this tweet is absolutely one of the milder ones i've seen on my feed which just proves i need to stop looking at twitter but this example of shipping goggles leading to basic misinterpretations of arcane season 1 scenes that are quite cut and dry thematically might be the straw that breaks my back

what do you MEAN Viktor was being gentle. what do you MEAN viktor was calm. he was not. Viktor says "you... ordered this? why?" he's surprised, offended, and sounds almost betrayed at the idea that jayce would order the blockade. viktor is confused, then flabbergasted, then angry, then furious. there is a gradient between "gentle and calm" and "screaming spitting mad" and viktor is somewhere in the middle of that gradient, but just because he isn't screaming and yelling at jayce, that doesn't mean he was either gentle or calm

"what difference does that make?" is also not calm - it's showing that Jayce has not been fully mask-off prejudiced in front of Viktor before, and Viktor is so thrown that Jayce would and does take the mask off in this moment, showing that Jayce is not so different from the average prejudiced citizen of Piltover despite being Viktor's friend, that he is genuinely asking what is going through Jayce's head. Viktoris trying to make Jayce make some sense, but the words do still show confusion and distress

and then "I'm from the undercity" IS angry, now that Viktor realizes what Jayce is saying and why. he is not being gentle or calm or even all that understanding towards Jayce - Viktor is hurt and angry and he lashes out to make Jayce think twice about what he's just said, though the damage has been done because Jayce's words and actions have combined to move us and Viktor towards an understanding of who Jayce is and what he truly believes when his back is up against the wall

also i can't count how many times people have re-interpreted Viktor slapping Jayce's hand away as a cute funny thing he does, rather than an act of anger - frustrated, righteous anger

the reason reading this made me so frustrated is because it's one more step toward the broader fandom's continuing re-imagining of Viktor as a mild, sweet, often passive character

and to take it one step further in what i've observed, it helps re-imagine Viktor as someone who is versed enough in the prejudices Zaunites face on the daily to easily handle Jayce's prejudiced words and behavior. this serves not only to make Viktor sweeter, gentler, and frankly smaller than he is in canon - especially in season 1 - but also, depending on the day, may try to make Viktor more "perfect" and noncombatant, ignorant or completely separated from the concept of the Piltover/Zaun conflict, a more "ideal" activist (an aspect of his character that is implied in season 1 and then is unfortunately all but abandoned in season 2), or just more well-versed in Zaun vs. Piltover sociopolitics, which he simply is not. Viktor is both clever, and also a messier, less heroic character than all that, while still being a target of Jayce's prejudice directly but mostly, usually, indirectly. and Viktor does not perfectly understand this. he only knows and sees enough to be offended and frustrated throughout the story

there's having one's own interpretations of canon, and then there's mischaracterizing consistently and constantly, leading to the state of the fandom today where it's increasingly difficult to have nuanced conversations about characters like Viktor or Jayce. why not ship jay//vik but WITH Viktor's anger, the complications, and the messiness

or is that not an option now that the writing of season 2 glossed over any difficult social or political concepts that did exist in season 1

Is it perfect? No. Is it a million times better than my first book? Yes.

I decided I’m going to bind all of GallaPlacidia’s Drarry fics, so I had to go out and buy more navy linen so it’d all match. I also added a title to the spine of Ship of Theseus, but it’s also possible I might just rebind it. Or not. Maybe I should keep it to show how far I will have come by the time I’m done with this project.

Anyway, it’s not just the binding (and neatness thereof) that’s improved, but also the typesetting. I learned a lot while setting book #2 (still a mystery until the author receives it) and so I’m much happier with how this one looks inside.

On to the next!

Gently, ever so gently, Shouyou sets down the mug that he had left on the coffee table in the sink with a soft click against the metal of the sink’s bowl. He sighed, the chill of being barefoot on the cold tile floor rushing up through his feet and into the rest of his body. He was standing in a white t-shirt that didn’t belong to him, but it did now. Everything in this house belonged to him now. Staring at the lone mug, plate, and set of utensils when there used to be a pair of each made a pang strike in Shouyou’s heart.

Viktor and Orianna is really good but also REALLY BAD for the both of them. But then-again, that’s literally just any ship with Viktor “What emotional repression and unprocessed grief?” Pahlen.

Orianna, as a robot, is so off-putting to literally everyone ever except her dad. That’s canon. (Also: yes, like, I know new Orianna lore exists and is different a little bit but I don’t dig its message (a person’s humanity fades away if they replace “enough” of themselves with metal - it’s not even written as Ori’s brain being the reason her personality changes, but a gradual change as she gets more metal overall. Also Corin in that is written really weirdly... like he makes her so she will literally die if he doesn’t take a key out of a safe to wind up her lungs. There’s being a protective parent, and there’s literally holding your daughter’s life hostage and having the narrative never really criticize this lol) and I also pretty much only write with @amechanicalgirl, who has robot Ori and human Ori be two entirely separate people. As they should be, imo.)

Hoo, okay, sorry, that was a tangent. But an important one, I think. Anyways, as I see it, Orianna’s story is not about having once been socially accepted and someone with social graces, and having then lost that as she transitions into a robot. (Also her becoming a full robot rather than being a replica screws over Viktor’s storyline anyways. Thanks new lore.) It’s about being a replica, knowing that you are a replica after a certain point (I do think Orianna is sentient/sapient/whatever term you wish to use, otherwise I wouldn’t ship Viktor with her lol) and being very aware that the only person who loves you - your father - is desperately trying to pretend that you’re a woman who was buried years ago because you’re a construct of grief.

Everyone else thinks you’re weird and uncanny and probably should be scrapped. Except Viktor, who acknowledges that you cannot be the woman that you’re supposed to be - the technology is not there, he should know. But he certainly seems to think that you can be a person, someone distinct and different from the first Orianna Reveck. What’s a lonely robot to do but cling to that, in her own odd and foreign ways?

And in Orianna, Viktor sees an attempt at perfection that sadly fell through. She still has emotions, somehow. But she understands him, doesn’t she? More than anyone else could. No humans could fully understand who he is, how he still feels... He’s found someone. And if Orianna wants to try to act out being human around him, he can tolerate that.

Perhaps he can even like it.

I ship Viktori. Why? Because they have such a genuine bond between the two they develop each others characters so well and they just clicked together. If Yuri had been a female and it were a straight relationship, i would feel just the same. If anyone feels like the sex of the characters change how you support the relationship: please step away and just keep going until I can't see you or your homophobic bullshit 😊

Fidetentia (Childhood!Friends)

Greeting lovely people, 

Remember a while back when I said I was participating in the Harmony 3K Bingo Challenge? Well, I finally started the posting of the result of that challenge, starting with Fidetentia. 

Fidetentia is the first installment of the Fidetentia, Amortentia, and Other Potions of Note series that is all Harmony-centric and part of filling up my board and reaching my 1 Million for Black Hermione goal by November of this year. 

Based on my bingo card, you can guess that this work is related to the work I plan for Amortentia, but what you don’t know is that I plan to complete the entire board. I figure I should shake things up from my Viktory party and acknowledge that I have sailed many ships and will continue to do so. 

This piece is in three parts and I am quite happy with the way I have set this up to serve as a base for the following sections. I plan to post updates like this on the day the series starts to post and the chapters will come out at regular intervals after that. Probably once a day like this one, but maybe not. 

I’m already working on the next installment of this series. No spoilers, but it’s not Amortentia. :)
