A coffee shop opens up a block away from the gym, and Misty decides it is the most exciting thing to happen to her since she stopped traveling.

She doesn’t visit every day, but visits enough that they know her Usual and slip her a free muffin or coffee cake at least once a week, so it doesn’t take long for her to claim the location as Hers™.

She’s there one lazy, rainy Sunday afternoon, sipping on a vanilla chai latte and completing some paperwork, when he walks in. She almost misses him, so deep in the music playing in her ear buds and the file folder of her battle reports, that she only looks up at the bright flash of yellow fur and a red cap popping out of his coat when he flips back the hood of his jacket.

“Ash?!” she cries.

Ash starts and spins to face her in surprise, Pikachu immediately leaping out of his coat with a “Pikachupi!” and jumps onto her arms.

“Hey, Misty!” he laughs, grinning. “I didn’t expect to see ya here! I was just on my way over to the gym, actually. Just wanted to grab a hot chocolate or something to help warm me up first.” He gives the cafe a quick glance. “This place is nice. Is it new?”

She knows her mouth is hanging open as he stands there all casually without a care in the world, but she manages to snap it shut. “Ash, what are you doing here?” she demands. “You’re not supposed to be back in Kanto for months!”

He blinks at her in surprise and chuckles. “I’m here for your birthday, duh,” he explains, raising an eyebrow as if to check if she forgot that important little piece of information. “It’s on Tuesday, right? I told you I’d celebrate with you this year.”

He had said that, she remembers, when he hadn’t been able to call her until three days after the day the year before.

She thought he just meant a phone call.

“You don’t already have plans or anything, do you?” he asks, his eyes wide and nervous, like she wouldn’t cancel on freaking royalty if her time could be spent with Ash Ketchum instead, and she smiles at him softly.

“Nope, just a boring dinner with my sisters and Tracy.”

He grins. She feels her cheeks flush. “Think they’d mind if I crash the party?”

Misty scratches Pikachu’s ears, finding it hard to look at Ash without grinning love a lovesick loon. “I bet they’ll squeeze in a chair for the World Champion.” She smirks. “And if not, you can just sit on Tracy’s lap.” He makes a face and she bursts into laughter.

“I dunno…” he drawls after a moment, “shouldn’t Daisy be the one sitting on Tracy’s lap?” She’s the one to make a face this time, and Ash laughs uproariously, attracting the attention of a few of the other customers. “So they’re still together, huh?” he asks, a goofy little smile on his face.

“Yes,” she answers tersely, letting Pikachu jump onto her shoulder so she can bus her table and take her coffee to go. “And I try not to think about it, thank you very much.”

“Aw,” Ash says, clearly amused more than anything. “I think they’re sweet. Oh, hey, do you mind if I get a hot chocolate real quick?” He gestures to the counter.

She waves him over, giving him the okay, and stands off to the side while he puts in his order. It doesn’t take long for one of the employees Misty knows well to poke her head over a stack of cups and grin wolfishly.

“He’s cute,” she says.

“Can it,” Misty snaps back, but can’t stop the smirk that sneaks its way onto her lips.

His drink is ready, so they grab the cup and walk out the door, both so engrossed in catching up, neither notices the message written on Ash’s cup in thick, black marker:

‘ASK HER OUT! 🖤’
