Plot

The film opens with the sight of a train passing, setting the stage for Young-bok's journey. Having left his mother and younger sister, Young-ok, in their hometown, he arrives in Seoul to work as a porter at Gyeongseong Station. Previously, Young-bok spent seven years as a son-in-law at Bong-seon's household, but he relocated to the city after Bong-seon was taken by Ju Myeong-gu. In his new role, he encounters Young-hee, a gas station attendant who struggles to support her ailing father and younger sibling.

In the meantime, Young-ok, having lost her mother, travels to Gyeongseong in search of her brother. Unable to locate him, she secures a position as a waitress at a café. During her employment, she meets Gae-cheol, a wealthy associate of Ju Myeong-gu, who exploits her vulnerability, leading to a traumatic encounter. Concurrently, Young-hee, who has also lost her job, becomes ensnared in Gae-cheol's predatory circle.

After fleeing her home, Young-hee confides in Young-bok about the harrowing events. Upon learning the truth, Young-bok confronts Gae-cheol at his residence, where he reunites with Young-ok. "Crossroads of Youth" marked the inaugural production of Geumgang Cinema, a film production entity. Initially conceived as a sound film, the decision was made to transition to a silent format due to certain deficiencies identified in the original footage. Producer Park Chang-soo, who adopted the stage name Park Yeon for his role as Jang Gae-cheol, financed the project himself after experiencing setbacks in his acting career, including an unsuccessful audition for actor recruitment.

The filming took place across various locations in Gyeongseong. The narrative commences at Gyeongseong Station, where the character Yeongbok serves as a porter, while scenes featuring Yeonghee as a gas station employee were captured in the vicinity of Gyeongseong Station Square. Additionally, a pivotal fight sequence between the characters Banbu and Gookilgwan was filmed in one of Seoul's numerous restaurants.

Screening

"Crossroads of Youth" premiered at the Joseon Theatre on April 21, 1934. On September 26 of the same year, an incident occurred involving an actor from the film who was stabbed. Um Dong-ok (엄동옥; 嚴東鈺), a boxer and gangster known as Shinmajeok, confronted Lee Won-yong and Park Yeon after viewing the film. During this encounter, Um Dong-ok requested a drink, citing the movie's commercial success, and subsequently demanded payment for his suit. When Lee Won-yong refused to comply, Um Dong-ok attacked him with a dagger. The weapon penetrated Lee Won-yong's left abdomen, cutting through his suit jacket and pants, yet fortunately did not injure his flesh.

Excavation and Re-examination

Following the discovery of "Sweet Dream" in 1936, a private collector reached out to the Korean Film Archive, claiming possession of nine rolls of vintage film. The collector explained that his father had operated a cinema named Dansungsa until shortly after the Korean War began, and the films were preserved when the theater ceased operations during the conflict. Upon examination by the Korean Film Archive, it was confirmed that these rolls contained the original negative of "Crossroads of Youth," which premiered in 1934. Notably, the discovered material was a negative rather than a positive print, consisting of nitrate film, with eight rolls representing the main content and one roll dedicated to the ending credits. Regrettably, one of the eight main rolls exhibited a whitening effect, rendering it irreparable.

The discovery of this film marked it as the oldest surviving Korean cinematic work, leading to occasional screenings organized by local authorities and film archives. Given its silent film status, many of these screenings featured a narrator to provide context and commentary. In 2007, the Korean Film Archive was approached by another private collector who provided nine nitrate negative rolls from the 1930s. Among these, one roll included the film's concluding titles, while another was too deteriorated to undergo restoration. The collector's father had retained these films from his time managing Dansungsa until the onset of the Korean War.

During the restoration efforts, the film research team initially identified the work as "Passion Flowing Through the Galaxy," directed by Ahn Jong-hwa. However, further investigation clarified that the film was indeed "Crossroads of Youth." This process underscores the challenges associated with preserving nitrate film, which is susceptible to oxidation and poses significant fire hazards, as evidenced by historical incidents even in well-organized archival environments like the United States. The fortunate survival of these films, despite their precarious conditions, is a remarkable achievement in film preservation.

In 1938, the Chosun Ilbo Film Festival recognized "Crossroads of Youth" as the sixth best entry in its list of the "Top 10 Silent Films."

The setting of this Demon Slayer AU is in Joseon Dynasty, Korean dynastic kingdom that lasted for over five centuries. It was the last dynastic kingdom of Korea. Founded by Yi Seong-gye in July 1392, and replaced by the Korean Empire in October 1897. So in this AU, it is around mid 1400s of Joseon Dynasty (15th Century). And yes, ALL characters’ name will be in Korean. Because of its society and diffrences from original, there are couple of characters gender-bent and some Headcanons involved. And maybe few OCs.

In 2037, South Korea is now divided into General Earth, a heavily polluted place where crimes are rampant, and Smart Earth, a clean and peaceful city free from crimes. Kim Joon-hyuk (Kim Kang-woo) is a crime detective who tries to get into Smart Earth to investigate a case of twin brothers who went missing in 2017. Kim Min-kyu (Yoo Seung-ho) lives an isolated life due to a severe allergy to other people. He develops extreme rashes that rapidly spread throughout his body once he makes any form of skin contact. Jo Ji-ah (Chae Soo-bin) is a woman who is trying to make it in life by creating her own businesses. However, after an encounter with Min-kyu, she ends up pretending to be a robot in place of the supposed Aji 3 robot. The Aji 3 robot was developed by Ji-ah's ex-boyfriend, professor Hong Baek-kyun (Um Ki-joon) and his team. The robot was meant to be tested by genius Min-kyu, however an accident caused the robot's battery to malfunction. As Baek-kyun modeled the robot after Ji-ah, the team ends up recruiting her to take the place of Aji 3.

15. Because This Is My First Life

Plot:

In the present day, Ji Eun-Tak is a high school student. She still sees ghosts and hears their whisper of “Dokkaebi’s bride.” She now lives with her aunt’s family, but she is mistreated by them. On her birthday, Ji Eun-Tak sits by the sea with a lighted birthday cake. At that time, Kim Shin suddenly appears in front of her. Kim Shin does not know why, but he can hear her voice and appears in front of her against his will. Coincidentally, Kim Shin lives with the Grim Reaper at the same house.

-       One of must watch k-drama, this will make you cry at the same time have a romantic feeling and excitement.

-       In terms of visuality, I’ve ranked Goblin second because it was really good. In terms of computer graphic effects, even the camera position and lightnings to evoke emotions to the audience were great.

Trivia:

One of the most remarkable scenes to me even to the audience in the Korean drama Goblin is the sword that was stubbed into Kim Shin(Gong Yoo)’s chest, but did you know how that it was made? According to what I have searched online, “the show’s crew said in Saturday’s episode.

To create the illusion of being impaled, Gong was required to wear a suit, crafted by the art team and pasted with pieces of the sword. Computer graphic effects were added later to shroud the sword in green smoke.” – Rumy Doo , https://www.thejakartapost.com

Plot:

Sometime during August, 1598, newly appointed governor Dam Ryung (Lee Min-Ho) stays for a night at an inn run by Mr. Yang (Sung Dong-Il). During that evening, Mr. Yang shows Dam Ryung a captured mermaid named Sim Chung (Gianna Jun). Later that night, Dam Ryung releases her into the ocean and, before she swims away, Sim Chung reaches out her hand to Dam Ryung which he briefly holds.

In the present day, Joon-Jae (Lee Min-Ho) is a smooth talking conman with magician like abilities. He works with Nam-Doo (Lee Hee-Joon) and Tae-O (Shin Won-Ho). -       If you love mermaids like me then this drama will be the best to watch.

-        I admire Jun Ji Hyun when she acted as Se Hwa and her eyes were full of emotions and when it came to Sim Chung I liked it to because she made me laugh when she had no clue about the outside world since she was a mermaid.

-       It was true that this drama has a top-caliber production elements, because when you watch some of the behind the scenes of legend of the blue sea in YouTube you can see there that it’s not easy for the whole team in order to produce this Korean drama.

Plot:

When the narcissistic Water God Ha Baek (Nam Joo Hyuk) visits earth in order to find a magical stone powerful enough to help him claim his throne, he seeks out the help of his servant and destined bride, psychiatrist So Ah (Shin Se Kyung), whose family is fated to serve the water god for generations. The problem is that she has no belief in the gods and initially mistakes him for a total lunatic suffering from delusions. -       If you are a fan of Nam Joo Hyuk then you should watch this.

-       In terms of visuality I really like the CGI effects in this drama the fact on how they make effects on the water thing it was so awesome and it seems realistic for me, I love it.

-       If you watch this k-drama there are so many stunning visual scenery one of them is the Realm of the Gods in water country…. This scene was so remarkable and so lovely.

# 5 Mama Fairy and Woodcutter

 Plot:

In the Goryeo period, Sun Ok-Nam was a fairy. She came down to this world and took a bath at a waterfall on Gyeryong Mountain. While she took the bath, a woodcutter took her fairy clothes and hid them. Because of this, Sun Ok-Nam could not go back to Heaven. She then married the woodcutter and they had two children together, but her husband died from falling off of a cliff. Sun Ok-Nam tried to find her fairy clothes, but she still could not locate it. Needing her fairy clothes, she decides to wait for husband to be reincarnated. Now in the present day, she makes coffee at a cafe on Gyeryong Mountain and waits for her reincarnated husband. Finally, after 699 years, she gets a feeling that one of the two men visiting her cafe from Seoul is her reincarnated husband. Sun Ok-Nam is not sure which one of the two men is her husband. She decides to follow them to Seoul to find out.

-  This story is really nice to watch because it is full of mystery and plot twist about the fairy and his reincarnated husband. But she is not sure which one of the two men is her husband. So she decided to follow them to Seoul to find out.

-  It was also fun to watch because there were a lot of CGI effects used in this drama, and I think it was nice in some part but there are some parts also of the drama that are not really good for me, but all in all I like how the drama was created.

    “Bulsinji-ok” (불신지옥), ou “Living Death” pour la distribution internationale, mais que l’on trouve également sous le titre de “Possessed”, est un film d’horreur sud-coréen datant de 2009, écrit et réalisé par Lee Yong-ju, à qui l’on doit également “Architecture 101” (2012). Les acteurs principaux sont Nam Sang-mi, qu’on a pu voir dans “Dead Friend” (2004), Shim Eun-kyung, qu’on a pu voir dans “Psychokinesis” (2018), Ryu Seung-ryong, qu’on a pu voir dans “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” (2014), Kim Bo-yeon, qu’on a pu voir dans “Moby Dick” (2011), Jang Young-nam, qu’on a pu voir dans “The Negotiation” (2018), Moon Hee-kyung, qu’on a pu voir dans “The Treacherous” (2015), et Shin Eun-jung, qu’on a pu voir dans “Canola” (2016). Ce film est paru le 12 août 2009 en Corée et a été récompensé du prix du Meilleur Scénario aux 30e Blue Dragon Film Awards.

L’histoire proposée par “Living Death” nous invite à suivre Hee-jin (Nam Sang-mi), une étudiante qui doit subitement rentrer chez elle après un appel téléphonique de sa mère lui annonçant la disparition de sa sœur de 14 ans, So-jin (Shim Eun-kyung). Lorsqu’elle arrive dans l’appartement familial, sa mère (Kim Bo-yeon), fervente catholique refuse de faire appel à la police, préférant se réfugier dans la prière. Hee-jin passe outre ses recommandations et l’inspecteur Tae-hwan (Ryu Seung-ryong) s’occupe de l’affaire. Pour lui, il n’y a pas lieu de s’inquiéter outre mesure, s’agissant probablement d’une fugue. Toutefois, l’affaire prend une tournure toute différente, lorsqu’une voisine se suicide en laissant une lettre d’excuses adressée à So-jin. Les investigations laissent entrevoir que cette dernière était possédée. Des événements de plus en plus étranges commencent à se développer et des morts suspectes ont lieu dans l’environnement direct de So-jin laissant Hee-jin dans le désarroi et l’inspecteur Tae-hwan dans l’expectative…

“Living Death” est à la fois un thriller et un film d’horreur. Durant la quasi-totalité du film, Hae-jin et l’inspecteur Tae-hwan recherchent la jeune So-jin disparue. Ensemble, ou chacun de son côté. L’inspecteur est atterré par les témoignages qui laissent une grande place au surnaturel. Bien que profondément incrédule, aussi bien par l’approche religieuse de la mère de So-jin que par l’aspect mystique et chamanique de l’affaire. L’ensemble l’ébranle, étant lui-même face à une situation personnelle compliquée par rapport à la maladie de son enfant et la détresse de sa femme. Les éléments horrifiques sont plutôt classiques avec des silhouettes qui traversent l’écran en contre-champ, des ombres, des portes qui s’ouvrent toutes seules, des yeux révulsés, des visages blafards, des corps meurtris. Rien de révolutionnaire, rien d’original, des choses familières, mais c’est correctement utilisé.

Le scénario concocté par Lee Yong-ju, qui endosse ici la double casquette de scénariste et de réalisateur, bien que primé, comporte certains trous. Bien qu’il ne faille pas systématiquement chercher à tout comprendre dans un film d’horreur s’articulant sur le mystique et/ou le paranormal, on s’emploie toujours à être cartésien face à ce que l’on nous propose. Certains aspects ne sont pas clairement expliqués et sont finalement masqués par un épilogue simple et des révélations qui lèvent le voile sur une bonne grosse partie du mystère. De l’ensemble des personnages, on retiendra essentiellement celui de la sœur aînée de la disparue, Hee-jin incarnée avec réalisme par Nam Sang-mi dans la bonne majorité du récit. Personnellement, j’ai commencé à ne plus adhérer au personnage dès lors que celui-ci se retrouve également sous l’emprise de ce qui s’apparente à une forme de possession par intermittence. Soit tu es possédée, soit tu ne l’es pas. Cela manque de simplicité. Je lui ai donc préféré le personnage de l’inspecteur Tae-hwan, interprété par l’excellent Ryu Seung-ryong. L’acteur offre une excellente performance, qui a elle seule mérite qu’on regarde ce film. Le pauvre tombe des nues. Il est tantôt ahuri, tantôt consterné face aux éléments de ses investigations.

Les valeurs de production de “Living Death” sont correctes. La photographie délivrée par Jo Sang-yoon est simple tout en s’attachant à préciser le niveau de vie modeste des principaux protagonistes de l’histoire, centré pour l’essentiel dans un immeuble de banlieue. La bande musicale et sonore orchestrée par Kim Hong-jib est excellente et participe grandement aux effets de frayeur et de tension proposés par le développement de l’intrigue. L’édition signée par Kim Jae-bum et Kim Sang-bum débouche sur un métrage de 106 minutes bien équilibré qui s’avère prenant dans sa majorité. À noter que Kim Sang-bum est loin d’être un inconnu œuvrant comme monteur depuis la fin des années 1990 et ayant travaillé sur des dizaines et des dizaines de films. Il a été primé à plusieurs reprises pour son travail dont notamment pour “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” (2002), “Oldboy” (2003), “Blood Rain” (2005) ou encore “The Man from Nowhere” (2010).

En conclusion, “Living Death” est un film d’horreur classique dans la moyenne, sans être vraiment bon et sans être fondamentalement mauvais. L’histoire est conventionnelle, l’intrigue est simple et le développement manque parfois de fluidité. Le rythme est cohérent, le récit est parfois embrouillé et la narration fait appel a de multiples flashbacks. La photographie est basique, la bande originale est excellente et l’édition permet de garder le spectateur captivé. La distribution offre de bonnes prestations cependant dominée par la performance de Ryu Seung-ryong. L’ensemble se laisse regarder sans être fondamentalement marquant.

SEOUL, April 1 (Yonhap) — A South Korean art troupe and a taekwondo demonstration team held historic performances in Pyongyang on Sunday, with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and his wife in attendance.

A 160-member art troupe, including celebrated K-pop musicians such as Cho Yong-pil, Red Velvet and Seohyun, performed for about two hours before a North Korean audience in the fully packed, 1,500-seat East Pyongyang Grand Theatre.

It marks the first performance by South Korean artists in the North Korean capital since 2005, when Cho, a contemporary K-pop legend, held a solo concert there.

Kim’s sister Kim Yo-jung and Kim Yong-nam, the North’s ceremonial head of state, were also present at Sunday’s concert together with Kim and his wife Ri Sol-ju, amid a thawing of inter-Korean ties driven by North Korea’s participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in February.

Including the art troupe, a 186-strong South Korean artistic delegation led by Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Do Jong-whan arrived in Pyongyang on Saturday for a four-day visit. The delegation also includes a 20-member team of taekwondo performers and 10 staff members, reporters and government officials, and they traveled aboard two chartered flights via a direct air route from Seoul.

In celebration of the Winter Games in the South, North Korea sent not only athletes and cheerleaders but also an art troupe and a taekwondo demonstration team. The art troupe called the Samjiyon Orchestra staged a concert in Gangneung on South Korea’s east coast and another in Seoul.

On Friday, the two Koreas agreed to hold what will be the third inter-Korean summit following meetings in 2000 and 2007 at the border village of Panmunjom on April 27.

Under the title “Spring Comes,” the concert showcased 11 famous South Korean pop singers representing all generations — Cho Yong-pil, Lee Sun-hee, Choi Jin-hee, Yoon Do-hyun, Baek Ji-young, Red Velvet, Jungin, Seohyun, Ali, Kang San-eh — and jazz pianist Kim Kwang-min.

Cho Yong-pil, who previously performed in the North in front of a crowd of 7,000, returned to a Pyongyang stage with The Great Birth, the band that he has been with for about 40 years.

He performed “Cafe of the Winter,” which was known to be one of late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s favorite songs, and a medley of three of his hit songs — “Dream,” “Short Hair” and “Let’s Go Travel.”

   Choi Jin-hee sang “Love Maze,” her 1984 megahit, which was also reported to be Kim Jong-il’s favorite, while Red Velvet introduced globally hot K-pop music through its latest hits “Red Flavor” and “Bad Boy.”

Seohyun, a 26-year-old star from the popular idol group Girls’ Generation, hosted the show and sang “Greenish Willow Tree,” a very popular North Korean song by late singer Kim Kwang-sook. The title both symbolizes spring and the North’s capital, also known as “Ryugyong,” a Korean word meaning “the capital of willow trees.”

   Seohyun made a surprise collaboration with North Korean singers during the Samjiyon Orchestra’s performance in Seoul.

Sunday’s show began at 6:30 p.m., one hour later than originally scheduled, upon a request from the North. North Korea asked for a change in the performance schedule so more people could come to watch, a request which the South accepted, according to South Korean officials.

Ahead of the concert, the taekwondo demonstration team had an individual performance for about an hour before 2,300 North Koreans who packed the Pyongyang Taekwondo Hall. It marked the first taekwondo performance by a South Korean team since 2002.

“You honestly prepared (the performance),” Choe Hwi, chairman of the North’s National Sports Guidance Committee, said after watching the show. “I think it would be good if we (two Koreas) could learn from each other for further development of taekwondo.”

   The taekwondo team is scheduled to stage a joint performance with North Korean performers on Monday at Pyongyang Grand Theatre, while the art troupe will perform with North Korean artists at Ryugyong Jong Ju Yong Gymnasium on Tuesday afternoon.

The South Korean delegation will return home later that night, wrapping up its four-day trip to Pyongyang.
