It’s pretty well known that Maria is a manifestation from Silent Hill and obviously James’s psyche, but I don’t know I also like to think she’s also partially a manifestation from Mary herself.

Mary probably sensed that James was angry and frustrated. She was angry and frustrated. Maybe Maria represents the person she wanted, but couldn’t be. Carefree, sultry, teasing. Her continuous ‘deaths’ at the hand of Pyramid Head not only tortures James but serves as cruel reminders for her—that she can’t escape her death, that it was inevitable.

The dead wife trope is pretty tired—husband always holds the wife up to a pedestal and she always accepts her death with grace and dignity, telling husband he has to move on and life—but I appreciate SH2 for acknowledging the anger and pain of the wife with the hallway conversation. Maria is that anger and the desire that things could have been different personified—for both James and Mary.

davidtommy deserved more but there’s something fitting about their one panel cameos. about their appearances throughout the universe.

technically, it's a good culmination of their arcs begun roughly in young avengers. they met in that depressing office and then they were galavanting - making each other happy. david needed a bright spot, needed to get out of his rut, needed a lift toward something brighter. he needed a little fun, a little adventure. tommy needed an anchor, someone who'd just be there without expecting him to change in a specific way. someone who understands him, to be at his side.

and that's really what they got.

it's so ironic, bc it's way too little and underserves them. and yet.
