So my SWRPG group is midway through our second campaign (working title Rebel Scum just took so we kept it the tags gonna be swoopposting tho cuz its in the same swrpg setting as our first game, swoop gang which is also still ongoing) and my character Vikho Ried just hit 29 morality last session and its all ive been thinking about for the last four days. Looking back so far shes had two distinct stages and were on the brink of her third. (with stage four either being jedi knight or dead)

the original vikho concept was to hop in with a suave shitty smuggler from a backwater planet whos force sensitivity went unnoticed because she was so far out of the way of everything. Dolly Parton x Han Solo with enough Revolver Ocelot and Eva Metalgear mixed in to make a green skull cloud bubble out of the cauldron

she quickly turned into one of the party’s icons because shes a dramatic bitch who loves doing stupid flashy shit mid fight, and leverages her genuine dumb curiosity with seductive and a conniving edge to act as the party’s charm/deception face. She got a boyfriend, who then turned out to be a spy and thus was executed by the party while she wasnt looking. She never really got over that. BUT!!! around the same time she also fell in love with another party member, Noelle, played by @butch-paladin​, who also drew her a bunch early on like this one that genuinely had more impact on how i visualized early game vikho more than my own drawings.

this was like peak vikho, every time she got her hands on a new thing i would draw it, theres easily a dozen of these little skitcherins around but theres no way in hell im sorting thru my unsorted pile of sketches (i started this stack sophmore year of highschool)

noelle and vikho where such a charming duo and stayed together for most of the campaign up until last session when her slowly declining morality finally hit the breaking point and the dark side corruption finally GOT her ass. Noelle ran away in a panic because holy shit Vikho just let an imperial POW go so she could shoot him in the back

Now that Noelles gone its set in to Vikki just how deep the rot goes and shes having a total breakdown because in her detatched and simplified understanding of the force yellow eyes = inquisitor = evil = marked for death. so shes abandoning the party, including Noelle, to go find a corner of the galaxy to curl up and die in because she is CONVINCED she cannot be redeemed now.

such a fundamental change in her character arc spurred me to do a character redesign since shes throwing out her old wardrobe and i nailed it on my first try

I don’t typically like when star trek characters reference legacy characters just to talk about how great and perfect they are but I do like this route where even though Tuvok calls him a great visionary in the end he brings Spock up to say he argued with him. I think this is the way of the future. Lean in. Star Trek characters should say things like ‘An old man cut me off in space traffic the other day. I think it was McCoy?’ and another should nod and shake their head like he’s always doing that shit

momoka kawaragi & let down

the first portion of the song, to me, is essentially meant to represent the routine of life we are meant to follow. the end and the beginning are what encompass our day to day. we move through the motions every single day, following the same pattern as the last and the next. it is exhausting, and it is such a chore. it is disappointing. the only thing these people with nothing else have is drinking, an activity so heavily reliant on inertia and forgetting all your problems; an activity so reminiscient of momoka. when we first meet her, she looks like the very image of a struggling artist. performing on the street with CDs ready to sell and practically no money coming in outside of a part-time job; she looks--feels exhausted. she was crushed and subsequently struggled to get up, losing hope to the point of almost throwing away her passions--giving away her guitar.

wings twitch: when the wings are twitching it means they're too strained for use, but it's as if the bug cannot help itself from trying to fly. it is instinctual. even though they physically cannot fly they continue to try, to twitch on the floor. it's reminiscent of momoka in multiple ways to me. the only difference between these lyrics and momoka herself is that though her wings are twitching its not because they are completely unable to move, for momoka, she's the one who stops herself short.

don't get sentimental / it always ends up drivel: wings are an innate symbolism for 'freedom', the ability to do what you want. sentimentality ends up 'drivel' (pointless, useless). it is merely you twitching your wings and trying to fly by being sentimental; but in the end it's meaningless since you still cannot fly. momoka is so resistant to any mere reminder of diadust, so much so that any time nina brought it up for a large portion of the show she would get angry and lash out at her persistent demeanor. thinking about the past is useless when it cannot be changed. something integral to momoka is her overwhelming feeling of thinking everything that togetoge does is pointless because it doesn't fit within the confines of what she thinks is realistically plausible, a set of criteria built on her previous loss; this too is her 'sentimentality'. why continue with something you think will drive into the ground? because you don't want it to.

let down and hanging around: is also super vindicitive of momoka's mental state to me. when we first see her, that's literally what she is. she is just existing, trying to survive, completely crushed under the foot of reality and regretful of her naivety. it is tragic, because that naivety that momoka so constantly downgrades, is merely hope. it is having a dream, and wanting to fulfill it your way. that was her 'naivety', her 'stupidity' and now she is left to mourn its place in this world.

one day i am gonna grow wings: something highly worth noting that before this climax of the song, there was no mention of growing wings at all. it is as if the singer has changed within this short span of time, or they have decided to stop lying to themselves. they want to be free, to do what they want without worry, to fly. they've been crushed by reality, dreams and desires made inconsequential. to wish for wings is sentimental and pointless, but the emotions of humans will never make sense. in the end, it is our hope, our wants, that win out.

momoka's tough, uncaring attitude is so recklessly hammered against throughout the first half of the show. her actions truly do not make sense. she tries to leave her house and guitar, her passions behind, only to make a band with nina from the mere fact that she loved nina's singing and felt connected to it; and then, when everyone became serious about going pro, she announced that she was going to leave. you could say that reality hit her, that she got terrified about the idea of leading another band with determined people to its ruin. to keep going in this band before was merely her living in a dream, swept away by the ecstasy of playing with a new group of people, being in a new environment. it was her hope taking the wheel in her mind; a feeling that to momoka, only ends up drivel.

only through nina's relentless pushing, can momoka begin to cherish that hope. when something only brings you pain, how can you not want to get rid of it, how can you not treat it badly? how can you not discard it? when having hope, when being sentimental only gives momoka pain and reminds her of a past that cannot be changed, why would she want it? why would she not run away from the mere idea like a coward, terrified?

the only difference between these lyrics and momoka to me are that: in the end, despite the fact that momoka herself feels like her wings are beyond use, despite the fact that she feels pain straining sore limbs, her wish to repair them is nonetheless still there. forcing herself to grow a new, morphed pair isn't what she truly wishes for but rather what she thinks she does. all momoka wants, at her core, is to cultivate her passion; but the world is not so kind, and she had given up. rather than continue to dream, she acted, beginning to cradle and bandage her injured wings in order to properly grow them again.
