[Pop-up ★] First place trophy that proved why Shinhwa are “legends” and “current”

Shinhwa once again proved their existence. Like how the phrase “longest running” shows they have never disbanded, Shinhwa are “legends” and are still “current”.

Shinhwa released their 13th full album “Unchanging - Touch” on the 2nd. Following which, they started performing title track “Touch” on music shows, starting with Mnet “Mcountdown” on the 12th, and in the live broadcast of SBS “Inkigayo” on the 15th, they laid their hands on the first place trophy.

On this day, the other nominees for first place alongside Shinhwa’s “Touch” included AOA’s “Excuse Me”, and Akdong Musician’s “Last Goodbye”. Akdong Musicians are strong in the digital charts, with their song topping charts immediately after release from the full support of music fans, while AOA are a group receiving love for their “cutie sexy” concept. Shinhwa fairly won the first place trophy amidst juniors who are forming their fandom or have fans with the strongest “firepower”.

This is Shinhwa’s 13th full album. Apart from the special albums they have released from time to time as a surprise present to the fans, the number of full albums alone released under the name ‘Shinhwa’ come up to 13. This is the reason why Shinhwa are known as ‘longest running idols’. It is not simply because they have been around for long, in that long period of time, Shinhwa has never changed members nor disbanded and have continuously released albums and performed as ‘Shinhwa’.

Recently, music fans are paying attention to the 1st generation idols who have promoted from the 1990s to the early 2000s and are reuniting. These groups gift the gift of emotions from that era to those who grew up listening to their songs, and are putting up songs and performances of a different charm from the 3rd and 4th generation idols to people from an era that doesn’t remember their songs.

However, Shinhwa is not a group where the words “reminisce” or “memories” are suitable. Apart from the break when the members went to fulfil their military services, they have actively been involved in group and solo promotions. This isn’t all. Their music characteristics are maintained through continuous music promotions but they also continuously make changes to their music style and performance. For “This Love”, the title track of their 11th album, they presented an unconventional yet refreshing performance by adding Korea’s first ever ‘voguing dance’ choreography into the song. In “Sniper”, the title track for their 12th album, they made a movie-like performance by giving each member roles like boss, sniper, commander etc. (”This Love” and “Sniper” gave Shinhwa 8 and 10 trophies respectively.) In their most recent promotions for “Touch”, they are the first to use the ‘future bass’ genre in Korea’s mainstream music industry. 

They have consistently been active in this field and are writing a new history for Korea’s idol groups but they have also shown their artistic sides, by composing songs and choreographing dances, although it is hidden by their idol group image and not well-known. And with music and choreography completed that way, they have received a first place trophy as a group in their 20th year. Although it is definitely not true that the value of their music and performance will drop if they don’t win a trophy, Shinhwa’s winning of the first place trophy is evidence that they are destroying all prejudices placed on idol groups. That is why they are examples to their juniors, and why so many idol groups pick Shinhwa as their role models. 

Shinhwa will start their Asia Tour from their 4 February Taiwan concert, and also hold their first domestic concert tour in 11 years. It is expected that Shinhwa will perform on music shows before they start their tour. Will Shinhwa be able to break the 10 music show wins record from “Sniper”?
