Guys I need to SCREAM!!!! So I just finished Firefly which like I didn’t know was a big deal until I went on ao3 expecting like 20 fics only for there to be over 7k and then learned it was canceled, and now that I’ve finished the only season ever made my jaw is on the FLOOR. BECAUSE WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCKKKKK ITS LITERALLY A MASTERPIECE OF TELEVISION ITS WITTY AND ROMANTIC AND GRITTY AND BASICALLY A LIVE ACTION COWBOY BEBOP IF YOU THINK ABT IT AND THEY KILLED IT!!!!!!!!!! i have More Still to say about the book and simon scene, though, because it totally switches gears for a moment. (did the writers want me to care about this scene this much?? probably not.)

i have rewatched this scene Many Times (like a very normal person.) and couldn't make sense of this exchange for a while, because i didn't quite get where the disconnect was coming from for simon - this is the First Time he fully looks at book in this scene, and it's because he's... confused or caught-off guard or even offended by what book has said and i couldn't figure out why, but it clicked for me a while ago. simon sees the whole volcano analogy as pointlessly sadistic, and while he knows what they did to river was sadistic, he thinks they had a Purpose. and also doesn't seem to think they even Would engage in the whole volcano-analogy mindset book is talking about.

he is thinking about the alliance government as a whole and a conglomeration; book is pointing out that that conglomeration is made up of individuals, with their own ends and purposes - and that they don't have as much supervision on themselves as they enforce on everyone else.

and i lol so hard at simon rolling his eyes while slightly smiling and going "now you're quoting the captain." but i think it speaks to a larger political difference between him and mal (and possibly book, but i think book is less "government is bad" and more "government is people and therefore is susceptible to flaw as anyone.) mal hates the alliance specifically because that is the government he fought against and that he sees affecting the outer planets so badly, but he even more broadly just does not like the concept of government at all. he sees it as worst, actively malicious, at medium a a constrictive nuisance that gets in the way, and at worse incompetent/useless.

simon, by contrast, feels more complicated. and it's one of the few things he does actually see as less black and white and is more conflicted about. he's become very disillusioned by the alliance as it exists now because of their practices (torturing river of course being the catalyst for that, but i think he has seen and would have continued to see other ways that it was Harming the Verse), and doesn't trust anyone from it because he Can't. but hehasn't written off the concept of government in its entirety, either.

Warm light spilled out of the galley, the various conversations of Serenity's crew filling the air.

"Ok, but no," Wash said, scraping rice onto his plate before blindly passing the dish to his wife. "How, in the ever loving hell, did your nephew manage to block the fuel back-up line? It's supposed to be impossible in the Wrix engines!"

"I'm telling ya! My uncle took the whole thing apart and he still ain't sure. The line managed to tie itself in knots - "

"Please tell me you have pictures, I need to see this - "

"This is one hell of a feast, Shepherd. Thank you," Zoë said and Book smiled, inclining his head.

"I should be thanking you for getting me the produce."

"Gave me an excuse to get off the ship," Jayne interrupted, spearing a baby potato with his knife. At the other end of the table, Simon made a face and River laughed, stealing a piece of meat off her brother's plate when he wasn't looking.

Smiling slightly, Mal caught Inara's eye and for a second, it felt as if time had stopped, neither of them willing to look away first.

A loud burst of laughter made them start. Inara's eyes dropped down to her plate while the captain turned to look at the rest of his crew.

All of them were laughing and talking, their faces bright, the clinking of cutlery mixing perfectly with the soft rumbling of the ship's engine.

Clearing his throat, Mal lifted his cup, his eyes soft.

"To Serenity," he said.

The table quietened as they all scrambled to lift their own.

"To a new year," Book added.

"To family," River whispered.

"To family," everyone echoed and took a sip.

Conversation slowly trickled back in and Mal leaned back in his chair, contentment burning bright in his chest.

Sure, the Alliance were still on their tail and money was tight while jobs were scarce but at least they were still flying. It wasn't much but it was enough.

Yea definitely! Are you also into it?

I know some stuff has been revealed to be not great about Whedon and some stuff doesn’t age well, but honestly I really love some of his characterizations, especially Inara, Kaylee, and Book. A lot of the writing is beautiful too.
