Description
This episode of the archangel Michael, a figure referred to in the Book of Daniel, is to be found in the Revelation of Saint John. This text narrates the battle in the sky between Saint Michael and his angels and the Devil with his legions of rebel angels. In the end “that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan” was cast out of Heaven onto the earth, as were his rebel angels.

Mars Being Disarmed by Venus

Description
Mars Being Disarmed by Venus is the last painting produced by the French artist Jacques-Louis David. He began it in 1822 (aged 73) during his exile in Brussels and completed it three years later, before dying in an accident in 1825. The work combines idealization with elements of realism. Specifically, David integrated the idealized forms of mythological painting with a realist attention to detail. This combination of two seemingly incompatible principles also plays an important role in the themes of the painting, most notably in its treatment of masculinity and femininity.
David sent the painting from Brussels for exhibition in Paris, where Romanticism was ascendant in the Salon of 1824. The painting initially received a muted response from critics, but over time its reputation has grown. It is now displayed in the Oldmasters Museum (part of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium) in Brussels.

Description
Pompeo Batoni’s grand portraits and numerous religious and historical commissions established him as the leading Roman painter of his day. He painted Peace and War on his own initiative, without a commission, attracting critical praise for the work’s graceful invention. It combines elements of Rococo softness and eroticism with the newly fashionable Neoclassical style. War, represented by the god Mars, is restrained by a personification of peace, who bears an olive branch.

Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland (ca. 1641-1709)

Description
This picture forms one of the ‘Windsor Beauties’ series, a set of eleven portraits of celebrated women at the Restoration court painted by Sir Peter Lely. The series was commissioned by Anne Hyde, Duchess of York, probably around 1662-5.
Pepys recorded on 21 August 1668 that he ‘did first see the Duke of York’s room of pictures of some Maids of Honour, done by Lilly: Good, but not like.’ By describing the pictures as ‘not like’ Pepys is alluding to the often noted opinion that Lely flattered his subjects, and gave each portrait a similar languorous and ‘sleepy eyed’ air, said to have been influenced by the features of the noted court beauty Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland. Contrary to Pepys’s assertion, only one of the sitters, Frances Teresa Stuart, actually held the position of Maid of Honour in the Royal Household. Some of the others were noted courtesans, while others were respected members of the nobility.
Barbara Villiers was Charles II’s principal mistress between 1660 and 1670 and the most powerful woman at court until she was supplanted by Louise de Kéroualle.

Description
This elegant classical scene is a celebration of manly virtue in a domestic setting. When the paint was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1771, the source of its subject matter was identified as Plutarch's Life of Lycurgus (75 AD), in which a Spartan matron sends her son off to war with the gift of a shield. She is seen here commanding him either to return the shield to her in victory, or with his corpse laid across it.

#i need to fix my heat shield but my cars ground clearance is so low 😭#i can still probably maybe do it but. itll require me laying down in a parking spot on the side of a busy street#which I'm not above doing but#itd also be nice to have the space to do my own oil changes
