands hal 9000 is not a robot... he's an artificial intelligence...
#if you really want brevity computer is also accurate i guess#you could concievably make an argument that due to controlling all the systems of the discovery and by some interpretations *being* the ship#he fulfills such robot criteria as performing complex automated tasks#however he was designed for neither one specific task nor fully automatic/remote controlled operation#(being a GENERAL artificial intelligence)#and thus is not a robot#also robots are associated with a degree of mobility whether a robot 'dog' or an assembly line arm#and the mobility offered by the discovery's propulsion has little versatility and can only affect the ship as a whole#umm if anyone else comes up with reasons hal could be considered a robot (by the merriam webster definition which i am using)#or if you have an alternate definition of robot you think is novel#i would be thrilled to engage with you#but for now i remain firm#2001 aso#aso#2001 a space odyssey

#this is what i believe in#sorta related i was reading an article a few weeks ago#where they discussed the idea of using dirigible drones to load and unload cargo ships off the coast#instead of waiting for them to enter port#at least partly#i just love airships and i'm hoping they make a comeback#also on a related note i'm just really excited to see how automation/robotics changes logistics#things are about to get really efficient#logistics have largely been the same for like a century#we're about to witness a supply chain revolution#and at all levels of the supply chain#just imagine#autonomous cargo ships unloading at autonomous ports#ships waiting in line are unloaded by drones#then fleets of autonomous trucks#and revitalized trains#then smaller drones to directly deliver packages from stores/warehouses to consumers
