A Cheat Sheet to Gintama References
Tumblr media
Have you ever said to yourself "I want to get into Gintama, but I want to understand all of the references?"
Well fear not, for I have a cheat sheet for a lot of the references. Not all of them, because I'd never finish this post. But there are a lot of references the series makes, and as non-native Japanese viewers, a lot of things are lost on us. That's not even getting to things that are lost due to the language barrier. So here it is: a (not so) comprehensive list of series that Gintama references!
Manga
Tumblr media
Dragon Ball (Bonus points if it involves dunking on Yamcha.)
Fist of the North Star (Complete with a copyright-friendly version of You Wa Shock!)
Saint Seiya (an entire episode hinges on Gintoki being afraid of getting sued by Toei because of their constant Saint Seiya references)
City Hunter (I wouldn't be surprised if City Hunter was an inspiration for Gintama. Like Gintoki as a main character is what happens if you were to combine Kenshin Himura and Ryo Saeba into a single man. And then you gave said man Kakashi's hair.)
Rurouni Kenshin (Gintama is best described as the post Big 3 answer to Rurouni Kenshin. While One Piece and Shaman King are the true successors to RK, Gintama is the series most similar in terms of aesthetics... minus the modern tech in Meiji-era Japan.)
One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach (I'm folding all three into one line due to their nature as Jump's Big Three. Not helping things is that Gintama ran around the same time as all three.)
JoJo's Bizarre Adventures
Death Note
To Love Ru (Yes, really.)
SKET Dance (Not surprising as SKET Dance mangaka Kenta Shinohara was Sorachi's apprentice at one point)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Lupin III
Golgo 13
Kinnikuman (the thing Ultimate Muscle is based off of)
Doraemon
Sazae-san
Berserk
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K (Ask me about how Gintama helped screw Saiki K out of an English Dub for Season 2)
Anime
Tumblr media
Mobile Suit Gundam (It helps that Sunrise/Bandai Namco Pictures produced the Gintama anime, because there are a lot of Gundam references in particular. You also don't get the Renho arc without Sunrise producing the anime.)
Mobile Suit Victory Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (Specifically the fact that Shinpachi and Tsukuyo's voice actors are in each series respectively)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Especially if it involves MADAO, as MADAO shares a voice actor with Gendo Ikari)
Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and My Neighbor Totoro (I'm highlighting these three Ghibli movies in particular due to how often they are referenced throughout the series.)
The Brave Franchise (Specifically The Brave Express Might Gaine and The King of Braves GaoGaiGar)
Patlabor (Yes really, and SKET Dance is partially to thank for this one)
Video Games
Tumblr media
Dragon Quest (Specifically DQ III & IV, this series gets referenced a lot once Tama is introduced)
Sengoku Basara (Specifically when it involves one Toshiro Hijikata)
Final Fantasy VII
Mother
Super Mario Brothers
Tales Of
Resident Evil
Yakuza/Like a Dragon (Not surprising, as both Like a Dragon and Gintama are set in and around Kabukicho)
Monster Hunter
Live Action Film & Television
Tumblr media
Abarenbo Shogun (SHOGUN KA YO!!!!!)
NHK Taiga Drama (The Shinsengumi drama in particular is a primary influence for Gintama)
Game of Death
Star Wars
Kinpachi-sensei (The series that the Ginpachi-sensei segments are based off of)
Doctor Who
I hope this helps if and when you decide to watch through Gintama. I'll try to update this post as I remember more references or if anyone messages me with a reference that I missed. Because good lord are there a lot of references. Oh, also remember: if this is your first time watching Gintama, start on episode 3. The first two episodes are filler.

Distribution of the reward money following the Ikedaya incident, from the collection of the Japanese National Archives.
30 ryo, a sword, and a barrel of sake Commander - Isami Kondo
23 ryo Vice Commander - Hijikata Toshizo
20 ryo Kondo’s Squad, which performed the initial assault on the Ikedaya: Okita Soji, Nagakura Shinpachi, Todo Heisuke, Tani Mantaro, Asano Kaoru, Takeda Kanryusai, Okuzawa Eisuke, Ando Hayataro, and Nitta Kakuzaemon.
In the case of Okuzawa, Ando, and Nitta, the money was awarded posthumously to their families. Ando and Nitta were killed at the Ikedaya, and Okuzawa died of his injuries about a week later.
In addition to Kondo’s squad, which was the first to locate the Choshu ronin at the Ikedaya, two other squads were searching Kyoto for the meeting location: Hijikata’s and Inoue’s, each consisting of 11 people. They were eventually alerted to the fight at the Ikedaya and rushed to join it
I think it's most likely that Kondo sent Shuhei to alert the other squads. That would explain why Kondo reports he was with his squad, but Nagakura doesn't list him as part of the raid itself.
17 ryo Hijikata’s Squad - Harada Sanosuke, Saito Hajime, Shimada Kai, Shinohara Tainoshin, Kawashima Katsujin, Hayashi Shintaro, Kazurayama Takehachiro, Tani Sanjuro, Michina Chuji, and Aridoshi Kango.
Inoue Genzaburo, who led the third squad, was also awarded 17 ryo, while the rest of his squad were awarded 15 ryo each.
15 ryo Inoue Genzaburo’s Squad - Matsubara Chuji, Iki Hachiro, Nakamura Kingo, Ozeki Yashiro, Shukuin Ryozo, Sasaki Kuranosuke, Kawai Kisaburo, Sakai Hyogo, Kiuchi Mineta, Matsumoto Kijiro, Takeuchi Gentaro, and Kondo Shuhei (Tani Sentaro).
Individuals who were not out on patrol that night at all, such as Yamanami (Sannan) Keisuke and Yamazaki Susumu who stayed back at the Shinsengumi headquarters, did not receive any money.
As a random side note:
> Kawashima Katsuji was later kicked out of the Shinsengumi for cowardice. > Ozeki Yashiro was discharged due to illness - he died less than a year later, most likely of heart failure

        Synopsis
I, the protagonist, was just an ordinary high school girl, but suddenly I was reincarnated as a spider monster in a fantasy world. Not only that, but I awakened in a dungeon filled with vicious monsters. Armed with only my human knowledge and my overwhelming positivity, I'm forced to use spiderwebs and traps to defeat far stronger monsters just to stay alive... So begins the labyrinth survival story of a girl with incredible mental strength living as one of the lowest-ranked beasts!
  Characters and Cast
  Kumoko
VA: Aoi Yuki (Tsuyu Asui in My Hero Academia)
A high school girl of self-professed low standing who has reincarnated as a spider. In her former life, she lived as a shut-in and immersed herself in video games, but now she uses her remarkable mental strength to fight for survival. She uses battle tactics that make up for her low stats with her mastery of agility, spider thread, and poison fangs.
  Schlain Zagan Analeit (Shun)
VA: Shun Horie (Enta Jinnouchi in Sarazanmai)
The fourth prince of the Kingdom of Analeit. His name in his previous life was Yamada Shunsuke. He was a textbook example of the average high school student and retains that quality after reincarnating. However, he has a deep admiration for his older brother Julius, the hero, and spends every day working hard to catch up to him.
  Karnatia Seri Anabald (Katia)
VA: Nao Toyama (Yui Yuigahama in My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU)
The daughter of Duke Anabald. In her previous life, she was a boy named Ooshima Kanata, but she reincarnated as a beautiful girl. She’s a prodigy on a par with Shun, and has been his best friend since their former life. Her speech is normally elegant and refined, but when talking with others who have reincarnated, she talks like a boy.
  Feirune
VA: Eri Kitamura (Cana Alberona in Fairy Tail)
Shun’s pet Earth Wyrm. In her previous life, she was a girl named Shinohara Mirei, but she reincarnated as a monster instead of a human. As a monster, her stats grow at a very fast rate, and she has excellent situational judgment. She has a cheerful, open personality, but she was a bully in her former life, and this shows in her behavior.
  Filimøs Harrifenas
VA: Kaya Okuno (Kaya Kikuma in Wake Up, Girls!)
In her previous life, she was Okazaki Kanami, homeroom teacher to the kids who were reincarnated, and they affectionately called her “Oka-chan.” After reincarnating, she began attending school with Shun and the others as their classmate. Since she reincarnated as an elf, she looks younger than she actually is. She’s a caring teacher who continues to follow her students after their reincarnation, but she has many secrets.
  Suresia
VA: Yui Ogura (Kyoka in Princess Connect! Re:Dive)
The second princess of the Kingdom of Analeit. As Shun’s half-sister, born to a different mother not long after his birth, her talents rival his. Her obsession with her brother Shun is extreme enough to put others off, and she’s noticeably hostile toward all girls who get friendly with him.
  Hugo Baint Renxandt
VA: Kaito Ishikawa (Tobio Kageyama in Haikyu!!)
The crown prince of the Renxandt Empire. In his previous life, he was Natsume Kengo, and he was regarded as the leader of the class. His skills are the real deal, but his habit of exaggerating his own abilities detracts from the magnitude of his power. He’s as belligerent as he was in his former life, viewing Shun as his rival.
  Yurin Ullen
VA: Aimi Tanaka (Ryuzu Birma in Re:ZERO)
A Saint candidate in the Holy Kingdom of Alleius. Her name in her previous life was Hasebe Yuika. She’s very serious and well-mannered, but often loses sight of what’s going on around her. After reincarnating, she inherited the life of a girl who was abandoned by her parents and raised by the church, and she is now a fanatical believer in the Word of God religion, which follows the creed of “We improve our skills so that we may hear the voice of God.”
  Julius Zagan Analeit
VA: Junya Enoki (Takeru Takaishi in Digimon Adventure tri.)
The second prince of the Kingdom of Analeit. Julius is Shun’s older brother and the strongest hero among all humankind. Despite his mastery of both swordsmanship and magic and his achievements in combat, he remains virtuous and not at all proud. He is a true hero, devoting himself to fighting for world peace.
